PRESIDENT’S ANGLE The theme of this Triangle Review is “the story of you.”

These stories were written by members for members. Stories provide one important medium for us to share with one another. Sharing exposes us, and in turn, provides an environment in which trust may grow. It is in this environment of trust and vulnerability that our relationships, especially fraternal relationships, thrive. With that background, I wanted to share some of my story for my last President’s Angle.

I grew up in rural Indiana the only son of two hard working, loving, middle class parents. I was smart, inquisitive, and not all too athletically inclined. In fact, I went through school being somewhat a nerd. I enjoyed science, watched Star Trek, and collected comic books. I continued to find success in grade school but was never very popular. I struggled with self-esteem as I was sometimes made fun for being smart, nerdy, and overweight. Regardless, I chose to tackle the next chapter of life by attending Purdue University and majoring in engineering.

Going from rural Indiana to Purdue University was a dramatic change. My home county had a population less than half of Purdue’s. My dorm was twice the size of my high school. To say I was lost, was an understatement. It was during those initial weeks of trying to adjust, that I remembered the flier sent by Triangle Fraternity over the Summer. Roughly translated from almost 20 years ago, it offered a home away from home with friends who shared a similar major. It sounded like a good offer.

Shortly after pledging Triangle, I remember feeling a sense of confidence I had not fully experienced before. This confidence arose from the idea that I, for the first time, had brothers that would back me up. It also arose from the notion that I had a whole house of brothers who were like me. I had found many friends on the same journey to survive engineering. Even more importantly, I had found friends who were committed to me and my success for life.

I changed careers. I thank those brothers tremendously for helping me make that change. I wouldn’t be here without the brothers during my time as an active or an alumnus.

What I will bore you with is one of the realizations I’ve had over the years. Triangle gave me the resources and confidence to be everything I can be. Triangle gave me acceptance into a lifelong family even as a struggling, nerdy, athletically challenged freshman. I was accepted based on my shared values and actions. This acceptance has helped me help others.

There have been good times. I have been with brothers as they graduated, got their graduate degrees, and found their dream jobs. I have been with brothers as they married their partner. I have been with brothers as they celebrated the birth of a child.

There have been hard times. I’ve been with a brother as he struggled to cope after returning from deployment to Iraq. I have been with brothers as they faced depression and contemplated suicide. I have been with brothers as they divorced their spouse.

Through it all, Triangle was there for me and them. Triangle helped me succeed in every phase of my life during and after college. It helped me find confidence, learn to take risks, rely on others, and help others. Triangle brothers have been with me at every step to celebrate joining the fraternity, graduating from Purdue, getting my first job, finishing law school, and my election as partner in my law firm. Most importantly, Triangle brothers supported and accepted me as I came out to them and shared my long-term partner, Joey, with them.

While parts of my story are unique, I know other parts may ring familiar: lifelong family, unconditional support, help in hard times, and celebration in good times. All I can ask is that Triangle continues to do for others what it has done for me.

While this is my last time writing to you in the Triangle Review, I hope you will share your story with your brothers. I hope you will help keep Triangle the premier STEM brotherhood. We change the world when we change ourselves. Triangle provides the environment to help us achieve our very best. I wish you all the very best and look forward to working with you to build enduring friendships and create stories which bring honor to Triangle.

2019 Leadership & Training Weekend Has Best Attendance Yet, Despite Winter Storm ARIEL TAROSKY

A total of 163 active and alumni members, facilitators and guests braved the winter conditions this past January for Triangle’s annual officer training, making 2019 the largest attended Leadership & Training Weekend to date.

Luckily, the worst of the storm hit as chapter presidents, treasurers, recruitment chairs, member educators, service and philanthropy chairs, and advisors were already on-site in their cabins being trained on how to effectively lead their organizations.

This year’s LTW not only brought new attendance records, but it also brought newly developed curricula in two of its tracks: the Wakerly Service Learning Workshop—previously focusing on training around the Leadership Advantage program—now expanded to focusing on all facets of service learning; and the Lifestyle & Education Workshop— previously focused on new member education—now expanded to continuing member education and risk management & bystander intervention.

Triangle members learned and bonded through session tracks, downtime with brothers, round-table discussions around critical hot topics, capping the weekend off with T.J. Sullivan’s keynote, “Confronting the Idiot in Your Chapter.” It was a great and snowy weekend.

In today’s student affairs landscape – whether in student life or fraternity/sorority support – you can’t be successful without a strong grounding in health and safety concerns. Challenges abound on college campuses, where young men and women move from a state of almost total dependence to one of near total independence, where critical habits and choices about ethics, values and behavior are formed.

Triangle has an amazing track record of performance over the years.

As such, our liability insurance rates are some of the lowest in the fraternity world… but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t continue to review and improve current practices and introduce new programs when possible. Where the health and safety of our members and guests is concerned, all efforts have merit.

The Triangle Health and Safety Initiative is an effort to improve education, training and resources to support safer, healthier chapters and events. It combines philosophy, policies, education and programming to give our chapters the structure they need to operate more effectively and to reduce the chances for accident, injury or worse.

