letterfromtheeditor In this first letter to the community, I’d like to talk about patterns. Design seems like a relevant discussion and one to be aware of as our town rapidly grows. Paying attention to the patterns around us, both the ones we create and those that occur naturally could be the difference between a well grounded community and one that feels transitional, even detached.

From the moment you open your eyes, patterns are everywhere; a floral bedspread, the stripes of the window blinds, the placement of your bathroom tiles, and in the clothes you choose to wear that day. These are the easy, more recognizable patterns we experience. But, patterns are also in nature, in the formation of a flock of geese, the way wild sunflowers turn toward the sun, and even in the way weather fronts move in each season. Man creates patterns outside, too. Consider the neighborhoods going up, their street patterns, their lighting systems, even plumbing. Consider the fence lines and road lines that determine our route each day, creating yet another pattern of cars, trucks and even livestock moving to the next pasture.

It’s these distinctions that make us who we are, that mark where we’re from. No matter how different we are, this is what we have in common. As we grow and inevitably develop into something very unlike what this area has historically been, let’s take inventory of the patterns around us that complete who we are. We should always remember where we started, how we got here and hold onto it.

Inside this first issue, find what makes our town special, including small business, education, and history. It’s these characteristics and the decision to preserve them that makes us stronger and keeps a tight knit community, no matter how much we change.

Community Perk Jeff and Robin encourage and promote fellow farmers and entrepreneurs. They hope their farm continues to be a place where people like to gather.

t B. Blumen Flower Farm, visitors will find an experience that makes the destination worth the drive.

These days, families are ready to get out and about, especially in nature.

When owners and farmers, Jeff and Robin, started this venture, they didn’t expect their homestead and farm to turn into such a happy place for people to gather, but they welcome it.

On Fridays, be on the lookout for their drivethru bouquet pick up events. They’ve seen a lot of success with this fun and easy idea. The first one was a success, and it seems to double in visitors each weekend. A great opportunity for the couple to make the most of their perishable product, this event has turned out crowds from Godley and counties beyond.

Robin and Jeff are first generation farmers and entrepreneurs at heart. After a couple various ventures, they were quick to pounce on the idea of a flower farm. Robin is a passionate and patient gardener, and neither one of them is afraid of a little sweat equity.

For example, Jeff built their home with absolutely no carpentry background. He taught himself with YouTube videos how to put together a little farm house for him and his bride, he even added a tiny home in the back for his mom.

As for a business plan, they knew that flowers were the highest margin cash crop and there was a gap in the industry here. There are no farms like it in the area, but there’s a good reason for that, flowers aren’t supposed to be able to grow well in Texas. They started with a test garden.

They’ve educated themselves on the best ways to make the most of their little ⅛ acre of grow space.

First, they run what’s called a “no till farm.” Robin explains, “We use a broad fork that helps preserve the microbiome of the soil, rather than throwing a tiller in here and chopping up all the earthworms, also flipping the soil, which exposes the underside to sunlight and kills all the healthy bacteria.”

This area of Texas is known for not having great soil. “There’s nearly no phosphorus or organic matter, it is clay based for the most part,” Jeff says. “I

built the house on the highest, flattest, largest spot, but basically we are standing on a giant band of limestone.” This was the hardest part of getting their garden started. Just to get six inches of soil, Jeff had to break apart all the limestone with hand tools.

With the land, the two knew they were starting this project in a deficit. The best approach was to use an environmentally friendly method, that means no pesticides, chemicals, or fertilizers. Organic farming preserves any nutrients in the soil really well, and builds the foundation for a farm that should be sustainable for many years to come. Jeff explains, “While also in line with our personal beliefs, we have to consider that we don’t have the flexibility to move around, we have to make the very most of it.”

In only a year’s time, their organic practices have already paid off, their garden has quadrupled in size and, “When it rains, there’s earthworms everywhere,

and our garden is full of butterflies, ladybugs, hummingbirds,” Robin says. She further explains, “I grow everything from seed, other than bulbs or tubers, everything I grow is my little baby seed..”

She is so passionate about her plants, when our community endured the hard freeze last winter, she wanted to go lay in the flower beds.

A favorite organic farming story of theirs is when their Celosia was covered in aphids, a common pest that quickly destroys crops. Typically managed by spraying with pesticides, Robin took a different approach. Within days, she found ladybug larvae, and days later, the ladybugs had grown and eaten away all the aphids leaving a fresh and healthy plant. Jeff adds, “Flowers want to grow, sometimes it’s our job to get out of nature’s way.”

