For the first time in 22 years, Chris Caverly won’t be around for the finish of Saturday’s Relay for Life at Coquitlam’s Percy Perry Stadium.

He’s leaving halfway through the 12-hour marathon event to attend the high school graduation of his son, Rhys. That he’s able to do that at all may be because of the money raised by the relay to benefit the

Canadian Cancer Society.

Caverly is a cancer survivor twice over.

His first diagnosis with the disease led to his first participation in the run. His second

diagnosis, as well as the loss of family members and friends over the years, steeled his resolve to keep running.

Caverly was a fit, active 31-year-old father of an infant daughter when he was told he had six months to live because cancer was in his stomach and had spread to his lymph nodes.

Caverly decided he had nothing to lose and everything to live for. Doctors removed 80% of his stomach and put him on a eight-week regime of chemotherapy.

“I had a young family I had to support,” Caverly said.

It was as his wife was driving him to the cancer clinic for one of his chemo treatments

he saw a sign along the road for the relay. She told him he should do it, and a week after his last round of drugs, he did.

“Physically, it was tough,” said Caverly, who’d dropped 60 of his 180 pounds during treatment. “For me it was a point to prove that I’d beat the disease.”

As he circled the track and then mingled with other survivors and families while his teammates continued, Caverly gained an appreciation that cancer was much larger than his own encounter.

“It was an eye-opener,” he said. “I was just concentrating on myself, but there’s all these other people going through loss.”

Caverly’s Crusaders of 12 runners doing one-hour stints on the track became an annual effort, then expanded to Caverly/Kot’s Crusaders when a good friend, Tony Kot, succumbed to the disease. Over the years they’ve contributed to the more than $500 million raised by similar relays across Canada to help fund research into cancer causes and cures as well as support services for patients and their families.

Then, four years ago, cancer came back, this time in Caverly’s kidney. It seemed he’d never be free of the shadow cast over his life by the disease, which had also claimed his mother and father

and had alighted in his sister’s breast.

Luckily the tumour hadn’t spread so doctors cut it out and no further treatment was required.

But the fear and uncertainty were all-consuming. Caverly said the relay and the connections he’d made there through the years became a lifeline to positivity.

“It gives people hope, that’s what the relay provides,” Caverly said. “Doctors can tell you one thing, but the power of the mind can be very important.”

16-year sentence for fentanyl trafficker Deterrence cited by judge as reason for hefty sentence Diane StranDberg Tri-CiTy News

The danger the drug fentanyl poses toward society and the need for denunciation and deterrence were among the reasons a B.C. judged sentenced a Coquitlam man to 16 years in prison for trafficking and possession of fentanyl, firearms and proceeds of crime.

Friday, Provincial Court Judge E. Jamieson presented his reasons for sentencing Andrew Edwin Robert Leach for his role in a year-long trafficking conspiracy involving substantial amounts of fentanyl as well Xanax and cocaine.

Leach, 35, was the head of a drug line that trafficked in fentanyl knowing the danger it posed to users because small amounts can be fatal, the judge noted in his sentencing report.

“The variety of drugs sold on the drug line is an aggravating fact by itself, showing the breadth of the trafficking organization. But fentanyl is recognized as being significantly more dangerous than the other drugs,” Jamieson wrote, noting that between January 2017 and October 2017, fentanyl was present in over 83% of illicit overdose

deaths in B.C. “The wiretap transcript shows that Mr. Leach was aware of people dying from fentanyl. It is of little significance that single, individual fentanyl pills sold by Mr. Leach’s drug line contain slightly less than the 2 mg dose considered fatal, particularly when the range of 1.3 to 1.9 mg amounts in each pill show such a large production variance of 0.6 mg.”

Although there was no evidence that fentanyl trafficked

by Leach caused a fatal overdose, “In my view, however, this does not significantly lessen the aggravating fact that Mr. Leach was trafficking in a drug at the heart of the health crisis.”

Coquitlam RCMP’s Drug and Organized Crime Section spent a year between June 29, 2016 and June 28, 2017 investigating the operation.

There were 40 drug buys and telephone and text communications were intercepted after police obtained a wiretap authorization in May, 2017, which allowed them to install recording devices in vehicles associated with Leach and at a Coquitlam apartment.

In addition to the arrest of Leach, a number of his associates were also charged, as well as his mother, sister and nephew. But charges against the family members were stayed once Leach was sentenced.

In the admission of facts, it was noted police executed

search warrants at three Coquitlam apartments and found more than 11,000 fentanyl pills, 1,500 Xanax pills, 12.17 grams of cocaine, 44.33 grams of methamphetamine, $750,000 in cash and several prohibited fire arms, including a loaded Cobray M-111/9 mm and two loaded Glock pistols.

Only on the first buy of June 29, 2016 did Leach have direct hand-to-hand contact with the undercover buyers but admitted to the buyer that on occasion he had three women working for him.

In December, 2017 Leach pleaded guilty to seven offences, including trafficking and firearms offences but would only admit to possessing fentanyl found at his mother’s home on Cortes Avenue, with a street value of between $30,000 and $70,500.

