It’s one of the highlights of the year at the Tri City News. As you may recall, we offered online ballots and $500 gift card from the Coquitlam Centre as incentive for you, our loyal readers, to cast your votes for The Best in the Tri Cities in over 170 business categories. We had almost 2,500 voters this year! While our contest does not qualify as a scientific survey, the level of participation does lend credibility to the outcome, as do our strict rules on how we count and qualify the ballots. Each ballot must contain a minimum of 20 votes, only one ballot per person (ip address) were accepted. I want to offer my sincere congrats to the businesses who received this year’s A List award. They are most deserving of our recognition as the Best in the Tri Cities. But don’t just take our word for it; visit as many of the winning businesses listed in this keepsake magazine and decide for yourself! ig changes are afoot in Port Coquitlam’s downtown core with the recent completion of the first phase of the massive renovation, rebuilding and renaming of the PoCo rec centre to the Port Coquitlam community centre. A true centre of community, it already houses the new Terry Fox Library as well as ice rinks and space for seniors, and will eventually, when completed, boast a pool, gym, another rink, a courtyard, underground parking and other amenities. It’s situated for easy access to transit, downtown and neighbouring homes as well as multi-family housing planned for adjacent land. And combined with the Leigh Square arts village located nearby, next to city hall, it will help make for a vibrant downtown PoCo. Check out the community centre, Leigh Square facilities and area businesses, along with the many businesses on PoCo’s north side. As a dog lover, are there any trails or parks you love to take your pooches to in Port Coquitlam?
As much as we know you love dogs, are there any other activities you really enjoy doing in Port Coquitlam?
As a dog lover, I enjoy taking my dogs to Colony Farm Regional Park as the trails are wide and the scenery is beautiful.
I enjoy hiking with my dogs and working out with Liz Naccarato at the F.I.T. Academy. She is very knowledgeable and supportive, and her workouts are balanced and challenging.
After a long day, where do you head to refuel? Mind? Body? Soul? And pups? As I am quite a homebody, at the end of the day, I just like to go home to be with my Weimaraners.
For people new to Port Coquitlam, is there anywhere you recommend they check out? For people new to Port Coquitlam, I recommend they check out The Yoga Chef. It’s a family run business close to Dapper Dog that serves healthy, delicious meals made with quality ingredients.

I’m always working, so I haven’t really enjoyed too many other restaurants. When I finally do have some time, I’m really hoping to check out the Cat & Fiddle Sports Bar & Restaurant.
After a long day in the kitchen, where do you head to refuel? Mind? Body? And, soul? Since the restaurant opened on 2017, I have been working non-stop. This is a kind of challenging to my soul. So, I often go to my favorite bar, Joey Coquitlam, to unwind and have a beer.
As much as we know you love being a restaurateur, are there any other activities you really enjoy doing in Port Coquitlam? Yup! I really love the Peace Park. It has a trail through the water. Whenever I have something to think about, I visit there and walk around. As the name of the park, it’s a really peaceful place.
Thanks so much, Daniel. Finally, do you have any advice or words of wisdom? I’m not old enough to have words of wisdom, but I have a belief: Early training means more than late training. Sometimes, I feel sick of working, but the words remind me that it is my time to work. Of course I complain of working, but I also try to think positively with the words.

