Tom joined the Fraternity staff in 2016 and brings a wealth of knowledge to the team, having served over 30 years as a campus and fraternity professional, speaker, consultant and volunteer. Tom is a member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and served Phi Psi as a senior staff member, CEO of the national foundation and on its national council.

As the Executive Director, Tom works collaboratively with the Triangle Education Foundation and Triangle Building and Housing Corporation, implements strategies and tactics of the Fraternity’s long-range plans, and facilitates membership growth - both at existing chapters and expansion to new campuses. Rhonda Halcomb Director of Operations rhonda@triangle.org Hired in 1991 as a bookkeeper for the Fraternity, Rhonda Halcomb is the organization’s longest tenured employee. She was promoted to Director of Operations where she oversees the business aspects of the national organization, including finances, event registration, headquarter building operations, and human resources.

Contact Rhonda for assistance with all fee and membership related issues, including financial operations of the fraternity, questions about jewelry, National Fees, and replacement of ritual equipment, membership manuals, pins and badges, as well as address/phone/email changes, Chapter Eternal notifications, and pledge and initiation procedures.

Ariel Tarosky Director of Education & Communication ariel@triangle.org Ariel joined the Triangle staff in March 2015 as the Fraternity’s first ever Director of Leadership Programs.

As the Director of Leadership Programs, Ariel works towards developing a comprehensive educational strategy that suits the National Council’s strategic vision, supports, develops, executes, and assesses curriculum for educational programs, and manages the fraternity’s assessment initiatives for all educational programs.

Additionally, Ariel is responsible for the marketing and branding of the fraternity and oversees the Fraternity’s website, national magazine, and daily publications. Contact Ariel with assistance in educational programming, assessment, or any questions about branding or marketing.

Gary joined the Fraternity staff in May 2016 as the Fraternity’s Director of Chapter Development. Gary works with chapters and colonies to help them continue to develop as strong viable organizations.

He assists groups in maintaining Triangle Fraternity standards, operations, and ongoing personal and organizational development. Gary also is responsible for the coordination and implementation of the fraternity’s expansion process.

CJ joined the staff in August 2016 and is a brother from the Marquette chapter. As the Assistant Director, CJ develops colony expectations, assists in recruitment efforts, and performs on-campus visits.

CJ serves as a liaison to chapters and colonies, and local alumni organizations through on-site visits each year.

National President’s Angle

F

ifty years ago on May 7, 1967 I became a member of Triangle Fraternity. That’s almost half of Triangle’s 110-year history.

As with our society, there have been a lot of changes for fraternities in those 50 years. Among these is a dramatic increase in public expectations of fraternities.

Code of Ethics. We’ve raised our academic standards and developed the Melissa & John Gargani Academic U to help chapters maintain high academic standards.

First and foremost is an expectation of “do no evil”. Because of social media and the internet, any adverse incidents are widely broadcast and help foster a negative public perception of fraternities. In addition, schools have increasingly turned to punishing first and then figuring out the facts.

Recently, community service has become a major emphasis. Our chapters undertake numerous charitable tasks throughout the year. We have a basic expectation that every member will complete 10 hours of community service each semester. Several of our chapters have been working with Habitat for Humanity and we are working on rolling out a new national program at convention.

Triangle is proud that we’ve never had a hazing-related death We hold our members responsible through our Ritual, values and Code of Ethics. To be truthful, I am continually impressed by the high caliber of men who join Triangle. We’ve provided numerous educational resources and training for the three primary risk areas – binge drinking, hazing and sexual misconduct, areas of concern for all college students, not just fraternity men. We also have provided wellness training for mental health issues and will be providing information for men’s eating disorders. There are also expectations on the “do-good” side. First and foremost is academic achievement, which has always been a pillar of our

We completed two very critical programs last year and are rolling them out this year. One for chapters and one for brothers.

First is the Pyramid, which is an accreditation program for the chapters which for the first time sets standards for chapters and clearly lets them know what is expected of them and what is required to have a robust, thriving chapter. Second is the Journey, which is a comprehensive multi-year development program for our members which goes way beyond the pledge education program most of us experienced.

society’s expectations as well as our own, we aredeveloping additional programs and resources to support our chapters. Among these will be new programs to engage more alumni in mentoring and supporting our young men. I hope you will considering being one of those men.

