It’s become an institution in our closets – a mainstay which we can turn to when all else fails, made popular by Coco Chanel in the 1920’s. Yet - gulp - the LBD really isn’t the best choice for everyone, but more than that, it can be a bit boring. I’d like to show you life beyond the little black dress and open you up to all the amazing possibilities a dress can bring!

I want to help guide you to finding your own best alternative to the little black dress. Why, you might ask? Because black is not the most flattering color for all women, but it’s also very expected. Personally, I’ve had an aversion to wearing black recently and have only wanted to wear colors that make me happy. I want to encourage you to wear something that’s going to make you feel like a million bucks and stand out from the crowd, not just something that’s so simple that most of the women at any given cocktail party will have one on. So let’s get to work to find what’s going to make you look beautiful, whether it’s a turquoise sheath or a boldly printed sundress. Black is defined as the absence of color. When you wear color, that color is reflected onto your skin. When you wear a virtual black hole of pigment, that, too, is reflected onto your skin and can leave you with an unflattering pallor. I know all the reasons for wearing black. It’s easy. Women have come to think of it as their fallback, almost like their security blanket when they’re not sure what else to wear. When you don’t know what else to wear, you wear black, right? Well I want to help you to choose the right color for you! This summer color is all the rage and you’ll find it everywhere! But what I’ve found is that when women know what looks good on them, they’re much more risk taking. They opt for bold, bright colors in styles that flatter their figure, and they look like a fantastic! HERE ARE A FEW OF THEIR SECRETS:
• Wear your eye color - If you have blue or green eyes, a beautiful sea-green or aqua dress will make you look amazing. No matter what your coloring, blue-greens are skin-intensifying colors and work well when you’re showing off more skin, such as in a sundress or a pair of strappy sandals. • A lacy dress in your skin color (whether it’s ivory, mocha or black) will enhance your skin tone and look dazzling! If you must wear black, black lace with a nude or contrasting lining, a little embroidery or a metallic accent will create a softer look that is more flattering.

Celebrities seem to clamor over boyfriend jeans as much as the rest of the population. These jeans are actually pretty easy to dress up or down. Bonus, they work for almost every body type and size. If you're petite (like Rachel Bilson) don a sleeveless peplum top and pair them with platform heels or wedges. If you're tall (like Uma Thurman) try a racer back tank top and flat, strappy sandals. Maybe top off with a straw hat or fedora? I'm neither petite nor extremely tall. Standing at five-foot-six and a half (yes, that half is very important!) I kept the jeans cuffed, and opted for sheer accents in wearing a torso grazing camisole and cropped, nude blazer. The accessories ranging from a party perfect turquoise clutch and a coral cuff, helped pop against the distressed blue denim and nude basics. The shoes, towering - yet easy to walk in - offer some extra splashes of color; in a subtle manner.

WHY I LOVE THIS OUTFIT... Boyfriend Jeans are all the rage right now. I can understand why. They are not only already "broken in" as far as distressing goes, but the fit is comfortable as well. Since the cut of a boyfriend jean tends to run a bit on the baggier side, stick to form fitting tops and cropped jackets. This will both complement and balance out the overall silhouette of your finished look. And, to help keep things from becoming too "tomboy" mix in a sweet candy coated pair of heels.

When playing with bold prints, I usually stick with one. I will mix prints on occasion, however, for this ensemble I stuck with one, single safari inspired piece. I worked around the print by keeping everything else I wore with it, completely neutral. Including my nails. White nail polish is white hot for the Summer. It's classic and goes with everything. Nail polish is one of my favorite accessories. Affordable, and can easily amp up your look. I used to wear a different color on my finger nails from what was on my toes. Now, I like to match all my nails with one hue. If the clouds were to close in and create a chill in the air, a camel colored boyfriend cardigan would easily tie in to my look. Just roll up the sleeves and leave it open. No buttoning necessary. Layering 101. Making fashion fun!
WHY I LOVE THIS OUTFIT... This outfit was very much so Safari inspired. With Summer just around the corner, and the heat waves beginning to climb, shorts are certainly a much needed essential for our wardrobes. Why not select one that can double for dressy as well? This pair is perfect for just that. Wear them with a blazer and heels and you can attend a dinner party. Or, like me, pair them with a camisole and sandals for a Picnic in the park.

