Last year alone, he championed awidevariety of issues, such as supportingaGreen New Deal for Canada,urging the federal government to introduce apublicuniversal Pharmacare program,introducing legislation that takes aim at hate symbols and hate crimes,starting a petition againsttheTrans Mountain pipeline expansionand calling fora halt to that project andadvocating for anational dental care program

Theseare buta few of theexamples of instances where thelongtime New West resident has lent his political expertise andpersonal time to help build abetter community here at home –and acrossthe country.

In March, the Liberal PartyofCanada and the New Democratic Partyin Parliament signed a“supply and confidence agreement” thatcommitsthem to working together on key policy areas, including health,affordabilityand climatechange. Through the agreement, thefederalNDP will supportthe Liberal governmentonconfidence votes and budgetarymatters –inexchangefor initia-

tives that advance someof itspriorities,such as dental care.

“Besidesdentalcare, a pharmacare plan is closer to becoming areality for

Canadiansstruggling to afford their medication,” Julian said after supporting the federal budget “After the Liberalsliterallyabandoned their Phar-

macare promise in their 2021 platform,because of theNDP,the budget includesthe stepsmentioned in our agreement with the governmentto move towards auniversal and national Pharmacare program. New Democrats will continueto fight for youand your family.”

AnvilCentreisahubformakingconnections

Anvil Centrehas become one of the go-to places for making connections in NewWestminster.

With amix of cultural, conference and community spaces, the city-owned facility has becomea hub of activity since opening its doorsinSeptember 2014.

Built at acost of more than $40 million, Anvil Centre has hosted awide variety of events from conferences to filmproductions to blood donor clinic and COVID-19vaccination clinics–ata time when gathering restrictions prevented conferences and other large gatheringsfrom taking place.

The main floor of the building at 777 Columbia St. is home to theTourism NewWestminster visitor information centreand boutique conference space –anarea that’sbeenused for gatheringsand celebrations of all types and sizes

The main floor has also playedhost to many special events, from Family

Dayactivities for folks of allages toWinter Celebrationsmarking the coming of the holidayseason.

Upstairs, visitorswill find the state-of-the-art Anvil CentreTheatre, a community artspace,the NewWestminster Museum and Archives and theCanadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

That’salsowhere they’ll findthe New Media Gallery,which features contemporaryexhibitions from artists from around theword.

The fourth floor features avarietyofstudios and practice rooms, many of which are used forarts andcultural andother community programs

HyackFestivalholdsaplaceinNewWesthearts

The HyackFestivalAssociationhas beenhosting awide varietyofevents to celebrateand showcommunity spirit since 1971 –and this year is no different.

Floats, marchingbands, community groups,mascots, performanceartists and more will fillthe streets of NewWestminster forthe 2022 Hyack International Paradeon Saturday, May28.

“Weare just so excited to be back doingwhat we love to do,and that’s bringing the community together,”saysSheila Sharma, executivedirector of the NewWestminster HyackFestival Association. “At atime when we really,really need it, we are happy to provide a platformfor that.”

COVID-19 restrictions mayhaveprevented the association from holding

itsbig parade, butit still foundpandemic-friendly ways to bring thecommunity together by hosting drive-thruand porch parades.

With restrictions having eased,the associationis ready to welcomein-town and out-of-town visitors (including theWenatchee AppleBlossomFestivalinWashington State, theRoyal Rosarians from Portland and the City of Kelowna)tojoininon this year’sparade fun.

The Hyack Festival Association didn’t geta chance to commemorate theparade’s50th anniversaryin2021,soit’scelebrating that milestone at this year’sevent.

The Hyack International Parade willbegin on EighthAvenue, between Eighthand Sixth streets, proceed down SixthStreet and head intothe homestretch on QueensAvenue, endingatQueen’s Park.

Butwait –the fun

doesn’t stopthere.

The Hyack Street Fest will be held inTipperary Park (nexttocitycall) on paradeday.Inpastyearsit washeld uptown, butit’s making amovetoaroomiersite near theend of the parade route.

“It’s going to be fantastic.It’sgoing to be a whole dayofevents –food trucks, marketvendors, entertainment.We are going to have some kids’games,”Sharma says

“It’sgoingtobea great day.”
