PRESIDENT’S ANGLE “What makes Triangle unique?”

This is a question I have often reflected on throughout my journey in this organization. In my earlier years, the differences we have with other Greek organizations on the surface are what stood out. We have a symbol that is different from other Greek organizations, the “delta T.” Our name, Triangle, is not that of Greek letters. Finally, we limit our membership acceptance to men in the fields of Engineering, Architecture, and the Sciences.

As the years went on and my involvement in Triangle grew deeper, I started to ponder this question not from an “outside looking in” perspective, but more on the “insider looking in.” I thought less about what made us unique on the surface, but what brings Triangle members together to be better. What do we all have in common that makes this organization unique?

We limit our acceptance to engineers, architects, and scientists.

Yes, we all pursued studies in Engineering, Architecture, and the Sciences (at least at first), but not all of us are engineers. Not all of us are architects. Not all of us pursued a specific branch of the Sciences. There are many members that changed majors during their collegiate studies or pursued careers outside of their studied professions that fall outside of our acceptance criteria.

STAFF CONTACTS When I was an Active member, the Ritual was the thing we would do two to three times a year for our new pledge classes.

We didn’t think more or less of it at the time other than it must be kept secret. When was the last time you participated in our Triangle initiation Ritual? Have you ever sat down and just read the Ritual? When was the last time you had a discussion with a fellow Brother about what the Ritual means to you and how you want to live your life? When was the last time you stopped and reflected on the Oath and the meaning behind the words we are all asked to recite? We hold our Founders in such high esteem for their actions to found our beloved Triangle, but often do not stop to think what they truly left behind: a lighted and Stable path as we take our journey through life in a sometimes dark and ambiguous world.

As I begin to conclude, I have three things to ask of you: Ask #1: Make some time to honor the Ritual. It has contributed more to your character than you may realize. Actives: Talk about an aspect of the Ritual as a part of chapter meetings. Discuss the Ritual as a group after initiation. Invite your alumni to come watch or participate in the Ritual. Alumni: Accept the invitation and go! In a place of privacy and as a group, recite the Oath at an alumni function and reaffirm your life-long journey as a member of Triangle.

After all, it is the Ritual that makes us all Brothers. It is the Ritual we all hold in common with each other, regardless of what stage in life we joined Triangle, what our chosen major or profession currently is, or how we choose to identify. It is our Ritual that makes Triangle and its members unique.

Ask#2: Tell our unique story! Triangle has produced some incredible Brothers, great experiences, and good deeds. Make sure we aren’t the only ones that know that! We need to follow in the footsteps of those that came before us and took the time We are an all men’s social fraternity. Did you know that nearly 65% of the Fraternity’s annual budget comes from undergraduate dues and fees? It’s true!

Less than 5% of the membership of the Fraternity (actives) are responsible for 65% of the annual income...and it’s the undergraduates who, arguably, have the least income.

Voluntary National Alumni Dues (VNADs) are non tax-deductible contributions from alumni, family and friends that provide much-needed funds to underwrite important programs and service, such as: • Area alumni events and activities • Regional education and training • Online services and resources • Advisor/advisory board training • Chapter recruitment assistance • Chapter officer training and support • Support to area alumni groups • Compiling and publishing the Triangle Review VNAD income lowers the burden on undergraduate fees and makes more programs possible. Over the summer, chapter leadership attended National Convention and enjoyed meeting brothers from other chapters. Additionally, a number of the chapter’s members held internship positions all across the country. Finally, five members of the chapter have been working hard to complete renovations to their rooms in the chapter house.

This summer the chapter worked diligently with their local Housing Corporation to make improvements to the chapter house and was able to get new floors installed in the main living spaces such as the meeting and living rooms, as well as the kitchen. This is part of the chapter’s plan in an effort to host more events to help improve recruitment.

During last academic year we were able to secure a foothold at the University of Texas at Austin – a top 25 engineering campus. With the help of a recruitment scholarship, contacts with on-campus organizations and leaders, and the support of the Student Life office, we now have ten men to represent Triangle there.

The last few years have been a significant challenge to bring Triangle to new campuses. With all the negative publicity and targeted public attention to Greek systems, many schools have suspended any opportunity for expansion, wanting to do work on current groups before they invite new groups to campus.

