he past year has been a struggle for our residents, businesses and organizations in the Tri-Cities. But we’ve managed to come together, as always, to show our hometown pride by lifting each other up. The Tri-City News has taken a leadership role with this community renewal. Along with the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce and other agencies, we joined a new collective called Tri-Local to help spur economic growth by providing educational support and incentives. We also continued to sponsor local events and campaigns, and tell the stories that are important to our readers. For this A-List edition, we heard from our corporate and non-profit leaders about how they made a difference. They told us about their valuable work. They also told us about what businesses they frequent and why. And they told us what it means for them to be chosen for the A-List, an annual publication based on thousands of our readers’ online votes. They are humbled and honoured by your generosity and thank you for continuing to patronize their programs and services. In turn, they’ve also paid it forward. Read about one of our top award winners, Coquitlam lawyer Don Drysdale, who volunteers legal advice to seniors, or Thoma Doehring who, through Tri-City Paint & Decorating/ Thoma Design, fundraises for SHARE, the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation and the Crossroads Hospice Society. ituated at the east end of the Burrard Inlet, Port Moody is the smallest city in the Tri-Cities and serves about 35,000 residents.

It was named after Richard Clement Moody, B.C.’s first lieutenant governor and commander of the Royal Engineers, a British contingent that was sent to survey and bring order to the new colony during the 19th century. Transportation forms the backbone of Port Moody. In 1879, it was declared the western terminus of CP Rail before a branch line to Vancouver was built in 1887; however, today, shipping by water remains active under Pacific Coast Terminals, a deep-sea bulk loading station. Governed by Mayor Robert Vagramov and council, Port Moody also has the only hospital in the Tri-Cities: Eagle Ridge Hospital, which is the largest employer in the municipality. As well, the City of the Arts has a vibrant artistic and cultural scene, with many artisans and musicians calling Port Moody home and showing their work at PoMoArts.

And its annual festival line-up is legendary, drawing crowds from across the Lower Mainland for its Golden Spike Days, RibFest and fingerling gatherings that are hosted by the Port Moody Ecological Society.

What Tri-City businesses do you frequent? SHARE relies on the support of our local business community in order to deliver many of our programs. Many of our services do not receive government funding, and so it is only through the support of local businesses that we can meet the needs of our most vulnerable community members through our Food Bank, Advocacy Programs, English Language Practice Groups and more. We are also so grateful to the local businesses who participate in our fundraising events by donating gift cards, food and funding. What are your favourite things to do in the TriCities? Besides talking about SHARE any chance I get, I love spending as much time as possible in nature, and also meeting new community members whenever possible.

Where is your favourite place to go in the Tri-Cities? A majority of the staff and volunteers working at SHARE also live in the Tri-Cities, so they are an endless resource for fun places to go! As someone who has only lived in this community for a few years, I really appreciate their recommendations. As a mom to two young kiddos, we spend a lot of time at Gates Park on the soccer pitches, at the Hyde Creek Recreation Centre pool, Terry Fox Library and at our amazing parks like Rocky Point, LaFarge Lake and Minnekhada.

ith a population of more than 160,000 residents — and growing — Coquitlam is one of biggest cities in the province, boasting the third largest school district in B.C.

Its territory spans from the Fraser River to Burke Mountain and includes part of the kwikwetlem reserve, as well as the historical səmiq´wə¿elə/Riverview Lands. Governed by Mayor Richard Stewart and council, Coquitlam is robust for business. In fact, the community got its start more than 130 years ago when Frank Ross and James McLaren opened Fraser Mills, which would soon become the largest lumber mill in the British Commonwealth. Today, construction is everywhere with high-rises going up along the Evergreen Extension corridor, older houses in Austin Heights being updated with coach homes and new subdivisions springing up in the northeast neighbourhoods. Commerce remains healthy in City Centre, too, with Coquitlam Centre mall as the area anchor.

What does it mean to you and your business to be an A-List recipient? It’s an honour to be recognized by the community for the work that we do. We strive to deliver to our clients quality, timely service. And this recognition means to us that we are meeting that goal. How do you give back to the community? Early in my career, I focused on public legal education delivering volunteer talks on behalf of the Peoples Law School, School District 43, the Public Libraries and various seniors groups. I have volunteered (for about 20 years) at Dogwood Pavillion one afternoon a month (until the COVID-19 pandemic) to provide legal advice — on a volunteer basis — to seniors. My career was focused on seniors from the beginning days of my practice. I have now joined the ranks. What are your favourite things to do in the Tri-Cities? I enjoy the restaurant scene, which is continuing to improve; I particularly like the Korean, Japanese and Italian restaurants, Brewers Row in Port Moody and, of course, Joey Coquitlam and the John B Pub. Where is your favourite place to go in the Tri-Cities? My wife and I back on Mundy Park, an absolute jewel in our community. We also frequent Rocky Point Park in Port Moody and the paths along the Coquitlam River in Port Coquitlam.

