Q: Tell us a little bit about your company and what motivated you and your wife to start your own business.

Mike Mayer wis99 and wife, Kate

A: Meliora Cleaning Products manufactures people and planet-friendly home cleaning and laundry products. Kate (my then-girlfriend and now wife) founded the company in the spring of 2013 while finishing her Masters in Environmental Engineering at Illinois Institute of Technology (Armour). She realized there was a need for transparency and better ingredients in the cleaning products we bring into our homes, as there were no requirement to list the ingredients for any home cleaning products. Backed by her technical expertise and a desire to use business as a tool to solve problems, she started making laundry products in our home. A couple of months later, she asked me to join her. We’ve been making everything in Chicago, IL ever since.

From the start, that transparency and openness in what ingredients we use – and how we run our business have been our foundation. We’re a Certified B Corporation, which means we have a triple-bottom-line to business that includes our impact on people and the planet, in addition to running a profitable, successful business. We’re both nerdy, curious engineers with manufacturing experience, so it’s also really fun to get our hands dirty making products that help people and are working to bring about some change in our industry.

Q: What advice would you give to those considering starting their own business?

A: 1. Find other entrepreneurs, especially those that are doing something close to what you’re doing. There is a big ‘pay it back’ sentiment among the small business community.

Most entrepreneurs are happy to answer questions about lessons they learned the hard way. Even if you’re early on in your journey, there is always something we learn when helping a newer business sort out a problem.

2. Remember the Code of Ethics. If you thought living within your means was important at home, imagine running a business. You will have to roll up your sleeves and do some very menial work. Smile as you do it, your employees are watching. And there are no shortcuts. Put the hours in and you’ll be rewarded for your hard work.

Q: What have been the biggest road blocks in starting this business?

A: As a bootstrap start-up, it can be tough to compete with the advertising power some of these multi-nationals have. We’ve stayed lean, leveraging our technical expertise, to help us grow smart and fast. We stay focused on being transparent and making great products as consistently as we can. People have really connected with our message. We respect them and won’t [mislead] them to make a sale.

Q: What has it been like being business partners with your life partner?

A: Meliora’s on year 5 and our marriage is on year 4. I respect the hell out of her and this company she started from scratch. If you thought truthful, open communication was important at work or at home before, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Plus, the successes are twice as sweet. We both know how much it took to pull them off.

Q: What is the future? Where do you see yourself in the next 5 to 10 years?

A: We want to help lead the way to full disclosure in our industry. More people are asking questions, and we aim to be a resource for not only our products, but also as a resource to help navigate a new area many people never thought about before.

I

t seems that as I get older, time moves faster. I remember an alumnus telling me this back in my days as an active member and thinking that time couldn’t move fast enough. I remember wanting time to speed up and be done with class and onto the next thing. Now, I think all the time that I wish time moved a bit slower. I wish there was more time to review, more time to learn, and more time to plan. Unfortunately, there is never enough time.

This school year has already come and gone. My first year as your National President went with a blink of an eye, and another year is on the horizon. Triangle in many ways has had a good year. We formally welcomed back our Iowa State Chapter and celebrated our Rose Tech Chapter’s 50th anniversary. We continued our support of new groups at Washington, Nebraska, and Arizona State, while planning for more formal expansions in the coming year. We invested heavily in creating new resources to support growth including chapter programming, recruitment coaches and our newest staff member, Augie Farwig. We also saw Drew Hopson, our Director of Alumni Engagement, meet with numerous alumni and chapters to establish a plan for helping more of our alumni members engage with the fraternity.

While all of this was ongoing, many in the Greek community continued to see new risk management issues. In the past, our thinking related to risk management was how to combat alcohol abuse and hazing. Unfortunately, our thinking has had to evolve and broaden. We continue to expand our risk management efforts by educating our members on: • • • • • •

Mental health and wellness The responsible use of alcohol Effects of substance abuse (i.e. alcohol and drugs) Sexual misconduct and consent Hazing prevention and intervention Bystander intervention

While Triangle tends to see less risk management issues than our peers, we are not immune. In the past year, we have seen these issues in one form or another.

We are uniquely positioned as the fraternity of Engineers, Scientists, and Architects to solve problems. We must provide leadership in our chapters, campuses, and communities. We must think creatively about what is critical to the Triangle experience. We will continue to invest in having our alumni members and staff trained to facilitate and deploy the Fraternal Health & Safety Initiative educational programming to our members. We will continue to sponsor HazingPrevention.Org and empower our brothers to combat hazing in every form.

We’re looking for articles!

Have an idea for an article and want to submit it? We accept a variety of submissions, ranging from alumni and chapter updates to descriptions of events and highlights of successes.

We have joined with the North-American Interfraternity Conference to enact new health and safety standards including a Good Samaritan policy for individuals and organizations who seek help for those in need. We have continued to recognize the sources of risk in our chapters and reward those that make choices to combat those risks.

