PRESIDENT’S ANGLE “What is Triangle?”

There has been a lot of activity and discussion at the national and local level in how to answer this question.

Traditionally, our response has been straight-forward: “Triangle is a social fraternity that limits its acceptance to men pursuing majors in Engineering, Architecture, and the Sciences.”

We have maintained and rehearsed that sentence for the last several decades.

However, if we were to ask someone who is not affiliated with Triangle, “what is Triangle,” I assert we would get a wide variety of answers. This is because people can know things not solely by how things are described, but by what they observe. So, taking it a step further, the next logical question could be, “what actions define Triangle?”

Hopefully, your mind should start to gravitate toward our Code of Ethics. As I stated in my previous article in the Summer 2019 Review, our Code of Ethics is unique. We are the only fraternity that has a public Code of Ethics.

One of the items I truly respect about our Code of Ethics is that it is specific enough for a brother to understand, yet it is still flexible enough to have some interpretation. If I may be so bold, I would like to focus on two of the ethics and be a bit more prescriptive of how we should act based on trends I have observed in academia, industry, and within Triangle.

“6. Maintain a creditable scholastic record.”

Please note the use of the word “maintain.”

For our active member, it is an expectation of a Triangle brother to be consistent in his academic achievement and avoiding ebbs and flows in performance. Our minimum GPA requirement for new members is a 2.75.

While that is the standard, that is not the expectation. That is not “creditable.”

While a 2.75 may help you get a job, I have noticed over the past 15 years that a majority of employers tend to focus their minimum requirements between a 3.00 and a 3.25.

I expect our Brothers, active and alumni, along with Staff members to be pushing our chapters to “maintain creditable scholastic records,” in order to further our legacy of being pioneers in our respective scientific fields.

Not only did we choose to learn the most difficult fields of science available, we chose to be good at them too.

For our alumnus Brother, it is an expectation of a Triangle member to be consistent in your career achievement and personal lives.

Having Stability in your life is a struggle while trying to balance all of your priorities.

Making good agreements, keeping those agreements, and doing what you say you will do on a consistent basis will drive career results, strengthen your relationships, and shape your Character. Avoid the words “might,” “hope,” and “try.” Commit to your agreements. Remember your words are a selffulfilling prophecy. “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you’re right.” – Henry Ford “7. Promote the welfare of my profession.”

I have always taken this directly to mean, “join your professional organization, promote your trade.” As I have reflected on this further, I feel there is an alternative interpretation in “preparing your prospective career readiness” or “advancing the health of your own career.” I think this Ethic is incredibly important in being a Triangle and I want to break it down further.

I expect that you are preparing yourself for entering into industry or advanced academia.

There are many ways to do so, but here are a few that I would expect our chapters to be doing with help from alumni Brothers and friends: resume reviews, mock interviews, industry and job presentations. Always attend job fairs, even if you aren’t looking for work. Practice promoting and advocating for yourself. You will be advocating for yourself

I expect that you are working with our national partnership, FIRST Robotics, to foster the K-12 interest in our professions. This can be mentoring a team, volunteering at FIRST events, facilitating scholarships to FIRST, and providing an enjoyable space for FIRST teams to do their builds. All FIRST participants are future friends or prospective members of Triangle when we invest our time and energy here.

I expect that you are going back to your chapter or a chapter near you to discuss your career and make your knowledge available to help our undergraduate brothers prepare for their careers.

I expect that you are enrolling in Triangle Connect, our own member-only social and professional networking platform, to post jobs you or your company are hiring for.

I expect that we are taking time, together, to attend or host events that are aligned to our scientific interests as much as we attend or host events that are our social interests. That could mean we attend research events at our universities, TED talks, company tours, etc.

One hundred and thirteen years ago, our Founders created Triangle not only born out of a desire of camaraderie and Friendship, but in harmony with our scientific and professional interests. I ask that you take, at the very least, one expectation and make a commitment to yourself to act on it. It will be just one step forward, one action, in a life-long journey to further our legacy: a legacy of pioneers, inventors, researchers, and successful contributors to our chosen fields of profession. The actions of these fields advance society, solve problems, and help humanity. These are the actions that build a better world. These are the actions that define Triangle.

