Meet Kyle Robertson is01

Kyle Robertson, JD (is01) is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of NarrativeDx, an Austin, TX-based startup that has developed the leading AI platform for patient experience. Robertson grew up in Wichita, Kansas, and studied computer engineering, math and economics during his tenure at Iowa State. While at Iowa State, he joined Triangle Fraternity, where he served as recruitment chair and chapter President.

After graduating magna cum laude from Iowa State, Robertson moved to Austin to work at National Instruments as a C++ Engineer.

“The realities of bug-fixing at a large software company quickly set in and I started to think about other career paths,” shares Robertson. “I recalled a Scobie Leadership Academy that I attended as an undergrad. The keynote speaker was Don Knebel [pur65], a very accomplished Triangle brother who was an Intellectual Property Lawyer. I didn’t realize it at the time, but that keynote changed the direction of my life over time.”

Robertson quickly began to work nights and weekends as an AI Engineer at a video game startup in order to save money while he applied to law schools. He enrolled at Boston College Law School, where he graduated in 2008 as Managing Editor of the Boston College International and Comparative Law Review. He joined Intellectual Property megafirm WilmerHale as an intellectual property attorney and assisted on litigations for Intel, Cisco and Facebook - as well as the landmark cell phone wars as defense counsel for Apple.

“While I found the work intellectually stimulating, my heart wasn’t really into the day to day of being an attorney,” he remembers. “I really wanted to see the effort I put in have a more direct impact on the world around me.”

As a way to pursue this goal, Robertson founded iCare, the first mobile crowd funding platform for charitable causes and disaster relief.

“I remember one day looking up from something I was working on and seeing an ad for disaster relief donations on TV,” said Robertson. “You could send a text message to a number and $10 would be donated from your phone bill. Being a lawyer, I read the fine print at the bottom - half of the money was used as a fee to the cell phone company. I knew I could do better than that.”

Robertson exited iCare in 2012 and took a sabbatical in Bali, Indonesia.

“I really needed a vacation, I don’t think I had taken more than a handful of days off in the previous decade,” he shares. “Immediately before I left, I had met a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin who was seeking to use patient feedback to improve care experiences. That idea grew in my mind while I was supposedly vacationing, and I made it about three months before I moved back and founded my next company, NarrativeDx.” In 2014, he founded NarrativeDx with his current business partner, Senem Guney, PhD, CPXP, to transform patient experience and help healthcare organizations hear the voice of their patients. “Patient experience is a problem that touches millions of people at one of the most vulnerable points in their lives,” says Robertson. “Our AI platform for patient experience is a chance to have a great impact through technology.

Today, Robertson spends his time setting strategy, playing ping pong with the NarrativeDx team, building relationships with industry partners, and advocating for using technology to improve healthcare. In his spare time, Robertson also serves as the Chief Intellectual Property Officer for Wysebridge, an online interactive exam prep service for the patent bar exam. He also serves as a board member for Food Connect, a nonprofit partner of the NFL that uses technology to connect food rescue and hunger relief efforts in real time so surplus food can get to where it needs to go.

hange is constant. Those that embrace this law thrive and those that fight it often cease to exist. For most of my time in Triangle, I have known the same to be true. Our attitude towards change can have a profound affect National President’s Angle on how we experience that change.

Regardless of whether we embrace or fight change, it will happen.

Much has changed since the last Triangle Review and much will continue to change. I wanted to take my first President’s Angle article to talk about a few of the changes that have already happened and a few of the changes to come.

To begin, Triangle Fraternity has a new National President. I am honored to be your National President. As I said in my remarks at the National Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, I am truly honored to join the long list of great brothers who have served in this role before me. For those of you I have not met yet, I want to introduce myself. My name is Brian Jarman and I am from the Purdue Chapter. I was initiated in 2001 and graduated from Purdue’s School of Mechanical Engineering in 2005. I graduated from the Indiana University McKinney School of Law in 2010. I am a patent attorney working at Barnes & Thornburg LLP in Indianapolis, Indiana where I help large corporate clients manage worldwide patent strategies. I am excited to help the fraternity and its members grow during the next year of my term.