Where Are They Now? Catching Up With Some Of Our Favorite Reality TV Stars
Can you still remember when you watched the very first season finale of "The Bachelor" and cheered (or booed!) as Alex Michel gave that final rose to Amanda Marsh? Or do you recall when Kelly Clarkson became the very first winner of "American Idol" and she sang what would become her first hit single "A Moment Like This"? It is so hard to believe that it has been more than a decade since some of our favorite shows first aired and are still running! As season after season of shows like "The Bachelor," "American Idol," "Project Runway" and others air, it is easy to forget about those trailblazers who started it all. Some of them went on to fame and fortune, but others became forgotten names. Here's what some of our favorite reality television and stars are up to now: Written By Heather Green

Paige Davis from TLC's "Trading Spaces" The perky host of TLC's "Trading Spaces" was fired after four seasons with| the show. In 2005, TLC dropped Davis because they said they wanted to go to a "host-less" format. There was speculation that the firing had more to do with a run of scandal that Davis was associated with, including rumors of an alleged sex tape and an appearance on the cover of TV Guide wearing nothing but some wallpaper. A few years later, Davis was invited back as one of several hosts, but it was the last season for the show. Davis has appeared on other shows, including as a guest judge for The Food Network's "Iron Chef America" and as a contestant on "Gameshow Marathon." She went on to host new segments on "The Best of Trading Spaces" and she is now a host of the home improvement show "Home Made Simple."
The First "Bachelor" Winner In 2002, Alex Michel became the first "Bachelor" and we watched in fascination as 25 women simultaneously vied for his affections on national TV. Ultimately, it would be Amanda Marsh who received the final rose instead of runner-up Trista Rehn (who would later become the first "Bachelorette"). Michel's choice shocked fans, who assumed that Rehn would be his final pick. The romance lasted only a couple of months. Marsh allegedly dumped Michel after learning that he was still keeping up a relationship with Rehn through phone calls and letters. Marsh went on to marry her childhood friend and had a daughter with him. She worked as a radio host briefly before settling down as a registered nurse. Michael continues to work in business and is an executive at a media and technology company.

The First "Bachelorette" Winner After fans were shocked that she didn't win the first "Bachelor," Trista Rehn went on to become the first "Bachelorette." The second time was a charm for Rehn, who gave her final rose to firefighter Ryan Sutter. The two became only one of two couples (so far) from the "Bachelor" or the "Bachelorette" to get married, "Bachelorette" Ashley Hebert married her final pick, as well. "Bachelor" Jason Mesnick married a show contestant, but his wife was not the woman to whom he gave his final rose. He married the woman who was a runnerup, changing his mind only after the show was over. The first "Bachelorette" winner, Ryan Sutter, is still married to Trista Rehn (now Trista Sutter) and the couple live in Colorado and have two children. Ryan is still a firefighter and while Trista

gives the occasional interview, she is a full-time stay-at-home mom. He has appeared on multiple television shows with her, including a filming of their wedding.
The First Winner of "America's Next Top Model" In 10 years, "America's Next Top Model" has been through 20 cycles with the 20th set to air this summer) but has failed to produce any actual “top models”. Adrianne Curry beat out good girl Shannon Stewart to become the first winner of "America's Next Top Model." After winning the show, Curry was signed to Wilhelmina Models and appeared in several magazines, including Stuff, People, Maxim and more. She participated in a few runway shows and became the spokesmodel for The Flex Belt with

The First "American Idol" Winner Of any of the "Where are they now?" contestants, the first "American Idol" winner has become the most successful and the most well-known. Kelly Clarkson broke out of the gates with the single "A Moment Like This," which broke records for making the biggest jump to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Clarkson has gone on to sell millions of records around the world and to win three Grammy Awards, three MTV Video Music Awards, 12 Billboard Music Awards, four American Music Awards and a Women's World Award.
The First "Project Runway" Winner Jay McCarroll was the first fashion designer to win "Project Runway," which has been on for 11 seasons and spawned several spin-offs. McCarroll won $100,000 and a mentorship from Banana Republic, but he turned down the award because he didn't want to give up a 10 percent stake of his income for life. Instead, McCarroll focused on his own ventures, including a blog and designer fashion boutique called The Colony. McCarroll has become a designer for Field of View winter guard, has a fashion line on QVC and teaches at Philadelphia University. He also appeared on reality TV again, going on to win Celebrity Fit Club on VH1. TS