The large number of weapons found and the haphazard way they were stored at his mother’s condo, threats made to a customer and caught via wire tap were all aggravating factors in the case, the judge stated. However, Leach’s early guilty plea saved time and court resources and an admission of responsibility and an apology for the harm done to his community were all mitigating factors in the sentencing.

Coroner probes death of student Tasered by rCMP Cornelia naylor Glacier Media

The 2016 death of a former BCIT international student who died in custody after being Tasered by police in Coquitlam will be probed at a public inquest in July.

Juan Carlos Salvany Sailes, a Venezuelan national and permanent resident of Costa Rica, came to Canada to study at BCIT in 2014, according to a B.C. Coroners Service press release.

Two years later, on Oct. 19, 2016, he died after going into medical distress while in the custody of Coquitlam RCMP. Police had been called to the 1500 block of Balmoral Avenue at about 11 a.m. that day after a number of calls about a man

trying to break into homes on the street, according to a report by the Independent Investigations Office.

Police located the man, Salvany Sailes, inside a residence. He appeared to be in crisis and severely injured, according to the police watchdog’s report.

Police told media at the time attempts had been made to calm Salvany Sailes down, but officers eventually deployed a stun gun and took him into custody. He went into medical distress soon after and was taken to hospital, where he died. The IIO cleared the officers involved of wrongdoing in an Oct. 27, 2016 report, concluding the injuries that caused Salvany Sailes’s death

were sustained before his contact with police and the Taser.

Because the former BCIT student died while in police custody, however, a public inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act. The inquest will take place on July 9 at the Burnaby Coroners’ Court (20th floor, 4720 Kingsway, Metrotower II). Coroner Susan Barth and a jury will hear evidence from witnesses under oath to determine the facts of his death get a chance to make recommendations.

A 46-year-old Vancouver man faces 12 charges in relation to a string of bank robberies, including at least one in Coquitlam.

Police identified Sean Bishop as a suspect after a bank robbery in the 1900-block of Rosser Avenue on Feb. 24, according to Burnaby RCMP. A warrant was put out for his arrest, but he remained at large, and is suspected of robbing 11 more financial institutions in Burnaby, Vancouver and Coquitlam between Feb. 24 and April 26 before being arrested in Vancouver on May 3.

Burnaby RCMP had received information of Bishop’s where-

abouts and requested assistance from Vancouver police, who arrested him and turned him over to Burnaby RCMP. After a lengthy investigation, involving the Burnaby RCMP robbery unit, Vancouver police, Coquitlam RCMP, the Real Time Intelligence Centre and Lower Mainland Integrated Forensic Identification Services, Bishop was charged with 12 counts of robbery.

“The strategic coordination of information between partner agencies played a significant role in the success of this investigation,” media spokesperson Cpl. Daniela Panesar stated in a press release.

Residents of a Coquitlam mobile home park made a preemptive strike to city council in its opposition to a potential five-building development on Dewdney Trunk Road.

A preliminary application has been received by the city from Infinity Properties to construct five apartment buildings containing 477 units and 13 townhouses on land currently occupied by the Hideaway Mobile Home Park on the border with Port Moody. Hideaway’s residents are restricted to being at least 55 years old.

“We want to keep it at that,” resident Patricia Baker told Coquitlam city council Monday. “We’re going to fight for our homes.

“We are going to fight this tooth and nail.”

Baker said there are no other trailer parks in the region to move their homes to. That’s if their homes are safe to be moved or meet requirements set by other parks, she added.

“There is nowhere to live.

There is no seniors housing.

No seniors housing is being built anywhere else. There is nowhere else to go,” said Baker.

She was accompanied by

next-door neighbour Gloria Kuiper.

“It just causes stress. It’s time you stand up for the people instead of the developers,” Kuiper told the councillors.

Kuiper said while the mobile homeowners will be compensated, she wants assurances it will be at market value. Baker said her income is below the poverty line but can only afford to live in Hideaway because her monthly pad rental is $466.

There’s already a development going ahead right beside Hideaway. Baker said all the residents but one at the 17-pad mobile home park next door, which is in Port Moody, have been cleared out to make way for 230 rental units being built

by PC Urban.

“This is very upsetting to me,” Coun. Mae Reid told Baker and Kuiper.

Reid believes more mobile home parks are needed, not fewer. She and other councillors referenced Polygon’s development of land formerly occupied by Windsor Glen mobile home park at Lincoln Avenue and Pipeline Road. Jim McIntyre, who heads the city’s planning department, said there were 20 units at a reduced rate set aside for residents of that mobile home park.

Mayor Richard Stewart said Windsor Glen worked out and noted Polygon actually sold the building where the displaced owners were relocated for less than it cost to build it.

“The [applicants and city]

will meet with the owners long before it comes to council,” Stewart assured the Hideaway owners. “Our challenge, as best as possible, is how do we make it right?”

There are considerable hoops ahead for any development proposal to jump thorough before construction can begin. An initial application would have to be vetted by the city’s planning staff when conditions can be negotiated, including relocation and compensation for the current mobile home owners.

“They will have to come back with a doable application,” said McIntyre. “Staff will have to go through it before putting it before council.”

