t’s every student’s dream to go straight from the university podium, degree in hand, to a meaningful (degree-related!) job.

That’s why David Paterson chose to take on the torch of leadership of the Trent University Business Council (TBC), from former chair Mr. Bill Lockington. For Business Administration student Rachel Burnett, their community support is helping her dream to become a reality.

Helping to foster a connection between Trent and the business community, the TBC is composed of community business and not-for-profit leaders committed to supporting student success and advancing the reputation of Trent’s business administration program. An early advocate for, and financial supporter of, the field-based study program, the TBC recently welcomed former Johnson and Johnson executive

David Paterson as its new cochair, serving alongside Asaf Zohar, chair of Trent’s Business Administration program.

“I view this opportunity as both an honour and a privilege,” said Mr. Paterson. “The reality of the work world is significantly different from the academic world these students live in on a day-to-day basis. We need to help them bridge this gap.”

For Ms. Rachel Burnett, the dream of walking across the podium to a relevant job became a reality last spring as she was hired by the Holiday Inn as a social media consultant after having completed an internship there through the field-based study program.

This program gave me an opportunity to do something I had never done before and in a field I was inexperienced in,” said Ms. Burnett. “Having the opportunity to be in the work world without fear of failure is

something that was extremely valuable to me and taught me that it is okay to take chances instead of being so cautious with everything I do. I believe it gives me a competitive advantage in terms of entering the work world.”

GEMMA EDWINS Gemma Edwins, an international student from St. Lucia, gives freely of her time here at Trent. She participated in the creation of a student human rights group – an act that led to an invitation to the Presidential Advisory Committee on Human Rights – and helped lobby for an on-campus spiritual space. She has also worked with administration in the Liaison Office and the New Student Advisory (NSA) program, advising parents and assisting students with their entry into an enriched student experience at Trent.

Ms. Edwin has also worked in communications with the on-campus organization Kawartha World Issues Centre (KWIC), helped organize Trent’s Afrobana, and worked with local secondary school students on a Model United Nations Program.

“I’m proud to have been given an opportunity to help share the Trent view on business and international development with new audiences from across our community and around the world,” she reported. “And I am thankful for the gift that has allowed me such freedom.”

he Trent University Alumni Association (TUAA) is pleased to announce that alumni An Kosurko ’92, Laura Suchan ’84, and Kylie Patrick ’94 are new presidents of the TUAA Peterborough, Oshawa and Ottawa chapters respectively.

Ms. Kosurko was Peterborough’s acting president from 2010-2011 and has enjoyed getting to know the alumni community. Favourite hosted events so far include the 25km Dinner at the Sustainability Building, the Chocolatada at Alumni House and The Freak Show at 4th Line Theatre.

Ms. Kosurko arrived at Trent in 1992 and graduated with an Honours B.A. in Cultural Studies. She currently works as a communications officer in the Department of Marketing & Communications at Trent and also volunteers with the Legacy Society.

Ms. Suchan has been getting to know students, faculty, staff and alumnia in Oshawa, as she was instrumental in the successful creation of an archaeological field-course that took place at the Oshawa Museum, where she is the executive director. The course offers hands-on experience to students on a two-week archaeological dig at Historic Henry House on the Oshawa waterfront.

Ms. Suchan studied anthropology at Trent in the 80s, and was happy to provide an opportunity to current students that she herself would have benefitted from when she was a student. “This is a course I would have taken,” she said. “Having to work during the summers when I was in school, I couldn’t do the major summer excursions to Belize.”

Speaking of her Trent Experience, she said, “I loved it. I enjoyed every minute of it. I think I was born to be a student.” Ms. Suchan was at Trent from 1984 to 1988, when she graduated with an Honours Bachelor of Science in Anthropology.

Kylie Patrick ’94 has officially stepped into her new role as Ottawa chapter president. Ms. Patrick graduated from Trent in ’99 with an Honours B.A. in Canadian Studies and Political Studies.

“I’m honoured to take on this leadership role with alumni in Trent University’s national capital chapter. I look forward to meeting with our many members at upcoming events this fall,” said Ms. Patrick.

Originally from Guelph, Ontario, Ms. Hartmans is pursuing a double-major degree in Environmental Studies and International Development.

“As a result of the financial support from this scholarship, I chose to focus on joining a variety of campus groups that focus on community outreach and youth engagement such as the Trent Global Living Community; the KWIC/OXFAM “Food, Gender, Climate-Making Connections” Working Group; and the Free The Children MOBilizer youth activism group. In addition, I am participating in the Impact program, and I am a student notetaker for the notetaker program.

“I am a volunteer-a-holic,” she admitted.

“During high school, I tried to be involved with as many groups as possible. I tried to always give back. Getting a scholarship has allowed me the opportunity to continue this at the university level.

It’s helping me gain the opportunities to become a better leader in my community.”

s. Erin Hartmans, recipient of the prestigious Board of Governors Scholarship, visited in person the open session of the Board of Governors meeting in October 2011, to offer her thanks to the Board for their support.