ask anna Hi Anna, I'm finally ready to tackle some of the deeper wrinkles...Would you recommend Botox, or is there something else that I should consider? —Joyce Hi Joyce, There are various options for treating wrinkles it really just depends on how “aggressive you” would like to be as well as how deep the wrinkles actually are in addition to the area(s) needing to be treated. Botox is typically indicated for the upper area of the face such as the crow’s feet, in between the eye brows as well as the forehead. Often time wrinkles located from the check bones and below are accompanied by loss of facial volume and filler such as Juvederm is necessary. Various lasers perform skin tightening options however, you will need several treatments and it takes several months to see the true effects, as this procedure is causing your own Collagen to re-stimulate. There are also other laser treatments for resurfacing which help to improve the overall tone and texture; lasers that perform MicroLaser Peels and or ProFractional (which can also be done lighter all over the skin and deeper in targeted areas such as around the lips or eyes). • Strength Training: While many women may fear strength training because they think it will make them bulk up, this fear is unfounded. Strength training will help you to tone your body, not bulk up, and it will help you burn more fat, even when your body is at rest.
• Circuits: Combining strength training with highintensity cardio is one of the best ways to burn fat fast. You'll build healthy muscle tissue and get your heart rate pumping at optimal speed to help you burn fat.

"The smaller coverage and v-type shape gives the illusion that the bottom is smaller -- the more coverage on the bottom, the bigger your bottom may look," she said. "On the other hand, fuller coverage bottoms like boy shorts are great for a flat butt as it gives the illusion it's bigger."
For women with large busts: Vaughn recommends a halter top style for support. She said that current trends such as the ruffle or fringe-style top look great on all types.

You never want your bottom to be too big. In 1989, after graduating from business school in the South of France, I decided to create my own brand with a colorful and Mediterranean character influenced by my native city, Marseille. MUSICAL INTERLUDES The Midtown Beach Music series has grown to become a favorite Thursday evening activity on the Commons at North Hills in Raleigh. Featuring famous beach bands, this sixth season runs April through August with hit makers like The Embers, Liquid Pleasure, and The Band of Oz. Crabtree Valley Mall hosts Music in the Valley on their upper level Patio. Events run Wednesday evenings in April through June and then again in September and October and feature acts like the Al Williams Band, Suicide Blonde, and Steel Water. Raleigh’s North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) amphitheater plays host to a summer-long festival of some of America’s finest performers like Los Lobos, Indigo Girls, Bruce Hornsby, and Tift Merritt. They’ll occasionally combine a live performance with an outdoor movie screening in the Museum Park Theater.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THREAD COUNT? When it comes to long lasting quality sheets, it’s not the thread count that really counts! What you really should be looking for in a soft, durable and well made sheet is the quality of the cotton, itself. If you were to compare a 400 thread count department store sheet with a 200 thread count one of ours, at first they might seem similar, however you would quickly see that thread count alone does not determine the quality. Our linens are made with the longest staple combed cotton in the world coupled with a precise finishing process, which make them feel and fit and last much longer. If you are looking for a true quality sheet, expect to pay about a $1 per thread, for example $600 for a true 600 count. If you are spending less money, you are probably not getting the thread count that you’re paying for. Also, look for important details like double sewn seams and shower cap construction with elastic that runs all the way around on the fitted sheets, not just in the corners. DO YOU NEED TO USE FABRIC SOFTENER FOR SOFT SHEETS? Absolutely not! Because of the long staple cotton that we use, our sheets do get softer over time. We do not recommend the use of fabric softeners, which simply coat the fibers. We suggest that you wash your fine linens in gentle detergents. Do not use bleach, which really breaks down the fibers. We offer a line of LeBlanc Linen Wash that will extend the life of your sheets. WILL ANY BATH SOAP DO? We think you’ll love our fine french milled soaps! They’re baked six times and last two to three months in the shower. Our soaps are all natural and made with essential oils that are so much better for your skin than ordinary bath soap. We have a nice selection of scented soaps from France and Italy.

While we have been to many, some items are in our store because people know what it is we are trying to do - help people who handcraft beautiful things to support themselves and their families by doing so. We have bracelets from Colombia (South America) because a native of that country who now lives in Durham came to us. She works with people in the village of Tuchin who make bracelets from palm leaves. These people are very isolated as the area they in is so dangerous that they do not leave their village. These are the kind of people that it thrills us to help. WILL PEOPLE BUY ITEMS JUST BECAUSE THEY COME FROM ANOTHER COUNTRY? No. We have learned the painful lesson that someone will buy an item while in another country that he/she will not buy in Raleigh. This is especially true for women's accessory items. For example, while one might purchase a pair of earrings made of dried orange slices in Rio de Janiero, the same person would not buy that same pair of earrings locally.