To get the property rezoned from a mobile home park would require the official community plan (OCP) to be revised. That would necessitate a public hearing and discussion at council. Only after that’s approved, a rezoning application would have to be brought forward. That process would also involve public consultation, a public hearing and council discussion.

The city’s director of development services George Fuji said Infinity’s pre-application proposal included one rental building to help displaced mobile homeowners.

“I don’t want to live in an apartment,” said Kuiper. “I want to live in my home where I can garden and have a place for my pets.”

CP Rail strike could slow WCE commutes CP Rail strike action complicates Tri-City commutes TransLink is again alerting West Coast Express (WCE) commuters about a potential strike by unionized CP Rail workers, who were due to walk off the job last night (Tuesday).

The regional transit agency, which runs WCE on CP Rail tracks, is advising passengers — as it did last month, when

bargaining broke down — about the possible job action that may slow their commute.

The Calgary-based company has told TransLink it will have “qualified managers” to maintain the signals and tracks; however, should that fail, TransLink has a dedicated bus ready for the Port Coquitlam station that will transport WCE riders to the Evergreen Extension in Coquitlam, spokesperson Chris Bryan said.

“We won’t leave them in a

lurch as far as transportation goes though it may be a slower trip,” he said.

(The Tri-Cities each has a WCE station, of which Coquitlam and Port Moody’s are tied to the Evergreen line.)

Over the weekend, the unions representing train operators and signalling workers — the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers — gave CP Rail notice they were to strike as of 10 p.m. EDT Tuesday.

June 15 deadline for grants Federal funding being offered to seniors groups

Tri-City groups working on projects led — or inspired — by seniors have until June 15 to apply for federal government funding.

McKinnon called on eligible organizations to request the cash via the New Horizons For Seniors Program (NHSP).

Community-based projects that help vulnerable seniors, focus on diversity and promote volunteerism can receive up to $25,000.

And new for this year, groups that haven’t benefitted from NHSP money in

the past five years can get up to $5,000 under a new small grants pilot project.

In a news release, McKinnon said getting seniors out to “pursue an active lifestyle, expand their social network and explore new learning experiences… will better equip them to face the challenges of our rapidly evolving society.”

Don’t expect a bridge across Burrard Inlet or a tunnel underneath Bert Flinn Park in Port Moody to relieve the increase in traffic that is anticipated if and when the Ioco Lands are developed.

But an extension of David Avenue along the right of way that already bisects the park is still in the cards as one of five options deemed suitable for further analysis in an independent technical study commissioned by the city to investigate possible alternatives to putting a road through the 311-acre green space. The results of that study were on display at an open house at city hall on Monday.

The report, by ISL Engineering, examined 16 potential routes to improve the connection between the Ioco Lands and Inlet Centre.

Currently Ioco Road is the most direct link, but traffic along that route could increase significantly with development of the Ioco Lands that were acquired from Imperial Oil in 2015 by Brilliant Circle Group, said the reports.

The developer has yet to make an application to develop the 250-acre property that includes the old Ioco townsite where employees of the refinery once lived. Last year it held a series of public consultations and open houses to gather feedback on its proposals to construct a new residential and commercial neighbourhood with improved access to the waterfront.

A right of way to extend David Avenue westward has been part of Port Moody’s official community plan for decades, but in 1999 the city

turned the green space that straddles that route into Bert Flinn Park following a referendum. A proposal to build out that right of way into a connector road sparked protests and in September, 2016, city council directed staff to prepare a report into possible connector routes.

Using the right of way through the park still makes sense, said ISL in its report. It would relieve traffic congestion along Ioco and East roads, create more capacity for greater development of the Ioco Lands and provide improved access

for pedestrians and cyclists as well as roadside parking for trail users. Construction of the road would cost about $50 million.

But the route would have an impact on trails in Bert Flinn Park as well as the movement of wildlife, according to the study. It would also require the acquisition of private property in the village of Anmore as well as the construction of a 250metre bridge across Mossom Creek.

Relying on existing roads like Ioco and Sunnyside would spare the park and wouldn’t

cost anything, said the report, but they would become busier, noisier and more polluted if the Ioco Lands are developed.

The status quo would also mean less capacity for development of the Ioco Lands and no opportunity to improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists.

A third option to make improvements to Ioco Road like adding a second left turn lane at Ungless Way and installing traffic signals at Maude Road, Kicking Horse Way and April Road would improve access but not capacity or conditions for pedestrians, cyclists and residents along the already busy route.

An option for a new route that skirts the northern and eastern edges of the park by connecting Lundlow Lane to Strong Road and then down to David Avenue has already raised the ire of the village of Anmore, which said in a letter sent to Port Moody’s mayor and council on May 8 it would increase traffic along its local roads and impact “our residents substantially.”

ISL’s report acknowledged the impact of the that route on residents of the village, along with various incursions into Bert Flinn Park, but it also said it would improve access not only to the Ioco Lands but for Anmore as well. It estimated such a new road would cost

about $50 million to build.

A fifth option would rely upon a combination of strategies like improved transit services, subsidized transit passes, shuttles, car share services, better facilities for cyclists and pedestrians, and the encouragement of more mixed-use development in the area so residents don’t have to travel so much to access services and amenities to manage traffic demands in the area. The report recommended many of those ideas should be implemented no matter which connector route is ultimately chosen.