Robin loves growing atypical, even vintage flowers one wouldn’t find in the grocery store. Her very

favorite are gladiolas. She loves flowers that trigger good memories for her customers. Jeff loves the zinnias, a bright and dramatic starter plant for anyone interested in farming flowers.

organic flowers. This fall, Robin plans on harvesting and selling the seeds from her crop. The couple will continue their Friday drive thru bouquet event at the farm and participate in local farmers markets in Acton, Benbrook, and Granbury.

She still works at a Guerin Nursery in Granbury as the day manager three days a week. The owners have been mentors to Jeff and Robin. “Glen Guerin helped me put together the whole irrigation system,” says Jeff. “I’ve learned so much from him and now I understand how to put together a commercial system.”

They encourage and promote fellow farmers and entrepreneurs and hope their farm continues to be a place where people like to gather.

It is a challenge running a business and a farm with only two people. The couple isn’t afraid of the physical work, but finding a balance between it all, and their quick success, is proving to be a difficult task.

They are taking it slow and learning to balance demand and growth, even though they’ve already experienced interest from wedding planners, event venues, hotels, and even chefs for their beautiful and

BLACKENED SALMON WITH CAJUN BUTTER & COWBOY POTATO HASH 4 Salmon filets (5-7 oz each)

2 T garlic, minced

4 T blackening seasoning (recipe follows)

1/2 C + 3 T butter

4 medium Idaho russet potato, medium diced

1 T fresh or dried parsley and fresh dill sprig

1 tsp paprika

3 Tbls olive oil

1 tsp garlic powder

2 lemon wedges

1/3 C yellow onion, small dice

Salt and pepper to taste

1/3 C red bell pepper, small dice

FU N FACT: Randy Ishie has accepted a Chef position inside the VIP Lounge at Dallas Cowboy’s AT&T Stadium. Ishie has cooked for the band Poison, B.B. King, Wesley Snipes, and Ethan Hawk. He’s also catered many NFL banquets.

1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

2. Toss all spices together and set aside.

3. Pat dry the Salmon filets with paper towel, melt 1 Tbls (or as much as needed) butter and brush Salmon, rub blackening season on flesh side generously.

4. Toss potatoes with a splash of olive oil, salt and pepper, garlic powder, paprika.

5. Heat a sauté pan (skillet) until very hot but not to smoke point, add the potatoes and let sear for 1-2 minutes, gently scrape bottom of pan with firm metal spatula to loosen potatoes and sauté. Add peppers, onions, and garlic, sauté for 2-3 mins. Add parsley and 2T butter.

Toss and set aside and hold warm.

6. Heat a large cast iron skillet or similar heavybottomed pan over medium heat (no need to add oil). Once the pan is very hot (a droplet of water should dance on its surface), working quickly but gently, add the salmon fillets, one at a time, flesh-side down. Cook for 2 to 3 minutes without disturbing the fillets, until the surface is blackened (peek as little as possible!, then carefully turn each piece of salmon over to finish cooking. Continue to cook over medium heat, until the skin becomes crispy, and the fish is fully cooked through, about 5 to 6 additional minutes depending upon the thickness of your fillets. The fish should reach 145 degrees F on an instant read thermometer and flake easily with a fork at its thickest part.

7. In a different saute pan or microwave safe bowl melt remaining butter and squeeze one of the lemon wedges into butter, add a tsp of blackening season to butter.

8. Plate with Cowboy hash on bottom laying Salmon on top and spooning cajun butter over fish. Garnish with lemon wedge and dill sprig.

SOUTHWEST CHIPOTLE LIME DRESSING pictured above 1. For the salad, toss your favorite seasonal vegetables and greens together with diced grilled chicken.

1 tsp canned chipotle in adobo, puréed 1 ½ C mayonnaise 1 C sour cream 2 T Hidden Valley Ranch dressing spice mix 2 T lime juice 3 T whole milk 1 tsp salt ½ tsp black pepper 2. Whisk together all ingredients in a medium size mixing bowl and set aside.

3. Dress salad as desired and toss. Garnish with lime wedge. For crunch, fried tortilla strips.

CHIMICHURRI SAUCE 2/3 cup olive oil 2 T red wine vinegar 1/4 C finely chopped parsley 1/2 C finely chopped cilantro (optional) 3-4 cloves garlic , finely chopped or minced 1 T red chili pepper (or crushed red pepper flakes) ¾ tsp dried oregano 1 tsp Kosher salt pepper, to taste (about 1/2 teaspoon)

CHARRED FLAT IRON STEAK WITH SOUTHWEST WHITE BEAN SALAD For the White Bean Salad 2 cans white kidney beans (aka. cannellini beans), rinsed and drained 1/2 medium red onion, small dice 1 jalapeno (seeds removed), sml dice 3 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 pint grape tomatoes halved, roasted (optional) 1 T lime juice 3 T cilantro, chopped

Toss all ingredients together in bowl and set aside.