Weathering this Storm TOM P E N N I N G TON As this issue was ready to go to press, the Nation is in the midst of a crippling pandemic due to the emergence of COVID-19. While we did not want to change the focus of our issue on Triangle’s Benefits to Members, we do know our members are concerned about the impact of this crisis on our chapters.

The National Council and HQ staff remain focused on working for our membership. The HQ remains open, though most are working remotely now, and staff will remain accessible and dedicated to their jobs. Our National Council is meeting virtually each week to assess the situation and National President Joe Cerrato os05 is holding live updates to our members each Monday at 9 PM Eastern on our private Facebook group – “Triangle Fraternity Nation Wide”.

We understand, for most chapters, cash flow is slowed or stopped as members have returned home. We are waiving late fees and working to provide ways for chapters to continue to operate with limited resources. With the Foundation, we have begun an online fundraising campaign to help pay down existing chapter accounts to help our active chapters weather this storm. We also will be reviewing our options under current SBA Emergency funds to offset our expected budget deficit.

The Triangle Building and Housing Corporation (TBHC) is working with chapter housing volunteers to help find sources of funding and to provide advice on keeping properties safe without residents. Triangle Education Foundation is helping students with no-interest loans and need-based grants and to utilize chapter endowment funds for eligible chapter expenses.

We have cancelled this summer’s Scobie Leadership School, as we cannot be certain of the ability to meet in June as expected. Those resources will be redirected to online programming and to regional on-campus programs in fall and spring to reach more undergraduates at the same or lower cost. We also will depend on our Council Outreach program – a National Council member contact for each chapter – to improve communications with our students.

To date (April 3), we have had no report of any undergraduate member with symptoms of the Coronavirus and we hope no members fall victim during this pandemic.

With no certainty as to what our fall/spring will bring, we will stay focused on providing the support needed monthto-month and plan for what we can control.

What can alumni do to help?

• Reach out to your chapter representatives to show support.

• If you know of a good prospect for membership, get his name and contact information to your chapter; we don’t know what fall recruitment will look like yet.

Triangle has weathered other storms in our history, including both World Wars. Our members are creative problem-solvers and we will work together to get through this unique challenge. With the support of alumni, students, family and friends Triangle will emerge from this smarter and stronger and the experience will help us plan a better future. C H A P T E R U P D AT E S CHARLOTTE s Charlotte currently boasts the highest GPA among IFC fraternities, an accomplishment we hope to replicate in the Spring. Last semester we initiated two new Brothers, both of whom attended LTW in January. We’re currently planning our annual Car Bash philanthropy, as well as Founders Day. We are also co-sponsoring a St. Baldrick’s fundraiser with AOE, which is planned for April. IOWA STATE s Iowa State had a successful recruitment, initiating 14 members in the Fall and anticipating at least five new members for the Spring. We’ve shaken up Spring recruitment events a bit, featuring a Beach Night (complete with sand castle competitions and smoothies), ice cream social, charades, and – most recently – Brotines (Valentine’s) Day celebration! We’re also excited to launch our inaugural “Tots and Bots” philanthropy event benefiting FIRST Robotics! We are inviting middle school FIRST teams to attend and showcase their robots, as well as learn more about pursuing a STEM degree.

ROSE TECH s Rose gained 18 new members this Fall, two of whom are baseball players and 12 of whom are soccer players.

The Fall saw additional success in academics, as the chapter achieved an average GPA of 3.43/4.0. Our members achieved this while simultaneously being involved in Rose’s Residence Hall Association, IFC, varsity sports teams, and various jobs on campus.

TEXAS s The Texas interest group is currently at 14 members, with 2 more pinned in March. We are also had our scholarship dinner on February 22nd and a dodgeball tournament as well. President Moksh Chitkara is excited to begin his first internship at NarrativeDx, a company founded by Br. Kyle Robertson is01!

WASHINGTON s The Washington Colony is initiating 13 new members this quarter, and we’re planning to recruit 5-10 more this Spring. Our GPA last quarter was 3.41. Also, you can’t call us a colony much longer – National Council has approved our petition for chapterhood and we will hold our installation this fall!

Highlights from Leadership & Training Weekend 2020

Triangle Undergrad Leaders Come from All Over to LTW TOM P E N N I N G TON

very January, Triangle hosts chapter officers from across the nation at its annual Leadership and Training Weekend (LTW). This is an opportunity for our campus leaders to gather together with National Council members, Fraternity, Foundation and Triangle Building & Housing Corporation (TBHC) staff, and our volunteer facilitators to learn lessons of leadership and to celebrate being in Triangle. This year’s program had a total attendance of over 160 students, faculty, staff and guests.

