A DIRECTORY FOR SENIORS IN THE TRI CITIES The local 50 plus seniors community is a lot like the rest of the Tri-Cities, everexpanding and diverse, with a broad range of backgrounds and interests that reflect this unique part of the Lower Mainland.

With that in mind, The Tri-City News is proud to present the 2017, 50 plus Seniors Directory, offering an equally diverse and broad list of services to make life easier and activities to make it more enjoyable. This directory is designed to provide an easy access list of helpful resources in our community, the kind of thing you can keep by the phone for quick reference to connect to the people and programs you need most. But it is also designed to keep you connected to the rest of the Tri-Cities, with opportunities throughout these pages to reach out to fellow 50 plus residents.

If you’re a senior citizen in the Tri-Cities, you’ll find no shortage of recreational activities and social opportunities.

In addition to a variety of local groups whose members sing, dance, play softball or bridge, the cities of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody offer recreation facilities geared for seniors — and we urge you to check out the one most convenient for you:

PORT COQUITLAM

CENTRAL COQUITLAM

Wilson Centre, an accessible one-level facility attached to the PoCo rec complex, is an activity and recreational hub for those aged 50 years or older. There are a number of drop-in activities, from snooker, table tennis, darts and carpet bowling to bingo and a variety of card games.

Wilson also offers registered programs, including those to help you boost your computer and online skills, plus accessible programs to meet the varying needs of the community, such as monitoring blood pressure and health and wellness talks.

Wilson also offers a food program.

PORT MOODY Kyle Centre, located at 125 Kyle St., behind the Port Moody Arts Centre, comprises six rooms that host a variety of recreational programs, including: ballroom dancing, tai chi, chair yoga, fitness programs and bingo, as well as a lunch program, bridge, snooker, mah jong and more. In addition, the following clubs call Kyle home: Snooker Club, Port Moody Rock and Gem Club, Smocking Club and Port Moody Garden Club. COQUITLAM CITY CENTRE Glen Pine Centre is situated between Glen and Burlington drives, across from city hall. Home Renovation Tax Credit for Seniors This is a refundable personal income tax credit to assist with the cost of permanent home modifications that improve accessiblity or help a senor be more functional or mobile at home.

PROVINCIAL HEALTH SERVICES

The maximum credit is $1,000 annually.

The credit can be claimed by seniors, whether they own their home or rent, and by individuals who share a home with a senior relative.

Low Income Grant Supplement for Seniors This supplement allows low income seniors to supplement their home owner grant if its been reduced or eliminated due to high assessed value of their principal residence.

Canadian Cancer Society 1-888-939-3333 www.cancer.ca Provides limited, short-term financial assistance towards certain cancer symptom management medications as well as travel and accommodation to cancer-related medical appointments, through a partnership with the BC Cancer Agency.

HealthLink BC 811 www.healthlinkbc.ca A trained health service representative will answer 8-1-1 telephone calls, and where appropriate, calls will be transferred to a registered nurse, pharmacist or dietitian for further information and advice. The 8-1-1 service can provide assistance with answers to questions about a variety of health topics, help in identifying symptoms and advice on when to seek medical treatment. 8-1-1 has translation services available in over 130 languages.

Medical Services Plan 604-683-7151 Automated Service (24 hours per day, 7 days per week) www.healthservices.gov.bc.ca Offers basic medical coverage to residents of British Columbia. New residents to the province are eligible for coverage after a waiting period of the remainder of the month of arrival plus two full months.

MSP pays for required medical serivces including medically necessary services provided by physicians, dental and oral surgery performed in a hospital, eye examinations if medically required and some orthodontic services. MSP may also pay for diagnostic services including x-rays. For people who receive Premium Assistance, MSP also pays the cost of a combined annual limit of 10 visits for chiropractic, massage therapy, naturopathy, physical therapy, acupuncture and nonsurgical podiatry when performed by a practitioner enrolled with MSP. (MSP pays $23 for each visit, patient is responsible for any charge over and above.)