For the Steak

¼ C garlic, minced 2 single ribs celery, chopped

4 flat iron steaks (about 6-8oz each)

2 russet/Idaho potato, peeled and chopped

1 T Chili powder

2 T chicken base

1 ½ tsp cumin

1 1/2 qt chicken stock

1 T lime

2 C heavy cream

1 tsp Black pepper

3 corn tortillas, cut in strips and fried

2 T olive oil

1/2 C Mexican crema

1 tsp coriander, ground Salt to taste

1. Mix all ingredients together except steak and salt.

2. Cover steaks in marinade then salt both sides, let sit for at least 1 hour (3-4 hours ideally).

3. Heat grill to 450- 500 degrees and put steaks on hottest part of grill for 3-4 mins each side.

When he was a teenager, Acy McGehee started working as a volunteer firefighter. Many of the adult men in the community spent days working at General Dynamic, the Sante Fe Railroad, or owned and operated local dairy farms. So, when an emergency fire was reported, Acy’s dad, then the Godley Superintendent, would come get Acy and a few others out of class to report to the fire. Back then, there was only one fire truck. Today, we have one of the busiest fire departments in Johnson County.

Following high school, Acy “dairied” at his father-in-law’s dairy farm after a year at Tarleton State University. He also completed a freight car apprenticeship with the Santa Fe Railroad. Once he completed that, General Dynamic hired him under contract for a couple years as a machinist. He quickly walked in the very same footsteps as many of the local men that grew up here.

He also graduated from the Fort Worth Police Academy at age 27 and for four years worked as a Fort Worth police officer. As a rookie, he spent nights patrolling deep east Fort Worth, areas like Stop Six, and quickly learned that career choice was not the best and safest option for his family.

His experience took him to Aztec manufacturing in Crowley in the early 80s where they made drill pipe during the oil boom. At the same time, Godley was preparing for the Centennial. Established in 1886, Godley was preparing for a 100 year celebration complete with parades, bands, and even the Governor’s wife attended and presented a Centennial certificate.

A good friend of Acy’s who was Mayor of Godley at the time, spoke with Acy about acting as Marshall during the weekend’s celebrations, just to ensure the safety of the community. Acy agreed to it and explained, “To start out I was just the City Marshall for the Centennial and… after that, occasionally we would go out to the Sheriff ’s Department if a call was in the city.” His patrol partner was Tommy Wallis,

father of the current City Administrator, David Wallis. Tommy was a Cleburne Firefighter, an arson investigator and licensed peace officer. Acy said, “He and I were friends, he would usually be my patrol partner. We would go out on weekends and just make an appearance. This was volunteer work around my daytime job at Comanche Peak.”

Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant was constructed and ready for operation. Acy started with a five year contract as an operator. As they went commercial, he and some of the other employees were rolled over to work for TXU Energy. Even though nearly 80% of the operators were seasoned and well trained, many of which were ex navy nuclear operators, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission wanted everyone in these positions to attain a bachelors, if they hadn’t already.

At 50 years old, Acy received a Bachelors in Nuclear Engineering from the University of North Texas.

Acy worked as an operator at Comanche Peak until he retired. He was also a licensed paramedic and in the fire brigade. And all the while, for more than twenty

years he continued police work in his community of Godley.

He and Tommy continued to patrol on weekends and eventually, he told the City Council that he felt it was time to establish a full time police officer and department. They agreed and made Acy Police Chief. He set up the department, wrote most of the procedures, hired a few reserve officers and trained with them each year.

In time, the department was up to four or five officers and Acy was still working as an operator at Comanche Peak. He decided it was best to step down as Police Chief, as he didn’t feel like he had the time any longer, necessary for the job. He assisted with hiring a new Police Chief, and still made himself available to help out.

Only just recently, in the last few years, while Acy was completing his term on City Council, he and David Wallis, then Mayor, decided it was time to create a position for City Administrator. Wallis had and

continues to have good relationships with TxDOT, and as we grow, this has become a greater priority for us. Wallis stepped down from Mayor to allow more time to administrative duties and in January 2021, Acy was elected Mayor of Godley (Councilwoman Jan Whitehead served temporarily as pro tem Mayor last year).

