We are looking forward to shaping this publication together with the community. As we put together this issue, we had the privilege of meeting and writing more about Godley’s outstanding people. These pillars of our community each have unique abilities and are dedicated to building a strong network of resources for residents, business owners and for our children. As we welcome new families and new business, many of us have the same goal in mind - that is preserving the spirit of Godley and the culture of small town Texas even as we develop and grow into something that looks much different than the past. We are proud of our town and no matter how different we may be from one household to the next, we all have a common thread in this very special place. Together we make Godley a beautiful community with an established history and a bright future. Built in 2020 the twenty thousand square-foot “Ag Barn” inhabits ten cattle stalls, twenty-four swine enclosures, thirty goat & lamb stalls, and has the ability to house 20-30 turkeys in the poultry room. Retrofitted with a show arena, bathrooms, running hot water, a little kitchen and bluetooth capable speakers, the facility can be used as a venue to host events like the Godley Future Farmers of America Show and local fundraisers. Creating a foundation for our Wildcats to excel in FFA where they will gain necessary life-long skills and knowledge that will help them to be successful as they navigate their way into adulthood. With its imposing steel frame accented in traditional Wildcat colors and showcasing a giant “G-Claw” on front, the facility was built with our growing students’ needs in mind. Providing a place to foster their agriculture projects, the “Ag Barn” is an invaluable resource for students like Cate Heiner and Owen Dickson. Born and raised in Godley, Cate (class of 2023), is a perfect example of the town’s generational deep roots in Agriculture. Both her and her little sister Lila are involved in FFA and AG. Demonstrating her sense of responsibility, Heiner gets to the barn every day at seven in the morning before school to care for her two-hundred and twenty pound Berkshire pig “Gertie” and her FORTY pound tom turkey named “Dragon”. Cate and Dragon dominated the National Championship this year! Turkeys are judged by their size and volume. The judge selects the widest, deepest and longest bird. The exhibitor (Cate) is expected to lift the live turkey to allow the judge to actually measure and evaluate the total amount of product the turkey will yield after processing. Cate raised the perfect champion specimen!! This impressive Junior was on the Floriculture CDE (Career Development Event) Team that won both the area and state FFA competition which qualified them for the National Contest in Indiana where they placed 3rd. Competitions like these help Ag students develop paramount real life skill sets in marketing, public relations, organization and public speaking.
Spending only a short amount of time with Ms. Heiner it is evident that she has immense knowledge of (and a deep passion for) the animals. Introducing us to “Gertie”, Cate explained “Berkshires are classified by the five distinct points of white on their bodies, 4 spots on each foot and one on their nose.” Showcasing her ability to work with the animal, Cate brought Gertie out to the arena and demonstrated how to “drive the pig”. A method that is used to control which direction the pig walks during shows and events by leading them with a narrow elongated stick. Making it look effortless she led Gertie around the arena with a smile stating, “Pigs do talk to you, just not in English” highlighting her ability to communicate silently with the animal. When asked how she learned to do things like “driving a pig” and communicating with the animals effortlessly, Ms. Heiner chuckled her response, “Years of practice and good AG teachers”. Gertie was sold to a family that will process the meat for consumption. The money gained from the sale will be used by Cate to invest in her Senior year AG project. Owen Dickson, on the other hand, is a perfect example of why programs like FFA and facilities like the Ag Barn remain imperative in our rapidly expanding and changing town. Owen is a Sophomore at GHS, his family moved from Keller to Godley 4 years ago. Having zero agriculture experience prior to the move, he jumped right into the AG program and has excelled in it!

Alongside Cate, Mr. Dickson is also involved in LDE and CDE where he qualified for State in Advocacy (LDE) and Wildlife (CDE). Owen and his little brother, who’s in 5th grade, have a goat named Festus that lives at the facility. Festus placed 8th in the “Market Goat” class at the county show and was shown at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo as well. Just like Gertie, Festus will be sold by Owen for processing at the end of his project to secure next year’s project. We asked Owen if when Festus goes to process, does it make you sad? He simply stated “No- you expect it from the beginning. You get a little attached, but you know what’s going to happen”. Which is