Working with leaders in the arena of risk reduction and safer programs, Triangle National Council approved a new philosophy position regarding the use of alcohol and other controlled substances.

From this important new statement, the policies and programs follow, so chapter leaders will have a clearer understanding of expectations and resources.

In addition, we have increased our investment in training programs for alumni volunteers, which will provide them the skills they need to work with our chapters and present full-chapter programs to limit risks in alcohol/substance abuse/misuse, sexual assault/misconduct 6

and hazing, with a new module coming out soon in mental health awareness. These programs are a part of our membership in J. R. Favor & Co, an insurance and risk management company in which Triangle has an ownership interest.

More than 25 Triangle alumni are trained in these health and safety workshops and are available to chapters that want or need education programs in these areas. Whether presenting to their own chapters or to chapters nearby, these trained facilitators are a valuable asset that can improve chapter performance in these areas – or in delivering the programs to campus fraternity/sorority communities. Each year, we plan to increase the number of trained facilitators available.

In addition, we are working with online vendor Plaid and their new Tightrope program of online health and safety education. This education course can be taken online and, once completed, will tag the student’s member record to show completion. Once the full course is completed, students would complete a short “refresher” course annually. That baseline of education and training for every undergraduate will help us continue our strong insurance track record.

The duties of National Council, HQ and our alumni ranks are to be clear on expectations, provide education on why the expectations are important, encourage and support chapter success, and intervene and enforce when things go wrong. This Initiative is a strong statement on expectations, with supporting education and programming to help make sure intervention and enforcement aren’t the bulk of our efforts.

The closest friends I’ve ever had are my Purdue Triangle fraternity brothers, and especially the ones from my 1958 pledge class. So, if I feel this way, why didn’t I spend time keeping in touch with them after graduation? The only excuse, although not a good one, is that career and raising a family got in the way.

However, once retired, I had no excuse. The problem seemed to be that I didn’t know where to find them. Fortunately, one of my pledge brothers, Chuck Lampman pur58, found me in 2012. Chuck had spent many years involved with Triangle scholarships and had access to Triangle’s address files. Chuck and I decided to contact our pledge class by email and phone to see how many would be interested in a reunion.

To our surprise, more than half of them were interested. The question was where and when should we meet. The question was resolved when we learned one of our pledge brothers, Mel Chiogioji pur58, was receiving the Wall of Fame award at the 2013 Triangle National Convention in Irvine, California. So that’s what we did.

The reunion in Irvine was one of the happiest times of my retired life.

Although we didn’t look the same after 52 years, we were the same guys we remembered. We had come from 9 different states and had significantly different careers. The biggest surprise was that the wives we had acquired since graduation became best of friends almost immediately even though this was their first meeting. There were 11 of us and we decided to make our get-together an annual event.

Since many of us liked jazz, we picked the annual August jazz festival in Sacramento, CA. Starting in 2014, we’ve attended the Sacramento festival each year. Because the Sacramento festival shut down after the 2018 event, we plan on going to the Monterey jazz festival this year in March. Not everyone has made it each year, but we usually have five or six couples. Several times we’ve also met in Naples, Florida, at one of the brothers’ winter home.

The 2013 convention was the first I had attended since the one in my junior year at Purdue. I was pleasantly surprised to see how well organized it was compared with my first convention. Due to this pleasant experience, several of us have also attended the 2015 and 2017 Triangle National Conventions. I was very impressed by the undergraduates who attended. I also met and exchanged ideas with Purdue Triangles who have graduated more recently from the last 20, 30, and 40 years. So, I’ve come to appreciate all the work the folks at Triangle’s national headquarters in Indianapolis do on our behalf.

My message to those reading this is to organize your own reunion with your Triangle brothers. It’s not hard to do, and the national headquarters will provide you with phone numbers and email addresses. All they need is the school and the year you were initiated. It might be the most fun thing you have done in years!

Clandestine Chemistry: My Life as an Illegal Steroid Cook BRANDON BAGWELL ok04

When I got into bodybuilding, I got into it for all the right reasons. A minor health crisis, followed by the passion that comes with getting results through diet and nutrition. As Socrates once said, “No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training”, and I was no amateur.

Chemistry was never my strong suit (being a computer science graduate), but I took great pride in applying engineering principles and the scientific method to self-experimentation.

I started using legal performance enhancers (e.g., prohormones) before they became scheduled (illegal) by the FDA. Once they became scheduled, it was a short trip down the slippery slope to using traditional steroids. I was a first hand witness to the power of enhanced endocrinology and was torn between using legal supplements that were dangerous, and illegal ones that were less so.

Within a few years, economics and our failed national policies on the drug war led to me brewing them at home.

Fortune favors the bold, at least for a while. What started as a mere hobby with compounding pharmacy ended up with a handful of paying customers. No, I wasn’t Walter White, but I wasn’t a saint either. When I got caught (as is inevitable in the illegal drug business, even for something as uncommon and non-violent as steroids), it tore me up.

