I’ve listened to their cries of help for years and thought I had tried everything to remove the embarrassing calluses (thick dead skin) that have built up these past 30 something years. CLIENT: Isabella SALON: PLUM Hair Atelier, Raleigh STYLIST: Erin Isabella has been our client since she was 15. (she’s 23 now!) Actually both she and her mother have been clients and we're so lucky!

Isabella has always been open­minded and awesome and in a way we have been her "hair spirit guide" through many different colors and cuts (from pixies to long waves!). One year after she buzzed off one side of her long locks for a radical undercut, We both decided it was time for a change. So I cut 12+ inches of her hair into a punky short style. Then Isabella decided to grow it out, and a year later I gave her a bob in her natural color. Today, she is still growing out her bob with honey­colored Balayage on the tips.

CLIENT: Caroline SALON: Joule Salon, Cary STYLIST: Nicole During Caroline’s consultation with Nicole, she expressed her concerns for lower maintenance hair color and her wishes of a dramatic change. She still wanted to feel blonde but did not want to be in the salon every four weeks. Nicole took a through evaluation of Caroline’s hair taking notic of her traditional highlight’s, the conditio of her hair and the previous hair color history.

Nicole came up with a few options and together they agreed on deepening her base color with an Ombre technique with some Balayage highlights around the face.

The results were fabulous...a very happy client with a modern color trend.

Rachel’s hair was very fine and lifeless before the hair extension application. She was looking for a natural look with more body and length. Rachel received 140 bonds that are 16” in length to achieve this customized look. According to Julie Hendricks, owner of J. Alane's Fine Lingerie and Other Essentials located in Raleigh’s Cameron Village, around 80% of women walk around with the wrong size bra. And trust me, Julie's great with numbers. In fact, before opening up J. Alane's, she spent years working in accounting and finance.

Now she spends her days sizing up women and their bust lines. Julie wants to make sure that each lady that leaves her lovely shop sports only two beautiful breasts ­ not with four bumps bubbling out of their bras or an elongated “uni­boob” flattened across their chest.

After a warm introduction, Julie whisked me back into a comfortable fitting room and instantly became my bosom buddy.

My new breast friend worked fast too.

Julie only took her tape measure to me once ­ and then quickly eyeballed my cup size. After giving her quite an eyeful ­ she had my number right away.

For the best band size, Julie says to “only add 2” ­ 3” to your rib cage measurement”, not the 4” or 5”, as most other old school bra fitters do. The entire band should stay flush to your skin ­ with no gapping in between your breasts.

A slightly snugger fit ensures that your bra will move with you, so you won't have to constantly tug at it trying to keep your tah­tahs in tow. As for you cup size, she suggests that since most women have slightly different size breasts, that you fit for the larger cup first, and then you can line the other side with padding to even things up, if necessary. You want your breasts to fill up the cup, not run over or pucker up.

While her super sweet sales assistant helped round up some pretty bras for me to try on, Julie gave me some advice, starting with the lacy little brassiere I'd worn that day, in an effort to undress to impress. “Front closing bras don't give

you anywhere to go”, she explained, “You need at least 2 or 3 rows of hooks to find the right fit”.

She suggested that when I buy a new bra, always start hooking with the first row, and work my way back as the elastic relaxes.

And speaking of backs ­ it's always best to fasten your bra behind you. The 'ole Hookey-Pookey method of turning the bra around just stretches it out, and that's not what it's all about. As for the dreaded back­fat, (yup, it’s a thing!); “The reality,” Hendricks explains, is that “getting rid of it is just an illusion.” As long as a bra is snug enough to provide support, there is going to be at least a slight indentation. For those of us with something best described as a “deeper divot”, she suggests that the band can be worn lower to minimize the appearance. “Also,” Hendricks gently reminds, “Sometimes knits are not our friends.”

fit into a 36B, but decide you like the feel (or bragging rights) of a smaller band size, you'd end up in a 34C. Another thing I learned is that when you come in for a fitting, you need to keep an open mind as you open your blouse. For years I'd been buying a 36B ­ when in fact, it turns out I'm really a 36DD. Yikes! At least she didn't have to reach into the Greek alphabet to find my fit. But I wasn't Julie's first client to misjudge my jugs. One of her customers, Julie contends, went from a 38D to a 32H. Take that Dolly Parton!