Time does fly. A year later and the Fraternity has made progress and has faced challenges. We will likely do so again in the coming year. As we face those challenges, we must do so by hearing many voices. In the next year, we will conduct a comprehensive poll of our active membership to better understand their background, story, and challenges. We will look to hear their thoughts on combating risk in today’s college environment. The National Council has also created a new program which pairs chapters to individual councilmen to provide a direct conduit between fraternity leadership and our active members. As this program grows, we hope each chapter will have a one-on-one relationship with a brother from National Council.

For some of you reading this, you can attest that time moves fast. In the next year we must work to grow our brotherhood. We must also make Triangle synonymous with a safe, fun, and rewarding collegiate experience. We can do these things, but we need everyone involved. Each of us has a part in creating the Triangle of tomorrow. Seize the day. Use your most precious resources to continue making a better world.

LE T TER FROM THE EDITOR t’s been two years since I took on the role of your magazine editor. It has definitely been a new professional challenge, but it has been great to learn more about your stories and to share them with the Triangle world and beyond. I believe the stories we are telling are important not just today, but for years to come. Personally, I believe this edition might be the most important yet.

The last couple of years have been hard on Fraternity. Type the word in Google and see what comes up. It’s not pretty. Yet, as an organization, we haven’t talked too much about it. The time has come.

Don’t get me wrong, I care deeply for this organization. Working here has been a breath of fresh air. As a campus-based professional, I was dealing with risk management issues every day. I’ve closed chapters for hazing the likes of which you would only see in movies, was in the hospital with students more times than I care to count, and have seen one too many students deal with drug addictions. I can’t say I have seen any of those things during my time with Triangle.

But that doesn’t mean the issues don’t exist.

As I was sitting at our Leadership & Training Weekend this past January during a discussion about risk management, our active members were barely paying attention, and even talking about how the issues don’t pertain to them. That same weekend, alcohol was brought into the camp, and a chapter sent two people to the hospital from an open party.

I don’t bring this up to call any chapter out. I say this because while we may not make the news headlines, or while we may not see the severity COMMITMENT of issues that some of our fraternal partners see, these are our issues too.

VALUES These are our issues because we are part of the fraternal community.

SOCIAL STRENGTH These are our issues because I have had conversations with our chapter CHARACTER FUN leaders and I know that our chapter members struggle with mental health issues, drug issues, and alcohol addiction. These are our issues because some of our members would rather have big parties than follow the rules to keep our guests safe.

So whether our issues are big or small, the time to fix them is now.

We will be talking about risk management a lot this year. That is why this edition is featuring the new health & safety standards created by the North-American Interfraternity Conference. Starting at our summer leadership school we will be discussing how we can commit to doing a better job at taking care of ourselves and our brothers by way of our values and Ritual. As we enter into the fall, we will be offering risk management certification courses via our new online learning platform. In September, our certified chapter advisors and members of staff will be traveling around the country facilitating our FHSI Hazing Prevention program to chapters, and in January we will be offering a second FHSI training to any selected alumni.

Risk is inevitable. That’s why we call it risk management. Whether you are 18 or 58. In college, or working at a law firm. You are faced with different scenarios, challenges, and values that will test you. It’s why I designed the cover that I did. Your brain is hardwired with so many different thoughts, beliefs, and values. Most of which you came to college with, some of which you are developing from your fraternal experience.

It is up to our members to choose which wire leads their decision-making. And will it be one that keeps them and their brothers safe?

You will never be able to avoid every risk, but we hope that with these resources and newly implemented standards you will be better prepared to manage it.

The Triangle experience was created to help build better men. However, you have to allow it to do so by following its policies, code of ethics, values, and Ritual. Allow this change to be good. One that not only helps you be a better brother, but a better engineer, a better scientist, a better architect, a better professional, a better husband, a better father, a better man. This change may be just what the fraternal movement needs to keep us around for another 100+ years.

CHAPTER ASSESSMENT UPDATES NOW WITH THE SECOND YEAR under its belt, the Pyramid Accreditation Program and Judy & Larry Garatoni Building Better Men Chapter Endowment Program has helped several chapters to reach their short-term goals and create a plan to set them up for long-term success.

To ensure that our chapters and colonies complement the mission of Triangle, develop leadership and character in its members, provide service to the community, foster lifelong friendships, and provide a safe and healthy experience, a set of standards was developed. These standards are: - Academics: shown through a commitment to academic success through high academic standards and continuous improvement - Leadership: shown through a high involvement in both on and off-campus organizations - Diligence: shown through a commitment to marketing the strengths of Triangle to ensure chapter growth and retention - Character: exhibited by the behavior of active and new members through education and support around current issues and trends facing fraternity members and college students

Chapters are assessed in two ways. The first is through a self-assessment that they are directed to via triangle.org. This allows chapter leadership to go through each standard and criterion and determine their strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for growth. The second is via a chapter consultant visit from a member of the National Headquarters. There, the staff member will work with the executive board and individual chapter leaders to determine which tier the chapter falls under for each standard.