LTW weekend is built upon five undergraduate officer/program tracks: •

The Steven L. Miller Presidents’ Leadership Academy (SLMPLA) for chapter presidents, endowed by a gift from Steven L. Miller ill64.

•

The Wakerly Service Learning Workshop, endowed by gifts from the family of John Wakerly marq69.

•

Our Elevate Recruitment Workshop for chapter recruitment chairs and assistants.

•

A Financial Workshop for chapter treasurers and assistant treasurers.

•

The Lifestyle & Education Workshop for new member educators and brotherhood/membership chairs.

In addition, for this and the last two years, we’ve offered two additional tracks specifically for alumni: •

The Fraternal Health & Safety Initiative (FHSI) is a “train the trainers” program that prepares alumni to be risk management educators for their chapter and others. Each participant is expected to deliver one of four risk education programs to chapters each semester – twice a year.

Our Triangle Recruitment Coach (TRC) track trains alumni to be valuable recruitment coaches for chapters, teaching groups to plan and execute effective recruitment programs.

The three-day program begins Friday as men fly and drive in to come together for the welcome kick-off and dinner.

This year’s group was welcomed by Triangle President Joe Cerrato os05, Executive Director Tom Pennington, Triangle Education Foundation President Scott Bova and TBHC Executive Director Mike Fouts.

Director of Chapter Services, Drew Hopson, served as lead facilitator and coordinated our amazing team of volunteer group leaders, both Triangle alumni and campus fraternity advisors from Indiana State, Johns Hopkins, Purdue and Saginaw Valley State. Most National Council members also were in attendance to interact with our students and provide opportunities to “Converse with Council”.

Each track provided education, ideas and resources to our chapter leaders and allowed them to share knowledge and experience from chapter to chapter. The campground venue at Jameson Camp in Plainfield, IN provided a bunkhouse style living environment where members found it easy to make friends and have deep discussions.

Food and beverage was all-you-can-eat and covered major meals and snacks between, so no one left hungry.

A welcome return to the schedule was the Saturday morning challenge course for the Presidents track.

Presidents rose early and worked with trained course facilitators to learn team building and motivational skills.

It also took them outside for a bit in what was generally a mild winter weekend.

Overall, the results of the program were better education and training for our leaders, stronger communications between Council and chapters, and improved energy and enthusiasm within our members to return and lead their chapters. Our next LTW program will be held January 1517, 2021, again at Jameson Camp.

This program, combined with our Herb Scobie Leadership School in even-numbered summers, provides strong leadership and service training for our men. Still more could be done. We need more recruitment training by region, to allow more than just a few members to attend.

And we would do well to take our Scobie leadership program regionally as well, to get more men engaged and focused on being good leaders.

We have two endowed tracks today, but with additional support we could endow all tracks and take more of them regional. Triangle Friends for Life E L I I M M A S C H E csu01 On July 21, 2019, I got married to my lovely bride, Liberty.

As this was a joyous occasion, I wanted to make sure to invite my friends and family to help us celebrate the occasion. As I made the list of friends that I wanted to invite, it slowly dawned on me how many of my friends were members of Triangle. While my list included my Pledge Father and Brothers from the time I was an undergrate at Colorado State University, it also included many brothers that were both younger and older than myself. I found that being a member of Triangle allowed me to connect with many great people that I probably would never have had a chance to meet otherwise.

When the happy day came, I wanted to make sure to get a picture with all of the Triangles that had made the journey to Colorado. Some only had to travel a few miles to get to the wedding, while others traveled much farther from places like New York and California. In total, over 30 Triangle Brothers and their significant others were able to celebrate with my wife and I as we got married. This tradition of coming together continues, as many of us take group vacations every summer that National Convention is not being held. I enjoy this group of friends, and I know that it will only grow as new men join the ranks of being a Triangle. s 9

Life-long Brotherhood M IC HA E L E . L A RG O msu67 It was a time of The Beatles and Motown. The Cold War raged on and a proxy war in Southeast Asia escalated. We were striving for the moon and civil rights. The city of East Lansing was still honoring Prohibition and women had to be in the dorm by midnight.