It seems that a majority of American women these days are naturally fuller busted. Breast augmentation is certainly big business right now, but according to Julie's observations, gals who come into her store with a size G are not implant patients. Much of her clientele is looking for ways to dial it down a bit. A lot of women, due to age, childbirth or weight­loss, suddenly find themselves an abundance of loose skin, which can practically be rolled up like a roman shade. But even her larger size bras are very sexy, while still being supportive.

However, with good care and a proper fit ­ a well­made bra should last for years. She'd only hint, however, that like a good book, a woman should never be judged by her cover. Some of her most preppy girls have some interesting tattoos and body art hidden under those pearls and pretty Pulitzer dresses ­ but that was the only dirty laundry I could shake out from her. Being professional and discreet is what keeps her clients coming back for more.

That, and the fact that Julie makes good on her claim that she can “lift your breasts from your waistline, so high that you can practically eat off them.” You won't get a promise like that from the check out gal at Costco.

Here's how to make sure you're sporting the ideal specs for you....

HEART SHAPED Heart­Shaped Faces usually look like just that ­ a heart!

With the widest section of the face at the top and slowly drawing to a "point" at the chin. This prominent chin is the key to a true heart­shaped face.

WHAT TO CONSIDER:

When heart­shapes select specs the primary goal is to counteract the more broad part of the face at the top and widen the bottom. Avoid frames that draw attention to the forehead area.

OVAL SHAPED Oval faces tend to have a more balanced look overall, making it the easiest shape to fit frames. This shape looks great in almost all types of glasses ­ the lucky shape!

WHAT TO CONSIDER:

Keeping an already proportionate balance is the goal when choosing glasses of the oval shaped face, so steer clear of frames that overwhelm your face. Wider frames placed at the widest part of the face help to keep this balance. Go for details and accents on frames if you're an oval, consider yourself lucky ­ pretty much anything goes with this desirable shape!

Keep in mind that people with rounder faces need to select frames that are more wide than tall. This wideness slims facial features. Test out frames with prints, brighter colors and other exaggerated details. Adding these curves by wearing frames that are more round than squared, draws unwanted attention away from the sharp jaw. Rule 101: choose frames that more wide than tall ­ wide frames slim a face down. Often times as we age our skin will start to sag; this loss of elasticity can also cause the appearance of under eye bags. There are other causes for this such as diet, exercise (or lack of) , heredity, and allergies. If your under eye bags are not from heredity or general aging, you may be able to get rid of them with better diet and exercise and even a good old fashioned antihistamine.

Unfortunately, cucumber slices and Preparation H will not really do the trick. For a more permanent fix a blepharoplasty, which is a surgical procedure that involves melting the fat inside the under-eye bags and then tucking the loose skin that remains, is your best option.

It's an outpatient procedure that takes about an hour, and you'll need about two weeks for recovery. For a temporary aid, with results that last about 8 months, my suggestion would be having a filler such as Restylane® or Juvéderm® injected under the eyes. It may sound counter intuitive, however, the filler will help even out the irregularity and give a smoother under eye appearance. A word of caution about filler under the eyes, it can look lumpy if not performed by a skilled injector. While there are eye creams on the market that claim to help with puffiness, in my experience they generally do not work as well as promised. If this is a serious concern for you, I would save up your money and put it towards a procedure with a more guaranteed outcome.

tips for decorating your outdoor living spaces

With warmer temperatures and longer days, we are all naturally drawn to outdoor living.

Here in North Carolina, most of our homes include at least one area to encourage outdoor living. These spaces include four season sunrooms, screened porches, decks, patios, and ďŹ repit areas. I am frequently asked how to maximize the use of these terriďŹ c spaces and how to decorate them. The key is to take the same decorating principles that we all use inside our homes and apply them to our outdoor living spaces.

The Deck For any space that you are making comfortable and beautiful for enjoying the outdoors, first decide how the space is going to be used. A grilling deck may only need a few comfortable chairs to use while your food is cooking. If space permits, add a small table to hold the items you will be using while cooking outdoors.

A small grilling deck can then also double as an outdoor dining space.

Select seating/lounging furniture that will withstand the sun and rain. Cushions should be made using outdoor fabrics that are rain resistant, fade resistant, and mold resistant. Equally as important,

Often these spaces include an outdoor rated ceiling fan to keep the air circulating. When adding a screened porch, take note on how this space will block daylight from entering your indoor living spaces. If a screened porch will impede light from entering the home, add skylights to the roof of the screened porch. These skylights can have batter operated, remote controlled shades to maximize their effectiveness. Comfortable seating is the highest priority in a screened porch area. area and add interest to the screened porch. As with any room, tables are needed to hold the items you will be using on the screened porch and for task lighting for both day and night tim use.

