NATURAL ESTHETICS

Amanda Grace Owner, Esthetician

Everyone has had to pivot in one way or What are your protocols for keeping another, what kind of changes has Natural customers safe? Esthetics made during this time? We only have two clients in at anytime and the treat-

We've added a contactless pay option. We of course wear masks throughout services and through the entire day. On days we are closed, I bring in a UV air purifier. The e is also plenty of hand sanitizer and we provide for masks for our guests. We already had private treatment rooms along with appointment scheduling, which minimizes unnecessary contact. I have also personally modified my hours to account for my kids virtual schooling as well as to reduce exposure due to my fathers health condition.

ment spaces are separated by walls and doors. We use clean bed sheets for every person along with gloves and masks being worn at all times. The e is sanitizer at the front desk and we offer contactless pay options.

Is there one particular treatment that has been more popular than the others?

2020 has had highs and lows but the best part for me has been less running around. Mom life is no joke! I'm enjoying having my kids in virtual school due to the additional time I’m getting to spend with them. It's kind of cool hearing your senior participate in class. I'd never get to be a part of that if it hadn’t been for this unique and historical year.

Lash extensions are always popular but people are getting them done for new reasons like an important meeting where only their eyes will be seen due to wearing their mask.

What has surprised you most about your customers adaptability? I’ve honestly been surprised by the steadiness of new clients coming in.

Best part of 2020 would be…?

HI ANNA, I

AM CURIOUS….COULD YOU GIVE A BIT OF SNEAK PEEK OF SORTS

OF ANY NEW PROCEDURES COMING OUR WAY FOR

Hi Jill! This is a great question, and one I am very excited to answer! If you know us at Synergy, then you know that we always strive to stay on the foref ront of the most advanced treatments and services in the aesthetics industry. Right now, we are obsessed with the amazing results we're seeing from PDO Threads. PDO stands for polydioxanone, which is the special medical-grade material that these threads are made of. PDO threads work by being inserted underneath the skin to lift, tone and tighten all while encouraging the production of your own body’s collagen. PDO Threads are fairly new to aesthetics but are FDAcleared and have been used safely in medicine for decades in various applications. Each thread is thinner than a piece of hair and made of protein that your body will naturally re-absorb over time. Depending on your goals, there are a few different types of threads available: smooth, barbed and twisted. By placing threads of different types and lengths around the face, we are able to lift and sculpt in a less-invasive way than can be done with traditional plastic surgery. This type of treatment is perfect for someone who has a little bit of skin laxity, but who isn’t quite ready for a full-on face lift or blepharoplasty. Results will last up to a year and a half for most people, and treatment is completely customizable based on your goals. If you’re considering a ref resh for the new year, we’d love to get you in for a consultation! Give us a call or go online to schedule a f ull face analysis with one of our expert providers to get you looking and feeling your best in 2021!

COMING ON EXHIBIT

Golden Mummies of Egypt Golden Mummies presents eight extraordinary mummies and explores beliefs about the afterlife during the era when Egypt was part of the Greek and Roman worlds (circa 300 B.C.E.–200 C.E.).

In a series of lavishly illustrated thematic sections, the exhibition uses the outstanding collections of the Manchester Museum to allow visitors to examine life for the wealthy in multicultural Roman Egypt, where diverse Egyptian, Roman, and Greek communities and cultural influences were blended. Theexhibition journey traces expectations for the afterlife and introduces cultural constructions of identity, strikingly demonstrated by the haunting painted panel portraits. The practices of p eservation and decoration of the body, and the transformation of the deceased into a god, are spectacularly shown by the mummies on display. Most people experience a sudden change at least once in their lives. An unexpected death of a loved one, an abrupt move to a new home, an unforeseen health issue, or a job loss with little notice can leave the person experiencing the event in shock, confused, and often desperate for help. Even if the event doesn't cause trauma, sudden change isn't something most people prepare for, much less know how to handle. How can you gain back your sanity and find peace after a sudden, life-changing event? These five tips can help.