Texas has a more open concept, where any fraternity can come and recruit as a part of their Affiliate Circle of Greek Life. When the new group then reaches a size where they want to join one of the other Greek councils, such as IFC, they can petition for membership.

Similarly, Kyle Robertson is01, Chuck Lemons csu87, and Joe Byrd rose10 have put a lot of time into supporting the expansion effort. Having National Councilman Jon Eklund msoe99 and TEF Board member Bob Halgren 8

As with any new colony, a strong network of local alumni is the single most important factor for success.

The Michigan chapter had a great time at Convention and was honored to win the “Outstanding Chapter Operations” and “Outstanding Philanthropy and Service” Awards. Over the summer, chapter members interned at companies like Facebook and Garmin.

Alumni are the best resource we have in expansion. If you know young men at a campus where Triangle could be successful, let us know! Where we can encourage students to form interest groups and grow organically, we have better success than trying to come to campus for a few weeks to cold-start a colony.

Similarly, contact us if you’re doing graduate work at a campus where Triangle does not currently exist – especially at campuses where we may have existed previously, so have alumni from the group. We will work with you to see if planting the Triangle flag has promise!

The Minnesota chapter has been making some updates to the chapter home, improving storage and counter space in the kitchen.

OKLAHOMA The Oklahoma Chapter is celebrating its 40th local founders’ day this year with a huge celebration of their chapter, Triangle as a whole, and all of its members old and new.

PENN STATE With another Convention under their belt, the Penn State chapter is excited to take on the fall semester. With their recently awarded grant from the Triangle Building and Housing Corp. the chapter has some big renovation plans for their study room.

SOUTH DAKOTA MINES The chapter is proud of Connor Gronski sdm16 for being named President of the Year at National Convention this year.

TOLEDO In spring 2019 the Toledo chapter renovated its study room and was proud to receive an award for it at Convention. The members are looking forward to completing other house improvement projects like a new wooden Triangle to put outside of the chapter house.

UTAH A number of our members had great internship experiences this summer at Google, Utah STEM Action Center, the Smithsonian and more. Those members that stayed local spent time building brotherhood through camping and volunteering at the Ogden Nature Centers and STEM Action Center.

WASHINGTON The Washington colony is in the process of writing up its chartering petition and the members are hopeful to charter in March 2020. Additionally, the chapter is working with their campus United Greek Council to become an affiliated member.

A Legacy in Stone

y path of stone started when I was a kid. My next-door neighbor Joe Sowers worked for the gas company and had a rock collection. I always had an interest in nature and natural things. He gave me some tumbled rocks and an alabaster dog carving. That spurred my interest in stone, art, and science. My father started carving wood when I was young as well. He made, and continues to make duck decoys, bears, coyotes, songbirds, bison, and other wild creatures. I started whittling sticks, and when I was in Boy Scouts, I earned the wood carving merit badge. After high school, I went to Penn State University where I intended to study civil and environmental engineering. I pledged Triangle in the fall of 1993 and worked on our homecoming float — the Mad Hatter. I ended up in architectural engineering using all my talents of art, science, and engineering as well. My senior year, I created a Donald Duck out of paper- mache which won first place! I had some senior level architecture classes and always did well, but I got burned out on art after working with a tough group of people. I always wanted to be a maker and went into construction management.

BUILDING A STRONGER TRIANGLE Triangle Features

After graduation in 1999, I moved to Baltimore MD, where I currently reside, and started managing mechanical construction.

Around that same time, a friend of mine, Martin Lucey ps98 wanted to start a chapter at UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County) Once the colony was started I was able to assist by educating the first pledge class.

In that class was Bill Newkirk umbc00. Like all good stories, this one starts in a bar. I was out with Bill and his roommate Paul Greenbeck. Paul was an accomplished artist and draftsman and he mentioned that he was taking a continuing education stone carving class at MICA. (The Maryland Institute College of Art, the nation’s oldest art college, founded in 1826) “People still do that?” I said in shock. “I gotta see this!” A few weeks later, I signed up and went to the first class. I was early and the instructor, Robert Wilson, was there. We were making small talk and I mentioned that I carved wood as a teenager, to which he replied, “Good, you can work in the negative.” We talked about the tools and he mentioned, “Choosing a chisel is like choosing a hunting rifle.” As a country kid from Western Pennsylvania, this spoke to me and I was hooked ever since.