As with our indoor living spaces, accessories help personalize our outdoor spaces and add interest.

Consider the outdoor wall space as a blank canvas to add artwork intended for the outdoors. These can be actual pieces of outdoor art, metal sculptures or Tableaux™ faux iron works, and wall mounted water features. Accent pillows will make your outdoor furniture more comfortable and add a pop of color. With outdoor pillows, push yourself to be more bold than you would be with pillows for your Living Room or Family Room. After all, outdoor living is intended to be fun! As with the cushions on your outdoor furniture, only select pillows made with outdoor fabrics and quick drying inserts.

Finally, if privacy is an issue with an outdoor living space, there are many options available without having to build a privacy wall! Outdoor fabrics can be used to make panels that can open and close when privacy is needed. Install these only on powder coated drapery hardware so that the hardware will withstand the elements. Consider options to secure the bottom corners of the panels as well so that they do not become “sails” with windy weather.

Natural basswood shades can be made in custom sizes and stains to add privacy when needed. And outdoor screen roller shades give a filtered view and good privacy during the daylight hours in outdoor living spaces.

Pulling out of my parking space after a softball game at my daughter’s school, some 30 or so years ago, I spotted an old flat top trunk sticking out of the top of a dumpster. Because I had always wanted a trunk just like this one, I quickly scurried over to get a better look. Disappointed at how badly the trunk looked, realizing it was perhaps too far gone to bother restoring, I turned around and walked back to my car.

But I hesitated before getting inside; perhaps its original owner, a hundred or so years before, had loved this old trunk. Had it been her hope chest? Or perhaps a vessel into which she carefully placed her most prized possessions ­­ a few pieces of her mother’s best china, a favorite book, anything at all to make her life more pleasant. For she might have been leaving family and friends behind to settle in a new land.

Wouldn’t it break her heart to see what had become of her trunk, something carelessly thrown inside?

That was it; I would do what I could to salvage the old trunk before giving up on it. Then, instead of driving away, I backed my car alongside the dumpster, and with much pulling and stumbling, did my very best to lever it inside my car. On my way home I thought about another trunk, my grandmother’s trunk, and of the many wonderful hours my sister and I played dress­up with the clothes Grandma kept inside.

Every summer, my sister and I could hardly wait to drag that trunk, almost identical to the one I had just found, out from under the eaves in Grandma’s attic.

Filled to the brim with clothes from a bygone era: a Victorian floor length, white lacy dress with a high mother­of­pearl button collar; a pair of slender, laced, ankle length high heels, an old parasol, a peachy nightgown, pretty camisoles and even a 1920s chemise ­­ all of these kept my sister and me busy for hours and hours.

We asked Grandma to tell us about the times she spent wearing these clothes, but she changed the subject, saying she had always been of the opinion that it was “unseemly” to talk about oneself.

However she did tell us the story about another trunk, one that had belonged to her own grandmother, “Lady” Catherine Hartford of Ireland, who at just ten years of age, was put on a ship by her stepmother.

Sent unaccompanied on a long sea voyage over rough waters to Canada, destined to live with missionaries whom she had never met, the only thing young Lady Catherine had been allowed to bring with her to her new home was a large trunk that was filled with all her worldly belongings: good Irish linens and several bolts of cloth. When asked, Grandma said she had always wondered what happened to that trunk.

With these images in mind, I set to work restoring the trunk I had just found. Flattening the jagged parts of its tin exterior with a ballpeen hammer; gently hand sanding the worst parts of its pretty wood strapping, covering its musty interior with wallpaper, the trunk began to take shape. Finally, painting the exposed tin a dull black, generously oiling the wooden slats,

the trunk was now ready for me to put my own treasures inside.

From east coast to west coast, the trunk and its contents went with me. Finally, no longer able to get anything more inside without sitting on its top, I opened it up. Old letters, swim team awards, newspaper clippings from two world wars my grandmother had saved, report cards, a teddy bear, ballet shoes, pictures of our trip to Japan when the children were small.

It was a journey into the history of my own life.

Perhaps one day someone loving may find my trunk and care for it the way I did. But for now it will remain with me, its contents set aside for each of my daughters. I think the original owner of the trunk would be very proud.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SIGNS OF SKIN CANCER, AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY MOLES CHECKED?