How to

Build a Great LinkedIn Profile

W

hether you’re job hunting, gathering leads, or networking in your industry, having a professional, eye-catching LinkedIn profile is an excellent idea to make sure that you can be found by the right people at the right time. LinkedIn is not only the top website recruiters use to search for possible new hires and research potential interview candidates, but it’s also a way to connect with brothers from all around the country. Here are 10 tips to ensure that you are being found by recruiters and potential new employers, while increasing your professional circle.

Start with a professional photo. If you don’t have a professional head-shot, add that to your to-do list, and in the meantime go with the cleanest, most professional snapshot you have. Your profile is seven times more likely to be viewed if you have a photo attached.

Make your headline stand out. Use this area as your mini elevator speech and consider listing your specialties and speaking directly to your audience. If you want your profile to be searchable, include important keywords.

Fill out the “summary” field with your biggest achievements. This is the place where you can sell yourself and show a little personality.

Mention your qualifications, goals, and any relevant work.

Fill out as much of the profile as possible. That includes skills, volunteer associations, education, etc. This is the place to put all the interesting stuff that doesn’t fit on your resume, but paints you as a well rounded individual.

Keep your work history relevant. You don’t need to list every single job you ever had. Instead, only list the jobs that are relevant to your current career goals.

Use status updates to share industry-relevant content. This can help show recruiters that you are focused and in-the-know in your industry.

Ask for recommendations. Endorsements are great, but recommendations are the currency of the realm on LinkedIn. Reach out to past colleagues, managers, and ask that they write you a recommendation.

Be detailed. For each section of your work experience, list your responsibilities and accomplishments. Be honest, be specific, and use numbers when possible.

Don’t write big paragraphs. Break up your ideas into logical chunks and use single dashes or tildes for bullet points.

Link to other places you want people to find you online. If possible, showcase your work through photos or a portfolio.

And be sure to list your involvement with Triangle!

LOOKING FORWARD TRIANGLE’S PRIORITIES FOR 2017

by Tom Pennington, Executive Director t’s been an exciting and interesting first 100 days with Triangle and I continue to be honored to serve as Executive Director. I’ve worked closely with Randy Drew, Brian Jarman, and the rest of the Council to get up to speed with the people, programs, and processes that contribute to success. During that orientation, two things emerged as priority issues and they will be at the top of my focus.

The first is alumni engagement. We’re working to add a staff member this year to build and implement a program which will better inform and engage alumni. Alumni are essential to the fraternity’s long-term success with their contributions of time, talent, and treasure. Our program will seek to identify and involve more alumni to support chapters and to initiate more regional alumni activity.

You can help by seeking out or starting an area alumni group.

Regardless of your chapter loyalties, an area alumni group can be a valuable resource for networking and professional development. Whether to support your professional or social needs, a network of trusted, experienced technical professionals also can be a resource for our undergrads and something that distinguishes Triangle during recruitment.

Which brings up the second priority…

Growth – in current chapters and through expansion – is necessary.

We have too many groups with fewer than 20 men. A small size makes it difficult to be visible and relevant on campus and causes their few paying members to struggle in order to finance their chapter. We will work to provide better recruitment training and resources, an online and social media presence, regional recruitment “coaches”, and a clearer vision of what Triangle can offer young men.

During expansion planning we must continue to seek top campuses, with a significant alumni population in the immediate area, where the college embraces Greek life and where housing is affordable, if necessary for success. You can help! If you have contacts with top administrators, know current students, or are personally involved on the faculty or board of any great engineering campus where Triangle is not represented, let us know.

I’ve spent a lot of years in the fraternity/ sorority community, working with many organizations, and I believe that Triangle is positioned incredibly well for success.

We are financially stable, are represented at excellent institutions, attract a young man who is smarter and more focused than other groups attract, and we have thousands of loyal alumni around the world with great knowledge and experience.

If we are to achieve our goal of 50 chapters with an average size of 50 men by 2020, these are the two priorities that will get us there. I hope every member will answer the call, to be more involved and to join us as we move Triangle to a new level of performance and success!