The first day Bob went over the tools, stone, and gave out a syllabus for the 10 week class. They had some Indiana Limestone chunks for us to use and I wasted no time chiseling on my first carving. I managed to bust a knuckle on the stone, to which Bob noted “If you bleed on the stone, you own it!”

Over the next 10 weeks I spent a lot of free time at MICA. I ended up carving what I would later call “Transition One”. My work means different things to different people.

Some think it’s a motorcycle, triathlon rider, or the mechanization of man. Either way, the meeting of the engineer and stone is interesting. Years of geometry, trigonometry, architectural design, calculus, and physics combine to create mostly futuristic work.

Eventually, “Transition One” was featured in a continuing education art show at MICA. A few days later, I got a call from the Dean of Continuing Education at MICA, asking if I would allow the sculpture to be put on display. I was reluctant at first but later allowed him to do so. I was busy at the time trying to buy and renovate a row house so I left it there for about 6 months.

I was working on a difficult construction project in the north part of the city where I had a rather contentious meeting with my vice president and the construction manager. Driving back to the office on the south part of the city I decided to pick up my sculpture at MICA. I walked in, said to the receptionist that I am here to pick up my work, and pointed to the sculpture. “Wait here!” she said. She went back to an office. A man came out and introduced himself as the Dean; also, 20-30 people came filing out of cubicles and stood there as the Dean asked me about the piece and my background. I was in awe. I do not get audience much anymore. He mentioned that if I want to carve something for them he would be happy to put it on display.

This should have been my “Aha! Moment”. I am too practical for my own good. As time went on, carving became an occasional backyard hobby. Since then, I have continued in Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and healthcare construction. I yearn for it at times, but I am in a good place. Like my father, when I retire I will carve more often.

Where do you get materials? Tools and stone are available online. I physically went to the Compleat Sculptor in New York City www.sculpt.com and bought some chisels. A simple set of steel or carbide chisels and a hammer will get you started. Try it out before you invest in a lot of expensive tools. I suggest you start with limestone, soapstone, or alabaster. The latter being the softest.

Granite and marble require more advanced skill and tooling and are not recommended as your first piece. Get a book on it.

I started with Milt Liebson’s “Direct Stone Sculpture”. Start out carving what you want. Then try to carve a hand, head, a human form, and a leaf. Geometric shapes can be challenging but produce a wonderful result.

How do you work stone? You start with a point chisel to rough out the shape. The tooth chisel refines the rough parts in a crisscross pattern. The flat smooths out the shape. Then, you sand it down to its final form. It is a simple progression. In time you will introduce grinders, files of all types, carbide tools, sanders, rifflers and rasps into your work.

Some Philosophy: It is a patient man’s hobby. Whatever stress you have that day will show in your work. Light taps of a hammer to a chisel. It will force you to calm down. not to scar the crystalline structure of the stone. You cannot glue it back on well enough to work. It requires little strength to carve stone. Your grandmother could do it. Moving the stone around is the hardest part. Do not be afraid of it. The whole planet is stone covered. You see it every day. It is one of the oldest arts known to civilization. You actually can understand the work the Greeks, Romans, Celts, and other civilizations went through to produce their cities, temples, and monuments. “Stone endures”: start chiseling!

A Closer Look Into Brother Jacob Rasuch’s tol12 Flowering Passion Ariel Tarosky | REVIEW Editor

Ever since he was a kid, Jacob has loved working with plants. He spent many summers working the multiple flower beds at his grandparents’ house in the country.

After years of working in their gardens, he asked his parents for a garden of his own. It was just a small 8’ by 8’ square, but to him, it was his own little paradise.

Jacob was so proud of everything he was able to grow, from sunflowers, to zinnias, and even some veggies too.

He wanted to start showing off his hard work, so when he was old enough, his grandma signed him up to enter his flowers into the county fair for judging. Ten year old Jacob’s first time ever walking into the “Floral Hall” at the Henry County Fair had him in awe. There were so many colors and varieties of flowers that he never even knew existed, but the one thing that he couldn’t take his eyes off of was the artistic floral designs. The shapes, concepts and patterns had him mesmerized. He had to learn how to do that.