exactly why the Ag program is so valuable for students, to help them understand the life cycle of the food we eat. None of this would be possible without the love and dedication of Mr. Lacey Bennett. Starting his teaching career with Godley in 2002, this coming year will be his 21st year at Godley and his 12th year as the Department Head of the Agriculture program. Mr. Bennett’s passion for the kids and animals is nothing short of awe-inspiring. He has one goal, which he stated matter-of-factly, “We’re raising kids first. The animals are just the tool to do that” Bennett continued “I just make sure things are working right, that they (the students) have the tools that they need here to succeed. I make sure that they are feeding them (the animals) the right thing at the right time. It takes time, it’s an experience.” Using his own life experience, Bennett is a veteran of the FFA who was in Ag at Cleburne High School. Involved in leadership contests while raising lambs and beef cattle, he used those projects as way to help finance his tuition at Tarleton State University. He once walked the path that he now helps the students navigate. Guiding the program with one motto “Learning to do, doing to learn”. “They learn it as they go and we kind-of keep them between the lines…It’s a challenge, animals have different needs – so it keeps you ‘hoppin’” chimed Bennett. As the backbone of the Ag program, he is always there to help the kids, from the beginning to the end. Even going as far as helping the students find the right animals at the right price. The animals can come from all over the state and country. From Rio Vista, Iowa, Oklahoma, Austin and even as far as Indiana. Some genetics can go for $1000 dollars or more. Bennett helps guide them to find the best deal for the kids, not the seller. Always keeping his top priority his pupils. Mr. Bennett played a huge role in designing the Ag Facility. Specifically the show arena, which he wanted to mimic actual arenas, like the one at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. He did this with little touches like the shape of the arena and filling it with the same color and texture of soil, so the kids could practice showing at “home” in the same conditions they would be competing in. Bennett said of the facility arena “It’s just the right size, not too big, not too small.” Keeping the Ag Barn functioning like a well-oiled, perfectly tuned machine, Bennett makes sure the students maintain a clear understanding of their responsibilities. The responsibility of providing the basic needs, like food

and water, falls on the students shoulders. “They have to go get it (food), the kids have to feed their own animals. It’s an entrepreneurship, it’s their project. They’re investing money and investing time and putting all that together to make something of themselves and of the animal. When they buy this animal, they have a plan, we ask “What’s the end result? Where do you (the student) want to be at the end of the program? Do you want to just have fun or do you want to be a Champion?” So, they goal set! And then they work hard to hit those goals by the end of the year.” With the Godley show in December, the County show in January and then Houston & Austin shows in March, a lot of commitment is required from the students, families and AG teachers. The students or their family members usually use their own transportation to get their projects to the shows. If they don’t have their own transportation, Godley ISD has provided three trucks and two livestock trailers that allow the AG teachers the ability to ensure the student projects are delivered safely and on time to the shows. With roughly 20% of the projects “placing” at the county shows, they move on to compete in the major shows like Fort Worth Stock Show, San Angelo, and San Antonio.

All in all, it takes a village. These programs wouldn’t be successful without the pillars of strength like Mr. Bennett, parent and teacher volunteers, coupled with community support. This support comes via the Godley FFA Booster club, scholarships like the Zane Gregg Memorial Scholarship, or using your voice as a community member to vote in local elections for the funding of new facilities like our incredible AG barn. All of these things make it possible for our future generations to participate in vital programs like Agriculture and FFA. Cultivating a place for students to gain life-long skills that will open up endless possibilities and foster brighter futures for our young Wildcats, FFA and Ag will remain a very important part of our town for years to come.