Among the options rejected by the report because they’re too expensive or because of property constraints are a bridge across Burrard Inlet that would cost about $1 billion to build, a tunnel underneath the park that the report said would be so expensive it’s unlikely the scale of development for the Ioco Lands would make it financially worthwhile, or building a road along the railway right of way just below Ioco Road.

Several other routes were also deemed to have minimal potential to attract traffic from the Ioco Lands.

The city is collecting feedback from the open house, as well as online, until June 18. The report, along with the feedback, will be presented to council in July.

Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay said the best thing about the report is it will open up discussion on how to handle a growing region with a perceived inadequate transportation system. But the only way he envisions the public will support it is if the regional gas taxes drivers currently pay at the pump is drawn back.

“This is getting the conversation about the costs and the benefits out in the open and maybe we’ll come up with some solutions,” said Clay.

The report’s analysis models show a regional “congestion point charge” would cost an “average-paying household” $5 to $8 a day, which works out to $1,800 to $2,700 a year.

It would reduce congestion by about 20 to 25% and raise $1 billion to $1.5 billion in revenue per year.

Multi-zone, distance-based charges would cost households $3 to $5, and would also reduce congestion 20 to 25% and raise $1 billion to $1.6 billion annually.

Whatever method is decided upon, the report admits making it a reality won’t be easy.

“Changing the way people pay will be politically difficult, and the issues raised by a decongestion charge are many and complex. But the possibilities to support regional goals

for quality of life, environment, and the economy are significant,” said the report’s executive summary.

Stewart said while other jurisdictions around the world have dealt with congestion by other methods, in North America the preferred way is by increasing sprawl and building freeways.

“I’m not a believer you can build your way out of congestion,” he said.

Coming up with a solution that will work, however, is difficult because regional transportation governance is poorly designed, said Stewart.

It’s technically a regional function, but not by the regional district (Metro Vancouver), but by a separate company, he added. Metro does plan regional transportation but the execution is carried out by TransLink.

“We’ve got this weird reality that those functions are done in separate organizations,” said Stewart, who chairs Metro Vancouver’s regional planning committee.

On top of that, the provincial government makes the big decisions noting the Evergreen Extension was initially the next priority after the original Expo line, it wasn’t built until after an extension to Surrey, an extension back to Vancouver and the Canada Line to Richmond were completed.

“You wouldn’t design a system this way. But the main barrier to doing things is TransLink has no source of

funding for this kind of project other than property taxes, and that’s only if the region’s communities agree to use property taxes for regional transportation. It’s a poorly aligned tax, it’s regressive and it doesn’t connect well with regional transportation,” Stewart said.

The report’s suggested models for congestion point charges includes all of the region’s major bridges and the Massey tunnel. But it also identifies North Road, which runs along the boundaries of Coquitlam, Burnaby, Port Moody and New Westminster, as another place to toll.

Clay was unaware of why North Road was included.

But he wonders if there aren’t other congestion points like it that could be considered for tolls, such as St. Johns in Port Moody. It’s a street, he said, that is frequently clogged while a parallel route, Como Lake Road in Coquitlam, flows freely in rush hour.

The model suggests varying prices for the different crossings depending on direction and time of day with higher rates for the rush hours and lower for off-peak hours.

The distance-based charge analysis outlines up to eight zones. The biggest drawback to that system, said the report, is the unknown costs of keeping track of how far cars are driven.

The technology needed for it is developing rapidly which the report said should lower the price tag.

one day this kind of congestion charge could be in place.

Early indications are that drivers could pay upwards of $2,000 a year or more, depending on the type of charge and their driving habits. one proposal would be to charge for distance, costing drivers between $3 to $5 a day to reduce congestion, and

eight zones were used in the analysis.

The other would be a regional congestion point charge, with bridges — and North Road as well as other congested roads — used as collection points for charging drivers. under a scenario in the current study, North Road was added to make sure that drivers who don’t use bridges pay, too.

These ideas are just at the study stage right now and it could be five or more years of study, policy development and implementation before drivers are charged. and woe to the politicians stuck with trying to put forth such a plan — a proposal to

make drivers pay more will take some guts.

This plan is only palatable if it is fair, actually works to cut congestion by 25% as promised, is matched with transit improvements to give people more access, bus fares are kept low and charges, such as the hated fuel tax, are reduced or eliminated. one thing is for certain: traffic may be manageable now, but what about 20 years from now with one million more people in the region?

No one wants the kind of traffic faced by commuters in Los angeles or even Seattle but paying $100 or $200 a month per driver may be a price few are willing to pay for a shorter commute.

Context required to fully appreciate Rice cartoon The Editor, Re. “Rice cartoon on Jewish refugees misses the mark” (Letters, The Tri-City News, May 23).

I’m not an apologist for Ms. Rice but after reading Mr. Dyrkton’s letter, I think another opinion on how her cartoon was perceived is necessary.

Since Trudeau’s coronation as prime minister of Canada, there has been a litany of apologies emanating from his office.