Fortunately, my story has a happy ending. Steroids aren’t mentally addicting, so most of the hurdles of drug abuse never took root in me.

I channel my energy into writing and started my own business, Pill Press Books. In my journeys, I have interviewed countless users, dealers, cooks, and traffickers in an effort to understand their stories and motivations. I’m working with the substance abuse community to lobby for positive change – like syringe exchange programs and increasing mental health funding in my state. My first novel, American Dragon, is an unapologetic and graphic fictionalization of my personal experience and an homage to those I’ve lost to meth. Many were, you guessed it, engineers. Some, who have since passed away, I met and knew as an active over a decade ago.

The costs were very real. About thirty agents from various jurisdictions raided (yes, raided) my house. I did some jail time, and while I was able to escape a felony conviction and keep my job and civil liberties, it has led to interesting conversations when it comes to applying for new gigs. After all, how does one explain being a drug dealer on their federal tax forms? I also have very real and serious health implications from years of abuse of this seemingly harmless drug. I am halfway through a nearly decade-long ban imposed by the University of Oklahoma for enrolling for graduate school.

Why am I telling you this? Very simply for one reason.

I’m not the only one who has had problems with drugs, substance abuse, or criminal backgrounds, so it is important to talk about it openly. We need to wake up and be prepared for the hell drug use and our failed federal drug policy play in our colleges, communities, and, God forbid, chapters.

The reality is this : 80 million Americans have used a substance which is federally illegal. That’s nearly one in three. Policy is changing, but only so fast. Life expectancy for our current actives is less than that of our alums, most notably due to a nationwide opioid epidemic. Not to mention, even smart college kids do stupid things. Sure, we talk about alcohol ad nauseum but let’s be clear – the white elephant of drug use

From my interactions with Fraternity men inside Triangle and out, let me be frank. If anything will kill a brotherhood faster than financial problems, hazing, alcohol abuse, or sexual assault, it would be drug abuse. It isn’t the most common way chapters die, but it is in my mind, unquestionably, the most lethal. Once established, drug culture is pervasive and deadly. It also goes against so many of our Fraternal Values.

There is no shortage of people who need mentoring in this world, and working with at-risk individuals to capture their stories (and fictionalize them) has provided a wonderful balance to my life. Drug dealing is a narcissistic lifestyle and in helping others I have found prosperity. It has been therapeutic for them as well, enabling their emotions to vent. I am thankful to all the strangers and friends alike who have communicated personal challenges to me and allowed me to project them into the world of fiction.

After all, there are those too scared to attend a Narcotics Anonymous meeting.

Let me finish with this. If any of my Brothers, young or old, active or alum, near or far, are having troubles with addiction or the repercussions of it, please know that you aren’t alone.

One Member’s Journey to Fulfill Their Dream While Making Their Brother Proud LEE SIFFORD psb12

Since I was a boy, I have been fascinated with food, flavors, and scents. Something about the pure bliss visible on a person’s face when they first lay eyes on a meal they have been waiting for has always been something I’ve wanted to recreate time and time again. From the day I grew tall enough to see the stove-top, I have insisted on cooking dinner for the household. Once I entered 9th grade, I got a job in the local restaurant and began taking cooking classes at school. After conversing with some of the chefs and managers of the restaurant, I ultimately decided that a career in engineering would suit me better than a career as a chef. The long hours spent on your feet, limited time with your family, and the all-but-certain poor diet consisting of unhealthy choices were all primary factors in this decision. While I did end up going to Penn State Behrend in pursuit of a Mechanical Engineering degree, the concept of owning my own restaurant always remained a lifetime goal, or bucket list item, in the back of my mind.

By the age of 18 he had already become a supervisor in the kitchen where I worked, surpassing me on the totem pole. When I returned home for the summer breaks, Eric was my boss, often watching and critiquing me more than he did with other employees. While this working relationship might seem strange to some, I enjoyed it as my brother was my role model from a work ethic perspective. It was no coincidence he climbed the ladder of success so quickly.

What started as a hobby has quickly evolved into somewhat of a second job for us.

With many of our family members and friends delighted with the beers— and hard ciders— we have been producing, the notion of starting up our own brewery has gone from a fantastic idea to a reality. Using the leadership skills honed by my time as an active in Triangle, I have implemented regular meetings to help establish goals and maintain the progress of the soon-to-be brewery. With a business plan in development and over a dozen battle-tested, critic-approved recipes in the book, my dream of owning my own establishment could come to fruition as early as next year. When I went to school I was a nerd... and not the charming kind found in some movies or TV shows. I wasn’t sure how to live in the world. I had consciously thought of myself as a girl since I was 6, but I came from a relatively strict religious background where I didn’t feel I could just be me. Besides, things were not exactly explained to me. The worst thing in the world, according to everyone around, including movies, literature, etc. was to be a F----(homosexual). The differences between sexuality, gender, gender identity, etc. were never explained to me, let alone the people I was interacting with, and only recently has the wider public gotten any chance to learn about these ideas.