“It was an honour to have the opportunity to address the Board of Governors who so generously sponsored the scholarship,” said Ms. Hartmans.

“I am immensely grateful to the Board for their support of my academic career.”

Funded through donations from current, former and honorary board members, the Board of Governor’s Leadership Scholarship is awarded to an entering student who has shown outstanding leadership and involvement in his/her community as well as high academic achievement. Ms. Hartmans was selected from 122 prestigious scholarship applicants.

The Board of Governors Scholarship has an overall value of $18,000 consisting of full tuition for the first year of study and $4,500 in each of the succeeding three years of study, providing that an academic average of 80% is maintained in 5.0 Trent University credits in each academic year.

MARY ANNE MARTIN It is an honour to be offered an award which recognizes the outstanding contribution of one of Trent’s renowned teachers.

The John Henry Wadland Canadian Studies Graduate Scholarship will help support my research in the area of food security.

Although my experiences at Trent will certainly shape my focus, currently I plan to study the extent to which people living in poverty are able to access community-based local food initiatives.

I know that Trent’s community focus and commitment to social justice make it an ideal setting for my studies. he Department of English Literature at Trent University is honouring Dr. Leonard Conolly’s retirement with the creation of the Leonard Conolly Graduate Students Travel Fund,

visit archival collections, so the creation of the fund to cover the costs of travel was his suggestion.

This new fund falls under the 2014 Initiative of the Department of English Literature, which recognizes the retirements of long-serving faculty who are retiring by 2014. The 2014 Initiative enables the department to finance residencies by writers and scholars, and enrich scholarships, awards, bursaries as well as prizes for undergraduate and graduate students.

OTSS WRAP UP This year, the Ontario government replaced the Ontario Trust for Student Support (OTSS) matching program with the Ontario Tuition Grant program that provides scholarship assistance directly to students. Since 1996, thanks to the generosity of donors and provincial government matching, the Trent University student financial aid endowment has grown by $16.4 Million.

enna Cameron, International Development Studies/Indigenous Studies graduate, was awarded the prestigious Gzowski Internship at CBC, one of four university students chosen annually.

After a week of training in the basics of radio production at the CBC in Toronto, Ms. Cameron spent the summer gaining first-hand experience and contributing to radio programming and production.

Jenna’s commitment to a range of global issues, including contemporary Indigenous Canadian relations and an interest in Latin American history, made her a unique and interesting fit for the internship. n April 2012, Trent University announced the naming of the Martin Family Biomaterials Laboratory at a special gathering at the Trent Centre for Biomaterials Research (TCBR) with guest of honour, Mr. John Martin and his family in attendance.

Dr. Suresh Narine, director of the TCBR, Ontario research chair in green chemistry and engineering, NSERC/GFO/ERS senior industrial research chair in lipid derived biomaterials, noted that the Martin family’s legacy of commitment to the community of Peterborough, Trent University and the Biomaterials research program had been integral to the successful work of the TCBR to date.

tanding six feet tall, Portal is a sculpture that now sits on the east bank of Symons campus. Many partners in the community donated valuable resources in expertise, technology and transportation to bring Portal to the landscape. A donation by alumnus David James ’68, Portal is a reminder of the legacy and presence of previous generations on campus.

Designated a significant cultural property by Canadian Heritage, Portal is made of Belfast black granite from Zimbabwe and weighs in at 8,000 pounds.

A small companion piece by the same name, but made of glass is on display inside the Bata Library.

Trent University Receives $250,000 Gift from TD Bank Group TD Green Undergraduate Awards and Scholarships Fund Supports Students in Environmental Areas of Study TD was a founding contributor to Trent University in its establishment in 1964, and as Trent gears up for its 50th anniversary celebrations, it gratefully acknowledges TD for its support in a number of programs throughout Trent’s history. This $250,000 gift is the largest gift TD has ever made to the University.

Heroism by Trent Students Rewarded by Grateful Citizen and Community Member Nursing students and emergency responders in the right place at the right time

C

indy Ellen Morgan said good-bye to her father as he passed away in April 2012 – something she would not have been able to do if it weren’t for the decisive actions of Trent University students who were in the downtown area when he got into a car accident.

Well trained in emergency response, a total of five Trent students responded to the emergency and offered their assistance in the situation.

Some were nursing students and some also members of the Trent University Emergency

First Response Team (TUEFRT), which provides emergency medical care in situations on the University campus as part of a tiered response with EMS and Fire Services.

“Hearing about the actions of the students on the day of the accident, and now meeting two of them, it’s clear to me that they have not only chosen to serve in the helping professions, but have true vocations. They put themselves out there, not for recognition or reward, but because it was the right thing to do. I feel certain

they will help many, many more people during their careers,” said Ms. Morgan.

The Morgan family decided to make a memorial donation to the School of Nursing Bursary at Trent University and have asked that all memorial donations in Mr. Morgan’s honour be directed there. They will also be making a donation in support of TUEFRT, which will help train more students in emergency response.