My vision is that we will become one Triangle fraternity having shared beliefs evinced by shared action. Today, many of us get our identity as a Triangle member because of our local chapter experience. It is my hope that in the future, our brothers take their Triangle identity from our shared values first and their local chapter experience second. Our Ritual, values, and code of ethics provide a strong foundation for our chapters to grow and thrive.

It is my hope that we will continue to build a common product which draws new brothers to this great fraternity.

As I said in the start of this article, change is constant. It is my hope that each of you takes on an attitude that embraces change.

Each of us at the National Council, the Triangle Building and Housing Corporation, the Triangle Education Foundation, and our outstanding professional staff are already at work creating this change. We also stand ready to help each of you. We ask that you join us and be an agent of change that is needed in our chapters, our communities, our families, and our world. I look forward to the next year as your National President. And most importantly, I look forward to the change that we can accomplish together.

Triangle Fraternity also has changed its short-term focus to better accomplish our strategic plan. We’ve heard much feedback from our members that help and resources are needed for our existing members before expanding to new campuses. While expansion must be part of our long-term strategy, we recognize that investment in our current members and chapters must take place so that we can build a strong foundation on which to grow.

To that end, Triangle has changed its staff and its short-term focus to reflect our priority of investment in our current membership. Since July, we’ve welcomed Drew Hopson to our staff as the Director of Alumni Engagement. Drew brings full-time, professional focus to helping increase support and engagement of our alumni. At the same time, our new Executive Director, Tom Pennington, reviewed the current landscape and challenged the National Council to stop cold-start expansion at new campuses for the upcoming school year and to focus on our existing chapters. Council listened and Tom took the lead in creating Recruitment 2.0, Triangle’s new recruitment plan that will help our chapters focus on the process of recruiting new members, not merely to survive, but to thrive. By the end of the 2017-2018 school year, we hope to have over 1,500 collegiate members (actives and new members).

Finally, it is my hope and vision that the fraternity will continue to change into one Triangle Fraternity.

The Campaign for Triangle has positioned Triangle for continued success through the fantastic commitment of loyal alumni and friends.

Launched in 2012 as a $5,000,000 endowment campaign the Campaign, for Triangle went public in July 2015 and the goal was increased to $6,500,000. The campaign’s momentum continued through 2016 and the $6,500,000 mark was passed in June 2017. Gifts continued to roll in during the final weeks, days and hours of the campaign.

“The generosity of alumni and friends of Triangle is truly humbling and is a credit to the values the Fraternity has instilled. I am especially excited about the broad base of support for the Campaign for Triangle with gifts from members spanning nine decades. The team effort led by volunteer and Triangle staff made the resounding success possible” said, Triangle Education Foundation President Scott Bova, CFRE. The more than 425 donors to the campaign have already allowed the amount of program funding to double and funding levels will continue to grow as campaign commitments are fulfilled. Campaign gifts have provided support for the launch of several new programs and expansion of existing initiatives including:

INTRODUCING TRIANGLE’S EVERYMAN NEW MEMBER EDUCATION PROGRAM

The period of time between pledging and initiation is a critical time for the development of any Triangle; it sets the tone for his entire membership experience. Did he truly learn what the Fraternity stands for and why? Did he make friendships? Did he learn the expectations of membership and how to be a better man? To better help chapters provide such an impactful new member experience, the Fraternity is launching an official New Member Education Program, known as the Everyman Program.

This ten-week program introduces new members to the Fraternity, providing information on Triangle’s history, the Code of Ethics, purpose statement, operations, local history, team building, leadership and professional development, and more. Beginning after the Pledging Ceremony and culminating with Initiation, the program is designed to create an engaging and dynamic experience for all new members. It also better equips chapters to prepare new members for success.

The desire for a National-driven New Member Education program came about for a number of reasons. As the Fraternity emphasizes its focus on building “One Triangle” it is important that a consistent program is offered to the newest members of Triangle. Additionally, it was evident that our active chapters and colonies were struggling to offer a comprehensive and intentional new member education program that not only prepared their new members for initiation but that assisted them in their college transition.

