TABLE OF CONTENTS HAWTHORNE IS WHERE THE HEART IS Longtime Port Coquitlam residents probably still call it “Hawthorne Lodge” but it’s so much more — in name, size and the number of people it serves — than that.

Some 43 years in operation, the Hawthorne Seniors Care Community is just that: a community within the larger Tri-Cities community.

When Hawthorne opened in 1973, it had one tower with 166 beds. Today, its campus includes a complex care facility providing 131 residential care beds; 70 assisted-living units; and 75 adult day program spaces.

And just as it has grown in size over the last four decades, Hawthorne has also grown in the form, scope and sophistication of services it provides for the community’s eldest citizens, says Lenore Pickering, executive director of the Hawthorne campus.

For instance, Hawthorne boasts a program for people with advanced dementias; they live in cottages — seven people in each — and have their various care needs met there.

“It doesn’t look like a hospital, it doesn’t look institutional,” Pickering says, adding that the home-like setting helps dementia patients settle and feel comfortable.

And given the variety of housing and care options at Hawthorne, spouses who have different care needs can still be close to one another.

“Then they’re still together,” says Pickering.

“They eat all their meals together. They’re together as much as they want to be.

“We can really serve the needs of the community by it all being on one site.”

Another service Hawthorne provides the community are day programs for seniors, with activities tailored to the individuals who are participating on a given day. Those activities can include trips out to go shopping or to a casino, or days in for socializing, talking about current events or even baking.

Pickering notes that Hawthorne even has bikes with seating on the front so seniors can be pedalled around the campus and PoCo. These are just some of the ways the Port Coquitlam Senior Citizens’ Housing Society has innovated, expanded and progressed over 43 years to create a community of caring.

And in the new year, Hawthorne will be launching its Growing Our Care capital campaign, which will aim to raise $1 million to allow Hawthorne to expand the number of private rooms available as well as update other parts of the facility. RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER
