PROMOTING HEARING HEALTH

PERSONALIZED CARE, AND INNOVATIVE HEARING SOLUTIONS

It’s not the kind of ride that anyone exactly wants to be going on, but it’s often precisely the kind of ride that’s needed.

Cynthia Gillanders recalls her grandmother’s experience of increasing social isolation with both heartbreak and surprise: heartbreak because, naturally, it was upsetting to witness someone you love experience feelings of loneliness—and surprise because her grandmother said she often felt alone even when she was surrounded by people she loved and who cared for her.

“She was just so quiet—and she was always such a social person,” says Gillanders.

The culprit, however, turned out to be deceptively simple if not profoundly life-altering: her grandmother was experiencing hearing loss. Suddenly, says Gillanders, the affable, fun-loving matriarch of the family just wasn’t the same dynamic presence in

social situations she once was. She was there, sure, but she wasn’t really all there, at least not the way she used to be.

“That just broke my heart. She just wasn’t as engaged anymore,” says Gillanders. “Hearing is a huge component of how we interact with people.”

In an effort to ensure others can keep that essential component of social life intact for as long as possible, Gillanders founded Inlet Hearing in Port Moody in 2022, a vocation she came to rather naturally having already spent more than 20 years in the health and wellness field.

In addition to her experience dealing with her grandmother’s untreated hearing loss and the toll this had on her, Gillanders was also inspired by a series of interactions that followed her volunteer work with numerous hearing-care events and institutions, where she directly saw how life-changing

improved hearing could be.

“I saw firsthand how people could get help and the difference it made. People would just light up when they could all of a sudden hear better. It really struck me,” she says.

Now, Gillanders leads a dedicated team that delivers personalized care, innovative hearing solutions, and ongoing support to the community. When Gillanders or her team aren’t busy fitting clients for hearing instruments or counselling them on their personal hearing needs, they are making sure they are offering ongoing supports.

“Hearing care isn’t just a one-time appointment,” she observes.

Noting how hearing health forms an essential part of our overall health because it allows us to more fully partake in the world around us, Gillanders emphasizesrecent advances in hearing technology and the importance of staying at the forefront of her field ❱❱

Promoting Hearing Health

through continued education and collaborations with audiologists and hearing researchers.

Compared to the recent past, for example, Gillanders highlights how hearing instruments are more comfortable, discreet, and offer experiences that are more authentically attuned to “natural” hearing. Modern devices also tend to have superior connectivity and performance, meaning not only can hearing aids now faithfully pick up the world around you, they can also interface with devices such as smartphones and Bluetooth-enabled gadgets to make everything from watching TV to conducting phone calls a more pleasant experience. In other words, these aren’t your grandparents hearing devices.

“Hearing aid manufacturers

“I BECAME INVESTED IN HEARING HEALTH AFTER WITNESSING HER GRANDMOTHER’S STRUGGLES WITH HEARING LOSS.”

are constantly researching and upgrading their technologies,” says Gillanders. “They are constantly advancing.”

While her mission is to help the community hear better so that they feel included, confident, and connected again, Gillanders once again turns to the personal when referring to the impact of these technological advances. Recalling how when her father experienced hearing loss their usual lengthy phone calls turned into quick

one-and-done sessions, Gillanders says how when she fitted him for hearing aids everything changed: their five-minute exchanges returned to hour-plus loving conversations.

“He would phone me regularly again and it was a night and day difference—now he could truly hear me.”

TINY SOCIAL ROBOTS

A.I.-ENABLED MACHINES COULD IMPACT CARE WORK, AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

With Canada’s population aging and recent studies pointing toward the importance of sustained social connection as a vital necessity, many researchers are looking at the possibility of tiny robots to deliver big results.

“I could foresee in the next decade a lot more robotics in people’s lives,” says Dr. Lillian Hung, the Canada Research Chair in Senior Care and

an associate professor of nursing at the University of British Columbia. “While they are not yet part of everyday life, there’s an opportunity with the rise of A.I. and how it can be a powerful tool when it’s being designed into these social robots.”

The concept of what Hung refers to as “social robots”—or, socially assistive robots (SARs)—is relatively newfound in Canada; however, social robots for sustaining and

enhancing the everyday social and psychological well-being of seniors and older adults have been around for decades in places such as Korea, Japan, and Denmark. A common example of such a robot is PARO, an A.I.-enabled machine shaped like a pet seal that is intended to produce a calming effect in people while providing emotional and social support. “I think A.I. offers a lot of opportunities,” says Hung. “With machine learning in these robots

they learn about the environment, they learn about people; in the beginning, the robot will be a little bit slow and will try and understand—and then it adjusts.”

