At the time that I am writing this, the TAA just held a fantastic Casino Night, our PAC is closing in on our 2023 goal of $33,000.00 and a new Board of Directors has been selected and voted in by you, our amazing members. As the year winds down and my term as president draws to a close, I am left to reflect on how much I have appreciated this time and how grateful I am to have had the opportunity to serve as the Triangle Apartment Association President for these past two years. When I joined my first committee all those years ago, I had no idea it would lead to such an amazing experience that I am both proud of and thankful. Looking back at January 2022, we were still unsure how the world would adjust post Covid and what a “New Normal” would look like and how the association would adapt and further our efforts. Now as we close in on 2024, I could not be more excited for the outcome. The TAA has continued to offer incredible classes, we have held amazing networking events that have allowed our members to connect and reconnect in so many ways. We have hosted incredible webinars and incorporated the flexibility of online or hybrid meetings when necessary. Through our partnership with Copper Circle, we have continued to raise money and awareness to combat housing insecurity and increased our ability to offer more of our members amazing scholarships towards professional credentials.

the extreme hard work and continued dedication by my fellow board members, committee co-chairs, committee members and above all, the incredible staff of the Triangle Apartment Association. The level of care and pride you all put into the association could not be matched. Thank you for all that you do. 2024 marks the 40th anniversary of TAA and under the exceptional leadership of Berry Craven and his Board of Directors I could not be more excited for what’s in store. • New educational opportunities including a leadership development program. • Increased programming centered around Diversity Equity and Inclusion. • Opportunities to give back to the community working closely with Special Olympics. • New fun and exciting events that will allow our members to network and connect with one another. • The Association will continue to be the voice of our industry throughout the upcoming election cycle All culminating in a 40th year anniversary party to celebrate the TAA’s past, present and future! Thank you everyone for your support and encouragement, I look forward to serving with all of you in the years to come.

TAA’s Leadership Lyceum Program

New!

We are excited to introduce our new Leadership Lyceum program, which launches in February 2024! The program identifies and develops admirable, highly motivated, and committed multifamily housing individuals for future volunteer leadership roles and opportunities within TAA and beyond. The Lyceum Program is a collaborative four-month program that will bring together professional candidates of varying backgrounds. Together, these candidates will learn the qualities of an effective leader, analyze individual leadership roles, and develop personal leadership styles, skills, and the confidence to grow as volunteer leaders within our industry. Who is Eligible to Participate? We invite members who wish to develop their leadership skills and further their Apartment Association (TAA) involvement. There is a maximum of 30 candidates, 23 Owner /Operators, and 7 Supplier Partners. Cost: $200 TAA Members Requirements: The program application must be filled out and submitted by Thursday, February 29th. Visit the TAA website to download the Leadership Lyceum Application. Your company must be a TAA member in good standing. Attendance Required: Candidates must complete the entire curriculum program and requirements to attain a certificate. Attend One TAA Board Meeting in March, April, or May (Candidates must attend a TAA Board meeting by May to graduate in June).

The Membership Committee hosted two additional Maximize Your Membership sessions this year, one on September 19 with 49 attendees and one on December 7 with 48 attendees. These sessions are open to new member firms, new employees to TAA member companies, and those who want a refresher. Information presented allows individuals to hear the nuts and bolts/the ins and outs or in other words, it includes how to get started, get connected, and get involved. After some very popular networking and breaking, TAA Vice President Berry Craven, Ginkgo Residential, LLC, kicked things off with a welcome and some brief comments. Director of Membership, Vicki Franciosi, then shared important information for attendees to assist them in navigating the Association, while making the most of their experience. And each session was capped off with small break out groups, led by TAA Ambassadors and Volunteer Leaders.

At the end of 2022, we announced the merging of A New Lease on Life + Education Foundation. Since then, the Board of Directors and Board Committee Members have worked tirelessly to make this new vision come to fruition. After countless meetings, workshops, and visioning sessions, COPPER CIRCLE was born.

QUICK Q&A What is COPPER CIRCLE, the organization? COPPER CIRCLE is the name of the new entity created by the merging of A New Lease on Life + Education Foundation. MISSION STATEMENT: Our mission is to build stronger communities by harnessing the skills and resources of the rental housing industry to advance professional development and efforts to end homelessness. VISION STATEMENT: Our vision is for a world where doors are open to stable housing and career opportunities for all.

What happened to A New Lease on Life + Education Foundation? NOTHING! A New Lease on Life + Education Foundation continue to exist as programs of COPPER CIRCLE. The two have pooled their resources to be more effective in creating change in the spaces of ending homelessness and improving professional development within the local rental housing industry.