Since I spent my entire childhood fearing that I would embarrass my family if anyone found out, I just made believe I was a boy and wound up avoiding girls AND boys altogether. I was a mess by the time I found myself at a Pledge Night for a Fraternity! I only went because I thought I would get free food. Instead I found Brothers who said being smart was good, and that I would be welcome, despite being incredibly awkward. I can’t believe I pledged, let alone that I was accepted as a Triangle.

Growing up I avoided doing anything that might be considered girl-ish, but I was terrible at being boy-ish. Avoiding girlishness included anything to do with my Mother. Everyone else considered this normal. I’m ashamed that this led me to not being there for my Mom when she needed me. So I didn’t learn a lot of things that other girls were learning... like, for example, washing dishes. But at the Fraternity house I learned ... to minimize the use of resources, clean the water solubles first, like glasses, then the greasy items... it was logical and scientific! I learned to be cooperative with other people. This was a change for me since I had minimized interactions with all people while growing up. At Triangle I saw real friendships develop among my Brothers, and I saw relationships between my Brothers and their dates. I had never been on a date before joining the Fraternity. - School taught me science... Triangle taught me about positive human relationships.

After school, I was on my own, and still thought I was crazy, ... not like everyone else. I even tried, but failed to kill myself; but some very kind strangers took me in, and cared for me for a while - which helped me see how important it was for me to live.

Among many influences, these people that totally accepted me, studying more of the world, and my Fraternity experiences, I felt that a good life, even if it wasn’t a happy one, was possible. Eventually, I got a good job with my degree. It took a few years, and meeting some more wonderful, accepting people. I eventually learned enough about myself and other people like me, to make some difficult, but necessary choices about my life.

I’m now married, without children. I do consulting and a lot of volunteer work. Not that I have no problems, but being alive, I feel like a human, living in sisterhood. But I want to thank you, my Brothers, too. Finally I have friends, living a relatively calm life, and I believe that I am doing good things.

How One Member “Engineered” His Way To Weight Loss TOM CHAREK cin01

Life moves so quickly that we don’t realize the short cuts taken in our everyday lives. For me it was a slow climb in weight due to poor eating habits. I’m the guy who snacked at the office and went to business lunches not counting any calories. It’s September 12th 2018 and I’m 220 pounds with a loving wife and three kids five and under.

I looked in the mirror and realized I’m no longer the person I wanted to be, I wasn’t on stable ground with my health even though the rest of my life was more blessed then I ever deserved. At 7:15am that day I made the choice to be a better person. I went to my wife who already was eating well and working out and made a commitment to change.

The first week was the hardest. When I would normally snack at the office, I would now drink water. Water was always next to me during the work day keeping me full. At lunches I would now order a salad with chicken. It was a monumental change for me and people started to notice. Dinner consisted of a clean healthy meal. I forced myself not to snack late at night. I remember picking up a travel size bag of Cheetos after dinner one night. I looked at the bag and could almost taste the cheesy goodness. I stood at the pantry staring at the bag. Would this moment be when I fell back into my cycle or could I be the person my kids think I am? No one would know if I ate that bag or not, it was only one bag how bad could it be? I put the bag back and walked away.

The first week I was hungry all day every day but I ate enough to be healthy according to the math.

After the first week things began to change, I wasn’t hungry all day but still late at night. I had to choose to snack or not. The single handful of chips every night equals a pound added every month. Every night I thought about the math and chose to skip the empty calories. The routine changes and convincing your body that you’re doing the right thing is a mental challenge that you have to choose to endure. It’s easy to slip and knowing others have done it helped me get through.

By October 9th, 2018, I was down to 210 pounds, I couldn’t see a change in my body but I knew I was on the right track. I began working out a few days a week for twenty minutes. The hunger had subsided and the routine of eating healthy was set in stone. I’d always been a numbers person and sticking to the math helped motivate me. Ten pounds in a month seemed so far away on September 12th but now it was a goal heading to November. I knew the holidays were coming and with it all the treats. If I was going to stick with it, I had to see results before Thanksgiving.

I started to track what I ate with the app MyFitnessPal and counted meals. It helped motivate me to stay on the right path. On November 14th I was down to 186 and people began noticing the weight loss. The hunger during the day was gone and snacking after dinner was all but nonexistent. As a family we’d fallen into a routine of eating balanced nutritious meals. I like to think we’d broken the vicious cycle of being short on time and going to get fast food.

My wellness checkup with the doctor found all my vitals were in normal ranges, he was happy with the progress I made and helped explain the challenges I’d experience moving to the end of the year.

Thanksgiving to Christmas was the hardest time to lose weight. Treats were plenty at the office and parties always include ample food plus drinks. My wife was a saint and kept our snacking to a minimum and we were able to prevail. I ended 2018 at 174 pounds and turned the page to a new year on a positive note. We’ve continued to keep our routine of living well and enjoying life.

