uring the past several months, we have learned to live in a new normal due to COVID-19. Businesses have had to adapt quickly and be nimble in order to survive, and we all came together as a community to support these local businesses during tough times. The Tri-City News also had to adapt – we could no longer celebrate the winners at our annual event, but we are able to give back by telling the stories our readers need to hear. A★List 2020 is setting records and our readers came out and voted like never before. The thousands of responses demonstrate how much these businesses mean to all of us and how strongly we all feel to highlight our favourites in over 135 categories across three cities. We have also highlighted how these businesses have given back to their communities during COVID-19. Read how Dinakis Mediterranean Grill Restaurant delivered meals to over 400 frontline workers and the numerous ways all of these businesses profiled were able to give back. ore than 140,000 people call Coquitlam home and it is easy to see why.
From the beaufitul hiking trails and outdoor parks and green spaces to the community events, like Lights at Lafarge and Kaleidoscope Arts Festival, the municipality is an excellent place for families to live, work and play.
These days, the city is undergoing many changes. The addition of SkyTrain in 2016 has connected the municipality to the rest of the region, helping to spur on new shops, cafes and restaurants while leading to a significant increase in townhouse and highrise development. The area also has a thriving private sector, with businesses opening up in newer parts of the municipality, like the City Centre neighbourhood, as well as historic neighbourhoods, like Maillardville and the Austin Heights area. WITH JAI SINGH JAI YOGA COQUITLAM After a day of work, where do you go to unwind, or what do you do to relax?
During my free time, I focus on doing activities that help broaden my mind and increase my knowledge about my passion, which is yoga and meditation. You can find me buried in a book or watching a documentary about yoga and spirituality.
How do you refuel your mind, body and soul?
Prem and I love to spend each morning in meditation and pranayama (yogic breath work) before sunrise, followed by a brisk run and then a grounding yoga session. This way we are honouring our body, mind and soul. I always then look forward to teaching the first yoga class of the day at Jai Yoga Studio.
What’s your favourite outdoor spot in the Tri-Cities to spend time in?
We love spending time in Mundy Park as it’s close to Jai Yoga studio and is a fantastic spot that is so central in the Tri-Cities to get grounded in nature.
Are there any hidden gems you might recommend to new or long-term residents?
Our favourite cafe — Coffee & Vanilla! Family owned and close to Jai Yoga Studio as well. As a family owned business ourselves, we strongly believe in the importance of being a patron at small, family owned, local businesses.
What are your favourite roads or paths to travel during a relaxing afternoon trip in the Tri-Cities?
Travelling along Pipeline Road in Coquitlam is relaxing. You find yourself leaving the city behind and eventually ending up in total nature. It’s a perfect way to have a mini-road trip when you’re short on time.
How have you given back to the community this year, especially in light of COVID-19?
During the lockdown, we continued doing online yoga classes. Since March, when COVID-19 came to B.C., we could see how this situation affected so many people. In the news, we were reading about how anxiety was increasing among the general public. Instead of shutting our doors completely during lockdown, we continued to offer yoga classes to our community through virtual because we knew this is when yoga is needed the most. Since reopening, our doors at the studio in July, our mission to promote authentic Indian-style yoga that is transformational, mind body and spirit has become a strong focus for us — more than ever. Hike through Mundy Park and witness incredible old growth trees and nature in the middle of central Coquitlam is always impressive.
Are there any hidden gems you might recommend to new or long-term residents? After a day of work, where do you go to unwind, or what do you do to relax?
Pivoting Novo into full Surgical & N95 mask production during a global pandemic, then scaling that production upwards to meet Canada’s health-care demand has left very few hours to relax and unwind. There will be plenty of time to relax and unwind once we’ve defeated COVID-19 – and ensured Canadians are protected by legit, lab-tested, and Health Canada-certified PPE, not questionable (foreign-made) garbage.
How do you refuel your mind, body and soul?
Spending what free hours I do have with my family is the best recharge I could ask for. No matter what is happening in the world, playing a game of basketball with my sons Hudson and Leo in our driveway, taking our bulldog Caesar for a late-night walk, and after the craziness of the day has ended, enjoying a late-night nightcap with my wife and partner Julie, talking the day over on our backyard deck is all the fuel I could need to keep going and pushing forward.
What’s your favourite outdoor spot in the Tri-Cities to spend time in?
Rocky Point Park coupled with any of the patios on Brewery Row are the makings for a perfect day and night in the Tri-Cities.
Has to be Golden Boot Italian Café on the south side of Blue Mountain Park. Incredible Italian food. I’ll say their gnocchi is as good, or better, than any I’ve tried in any Italian restaurant from Vancouver to NYC. Legit home-made quality and flavours throughout their menu. During these times, all Tri-City residents should make every effort to support locally owned restaurants bars and breweries.
What are your favourite roads or paths to travel during a relaxing afternoon trip in the Tri-Cities?
The one from my factory that leads home at the end of a long day building a world class PPE factory here in Coquitlam.
How have you given back to the community this year, especially in light of COVID-19?
Throughout the pandemic, we’ve donated many thousands of level three surgical masks to local elementary schools, along with Coquitlam Metro Ford Soccer. ort Coquitlam is a lively city of about 60,000 people spread out in family-friendly neighbourhoods along green belts and the Coquitlam and Pitt rivers. With a thriving downtown that is undergoing a major transformation to promote walkability and cycling along McAllister Avenue and the Donald Street Pathway, free parking and bustling shopping areas on both the north and south sides of the city, PoCo has become a city of note in the region. Local families are also benefiting from new schools — a rebuild of Minnekhada middle school, now complete, and at Irvine elementary school, where construction of a new building will soon begin. Sports and recreation are important to PoCo residents, as evidenced by the popularity of the PoCo-Traboulay trail and city parks, where alcohol consumption was permitted this summer. The city has also been able to open portions of its brand new civic facility — with ice arenas opening up this fall at the Port Coquitlam Community Centre (PCCC) while construction is also well under way for underground parking, large gymnasium and third ice rink at the PCCC. Indeed, the coming year will provide many important milestones for the city, even as COVID-19 continues to circulate. Port Coquitlam residents have a lot of pride for their hometown, where national hero Terry Fox grew up, and the coming months will be no exception.