Then we have his never ending proselytizing while on his many trips to foreign countries, lecturing on his perspective of human rights and injustices he thinks need to be righted. It seems Trudeau is all talk but little action when it comes to apologies.

I think Israelis would be a little surprised by this apology, given the fact that former Prime Minister Stephen Harper made it one of his pri-

Falcon Drive is not a straight road, drivers might not see the road conditions ahead.

The Editor, I live in the Eagle Ridge community in Coquitlam and I would like to raise a concern to the traffic situation on Falcon Drive.

Motorists driving on Falcon Drive from Guildford to the Barnet Highway look to be exceeding the 50 km/hr posted speed limit, especially during busy hours.

It looks dangerous because there are many houses and townhouses across from both sides of the street and because

Cities gear up for civic & school board votes Municipal officials are now gearing up for this fall’s civic and school board elections, making appointments and policy changes before the Oct. 20 vote.

Monday, Coquitlam city council gave three readings to its council and election procedure bylaws to change language for the way ballots are marked.

Chief election officer Lauren Hewson told The Tri-City News the company the city leases its vote tabulators from discontinued the “connect the arrow” for voting; instead, voters will check a box to make their mark for a candidate.

As well, because the fall election is now a month earlier, the inaugural meeting for the new council will fall on the first Monday of November rather than December.

Hewson, who was appointed chief election officer earlier this year, will oversee the election with deputy Sean O’Melinn, the city’s legislative services manager.

Last week, Port Coquitlam council named Carolyn Deakin as its chief election officer and Sharlie Eicker as deputy for the local government and board of education race.

INFRASTRUCTURE MONEY Federal and provincial bucks will soon be available to TriCity municipalities and Kwikwetlem First Nation to help pay for better utility infrastructure.

Starting tomorrow (Thursday), the B.C. government will accept applications under the new Environmental Quality Program, a $243-million bilateral initiative designed to improve drinking water, waste water and storm water systems.

The federal government is offering $132 million for the program, which falls under the Green Infrastructure stream of the Investing in Canada plan in B.C. Coquitlam-Port Coquitlam MP Ron McKinnon said the program “is the first of its kind in Canada.”

“I am pleased to work hard with our cities and First Nations to ensure they get their fair share,” he said in a news release issued last week.

The funding news comes as Kwikwetlem First Nation, which has its two reserves in Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, builds a 90-acre business park off Pitt River Road in PoCo. The band, which has numerous land claims in the TriCities, is currently developing a servicing agreement with the city of PoCo to tie into its sanitary, sewer and water pipes; the two agencies plan to meet next month on the matter. jcleugh@tricitynews.com

A Coquitlam non-profit institute that teaches special needs children in the Tri-Cities has been named one of 10 runnerups for a prize of up to $100,000 for new playground equipment.

But to win the BCAA Play Here contest Mediated Learning Academy needs the public to vote online for their entry.

“Our kids need that kind of play to focus themselves and to manage in the classroom,” explained Kathleen Jeffrey, principal of Mediated Learning Academy.

The school supports the education and learning needs of 90 children, almost half of whom have autism and Jeffrey said outdoor activity is important to the students. But the current playground equipment is old and beginning to decay.

The community can weigh in on options for locating a $33 million Education Learning Centre on property School District 43 owns at 1100 Winslow Ave. in Coquitlam.

An open house is planned in the gym at Winslow Centre today (Wednesday) from 6 and 8 p.m. This is an opportunity to view design options, provide comments, ask questions for the project that will eventually house school board and education meeting rooms.

Currently, SD43 staff work at five different locations, and consolidating staff and creating meeting spaces is expected to promote increased collaboration. As well, the district expects to establish an emergency command centre in the new building. The targeted completion date for the project is 2020.

This past weekend, I traveled to Kamloops for the BC Chamber of Commerce AGM along with board chair Catherine Ackerman, vice chair and policy committee chair Randy Webster, and public policy advisor Alex King.

The AGM featured presentations from the major BC political parties: Andrew Weaver, Leader of the Green party; Andrew Wilkinson, Leader of the Liberal party; and the Honourable Carole James, Minister of Finance and Deputy Premier who spoke to their respective positions. We also had a very informative presentation from Shannon Phillips, Alberta Minister of Environment and Parks and Minister Responsible for the Climate Change Office. She spoke on a variety of topics including the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion project where she explained protecting the environment and having economic growth are not mutually exclusive, they can and must go hand-in-hand.

Additionally, there were several panel discussions on relevant topics to BC business. Among them was the impending, always controversial topic of cannabis legalization. A lesser known topic also hit the tables - proportional representation. The highly contentious idea is back and a referendum is expected to take place this fall. It is important for community members to understand the pros and cons of reforming the electoral system. More information on proportional representation will be released over the next couple months.

With close to 100 chambers from across BC in attendance, representing over 30,000 member businesses, this is one of the most important gatherings for business each year. Over 60 policy resolutions were debated and passed at the Annual General Meeting. The BC Chamber has now adopted these policies and will advocate on behalf of chambers and businesses across BC to the provincial and federal levels of government. Prior to the AGM, our policy committee reviews the proposed resolutions, we then vote to support selected resolutions that will enable our business community to prosper. We are proud to take an active role in the process, engaging in conversation and enhancing policy on your behalf.