As of February 3rd, I’m at 167 pounds, down 53 pounds from September 2018. It’s been a challenge to say the least but the support structure in my life made it possible. Reading other people’s stories on their journey helped motivate me to continue on mine. Looking back the single item that made me lose the weight is falling back to the math. I simplified my eating habits to a math equation every day and it worked. The single handful of chips equaled a pound of fat added every month. The large fries instead of the medium equaled a pound of fat a month added. It all adds up and doing the math every day helped break the ugly cycle I had fallen into.

I think our life experience in this fraternity binds us together and my story may help a few people overcome their eating cycle also. I’ve never told the story of how hard it was getting started and doubting myself staring at the Cheetos. Be the person your kids think you are.

Q: How old were your kids when you joined Triangle?

A: Never tried to push or influence them either way. Always assumed they would go to college, but it was always a consideration as a financial proposition. I began saving for college for Ian the day after he was born.

Also, my parents contributed to funds for the boys to pay for their college.

I raised my kids always telling them “you can do whatever you want, but I’m only paying for college, the rest or anything else is on your own”.

Q: How much did you influence them along any of those lines?

A: Again, it was always a cost-benefit proposition. If they went to college, it would be paid for. If they wanted a good career, a good job, then they should pursue engineering, it just made sense. I think it was natural since both parents had STEM backgrounds, but we never really pushed them toward it. As for college, when Ian was in high school, we visited Illinois, but the out-of-state tuition was just too expensive. Didn’t make sense financially. Then, after Ian started at OU, the 2nd year, they changed the administrative policies and children of faculty were given tuition waivers and other discounts that made it even more financially-responsible to choose OU. Q: Was it fulfilling for you that they chose those pursuits? Can you describe this feeling?

A: Definitely proud of them, definitely rewarding, definitely fulfilling.

I can honestly say I didn’t push them to Triangle itself, but just showed them the benefits of Greek Life in general, as an academic support system which is necessary for Engineering, and as a means of social and personal 14

A: Very rewarding, very fulfilling. Don’t know that I thought about it so much in those terms of Triangle Legacies, but, I’m happy they are happy and happy with the decisions they’ve made. Maybe it’s not the same for me as if I had joined as a student, since that age (18-22) is more formative, as opposed to when I was at Illinois. When I was at OU, I was already a fully formed adult with a different perspective. So there’s not that shared experience.

Q: Is there any marked difference in your relationships with them? “Brothers” vs. “father-son”? Any pros and cons?

A: No, not really. I mean, we’ve all been through the Ritual, and there’s a shared bond there, but if anything my role as Advisor versus. being a Brother was kind of a problem that I tried to address. It’s been only positive. On the one hand, they were already more “familiar” with college and college life, since they were used to coming up to the lab and working with me in junior high and high school.

Q: What made you proudest, as a father? Seeing them be an officer/leader in the chapter, or just seeing them join as a fellow member?

A: Was really proud of them being officers. Of course, if you were to ask them, they’d probably both say “Dad wanted me to be President”, but being leaders, officers, even vice president (Nate), was an achievement and positive learning experience for them. Also, was really proud of Ian pursuing graduate school, and of course going to Illinois, which I think he always wanted to do.

What Does it Mean to Be a Dad?

What does it mean to be a “Dad”? I think the meaning of the word is very personal and varies greatly between individuals. Every family’s dynamic is different. There is not any one particular way of parenting that is the best. Each person/couple needs to determine how they want to raise their children for themselves. Our family followed a very traditional model – I worked outside of the home while my wife took care of the family. I was the primary “provider” while my wife was the primary “caregiver”. I acknowledge that we were very fortunate to be able to do this. Additionally, many people do not want to structure their families in this manner.

I know the happiest days of my life were the day I married my wife and each of the births of our four children. I married my college sweetheart when I was 22 years old. Our first child, Christopher, was born when I was 24 years old. Talk about having to grow up fast. In the span of just three years, I went from being a care-free senior in college to pursuing my career in a full time job, being married, buying a house, getting our first dog, and being a first time father. (Okay – I don’t know that I was ever care-free.) Christopher was not only our first child, but he was also the first grandchild on both sides of the family.

All of a sudden, I had a new job – being a father to my son. The questions that keep popping into your mind are: What should I be doing?

Am I doing this right? What will happen thirty years from now if I do it wrong? Eventually, you learn that parenting is often a simply doing what you think is best or correct for the situation.

Our second child, Matthew, was born three years later. You learn very quickly that each of your children is very different from the others. It even starts at birth. Where Christopher was born screaming, we swear Matthew was born with a smile on his face.

Some of you may know Matthew. Matthew joined Triangle Fraternity at the Pitt Chapter while I was serving as National President. At the time, I was living in Houston. I was fortunate to be able to surprise him and attend his initiation.

Our third child and only daughter, Sarah, was born three years after that.

Having a daughter gives you a sense of respect and admiration for women that every man should have.

After a brief hiatus, our fourth child, Conrad, was born 11 years after Sarah. One advantage of being older when your child is born is that you tend to not sweat the small stuff like you do when you are a first time father at 24 years old. The questions stay in your mind but they are much easier to handle.

