MEGAN THOMAS HEAD

PHOTO BY DIMITRI WILLIAMS PHOTOGRAPHY DIMITRIPHOTOS.COM MEGAN THOMAS HEAD @MEGANTIFFANI

Originally from Atlanta, Megan Head and her husband currently call the Triangle home, but as he serves in the United States military and she works as a television personality and lifestyle expert, there’s a good chance they may move again. That is why Megan wastes no time getting involved locally when her family moves someplace new! As a former NFL cheerleader for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Megan currently indulges her passion for singing and dancing through music ministry, being part of the worship team at Cross Assembly in Raleigh. Read on to find out more about her favorite Triangle finds and her must-have products for wherever she and her family go.

Your day usually begins with… A cup of coffee and a devotional. Your favorite Triangle discovery? I’m a huge believer in whole body health. I started going to Living Well Balanced about a year ago, and Dr. Prakash and his team have completely transformed how my body feels. I’m a walking testimony of what he and his team can do! I have also found THE BEST barbecue in the area. Prime Barbecue in Knightdale is hands down the best I’ve ever had! I’m a major carnivore and classify myself as a BBQ connoisseur. Trust me on this. Your three favorite Triangle things to do? I love date nights at Second Empire or Crawford and Son with my hubs. Taking walks through all the beautiful Raleigh neighborhoods is so relaxing. I also love touring new construction residential projects throughout Raleigh. The city is growing so fast, and the beautiful new homes being built make me feel inspired. Current items on your nightstand? A book, a sudoku puzzle, and a deck of cards. I usually end the day either reading, playing a game of sudoku, or playing a game of solitaire. I try to not look at my phone once I get into bed. What is your favorite item in your wardrobe and why? This is a tough one because I have multiple favorites. One thing I never tire of is great denim. I’m defin tely a collector of denim: jeans, denim jackets, denim shirts. It’s the fabric that never goes out of style and can constantly be reinvented. I’m a major fan of a Canadian tuxedo. I’ve also said that one of my alter egos is a 70’s urban cowgirl.

A beauty product you have bought multiple times? It’s difficult to pick just one. I constantly restock Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel & Precleanse. Th y’re great for my sensitive skin. I also use SPF every day and the Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen goes on like a makeup primer. It’s fantastic! Oh, and Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Peel Pads. The e are just too many great options to choose from! Last show you binge watched? I’m currently bingeing Schitt’s Creek. It’s so stinking hilarious! The biggest decision you are currently wrestling with is… The best way to welcome my husband home from his deployment! He’s been gone a year and will be home this spring. I want him to have the best welcome home humanly possible! Do you collect anything? I do! I collect Christmas ornaments from places we travel. I have a special Christmas tree decked out in those ornaments. It’s called our “Where in The World” tree. Your most-used phone app? Other than Instagram, I am always on the Adobe Premiere Rush app. I do a lot of filmi g with my job, and this app makes it so easy to edit my videos right on my phone! Your current snack obsession? Goodie Girl Gluten Free Mint Cookies. Th y’re the gluten free version of thin mints, and they are super-duper delicious! I’m actually eating them right now as I answer this question!

HI ANNA,

MY TEENAGE DAUGHTER IS STARTING TO EXPERIENCE MORE AND

MORE ACNE.

I

REALIZE THIS IS TYPICAL OF HER AGE, BUT

I

KNOW SHE’S

FEELING ANXIOUS AND SELF CONSCIOUS ABOUT IT WHEN SHE DOES START SOCIALIZING AGAIN.

WHAT

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR TREATMENT?

PRODUCTS, LASER, OR A COMBINATION OF BOTH?

My heart goes out to your daughter, Samantha! Acne is no fun at any age, but especially not when you’re a teen. Luckily, there are a few things I can recommend to help. First things first, I’d start with a gentle skin routine twice a day. Four Super Easy Indoor Plants Indoor plants aren't just aesthetically pleasing--they can help purify the air and induce calm. But if you don't naturally have a green thumb, the idea of houseplants may create stress rather than reduce stress! Help yourself feel good and help your place look good with easyto-grow houseplants. Consider the spider plant for any light, the snake plant or cacti if you have a spot with lots of light, or lucky bamboo for any spot away from direct sunlight.