There was such art and beauty to them, but there was also precision and pattern that made so much sense to him.

The next summer his grandma started teaching him what she knew about floral design; what colors complement each other, how to get height and dimension, what patterns to follow, and to just have fun with it.

The county fair came around again that August and Jacob took everything he learned that year and applied it to the two shows. For the first show he had to follow the theme of “Old School House”.

He used phlox and greenery to create a cascade of flowers coming out of an old school bell he borrowed from his grandma’s bell collection. For the second show he had to include parts of crops into his design, so he combined sunflowers, corn tassels, and corn leaves into a design in a wicker basket. Not only did Jacob place first in his age group for both the first and

second flower show of the fair, he also took home the “Best Junior Artistic Designer” award for each show as well. These awards were a major boost for Jacob’s confidence and catapulted him into his hobby of doing floral design.

Since age 11, Jacob has probably made close to 100 floral pieces for his county fair. Every year he sits through each judging to listen to the judges’ critiques to hone his skills. He’s earned multiple first place ribbons and even some more “Best Junior Artistic Designer” ribbons, as well as “Best Senior Artistic Designer” ribbons since joining the adult division at age 16. On top of joining the adult division of the fair at age 16, Jacob also was asked to join the Floral Hall Committee where he has proudly served as one of the younger members and one of the few male members, giving some unique ideas and insight to the committee.

On top of being on the committee and doing his own designs, for the last couple of years Jacob has been helping mentor two young girls in the art of floral design. Regan and Avery are the granddaughters of one of Jacob’s fellow committee members, Kathy.

Jacob said that, “These two girls absorb knowledge like a sponge and always want to learn something new. I’m running out of things to teach them!” When Jacob last talked to Regan about the flower shows she shared with him that it’s always nice that Jacob is able to come out to Kathy’s house when preparing for the show to help them and that it was also nice that Jacob is closer to her age and can relate to her more. She also said that seeing him do his work helped her see what she should be doing and looking for in a design.

Regan has advanced to the point that when Jacob was invited to do a larger scale “Invitational” floral design piece for the show and to work with a partner, he didn’t hesitate for one second and immediately asked 15

Regan to do it with him. Together the two took first place with their “Op Art” design for the 2018 show.

As well as doing the county fair show every year, Jacob has also started a little side business of doing arrangements and pieces for friends and family. For many years, members of his church would come to him when they needed arrangements for the altar. He never once took money for these pieces; he viewed the opportunity to do something for someone close to him and the excuse to get back to the florist bench payment enough. One of his favorite altar flower orders came from 16

the very grandmother that taught him how to start designing; December 14th, 2008 marked his grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary and she wanted him to do a pair of golden arrangements out of artificial flowers.

“It was one of the most important pieces I had been asked to do at that time” Jacob said. He didn’t realize until a week and a half later that it would be one of the last things he got to do for his grandma, as she passed away on Christmas Eve of that year. Jacob was able to channel his abilities though and help his favorite local florist do some of the flowers for her funeral. “To me, it was one of the last things I could do for her, and I knew just what to do to make it special” Jacob shared. He was also asked to do the casket spray for his other grandma when she passed away in July of 2012. Again he felt that it was one of the last things that he could do for his grandmother, and was honored to do it.

Jacob has done more than church and funeral flowers though since starting his florist hobby. During the summer of 2016, Jacob’s older sister Alicia got engaged, and one of the first things she asked was for his help with her wedding flowers. “I was nervous as hell! There’s something about doing flowers for your big sister, who is also one of your best friends, that adds a new level of

pressure. Everything had to be perfect!”

Jacob said. He was able to complete her bouquet, the four bridesmaids’ bouquets, the groomsmen’s boutonnières, and the altar flowers for the wedding. “Thank god she wanted artificial flowers so I could work on them in advance” he said. To date it’s been his favorite project though. He said that getting to see his sister so happy on her wedding day was worth every hour spent on all of the pieces.