Scoring is broken into four categories, or “tiers”. The red tier signifies that a chapter has met minimum expectations and has received a score between 1 and 25%.

Next is the yellow tier which means chapters are meeting general expectations and have scored between 26-50%. Chapters who are in the green tier are exceeding expectations and have scored between a 51-75%. Finally the blue tier denotes exceptional chapter operations. Chapters must score a 76-100% in their assessment to reach this tier.

More important than the scores, though, is the feedback and suggestions for improvement that each chapter receives post-visit. This is developed inconcert with the visiting staff member and is crafted to help chapter leadership as they set goals for moving forward. Additionally, chapters can use this feedback to improve their scores before National Awards and Building Better Men submissions, where award winners are announced in July.

We are happy to announce a 8% increase in chapter’s averages this year and are happy to share the rankings below. For a more detailed breakdown of Pyramid scoring, be sure to check the website prior to fall 2018.

PROMOTE THE WELFARE OF YOUR PROFESSION

I

f you have your Review delivered to your home, you probably also received mail or email regarding the 2018 Triangle Alumni Directory project we started back in January.

That project has been very successful, finding many alumni who had fallen off our radar because of changed addresses, phones, or emails, and updating contact and professional information on thousands more. For those who participated in the updates – Thank You!

Why Now? Elsewhere in this REVIEW, you’re going to read about a new Health and Safety Initiative proposed as a vehicle to help realign fraternity communities with college standards. Its goal is to make campus communities safer for our members and guests. Since the last two years have been difficult for the fraternity community, this initiative is a good start as we work to regain the confidence and support of our publics.

The updated directory will provide alumni better contact information for classmates and colleagues, but also will become an important resource for our active members and the recruitment of new members, through a program called Career Contact. As Triangle reinforces its partnerships with colleges and forges stronger relationships with faculty and parents, this kind of resource is a valuable addition to our toolkit!

Triangle’s Career Contact program complements the Health & Safety Initiatve with a stronger focus on professional preparation. Most current active members tell us they would not have been in a fraternity had they not found Triangle. They weren’t looking for the social aspects as much as a support structure to help them achieve academically and prepare themselves properly for life after graduation.

Participation in the Career Contact program is a little more than agreeing to take a phone call or respond to an email from an active member who wants to learn more about the work you do and/ or how you built your professional career. Just let us know you want to sign up and we will tag your member record and add you to the program.

Students will be able to search for a contact by profession, company and region and can contact you via phone or email.

If that attitude reflects current actives, it also should guide our programs to attract and interest good men in the future.

This kind of connection can help a young member searching for direction or understanding as they work through their degree program. It can keep men focused and on track toward graduation or help them ask and answer questions that might allow them to consider another direction. Either way, it’s a vehicle to connect alumni and active members to share and learn from one another.

Should you work for a company that offers internships or co-ops, we’d like to know that as well. We want to build a directory of these opportunities for students and to encourage actives to apply. All things being equal, wouldn’t you prefer to have a Triangle brother working with you? With more real-world experience, our members will be more competitive in the job market.

We hope all alumni will consider signing up as a Career Contact. It doesn’t mean you’ll get a call every month, just that you’ll be added to the roster of alumni our students will be able to search if they choose. If they do take advantage of this service, won’t it be fantastic for them to see thousands of alumni offering to take their call or email? What a great statement that makes on Triangle’s commitment to promote the welfare of [their] profession!

UPDATES FROM THE ROAD

T

here are many elements to fraternity recruitment but through the conversations I have had with our actives, it’s apparent that too many of our groups are getting caught up in stagnant recruitment and are not engaging alumni in their recruitment efforts.

Stagnant recruitment is when we make a rush schedule, arrange some events and then hope potential new members show up. It’s setting up a table in a room full of other fraternity tables, hoping the men who are in the right major will find us. Ultimately, stagnant recruitment is not effective recruitment.

So what strategy should we be implementing? Our Oklahoma Chapter is a great example. They entered last fall with 20 members. After taking a much more hands-on approach, the chapter grew to 30 members. How did they do it?

When I asked the executive board, they told me it was easy. Instead of just planning a week of rush events and hoping people showed up, the chapter went out on campus and began meeting people and developing relationships with potential new members.

One example of how the chapter got their name out there in a fun way was through their “Joe Eats Pizza” event. The event was exactly what it sounded like.

People would come by and donate money to watch Joe eat pizza. They then got a sticker that said, “I watched Joe eat pizza.”