Don't go it alone. While a sudden change might affect only you, you don't have to deal with it alone--nor should you. Turn to others for support. Friends, family, and counselors can provide comfort in the days and weeks following the event and help you deal with your grief or concerns more objectively. People who have been through sudden change themselves can be especially helpful in offering empathy and useful advice for coping and regaining a sense of normalcy. Put yourself on a schedule. After a sudden change, life can get off-kilter. Although a break in routine is normal and expected, try to put yourself back on a schedule, even if it's a modified one. Routine provides structure, which can help make coping with sudden change easier. A routine can be as simple as getting up and going to bed at the same time daily, eating scheduled meals, and engaging in activities that are conducive to healing.

MACHINES

Look forward. Once a sudden change

occurs, there's likely nothing you can do to reverse it. So keep your sights on the future rather than the past. Try to see the positive aspects of the life-changing event, such as the loved one who passed is now out of pain or the home you lost will be replaced by something better. Re-living the days leading up to the event won't help you find peace, but devising a plan for brighter days ahead will. You can start by jotting down ideas on paper.

Give yourself time. Don't put pressure on

yourself to overcome your hardship quickly. Suffering a sudden event, especially a traumatic one, takes time to heal. In fact, depending on the event, time may be the most important factor in finding peace after a sudden change. There will be good days and bad days, but you should eventually feel a lightening of your burden. If time doesn't help bring peace, consider consulting a professional for further help.

OAK PARK SHOPPING CENTER 6013 GLENWOOD AVE, RALEIGH (919) 782-2945 BERNINAWORLDOFSEWING.COM

Celebrate your progress. After a sud-

den change, the last thing you may want to think about is celebrating. But every step towards healing is an effort worth recognizing, so make time to do something nice for yourself throughout the coping process. Soak in the tub, treat yourself to a meal out, or visit with a friend. Allow yourself to laugh and have fun again. Not only do you deserve a little celebration, it will help inspire you to continue on the path to regaining peace. Finding peace after a life-changing event may seem like an impossible task, but the road to recovery can be smoother than you think. With a little time, help, and self-praise, anyone can regain their peace of mind--and learn to enjoy life once again.

5 Healthy Comfort Food Hacks

There's nothing better than chilling out in front of the TV with your favorite comfort food snack. However, contrary to widely held beliefs, comfort food doesn't necessarily have to be unhealthy or junk food. So, here are five favorite comfort food snacks to keep you satisfied and help keep off the pounds.

Butternut Squash for Fries

It's astonishing how severely underrated butternut squash is to the public. It's incredibly tasty, the perfect density and has low carbs and calories. Rather than cracking open a fresh packet of potato based French fries, grab a butternut squash and cut it into spears. Chuck in a bit of salt and pepper and let it bake for 35 minutes at about 430 degrees. They smell intoxicating, and the flavors are beyond anything you have tasted before. You can also use butternut squash as a general replacement for potatoes.

Cut Your Potato with Cauliflower

Now, everyone is going crazy for cauliflower, and with good reason. Cauliflower not only tastes awesome, but it is low in calories and counts as one of your five fruit and vegetables for a day. Rather than a full portion of mash potatoes, take half your usual portion of mash and mix it in with cauliflower. Not only does it taste great, but it also means you can have a larger helping (which fills you up more) without ingesting more calories. You'll either notice that your mash suddenly tastes better or not see any difference at all. Either way, it's a win-win situation.

Meat/Veggie Loaf

Everyone loves meatloaf, but the truth is, it's a caloric nightmare. However, this doesn't have to be the case. Firstly, use lean ground beef and throw in loads of vegetables to increase the size of the overall loaf. The best vegetables to use are mushrooms and onions; they go particularly well with beef. Also, if you like a bit of a kick to your food, throw in some hot peppers or a habanero. You can now take even larger sizes of meatloaf without ingesting loads of calories. As an additional bonus, you can also add healthy sauces to your meatloaf. Try seedy mustard, which is more robust than most other mustards and enhances the taste.