Spider Plant

The spider plant g ows well in a variety of lights and temperatures. Plus, it's not super picky about its water intake. A mature plant grows long leaves, making the spider plant an ideal option for a hanging basket or plant pedestal.

Snake Plant

The snake plant is another easy indoo plant option. Snake plants prefer plenty of light, but beyond that, their requirements are minimal. Avoid over watering and the snake plant will be a hearty plant for years. Some can grow several feet high, so if you prefer something smaller choose a dwarf option, such as the Whitney or Futura Superba.

Cacti

If you have a spot with bright light, consider a cactus. Cacti come in many interesting shapes and grow best when ignored. Just the tiniest amount of water every now and then will make your cactus happy.

Lucky Bamboo

Lucky for you, lucky bamboo can thrive even if you forget to water it. The mai requirement for lucky bamboo is to avoid too much direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. And as the name implies, even with neglectful care, many people believe the plant may bring you good luck. Try your luck with lucky bamboo, cacti, snake plant, or spider plant for the best chances of seeing some green.

BEST EG G SA L A D When I say “best,” I mean it. Made with Dijon mustard, lemon, capers, chives, and dill, this egg salad is fresher and more flavorful than any other version I’ve tried. If you don’t eat eggs, swap in crumbled tofu to make it vegan.

CHICKPE A SAL AD SANDWICH CAPRESE SANDWICH

EGG SAL AD

FOR THE CHICKPEA SALAD INGREDIENTS

¼ cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1 teaspoon capers 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 1 small garlic clove, minced ¼ teaspoon turmeric ¼ teaspoon sea salt Freshly ground black pepper 6 hard boiled eggs, diced Pinches of celery seed 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill 2 tablespoons chopped fresh chives INSTRUCTIONS

In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, olive oil, mustard, capers, lemon juice, garlic, turmeric, salt, and several grinds of black pepper. Mix in the eggs, then stir in the celery seed, dill, and chives. If desired, lightly mash the mixture if it's too chunky. Chill until ready to serve..

1½ cups cooked chickpeas, drained and rinsed 2 tablespoons tahini 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard ½ garlic clove 1 teaspoon capers 1 green onion, chopped 2 tablespoons chopped cilantro 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice sea salt and freshly ground black pepper FOR THE SANDWICHES

handful of thin green beans, trimmed 1 soft baguette, sliced in half 8 to 10 Kalamata olives, pitted and sliced in half thinly sliced red onion, rinsed and dried vegan mayo (or regular mayo), for spreading ¼ English cucumber, thinly sliced 1 radish, thinly sliced 6 to 8 fresh basil leaves sea salt and freshly ground black pepper INSTRUCTIONS

Make the chickpea salad: In a food processor, combine the chickpeas, tahini, Dijon mustard, garlic, capers, green onions, cilantro, lemon juice, and pinches of salt and pepper. Pulse until combined, but do not puree. Season to taste. Blanch the green beans. Bring a small pot of salted water to a boil and place a bowl of ice water nearby. Drop the green beans into the boiling water for 1½ minutes, then scoop into the ice water to stop the cooking process. Once cool, drain, pat dry, and chop into 1-inch pieces. Assemble the sandwiches: Spread the chickpea salad on one side of the baguette. Press the chopped green beans into the chickpea salad and top with the olives and red onion slices. Spread of layer of mayo on the other half of the baguette and top with the sliced cucumbers, radishes, and basil. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Press together, slice, and enjoy!

INGREDIENTS

4 (3.5-inch) Focaccia squares, sliced in half Handful of arugula 1 (8-ounce) fresh mozzarella ball, sliced 2 tomatoes, sliced 1/3 cup Roasted Cherry Tomatoes, optional Pickled Onions, optional Basil leaves Extra-virgin olive oil, for drizzling Flaky sea salt and freshly ground black pepper INSTRUCTIONS

Assemble the sandwiches on the focaccia with the arugula, mozzarella, and tomato slices. Add the roasted tomatoes and a few pickled onions, if desired. Top with basil leaves, a drizzle of olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Notes

For a vegan version, use sliced avocado and a slather of vegan pesto in place of the cheese.