Through Hung’s research lab at UBC, she has partnered with care homes in the Lower Mainland to learn more about the needs of older adults, caregivers, staff members, and families—and in particular, the ways in which technology can be responsibly leveraged to offer positive solutions, from encouraging folk to exercise to remembering their favourite songs and playing them on command. This project—titled “Tiny Robots: Exploring Intergenerational Interactions with Tiny Social Robots”—explored how little machines called EMO and AIBI could support intergenerational connections between older adults and university students.

“YOU CAN TOUCH IT, YOU CAN HUG IT— I THINK THAT TACTILE SENSATION IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE.”

DR. LILLIAN HUNG, THE CANADA RESEARCH CHAIR IN SENIOR CARE AND AN ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF NURSING AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA

“The cost of the robots has traditionally remained very high—but newer robots are more affordable,” says Hung, adding that social robots have unlimited patience and empathy when it comes to the often challenging and repetitive tasks of caregiving. While Hung does not suggest that social robots should replace the centrality of person-on-person connection, she wants people to

be open to the idea that social robots could offer useful tools when it comes to healthy aging, especially when attempting to age in place which can be beneficial for independence but comes with a greater risk of social isolation.

“You can touch it, you can hug it—I think that tactile sensation is very important for a lot of people,” says Hung. ◆

REGENCY MEDICAL IN BURNABY IS CELEBRATING ITS 60 TH ANNIVERSARY

When it comes to the home health business, Burnaby’s Regency Medical is testament to the idea that some things change and, crucially, some things never do.

“The products changed—they got lighter and better—but the needs of the people haven’t changed. The needs are still the same, but the way that the world is purchasing them is different, too,” explains Shawna Bedard, co-owner at Regency.

Shawna, along with Greg Bedard and their son, Braden, are wellpositioned to make such claims: Regency has been in business since 1966 and, amazingly, it’s been owned by the same family for the entirety of its 60-year run—and counting.

This is to say, they’ve seen it all.

were purchasing for their parents in their 80s—and now their own kids are in purchasing for them as they’ve aged,” says Shawna, on Regency’s intergenerational customer base.

Greg’s father first opened Regency Medical as a pharmacy-focused business in New Westminster in the mid-’60s, when Greg was seven years old. In addition to Greg’s

father’s pharmaceutical knowledge, he found that local doctors and other medical specialists were coming in looking for medical

and home health products that could assist their aging patients, to which Greg’s father discovered he was particularly adept at finding and procuring.

“He’d find out some information on where you could get crutches, for example,” explains Greg, adding that next came canes: “He kept buying things as people kept asking for them—we were kind of knowing for looking for products for people who had a hard time finding things.”

Regency relocated to Burnaby in the 1980’s, at which point Greg found himself involved in the business in various fronts, including building aluminum wheelchairs in Vancouver after seeing these lightweight aluminum wheelchairs being built in California. He said, “Why not build them here?” An aluminum chair weighs 33lbs vs a steel chair at 55lbs. Nowadays

“OFTENTIMES, THE ‘KIDS’ IN THEIR 40S WERE PURCHASING FOR THEIR PARENTS IN THEIR 80S—AND NOW THEIR OWN KIDS ARE IN PURCHASING FOR THEM AS THEY’VE AGED.”

modern carbon fibre chairs can weigh as little as 15lbs.   “That was unheard of in his day,” says Braden.

As Braden explains, home health products—from physicians supplies to sports braces, power wheelchairs, and scooters—have become more streamlined, technologically advanced, and specialized as the decades have progressed.

Since its inception, Regency has expanded the scale of its offerings by selling its wares wholesale to medical establishments as well as supporting long-term care and rehabilitative organizations; however, the core of its business remains rooted in its core philosophy to put people first, whether that’s an individual who comes into their massive 6,000-square-foot showroom to shop around or helping to ensure local rehab centers, assisted living facilities, care homes, occupational therapists and physical therapists are properly equipped and supported.

“Come to our store: touch it, try it out,” emphasizes Shawna. “We have a lot of staff who have been there for 30 years, and they have the product knowledge to tell them what product works best to suit their needs—you can’t get that online.” Regency Medical is located at 4437 Canada Way, Burnaby.