Triangle Heads to

A

rizona State University is one of the fastest-growing universities in the country with an impressive reputation for innovation and student engagement. U.S. News & World Report has ranked Arizona State as the nation’s most innovative school in the country, ranking ahead of both MIT and Stanford. It should be no surprise then that when the opportunity presented itself Triangle selected the university as our next expansion project.

ASU has a vibrant fraternity and sorority community with over seventy Greek-letter organizations represented. The fraternity and sorority community has undergone a revitalization effort that is intended “to transform the community in order to create the premier fraternity and sorority experience in the country by being values-based, impact-driven individuals and organizations.” The community is driven by the values encouraging individuals and organizations to: Learn & Grow, Build Relationships, Give Back, and Do the Right Thing.

There are additional efforts to rebuild on-campus fraternity and sorority housing that will provide opportunities for chapters to live together and develop a stronger sense of community. There will be approximately 30 different housing units of various sizes for members of ASU’s Greek community. The newly designed village will incorporate a large common area building with meeting rooms, office space for governing councils, TRIANGLE REVIEW | SPRING 2017 | 10

large auditorium space, and mixed retail on the lower level.

Triangle staff are on campus meeting with student organization leaders, administrators, and alumni to help promote the Fraternity and recruit men who will make outstanding leaders for the new group. The effort of establishing a new group opens the possibility of accepting a wide range of different men from wellestablished campus leaders to first semester freshmen. A variety of experiences and interests will help make the organization as diverse and successful as possible.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED There are several ways that alumni and actives can aid in this effort. If you are an alumnus in the Phoenix area, your help is needed in serving as chapter advisors or mentors for our newest group. If you know of a student who you believe would be a good addition to our effort, you can send your recommendation to Gary Ballinger, Director of Chapter Development, at gary@triangle.org.

A Reflection on My First Year as Alumni President

I later realized it was a sense of self-reliance that was getting in the way and burning me out. I could tell that I was struggling, but my wife was the one to point out that I have to let people do more. I had to delegate more. So I started releasing more projects and the response from the organization has been great. As My communication style drastically changed throughout my first year as long as I communicate clearly, members are willing to take on the work alumni president. Within minutes I went from being an active alumnus, and succeed in their own way. The relief for me has been tremendous. leading committees and events, to being the leader of the entire organization. Convention History and Traditions Since 1909 Triangle brothers have come together at regular intervals for Triangle Fraternity’s National Convention. Chapters send at least two undergraduate and one alumni delegate to Convention in order to discuss the future of Triangle Fraternity, review the organization’s legislation, recognize distinguished undergrads, alumni, and volunteers, distribute national awards, and swear in Triangle’s National Council. National Convention also offers many educational sessions based on the principles of leadership, networking, etiquette, and professional development.

Who Should Attend?

All Triangle members are welcome to attend, but each chapter should send at least two undergraduate delegates and one alumni delegate.

How Can I Register?

Registration information will be sent to chapters, advisors, house corporations, alumni associations, and governing boards at the beginning of March 2017. Registration can be completed at www.triangle.org.

What Is Included In The Registration Fee?

The full-time registration fee includes room and applicable tax for the 19th through the 23rd and selected meals. If you can’t make Convention for the full time, you are welcome to attend on a part-time basis. Part-time attendees will pay a daily registration fee, plus the cost of any meals they would like to attend and any hotel nights that they will be staying.

Absolutely! The resort is made for families with two large swimming pools and a state-of-the-art spa. We will also be offering Saturday excursions to Sedona and Wet ‘N’ Wild Waterpark!

Convention is not only a time to elect the Fraternity’s leadership and participate in educational programming but it is a great opportunity to reconnect with brothers from all across the country. We have intentionally designed the 2017 Convention to allow for more brotherhood and socializing. We hope that you will join us!

National Coun National Council is Triangle’s all-volunteer board of directors consisting of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, six alumni Councilmen and the Immediate Past President. The Secretary, Treasurer, and Active Councilman positions are appointed annually. The President and Vice President are elected for one-year terms and three Councilmen are elected each year for twoyear staggered terms.