It was important to us when creating a New Member Education program that we still allowed for chapter autonomy. We didn’t want to take away the programs that our chapters have been building for years; we simply wanted to provide a structure to assist them in improving and aligning their programs with National learning outcomes.

Rather than developing a program to replace our chapters’ current existing programs we have created a template that chapters and colonies can use at their discretion. By using this template, chapters and headquarter staff will be able to determine how much support and structure the chapter/colony needs. For example, some chapters may just need help in incorporating workshops that focus on personal, professional, and leadership development; others may need creative ways to educate their new members on the history of Triangle. Whatever the needs are, there are resources to help.

How it will work: Interested or encouraged chapters/colonies will receive a number of resources, including a program syllabus, lesson plan template, and ten weekly activity guides. Activity guides will highlight the recommended learning outcomes, activities and assignments, and will also provide team-builders, PowerPoints and webinars.

For this upcoming year, chapters may choose to use the National program as is, or use the program with substituted activities and assignments. Any new activity or assignment will need to be submitted to a staff member at Headquarters. Chapters and colonies will be encouraged to start transitioning to the Everyman Program during the 2017-2018 academic year, with a final implementation by Fall 2018. Chapters will continue to use the current version of the Member Manual which is sent to chapters after the National Pledge Fee has been paid. An updated Member Manual will be available for Fall 2018.

We understand that change can be hard and that it takes time. Staff is available to answer any questions, talk through any frustrations, and make any adjustments that will help the chapter and new member be successful.

Training sessions, webinars, and officer training will be covered throughout the year to assist chapters and colonies as they begin their transition.

Triangle Introduces Recruitment 2.0 Recruitment Efforts to See New Tactics & Partnerships for 17-18 School Year

S

uccess in recruitment is central to long-term chapter success. It affects a chapter’s visibility on campus, its ability to compete with other organizations and its image within the college administration and faculty.

More practically, it provides the chapter with young men who do work, pay bills and learn from the experience of running an organization.

Triangle has a number of chapters that recruit well and have grown substantially in the past several years. We also have chapters that struggle with recruitment – nearly a third of our chapters have fewer than 20 members, and of those, five chapters have fewer than 10 members. In addition, overall membership numbers decreased over 7% in the last academic year.

To respond to this decrease in membership, we’ve created a Recruitment 2.0 strategy outlining programs and tactics that have a proven impact on recruitment success. Important components of this program include: • An annual recruitment scholarship – brings in contact info and background on dozens to hundreds of excellent prospects.

• Leadership Advantage program (or similar college program) – connects you with the engineering college, builds rapport with the Dean and faculty and puts Triangle in front of top new students.

• Volunteering with FIRST Robotics or Lego League programs – builds strong visibility and name recognition with a prominent international program and builds a pipeline of students who will know Triangle when they get to college.

• Alumni participation in recruitment – because there’s nothing stronger than a potential new member (PNM) seeing a successful STEM professional talking about how Triangle helped him get there.

To guide chapters in the process of recruitment, we’ve built a “V-I-P-S” outline focused on Visibility, Involvement, Planning-Partnerships-Participation, and Skills. The outline explains these components and how chapters might integrate them over time into an annual schedule of recruitment activity for a consistent and successful program. We understand this will take some time to build, but creating a long-term structure is vital to our future success. This may be a significant change for many chapters but we trust it will be change for the better.

In the meantime, we’re rebuilding our website and creating a new “JoinTriangle.org” website within it. On these pages, we will explain why Triangle is different than other fraternities and why that’s a great benefit to members.

We also will provide answers to the most important concerns students express about joining – time, money, grades, and parent concerns, as well as testimonials from members about why Triangle was the best choice for them. In addition, we are: • Piloting a Triangle Recruitment Coaches program where trained alumni will coach chapters to improve their recruitment program and set specific goals and tactics for growth.

• Creating partnerships with FIRST Robotics/Lego League, Phi Sigma Rho women’s STEM sorority, as well as Phired Up and Launchpoint – two successful recruitment training companies.

• Improving online resources for training and to help chapters understand recruitment and set specific targets for their needs.

• Putting a hold on cold-start expansion to new campuses until we can help stabilize current chapters – we simply don’t have the resources to do both.