And yet brotherhood prevailed at our house at 242 North Harrison. On Monday nights we would set aside our slide rules and attend a house meeting where chapter matters were discussed at length. We were near capacity at 31 actives. None of us worried about unemployment lines as we neared graduation.

After graduation, in the decades that followed, the Berlin Wall came down as well as the Twin Towers. One president resigned and another was impeached. We got married, had careers, raised families, and retired. Meanwhile several attempts were made by the alumni of Triangle Fraternity at MSU to become involved with the fraternity and their alumni brothers.

And then one day, the phone rang. It was brother James.

I hadn’t seen him for 40 years. He brought pictures of our fraternity brothers and their wives from a reunion they recently had. This was the beginning of a series of annual reunions that continues today. Thanks to the advent of emails, a group of MSU Triangle alumni from the late 60s can easily be informed of upcoming reunions.

Reunions have been held in Scottsville, VA; Williamsburg, VA; Plymouth, MA; East Lansing, MI, Orlanda, FL; Cameron, MO; Bowling Green, KY; the Finger Lakes region of New York, and other places.

We visited attractions like the Plymouth Plantation, wineries in the Finger Lakes region of New York, Mammoth Cave National Park, the Corvette Museum, the Sandwich Glass Museum, the Culinary Institute of America, and the homes of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt.

On August 17, 2017 we went out to Cameron, Missouri for the total solar eclipse, only to get rained on. Once we gathered in East Lansing for a homecoming game but we were rained on there as well; although we did get to see the fraternity house again.

At each reunion, we usually select one of the brothers and his wife to plan the next reunion. This year we plan on meeting in St. Louis.

It’s great when someone we haven’t seen in a long time shows up at one of our reunions.

We spend a lot of time gathering in the lobby of hotels just talking about recent and past events. This effort has been a great success and we hope that Triangle Brothers from other eras do the same. s

The Impact of Triangle Brotherhood J OH N G A RG A N I pitt82 As I approach 40 years as a Triangle Brother, I wanted to share my thoughts on what brotherhood has meant and means to me.

having brothers from California to Connecticut, and from Texas to Minnesota. Many of the people I consider my best friends are Triangle Brothers (even if one has an odd obsession with the metric system). I find it interesting that I have stayed in touch with many of my brothers from college. On the other hand, I have lost track of most of my other, non-Triangle, friends from college.

I think this is due to the special connection you have with your brothers that you do not necessarily have with folks that are just friends.

I have brothers that range from my Father’s age to ones that are younger than my children. I also have the pleasure of having a son, Matthew Gargani pitt10, that is a Triangle.

Being a Triangle Brother has very significantly impacted my life. I was initiated in the Pitt Chapter in my first term freshman year in 1982.

At the time, I had no idea how this would affect the rest of my life. All I knew at the time was that the Pitt Brothers were a great group of guys who I enjoyed being around, had fun with, and who shared a lot of the same interests that I had. Feeling comfortable. It is an underrated, and often overlooked perk of brotherhood. It can be, and often is, simple. Such as when a new intramural season of soccer starts, and brothers who haven’t played soccer since 5th grade step out of their comfort zone to tackle the season head on with their fellow Triangles. Many of whom never expected to jump in like that, but knowing the results of the season do not matter. Knowing that what does matter is the personal growth, as brothers graduate from 5th grade amateur soccer star to active learner and leader.

This is Triangle Brotherhood. To be taught, to want to grow; that is what makes it such an amazing thing.

We have no fear of failure, whether personal or for the organization. For us as a team, being comfortable with our brothers creates a sense of freedom. We accept that we are in it together before taking any measures to win, and it feels even greater when we do.

It also creates laughter. First, as friends. Brothers always seem to laugh harder when you have another across the 12

room to look at. Sometimes it’s because of moments, where they look at each other like “did that just happen?”

But other times it’s because of jokes, bantering, and other related comments. Which brings up the second, as boundary testers.

