It hasn’t been an easy two years for Burnaby businesses, with COVID-19 radically disrupting the local economy.
Yet as I noted in the A-List magazine just a few months after the pandemic first shook up local enterprises, we all came together quickly as a community. City businesses have continued to show exceptional resilience and resourcefulness during the long ordeal, and have emerged stronger than ever. Besides being the hometown of celebrities such as Michael Bublé, Burnaby is probably best known for its stunning natural environment and a diverse culture, which help make the city one of the most attractive places in the province for people to live and work.
With a full quarter of its land dedicated to parks and open spaces, Burnaby boasts some of British Columbia’s most outstanding public greenspaces, including Burnaby Mountain, which offers stunning views, picnic spots and play areas, and city favourite Deer Lake Park, with its wetlands, forest trails, boating and fishing. Newcomers have helped
make the city among the most culturally diverse in Canada, with more than half of Burnaby residents speaking a first language other than English or French. This mix of backgrounds helps contribute to Burnaby’s thriving arts scene, showcased at renowned venues like the Burnaby Art Gallery, Shadbolt Centre for the Arts and the Michael J. Fox Theatre and in annual events like the Burnaby Roots and Blues Festival. The city’s rich heritage is also on display at the popular openair Burnaby Village Museum, the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre, with its focus on Japanese-Canadian history and culture.
The city’s business community also reflects its diversity, with a mix of sectors strongly underpinning the economy. Among them is the technology space, as highlighted by the Burnaby-headquartered EA Vancouver, home to one of the world’s biggest videogame development and testing operations. Burnaby has a thriving retail sector, too, with its unique Heights shopping destination, and Metropolis at Metrotown, B.C.’s biggest – and Canada’s fifth-biggest -shopping centre.
Also playing an important part in the life and work of the city is its role as a centre of learning, with post-secondary institutions like Simon Fraser University and the British Columbia Institute of Technology establishing international reputations for excellence.