With the new season comes a renewed spirit in design trends as the world starts to wake up from life as we knew it during the pandemic. Our society has been limited to staying indoors and working from home. This change in our daily experience caused many to realize the need for better form and function. Our surroundings have the power to calm, to inspire, and improve our wellbeing. Take exra care to ensure you are getting what you need from your living space. As busy and modern families, we tend to clutter up useful space, forcing it to play against us. Creating a room that is conducive and aesthetically pleasing can sometimes prove to be a challenge when really, it’s a few simple steps towards gratification! Begin by first organizing and de-cluttering your home. This includes closets and cabinets and even the garage. Doing this will provide a clean slate to begin to re-create a space that will reflect a positive energy from the start and allow you to recognize your desired design outcome in each element. Collect ideas and photographs of furnishings, accessories, colors and other details that can help communicate a style to follow. Meeting with a designer usually begins with an in home consultation to establish expectations. Each client and project presents a new challenge. NEUTRAL COLOR TRENDS WILL BEGIN TO SHIFT Spaces will to reflect warmer and bolder colors as we move away from the all whites and grays that forced us to be surrounded by sterile rooms in recent years. I believe we will see the move from the “safe zone” of neutrals and people will begin using more vibrant colors and bold patterned fabrics.
Material driven applications, tangible textures, softer shapes and angles will take the place of matte walls, flat accents, and straight lined furniture essentially creating updated spaces that are welcoming, warm and easy to relax in. Dual purpose rooms have now received recognition as the kitchen table becomes the conference room and home office space is displayed virtually across the web within the workplace. Travel and nature inspired interiors will be emerging as a trend in 2022 as well. In-home hospitality and entertaining will continue to see a major shift to the outdoors. ana was born in Memphis, Tennessee and moved to Texas in 1981. She grew up in Cleburne then attended the University of North Texas in Denton, majoring in Merchandising and Hospitality Management. Jana spent the majority of her years within the restaurant industry beginning at the age of 13. After marriage and starting a family, the long hours of the restaurant business paved a way into real estate, where the opportunity continued to meet, be a part of people’s lives, and have a direct impact in helping families reach their goals of buying or selling their homes. Jana has sold real estate for 16 years and continues to do so today. She’s found herself encouraged by friends and family to explore her passion creating within different areas of design in the downtime hours. This led to developing her recent venture, Texas Tailored Designs. With several avenues of creative services offered, her hope is to also include local businesses and talents in the projects ahead of her. Jana and her family moved to Godley in 2008. Her late husband owned a mechanic business in town for several years and she has two daughters raised in GISD. Jayden is a sophomore at Texas State University in San Marcos and Jesley attends 8th grade at Godley Middle School. his is the vision that local and real estate investor, Trennon Massengale, has for the new Hunter Park complex. A lifelong member of the Godley community, Trennon is a walking billboard for preserving Godley tradition as the town rapidly grows into the future. Headed east to Cleburne from Godley on HWY 171, sprawling over 46 acres, sitting 3/4s of a mile outside of downtown Godley with 65,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, Hunter Park promises to bring several exciting things to Godley. A meeting place for culture, food, music, new businesses, space for current Godley businesses to grow, and even a dog park for “Fido” to roam and make friends. Born and raised in Godley, 2 blocks from the Baptist church, local business owner Trennon Massengale has been in Godley for 50 years. President of the Local FFA in high school, the 1991 Godley High School Wildcat Alumni has deep seated lifelong roots in our beloved town. The future of Godley is something that he believes strongly in. Trennon attended Tarleton State University where he met his wife of 29 years, Amy. Together they raised their 2 children Hunter (26) and Sloan (22) in Godley and now have a granddaughter growing up here . The Massengales continue to keep their Wildcat roots strong by being active
members of the community and helping to raise the future generations here in our small town and helping us facilitate the growth that is knocking at our door. Starting as a real estate investor in Johnson county, Massengale (an avid outdoorsman), grew his company SWP from a small real estate investment firm to building custom homes and local businesses. By branching out from investment to open the building and cement workside of SWP, he is responsible for some of our local staple buildings here in Godley. Examples include Pumpkin Patch, 108 Nail Bar, ACS Bank and now, Hunter Park. At every turn, Trennon seems to be at the forefront of the growth in and around our beloved Godley! Using his hobbies to pull inspirations from small towns scattered all across Texas, Trennon states “I love traveling and seeing small towns in Texas, which is where the inspiration for Hunter Park came from – cities like Graham, Wimberley and Fredericksburg. As a city, we can have a place to host events and gather as a community and this will create a spot that’s privately owned, but a public space - (essentially) a downtown area on the outskirts of town.”