When comfortable, brothers push the limits of acceptable commentary. After seeing comedians on Netflix do it, it seems pretty easy. Yet, as performance is not one of the accepted majors, likely Triangles are not professionals, and are also likely to screw up more often. Netflix comedians are subject to, but not limited to: angry tweets, hate mail, lost careers, slander articles, and the list goes on. Conversely, the chapters are safe training grounds for those attempting a sense of humor. Brothers can laugh about coronavirus till it begins to personally affect them, and some will still after. It is something you don’t truly understand until you experience it. The comfort you feel in brotherhood is the same way. A few antonyms for comfort are hardship, grief, stress, and depression. These are combated by Triangle Brotherhood, and the results are a serene state of mind.

They can still be introverted, and many are naturally, but they have an ability to communicate and participate in a capacity they did not feel comfortable enough to do before. Brothers watch as they grow just in time for another semester's batch of new members join the brotherhood.

So when you think about the benefits of brotherhood, remember that it is not just a feeling, a group, or a memory, but also a state of mind you find yourself in when you are truly exposed to it. Stay serene, be grateful, and be a good brother, for just like the "good ole days," you do not realize what you have until it’s gone. s

When I joined Triangle, I had no idea just what I was in for. I never saw myself as joining Greek Life, nor did I even pay attention to it. I just happened to stumble across a rush event and was intrigued. Despite all the Active members explaining to me just how beneficial this organization can be, I never would’ve imagined the impact that it has had in my life.

I have made connections with brothers that will last a lifetime. I was aware that joining a fraternity could easily lead to that, and that was something that I truly hoped to gain from it. Not knowing anyone on campus made it very easy for me to justify why this would be beneficial to me. Although that was a major aspect of my experience, it was not a surprise. What I was surprised by was how much it helped me grow as a person.

Prior to starting college, and through my freshman year, I was always very reserved, and not outgoing. I was nervous giving presentations in front of people, or even just speaking in groups. I didn’t know how to hold conversations with anyone other than close friends. It was always awkward, and looking back, I cringe every time I think of it. As my days in college are coming to an end, I’ve seen the impact that Triangle has made on who I am. I went from being the guy with nervous voice cracks in the middle of class presentations, to being able to confidently stand in front of top leaders in a Fortune 100 company, convincing them of my ideas.

I can attribute this to nothing other than what I have gained through the fraternity. Before Triangle, I have never had the opportunity to present to groups as often as I have, and in such a comfortable environment, aside from with my brothers. I came to college hoping to learn the knowledge required to be hired at a technology company.

As it turns out, it wasn’t the books that got me there.

What got me there were the essential skills I learned through my brothers and working to build a stronger chapter at UNC Charlotte.

" I knew as soon as I joined the fraternity that it could have an impact on me. " Having had the opportunity to serve as my chapter’s president for a year, it also helped to teach me a lot about leadership, and how to better understand everyone.

I learned how beneficial it can be as a leader to know how to be compassionate towards everyone. Instead of being the one to simply tell people what to do or be upset when it doesn’t go as it should, I had to put in the effort to understand where everyone was coming from and sympathize with them. While this is a valuable skill that can be utilized in the workplace, it has also helped strengthen my personal relationships.

I knew as soon as I joined the fraternity that it could have an impact on me. Originally, I only thought about the ability to have close relationships that you cherish. As true as that proved to be, there was more to be gained. I’ve had the opportunity to grow as a person, and I will always be thankful for that. Triangle isn’t a four-year commitment, but instead an experience that will impact you for the rest of your life. Chapter Endowment Funds are a way to provide direct support to our chapters for educational expenses they have. Chapters can use these funds for everything from 3D printers to paying for National Educational Programs.

These grants help keep chapters strong by offering monies to pay for programs and opportunities that members may not otherwise have access to.

The Foundation has a robust scholarship program that awards over $80,000 every year to undergraduate and graduate students! We also offer $10,000 in 0% interest, emergency student loans every year for those members that just need a little extra help finishing up the school year.

Remembering Our Brothers Edward Wedbush Enters Chapter Eternal A Loss for Triangle and the Business Community JAC K HO C HA DE L cin 5 2 & R A N DA L L DR E W ros e 6 7 EDWARD W. WEDBUSH cin50, born in St. Louis, Missouri on September 14, 1932, graduated in 1955 from the University of Cincinnati in Mechanical Engineering entered Chapter Eternal on January 5, 2020, at the age of 87 in his home in Rancho Santa Fe, California. Ed received a Wagner Electric Company scholarship to attend Cincinnati where he was involved in campus politics becoming the first engineering student to be elected University Senior Class President. Ed also played tennis there and Tony Trabert (former #1 tennis champion and longtime tennis author, TV commentator, instructor & motivational speaker) used him for workouts.