Among the services not covered

by MSP are dental services (other than dental surgery performed in a hospital), eyeglasses, hearing aids and other equipment or appliances, services of counsellors or psychologists, medical examinations, certificates or tests required for things like driving, life insurance. Please visit the website for a full list. To be covered by MSP you must apply and pay monthly premiums. If your income is low and you are a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and have lived in Canada for the last 12 months you may be eligible to receive premium assistance. Gold cards are automatically issued prior to your 65th birthday.

Home and Community Care provides a range of health care and support services for eligible residents who have acute, chronic, palliative or rehabilitative health care needs. Home Health is a designated responder to abuse and neglect of the elderly.

The range of services includes home based services such as assessment and case management, nursing, rehabilitative Occupational Therapy and Occupational therapy, home support, palliative care, and community based services such as adult day programs, residential care services, hospice and short stay treatment and assessment centres.

Home Health Services Home Health offers a variety of athome and community programs and services depending upon your care needs and eligibility. To identify your most appropriate care options, Home Health professionals consider the needs related not only to your physical symptoms, but also to other dimensions of your life such as your emotional well-being and the support available through your family, friends and close community ties.

While some Home Health clients require only specific short-term medical treatments, others have more complex and ongoing health needs requiring the careful coordination of a number of integrated services. Shortterm support helps you recover from a hospital procedure or condition, while longer term programs provide ongoing care to enable you to maintain your independence and remain at home comfortably.

The Centre is an activity and recreational centre for adults, with membership opportunities for those aged 50 years or better.

An annual membership is $18.75 and provides access to subsidized drop-in and registered program fees, services, and special events.

There are a number of drop-in activities including snooker, table tennis, darts, carpet bowling, bingo, and a variety of card games. Members pay $1 to drop in and non-members pay $3.

Offers light housekeeping, transportation to medical appointments, minor home repair, food support, grocery shopping and friendly visiting to help seniors continue to live at home and remain independent ■ Light housekeeping, transportation and home repair have fees that are reduced based on household income.

Welcoming Seniors Spaces (for people 75+)

Organizes regular group meetings where seniors can provide and/or access support, and connect with other community members.

■ Recruits and trains outreach volunteers who will connect with seniors and help them get the needed service/s.

Supports isolated seniors by providing transportation service to get them to community centres and other locations where they can access resources and increase their community connections. The service is provided by volunteers.

Seniors gather at the Clarke St. Family Resource Centre to pick up their food hamper, access information and other needed support, and connect with other community members. Seniors meet bi-weekly on Friday 9:30 – 11:30 at 2615 Clarke St., Port Moody

Seniors Support Group (for people 60+) ■

Offers a discussion group for seniors who want to gain and/or give supportThe group runs two or three cycles per year.

Tri-Cities seniors also participate in other SHARE programs that serve adults: Legal Advocacy, Counselling, Thrift Store, English Practice Groups, and Housing. Monday is seniors day at the SHARE Thrift Store. Seniors get 50% discount on clothes and houseware items.

Further, cognitive impairment with respect to driving represents a growing public safety issue as BC’s population ages. If you live within the TransLink service area, HandyCard allows travel at Concession fare prices on the bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express, and if someone needs to travel with you to provide assistance, can travel with you for free.

HandyCard is for travel on conventional transit and can’t be used on HandyDART. If your trip includes HandyDART, you’ll pay regular adult fare rates.

Concession fares are eligible for HandyCard holders, seniors 65 years and older with photo identification proving age, HandyCard customers can now use an orange Concession Compass Card to pay for travel on bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express. Instead of paying with paper monthly FareCards and FareSavers, you can now load passes and money onto your Concession Compass Card.

Please note: if you already have a Compass Card through another program (such as BC Bus Pass, U-Pass BC, or CNIB), please feel free to travel with your existing program card.

Remember to carry your HandyCard at all times when travelling with an attendant.

HandyDART’s service provider (MVT Canadian Bus Inc.) provides a central customer service team that is available 18 hours a day and operates over 300 buses.