The man has no plans to stop pursuing this passion. In fact, he’s already planning out his designs for the 2019 fair flower show, as well as help with the flowers of two more weddings! Both of the weddings are actually Triangle weddings he gets to help with next! The first is in August of 2020 and is the wedding of his Triangle little brother, Andrew, and his fiancée Savannah. The second wedding is less than a month later in September of 2020 and is for Jacob’s pledge brother Dan and his fianceé (and one of Jacob’s best friends) Hannah. “I’m extremely excited to be helping Savannah and Hannah with whatever they need me to do when it comes to the flowers, and I’m happy I get to stand by the side of Andrew and Dan as one of their groomsmen in their weddings too!”

The Viral Sensation

In December of 2015 I auditioned for my fifth time for America’s Got Talent in Phoenix, AZ. This time I auditioned choosing the heavy metal song “Let the Bodies Hit The Floor” by Drowning Pool. A song I regularly chose when performing karaoke with my children and grandchildren at a local spot in Albuquerque called Spectators. My song choice always seemed to be a crowd-favorite and it appeared to be no different at AGT. So, the local AGT producers took me to Pasadena to audition before the AGT judges (Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel). It was an outrageous success (even though Heidi gave me a “no”), and before morning the video had gone viral, trending #1 on YouTube and Facebook world wide for two days. Shortly, the video had more than 30 million views with one post receiving over 15 million views, 303,000 shares and 56,000 comments. A Google name search posted 386,000 entries. Headlines, photos and videos were in papers world wide. I became famous. I was getting recognized, asked for selfies and my autograph.

I moved on to the second round where I sang Rob Zombie’s “Dragula”, unfortunately, the lady judges did not like heavy metal and thus I was eliminated.I was soon identified as America’s “82 year-old heavy metal grandpa.” Local TV interviews and national radio interviews followed.

Then, Drowning Pool actually invited me to join them to sing their signature song, “Bodies” with them in concert!

On Thursday, July 14, Drowning Pool, NBC and AGT flew my wife, Marcy and I to Chicago for the Chicago Open Air Festival. NBC and AGT filmed us all that day and evening. Then, we met the band and had an opportunity to socialize with them that evening. The next day was filled with filming autographing events and ended where I performed before a crazy rocking, screaming 28,000 fan crowd at their concert.

The next evening I was asked to go for another concert with Drowning Pool to Mansfield, Ohio. “Ink in the Clink,” a huge tattoo festival held at the old Ohio State Reformatory. We had a great day and evening with the band—another great, wild crowd. After the concert, the day was topped off with a visit to the wing of the prison where over a hundred tattoo artists were operating.

There, the manager, Paul Gargano and I got our “prison tats.” I was honored to be invited to share the Drowning Pool logo!

The day ended with a very late ride to the hotel and flight home the next day. Recognition with autographs and selfies continued for some time. I performed on tour with Drowning Pool in concerts at The Black Sheep, in Colorado Springs (where I even crowd-surfed), and The Roxy, in Denver. That was the ending to my heavy metal rock star career.

Circle City Convention Joe Cerrato’s os05 initial speech upon assumption of the National Presidency

From July 17-21, the city of Indianapolis was host to the 2019 National Convention. Almost 170 alumni, actives, staff, family and friends converged on the Hyatt Regency hotel (site of our 2007 Centennial celebration) to socialize, learn, connect, discuss, pass legislation, honor award winners and install the new National Council.

Wednesday kicked off with meetings of the Council and Triangle Building and Housing Corporation. In addition, two pre-conference programs provided two-hour, in-depth discussions on Alumni Engagement by Director of Alumni Engagement Jeff Hughes, and Recruitment by Director of Chapter Growth Augie Farwig.

National President Brian Jarman pur01 welcomed attendees at the opening business session, where Executive Director Tom Pennington provided a State of the Fraternity report. Attendees then received an overview of the week’s schedule and the rules and procedures for considering the proposed legislation. Legislative proposals had been received well in advance, reviewed by Council and were available several weeks in advance of the Convention.

The day ended with an elegant Welcome Reception in the historic conference center of the Barnes & Thornburg Law Firm, courtesy of our hosts Brian Jarman and TEF Chairman Don Knebel pur65 – both partners at the firm.

Cakes, cookies, pastries, a coffee bar and wine/beer cash bar provided a nice late-night sweets break that allowed attendees to meet and get to know each other.