The simplicity of this event goes to show that we don’t have to spend the time and resources to put on huge events to connect with others and start relationships. We can do something as simple as eating pizza in the quad. So, kudos to Oklahoma.

One of the most beneficial resources to chapter recruitment are alumni, which is why we have a program set up specifically for alumni to volunteer as chapter recruitment coaches. Implemented in January, five alumni coaches have been trained and have been working with 10 of our chapters. These coaches work hard to help chapters implement an effective relationship-based

recruitment process. We have already seen growth at many of our participating chapters and are ready to expand the program to more.

Recruitment coach Graham Ashby pur10 says, “It’s refreshing to be involved as an alumnus where I can donate knowledge and experience to undergraduate chapters.” Brendan McIntyre osu10 adds, “being able to connect with active members of an organization that was such a large part of the man I have become today is a truly rewarding experience that I am grateful for.” It’s obvious, the recruitment coaching program not only benefits our undergraduate chapters but provides alumni the chance to give back to Triangle.

There are other ways that alumni can be incorporated into the recruitment process. One example is an alumni night during rush week. Scheduling this night allows potential new members to network with alumni, see the successes of graduated members, and understand how Triangle can be a stepping stone to career success. It’s also a great way to allow local alumni to connect with their chapters and model lifetime membership. This is just one example and we encourage active chapters and local alumni to brainstorm other ways alumni can be included in the chapter’s recruitment efforts.

I can’t wait to get back on the road this fall to connect with more actives, alumni, and potential Triangles! Remember that recruitment for the fall starts now! Have a plan and go execute it! Good luck this summer and let’s have a great fall recruitment!

UPDATES FROM THE ROAD

I

t is hard to believe that as I write this I am nearing my one-year anniversary with Triangle Fraternity. I am forever thankful for the staff, actives, and alumni that the Fraternity has brought into my life, many of whom I am honored to call my friend. I am also thankful for the opportunity to have traveled across the country, witnessing firsthand how Triangle is making a difference on its campuses, and within the lives of its members. The meaningful and significant work by our chapters and alumni groups is inspiring. I want to share with you the stories of two distinctly different groups.

I want to first highlight Triangle’s Rose Tech Chapter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, a group that now sits at 81 active members. The chapter celebrated its 50th anniversary in early May, a massive event which saw nearly 250 attendees, including a significant number of the charter members. The great attendance, beautiful dinner, and plentiful Triangle paraphernalia were nevertheless outshone by the sharing of Triangle memories. Everything Triangle provides to us – personal development, love, and brotherhood, to name a few – were on full display.

Rose Tech’s first advisor, Dr. Harold Sabbagh pur55, spoke to the origin of the Rose Tech chapter, while its current advisor, Dr. Cary Laxer rose88, spoke to how Rose Tech achieved the success it has today. A particularly moving part of the celebration was past National President and charter member Randy Drew rose67 being recognized with the Custodian of the Fraternity Spirit Award, a surprise from Rose Tech to acknowledge Randy’s significant breadth of service to Triangle Fraternity. Dr. Laxer and Toby Kraft rose68 were also recognized by the National Council with the Outstanding Advisor Award and Outstanding Alumnus Award, respectively. The planning committee did a remarkable job of showcasing the chapter’s rich and storied history.

Later in May, I had the opportunity to visit a group that is in a situation now that Rose Tech’s founders might remember. Ever since I joined the staff at Triangle, I have heard excited

whispers about this faraway group of young men who came to Triangle on their own, who were growing rapidly, and who were doing good work on their campus.

These men, who form what is soon to be Triangle Fraternity’s newest colony at the University of Washington, more than lived up to the hype. Their story is incredible, and it’s still being written.

The interest group at UW owes much of its foundational success to four people, starting with Jared Osterli, and later Matt Jones, who not only saw Triangle as a way of creating a community for men studying engineering and other STEM majors, but who both shepherded the fledgling group. That isn’t to say they didn’t have help- Tom Speca pur05 and Samuel Karp ucla12 have been involved with the group from the days of one driving member, and truly embody the idea of lifelong membership and One Triangle.

The days of one sole member are long behind UW. Active president Nick Armstrong now leads a group of 21 men, and he has plans to keep growing.

With its alumni board now up to eight members, including founder Matt Jones, the chapter is preparing for Fall recruitment, and is even eyeing properties for a future chapter facility. The future is bright for the University of Washington interest group, and I’m excited to share their successes with you as they grow.