In my opinion, the key responsibility of any father is to “be there” for his children. This basically means that your children need to know that you truly love them, will help them when you can, will worry about them, and will work to adjust their thinking when they make a mistake. One of the hardest things for me to do as a father is to allow my children to fail.

I have a saying that I call the great parenting paradox – you want your children to be independent but you also want them to do exactly as you say. The biggest thing I want for my children is to be happy. Fatherhood provides a feeling of purpose and continuity. You can no longer think solely about how something might impact you. You also need to think about the ramifications for your children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, etc. By the way, none of these change as your children become adults.

Earlier, I discussed the happiest days of my life. I missed one. The birth of our grandson last year is in there too. The joy of seeing your son become a father is almost indescribable. Who knows, maybe Ambrose will become a third-generation Triangle in 18 years!

Triangle Group at the University of Washington Struggles, Then Succeeds MATTHEW JONES uw18

It is amazing how entire portions of your life can change with the answer to a single yes or no question. In January of 2015 one of my senior capstone partners, Jared, approached me and asked if I wanted to join a STEM fraternity, he called “Triangle.” I do not know how he was introduced to the organization, but he saw the need for it on our campus and wanted to establish one here. At the University of Washington there is little engagement between students of different majors, and as you become more absorbed into your major your friend group becomes more than your immediate classmates. Jared recognized the need to bridge this gap, and Triangle would be his way of doing so. Triangle would be the community our university needed that would bridge the gap between the science, engineering, and architecture majors, providing friendship and support among those in other academic tracks. Jared wanted to assemble a group of fifteen guys by the end of the school year, so we could apply to become a colony. Hearing him tell me this with passion in his voice, coupled with agreeing with Triangle’s value and need, convinced me quickly to say “yes” and join.

Engaging with people came easily to Jared, and he quickly made connections with Triangle National, as well as campus groups such as the College of Engineering and the local Phi Sigma Rho chapter.

We ended spring quarter by hosting a barbecue for area Triangle alumni.

Jared was the driving force for getting the group started, but there was a problem: he, along with most of us guys, graduated that spring and left UW. We ended that year with five men.

With no communication or organization since the last spring, a member named Alex became the de-facto leader. He scheduled a meeting at the start of fall quarter and four guys came, including a new guy—Aaron, one of Alex’s house-mates. The next meeting fewer showed up. Quickly we shrunk to where it was just Alex and me, president and head of recruitment, respectively. But after our second recruitment fair it went down to just me.

When Alex told me he was quitting I felt a great sense of loneliness. I was now alone in this endeavor, no one else wanted to help start Triangle. I sent Aaron an email letting him know that the plan to establish Triangle had effectively died, but I had fun spending time with him and hoped we could hangout again. He was interested, but clear that he was too busy to help restart Triangle. Two freshmen also followed up with me and ended up joining. I made many leadership mistakes that year, and not engaging our freshmen was a large one – they both quit by January. I spent the rest of the academic year deciding what I wanted this group to become.

I knew that my life would become much easier if I stopped trying to start this fraternity. I asked myself “Why then, did I not give up? What value did I see in persevering to create this organization that refuses to stay together?” I spent much time pondering these questions both alone and with two alumni, Sam and Tom. The three of us met monthly for coffee at a Starbucks near the university to talk about Triangle; they shared their college experiences and taught me more about Triangle, giving me advice on how I could recruit more men. These meetings kept my hopes alive, their encouragement and support were the last things keeping me from quitting. After the two freshmen left, I was unable to recruit another member. We ended that year with two men.

I kept in contact with Aaron over the summer and came into the new year dejected from the previous year’s failures, but still trying to maintain hope that others would be able to share my vision for Triangle. I didn’t attend the first student fair, but I rallied myself and made it to the second, telling myself that if no one there was interested then I would give up. At that fair I met Nick and Chase, who each saw value in joining Triangle in their own way. Others began to join, but ultimately left. Eventually most of the members remaining were friends whom Nick had brought on.

We held meetings that year, mostly just to play card games; Exploding Kittens was our favorite. We also did a lot of small events at the Quad, the dorms, and Aaron’s new apartment. Most of our time was spent developing our sense of community, united with the common goal of bringing Triangle to UW. Our efforts paid off, and by the end of the year to we were an interest group. We ended that year with fifteen men.

I graduated with my master’s degree over the summer but remained in Seattle and stayed active in the fraternity’s development. Before graduating, I created a rudimentary executive board and decided who would be most suitable for each role. That summer we saw a repeat of years previously, while we had fifteen men before break, only eight returned the next quarter. These eight men who remained agreed to the change in structure and Nick became the next president. He took his role seriously and put all his effort into making Triangle grow. During initial recruitment only three freshmen joined. However, these three freshmen started recruiting their friends, most notably a freshman named Cameron who brought in many friends from his dorm floor. In no time we were back up to fifteen members again. We started hosting more ambitious events, including a Founders’ Day barbecue with area alumni.

