THE MAKING OF THE MAKERS SPACE
Planning for the Maker Space started early during the initial
fundraising outreach by National. With a vision to support brothers in their pursuit of STEM educations, the Maker Space concept became an obvious choice as a house amenity. Mark Tolliver initiated the Maker Space idea and donated generously to make it a reality. We are grateful for his vision and financial support. Our new makerspace will be a unique and innovative example of how we’re planning for the future and hopefully be a compelling reason for new members to join Triangle.

clean. We need all of our existing 10,000 sf for bedrooms, collaboration, dining, and recreation spaces, so we added a 1,000-square-foot wing to house the Maker Space. With 20+ years as a general contractor, I've had plenty of experience picking apart electrical designs, so I knew we needed plenty of power receptacles and lots of circuits. Due to the new electric HVAC system (VRF Heat Pump), we were already upgrading the electrical service to 120/208 volt, 800 amp, three phase power, so we allocated a 225 amp panel with multiple 208 volt plugs for shop equipment. When it came time to select woodshop equipment, I reached out to the only guy I knew who could help. Imran Mohamed built an impressive personal workshop, making him the perfect consultant.
slop sink and an eyewash station. The space has a large overhead door facing a gently pitched ramp to the parking lot to allow large materials in and out. We envision the electronics workshop as a space where software meets hardware. Robotics has been discussed too. The shop has several 3D printers, hot air soldering stations, an oscilloscope, variable power supplies, multimeters, an amp clamp, Adruino/Raspberry Pi micro-computers and a CAD/rendering workstation running Revit/CAD/Rendering software. With 100 square feet of work surface that's equipped with antistatic/grounding devices, there's plenty of room for multiple people to work at the same time.

We’re capitalizing on readily available free/low-cost student-licensed software. Most of the house has highspeed WIFI and this space will have cabled data drops for gigabit speed and low-latency LAN/WAN connectivity. We have a 1 Gbps x 50 Mbps LAN and plan to upgrade to 1 Gbps x 1 Gbps fiber in a few years.

SAFETY FIRST. Safety and security have been major considerations through the entire planning process. The way to ensure zero accidents is to hire a local workshop professional who will write, implement and enforce safety and security protocol and procedures. We envision a curriculum with seminars, workshops and project oversight. Much of the start-up costs have been funded by a generous grant from Triangle National, and we hope that other chapters will use what we learn. Security is also a high priority. We have a full-featured burglar alarm from ADT complete with glass-break, motion and door-open detectors. It reports to a local central station that will dispatch the police in case of alarm. -Ward Hand, ill92

GIVE BACK TO ACTIVES

W ith the beginning of the school year approaching, it is now more important than ever to develop our members and to prepare them for professional events such as career
fairs. As an alumnus, you can give back to the house with your time through "alumni talks." You are encouraged to pick a topic of interest and share the invaluable knowledge you have gained in the industry. We are also looking for alumni interested in giving hands-on workshops on soldering, welding, or woodworking to develop members' skills as we get familiar with our new makerspace. You can contact me at rrocil2@illinois.edu to set one of these sessions up. - Ryan Rociles ill21