(Though tea definitely does seem to be much more popular lately!) WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH THE HATS? Dressing for a tea party can be fun for both adults and children. An afternoon tea gives the ladies an opportunity to break out a beautiful yet casual and comfortable dress, wear pearls, don white gloves, and of course, show off a glamorous hat! The hat seems to be an essential part of any fun tea party, and while I don't provide the hats, oftentimes the guests already own hats themselves, or will purchase a hat and further decorate it with ribbons and bows. Children can do the same, and of course dressing up for tea makes them feel like little princesses.

LOOSE LEAF TEA VS. BAGGED TEA: WHICH IS BETTER? While the quality of the tea is definitely an important factor, one of the main differences is the size of the tea leaves. Bagged tea usually contains broken, tiny pieces of tea leaves. Breaking up tea leaves causes some of the chemicals and essential oils to dissipate, and so a bagged tea often will not be as flavorful as loose leaf tea made up of large, unbroken leaves. Additionally, water circulation around the tea can be inhibited, and the bag can also prevent natural expansion of the tea leaves, which also affects the overall flavor. TS

Christina Bowen, an avid seamstress, owns Alterations By Christina, a “mom and pop” tailor shop in Raleigh. She studied Fashion Design at Meredith College, and after having years of experience working for dry cleaners and tailor shops in the Triangle area, she is thrilled to run her own store. Triangle Style Magazine recently interviewed her and asked questions about what to expect at her store and what types of repairs she offers her clients. What do you believe are the common misconceptions that most people have about alterations? A repair is going to look like a repair. Sometimes more than one fitting is required in order to get a compatible fit; it does not mean that we did something wrong. Precision fitting takes talent, and only experienced tailors can do that.

Pant hems are definitely number one, and waist alterations are second. When bringing something in for alterations, is there anything a customer should do beforehand? I would recommend bringing in the lowest heel shoe for a pant hem. I would also suggest bringing in undergarments you are planning to wear under your formal and semi-formal wear. (Bras greatly affect the fit.)

Stretchy fabric can be pulled together, but non-stretchy fabric will need a patch of fabric behind it.

What is your average turnaround time for clients? Normally, it takes 3-6 business days, but for simple repairs, it takes 2 days.
Which is more challenging: taking in or letting out? Letting out is most challenging because it is an estimate, and it is even more challenging if you have to add fabric.
When shopping for clothes, is there a trick for finding the right fit? Find a brand that fits your body type. But if you don't have an average body, a talented tailor is a necessity.

Twenty year old Ashley Crisp, of Chocowinity has chronic myeloid leukemia. This past March Bailey’s Fine Jewelry teamed up with the MakeA-Wish foundation of Eastern North Carolina to grant her wish for a shopping spree. “We are so blessed to be involved with granting Ashley’s wish,” said Clyde Bailey, president of Bailey’s Fine Jewelry. “While a piece of jewelry may seem like such a small thing, we’ve seen the joy it can bring to people and it was great to see that with Ashley.” The Bailey’s limo picked Ashley and two friends up at Ashley’s home in Chocowinity at 10 a.m. At about noon they arrived in Raleigh, where Bailey’s and Crabtree treated Ashley to lunch at Kanki. After lunch, Ashley began her shopping spree at Bailey’s where Bill Rich, general manager, and Dana Stephenson, sales support manager, were ready to help Ashley shop TO FIND with a $500 gift card from Bailey’s. Best of all, this dish is super easy and you won’t need to dirty a mixing bowl. 2 pounds chicken boneless skinless, about 10 small thighs ¼ cup balsamic vinegar ¼ cup olive oil 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 cloves garlic, minced Few grinds of pepper, to taste ¼ teaspoon salt In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the balsamic vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, garlic and pepper and mix to combine. Add the chicken thighs and turn to coat. Marinate in the refrigerator for up to 12 hours. Add the salt right before grilling. Lightly brush the grill with oil and heat to mediumhigh. “What are you going to write about this month?” she said. “I am having a hard time coming up with anything yet.” She hesitated and gave me a significant look. “What about communication?” Hmmm.... She may have had something there, especially as I had been having problems with my email and my cellphone was turned to silent when she called. (I had forgotten to turn it back up after the alarm went off.) Sometimes I forget that today’s accepted form of communication almost requires reaching for my computer before I put my feet over the edge of my bed and put on a pot of coffee. For I’m old enough to remember those good ole days before email, cellphones, even answering machines, and the whole host of other handy communication devices were around. People had to catch you on the run, send a telegram, or drop you a line by mail. Obviously this was not a good thing in lots of situations. Nonetheless today we have moved into the world of instant everything. I am not so sure that’s a good thing either. But I’ve grown used to it. So much more so than I had realized. For when my carrier had some sort of “glitch” for hours a few weeks back, I felt bereft, as if I were stranded in a cave on a desert island. What could I do? How could I get in touch with my children? How would I pay my bills? There was the telephone I suppose but my landline went the way of the obsolete not so long ago. Perhaps it’s better to have one after all. So what is the protocol for answering email? I told my friend I had given this great thought and decided to check mine from now on once a day. She said, “I check mine twice a day.” No matter what those in the know say, meeting expectations has a lot of merit when keeping up with friendships. 76 | triangle style
My favorite communication device is skype. To see my triplet grandchildren take their first steps, or watch a granddaughter dance, and another play the piano is a constant miracle to me. Facebook keeps me up on my extended family, though it was a bit tricky when we found ourselves on different sides of the political landscape. As much as I have become a fan of these technical methods of communication, there are some drawbacks. For one thing, I resent all those good-intentioned group emails that pop up in my inbox. Do you realize how many you can get in one day? Plus, I wish I didn’t have to scroll down tons of messages advertising this and that, just to get to a real live comment of a friend. How do I eliminate a person’s likes and still keep the person I like? I can just scroll past them, of course, but I feel guilty if I don’t click like. As wonderful as Skype and email, let alone texting can be, they can leave me feeling alone, counting the number of people who have responded to my last entry on facebook. Nowadays, if I see a real live face in the driveup window of the bank, I feel she is my friend. She smiles at me. She tells me to have a nice day. I tell her back. It’s a good feeling. That’s why I am letting the technology slip this afternoon. I am making reservations to do some “face time” in person, to see my granddaughter graduate from middle school. Am I going to get in the car and drive to that old-fashioned thing called a travel agency? No, I am going to my computer and log on to Expedia.com.