A
resident of Coquitlam 40 years ago would be hardpressed to recognize their city today. Forty years ago — in 1979, the year Coquitlam Centre mall, the region’s largest shopping destination, opened its doors for the first time — little of what we see today on the city’s north side was even imagined. SkyTrain, thousands of houses and townhouses, a bundle of highrises, cafes and restaurants aplenty, even an expanded mall were likely unthinkable then. But just as Coquitlam’s population has ballooned over those four decades — most especially in the last 10 years or so — so have amenities for its citizens. Town Centre Park, for instance, is a jewel used by thousands each day and many more for special events such as Canada Day celebrations and Lights at Lafarge. In the private sector, businesses have blossomed, both in the newer City Centre and in older areas, such as along Austin Avenue. And some of those are celebrated in The Tri-City News A-List for 2019. For people new to Coquitlam, is there anywhere you’d say they just have to check out?
I like any opportunity to get outside! In Coquitlam, I enjoy the hiking trails, and the Coquitlam Crunch in particular. I find that after a busy day with patients, it feels great to go outside and exercise!
A leisurely stroll around Lafarge Lake anytime is great, but particularly at Christmas time. I always love seeing the light display and look forward to sharing that with my family every year. During the summer, I would always recommend the Farmers Market! I love supporting local businesses and find the quality and selection to be outstanding
Where do you head to refuel? Mind? Body? Soul? I love unwinding at the gym - going to spin class a few times a week allows me to recharge and I find that it really helps me after a busy day - but time with family is my favourite way to unwind and refuel. My three young boys never cease to amaze me and keep me grounded.
Are there any hidden gems you can recommend to long-term residents? My favourite hidden gem in Coquitlam is the number of trails intertwined throughout the city. Whether it be a hike along the Coquitlam River to Crystal Falls or a brief forest walk along Hoy Creek. I love the way Coquitlam is still very much part of nature.

Are there any hidden gems you might recommend to long-term residents?
Being in the retail sector and in business for over 20 years, I find that my days can become long and drained. Luckily for me, The John B. Pub one of my favorite places to go to unwind and enjoy a great after work cocktail. Also they have hands down one of the best happy hour menus of drinks and food in Metro Vancouver.
In terms of food and drinks, The John B. Pub is probably one of the best. Another great place for authentic Italian food is a place called the Golden Boot on Ridgeway and Nelson (have to try the Ferrari Pizza).
Where do you head to refuel? Mind? Body? And soul? Honestly, if there is a passion that you have always wanted to do, then pursue that! I’m an licensed optician by day and I enjoy it, but for me I love music and in particular DJ ing. My outlet that lets me recharge and refuel is my passion for playing music and mixing tracks that people love. I’m so fortunate that the local John B. Pub allows me to DJ at their wonderful establishment on occasion and I am grateful they have given me this privilege!!
For people new to Coquitlam, is there anywhere you recommend they check out? On top of being an business owner as an optician on Austin Avenue, I also serve as a director for the Austin Heights Business Improvement Association (AHBIA). Coquitlam is a large city and has a lot to see but I feel the charm and the local independent businesses along the Austin and Ridgeway corridor offer a very unique element that’s worth seeing. There are very few big box or chain stores and the service and products you will see are definitely very cool.

Coquitlam has probably the most hidden gems of all the cities in Metro Vancouver. Blue Mountain Park is one of them. It’s a beautiful place right in the city that offers a quick getaway without leaving the actual city. Others include Como Lake, Lafarge Lake and Coquitlam’s very own hike, The Coquitlam Crunch.

Port Moody is a very small city. It’s great because it really is possible to know so many of the creatives who love being here. And this place has always, and will continue to, inspire artists of all kinds with its natural beauty and small-town feel.
After a long day instructing, where do you head to refuel? Mind? Body? And soul? I love going into Silk Art Gallery, and Willow and Wallflower, and Vivio Flower Gallery. And I’m always hungry, so I love St Street Grill, Green Moustache Organic Café and Original’s Mexican Café (and miss the Gallery Bistro Café!). Of course, the Shoreline Trail linking Rocky Point and Old Orchard parks is magical.
For people new to Port Moody, is there anywhere you recommend they check out? Old Orchard Park was my “backyard” growing up

here and I find it such a peaceful and beautiful place any time of year. The Bert Flinn trails are also great.
As much as we know you love the arts, are there any other activities you really enjoy doing in Port Moody? I feel so lucky that when I look out of my dance school office window, I see gorgeous trees, mountains and sky – and my dance school is on the biggest and busiest street in the city. I love to walk and appreciate that this is not one of those suburbs that is 100% geared towards vehicles. You can go for walk on the street – even the busiest one!
Thanks so much, Cori. Finally, do you have any advice or thoughts? I’m so proud that Port Moody is committed to becoming carbon neutral. When you live and work in such a beautiful place, it should be easy to remember that our environment is a living, breathing thing that we need so we can to continue to live and breathe!