On Thursday, our general session began with a keynote speech from Dr. Lori Hart – one of the most popular speakers in the nation on Greek life, leadership and health & safety issues. Despite the national concerns about the worth of fraternities today, her speech was about the value of fraternity membership, its importance for the success of our members and how, when done correctly, fraternity can be essential to the development of good citizens and values-based men.

Dr. Hart stayed with us to facilitate two one-hour workshops along with several other speakers and facilitators for a total of ten workshops on various topics, such as recruitment, finance, alumni engagement, risk management, leadership and brotherhood. These were opportunities to learn from experts as well as students and alumni from other campuses.

Box lunches were distributed and delegates went to work at mid-day to consider legislative proposals. Then, two Ritual-focused presentations – one on Staging the Ritual with Councilman Jon Eklund msoe99 and one on Talking About the Ritual with Your Chapter by National VP Joe Cerrato os05. We then moved into the popular CEO Symposium featuring three highly successful Triangle alumni: Larry Garatoni pur58, Mark Caswell rose98 and W W W.T R I A N G L E .O R G

Mike Mayer wis99. These alumni gave their perspectives on what it takes to lead organizations and how Triangle helped their success.

Thursday evening was dedicated to our Annual College Night Awards Dinner where attendees wore school colors and celebrated outstanding performance by chapters and individuals (a list of award winners is in the sidebar). A tailgating theme was chosen for the buffet dinner with burgers, dogs, wings and a variety of items common to football weekends and celebrations.

Friday kicked off with the Triangle Building and Housing Corporation (TBHC) breakfast for current and prospective clients and then our General Session #3, where we received a State of the TBHC report from Chairman Dick Beaubien mich64 and a program around hazing prevention by Lianne Kowiak. A round of four one-hour Town Hall meetings closed the business for the day and attendees had the afternoon to explore the city, visit Triangle HQ or catch up on sleep.

Thanks to TBHC sponsorship, dinner was held at Victory Field – home of the Indianapolis Indians minor league baseball team. After a quick buffet attendees had a block of seats as the Indians took on the Durham Bulls in an exciting-inning affair game with fireworks after. A heatwave made for a very warm evening, but they say even a hot night at the ballpark is better than a cool night most anywhere else!

Attendees awoke to a full schedule of activity on Saturday. A final morning business session included a State of the Foundation message from Triangle Education Foundation, as well as the installation of the new National Council. Joe Cerrato os05 was installed as President, John Cottage ps04 as Vice President, Tyler Moore tol09 as Treasurer, and Stuart Masuda uci07 remained Secretary. Thanks were given to Brian Jarman for his service and leadership as he stepped into the Past President position on Council.

The biennial Wall of Fame Luncheon celebrated the accomplishments of several Triangle alumni. Robert Oakley pur65, Lawrence Kaplan ill84 and Robert Davidson pur61 accepted their awards in person and shared their thoughts. William Hoskins sdm48 – inventor of the modern two-piece aluminum beer can – accepted his award via video.

Other honorees were Lyle Hassebroek wis60, and Jesse Core ps34 (deceased).

Two rounds of Town Hall blocks followed with a variety of topics to help chapters and alumni, wrapping up with the TBHC Annual Meeting. With business concluded, attendees prepared themselves for the closing dinner. A pre-dinner reception was held for donors and then a race-inspired buffet dinner with Indiana favorites and a special milkshake bar to honor the annual drinking of milk at the end of the Indianapolis 500.

President Joe Cerrato set the tone for his term with an emotional speech given on what we learned was his anniversary of his marriage – yes, his wife and daughter were there to celebrate with him. And then, the announcement of the Building Better Men awards for chapter excellence. The chapter at the University of Louisville took top honors, with an award of $100,000 to seed their Chapter Endowment Fund with TEF.

Runner-up Ohio State then stunned the crowd with an amazing show of Brotherhood, deferring their $25,000 award to third-place Cal Poly. Ohio State has a significant endowment fund already and felt it important to share the wealth with a young growing chapter who needed the funds more – most impressive! This year’s $25,000 “Rattle Award” to a new chapter or colony went to the University of Washington colony’s fund.

Last, but not least, we finished the evening with a video announcing the 2021 Convention: in Orlando, Florida. Details will be forthcoming, but set your sights on late June and bring the family to enjoy some of the best amusement parks in America!