What can alumni do to help? First, read the article about Alumni Engagement on page 17 and consider how you can participate. Specific to recruitment, we need more alumni involved in raising and awarding recruitment scholarships, advising and mentoring our chapters or just participating in an alumni evening during recruitment week. We’re going to improve the information and resources, but personal involvement by alumni has no replacement.

Chapter News Triangles of All Ages Spend Summer Sustaining the Bonds of Brotherhood Across Generations Both the Active and Alumni brothers of Triangle from Marquette kept a busy schedule during the summer break with a regular calendar of events to keep brothers from all eras connected. This Summer’s schedule involved monthly outings including: Family Zoo Day, Tailgate at the Milwaukee Brewers vs. Chicago Cubs Baseball Game, and 10th Annual Camping Trip, among other events.. It will conclude with an Annual Golf Outing this September.

These events help foster and maintain the relationships established through Triangle Fraternity. Both Actives and Alumni helped in the planning of various events, offering a diverse range of opportunities to cater to multiple interests and needs.

Triangle is the Top Academic Fraternity at Iowa State This Spring, Triangle at Iowa State achieved a term GPA of 3.39 which was the highest of all the IFC chapters and tied for 3rd among all Greek organizations on campus. The chapter also had a New Member GPA of 3.62 which shows the potential to keep this excellence going.

This Spring semester was also the first time the colony was able to fully participate in Greek Visit Day, allowing the group to jump-start their summer recruitment efforts with confidence to remain on track to petition for installment this fall. Triangle Re-focuses Efforts on Alumni Engagement New Initiatives Are in the Works to Support Alumni

M

ore than 90 percent of Triangle members are alumni. They are an international network of professionals in varying careers and one of Triangle’s most valuable resources. However, until recently, there have been few programs designed to engage this vital constituency. This year we are working to change that alumni engagement will be one of our highest priorities.

There are many ways in which we will focus efforts and resources into alumni engagement: • Determine the wants, needs, and preferences of Triangle alumni • Extend the Triangle experience through social events and activities • Create a network of technical professionals for career support and mentoring • Increase advising and support for active chapters • Provide ongoing membership benefits A first step was the hiring of a Director of Alumni Engagement, Drew Hopson. With support from the Triangle Building and Housing Corporation and Triangle Education Foundation we secured the funding needed to support the position. The first few months will be spent evaluating our current level of alumni support and programming to build a baseline of data that will guide the development of an alumni engagement plan.

One program element will be recruitment and orientation of more alumni to work with active chapters. Many of our groups have only one alumnus who, because of time or distance, may not be as involved as the chapter needs. More alumni support means no individual alumnus is overwhelmed, and our students then have more alumni to counsel and guide them.

A national “Career Contact” program could provide active members the ability to call or email an alumnus in a job area they’re considering, to ask advice or find out more about the work they do and how they achieved their success. This could/may be incorporated into a new membership directory.

The senior to alumnus transition also is an important component, building an experience to teach our graduating seniors how to be good alumni and connecting them with regional alumni groups in the geographical areas where they choose to move. A senior “Send-off ” kit can be designed to be used in conjunction with the graduation ceremony.

We also will look for benefits we can add to the alumni experience.

Already we have identified discount relationships with men’s clothing, travel and entertainment companies. For those who are interested, these benefits can save members money and be a value-add for being involved.

Metrics we’ll use to determine impact will include the number of alumni contributing to TEF or the Voluntary National Alumni Dues (VNAD) program, the number of alumni on chapter advising or house corporation teams and the growth of city and regional alumni activity.

Rose Tech Prepares for Milestone

Rose Tech Anticipates 50th Celebration

In May of 1968, the Rose Tech Chapter of Triangle was installed at Rose Polytechnic Institute, now Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

Fifty years later, the Chapter has grown to be one of the most successful fraternities on campus. The Chapter will be celebrating its 50-year anniversary the weekend of May 4-6, 2018.

We invite all alumni to save this date and make plans to attend the festivities which will include an open house, campus tours, and dinner celebration at the Union on Saturday evening. Many of the Founders will be attending, so please plan on joining us for this important milestone.