What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, starring
reformatted, this Roberto Rossellini 1954 classic stars Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders. The film is about a well-off couple who have been married for eight years but have spent very little of that time alone with each other. Now off on a road trip to Italy to sell a villa an uncle has left them, they come face to face with reality. Simply stated, they really don’t like each other much. There is however a hint of mutual attraction. Unfortunately it quickly wanes , thus they agree to go off on their own. She tours Pompei and he hangs out with new friends on Capri. Even so, you can see snippets of caring in between their carping and snide comments.
Johnny Depp and Leonardo DiCaprio, is a sentimental and many-layered film filled with moments of comedy. Gilbert is one of those good guys who stays around out of loyalty. His father left. He says he never will. A grocery clerk in a Mom and Pop store, Gilbert’s paycheck takes care of his family. His mother, so obese she can’t leave the couch, his childlike brother, his sarcastic younger sister, even his older sister -- all four of them depend on Gilbert Grape. Gilbert has a hard time saying no, not even to the neurotic woman who wants him to bring by her groceries and then corners him before her husband comes home. It is a wonderful film, Leonardo DiCaprio is brilliant, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
The Women on the 6th Floor is a tenderhearted comedy about mild-mannered Monsieur Joubert who owns both an investment firm and a large house in Paris that have been in his family for generations. Monsieur Joubert believes in the value of tradition. When it comes to his breakfast, however, Joubert makes an exception: he wants his daily egg to be boiled for exactly 3 and 1/2 minutes. His maid, also inherited from his family, couldn’t care less about such things. After more than ten years of putting up with her, his wife hires Maria, a young Spanish girl who is a marvel -- competent and polite. She can even boil an egg properly. Maria lives on the 6th floor with five other women who also work as maids and have emigrated from Spain. Even though Joubert owns the entire house, he has never been to the 6th floor. When he does make a visit one day, Maria introduces him to her roommates. He finds them intriguing: lively, spontaneous, and devout. They, as well as Maria, open his eyes to a more carefree way of life, one he likes better than the one he has always had.

The 39 Steps (the Masterpiece Classic rendition of John Buchan’s novel) is a gripping romantic thriller. The main character is Robert Hannay, a British intelligence officer newly home from Africa. Standing in the middle of his living room is a neighbor who has broken into his apartment. Apparently the man is some sort of freelance spy and is on the run. Before he is killed by the people following him, he gives Hannay a notebook that contains a secret code. He says it is vital to get the notebook to the Inspector General in Scotland, for the code contains a German Intelligence Network plot to invade England. Hannay agrees. He really has no choice. The police think he is a murderer and the German spies know where he is headed. They chase him on foot, by car, and even by plane. They want that notebook.