Great Reads

Get Your Genre Reads On

If you’re a fantasy, mystery/thriller, romance, or science fiction reader, then this list of recommendations is for you! Too often we hear of literary fiction or non-fiction receiving all of the attention, but there is no shame in loving what’s known as a “genre” read – that is, a book written in one of the specific classifications for a type of story. For instance, in order to be a romance, the characters must end up in a happily ever after or happily for now situation. Here are some recommendations for recently published titles for the genre readers among us!. — BrocheAroe Fabian, owner, River Dog Book Co., riverdogbookco.com

FANTASY: LEGACY OF ASH

MYSTERY/THRILLER: WHEN NO ONE IS WATCHING

Legacy of Ash is a 700+ page fantasy epic that relies on impeccable world building, instead of savagery and sex, to keep the pages turning. Finally, a new series created with such intention and craftsmanship that it brings back that feeling of excitement fantasy readers first felt when discovering masters like J.R.R. Tolkien (Lord of the Rings) and C.S. Lewis (Chronicles of Narnia). Steampunk-esque magic and mythology-inspired gods create a unique world of intertwining storylines, thoughtful character development, and impressive world building. Books 1 and 2 are currently out, with book #3 not far behind! Perfect for adults and teens.

What makes this thriller so psychologically haunting is that it could easily be true. Cole has taken the gentrification of historically Black and other marginalized identity neighborhoods and plumbed that reality to its darkest depths for an eerily uncomfortable read due to its chilling familiarity. Told from alternating perspectives, the main characters’ suspicions converge in action-packed final chapters that don’t shy away from the depths of human greed and depravity nor the grim actions of exactly what it takes to rebel against it.

SCIENCE FICTION: HENCH

by Natalie Zina Walschots

ROMANCE: WRITTEN IN THE STARS

by Alexandria Bellefleur

What do a pragmatic, careerfocused, monochromatic-loving lesbian and a star-gazing, fortunetelling, color-obsessed bisexual have in common? A meddling brother and friend who believes in love at first sight whom they both hate to disappoint. Alexandria Bellefleur has crafted a perfect debut romance that pays homage to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Playful, charming, humorous, and hopeful, this #ownvoices queer romance offers a happily ever after look at two young women finding each other and their place in the world.

Turning the superhero genre on its head, Hench is an action-packed novel about an unlikely heroine who makes you think twice about the price of heroism. A nerdy data temp becomes a superhero’s sophisticated data science department head, using her analytical skillz to identify weaknesses and destroy superheroes in order to prove no one wins when the cost of collateral damage is measured in human lives. Witty and wry, the scenes flash by, evocative of comic books with tight prose and punchy dialogue, moving the plot toward the inevitable battle between good and evil. Only in Hench, which side to root for is decidedly complicated. Older teens will enjoy this as much as the adults.

7 Daily Self-Care Habits Staying fit and healthy physically and mentally starts with healthy habits and making your heath a priority, rather than putting it on the back burner. The good news is you don't have to devote hours each day, adopt an expensive diet, or even join a gym to improve your health and well-being. It starts with self-care and adopting habits that will make you feel your best. Let's look at some self-care habits, backed by science, that can help you boost your physical and mental health.

Open the Blinds as Soon as You Wake Up

Exposing your eyes to natural light early in the day helps set your internal biological clock and your circadian rhythms, those that regulate hormonal factors that affect appetite, stress, mood, body weight, and sleep habits. A study from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine found that people who exposed their eyes to natural light in the morning had lower body mass index than those who got light exposure later in the day. Based on this study, the earlier you open up the curtains or blinds in the morning, the better.

Take a Break from Electronics

Too many people's eyes are glued to their devices and have too few quality interactions with other people. Take a break from your devices for at least 30 minutes each day. Talk to someone in person or doing something else you enjoy, like a non-techy hobby. The reward will be real life benefits rather than virtual ones. The best time to take a break from tech is in the evening. Electronics emit blue light that can disrupt your internal biological clock and make it harder to sleep. Try shutting off the electronics at least an hour before bedtime and watch your sleep quality improve.