Spaghetti Squash

While it might sound like a weird option, you can swap out regular egg-based noodles, with squash based noodles. More grocery stores are starting to stock this alternative. Not only does it taste great, but also a cup of these noodles only comes to a whopping 40 calories. Therefore, not only is it a flavorsome replacement, but it also means you can pig out on larger portions.

Cookies

Did you know that a cookie a day keeps the doctor away? Well, OK, that's a lie. However, that doesn't mean cookies have to be unhealthy. The next time you are baking cookies, take half of your all-purpose flour and replace it with the whole-wheat variety. That adds whole grains to your cookies, which is great for your heart. Also, switch out that milk chocolate for a 70% cocoa chocolate, which is far healthier and even gives you an antioxidant boost.

PRIDE, PREJUDICE, AND OTHER FLAVORS

by Kerry Greenwood

by Sonali Dev

(CORINNA CHAPMAN #1)

Corinna Chapman is a plus-sized baker who owns her own shop in Melbourne, Australia, is perfectly happy with her size, incredibly satisfied with her life, and wonderfully fulfilled by her relationship with a Jewish ex-Israeli soldier-turnedprivate eye, her ex-drug addict apprentice, her quirky cast of friends and neighbors, and her charming cats. There are seven books in this series, and each one features a new mystery Corinna helps her partner to solve, new characters to adore, and new recipes to try at home. While these are intended for adults, teenagers should enjoy them as well.

(THE RAJES #1)

Paying cheeky homage to Jane Austen’s beloved books, the pride and prejudice in this novel come in all flavors for both main characters, as an Indian-American neurosurgeon and a Rwandan-Anglo-Indian chef meet their match together in life and love. While Dr. Trisha Raje and DJ Caine are thrown together by family responsibilities and reluctantly drawn to each other for reasons neither want to identify, the rest of the family members are just as intriguingly introduced, making the happily ever after ending of this book only the beginning of this wonderful new series.

THE THIRTY NAMES OF NIGHT by Zeyn Joukhadar

Zeyn Joukhadar builds upon his success with The Map of Salt and Stars in his second novel. Intertwined stories in the style of Persian fables play together like the multiple movements of a concerto, alternating between fast-paced dramas and slow, thoughtful exposition. History and memory, art and literature, queer and immigrant identities, familial and community expectations, self-discovery and exploration all blend together toward a crescendo of heartbreaking brilliance that has come to be expected from this incredibly talented writer.

AND THE PEOPLE STAYED HOME

by Kitty O’Meara, illustrated by Stefano Di Cristofaro & Paul Pereda

This is a gorgeously-illustrated and timely picture book that lyrically explains what quarantining during COVID has been like for readers young and old. Beloved by everyone from Deepak Chopra to Kate Winslet, the entire family will love this picture book written by the “Poet Laureate of the Pandemic” as a memento of this historic time. How to Use New Lighting to Brighten a Dark Home

As the days get shorter the sun goes down early and you may be all too aware that there are too many dark corners or inadequately lit spaces in your home. This is the time to take a good look at your interior lighting and add new fixtures and lamps. Follow these simple steps to know what works best for you and your family. 1. Decide What to Focus On Naturally, if you read, craft or cook in an area where you can't always seem to see what you are doing, the first thing to consider is task lighting. Downward lighting provides illumination on a specific spot and can even be used to highlight objects in a collection. It is especially practical over a kitchen counter. But, if you want the area to feel cozy, lighting should be near a seating area but not directly on it. This type of lighting is also best near a TV or computer to avoid glare.

2. Mix and Match Different Types of Lighting If you do a wide variety of activities in one area, such as the living room, add several different types of lighting to suit your needs. Installing a combination of ambient, task and overhead lighting will give you the most versatility. Don't forget to consider the lampshades because different amounts of light shine through different materials. Light shining through a colored shade instantly brightens a room. 3. Get the Right Fixture for the Job Now that you know what your needs are, it will be less confusing to look at the vast array of lighting options available for your home. Fluorescent lights are great for basement workshops and kitchens but look harsh in other areas of the house. If you don't want many different types of fixtures in a room, use a dimmer to control the overhead light. Lamps, sconces and pendant lights all brighten dark corners.