Efforts to strengthen the volunteer roster come as a new Fraser Health study finds people who are more engaged are healthier and happier. And judging by volunteers who helped transport 10,000 coho from tanks at Mossom hatchery to pens in the Burrard Inlet last week, the Fraser Health

study is right on the money.

“Mossom really is like the song from Cheers, where everyone knows your name,” said Vicki Guzikowski, one of Mossom’s latest volunteer recruits who turned out for the coho salmon release with her daughter Aniela, age 10.

Guzikowski, a former Centennial student who works out of her home, was inspired

to join the volunteer team after visiting the hatchery during one of the regular 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday open house events.

“Once we got up here, we didn’t want to leave,” said Guzikowski.

The family has returned several times to help out and on Friday showed up to assist with the coho release, even though

it meant Vicki was missing school to learn about salmon hatchery management.

In fact, learning about salmon hatchery operations and advocating for the environment are among the several benefits of volunteering, according to Kevin Ryan, BIMES president. see MOSSOM, page 19

Ryan said finding volunteers to learn the ropes is important for succession planning to ensure that Mossom stays viable for the long-haul.

In this latest call-out for volunteers, a number of key posts are being filled, Ryan said, adding “we need key people who can come in and assume responsibility.”

The volunteer jobs include a treasurer, ideal for the retired person with accounting experience, assistant hatchery manager, outdoor environmental educational program assistants, which could be teachers or other educators interested in providing lessons to students from pre-kindergarten to high school.

Fish feeders are also needed, which requires some record keeping, and operations support, to ensure all mechanical, plumbing and electrical operations are in good working order. In some cases, training can be provided. For more information, email kevin_ryan@ telus.net.

Lose yourself this summer with these exciting reads A GOOD READ CHRIS CONROY

ometimes you just want to forget it all, to escape the hubbub of life. So in honour of getting away from it all, here are some suggestions of books that aren’t too heavy — in subject matter, anyway.

Currently, I’m in the middle of Philip Pullman’s first book in his new Book of Dust trilogy, La Belle Sauvage. The story has us returning to the parallel Oxford found in His Dark Materials series, where people are paired with talking animal daemons. The foreboding Magisterium and the mysterious concept of Dust is all present. So is Lyra, but as a wee babe. Instead, the main character is Malcolm, who finds himself drawn into these elements and in a perilous journey to save Lyra. Pullman doesn’t think of the book as a prequel but as a series alongside of His Dark Materials.

Perhaps you are like me and enjoy a good mystery. I stumbled on Robert Galbraith’s books a while back before I knew who “he” really was. Galbraith’s main character is private investigator Cormoran Strike. Ex-military police, he’s a large figure with a prosthetic after losing a leg

in Afghanistan. In the first book, The Cuckoo’s Calling, Strike is called in to investigate the suspicious suicide of supermodel Lula Landry. Strike takes on a young assistant, Robin Ellacott, to run the office side of his business. Galbraith — J.K. Rowling writing under a pseudonym — is superb at creating twists and turns in the story. The Silkworm and Career of Evil are books two and three respectively, and a fourth book is due out later this year.

Biographies can be a great way to lose oneself. I picked up Life by Keith Richards at a friend’s house. Flipping through the photos, I suddenly found myself reading it.

I was drawn in by how alien his world was but yet familiar too from news stories and the music — not to mention how someone could live such a life and still be alive. It is unmis-

takably Richards’ voice with his vernacular, except if you listen to it in audiobook — then it’s Johnny Depp and Joe Hurley narrating.

In The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce, Frank, the shop’s owner, has just the right music to suit his customers’ needs. It’s another time, 1988 in England.

CDs are popular but not with Frank. His shop is vinyl only.

Characters and likeable misfits populate the store. They tell Frank how they feel that day and he finds the music they need for that moment in their lives. But there’s a sadness in Frank, until a girl in green comes into the shop.

Finally, nothing helps one escape like laughing. Find those funny writers and books and devour them. David Sedaris and the late Carrie Fisher make me laugh out loud — to the point of snorting. They both possess a sharp wit and selfdeprecating humour. Try their audiobooks, too, as they both narrate their own work.

Escapist reads are those books that take us away and make us forget the mad, mad world around us. You’ll find these books and your own escapist reads at your local library.

There’s less than a month to go before the end of this academic year. And at several Tri-City schools, students and teachers are gearing up for final performances — many of them on show for the public.

ELEMENTARY

A new teacher at Irvine elementary brings something fresh to the Port Coquitlam school for its year end: a musical production.

Dawn Jetté, who previously worked in the Surrey school district, directs around 50 Irvine students in the Disney show The Lion King: Kids.

In January, Jetté held an open call for the extracurricular program, signing up young actors, fellow teachers (current and retired), parents and even SD43’s energy manager, Marilyn Christensen, to the

They have six performances

but only one viewing for the public: June 7 at 7 p.m. at the school (1390 Laurier Ave., PoCo). Donations will be accepted to Make Change for Africa, a charity that helps to pay for school fees for orphans in Zimbabwe.