These two groups have much to be proud of, and to look forward to. If I could summarize my lessons from Rose and UW it would be that a clear vision, hard work, and dedicated, involved alumni are the steps that move us from good to great. These groups are not alone; Triangle has many successes to share from across the nation, and I regret that I cannot share them all within this one article. I encourage actives and alumni to submit their stories for future issues, to perhaps provide a torch for another chapter to pick up. To the friends Triangle has brought me, and to those it has yet to bring me, thank you for your contributions to the Fraternity over the past year. THE UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTH

LIKE SO MANY, as I read the horrific details about the events surrounding Timothy Piazza’s death, I found myself completely shaken. As a father, I struggle to imagine how Tim’s parents must feel, especially since their loss was senseless and preventable. As an alumnus of Beta Theta Pi, I’m embarrassed and angry.

In my role as the President and CEO of the North American Interfraternity Conference, people are asking me, “How do we fix Penn State’s fraternity culture?”

The reality is that substance abuse and hazing are not isolated to Penn State, and they are not isolated to fraternities. Research shows how many high school graduates come to college already having experience with both - meaning these problems are pervasive across thousands of high schools and hundreds of college campuses. Because so many people - fraternity men, parents, alumni and

campus administrators - know the value and benefits of a good fraternal experience and want to see it continue and evolve, they are coming to me with “we should” statements. Their motivation is right - we must do something. But we must also recognize that many of the industry’s best prevention practices substance-free housing, a live-in advisor, an anti-hazing policy, and strong educational programming were already in place for this chapter at Penn State.

Clearly parents, alumni, campus administrators and national fraternity organizations must continue to maintain strong expectations and provide education that fosters health and safety for all students. When it comes to accountability, we must respond with strong action to ensure unacceptable behavior isn’t tolerated.

Yet, the uncomfortable truth is that the inherent

limitation of our interventions is that they attempt to influence student behavior from a position of external power. Time and time again, we are humbled by the fact that our efforts are shallow unless students are committed to doing the right thing in the moment. While so many outstanding students do rise to the challenge of leadership, others fall short of their responsibility to effectively govern.

Therefore, we must pause to ask tough questions about the student experience before moving forward: How do students embrace meaningful and safe rites of passage instead of dangerous “traditions” which many seek no matter how many times we warn against them?

How do students keep substance abuse and

hazing out of their chapters when so many come to college having experienced these things in high school?

How do students craft positive experiences when they are so heavily influenced by popular media sources that glorify substance abuse and hazing?

How do students pay attention to their gut to do what is right in this case, call 911 rather than be overcome by desires to belong and avoid getting in trouble?

How do students work on long-term change initiatives that require hardiness and perseverance when they have grown up in a world of instant gratification?

As parents, alumni, campus administrators and national fraternity organizations, we must also ask difficult questions of ourselves: How do we work with students when their daily interactions are on technology platforms designed to disrupt traditional forms of authority and accountability?

How do we have authentic conversations with students about responsible drinking when so many see the legal drinking age as as a speed bump to their fun?

How do we approach students with firm expectations and accountability, while being humble and authentic about our own shortcomings?

How do we embrace increased levels of transparency, as sunlight is the best disinfectant?

How do we facilitate openness for students to seek help when they are constantly bombarded with declarations of zero tolerance with severe consequences?

Such deep reflection isn’t inaction - it’s an important step that lays the foundation for transformational change. Fraternal leaders have been asking questions like these as we work together to address critical issues facing fraternity men.

Our vision for fraternity communities, crafted by higher education and fraternal experts, provides a framework to prepare communities for change, foster humble, confident fraternity men, and address substance abuse. This blueprint is designed to meet students and campuses where they are, with the goal of bringing local stakeholders together to move their campus culture in the right direction. Our plan is to work with more than 20 campuses next year to implement these reforms, including Penn State, and more in the future.

At the core of fraternity is the notion that people united around a common purpose can do greater good together than on their own. This tragedy serves as a powerful call that we must redouble our commitment to work together to develop young men who are ready to lead their communities with empathy, respect, and integrity.

IMPLEMENTING MEDICAL GOOD SAMARITAN POLICIES Nothing should stand in the way of students calling 911 when they or anyone else needs help. A Good Samaritan Policy, which many universities also have in place, encourages students to call for emergency services when someone needs medical attention.

By September 1, 2018, each NIC member fraternity will adopt and implement a medical Good Samaritan policy.

RAISING THE BAR FOR HEALTH AND SAFETY PROGRAMMING Preventing alcohol abuse, hazing and sexual misconduct takes comprehensive efforts grounded in education. By establishing a more robust baseline, we can better ensure all fraternities are educating their chapters and members using best-practice programs around health and safety. By September 1, 2018, NIC member fraternities will implement annual baseline health and safety education programs for all chapters. This enhances previous NIC health and safety education standards already in place.

ADDRESSING ALCOHOL ABUSE Alcohol abuse is a serious public health problem on college campuses, and fraternities must provide greater leadership in this area. This is why fraternities came together to support a pilot program that empowers the NIC to work with campuses to achieve the following goals: - Remove dangerous hard alcohol from the fraternity experience.

- Provide a more balanced, academic-centered fraternity experience.