To make all these events happen, we developed an administrative structure that took charge of planning recruitment and internal events. For spring break eight of our guys went on a road trip down the west coast to go camping and visit the Triangle chapters at UCLA, UCSD, and UCI. Visiting these chapters showed our group what Triangle could become. At the end of their trip, they visited the UCI chapter. Despite it being finals week, nearly everyone from their chapter showed up to meet “these SPRING 2019 | TRIANGLE REVIEW

Washington guys.” These eight men returned to Seattle inspired to make our chapter happen.

In January 2018, Nick and I decided it was time to start new member education so we would be ready to initiate when the time came. There was resistance at first, but they stuck with it, even coming to enjoy reading passages of Everyman together at the end of each lesson.

Everyone who went through this class would become part of our first pledge class. In the meantime, we recruited more men for our second pledge class. We ended that year with twenty-one men.

We came into this school year strong, buoyed from being recognized as a colony a few weeks before the quarter began. In September, we recruited a new pledge class of nine. In October of 2018, nearly three years after Jared had approached me, I was finally initiated into Triangle Fraternity along with 15 other men. The area alumni conducted the ceremony, led

by National Councilmen Merle Newlon lou73 and Ian Richardson ucsd17.

This past quarter, more than any, I finally feel like my efforts are a success. As I watch the fraternity burst with life, bringing in new people, hosting events, and making memories, I can’t help but think this is the vision I had in mind. We are no longer one step away from failure; we are thriving, adding members seemingly all the time. We are actively searching for a permanent house, creating new memories, planning formal elections, and making the long-term decisions needed to be a stable and prospering organization. As of now we have thirty-seven men.

Starting our fraternity chapter was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but it is also one of the most meaningful. When I accepted Jared’s request on that otherwise insignificant day in January I had no clue how that one decision would change my life’s direction and make me the man I am today. I feel proud as I see my fraternity maturing and taking form without me. I see the men I’ve known since their freshman year step down from leadership roles and become the new advisers, training those who come after how to be successful. As I prepare to leave Seattle to begin the next stage of my life, I go knowing that the fraternity is left in good hands and will prosper long after I leave.

Graduation Is Just The Beginning One Alumnus’s Reflection of His Journey Traveled

ROBERT CAMPBELL msu57 I graduated from Michigan State (BS Civil Engineering) in 1960. My preparation for college was 3 years in a rural high school with 14 in my graduating class. I studied plane geometry in the summer after high school as preparation for majoring in engineering. Triangle Fraternity was a wonderful development experience for a socially inept young man from the sticks of upstate Michigan.

I met Nelda, the lady of my life, in August after returning from the wedding of a fraternity brother, and married her in May of 1961. I was working at a civil engineering firm on the design of an early part of the interstate highway system when I received notice that I was being drafted into the US Army. My whole career direction changed when I received orders at the end of 8 weeks of basic training to report to Blast and Shock Division of the Defense Atomic Support Agency in the Pentagon.

At the end of my 2 years in the army, which included duty at the Nevada nuclear test site where I did field engineering work and saw the most powerful nuclear test on the continent (100 kiloton cratering test, code name SEDAN) I got a job in the structures lab at Avco Research and Advanced Development (later Textron) in Wilmington, MA. That company developed the technology to bring the warheads from intercontinental missiles back to earth. I worked on testing Minuteman reentry vehicle structures and the heat shield for the Apollo Command Module that brought the astronauts back from the moon. I designed a 2-megawatt heat lamp system that tested to failure a heat shield that the design group didn’t think was possible. It also caused the local electric company to pay us a visit about 15 minutes after we ran the test.

My 37-year career at Avco/Textron was an adventure in engineering and learning new things. I worked on design and operation of a sea-water desalting system that was based on recovering pure ice crystals from sea water brine, rocket motors and ordnance devices used in decoys for strategic missiles, and many other aspects of advanced weapon development. I was the chief engineer of the reentry system of the Peacekeeper 10-warhead missile system and of an anti-armor cluster bomb that was used in the last Iraq War. Everything was new and life-learning was an essential part of the job. I even invented a system for de-spinning multiple warheads dispensed from a tactical munition dispenser (US Patent 4,264,045) while sitting in my chair watching the evening news.

Our careers are only part of the adventures of life. Nelda and I have traveled in all 50 states and several countries. Our two sons graduated from Virginia Tech where one played football and our daughter became a nurse who worked in Africa for 10 years and has traveled to around 40 countries.

We had a daughter who died of a brain tumor at 9 years old. Sometimes, not all adventures work out as we hope; but you must continue to move forward in your journey. We now have 5 grandchildren, ages 8 months to 14 years. We are retired in Salem, NH still living in the house I built in 1964.

The move to New Hampshire provided an opportunity to get involved in a new community with a “Town Meeting” form of government. I served for about 15 years on the planning board, 6 years on the Board of Selectmen (similar to a town council), and on several committees related to infrastructure projects.

I take courses at the University of New Hampshire to get continuing education units required to maintain my professional engineer license. It was fun participating in a class that included seniors in engineering. The professor had each of the 3 grad students in the class prepare and present special topics on sustainability engineering.