What does it mean to you to be an A-List recipient? I am honoured for myself and our non-profit event to be considered an A-List recipient. We are proud to be hosting this event in the City of Coquitlam for the past 39 years. Coquitlam is ideally situated in the Lower Mainland with a great outdoor festival site with easy public access via SkyTrain. This attracts attendees from throughout the region and further abroad. Our new venue at Lafarge Lake Park is ideal for our event, and we thank the City of Coquitlam for having the foresight to develop this one-time rock quarry into a beautiful festival site that continues to expand and meet the needs of our festival. This community support from the city is vital to our success. The award recognizes that our event contributes to the overall “fun” that city residents expect. What Tri-City businesses do you frequent? Our event counts on the local business community to provide the needs of a community festival, including grocery stores Thrifty’s and No Frills and Save On Foods; hardware stores Rona, Home Depot and Princess Auto; fuel from Petro Canada; rental space from Imperial Storage; volunteer T-shirts from Textile Innovations in Port Coquitlam; award medals from Coronation Recognition; vehicle rentals from JTM Automotive (U-Haul); Domino’s Pizza; Mary Hill Town Pantry; and Pit Stop Portables of Port Coquitlam. How do you give back to the community? Organizing and planning the volunteer-run ScotFestBC is my way of giving back to the community. This involves engaging people on all levels, from elected and non-elected city officials, volunteers from throughout the community and recruiting organizing committee members who run the 40 52

individual programs of ScotFestBC. By bringing all of these people and elements together, we are able to provide a fun, safe family-event that has something for everyone in the community. What are your favourite things to do in the TriCities? Enjoying the parks and green spaces is one of my favourite activities, including hiking and playing the bagpipes in a peaceful, secluded area of part of the kwikwetlem reserve, as well as the historical səmiq´wə¿elə/Riverview Lands. Other enjoyable activities in Coquitlam include visiting the libraries, restaurants in downtown Coquitlam, the Festival du Bois and Kaleidoscope Festival. Lights at Lafarge is great to see our wonderful festival venue in a winter setting. Where is your favourite place to go in the TriCities? My favourite place in Coquitlam is Mundy Park. I live nearby and this beautiful park is where I can relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of work and everyday life. In winter, if it’s cold enough, skating on the lakes, or walking the trails and enjoying the tranquility and solitude of a natural second-growth forested environment in the middle of a busy city. Mundy Park is also great for softball games, throwing and hitting balls. I also enjoy visiting Coquitlam Legion branch 263 on Ridgeway Avenue. to practise the pipes. Legion branch 263 is a great supporter of the piping and pipe band community and I have met many great folks at this legion during the past decade in Coquitlam.

ort Coquitlam is the second biggest city in the Tri-Cities, with a population of more than 60,000 residents.

Since 1994, it’s had a healthy Downtown Business Improvement Association — serving more than 300 members — and, recently, it opened as its new $132-million community centre for residents to skate, swim and play. Governed by Mayor Brad West and council, Port Coquitlam got its roots as Westminster Junction when CP Rail moved its freight terminus from Vancouver to the eastern Tri-City municipality. Later, as the area grew, industry such as metal fabrication and high-tech gained steam. Today, Port Coquitlam — the home of national hero Terry Fox — has three main commercial districts: the downtown, northside and Dominion Triangle, which includes Fremont Village and its anchor tenant Walmart. And, like Coquitlam, its economic development is strong and especially on the filming front; city hall, Shaughnessy Street and the city’s numerous parks and trails are often used as backdrops on TV and movie sets.

What does it mean to you and your business to be an A-List recipient? It means a lot to me that the community values my business and the services we offer. We have been servicing the community with Tri-City Paint and Thoma & Co Designs for nearly 30 years and its’s an honour to have their support. What Tri-City businesses do you frequent? Where to I start? I try to shop local for all of our needs. I particularly love the farmers markets: Sunday mornings in Coquitlam, Thursdays in Port Coquitlam. You get to meet so many interesting vendors and supporting their craft is important. How do you give back to the community? In the past (pre-COVID), we had large annual fundraisers supporting SHARE. We also support the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation and Crossroads Hospice by way of donations to their fundraising galas. We also donate paint, labour and design services in order to help support people in all stages of life, to feel at home. What are your favourite things to do in the Tri-Cities? I must say that our home is my respite. I work six days a week and enjoy coming home to a decorating show or a good book (usually about colour or design) and a glass of wine. That is, when there isn’t some sort of renovation project happening in the house at the time… What is your favourite place to go in the Tri-Cities? I love to be with nature, whether its Rocky Point, Mundy Park or Lafarge Lake. We are so fortunate in where we live, with the wide selection of natural areas to choose from in the Tri-Cities.

I give back to this community by respecting my neighbours, by offering my health and wellness services locally, by teaching yoga at Jai Yoga and creating connections with the students, and by getting vaccinated and following mandates in order to keep those around me safe. ★

What are your favourite things to do in the Tri-Cities? I love the nature and parks we have around here and I absolutely love getting outside for hikes and walks. I often take an entire day to do entire 26km Traboulay PoCo Trail and I love going to Colony Farm Regional Park when I need an easy and peaceful walk. When I want something harder and more vigorous, I love to hike Buntzen Lake and the Diez Vistas trails. For something short, easily accessible but really challenging I like to go do the Coquitlam Crunch. There are so many other trails I love in this area and I encourage everyone to go explore them! Where is your favourite place to go in the Tri-Cities? To be honest, I do not have a favourite. I am a person who really enjoys diversity and that is why I love living here in the Tri-Cities! I love that we have great restaurants, amazing places to hike, fitness studios and gyms, great community centres, the Burrard Inlet and tons of options for shopping! I love that I never really have to leave my neighbourhood to get all my needs met.