Get to Know Director of Operations, Rhonda Halcomb, Who Is Celebrating 25 Years with Triangle

Tell us about how you were hired: My interview was scheduled for the evening since I had a full time job and did not want my then-employer to know I was leaving. It was a dark, rainy March night and I was at least 15 minutes late for my interview. I thought for sure I would not be eligible, but apparently the interview went well as I received a call within two days offering me the job. I obviously accepted the offer and later found out that one of the biggest factors was that I already knew the accounting software as I had been using it at my previous employer, so training was not a liability and they would be sure to get their paychecks on time!

What is the biggest change you have seen in Triangle since you started?

Generally how all communication is handled. Email did not exist in 1992 for the most part although Triangle was one of the first if not the first fraternity to start using email. I remember Kevin Fong and Merle Newlon working on setting email and obtaining the domain triangle.org….I did not even know what a domain meant in that terminology for several years. Now almost all communication is done via some form of an electronic manner; almost no one actually calls the office any more.

What is your favorite thing about Triangle?

Meeting the Triangle members themselves; the pleasant environment that the Triangle National office has been; and apparently (whether it is a favorite or not), I get to problem solve almost daily. Maybe I should have been an engineer…

What is your favorite memory over the last 25 years?

I don’t know that I have a favorite memory; there have been several nice moments. The most surprising was when I had foot surgery a couple of years ago and some National Councilmen came to my home to check on me and make sure I was actually coming back to work...I do not make a habit of working from home or outside regular office hours, but that was one time when I did. I just could not stay out of touch too long I guess.

| Chairman of HQ Investments Larry is a graduate of Purdue University (BSCE 1961), and completed the Owners/President Program of the Harvard Business School. He served in the Army Reserve attaining the rank of Captain. He and his wife Judy have four children and 13 grandchildren.

In 1966 Larry and a partner built and operated one long term care facility. He later bought the partner’s interests. Larry continued building healthcare related facilities and companies and up to 1994, Larry founded and operated several companies under the Health Quest Group name. These businesses included the Health Quest Corporation, Health Quest Development Corporation, Achievement Rehab Corporation, Long Term Care Pharmaceutical Services Corporation, and Health Quest Infusion Therapy Corporation. In 1994 he made a strategic decision to sell all of these companies.

From 1994 - 2007, Larry started or acquired and served as the CEO of three software and internet sales companies: Achieve Healthcare Technology, FurnitureFind.com, and Winesource.com. All of these business interests were sold in 2007.

In 2007 Larry founded HQ Investments, which is a family office. HQ Investments manages various publicly traded and private investments. Personally, and through the Garatoni-Smith Family Foundation he and his wife Judy founded the Career Academy and the Success Academy charter schools with an enrollment of 1150 students. He also co-founded Magnet Investors, a local angel investment group.

Maynard P. “Pete” Venema ar29

| President & Chairman of Universal Oil Products Company A 1969 Chicago Tribune profile of Maynard P. Venema, then the chairman of Universal Oil Products and head of the Chicago Association of Commerce and Industry, said, “There aren’t many people who are more optimistic about Chicago’s economic future than this businessman.” But Pete was more than a businessman, as he served in leadership roles in health, education and religious organizations.

Pete graduated from the Armour Institute of Technology (now IIT) with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1932. He joined Universal Oil Products as an engineer and worked in the patent department. While at the company’s Washington D.C. offices, he earned a law degree from Georgetown University. Pete rose through the ranks of UOP until he became company president in 1955, then chairman and chief executive officer in 1961, before retiring in 1974. He remained a director of the company until 1978. He held two patents during his time with UOP: Controlling temperatures in simultaneously conducted endothermic and exothermic reactions, and Hydrocarbon conversion.

A resident of Northfield, Illinois, Brother Venema entered Chapter Eternal on May 21, 1997, at age 86.