Planning to break ground in Spring of 2022, Trennon has hired the same architects who designed The Shops at Clearfork in Fort Worth. With four phases in total, phase one consists of building the business office (16,000 sf) and two stories. These will hold SWP’s headquarters, Godley Properties, offices for several local builders, an automated car wash, a 50,000 square foot grocery store and six retail/restaurant buildings. Phase 1 will encompass about 60% of the entire complex. Phase 1 also includes the one acre dog park that ties into the 15 acre greenspace backing up to an amphitheater. There is a section of Hunter Park with a trail system of walking and biking trails inside the park that follows a creek to the Nolan River in a loop, coined “The Trail Head”. The “Trail Head” has a designated area for public restrooms, pavilions and also an area for local businesses to host a variety of events like farmers markets, fitness classes, produce days, craft fairs and more. Trennon hopes the Amphitheater can be used for live events, school performances, Super Bowl parties, even a place to watch the World Series or for anything for which the community requires a public performance space. The amphitheater will house an enormous tele-
vision that would make watching games an immersive experience. It will be lined with pavilions and walk-up restaurants. The plan is to have a place where people can enjoy a cold drink or cocktail under the shade of the covered pavilion and enjoy the scheduled entertainment for that day! Trennon hummed, “(This is) not just a shopping center, (it’s) a destination”. When asked “What’s drawing people to Godley?” Trennon responded with – “people are coming from a lot of different places, a lot from DFW as they‘re able to commute easier via Chisholm trail Parkway. Also, they are coming for our Godley school system which has excelled for so many years.” He adds, “I’m a huge fan of Dr. Dear and the way he’s handled the growth.” We asked Trennon about the growth and change of Godley and his response again is right in line with his deep roots and preservation mentality, “while a lot has changed, I don’t think of it as change. I still go to the same café I went to as a kid (Chisholm’s), I still see the same people at lunch, and at church. Godley is still a family. (But,) every day I meet people that I don’t know which gives me the opportunity to make great friends, we’re just growing our family”.

Athletics is such a big deal in Godley, basketball, football and now soccer,” states Joy, “I knew people were going to Granbury and Burleson to get it done, and I thought what a better way than to bring it here?” She saw a need for this cutting edge technology and brought it to our community. Gaining popularity in the professional sports industry decades ago, cryotherapy dates back to ancient civilizations. Though it has grown immensely in popularity the last ten years and only recently been made accessible to the general public. Cryotherapy is the practice of using cold temperatures to support healing and wellness. In treating and caring for our locals at Godley Family Medicine, Joy sees a number of sports related injuries all the time. But she also encounters everyday ailments such as arthritis, inflammation, hip pain, lower neck injuries, chronic illnesses and many more. “Cryotherapy reduces inflammation” states Joy. Standing around seven feet tall and weighing about 750

Palio’s Pizza Cafe Godley Pizza for a Cause On Jan 5, 2022, local restaurant Palio’s Pizza put together a fundraising event for fellow local business owner, Michael McLeod of Glazed & Confused. Following a biking accident, portions of the night’s profits were donated directly to the McLeod family to help with their medical expenses. The evening was a huge success and even a donation jar set out maxed out at over 4 digits $$$$. A big thank you to the community that made this possible!

Most recently, Connor Anderton set up “Pizza Friday.” “Pizza Friday” is a world-wide effort, generally implemented by someone locally. Connor did just that. Each week, his customers have the opportunity to submit names of friends, neighbors, or people in the community in need. Every week, 1-2 families are picked to receive dinner. Circumstances vary, but Connor’s real goal is to make the community aware, “and these opportunities presented themselves so we organized them and gave others the chance to help. It has been incredibly touching, and often emotional for my wife and I to see people rally for families they usually don’t know personally.” In his free time, Connor coaches his son’s baseball team, is an avid reader, loves to fire up the smoker on the weekends and he believes H-E-B is the best grocery store in Texas. Connor Anderton owns and operates a local pest control company. He’s been in business since 2019. He describes himself, “I hope I never fully grow up, haha! I’m like a Peter Pan that kills spiders…” Connor grew up in a large family on a 40 acre working ranch. “Countless Saturday mornings or weekday evenings were spent fixing neighbors fences, splitting and delivering ‘widow’s wood,’ mowing lawns for those unable, or helping people move. This instilled an understanding and appreciation for the purpose of serving those around you. It also taught me that few will show up when the ‘chips are down,’ so it’s important to rise to the occasion yourself.”