Upon graduating in 1955 Wedbush received a scholarship position at Hughes Aircraft in Culver City, California which included attending graduate school at UCLA to earn his MBA. The following year in 1956 he assisted Hughes in recruiting Cincinnati Triangle brothers Michael Kausch cin52 and Jack Hochadel cin52 for positions at the company. The three of them then purchased a beach home just a five-minute drive from the Hughes facility.

The three men were then involved in starting the Triangle chapter at UCLA and made loans to assist in the purchase of the chapter house. During these early years, Ed met his soon-to-be wife Jean, a young nurse, when she was brought to a party at the house by a mutual friend.

on the dining room table of the beach home.

Their first real office was opened in the Crenshaw district of Los Angeles in 1957, and he subsequently accrued several other area brokerage businesses. In 1971 they bought a membership in the New York Stock Exchange. After over 60 years of growing the business, it is the leading independent West Coast stock brokerage company with over 800 employees and 99 offices in several states. Wedbush & Company is now owned and run by Ed’s sons Gary and Eric.

Among the many accolades he has received were in 2000 an Honorary Doctors Degree and in 2004 a Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Cincinnati. He was also named one of the top 100 executives by the Los Angeles Times.

Wedbush was an early member of the Triangle Wall of Fame in the fourth class to be inducted in 1998. In 2011, Wedbush received the Fraternity’s highest honor, the Triangle Service Key. Wedbush served two decades on the Triangle Education Foundation Board of Directors from 1996 to 2016 also serving as the Board’s Investment Chair where he oversaw significant growth of the Foundation’s endowment. Ed was also a member of the University of Cincinnati Foundation Board. When Ed attended Board meetings on campus, he always enjoyed stopping by the Cincinnati Chapter house and chatting with the actives.

Always when asked when he was going to retire Ed would answer “I am now only working half-days, from 5:30AM to 5:30PM”. Both the Los Angeles Times and the Wall Street Journal ran extensive stories and pictures about his passing, his life, family and companies. It is said that the founding and growth of Wedbush Securities is a true American success story. s

Pat Kelly, Brother, General, and Leader In honor and remembrance of Major General Patrick Joseph Kelly marq56 September 2, 1937 - September 13, 2019

J I M H E L DE R marq57 My wife Margie and I were traveling in France, sharing a car with the Kellys, the ladies in the back seat, Pat and I in front sharing the duties of driving and navigating, I had not seen Pat since college and we were getting caught up on our lives since then. I was particularly interested in Pat’s military career, especially his overseas tours of duty. Here is the story we discussed as best as I can recall: It was Pat’s second deployment to Vietnam getting toward the end of the US participation. I asked Pat how much difference there was in this tour compared to his first, “Oh my gosh; what a change.

Morale was really low.” These troops had seen enough of body parts flying through the air and body bags being flown home. There was loss of respect for the leaders of the military as well as the leaders of the country. The troops were outright resisting and disregarding orders, which in earlier times would have led to courts martial and even execution.

Pat was probably a major by this time and was soon given the orders to move his men out through an area known to be booby-trapped and seeded with land mines. The non-coms told him, “Major, the troops ain’t gonna go.” Decision time. Pat knew that applying the old rules probably would not work well now. He told his sergeant to get a truck, “We’ll put sand bags under and around the seats; more sand bags in the truck bed and you and I sergeant are going to back the truck through the mine field and the men will follow in our tracks. If we hit a mine the sand bags should give us some protection.”

Nobody had ever tried it before and he never found out how effective the sand bags would have been.

They never hit a mine.

“ My God,you could have been killed!”

As he was finishing the story his wife Marilyn from the back seat stopped her conversation with Margie and said, “Pat, you did what? I never heard that story!

My God, you could have been killed!”

“That’s why I never told you.” He also told me later on that there were more stories from that time that he had not told her or anyone else, and that was probably true of most of those who were over there.

I think the narrative exemplifies the role of true leadership in a man who recognized how to be an effective true leader: being able to assess the situation, immediately coming up with a solution that isn’t quite according to protocol, but not really against the rules, and getting the job done. He could have said, as had many before him, “Troops, get out there and cross that field.” There’s a big difference in those who lead from the front and those who lead from the rear.

