Two campuses Two ideal locations

Peterborough is a place where spectacular natural and outdoor recreation abound, while Oshawa boasts a distinctive urban community vibe.

Peterborough: Symons Campus

Oshawa: Thornton Road Campus

Along the banks of the Otonabee River, Trent’s Symons Campus enjoys awardwinning architecture on a stunning natural landscape. The City and County of Peterborough are integral parts of the University community and provide a thriving environment in which to live and grow, along with many opportunities to connect learning with projects and businesses in the community.

Building on a proud 40year history of granting degrees in the Durham region, Trent Oshawa’s faculty and students are actively engaged in lively debate and inspiring exploration. Situated within the GTA, close to the GO Train, Highway 401 and steps from Durham’s rapid transit bus corridor, the campus borders the welcoming cities of Oshawa and Whitby with the conveniences of city life. Along with proximity to a vibrant greenbelt, parks, and beaches, Oshawa and the Durham Region provide ideal opportunities for student engagement.

Peterborough has the energy, diversity and resources of a thriving university town, offering boutiques, art galleries, museums, pubs, cafés and a vibrant music and performance scene. With the Rotary Trail and Trent Severn Waterway running through campus, natural scenery and recreation abound - all just 90 minutes from Toronto.

Learning in the Community Winner of a Community-Based Research Award, Lauren Ostrowski benefitted from experiential learning through the Trent Centre for CommunityBased Education. She collaborated directly with the Peterborough Lakefield Community Police Service on her Forensic Science project that involved critical analysis of the relationship between police and victim support systems.

Shining Examples

GLOBAL INNOVATOR AND TRENT UNIVERSITY CHANCELLOR

Don Tapscott, Honours B.Sc. in Psychology and Sociology, (1966) “At Trent, I learned how to think, how to write, how to solve problems,” says Don Tapscott, Trent’s first alumnus to become chancellor, a digital age guru, best-selling author of 14 books and one of the top ten global business thinkers. Don says that students should focus on a broad education. “It’s no longer just what you know; it’s your capacity to solve problems, to think, to research, and to reinvent your knowledge base. Trent’s student-focused, customized, collaborative learning experience is the new model for developing knowledge workers who can build more effective social and economic institutions.”

Lucie Edwards, Honours B.A. Economics and History (1973)

Author of the award-winning novel Life of Pi, which became an Oscar-winning motion picture, Yann Martel began writing while studying philosophy at Trent. “I loved playing with language, creating a set, inventing characters,” he says. “I kept at it and, slowly, I became a writer.” He sees Trent as a place to develop broad-minded, critical thinkers. “The world needs, above all else, thinking citizens who are informed in a way that they can deal with the world’s complexity. A good university, like Trent, can develop that.”

Alumni House: Trent alumni are ongoing supporters of current students in many ways from career development and networking events to funding bursaries, scholarships and awards. trentu.ca/alumni

Eric, Sean and Kate Gillespie say that Trent was essential to their development as business professionals. The siblings, who graduated from Trent’s Business Administration program, have seen their multi-million dollar family enterprise Flying Colours triple in size in just four years. With clients ranging from movie stars to multi-national corporations, Flying Colours is a world leader in aircraft refurbishing, modification and completion. “Although we have specific responsibilities, we all wear different hats. Trent taught us how to adapt to different situations and prepared us for taking on various roles in our company.”

Check out videos, photo galleries and full profiles.

It’s no wonder Dr. Suresh Narine was named one of Canada’s Top 40 under 40 in 2011. Internationally recognized as a pioneer researcher, Dr. Narine returned to Trent in 2009 as professor of Physics, Astronomy and Chemistry and he established the Trent Centre for Biomaterials Research (TCBR), a 7,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art research and technology development facility that focuses on the creation of petro-chemical replacements and biomaterials from lipids. “As a Trent student,” Dr. Narine says, “I learned to think for myself, to challenge the status quo, and I learned that solutions often reside in unconventional partnerships. Without this approach, many of the successes I have counted in my life would not have been possible.”

Lucie Edwards describes the day she formally invited Nelson Mandela to become an honorary Canadian as the high point of her 33-year career in the Canadian Foreign Service, which took her to a series of hot spots in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Speaking of her time as a Trent student, she says: “You can’t get lost at Trent. The small group teaching, the emphasis on tutorials, the individual support – you’re fully engaged in what’s going on at the school. And the college system provides a wonderful community on a scale that is suitable for young people. My closest friends were made at Trent, and I see that close community spirit is still alive and well.”

THRILL MASTER ALUMNUS-IN-RESIDENCE (2013-14)

Linwood Barclay, Honours B.A. English Literature (1977) Linwood Barclay found the support he needed at Trent to pursue his passion for writing. Now an international bestselling author, he has fans like Stephen King waiting for his latest novel. His recent novel Trust Your Eyes is set to become a film and it all started as an English major at Trent University. “At Trent, you can get to know your professors, drop into their offices, and have one-on-one conversations,” says Linwood. “You’re not just a face in the crowd.” And he points out that Trent’s broad approach to learning is relevant at a time when specific skills can become obsolete in a few years. “If you learn how to think critically, to understand other points of view, to assess a situation with a sense of history, you’ll be able to draw on that experience for much, much longer,” he says.