- Foster safer social events for members and guests.

This pilot approach blends policy rooted in research, best practices in educational programming, enhanced procedures to make events safer and a commitment to measure the efficacy of these interventions through consistent assessment.

Most critically, this approach also acknowledges that positive change happens when it’s embraced by all stakeholders at the local level through collaboration and customization.

We are all in this together, and I firmly believe that people united around a common purpose can do greater good together than on their own. We appreciate your continued partnership and look forward to working with you during the 2018-2019 school year and beyond.

Triangle Prepares for Next Level Learning

E-LEARNING IS HOT. For good reason. If done right, it can produce great results by decreasing costs and improving performance. This is exactly why Triangle leadership plans to turn its focus to its new learning management partner, Plaid, for the 2018-2019 academic year. While we are still committed to offering top-tier educational programming at our Herb Scobie Leadership School, Leadership & Training Weekend, and National Convention, our Online Learning will provide year-round educational opportunities to all members and alumni officers.

Online education has been taking off over the last five years, not just in fraternities, or in higher education, but in the corporate sector as well.

Research has shown that E-Learning can: - Increase productivity: because E-Learning is not bound by geography or time, we can control training’s impact on production by training people during down times. In addition, with the current economy, we’re asking people to do more with less. E-Learning is a great way to give our members the tools and skills needed to enhance their performance.

- Improve organization costs: while we won’t have an initial charge to access courses, we will be saving costs on staff travel for regional events and additional on-site leadership programming. (This can still be requested if interested.)

- Standardization: this guarantees that our members are getting the same program no matter what chapter they are in.

- Freedom to fail: let’s face it, real learning requires some failure. No one likes to fail in a classroom or at a national event in front of people.

E-Learning lets you fail without fear. This encourages exploration and testing of ideas. With the right feedback (which we will provide) our members will have a great learning environment.

- Improved retention: The combination of multimedia and instructional design can produce a very rich learning experience that is repeatable.

Throw in some good practice activities with feedback and you have a learning environment that’s hard to stay away from.

- Continued access to resources: with E-Learning you will have resources at the tips of your fingers at all times. Whether you go back through a refresher course or access our Online library you will be able to go back and brush up on what you have learned.

With all of these positives to look forward to, we can’t wait to get our online learning platform kicked off. We will begin our programming with risk management training for all actives, new members, and chapter advisors, and will continue with the Melissa & John Gargani Academic U program. It is our goal to begin offering new member education by Spring 2019, along with additional member development workshops and officer trainings. We will be sure to keep you posted throughout development as we may be in need of volunteer facilitators and program submissions!

Order Your Personalized Brick for Triangle Centennial Brotherhood Plaza Didn’t get to purchase a brick for the Centennial Brotherhood Plaza in 2007? Well, you’re in luck!

Personalized bricks are once again available to memorialize members, family and friends or pay tribute to a pledge class, chapter or special event.

These bricks are the focal point of the Plaza, built on the main entrance to the Fraternity Headquarters and a focal point for visitors and special celebrations. Funds raised pay for the bricks, but a portion of the cost will support the reserve fund that maintains the HQ and allows periodic improvements.

The standard brick is 4 x 8 inches and accommodates 2 lines per brick, 18 characters per line, including spacing and punctuation. For bricks purchased by individuals, the name will appear on the top line. The bottom lines will include the chapter and class year and/or personal message. The deluxe brick is 8 x 8 inches and has room for 4 lines of text with 18 characters per line. Additional lines carry a $2.00 surcharge per brick, per line.

Triangle Brother Gone Too Soon; Friends Seek Help for Family Fellow Triangle Brothers, It is with deep sadness that I announce the passing of Triangle brother Elias Friedman (Eli).

Eli was a member of the University of Connecticut (UCONN) Chapter of Triangle Fraternity.

Eli was a professional paramedic with Critical Care Paramedic Senior Care EMS in New York City. He also volunteered his Paramedic services for Hatzalah of the Upper Westside of Manhattan.

Tragically, less than a year after getting married and just four days after the birth of his daughter he died of a heart attack. Eli was only 48 years old. His unexpected death has left his young wife Rivka Friedman and their infant daughter Malyah Leah Friedman with little means of financial support.

In an effort to help Rivka and her daughter get through these hard times, the Connecticut Triangle Alumni Chapter are asking fellow brothers, and anyone else who would like to help out by sending funds to Rivka, to contact me: Kevin J. FIRST PHIL ANTHROPY UPDATE

Last year when we announced that Triangle had begun a new partnership with the FIRST Robotics organization, we were excited and knew we had a lot of work to do. Since then, we have come a long way. Today we have at least six chapters performing regular volunteer efforts. Triangle brothers have accumulated more than 200 hours of volunteer work with FIRST, and we look forward to seeing this number grow in the coming years.