Leadership is more than giving orders and expecting others to follow; a true leader doesn’t ask others to do something he himself will not do. s

Brother Marshall pur65, was previously the Associate Director of Computing Research for the Office of Space Management and Academic Scheduling at Purdue University.

He received his bachelors of science degree in 1967 and a master of science in 1970, both from Purdue University. He worked in the Office of Space Management and Scheduling for Purdue for 46 years, retiring as Associate Director of Computing Research in 2013. Jim is a distinguished leader in his field as he was instrumental in the development of the computer program that brought classroom space and class scheduling and final exam assignment out of the dark ages of paper and pencil and into the computer age. This development was the “big bang” of computerized scheduling for higher ed, a system originated by Jim and Purdue that after decades of evolution is now in use around the world.

Jim was initiated into the Triangle Chapter at Purdue in 1965 and graduated in 1967. After graduation his passion for Triangle only grew. Jim served for nearly 40 years on the Purdue Triangle Alumni Board and 30+ years on the Triangle National Building Loan Fund/ Building & Housing Corp. Jim twice served as Triangle National President (1979-1980 and 1987-1988); Triangle National Council 1976-1981, 1986-1989; and received the National Service Key in 1995.

Oklahoma Chapter Works to Heal Neighborhood Rift C ON N I E SI E F E R M A N , C ON T R I BU TOR

A dictionary search for the word “fraternity” yields this definition: the state or feeling of friendship and mutual support within a group. That meaning of the word certainly holds true for the members of Triangle’s chapter at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. However, their sense of friendship and mutual support extends beyond the walls of the chapter house. A surprising and occasionally turbulent history with their residential neighbors has become a heart-warming turnabout story worth sharing.

The historic and architecturallysignificant chapter house was originally built in 1930 for another fraternity. A couple of years later, it was sold to a sorority. Purchased in 1959 by a religious organization, it was then intended for use as a retirement home and served as such for more than 40 years.

Triangle acquired the property at auction in 2000. With 22 bedrooms, a commercial kitchen and other useful communal spaces, this was viewed as a good investment for a fraternity of modest size. In addition, its location close to campus engineering facilities was seen as a convenient plus.

Since the house sits in a residential area composed largely of singlefamily dwellings, the local neighbor2 4

hood organization objected to Triangle’s purchase from the very beginning. The neighbors had hoped that the house would be converted to a private residence. The concerns associated with the purchase eventually led the neighborhood group to bring suit, attempting to prevent the fraternity from occupying the property.

Attorneys for Triangle based their response to the suit on the argument that use of the structure as a fraternity was essentially the same as its prior use as a retirement home.

Additionally, they pleaded the case for its original 1930 zoning exception to operate as a fraternal organization.

Despite their efforts, the City of Norman declined to continue the zoning exception. The case then

proceeded to progress through several courts.

In the first two years after Triangle’s purchase of the house, it was occupied by the maximum allowed number of three brothers. Because that did not produce enough income to pay expenses, the building was temporarily leased out to another organization. Meanwhile, the troubling legal case finally reached the Oklahoma Supreme Court in 2002.

In a surprising turn of events, the high state court rendered a decision in favor of Triangle Fraternity. By overturning previous decisions, a judgement was entered against the City of Norman to allow occupation of the house by the fraternity. Thus it happened that, in January of 2003, W W W. a total of 12 men moved into the chapter house. Plans were put into place for necessary renovations to the 73-year-old property.

As one might imagine, relationships with the long-standing residents of the surrounding neighborhood were rough. The community association was not happy about the fraternity moving back into the area, fearing that a Greek organization might make modifications to a historic landmark cherished by the neighborhood. Triangle men, all too aware of their neighbors’ opposition to the presence of a fraternity, naturally kept to themselves and their own interests while seeking to recruit and build the Oklahoma chapter successfully.

Time has a way of healing wounds.

Neal Helfrey rit08, a transplanted alumnus, has lived in the Oklahoma house as superintendent for the past two years.

He describes his first contact with a neighborhood homeowner.

“I was working hard at the house SPRING 2020

when I assumed the role of superintendent. Gutting some of the interior areas for renovation, painting outside and in, cleaning and so on. It was a big job! A lot had been neglected for quite a while. I loved it, but it was hard work.” As he toiled outside the building one day, a neighbor ambled over to chat and compliment him on the effort he was making to improve the property. That conversation was a beginning.