Although most moles aren’t dangerous, some can lead to skin cancer or melanoma. SHOPPING FOR A PLASTIC SURGEON? REVIEW THIS CHECKLIST BEFORE YOUR NIP/TUCK If you are among the millions of people opting each year for some sort of surgical enhancement, you are not alone in your search for the ideal experienced plastic surgeon. Most people’s questions center around safety and results. With the right practitioner, cosmetic surgery can have a positive, powerful, and lasting impact on a person's life.

Start by looking for a board certified physician you can trust; someone highly trained in plastic and reconstructive surgery whose specialties match your specific needs. According to aesthetic plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Law, there are four things to look for when doing your research:

Education Seek out an ELITE surgeon who graduated from a top tier medical school, and at the top of their class. Find out if they are a member of the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. AOA is to medicine what Phi Beta Kappa is to undergraduate college. The Joint Commission (JCAHO) and the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities (AAAASF) are two of the organizations that can provide certification to expert surgical suites. Centers may even be dually certified.

Residency/Surgical Training There simply is no substitute for stellar academic and practical surgical training from prestigious medical universities. All board certified plastic surgeons have a minimum of five years surgical apprenticeship; some have as many as ten years formal surgical training.

Portfolio of Work Review photographic evidence of the surgeon’s clientele. Patients should be able to view before and after photos of their proposed procedure (taken from different perspectives with similar lighting, distance from the camera, and cropping). Are reviews favorable? And do the surgeon’s results look natural?

Also be sure that your anesthesia will be administered by a board certified M.D.

Initially discovering an old desk, Shanna began with the basics: She cleaned, sanded, lacquered and distressed the piece. Her biggest challenge was determining the height to make the galvanized piping that would separate the new desk from the 100 year old reclaimed barn wood. She knew she wanted the buyer to have enough space to store cuttin boards, and cookbooks without making the workspace too high.

AĀer she found the best height she continued the process to treat, stain, and seal the reclaimed wood to make it safe for food. She finished by telling me the key is in the details: where she also added a shelf underneath for storage, a pullout a. ached cuttin board, and a side row of hooks for utensils, creatin a dream workspace for any level chef.

A lonely looking church pew bought from a closing church began to take on a new life. The pew is now covered with a soft ivory lace laquear.

The table, pieced together from two separate projects, was finished with a stunning dovetail gray chalk coatin , and than waxed. The chairs were coated in the same matching color of the bench.

Next at the upholstery studio I watched a focused determined arti t create designer pillows and piping -all executed with the precision of a master seamstress. The grand finale was a transformation of the worn seats into an enti ely new identit covered in houndstooth fabric.

Once upon a time in your local Target store, a young man went in search of a clip-on tie to wear to a job interview. Triangle Style’s own Audrey Mark was in that store, and lucky enough to capture what happened next with a photo – and a story that went viral.

In case you missed it: as Target carries only regular ties, employees worked together to help the boy find a good one and then tie it. They went on to share interview advice and even recommend a proper handshake. A mesmerized Mark caught the moment with her phone.

“I think it was the genuine exchange of warmth and nurturing that the employees showed this eager young man that took me by surprise,” she said. The teen then did what they told him, step by step, and it gave him confidence. “You certainly don’t expect to find that kind of compassion on aisle 11 of a big box store!”

Mark says we’re all so busy rushing through our everyday lives, we rarely have the luxury of slowing down and savoring this type of sweetness. She was uplifted by the experience, tearily posting the iPhone photo to Facebook friends while still shopping, and later to Target to clue them in on their awesome staffers. “Those people stepped in and stepped up, even when they thought no one was watching,” she said.

Many saw the generosity of spirit in Mark’s post; when she went to sleep that night, it had garnered an astounding 150 likes and 15 shares. She and her husband were so pleased that the Target team might get a pat on the back and a handshake when they walked into work the next morning. Little did they know the whole world would soon like to give them a big high-five as the post was shared by the likes of CNN, Good Morning America, World News Tonight, People, Forbes and Cosmopolitan.

Mark says it was a small moment, but felt very powerful.

The act of kindness has been viewed and shared millions of times on practically every media outlet, eliciting thousands of comments. “It’s great when good news travels fast for a change – I’m just pleased that this time, I got to be the messenger!”

Boyhood is not a remarkable story but it certainly is a remarkable film. What gives the film an authenticity and a force it might not otherwise have had is that it was made over twelve years with the exact same cast, seeing them age onscreen in front of us.

The film is ostensibly a coming of age story about Mason, a six­year old boy, we follow from the time he is in elementary school until he goes off to college. But it is a coming of age story for his parents as well.