Dump the Junk

Junk food, ultra-processed foods and foods high in sugar, do nothing for your health and they're energy zappers. When you eat something overly processed, it causes a rapid rise in blood sugar followed by a precipitous blood glucose drop that causes you to feel tired and hungry. For some, this drop in sugar triggers anxiety. Replace the junk food with nutrient-dense whole foods high in fiber and you'll have more sustained energy level and fewer swings in blood sugar.

Breathe Deeply

Breathing too rapidly and shallowly causes changes to the blood pH that worsens stress and anxiety. Train yourself to breathe differently by placing one hand on your belly and the other on your chest. When you breathe in and out, the hand on your belly should move more than the one on your chest if you're breathing right. It takes practice to master healthy breathing. Find a comfortable place to lie down and practice for five minutes every day until it becomes second nature.

More Water and Less Coffee

Even mild dehydration can cause a depressed mood. Studies show that these symptoms can develop at a hydration level that isn't pronounced enough to cause you to feel thirsty. So, drink water throughout the day even if you aren't thirsty. Replace some caffeine you currently drink with ice cold water, but taper back on coffee gradually to avoid caffeine withdrawal. There's nothing more hydrating than water. If you don't enjoy plain water, add fresh herbs or fruit slices to your water.

Make a Date with Nature

A nature walk is the ultimate form of selfcare. With a nature walk, you get exercise, fresh air, and sunlight, along with a beautiful view of nature. Studies show walking in a green space, an outdoor area that's naturally green, is beneficial for mental and physical health. One study found that spending 20 minutes in a park, even without exercising, created a greater sense of well-being. Take a nature break and you'll return to your daily life re-energized and more positive.

Do Something Kind for Someone Who Doesn't Expect It

When you spread kindness to others, it also gives your own health and psyche a boost. According to Mayo Clinic, kindness boosts mood and improves self-esteem. It also has surprising physical benefits. An act of kindness helps lower the stress hormone cortisol and reduce

blood pressure. It also shifts the focus away from yourself on to others and helps you connect with the outside world. No need to do something major! Smile at someone, say thank you, or hold the door. Then watch the response you get.

The Bottom Line

Make sure you're practicing self-care by engaging in one or more of those self-care habits. Self-care is not selfish - it's healthy! references: News.Northwestern.edu. SPRING ROAD TRIP TO WILMINGTON AND ITS ISLAND BEACHES: 10 THINGS TO SEE & DO

BE DAZZLED BY SPRING BLOOMS FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA There’s nothing quite like springtime on the North Carolina coast when spring blooms bedazzle landscapes with azaleas, tulips and other perennials. With 67 acres of formal coastal gardens, Airlie Gardens is a veritable showcase of botanical color. Other stunning gardens with spring blooms include: Greenfield Lake Park which is surrounded by azaleas and ancient cypress trees. The Arboretum of New Hanover County features seven acres of theme gardens. A horse-drawn carriage ride through Wilmington’s historic district affords a peek into manicured gardens of private residences. Oakdale Cemetery beckons with its landscaped gardens and funerary art. Carolina Beach State Park and Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden feature carnivorous plants, including the rare Venus flytrap which only grows natively within a 75-mile radius. In Wrightsville Beach, Harbor Way Gardens is a quiet oasis of native plants and flowers. BE “OTTERLY” CAPTIVATED AT THE N.C. AQUARIUM AT FORT FISHER The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher’s new “Otters on the Edge” habitat features a furry family of Asian small-clawed otters.