My friends and family are extremely important to me so it’s important for me to carve out time to spend with them. PreCOVID, I loved getting together for paint night.
What’s your favourite outdoor spot in the Tri-Cities to spend time in?
Oooh, that’s a toss-up between Lafarge Lake, Rocky Point and the Traboulay PoCo Trail.
For people new to our community, is there anywhere you recommend they check out?
The best thing about living in the Tri-Cities is that there is an abundance of activities, festivals, farmers markets, local businesses and events.
Are there any hidden gems you might recommend to new or long-term residents?
My personal favourite is Western Sky Books and they are extremely helpful and I love to unwind with reading.
What are your favourite roads or paths to travel during a relaxing afternoon trip in the Tri-Cities?
I have a very big sweet tooth! So I definitely love to hit up Europe Bakery and Deli, Gabi and Jules, Rocky Point Ice Cream, Matteo’s Gelato & Caffé Divano.
How have you given back to the community this year, especially in light of COVID-19?
During the pandemic I am an essential service worker and also was able to volunteer with Share helping/organizing driving groceries to seniors and for seniors’ phone-a-friend services. I encouraged my office to take part as well. For my business, I try to feature a local small business to help promote them on my social media as I find those businesses are the ones that are really struggling during COVID. I love giving back to the community and have made that part of my “Creating Smiles” mission statement. From every transaction that I do, I donate to the Children’s Miracle Network and I also donate to a charity of my clients’ choosing. Now, more than ever, I find it so humbling being able to help others out.

Lafarge Lake, Rocky Point and Buntzen Lake are some of our favorite outdoor hangouts.
For people new to our community, is there anywhere you recommend they check out?
Well the obvious answer is Dinakis if you’re in the mood for amazing Mediterranean eats. We also have the best happy hour in town.
What are your favourite roads or paths to travel during a relaxing afternoon trip in the Tri-Cities?
The drive out to Buntzen is beautiful — the views are amazing.
How have you given back to the community this year, especially in light of COVID-19?
We thought it was really important to give back to our front-line workers. We delivered meals to over 400 staff at Eagle Ridge Hospital. We also offer a 25% discount to all front-line workers to show our respect and appreciation.

There are so many outdoor activity options like the Coquitlam Crunch and an abundance of trails, Brewer’s Row, Buntzen Lake, White Pine Beach, Old Orchard Park.
Are there any hidden gems you might recommend to new or long-term residents?
Lazy Den Bubble Tea in Port Moody, pockets of shallow water beside Coquitlam river (great for anyone with kids wanting to cool off during the summer), and now due to COVID-19 food wholesalers like The Lobster Guy and Pasta D’Angelo are retailing their amazing food for public purchase. What are your favourite roads or paths to travel during a relaxing afternoon trip in the Tri-Cities?
I love driving around Westwood Plateau and also through Anmore.