We were able to maintain a presence at both FIRST World Championships this year in Houston and in Detroit with booths highlighting Triangle and its value to high school students as they transition to college in the coming years. Thanks to our brothers at the Houston and Michigan chapters, we were able to share with these students how Triangle shaped our college experiences while also promoting the Triangle scholarship which is available to high school seniors. Additionally, we were able to help sponsor the FIRST teams that we met with at our National Convention in Arizona and the FIRST team that partners closely with our Missouri Mines Chapter.

We closed out the year with the 2018 Maryland Tech Challenge Invitational in Baltimore as a gold-level sponsor for the event, offering the winning alliance of the competition the Triangle Cup. For the 2018-2019 year we hope to expand on the progress we’ve already made. We plan to continue our scholarship program available to help high school seniors realize their dream of pursuing a STEM education, we look forward to expanding chapter involvement in FIRST events and getting our brothers credentialed as event organizers and competition judges, and we hope to make greater use of our FIRST grant program to fund teams and different volunteer-related activities that might otherwise be restricted due to different costs. I am excited to see where we will go with this—and a note to our chapter leaders: it never hurts to start planning early!

I’d also like to take a moment to personally thank all the volunteers who helped out this past year. FIRST is an incredible organization with a mission that fosters many of the same values as our fraternity. I’m very excited to see where this partnership will lead in the future, and excited to see the impact that this will have on both our brothers and in the STEM community.

First John Sonnenburg Scholarship to be Awarded

rior to his passing into Chapter Eternal in September 2017, John Sonnenburg pur73 established the John Sonnenburg Scholarship in the Triangle Education Foundation. This newest Triangle Education Foundation Scholarship is a need based award with a minimum GPA requirement of 2.7 and preference to Purdue applicants.

Brother Sonnenburg was raised in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was an Eagle Scout. John was a proud Purdue Triangle and graduated with a degree in civil engineering in 1976.

John was a project executive at Harmon, Inc, and his career motto was, “Under promise and over deliver.” One of John’s colleagues shared the following, “John was a legendary project executive known for his drive and meticulous attention to details that he projected to all around him.”

John and his wife Sally enjoyed traveling to the different places in the USA and England that John had worked during his career. In addition to Sally, John is survived by his three sons, three grandchildren and numerous other family including his brother Roger Sonnenburg pur75 and nephew David Sonnenburg pur03.

“We are honored that John saw fit to establish a scholarship endowment in the Triangle Education Foundation that will annually provide a scholarship for a student worthy of John’s legacy”, shared Scott Bova CFRE, President of the Triangle Education Foundation.

ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM UPDATE With the addition of the John Sonnenburg Scholarship, the Triangle Education Foundation’s endowed scholarship program has grown to twenty scholarship endowments supporting annual awards totaling $75,000 per year. Funding a scholarship endowment requires a minimum gift of $25,000 (which may be funded over several years), and donors have the ability to name the fund and set criteria for the award(s).

Making a House a Home

IMAGINE YOU WERE ASKED to look at a map of your campus and pick the top three areas you would want to have a house. You sit down with your fellow brothers and circle places you wouldn’t mind calling home. Now imagine that the alumni come back with a house, but it is not in one of your circled areas, instead it is located in an area of campus so amazing, that you did not even dare to circle it on the map. That is exactly what happened for the brothers of the Cincinnati Chapter.

Through a unique opportunity, the alumni were able to acquire their classic Greek house for actives to live in. Alumni Board President, Gary Bodnar pur76 proudly recounted this and many more stories for the Triangle Building & Housing Corporation. Join us, as we highlight the Cincinnati chapter house which includes exciting features such as the brand new customized door and elevated seating.

PROPERTY IMPROVEMENT CONTEST OBJECTIVE To encourage Active Chapters to undertake improvement projects in their Chapter Houses and/or communities. Project examples could be, but are not limited to, such things as improving life safety (fire safety, security, accessibility), general home improvement projects (landscaping, paint, room remodeling, bike racks, flooring, LED lighting, etc.) and community improvements/involvement (playground equipment, FIRST Robotics sponsor/volunteer).

GRANT AMOUNTS Grants totaling up to $10,000 per year will be disbursed based on the following: • Number of project proposals submitted • Estimated costs of proposed project • Quality of proposal and the project • Impact of the project

HOW TO APPLY Submit a project proposal to pic@trianglebhc.org detailing the improvement (pictures and drawings are encouraged), the estimated costs, the time-line, and a list of the individuals performing the work. Please include the chapter’s and project’s primary contact. Permission from the owner of the property is also required.