COVID Crafting Turns Hobbies into Holiday Treats

About once a year, when the weather turns cold, I get the urge to pull out my knitting needles. My mother taught me how to knit when I was a little girl; she had learned from her mother. I sleep under a blanket of crocheted squares made by my grandmother; I’ve knitted countless hats and booties for friends’ new babies. I love that generational line of love passed down through the making of a handicraft. But the truth is, after reminiscing over the family knitting needles, perusing the balls of yarn, and spending way too much money on new skeins, I am inevitably reminded about two weeks into my first project that I am the world’s… slowest…knitter. Which is why big chunky yarn, knitted on the thickest of needles, making a large warm blanket in about half the time was a thrilling discovery! In sharing this breakthrough with friends, it turns out I was not the only one who had explored crafting hobbies this year. Whether they were COVID crafting or rediscovering holiday hobbies, this is what others had to say about this year’s crafting adventures.

“I finally started enjoying making things when I started enjoying the making, more than the things.” – Jenna L. “I picked up knitting in high school as a means of saving my sanity during the dark, solitary days of fighting Lyme disease. Fastforward 20+ years to April 2020, when I had a very scary six-week bout with COVID. I turned to my trusty knitting needles and yarn, and found solace in the rhythm of every stitch. In a month, I had watched every season of my favorite show and had knit my dear friend a baby blanket. For me, knitting is my go-to meditation; it just happens to have the perk of producing something cozy and imbued with love.” – Shane P. “My new hobby is raising cacti and succulents. I don’t see results very quickly, but it’s cheaper than drinking.” – Terri S. “I focused on learning some new crochet techniques as a COVID project! I’m a knitter, usually, but I’ve been meaning to strengthen my crochet skills for a while. I’ve also found that focusing on learning something new is more soothing right now than anything else I’ve tried.” – Amy B. “My sister-in-law taught me basic knitting years ago. Now, I’ve picked it up again, as I have also picked up sewing. I feel productive when I create something. I’ve been productive at work during COVID, but at the end of a project, I have something to show for it. I also think I enjoy it because it’s dusting off memories of my grandmothers and my mom, which is nice since they are all no longer of this world.” – Diana B.

“I’ve started visible mending, mostly darning, since the pandemic started. Not only has it been a fun hobby, but it speaks to a few things I really needed more of in my life: taking something broken and making it whole again, reducing waste, learning a new skill, and buying fewer things.” – Rachel B. “I’ve been a knitter since I was a teenager. It helps with my anxiety and PTSD. I’ve really stepped up my knitting game this year. I always do knitted gifts along with books for holiday gifts. But I love knitting all year ‘round.” – Annie C. “I was so busy teaching this spring and summer that I made time only to sew some masks since I really needed them. Since I’ve been off this fall term, though, I’ve gotten to reorganize my workspace and do more fun crafting projects. In fact, I just pulled out some yarn and crocheted for the first time in forever! I forgot how much I enjoyed it. Now that the election is over, I’d like to reduce my time spent on social media, and crochet seems like just the thing to keep my hands busy and off my phone.” – Amy D.

WRITTEN BY LOU SCOTT The Greek philosopher Aristotle said, “We are what we repeatedly do.” I am not sure how to express his concept in scientific terms, but for the sake of simplicity let me say that both Aristotle and my very wise mother, who was well-versed in his philosophy, were right according to the recent findings of neuroscience. The brain, it turns out, is flexible. And the good news is that a change in our bad habits into good ones creates a helpful change in our brain’s neural pathways. When I first heard of this concept, I thought that training my brain to act differently was nothing more than wishful thinking. Nonetheless when my balance became a little shaky, I went to a physical therapist who said she could help me to sidestep this problem