These high-energy and curious creatures explore their surroundings, swim in their pools and are “otterly” delightful to observe as they discover new ways to play. The otters are on habitat daily from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., though times may vary. While in Kure Beach take in all its natural beauty when you walk along the shoreline of Fort Fisher State Recreation Area and hike along its Basin Trail. Breathtaking vistas are also found at Fort Fisher State Historic Site, Kure Beach Oceanfront Park, and the Kure Beach Fishing Pier. While you’re on the island, enjoy a stroll along the iconic Carolina Beach Boardwalk and a hike at Carolina Beach State Park (and check out the park’s new cabins). Stop by the

Veggie Wagon for local produce, jams, snacks and beverages. Savor island flavors at longtime favorite island eateries and new restaurants such as Coast Craft Cocktails & Calabash and Malama Café. EXPLORE WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH FROM THE WATER With its crystal blue waters and pristine surroundings, Wrightsville Beach is a vibrant community that embraces an active lifestyle. The island is renowned as a top watersport destination with an established surf and SUP culture. Visitors now have more ways than ever to explore Wrightsville Beach from the water. The resort’s Surf to Sound Adventures include water activities and lessons for all ages. CYCLE ACROSS WILMINGTON Spring is ideal for a leisurely cycling adventure from the river to the sea. Rent a bike or bring your own to sightsee and enjoy spring flora along Wilmington’s 15-mile, mostly off-road Gary Shell Cross-City Trail. The multi-use trail connects Wade Park, Halyburton

Park, and Empie Park to the Heide-Trask Drawbridge at the Intracoastal Waterway. The trail provides bicycle and pedestrian access to recreational, cultural and educational destinations, including: Cameron Art Museum, Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden, Firefighter’s Memorial, Autumn Hall, Lumina Station, the UNCW campus, and more. For shorter excursions, choose the 2.5-mile Loop at Wrightsville Beach Park with spectacular views of marshes and the Intracoastal Waterway, or the 1.2-mile Island Greenway in Carolina Beach that connects the town’s parks. For a unique beach experience, rent a big-tire beach cruiser or touring bicycle from a local outfitter. A truly thrilling cycling experience awaits at Blue Clay Bike Park’s 8-mile, single-track mountain bike trail (that’s right--a mountain trail at the coast!) in nearby Castle Hayne. DISCOVER WILMINGTON’S WWII HISTORY To commemorate contributions by Wilmington to the World War II home-front war effort, on Sept. 2, 2020—75 years to the day after the war ended—Wilmington became the first city in the country to be designated an "American World War II Heritage City." The designation celebrates contributions by Wilmington to the World War II home-front war effort. From the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA (a WWII memorial credited with 15 battle stars) and Hannah Block Historic USO (with its WWII homefront heritage lobby display) to Fort Fisher State

Historic Site (where WWII soldiers were trained) and Fort Fisher State Recreation Area (where a WWII bunker remains a hidden gem today), the area’s historic contribution to the war effort is evidenced throughout the county. Exhibits at the Cape Fear Museum of History and Wilmington Railroad Museum further interpret Wilmington’s role during World War II. Read more about the military history of Wilmington or craft your own self guided tour by downloading the WWII Heritage Guide Map (tinyurl.com/WilmingtonWWIIGuideMap).

DINE AL FRESCO & ENJOY THE VIEW From the Riverwalk and rooftops to boardwalks and piers, outdoor dining is a way of life for coastal visitors and residents. WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT Sometimes you just have to show up. It is not always easy to do so; work schedules get in the way; health issues can be a concern; transportation is not always easy to arrange; and the biggie f or many, especially in these challenging economic times, is the matter of money. These were, to one degree to another, all valid reasons I had for choosing not to go to the Chicago Marathon, my daughter’s first. She was after all no longer a little girl--she was forty-six years old in fact—and this event was really not the same sort of thing as her graduation, marriage, first child, etc. In other words, it was perfectly acceptable for me to stay home. In truth, because of all of the above, she discouraged me from coming. “It's okay Mom, in fact I don’t want you to come; you probably won't be able to see me anyway; there may be more than 45,000 people running.” All of these reasons seemed valid to both of us and I settled down; my conscience soothed, my practical considerations made perfect sense. But then my daughter said her cousin would also be running and that my sister would be in Chicago to watch her. Now what did I do? I pictured my sister hugging my niece after the race and my daughter’s face as she was standing nearby—you probably know the rest—I took out my credit card, packed up my pills, threw some clothes in a bag and telephoned my daughter to pick me up at O’Hare. There was no mistaking the joy on the other end of the line. When my sister and niece arrived, they also checked themselves into the charming 1920s small hotel — with its English library atmosphere-next door to the ef f iciency where my