Acy’s typical day consists of checking in at City Hall where they sometimes have paperwork ready for him, usually plat plans and ordinances the city engineer and the city attorney prepare. He attends local Chamber meetings and Lion’s Club meetings. As well, he has a good working relationship with the current superintendent, Rich Dear.

Acy and his wife, Annette, share a son, James Acy McGehee the IVth and three grandchildren, James Acy the Vth, Hanna, and Nolan McGehee. Three generations of their family have graduated from Godley schools.

Acy plays in a pool league on Thursday nights with

his son and grandson. He explains, “When I was a kid, I’d spend time in Meridian with my cousins and there was a pool hall downtown. On Saturday mornings, the guy would let us play pool as payment for cleaning the tables.”’

Acy loves to golf, he’s a member of Mensa, and a founding member of the Greater Cleburne Carnegie Theatre. He also loves Mexican food and to eat at Del Norte when he gets the chance. Acy and his wife, Annette, who is a retired office manager for Family Medicine in Joshua take it easy and stay close to home. They love this community and are committed to nurturing the inevitable growth. They continue to volunteer their time when they are needed and are a shining example of what it means to give back.

History The town was established in 1886.

The namesake was R. B. Godley, a Cleburne businessman who donated the right-of-way to the railroad (The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe).

Godley also donated 20 acres for the townsite.

A station was built that same year (1886) and a post office opened in 1888. (texasescapes.com)

WHAT DOES IS IT ALL MEAN? A VATRE is a special election called by a school district, asking voters to approve an increase above the maximum Maintenance and Operations (M&O) tax rate. The M&O tax rate in Godley ISD is .9664 (97 cents).

Voter approval through a VATRE is required for a school district to exceed this rate.

ALL of the revenue raised through this increase would go directly to the increase of salaries and pay for our teachers and staff. If the VATRE is approved by voters in the November election, Godley ISD intends to immediately increase employee salaries starting with their November paycheck.

WHY IS GODLEY CALLING A VOTER APPROVED TAX RATIFICATION ELECTION? (VATRE) • We want a life-changing teacher in every classroom for our students.

• The Godley ISD Strategic Design team recommended increasing ISD revenue by using a VATRE to create a competitive and innovative salary structure to help attract and retain lifechanging teachers.

• Godley ISD will use the increased revenue to increase teacher and staff salaries to better compete with surrounding DFW schools.

WHY DOES GODLEY ISD WANT TO INCREASE TEACHER AND STAFF SALARIES? • One of Godley ISD’s core pillars is to put a Life Changing Teacher in every classroom. We strive to achieve staffing excellence at every position.

• Because Godley ISD is a relatively small school district in the DFW area, we don’t have the economy of scale (budget) to compete well with the surrounding, larger ISD’s.

• For this reason the average Godley ISD teacher salary lags behind the majority of DFW school districts. We know our rockstar teachers didn’t enter their profession for the money, but we want to do everything we can to attract and retain the highest of quality teachers for our learners.

HOW WILL THE VATRE IMPACT A HOMEOWNER’S SCHOOL TAXES? • It would increase $3.66 per month for the average Godley ISD homeowner.

• The average taxable home value in Godley ISD is $171,724. The impact of the 2.5 cent increase (per $100 valuation) would be $43.96 per year, $3.66 per month, or .12 cents a day.

• As mentioned earlier, HB3 tax compression will reduce the M&O tax rate increase from the recommended 12 cents down to 2.5 cents. Meaning, GISD would receive 12 cents in tax increase yield for only a 2.5 cent tax increase.

• Godley ISD’s M&O tax rate has decreased 7 cents since 2019.

WHAT IS THE PROPOSED M&O TAX RATE INCREASE FROM OUR CURRENT M&O TAX RATE? • 2.5 cents.

• The current Godley ISD M&O tax rate is $0.9664. The recommendation is to increase the M&O tax rate by 12 cents to $1.0864. However, due to House Bill 3 tax compression, the resulting M&O tax rate would only be $0.992, for a total M&O tax rate increase of $.0256.

• Passing a VATRE now means the State of Texas pays the other 9.5 cents of our 12 cent M&O tax rate increase. (See Bar Chart on opposite page) • For Godley ISD, HB 3 tax rate compression makes 2021 an ideal time to pass a VATRE because the State will pay the majority of the M&O tax rate increase. *BY LAW, I&S FUNDS CANNOT BE USED TO PAY M&O EXPENSES, WHICH MEANS APPROVED BOND FUNDS CANNOT BE USED TO PAY SALARIES OR OPERATING EXPENSES.