Dr. Gerald S. Jakubowski tol74

| Retired Provost & Vice President | California Maritime Academy Dr. Gerald S. Jakubowski had a distinguished career in higher education administration, as well as engineering education. He served as: President of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana; Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at The California Maritime Academy in Vallejo, California; Vice President of Arizona State University (ASU) in Tempe, Arizona and as Provost of ASU’s Polytechnic campus in Mesa, Arizona; and Dean of the College of Science and Engineering and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Jakubowski started his mechanical engineering teaching career at the University of South Alabama. He subsequently held positions at the University of Toledo and the University of Memphis where he had risen through the academic and administrative ranks. He held positions as Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Engineering at the University of Toledo and as Associate Dean of Engineering Graduate Studies and Interim Dean of Engineering at the University of Memphis.

In addition to his work in higher education, Dr. Jakubowski has been active in several professional organizations including the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE), the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). He held numerous positions in these societies at the national and regional levels. He served on the EAC for ten years, and served on its Executive Committee for seven years including Chair of the Commission. He also served as a mechanical engineering program evaluator for the EAC of ABET. He is a Past National President of ASEE and served on its Boards of Directors for a total of seven years.

He served on the Board of Trustees of the SAE Education Foundation, on the Board of Directors of the Triangle Fraternity Education Foundation, on the Board of Directors of SAE, on the Council on Education for ASME, and on the Board of Directors of the Institute for the Advancement of Engineering (IAE). He served on the National Council of Triangle Fraternity, including two terms as National President. He is a Past President of IAE and a Past President of the IAE College of Fellows.

A native of Toledo, Ohio, he received his bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering all from the University of Toledo. He also completed Carnegie-Mellon University’s College Management Program. He specialized in the thermal-fluid sciences and energy conversion. He has made numerous conference presentations and published several journal articles in these fields.

| Retired President of Dade Behring, Inc. Robert W. Brightfelt retired as a Group President of Dade Behring, Inc. on December 31, 2002 after serving more than 36 years in the health care industry. Brother Brightfelt was a founder and member of the board of directors of Dade Behring, Inc, a $1.8 billion global clinical diagnostics company which develops, manufactures, sells and services equipment and test reagents for over 30,000 major hospital laboratories throughout the world.

At Dade Behring, he held positions of Executive Vice President and Group President, with P&L responsibility for the Chemistry & Immunochemistry product lines, and operational responsibility for the entire Company’s R&D, Manufacturing, Product Management and Marketing functions worldwide. Dade Behring, Inc. was later purchased by Siemens AG. Following his graduation from the University of Nebraska in 1967, Robert Brightfelt served 4 years as an officer & aeronautical engineer in the USAF and 29 years with the DuPont Company. During his time with DuPont, he held several executive positions in R&D, Manufacturing, Marketing, Strategic Planning and General Management. During the last 9 years with DuPont, he headed DuPont’s Global Clinical Diagnostics Business. Robert is a graduate of Walter Mahler’s two-year executive general management program, and a graduate of executive management programs at Dartmouth University and the University of Virginia. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Sigma Xi, Sigma Tau, Pi Tau Sigma, Gamma Gamma, Phi Mu Epsilon and Phi Eta Sigma honor societies, past president of the University of Nebraska chapter of Triangle Fraternity and is recognized in “Who’s Who among Top Executives.”

Brother Brightfelt has recently worked part time as a consultant in the health care industry. He is a past board member of Dade Behring, Inc., Molecular Bio Systems Inc., and the Health Industry Manufacturer’s Association.

Randall L. Herrel, Sr. pur70

| President & CEO of Santa Catalina Island Company Randall L. Herrel., Sr., currently serves as President and CEO of the Santa Catalina Island Company, a 120-yearold family hospitality, resort and real estate company. Randy joined the company in 2007 and also chairs the Finance & Investment Committee and is a member of its Executive Committee. From 1996 to 2006 he served as President and CEO of Ashworth Inc., a publicly traded global sportswear company. He also served as its Chairman from 2001 to 2006. Randy joined Quiksilver Inc. in 1989 as its Chief Financial Officer and later held the additional positions of Chief Operating Officer and President. Quiksilver is a publicly traded global sportswear company.

Randy is a Director of Storm Industries, Inc., a private realestate and global industrial products company. He also serves on the company’s Audit and Compensation committees. Randy is an honorary chair of Our Lady Queen of Angels Church capital campaign.