By entering the TBHC Property Improvement Contest, the Chapter warrants the information provided is complete and truthful. Failure to provide complete and truthful information or to mislead the Contest Committee in any way, or to not complete the work as described will be grounds to deny an award and prohibit subsequent submissions at the Committee’s and TBHC Board’s sole discretion. Should the Chapter have received any award based on incomplete, misleading, or false information or if the work as described is not completed, the Chapter shall be required to immediately refund the full award to TBHC. The individual submitting the application represents and warrants that it has the authority to bind the Chapter according to these terms.

Triangle Mourns the Passing of John M. Storm pur73 THE ENTIRE Triangle family mourns the loss of a great brother who exemplified the values of Triangle. John M. Storm pur73 passed into Chapter Eternal on May 13, 2018. Brother Storm was initiated into the Purdue chapter on November 1, 1973 and had long been a loyal supporter of his Purdue chapter and Triangle Fraternity.

John enjoyed his time as an active in the Purdue Triangle chapter and left the legacy that it was good when brothers live together in harmony. Brother Storm continued his involvement with Triangle as an alumnus by supporting the chapter’s Grand Prix Teams, and speaking at Triangle leadership programs. At the time of his passing, John served as a Director of the Triangle Education Foundation.

For the past several years, John and his wife Mary Ann hosted the “Triangle Day at the Track” event in their suite at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, raising significant funds in support of Triangle’s leadership and student aid programs.

John was recognized as a Triangle Man of the Century during the Fraternity’s 100th anniversary celebrations and was a 2014 inductee onto the Triangle Wall of Fame. In addition to his Triangle and numerous other accolades, Brother Storm was honored with the Purdue Distinguished Engineering Alumnus award in 2004.

CHAPTER

John was raised on a small farm and learned at a young age the value of hard work and perseverance. After graduating from North Salem High School, John went on to Purdue where he graduated with his BSMEE in 1977. John started his career with the Detroit Diesel Allison Division (DDA) of General Motors and while at DDA he developed and patented a new thermodynamic process used to heat-treat irregularly shaped parts. John left DDA in 1986 to co-found Contour Hardening, Inc. Under Brother Storm’s leadership, Contour grew to be a leader in the field of heat treatments with facilities in Indianapolis, Indiana and Silao, Mexico. More than 200 US and international patents are credited to John.

John was a devoted family man and is survived by his wife Mary Ann, daughter Emily, daughter Allison, grandson Charles and numerous other family including his older brother David Storm pur72.

“It was an honor to know John and to have the opportunity to work with him,” shared Scott Bova CFRE, President of the Triangle Education Foundation, “John was a truly remarkable man whose interests ranged from vintage audio equipment to fast cars, I know that he will be missed.”

MAKING A DIFFERENCE THROUGH VNADs Want to make a modest gift with a powerful impact? Want to play a financial role in supporting important programs of the Fraternity? Triangle’s VNAD program fits the bill! What the heck are VNADs? Established by the Triangle National Convention, the Voluntary National Alumni Dues (VNAD) program asks alumni to pay a fair share in the cost of the staff and programs to support our active and alumni chapters, the events to bring members together, and the systems to maintain our membership records and Fraternity memorabilia.

Currently, less than 4% of alumni members pay VNADs, making up only about 6% of our annual budget. That means more than 65% of the annual budget is paid by active dues and fees from a population of less than 5% of the membership. To keep our undergraduate membership costs competitive while also providing the important support services our chapters need, VNAD income is vital!

The VNAD program is important to Triangle for many reasons...

• Allows alumni to support Triangle at a lower entry level, as an alternate/compliment to major gifts; • VNAD income underwrites valuable programs and services to our chapters, helping them to succeed; • Since gifts are not tax-deductible, Triangle can use them for programs that are not fully qualified for educational grants; • Fulfills the expectation that alumni continue to participate in and give back to Triangle.

If you give to the Triangle Education Foundation, Thank You! Foundation gifts are tax-deductible to donors, so they are restricted in how they can be used to support the Fraternity. Qualified educational programs such as our Presidents Leadership Academy and Herb Scobie Leadership School receive TEF grants and do great work to elevate the leadership skills of our active members.

However, foundation grants cannot be used for other essential needs like recruitment assistance, expansion or chapter management, nor can they support day-to-day expenses of the Fraternity or pay for alumni events. Therefore, VNAD income is an essential part of the overall budget plan. If we can reach 12% or more of our budget from VNAD income, undergraduate fees may not need to increase year to year.

VNAD funds can be applied wherever Triangle’s need is greatest, without restrictions. VNAD income provides funding for staff and programs to help chapters recruit and manage themselves better, and to provide support for alumni engagement. Any of the following programs can be helped by VNAD income:

A strong alumnus support program includes both deductible gifts and non-deductible dues. Those who can afford major gifts of $1,000 and more, may still wish to contribute to the Triangle Education Foundation and receive a tax deduction. Those who want to give at lower levels, where a deduction may not be as important, can give through our VNAD program. Ideally, you can do both!