HIGHLIGHTS A NEW LEASE ON LIFE We served 4 families this year. One family successfully transitioned out of the program and remained in rental housing unit at market rate with no subsidy. One new family entered the program in a rental housing unit provided housing by Highmark Residential. We are appreciative of Palms Associates LLC and Blue Ridge Companies for providing housing to our families as well.

REVERSE TRADE SHOW With all of you, we did it again! On Friday, August 25, 2023, we hosted our annual reverse trade show at the McKimmon Center. MEMBERSHIP BREAKFAST The TAA-PAC hosted its 3rd quarter membership breakfast in September featuring special guest NC State Treasurer and Republican Candidate for Governor Dale R. Folwell, CPA. Folwell provided engaging conversation with our members regarding his responsibilities for 240 billion dollars, which is nearly 8 times larger than the state budget. The TAA-PAC holds quarterly breakfast events with local elected officials from all levels of government including federal, state, and local officials. The event is an opportunity to meet and network with the policymakers whose work affects the industry. Thanks to Loebsack & Brownlee for serving as the breakfast sponsor.

TAA-PAC ENDING THE YEAR STRONG! In conjunction with TAA’s Casino Night in November the PAC held its final fundraiser of the year. Members generously donated baskets for the raffle, and attendees bought raffles tickets for a chance to win one or more of the baskets! The event raised $3000, inching us closer to our $33,000 goal! TAA’s Special Events Committee wrapped up their 2023 summer season with a fantastic After Work Networking event at Carolina Ale House on July 18th with a Summer Camp theme. Over 175 members gathered for an evening of delicious appetizers, refreshing cold drinks, and the chance to win incredible prizes reflecting our theme. The event buzzed with networking opportunities, showcasing its enduring popularity. Furthermore, the XCEL committee once more collaborated with the Special Events committee to provide professional headshots in exchange for a $20 donation to go to the Food Bank’s initiative. By the end of the night, combined with February’s After Work Networking fundraiser amount, the committee raised $1,940, which translates to 9,700 meals!

Golf Tournament

This year’s 2023 TAA Golf Tournament saw an exciting achievement, with sponsorships and golfer spots completely booked in under 30 minutes. It was a great reunion as 128 players and over 60 company representatives returned to the pristine greens of The Neuse Country Club. The tournament itself proved to be a fantastic event, offering players a smooth playing flow experience and the chance to interact with our sponsors. All the while, the dedicated volunteers of the Special Events Committee worked tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring that this year’s tournament was the best one yet. After a summer of diligent planning, their hard work paid off, and everyone savored a filling lunch from our new friends at SantoPietro’s food truck, followed by a refreshing Pelican’s Snoball to cap off the day.

Casino Night

As the curtain falls on TAA’s 2023 calendar, the year concludes with a dazzling Casino Night, channeling the glamour and red-carpet allure of “Old Hollywood.” Attendees enjoyed delectable heavy hors d’oeuvres, explored a variety of food stations, flashed contagious smiles at the 360 photobooth, tried their luck at various casino games, and danced the night away. Adding an extra layer of excitement, every guest automatically entered a prize-winning raffle, courtesy of the adept Special Events Committee, ensuring a night of great fun and enjoyment for all! Prizes ranged from a luxurious night at the Heights House Hotel to a pampering duo massage at Hand&Spa, exclusive tickets to “A Christmas Carol,” a refined dining experience at the Angus Barn, and enticing shopping gift cards. With nearly 300 guests registered, the event not only provided a splendid backdrop for suppliers and owner/operators to partake in entertaining games and music but also offered valuable networking opportunities. TAA’s Casino Night, a sophisticated affair filled with glamour, games, and connections, etched unforgettable memories for all who attended.

Happy Hour Headshots The Xcel Committee hosted another very successful fundraiser during the July 18 After Work Networking event. With a donation to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC, attendees received a new headshot. Thirty individuals took advantage of this opportunity while others donated without a headshot. At the end of the evening, $970 was raised – and in July matched by the Food Bank – making our donation $1940, or the equivalent of 9,700 meals. There is often an even greater need during the summer at the Food Bank and this spoke to the committee. Thanks to all who supported this effort and a special thank you to Megan Kime Photography!

DEI Committee hosts seminar

TAA’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Committee held its inaugural seminar on Friday, November 10, from 9:30am-12:30pm in the TAA Education Center. Titled, Unconscious Bias: Myth Busters edition, the session was facilitated by DEI Practitioner & Consultant, JoHann Yo Sobha, who led a thought-provoking, engaging class. With 37 in attendance, it was a great morning of learning new ideas and concepts, listening to shared experiences, and hearing what biases can be good, and what biases we may need to work to improve.