Greg Jungco may already have his sights set for Point Park University — where he’s

received a $60,000 scholarship to study dance at the Pittsburgh institution — but before he leaves, the Grade 12 student will star in a dance recital with Ysanne Yong, Natasha Pavan and other students under teacher Natalee Fera, at the Coquitlam high school on June 6 and 7.

Their final farewell will include contemporary, hip hop and Bollywood numbers.

A tour to stir pride about the Pacific Northwest — and to raise the flag about stewardship of the Salish Sea — will stop in Coquitlam next month.

Tiller’s Folly, made up of Coquitlam-raised Bruce Coughlan, Nolan Murray and Laurence Knight, will be joined

by The Wilds, First Nations’ singer-songwriter Ta’Kaiya Blaney and the B.C. Boys’ Choir for a show titled Voices For the Salish Sea, on June 8.

The tour, which comes as the boys’ ensemble marks its 50th year, starts the previous night at the Mount Baker Theater in Bellingham and wraps up with three dates on

Vancouver Island.

Coughlan said Tiller’s Folly made the Evergreen Cultural Centre its only Lower Mainland stop as the band is familiar with the Coquitlam venue, having performed at past Music on the Grill events.

He said organizing about two dozen people for the stage can also have its challenges.

“We would like to do more gigs but it can be difficult getting everyone together,” Coughlan said.

Still, “We all want to share the same message and that’s to promote a sense of awareness of where we are. We’re all in the same ecosystem and we need to take care of it.”

Environmental activism is nothing new for Tiller’s Folly.

Two years ago, the trio and The Wilds recorded Bring Lolita Home — a song penned by Coughlan — to urge lawmakers to return the orca home from the Miami Seaquarium.

Lolita, also known as Tokitae, was captured at the age of six off Whidbey Island, Wash. State, and is now listed as an endangered species. “She shouldn’t be in captivity. What she’s endured is horrific.”

Her story, and the plight of other wildlife in the Salish Sea, will be addressed at the Evergreen concert, which will also included a multimedia presentation.

Sherri Chisholm remembers the first time she heard a Led Zeppelin track.

She was 13, babysitting for a family friend and thinking to herself “Holy mama” as the Immigrant Song sent shivers up and down her spine.

About two decades later, the Centennial secondary grad formed — what is believed to be — the first allfemale Led Zeppelin tribute band in Canada.

Zeppelina was relatively successful, touring B.C. and Alberta and playing about a show a month locally, but — like most bands — it also had its rotation of band members over the years.

Last year, it reinvented itself as Dazed ’n Amused (a play on Zepplin’s song, Dazed and Confused) with Chisholm on drums, Naomi “Freddie” Nash on guitar, Jean Tejkel on bass guitar and Sarah Flanagan on vocals.

On Saturday night, they’ll join Eye Bender and The Eleven Twelves at Pub 340 (340 Cambie St., Vancouver) for a show booked by IMU Productions.

Their set is in the middle of the gig, at 10:30 p.m., lasting for an hour.

“There’s so much to cram in because Led Zeppelin has such a huge, huge amount of repertoire,” Chisholm said, “but we just go from one song to another without stopping.

The crowd loves it.”

Chisholm said the band often has fans telling them how they link certain Zeppelin tunes to childhood memories: a house party, a driving test, a first kiss.

“There are so many that really stick for some people,”

Chisholm said, adding, “That Robert Plant wail, that crazy guitar sound of Jimmy Page.

We don’t pretend to be them but we do try to capture their essence because we can’t see them live anymore.”

Still, the rock musicians have got tickets to see Plant at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver on June 29.

And the Riverside Rapids are excited.

Those are the moods of the three Fraser Valley North high school girls soccer teams as they embark on a whirlwind

provincial championship tournament that begins today (Wednesday) at the University of British Columbia.

Coming off a heart-stopping 3-2 victory in penalty kicks over South Delta in the Fraser Valley championship, Centaurs coach Larry Moro said his squad is “very motivated” to improve on the third place they earned at last year’s provincial finals.

“The girls know they have

a special opportunity here,” he said. “Now we just have to deliver.”

Moro said the tough row his team had to hoe through the Fraser Valleys will serve them well at provincials, where teams play twice a day leading up to Friday’s finals.

“The girls realize they couldn’t coast at any time,” he said. “It was good to get to the needed level of intensity.”

But to achieve success on the pitch, they’ll also have mark up in the midfield to limit scoring opportunities on their own net while taking full advantage of their chances to score, Moro said.

“We have jelled and become a cohesive unit,” he said. “We just need to make sure we bury our chances.”

Blue Devils’ coach Alfonso Napoletano said his team has

“Our team has talent and depth in all positions,” he said.

“If we have our ‘A’ game and stay healthy, we can compete with any team in the province.”

That depth will come into play as the Blue Devils open the tournament with matches

The Western Lacrosse Association is showing that they intend to be as good as their word with the recent announcement that they are partnering with the B.C. company HeadCheck Health to improve the league’s concussion protocol and in-game decision making process.

Training and therapy staff of all seven WLA teams began the 2018 season with the company’s mobile testing app, which will help in assessing potential concussions during the game, as well as record valuable data that can be used in future decision-making.