We have begun testing the Journey program which provides educational and personal development over the entire active experience. This would serve as a function of reporting progress towards our strategic goals as One Triangle to set up for our next strategic plan. Implement the next strategic plan in place by 2019 for 2025. I would be concerned about going out farther than that given our current needs to improve data and data quality as well as how much Fraternity life is continuing to change. Create a National calendar that helps govern our annual activities and requirements. A lot of this knowledge is tribal (i.e. not documented and shared regularly) or tracked. Having such a tool would ensure Council is meeting its obligations to our constituents in a timely and effective manner by driving agenda contents, sub-committee activities, and Council work-back plans. Establish alumni network goals. Recently, our National Councilman obligations and visits have been focused on Active chapter visits. While that is important, we have a strong opportunity to develop goals for each Councilman around alumni networking. Councilmen should have goals towards alumni development against our strategic plan to grow our alumni network.

Foundation Receives $100,000 for Elias Sabbagh Memorial Scholarship

by Aaron Girson, TEF Vice President Lewis (Lew) A. McDonald pur40 passed into Chapter Eternal on April 20, 2016. In reviewing his personal papers his children found several items he had saved from the Triangle Review regarding Triangle and long-time Purdue Chapter Faculty Advisor Elias Sabbagh. In recognition of the impact that Triangle and Professor Sabbagh had on Lew, the family connection to Triangle and Lew’s love for quality education, the McDonald family gifted $100,000 from the Lewis A. and Carol W. McDonald Charitable Trust to the Elias Sabbagh Memorial Scholarship Fund in the Triangle Education Foundation.

This gift will greatly increase the funds available for the Sabbagh Scholarship in coming years.

Lew’s father, Lewis McDonald ill07 was an early member of Triangle’s founding chapter at Illinois. Lew’s daughter Abby is a founder of Phi Sigma Rho engineering sorority.

TBHC REVAMPS PROGRAM PROPERTY IMPROVEMENT CONTEST OFFERS NEW INCENTIVES

I

n 2016, Brothers Pat McCarthy (pur86), Shawn Diedtrich (minn90), and Brad Kahn (tol07) set out to revamp the Chapter Improvement Contest to better allocate funds and incentivize the active chapters to improve their properties. What resulted is the newly branded Property Improvement Contest. In its previous form, the contest awarded small grants, typically in the amount of $250, to chapters who entered their respective improvement projects to the selection committee. The contest ran for 5 years and after the 2016 award was temporarily suspended as Brs. McCarthy, Diedtrich, and Kahn retooled the rules and scope of the contest.

Enter the new formation of the PIC. The hope with this newly revamped program is that chapters will be incentivized to invest in their homes and community regardless of the size, scope, or budget of their respective projects. The new format of the contest consists of two sources of funds: one source of small grants for various house projects, and one source for chapters to compete for a large monetary award.

The Small Grant Program will provide grants up to $500 for chapters to use to upgrade or improve their properties. These grants will be applied for projects that relate to life safety (e.g. installing security alarms or fire detection systems), property beautification (e.g. planting gardens, painting homes), or community improvements (e.g. installing playground equipment, involvement/sponsorship in FIRST robotics).

For the more ambitious chapters, the Project Award Program will award three monetary awards for the chapters with exceptional projects. Chapters can apply by submitting a written proposal of the project detailing timeline, budget, and project management strategy. If accepted, the chapters will receive an initial $250 grant to help start the project. Upon completion of the project, each chapter will submit a final report summarizing the work that was completed with lessons learned along the way. Of the completed projects, the best will be invited to either that year’s National Convention or Herbert Scobie Leadership School where they will present their projects to those in attendance. The PIC committee will then award a first, second, and third place prize to the appropriate projects which include monetary awards.

The details and specifics of the PIC will be announced during the 2017 National Convention in Phoenix, Arizona- so be on the lookout for that announcement!

The Nebraska Triangle House Corporation has been stewarding the resources of the dormant chapter and its facility since the chapter was closed. Building & Housing Executive Director Mike Fouts was invited in to help the house corp think strategically about building a short, medium and long-term plan for their facility at the University of Nebraska, currently being leased to Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity.

It is important to build a strategic plan that includes capital improvements, maintenance, upgrades, renovations and even replacement when needed. As in all real estate, location is everything and the Triangle facility at Nebraska is in a great spot.

Greater Than Yourself The Journey to Building a Better World

H

erb Scobie minn32 said it best, “In order to have a better world, we must first have a world of better men.”