She led me to a high-tech machine, had me stand on its platform and hooked me up to straps secured around my waist to keep me from falling. Then the platform swayed back and forth, side to side, as well as both at the same time. As it turned out my center of balance was far from perfect. It was on the lower left side of my body and not in the middle, where it should have been. I was assigned a host of daily exercises, increasing in complexity. Last week my foot nicked a hole on a walking path. But I did not pitch forward or fall. Instead I caught myself without thinking about it. I had indeed “rewired” my brain. Changing our habits can also alter the way our brain responds to the environment. Do we want to be less anxious? Or to have faith in

to create habits that promote positive ways of thinking. No matter what our age, parts of our brains remain “plastic,” meaning it’s never too late to develop new skills, to expand our enjoyment of life or to create different ways of seeing the world. I’d like to share an experience of my own. About twenty years ago, I realized I had slowly slipped into the habit of seeing life from a negative point of view. What happened to that optimistic, enthusiastic person I used to be? This question came to the forefront when my mother, a spontaneous, looking on the bright side sort of person, came for a visit. The first thing she saw as she pulled into the driveway was my husband jack hammering the sidewalk leading to our front door. She seemed not to notice. Instead she smiled and gingerly worked her way past. Stopping for a moment, she looked up. “What a beautiful sky,” she said. “I haven’t seen one this blue in a long time.” Once inside the house, I said I felt just awful that the refrigerator had broken down that very morning.“No sense in wringing our hands over it,” she said. “We’ll go out to eat. Anything within walking distance?“ “Only a McDonald’s,”

I answered. “Oh that would be fun; I’ve often wondered what’s one’s like inside.” Thus we soldiered on to McDonald’s, squeezed together, walking on an uneven sidewalk, with traffic zooming by. Mom seemed positively elated. On the way back home, she said how fortunate I was to have so much convenience within my grasp: a museum, library, church, grocery store, even a new Y. I hadn’t looked at it that way. Instead of resenting leaving my lovely 1749 farmhouse, with its wide front porch and sweeping Spanish oak trees dripping with moss, I practiced being grateful for having had the experience. Consequently my focus shifted to the advantages of living in the city. And at this stage of my life, to have so much to do within walking distance, even for my grandchildren whenever they visit, has turned out to be a wise decision. And the habit of counting those blessings has opened new neural pathways in my brain: leaving my former gloomy attitude behind and moving my new positive attitude to the sunny side of the street. •••

EVERY ONE…AN AWARD WINNING FILM A PLACE IN THE SUN, based on An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser and starring a young Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clif t and Shelley Winters, is about George Eastman, a struggling young man who works as an elevator operator in Chicago and then goes to California to ask his rich uncle, whom he barely knows, to give him a job in his factory, which he does – but not before he tells George it is against company policy to date coworkers. Nonetheless, George soon begins a secret relationship with Alice, a girl who works alongside him on the assembly line. When George’s hard work gets him both a promotion and a relationship with Angela, the beautif ul debutante he loved at f irst sight - daughter of his uncle’s f riend - he tries to extricate himself f rom his association with Alice. However, Alice has absolutely no intention of letting George go - she is pregnant and expects him to marry her. Desperate, George doesn’t know what to do. All he knows is that his glittering dream of a better life may be ruined. WIVES AND DAUGHTERS, an engaging adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s book, is a BBC mini-series about love and family relationships against the background of the decline of the landed gentry and the rise of the middle class. On one hand, there is the squire and his two sons - the elder is secretly married to a French woman and the younger is more interested in scientific research than in his father’s estate. And on the other hand, there is the respected country doctor, his sensible and virtuous daughter, his shallow but very pretty stepdaughter and of course his wife – a widow who dedicates herself to delicate manners and a search for a wealthy husband for her daughter. THE RED SHOES, exquisitely digitalized, is the one film that made people who weren’t interested in ballet stand up and cheer. Though the ballet is the centerpiece, this film is every bit as much about the people who are part of it: the composer, the obsessive director of the ballet company who commissions his score, and the ballerina whose passion is the sort that makes the red shoes keep on dancing. But it’s not that simple: when the dancer falls in love with the composer, one passion threatens to consume the other.