daughter lived, we began what would become one big weekend-long party—the happiest, the most ebullient, with the most laughter — I have probably ever experienced. When my middle daughter arrived a day or so later, we were in high gear. The night before the big race, we all went to bed early. Both excited and nervous, I said a prayer for my daughter, for my niece and for the people I had seen in the video, The Spirit of the Marathon—a young divorcee hoping to rebuild her self -esteem; a world-class prof essional rebuilding her strength af ter a particularly debilitating injury and an elite Kenyan (one who had finished second or third but never first) and the poverty he had escaped still rampant in his hometown. Now I would cheer for these people, too, and if not them in particular, people just like them. I was ready to take my post the next morning. Grabbing a hot cup of coffee and donning my winter jacket, I headed to the end of the street at 7:30 a.m. It was 31 degrees outside and only a very few people were out there, it was pretty

much near the beginning of the race-at the six mile or so mark at Addison--most runners would be going by much later. But I wanted to see the elite runners, represented almost exclusively by the Kenyans—like beautiful gazelles, graceful and inspiring. It was as if I had a front row seat at the Olympics when the winner-ofthe-gold zoomed by. When I saw my niece run by my sister and me, the intensity of my feeling caught me unaware, with tears running down my face; she looked so light on her feet, so bubbly, just like a two-year old racing ahead to her favorite swing on the playground. I was so proud. When my daughter came into view, I can’t explain why, there was something about her being in the midst of all those runners, which seared right through me. It was a marvelous, unspeakable moment. She saw me, ran over to the sidewalk, grabbed my hand and gave me a high five; the grin on her face radiated—in that instant I saw her all the way from my holding her when she was just born, all the way up through the years which followed—I was overcome.

Most people experience a sudden change at least once in their lives. An unexpected death of a loved one, an abrupt move to a new home, an unforeseen health issue, or a job loss with little notice can leave the person experiencing the event in shock, confused, and often desperate for help. Even if the event doesn't cause trauma, sudden change isn't something most people prepare for, much less know how to handle. How can you gain back your sanity and find peace after a sudden, life-changing event? These five tips can help.

Don't go it alone. While a sudden change might affect only you, you don't have to deal with it alone--nor should you. Turn to others for support. Friends, family, and counselors can provide comfort in the days and weeks following the event and help you deal with your grief or concerns more objectively. People who have been through sudden change themselves can be especially helpful in offering empathy and useful advice for coping and regaining a sense of normalcy. Put yourself on a schedule. After a sudden change, life can get off-kilter. Although a break in routine is normal and expected, try to put yourself back on a schedule, even if it's a modified one. Routine provides structure, which can help make coping with sudden change easier. A routine can be as simple as getting up and going to bed at the same time daily, eating scheduled meals, and engaging in activities that are conducive to healing.

MACHINES

Look forward. Once a sudden change

occurs, there's likely nothing you can do to reverse it. So keep your sights on the future rather than the past. Try to see the positive aspects of the life-changing event, such as the loved one who passed is now out of pain or the home you lost will be replaced by something better. Re-living the days leading up to the event won't help you find peace, but devising a plan for brighter days ahead will. You can start by jotting down ideas on paper.

Give yourself time. Don't put pressure on

yourself to overcome your hardship quickly. Suffering a sudden event, especially a traumatic one, takes time to heal. In fact, depending on the event, time may be the most important factor in finding peace after a sudden change. There will be good days and bad days, but you should eventually feel a lightening of your burden. If time doesn't help bring peace, consider consulting a professional for further help.