“That was Lee Hall, president of the neighborhood association. She had only lived across the street for a couple of years, but was aware of the troublesome history between the residents and the fraternity. We started talking and hit it off right from the beginning!

That conversation opened up the opportunity to continue speaking to each other occasionally.”

When people start talking, things change. It wasn’t long before Hall reached out to the chapter president with an idea. She tells the story with great enthusiasm. “I asked if he (the president) would be interested in

hosting a neighborhood get-together at the house. They have a big front yard which I thought would make a great gathering place for everyone.

He was very willing!” The event was scheduled and the neighbors turned out in good number, along with many of the Triangle men. Hall adds, “And the fraternity was so gracious.

They provided ice cream for the event. It was a wonderful time.”

The next thing that evolved from those first steps toward reconciliation was a Halloween event for the neighborhood children. Helfrey recalls the conversation when Hall broached the idea. “She came to us and asked if we would mind them doing a pumpkin-carving party on the lawn. Our answer was yes.

Can we help?” Hall nostalgically remembers the involvement of the fraternity at that event. “It was fun for the neighbors, a safe place for the kids to trick-or-treat. When we reached out to the men, they were – once again – very willing.

They helped get pumpkins ready for carving, they set up tables, they 25

played with the kids. It felt like we were really building a relationship.”

The Active President to whom Hall originally reached out with her idea for neighborhood events was Trevor Cooper ok16. He echoes her sentiments regarding those early gatherings and the subsequent impact of bringing everyone together.

“The men of Triangle and I believed that having and supporting the neighborhood events was a great way to show our neighbors that we could have a positive influence on the community. The biggest influence in our relationship is our neighbors Lee and Rick Hall. In reality, the only steps I had to take were to support the neighborhood programming and encourage Triangle members to assist at these events. Due to this, most of the neighbors who were originally against us occupying the house eventually seemed content to have us live there. I think most of this can stem from how tame we are, relative to other fraternal organizations on campus.”

Those first couple of neighborhood gatherings proved to be the launch pad for additional events. In 2017, Triangle opened up the house for a tour and a hamburger cookout on that big front yard. Local families from 15 different households showed up, along with most of the active members and – perhaps best of all – alumni who had been in residence during the court cases. The event was successful at shedding light on both sides of the earlier issue, and significant at bringing everyone together in good faith and goodwill.

Hall talks about that opportunity for the neighborhood to see first-hand the work Helfrey was doing on the property.

“Because the old house had not been properly maintained, Neal did a lot of interior renovations, selling off lots of stuff that had been left behind, replacing old stuff with new furnishings, refinishing the floor, painting. There were lots of updates to increase membership.

He did everything under the sun to create a good environment. It was a wonder to watch! Everyone was very impressed. We all loved what he tried to do.

“Neal was just such a positive represen-tative of the chapter. Great guy, so responsible in trying to take care of the house and model that for the guys. The neighbors now W W W. T R I A N G L E . O R G

try to support all of them during finals week with snacks. We make a concerted effort to get to know the Active Presidents and the guys we’ve worked with. We all make great neighbors now! It is truly an intergenera-tional, very diverse neighborhood. ”

There are more necessary improvements and upgrades needed for the house, and the chapter is working with Triangle Building & Housing Corporation to accomplish those goals within a fiscally-responsible and budget-conscious timeline. It is a journey that includes investment at the national level, a belief in the sustainability of the chapter, and open lines of communication every step of the way. Even longterm observers of the process freely acknowledge the impact of a good relationship between all parties involved.

Cooper, now serving as president of the Alumni Board, sums up the past experiences and the impact those have on the future. “I see the relationship continuing to grow, moving forward. It is my goal as Alumni Board President to express the importance of building these relationships. I am still very local, in graduate school at the University of Oklahoma. Since I am a five-minute drive from the house, I have made it a point to be there multiple times a month, if not multiple times a week...

Whenever my time as Chairman is complete, I plan on educating my successor about the importance of these relationships.”

The feeling of friendship and mutual support within a group is certainly a good definition of a fraternity. In the case of Triangle Oklahoma, it also defines an entire neighborhood. s