I still do a little engineering associated with a drinking water treatment system used to meet the EPA surface water treatment rules where lake water is the only available source.

Our college education and experience prepares us for the adventures of our career and the adventures of life. We never know where life is going to lead us. And we never stop learning.

Triangle Education Foundation: Campaign for Triangle Update

AARON GIRSON The successful Campaign For Triangle wrapped up in July 2017 and the gifts are having a growing impact on the programs available to Triangle actives and chapters. Donors’ gifts to the Campaign For Triangle have made the following possible: Chapter Endowment Funds Over $135,000 in grants are available to thirty chapters reaching 78% of the active membership. Chapter Endowment Fund grants send members to leadership programs, provide improvements to educational spaces in chapter houses, fund educational resources for chapters and support chapter service and philanthropic endeavors. This is new funding that was not available prior to the Campaign for Triangle’s Chapter Endowment Fund initiative.

Expanded Support and Recognition of Academic Success Online Training is available for all Academic Chairmen through the Melissa & John Gargani Academic U initiative.

The Kahlert Foundation Academic Excellence Awards now provide $5000 annually in awards for chapter scholastic success and improvement.

Expanded Scholarship and Financial Aid programs that grow annually, with more than $102,250 available in 2019, up from $65,000 in 2015.

Director of Education This position, funded through an endowment, has positively impacted the development, delivery and assessment of leadership and educational programs that reach all chapters. New funding of the Director of Education position and the following programs is now more than $100,000 annually. Since the addition of this position the following programs and initiatives have been created: The Larry & Judy Garatoni Building Better Men Program The expanded Steven L. Miller Presidents’ Leadership Academy The Journey Membership Development Program The Everyman New Member Education Program FIRST Robotics Service Learning Initiative Countless on-site member education opportunities In total, more than $275,000 in increased support presenting new opportunities to every active member is already in place as the result of the donors who made gifts during the campaign. Program support will continue to grow as commitments to the Campaign For Triangle are fulfilled.

TRIANGLE BUILDING & HOUSING CORPORATION 2019 - 2020 Board Elections

The Triangle Building & Housing Corporation’s Leadership Team is an all-volunteer board of directors consisting of a chairman, secretary/ treasurer, assistant secretary, and two directors. Every year, members of the Fraternity have the opportunity to elect a Director for the TBHC. Director terms last for five years. This year the elected Director will begin his term July 1, 2019 and will conclude on June 30, 2024.

Nominated for Director | Richard F. Beaubien, PE Term Length: 5 years Employer Managing Director at Beaubien Engineering Biography Brother Beaubien was previously Transportation Department Head at Hubbell, Roth & Clark Consulting Engineers for more than 20 years.

He received bachelors and masters degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan. His employment experience includes five years as a Highway Engineer with the Federal Highway Administration and fourteen years as the Transportation Department Head for the City of Troy, Michigan.

He is a Registered Professional Engineer in Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, Florida, and California. He has been certified as a Professional Traffic Operations Engineer and a Road Safety Professional by the Transportation Certification Board in Washington, DC. He is a Past International President of the Institute of Transportation Engineers. He received the Institutes Marsh Award for Distinguished Service.

He is a Past President of the Intelligent Transportation Society of Michigan, and he received their Outstanding Service Award. He chairs the Southeast Michigan Regional Transportation Operations Coordinating Committee.

His Triangle experience includes service as undergraduate and alumni President at the Michigan Chapter. He has served on National Council, and as Triangle National President. He has been awarded the Triangle Service Key. He has served on the Triangle Building and Loan Fund, and he currently serves as Chairman of the Triangle Building & Housing Corporation.

PROPERTY IMPROVEMENT CONTEST OBJECTIVE To encourage Active Chapters to undertake improvement projects in their Chapter Houses and/or communities. Project examples could be, but are not limited to, such things as improving life safety (fire safety, security, accessibility), general home improvement projects (landscaping, paint, room remodeling, bike racks, flooring, LED lighting, etc.) and community improvements/involvement (playground equipment, FIRST Robotics sponsor/volunteer).

GRANT AMOUNTS Grants totaling up to $10,000 per year will be disbursed in the form of payment to your national account based on the following: • Total number of project proposals submitted • Estimated costs of proposed project • Quality of proposal and the project • Impact of the project

There you will find information on the contest and how to submit your proposal.

Tip: Applications should detail the improvement (pictures and drawings are encouraged), the estimated costs, the time-line, and a list of the individuals performing the work. Please include the chapter’s and project’s primary contact. Permission from the owner of the property is also required.

By entering the TBHC Property Improvement Contest, the Chapter warrants the information provided is complete and truthful. Failure to provide complete and truthful information or to mislead the Contest Committee in any way, or to not complete the work as described will be grounds to deny an award and prohibit subsequent submissions at the Committee’s and TBHC Board’s sole discretion. Should the Chapter have received any award based on incomplete, misleading, or false information or if the work as described is not completed, the Chapter shall be required to immediately refund the full award to TBHC. The individual submitting the application represents and warrants that it has the authority to bind the Chapter according to these terms.