SCHOLARSHIPS General scholarships and fellowships are available to members of all chapters. Nine needs-based scholarships and one graduate fellowship are currently available. With the exception of the Bye, Schmitt & McClelland Scholarships, all require a minimum GPA of a 3.0/4.0 necessary for consideration.

The scholarship committee will consider need and active involvement within his Chapter, his campus and the community, and other criteria specific to each scholarship.

Scholarships are available only to Triangles who will be undergraduates in the school year following their application, with the exception of the Kapadia scholarship which may go to either an undergraduate or graduate of Triangle, and the Larson Graduate Fellowship.

What does it take to establish a scholarship fund?

There are several ways. The two easiest would be either a one time gift or pledge over three years of $25,000 or more to the Foundation. All donor established scholarships entitle the donor to name the fund and define the restrictions (subject to the acceptance of the Foundation Board) to be attached to the fund.

Two Organizations

ONE BROTHERHOOD We are one Triangle with a shared brotherhood and philosophy, but in accordance with the Internal Revenue Code, the Foundation and Fraternity are two separate organizations. The Fraternity is the operating company and works directly with chapters.

In 1971, the Triangle Education Foundation was formed to support the educational, leadership, and philanthropy activities of the Fraternity. Each organization offers unique opportunities for brothers to support Triangle, but understanding the specifics can be challenging, which is why we’ve created this basic guide. We want you to know exactly where your dues and donations are going and how they make a difference in so many lives.

PROPERTY IMPROVEMENT CONTEST OBJECTIVE To encourage Active Chapters to undertake improvement projects in their Chapter Houses and/or communities. Project examples could be, but are not limited to, such things as improving life safety (fire safety, security, accessibility), general home improvement projects (landscaping, paint, room remodeling, bike racks, flooring, LED lighting, etc.) and community improvements/involvement (playground equipment, FIRST Robotics sponsor/volunteer).

GRANT AMOUNTS Grants totaling up to $10,000 in a given year will be disbursed in the form of payment to your national account based on the following: • Number of project proposals submitted • Estimated costs of proposed project(s) • Quality of proposal(s) and the project(s) • Impact of the project(s)

There you will find information on the contest and how to submit your proposal.

Tip: Applications should detail the improvement (pictures and drawings are encouraged), the estimated costs, the time-line, and a list of the individuals performing the work. Please include the chapter’s and project’s primary contact. Permission from the owner of the property is also required.

By entering the TBHC Property Improvement Contest, the Chapter warrants the information provided is complete and truthful. Failure to provide complete and truthful information or to mislead the Contest Committee in any way, or to not complete the work as described will be grounds to deny an award and prohibit subsequent submissions at the Committee’s and TBHC Board’s sole discretion. Should the Chapter have received any award based on incomplete, misleading, or false information or if the work as described is not completed, the Chapter shall be required to immediately refund the full award to TBHC. The individual submitting the application represents and warrants that it has the authority to bind the Chapter according to these terms.

A Look Inside the Illinois House Connie Sieferman | Administrative Assistant

When you are the founding chapter of a fraternity, new beginnings are your hallmark. The Triangle chapter house at the University of Illinois is looking ahead to a process of redevelopment, repurposing and renovation of their current facility throughout 2020-2021. It is one more step on the Illinois Triangle journey that began in 1907, reflecting a broad range of new beginnings that spans over 100 years.

The current chapter house at 112 E. Daniel Street in Champaign, Illinois was built in 1963. At the time, it was considered to be completely modern and of contemporary design. It stood just west of the original 1910 structure, which was demolished after its replacement was complete. The new facility rose four stories with eight levels and was expertly designed to provide the maximum amount of space for the members. With potential accommodations for 60 men, it was attractively constructed in brick with glass and aluminum trim.

Appealing and efficient features included a spacious living room with conversation areas, a fireplace, coffee tables and cozy seating options. The adjacent dining room, which could seat 60 on a regular basis and 120 at a banquet, offered modern tables and chairs for comfortable meal experiences. A quaint feature of the Illinois chapter house was the existence of a “housemother’s suite” on the main floor, a pleasant trio of living room/bedroom/bath. This area has since been re-purposed for a guest bathroom and a conference room, FA L L 2 0 1 9 | T R I A N G L E R E V I E W

but still harkens back to a day when a house director was a common feature within a fraternity’s chapter house. A kitchen equipped with stainless steel fixtures plus a sizeable recreation room on the lower level added functional interest to the 1963 building.