The app is also being implemented in the BC Junior A as well as the BC Junior Tier 1 lacrosse leagues.

“So much attention in recent years on impact sports has been on the effects of concussions,” WLA commissioner Paul Dal Monte said. “One of the things that we really wanted to make sure we did was develop a strategy and plan to make sure we did everything possible to keep our players safe and give our trainers the tools they need to make sure they are able to conduct better testing and make better decisions in a game and see knowledge, page 27

“Having the depth helps us to rest and keep players fresh and ready for the next game,” Napoletano said.

Riverside may be the local wild card. After finishing the regular season atop the league standings, the Rapids squeaked into their first provincials as the Fraser Valley’s seventh qualifier when they

defeated Enver Creek 2-0 in a decisive showdown for that opportunity.

Rapids’ coach Kenny Jamieson said the excitement amongst his players is palpable, but the key to his team having an impact at the tournament will be maintaining the same gritty, defensive intensity that got them there in the first place.

“We are at our best when we are closing down opponents quickly and minimizing their time on the ball,” Jamieson said.

That tough mindset may

come from the lacrosse background of most of the Rapids’ backend.

“Our defensive line and goalkeeper take pride in their ability to shut down their opponents,” Jamieson said.

Although that resolve may be hobbled a bit by a lingering injury to defender Katelyn Walker who was hurt at Fraser Valleys and may not be ready for provincials. But Jamieson said there are many capable players ready to step in.

“We have a deep team,” he said.

Dal Monte said training staff from around the league have been doing a good job of monitoring and assessing each individual case as it occurs. The HeadCheck app is another tool that will help standardize a league-wide protocol and allow teams to maintain and collect information on each case.

Although unsure of any year-to-year trend in the league regarding concussions, Dal Monte said last year — his first as commissioner — saw fewer than a handful reported.

“It was a small number, and a lot of that has to do with ensuring the way the game is

played, to reduce head contact,” he noted. “As a league we’re paying very, very close attention and are, for at least recent times but certainly my first year, focusing heavily on high sticks and any contact to the head and treating those very seriously from a penalty and discipline perspective.”

HeadCheck CEO Harrison Brown said the goal is to help the WLA continue making the right decisions in cases of a suspected concussion, and allow teams and the league to monitor the data as a means to make future informed decisions.

“During the game [training staff)]will be able to make better decisions, more appropriate and more well-informed decisions.”

He said information gathered will be able to assist teams in improving their evaluation and response to potential concussions.

For Dal Monte, the changes in the sport — and around the sports world — have greatly benefitted from new technology, but part of the solution also involves administering and changing rules to eliminate checks to the head — including heavy penalties to those who level high hits.

“The depth of knowledge is so much deeper, you combine that with technology which affords us with so many tools to do things better and smarter, and we have better equipment than 20 years ago,” said Dal Monte. sports@tricitynews.com

Task force to hit the road for answers to B.C.’s rental housing crisis To help the B.C. government improve the Residential Tenancy Act, the newly appointed Rental Housing Task Force will be touring the province in search of answers to the rental crisis, the group announced May 28.

The task force, chaired by West End MLA Spencer Chandra Herbert, will hit the road in June to consult with all levels of stakeholders, including renters and landlords, as well as owners of manufactured homes and home park operators.

Chandra Herbert said at the press announcement, “We want renters to feel secure in their homes and that the process is fair, just as we want landlords to feel that they are secure in being able to rent out their homes, and that the process is fair… One of the issues is that people break the rules, and there’s no penalty for doing so.”

He added, “It’s not about pro-renters, versus prolandlords – it’s about trying to be pro-rental and helping both renters and housing providers feel secure.”

When asked by media why the task force isn’t conducting a consultation with specific questions, and leaving the discussion open-ended, Chandra Herbert replied, “We’re not trying to frame the debate, we’re letting those who are actually involved in rental housing and living in rental housing provide us with the answers of where we need to look. Often governments will think they know the questions to ask and completely miss the boat. So I’d rather be open-ended and… allow people to engage with each other.”

HUBERMAN, Louis J. June 22, 1938 − May 12, 2018 Louis Joseph Huberman passed away early in the morning of May 12th at Crossroads Hospice Center in Port Moody, British Columbia. He was born June 22, 1938 in Calgary, Alberta. As a young man, he lived in Vancouver. He moved to Coquitlam, where he spent the remainder of his life, in 1963.

Lou was a graduate of the University of British Columbia. He became a teacher in Surrey and taught life skills to reluctant teenagers who may actually be grateful now that they learned how to balance a check book and manage their money.

After that he became known as "The Tax Beast" and spent years preparing taxes for hundreds of grateful clients. He relished depriving Revenue Canada of funds they might have otherwise collected from naive tax payers. He was a master bridge player who loved the game and played several times each week.

Lou leaves his partner of eight years, Jayne Wood, who lovingly took care of him for months prior to his moving into the hospice centre just a week before his death, a daughter Deborah, a son David, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews and nieces.

A gathering to remember Lou will be held on Thursday, June 14th, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex in Coquitlam. .