Dr. Kevin P. Granata os83

| Former Professor of Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute Professor Kevin Granata was a man with a sharp intellect who answered a call to serve the cause of scholarship and higher education. During a 2007 campus shooting at Virginia Tech, he died while protecting students after he shepherded them into his office in order to safeguard them, then went to investigate and intervene.

Kevin was born and raised in Toledo, Ohio and received undergraduate degrees from Ohio State University in electrical engineering and physics. He later earned a Master’s degree in physics from Purdue University. Thereafter, he worked in the Applied Physics Laboratory in Maryland. He received his doctoral degree in biomedical engineering from Ohio State University and then worked in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Virginia, where he was the director of the Gait Laboratory.

Professor Granata was recruited to ESM to continue his teaching and research interests. He had numerous publications and research grants and lectured both nationally and internationally. He distinguished himself by making many outstanding scholarly contributions.

In particular, he developed innovative methods to quantify low back stability that are considered cutting edge by other leaders in the field. He served as mentor for numerous students and junior professors. When Dr. Granata was promoted to the rank of professor, one of these professors conveyed, “Countless times he has provided me with valuable guidance on research-related matters such as student advising, experimental issues, and manuscript preparation.”

Leaders in the field of biomechanics called him “among the top five biomechanics researchers in the country working on movement dynamics in cerebral palsy”, as being “nationally recognized for his research”, “as an internationally outstanding scholar and educator”, as “often finding themselves quoting from Dr. Granata’s papers”.

Kevin’s greatest passion and pride was his family, especially his wife and children. He was also an athlete. He rowed crew at Purdue, participated in biathlons and triathlons and was an avid runner and cyclist, as well as an avid sailor. He loved coaching his sons’ lacrosse teams.

Outstanding Chapters Recognized by Triangle Education Foundation Judy & Larry Garatoni Building Better Men Initiative Awards $125,000 for Second Year

By Triangle Education Foundation Vice President, Aaron Girson At the 2017 Convention’s closing celebration, Triangle Education Foundation President Scott Bova announced the Michigan chapter as the first place recipient of the Judy and Larry Garatoni Building Better Men Chapter Endowment Fund Program. As the top performing group, the Michigan chapter received a $100,000 Chapter Endowment Fund and as the runner-up the Michigan Tech chapter (last year’s $100,000 recipient) received $25,000 for their Chapter Endowment Fund.

The Judy and Larry Garatoni Building Better Men Chapter Endowment Fund Initiative was launched in 2016 to recognize outstanding Triangle chapters that are making scholarship, service, leadership development and being a positive influence on their communities a priority. Chapter Endowment Funds may be used by the chapters to fund educational programming, leadership development initiatives, academic achievement programs and scholarships.

“The Judy and Larry Garatoni Building Better men award means a tremendous amount to our chapter. We are very active in attending national events and this award will help offset some of the costs associated with sending more men to programs such as the Herb Scobie Leadership School and Leadership Training Weekend”, said James Coller mich13, Michigan Alumni Board.

The 2018 Judy and Larry Garatoni Chapter Endowment Fund competition starts in September; all Triangle chapters are eligible to participate.

Triangle Building and Housing Corp. Attends Installation of Clemson Chapter

By Triangle Building & Housing Chair, Dick Beaubien The newest chapter of Triangle Fraternity was installed at Clemson University on April 8, 2017. The Triangle Building and Housing Corporation was present as part of a welcoming group that also included representatives from the Triangle National Council and the Triangle Education Foundation.

TBHC Chairman, Dick Beaubien mich64 represented the TBHC. He presented a framed copy of the Triangle Code of Ethics as part of the Installation Banquet Program. In his remarks to the new initiates, their families, friends, and faculty, he noted that the Fraternity experience does not end with graduation; Triangle gives you friends for a lifetime.

Some of your brothers will be in your wedding party, and one of them may be your best man.

Although leadership is vital to members’ success, it is not taught in the classroom.

Leadership is taught in the Fraternity through the organization of brothers to reach common goals. Triangles learn how to recognize the talents of others and motivate them to use those talents for group objectives.