Improvements and building upgrades were accomplished over the next couple of decades: landscaping and patio areas, as well as a second recreational space on the top floor that included a weight room and pool table, a tool room for woodworking and metal projects, and a sundeck. Despite the fact that the house sported living space for 60 men, there was a period in the 1970s during which the men chose to sleep in the topmost level of the building. David Zielke ill71, now the treasurer of the Alumni Board for many years, remembers this quirky open-air dorm with a dose of amusement.

“When I lived in the house, the entire top floor was a dormitory. Because there was no heat up there, we all had electric blankets that we would turn on about 15 minutes before hopping into bed for the night. It was downright cozy, even on the coldest winter night. There were no alarm clocks; the first one going off would wake up the entire dorm. But we had a system, using computer punch cards. You would take four punch cards with a hole in each, then bind them together with wire or string, hang them at the foot of your bed’s frame, with one card face up. On each card you would write ‘7’ (wake at 7 am), ‘8’ (8 am), ‘S’ (sleep – don’t wake at all), or ‘R’ (for ‘rack’).

It is a lasting tribute to the significance of this fraternity’s “Alpha Chapter” and to those individuals who have worked tirelessly across the last several decades to keep the property up to code, make repairs, and secure the smooth operation of the facility. They take pride in their chapter! Zielke goes on to say, “Once I graduated, I never left. Parties and pledge dances over the years, I continued to come and be a part of that. Any changes were gradual. The one thing that has not changed is the quality of the guys. That’s not just my opinion, but also that of my wife and my parents. The Triangle men have consistently been outgoing, congenial, friendly.”

Alumni Board President Matthew Frank ill11, echoes the sentiment. “We get a lot of compliments from graduates. They feel that they can come back and bring their families. The house is still so close to what they were used to.”

But as with any property or structure, time takes its toll. The house shows its age, its years of exposure to harsh midwestern winters, and its steady stream of residents and activities since 1963. The alumni and active boards have been meeting regularly over the last several months to discuss physical house improvements and potential redevelopment plans. The general consensus is that significant action is needed in order to extend the life of the house at least 25 years. The current proposal calls for a two-stage renovation timeline, with Phase 1 complete by August, 2020. Phase 2 would be complete one year later. Matthew offers a general overview of the plan.

“We’ve worked with an architectural firm for technical drawings and the proposal. We’d like to increase the house capacity by adding six more rooms upstairs (where the second recreational space is currently located). Remodeling of all existing finishes, especially in the dorm rooms and bathrooms is necessary. Upgrading is needed for all of the mechanicals and the electricals.

Adding air conditioning! We hope to create a more versatile space by making better use of the large areas and downsizing the kitchen, which is no longer used as extensively in the current dining and serving process.”

Major plumbing work and upgrades throughout the facility are on the drawing table, alongside the replacement of the original boiler with a modern HVAC system. The exterior façade is in need of roof trim and fascia; the rainwater/downspout system should be replaced; brickwork requires cleaning and tuckpointing; some windows and the sliding doors need to be replaced.

Roof membranes exhibit leaking. A full drop ceiling in the common areas and sleeping rooms should be installed to meet updated codes and will likely include the replacement of light fixtures in some instances. Flooring improvements are needed for some common spaces, stairwells and dorm rooms.

Yard features and basement renovations round out an already-extensive list of known areas that need attention. Matthew sums up the monumental task ahead for the chapter. “We are looking at some major fundraising over the next year! Total cost estimates range from $2M to 2.7M. We’d like to have our fundraising efforts completed by the end of this calendar year, with a goal of beginning Phase 1 of the renovations in January.”

These are ambitious goals indeed. The current president of the active board is William Laitar ill18, an enthusiastic advocate for the value of a chapter house. “One of my favorite things about being in close community with my brothers is just seeing them every day and being around them. We are continually working on common academic pursuits. I also love getting a knock on my door with an invitation to go out socially. We always have something to do, because we are around our brothers all the time.”