Celebrate your progress. After a sud-

den change, the last thing you may want to think about is celebrating. But every step towards healing is an effort worth recognizing, so make time to do something nice for yourself throughout the coping process. Soak in the tub, treat yourself to a meal out, or visit with a friend. Allow yourself to laugh and have fun again. Not only do you deserve a little celebration, it will help inspire you to continue on the path to regaining peace. Finding peace after a life-changing event may seem like an impossible task, but the road to recovery can be smoother than you think. With a little time, help, and self-praise, anyone can regain their peace of mind--and learn to enjoy life once again.

movie night Written by Heather S. Parsons • heather@trianglestyle.com

Philomena is a truly wonderful film. One of those rare films that takes a tragic story and doesn’t play it for all it’s worth. Instead it mixes joy with humor, tragedy with triumph of the human spirit and it does so with honesty and grace. It’s Philomena’s story but it also belongs to Martin Sixsmith, the investigative journalist who helped Philomena search for Anthony, the son who was taken from her by the nuns at Sean Ross Abbey in Ireland and handed over to a woman from America who had come to adopt a little girl and then decided to take Anthony along too. Philomena’s story begins in the Ireland of the 1950s, when unwed mothers such as she were sent to a convent where they not only gave birth to their child but were well-schooled in the shame of their “sin” as well. And after their child was born, they were expected to work for four years to pay for their “maternal care,” if you would like to call Philamena’s difficult delivery an example of maternal care. But to have to watch over her child, from the time he was born until he was adopted, was just horrendous. For when Anthony was a baby, Philomena sang him lullabies; when he was one, she watched him take his first steps; and when he was three, she got down on the floor and played with him. Then one day she looked out of a window on the upstairs landing and saw Anthony standing in the backseat of a strange car, looking up at her, as it drove away. As Martin Sixsmith discovered, Philomena’s story did not end there. Even though its bittersweet ending found me crying, it was with a quiet joy, yet one so very tender. For Journalist Martin Sixsmith, who wrote The Lost Child Of Philomena Lee: A Mother, Her Son and A Fifty Year Search, I felt immensely grateful. EAST OF EDEN Winning the Best Actor award for his portrayal of Cal, this was the role that catapulted James Dean into the icon of the sensitive, misunderstood, overwrought and brooding young man. When the film begins, prior to World War I, Cal has just discovered his mother is not dead, as his father had told him and his brother Aron. She is still very much alive, living in Monterey, earning her living by running a brothel. And she isn’t the least bit sorry, for her marriage to Adam, listening to his prayers, living in the farming

community of Salinas, had exacerbated her already restless spirit. Cal fears he is “bad like his mother. Why can’t he good like Aron?”. Adam wonders the same thing, for Cal is always getting in one sort of trouble or another. However, when Adam’s vegetable crop fails, Cal decides to buy some land, so he can grow beans; he thinks there will be a great profit in them if war comes. When it does come, Cal proudly hands Adam the profit. This, he is sure, will make his father love him every bit as much as he already loves Aron. But Adam, a respected member of the community’s war effort, says he doesn’t want any part of Cal’s money. Aron’s modest gift, he says, pleases him so much more. Painfully jealous, Cal takes Aron to “meet” their mother. You know the story: it’s always worth the retelling. THE BISHOP’S WIFE If you would like something light, an old-fashioned romantic comedy for instance, you can’t go wrong by letting Cary Grant, Loretta Young and David Niven entertain you. Voted Best Picture in 1948, this film, about a Bishop, his wife, and an angel who answers the Bishop’s call for guidance is downright charming. The sort of guidance Bishop Henry Brougham has in mind is his difficulty in raising money for a new cathedral. When an angel, who looks like an ordinary man, answers his call, he sees the help the Bishop really needs is more is in the realm of the spiritual. To focus on his failing marriage to Julia, to minister to the souls of his congregation, that is what’s really important. And as far as raising money to build a new cathedral goes, it would be much better spent on the poor. Because the Bishop his lost his spiritual footing, Julia wonders if her sadness is temporary or an omen of worse things to come. The Bishop isn’t the only one who needs help. When the angel sees Julia sitting on a park bench, watching men and women skate hand in hand, he offers her his arm and off they go, dancing in circles on the ice. Julia says she hasn’t been this happy in a very long time. Apparently neither has the angel. When the Bishop later sees how happy they look together,he tells the angel it’s time for him to go home. He is now quite aware of the sort of guidance he has needed.