TBHC Announces New & Improved Property Improvement Contest TBHC Offers Grants Totaling Up to $10,000 a year In an effort to encourage Active Chapters to undertake improvement projects in their Chapter homes and/or communities, TBHC is offering grants totaling up to $10,000 a year.

Project Examples: Project examples could be, but are not limited to such things as improving life safety (fire safety, security, accessibility), general home improvement projects (landscaping, painting, room remodeling, bike racks, flooring, LED lighting, etc.) and community improvements/involvement (playground equipment, FIRST Robotics sponsor/volunteer).

Grant Amounts: Grants totaling up to $10,000 per year will be divided based on the following: Number of project proposals submitted; Estimated cost of proposed project; Quality of proposal and

the project; Impact of the project. Both small and large projects are welcomed.

Grant Award Process: Proposals will be evaluated monthly. If the project proposal is approved, a grant will be issued.

Grant dollars are limited per 6 month periods, therefore it’s advantageous to submit at the beginning of each period.

The periods are from January - May and June - December. Proposals that contain the following may be given preference: Encourage joint alumni/active participation; Maximize the number of participants as a percentage of the chapter house; A category that TBHC is promoting for a particular 6 month period.

How to Apply: Submit a project proposal to pic@trianglebhc.org detailing the improvement (pictures & drawings are encouraged), the estimated costs

(budget), the timeline (time to complete) and a list of the individuals (actives, alumni, contractors) performing the work. Please include the Chapter and the project’s primary contact. Permission from the owner of the property is also required.

Project Completion: Upon project completion, the chapter shall submit the following: Before and after pictures; Actual project costs including copies of receipts.

TBHC will evaluate the completed projects annually and award the three best projects. Winners will be announced at Scobie Leadership Schools & Conventions. Prize money amounts will vary depending on the balance of the unused yearly grant budget.

Triangle Establishes Partnership with FIRST

Triangle Fraternity has established an Alliance Partnership with FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and wants to identify FIRST alumni within our membership.

FIRST is one of the most well-known and influential organizations in the world, dedicated to the promotion of STEM education and careers. It’s programs involve over 460,000 K-12 students and 230,000 volunteers in 2,600 events worldwide.

If you were involved in FIRST Lego League, Tech Challenge or Robotics Competition as a team member or volunteer, let us know at FIRST@triangle.org.

Include your name, chapter, initiation year and the FIRST team number or area/region where you were involved. We’ll add the note to your member record and keep you in the loop as we move forward with this exciting partnership.

When a fraternity man invents something that will change the world, it is more likely to be a Triangle than just about any other fraternity. That’s not because we’re the largest fraternity; it’s because our membership is limited to degree plans that are central to engineering, scientific and technological solutions to the challenges that face mankind.

Triangle alumni help change the world through the work they do in the research, design and creation of new and innovative processes and products – and now there is a way to celebrate that work. The National Council has approved the creation of a new recognition society for Triangle members with patents in their name.

The Triangle Fraternity Academy of Inventors recognizes Triangle Brothers for their contributions to society and the world through their inventions. There are three levels of membership – Member, Distinguished Member, and Distinguished Fellow. Membership at all levels is open to living and deceased Brothers and to all members, including Chapter Honorary members.

Member – any member of Triangle who holds at least one U.S. patent. Self-nomination is encouraged and will be the primary method of selection, although members may be nominated by other Brothers. Nomination must include total number of patents held, the patent number(s), date of the patent, and a brief description of each patent and who it was assigned to. Membership is automatic.

Distinguished Member – any Brother of Triangle who holds at least five (5) U.S. patents is eligible to be a Distinguished Member. As with members, self-nomination is encouraged. See the member section for required information. A listing of all distinguished members will be placed on the website. Membership is automatic.

Distinguished Fellow – Distinguished Fellows will be elected by National Council. Nominations may be made by any member of Triangle. Nominees will be placed on a candidate list from which National Council will select inductees. To be considered for the Distinguished Fellow level a member must hold at least three U.S. patents. The primary criteria for selection will be the impact of the inventions on the betterment of society.

Nominations will be able to be submitted via the Triangle website or may be submitted via email to inventors@triangle.org. A listing of all Academy members will be placed on the website. Please nominate yourself or any other deserving member!