Now, obviously we can create better men through our educational programs, through our brotherhood events, and through the values and Ritual exemplified in Triangle. But our best opportunity to create better men, and in turn, a better world is through the power of mentorship. Or to take it one step further, the principle of helping others to be “greater than yourself.”

We have all heard of the long-standing saying “knowledge is power”, but according to Steve Farber, author of Greater Than Yourself: The Ultimate Lesson of True Leadership - the only way for knowledge to truly lead to power in a person’s life is for that person to give it away.

Just as you have to create better men before creating a better world you have to start the process first with yourself. You have to have a very expansive sense of who you are. Your self-confidence has to be unshakable and unwavering. You have to understand to the very core of your being that relationships are not a zero-sum game. Your heart has to be big enough to care about another’s hopes and dreams at least as much as you care about your own. And you have to be getting better and better, and more competent, smarter, more experienced, more connected to others all the time.

The story gives character and life to a principle of truth that has existed for centuries: the more you lift others the higher you will go.

This concept comes to life through the greater than yourself (GTY) framework: •

Expand yourself: “You expand yourself in order to give yourself to others.” Shift your perspective from isolated to connected, from alone to interdependent, from me to us. Take a personal inventory of the things you do well, experiences and life-lessons that have propelled you to your

Give yourself: act instead of just watching others act or hearing about it in the news. Philanthropize your life. Invest in relationships with other people and be clear on your intentions to make a difference in the lives of others.

Promote their welfare, fortunes, success, and capacity for achievement. Give away your knowledge, connections, experience, advice, life lessons and confidence. Hold others accountable for their commitments.

The old saying “knowledge is power” is true, the problem is that most people interpret it to mean the hoarding of knowledge is power - if I have more knowledge than you, I win. The real payoff comes in the giving of knowledge, not the keeping of it.

Replicate yourself: pay it forward, and demand that those you teach pay it forward, as well. Ensure that your GTY efforts expand far beyond your own rela tionships. Challenge everyone you know to practice GTY in their professional and personal lives. Share your successes and failures with others so they can learn from your experience.

At the end of the day, it’s simply not enough to make others greater than yourself. It’s about making sure that the people you elevate are doing the same for others.

This is at the heart of brotherhood. Of fraternity. There aren’t many other organizations whose core mission is exactly this.

Think about it, your fraternity was created by a group of men who had similar goals and values and who wanted to make themselves, each other, and their campus better. Now, 110 years later and 28,000 members later the mission hasn’t changed, but now you have years and years of brothers at your disposal. Men who have lived the Triangle experience, men who are now CEOs, husbands, entrepreneurs, and fathers. A group of men who want to do good and strive to make the world a better place. If this idea of greater than yourself is true, think of the power that Triangle can have. If everyone took the time to find their GTY project Herb Scobie’s mission would be at the heart of everything that you do.

“I think mentorship is probably the best way we can live what we talk about as far as brotherhood being for life, not just while you are in school.” Said, Brother Mark Snyder minn91. Snyder continued by saying, “While I didn’t have formal mentors as an undergraduate through Triangle, there were older members who were very strong positive influences for me that I appreciate even now 20 years after I’ve graduated. Not every Triangle brother is going to serve on National Council or a chapter alumni board after graduating, but mentoring is something any of us can do if we make the choice to. We all have knowledge and experiences worth sharing.”

Give Yourself 1. Commit to a specific percentage of your weekly time that you will offer to your GTY project(s).

2. Be clear on your intentions to make a difference in their lives by promoting their welfare, fortunes, and success.

3. Invest in the relationship by sharing your personal inventory and discovering their hopes and dreams.

4. Give it all away by opening the floodgates and offering all of your knowledge, connections, experience, insights, confidence, tough and honest feedback.

Replicate Yourself 1. Make sure they understand that you expect nothing in return other than them taking on their own GTY project.

2. Challenge everyone you know to practice GTY in their professional and personal lives.

3. Share your GTY successes and failures with others so they can learn from your experiences.

So whether you are an active member on your executive board or an alumnus about to retire, start to think about who your GTY project can be. so that you can continue to fulfill the goal of Triangle, to create better men, and a better world.

3. Ask yourself what you can do more of to improve the quality and depth of your experience and knowledge.

4. Choose your GTY project wisely by focusing on someone that you trust, believe in, and who has drive, energy, and heart.
