The Trend office is filled with anticipation at the moment in the hope of a gloriously sunny, warm summer. With the exception of Ryan and Stephen, we’re optimistically hoping to cast off our winter plumage and emerge in a froth of floaty florals and sandals looking like a mid-Seventies shampoo ad. It’d be easier if the sudden hail storms would stop, though.

THE PERFECT

beach body? Every year we’d like hit the beach with confidence, but that six-pack looks like a keg and there’s no danger of being mistaken for a supermodel. So are there any magic fixes to get you that perfect beach bod? Nope. The good news is that if you work at it, and follow these tips, you can begin to change your body for the better in just a few weeks:

Cut your calories under your daily recommended intake by around 500 kcals per day. Avoid processed foods, opt for natural foods and as many fresh veg as possible.

Lay off the booze and drink 3-4 litres of ice cold water per day.

Lift some weights to increase your metabolism and burn calories. High Intensity Interval Training is a great way to increase your energy expenditure. Use a personal trainer for a few sessions and get a structured program for optimal results.

WITH MATT OF FINNIES THE JEWELLER The debate is still raging between digital disciples and traditionalists after the recent launch of the new Apple watch. While some in the traditional watch industry may be apprehensive about smartwatches, there are others who see their merits. I believe there is a place for both traditional watchmaking and digital innovation. The Apple Watch launch has made watchmakers sit up and take notice and it has shone a spotlight on the industry

as a whole which is fantastic. I think there is a place for everything and nothing can quite compare with the craftsmanship and skill that goes into creating a fantastic watch. It is not a case of having to either have the Apple Watch or a traditional one. At the end of the day people often aspire towards the higher end and that is something that is never going to change.

MATTHEW FINNIE is recognised as one of Britain’s leading watch buyers and is the specialist within the management team at Finnies the Jeweller in Aberdeen, a family firm which has been serving the North-east for almost 60 years from its George Street store. hoosing the right school for your child is a complex and emotional decision, particularly when it comes to finding the optimal learning and development environment for girls. Every parent wants the best for their child; the perfect blend of a supportive learning environment where girls are stretched and challenged, but also encouraged to take part in sports, drama, music, art, extra-curricular activities and where they are nurtured to become well-rounded and confident in their abilities. This is where Kilgraston, the exceptional girls’ boarding school, comes in.

excellent teaching with traditional core values, developing the pupils’ intellectual qualities alongside personal growth, kindness, respect for others, and encouraging curiosity and a contribution to society. It’s a place where pupils are genuinely happy, free from the social pressures prevalent in many schools. Here, girls have the chance to fulfil their true potential in a supportive learning and social environment, making lifelong friends.

Kilgraston is a world away from the old-fashioned notion of a girls’ boarding school as a jolly hockey sticks, St. Trinian’s

You’ll find a huge sports hall, swimming pool, floodlit tennis courts, a new language lab, science centre, theatre, three astroturf pitches, stables and even a recording studio on the exceptionally well equipped Kilgraston Estate. Boarders,

from the age of eight to eighteen, live in informal houses in small groups, benefiting from individual attention.

As you’d expect from such a wellequipped school, Kilgraston’s academic results are outstanding, with many of the pupils going on to top UK universities and a wide range of courses. Over half of upper sixth form pupils hold unconditional offers from their chosen universities and there are plenty of academic studies that prove that - for girls, single-sex education results in more confident, self-assured pupils with improved exam results. Amongst other accolades, Kilgraston is the Scottish Independent School of the Year and there are a number of scholarships and bursaries available. It’s not just about outstanding academic achievement at Kilgraston; the emphasis is also on producing well-rounded, articulate, compassionate and confident pupils, who can deal with anything life throws at them with resilient aplomb. The school attracts top class teaching talent, under the aegis of School Principal Mrs Dorothy MacGinty. There are around 300 girls at Kilgraston, half of whom board and half are day pupils. Most are UK based, some with ex-pat parents and others come to the rolling Perthshire acres from overseas. Kilgraston remains an all-girls school, with the exception of the day nursery, where many of the pupil’s younger siblings, both male and female, get off to the best of starts.

Kilgraston was founded in 1933 by nuns from the Sacred Heart Society and is part of a network of schools spanning Australia, Canada, the USA and Malta. Although the nuns departed decades ago, the school still retains a strong commitment to faith, with a mass on Sundays. While the school retains a Catholic tradition, many of the pupils are of other faiths or no faith, with under a fifth of boarders coming from overseas. They say that your school days are the happiest days of your life. Thanks to the school’s unbeatable combination of an inclusive, caring, vibrant school community, impressive resources, small classes, dedicated staff and world-class education, at Kilgraston that may well be true.

ROSEMARY MCCANN

ith so many news items featuring the demise of the high street and independent shops it is heartening to read that this month Nova, the gift shop in Chapel Street, is celebrating 50 years of trading on the same site and under the same ownership.

Nova was established at around the same time as Laura and Bernard Ashley started out printing tea towels on their kitchen table and Nova was one of their first customers. The familiar logo was designed by a Gray’s post graduate student Donald Addison and it has remained fresh and stylish for 47 years.

Back in 1965 Rosemary was frustrated that all the new design led products she saw in magazines were largely only available in London shops. Her interest in modern design was the driving force compelling her to open Nova and bring the clean lines of Scandinavian design to Aberdeen.

The shop was the first to introduce wedding lists and a personal gift-wrapping service, and this pioneering style has enabled Nova to trade successfully through the ups and downs of the last 50 years. Celebrations took place on Thursday 23rd April with a 1960s themed day in the shop. www.novagifts.co.uk

LESLEY KELLY was the lucky winner of a beautiful Raymond Weil ‘Noemia’ watch as featured in the Finnies competition in our Feb/ Mar issue of Trend. Pictured here is the delighted Lesley being presented with her prize from Matthew Finnie. ‘I was so excited to receive the call saying I’d won the competition. It was great going into the shop, especially as I’d worked just a few feet away a number of years ago. The watch was fitted to my wrist while I waited so I walked away with it there and then. I love it! A big thanks to Finnies and Trend’

Whether you are glamping on our shores or jetting off to distant lands, you’ll want to look your best. And whilst we still like to sport a healthy glow, gone are the days of baking in the sun to achieve patchy and damaging results. Here at Trend, we have rounded up a holiday bag of sophisticated products from respected brands to have you glowing from top to toe, and don’t forget the SPF!

CLARINS RADIANCE PLUS GOLDEN GLOW BOOSTER is the winner of the Best New Self-Tan Product, and rightly so. We tested this with the HydraQuench SPF 15 moisturiser for normal to dry skin, two drops in with the usual amount you would apply to the face, and hey presto, a natural-looking golden glow that is simple to apply and convincing to husbands, as in ‘You don’t need foundation as you’ve got a bit of a tan from being outside’. High recommendation indeed. Clarins also do the same in a slightly larger container for the body, and recommend 3-4 drops to add to your favourite body moisturiser.

BOBBI BROWN’S SHIMMERING SANDS EYE PALETTE is a fantastic travel size product with 12 shades of glittering glamour to choose from. Their back-to-basics approach lets you create a range of classic looks, layering subtle shades to achieve a grown-up look.

NUXE HUILE PRODIGIEUSE® OR DRY OIL GOLDEN SHIMMER 50ML is available from Marks & Spencer and is truly a wonder product. Its multi-purpose formula makes it a holiday must-have as it will transform your face, body and hair from one little bottle. A unique combination of six concentrated natural oils including Borage, St. John’s Wort, Sweet Almond, Camellia, Hazelnut, Macadamia as well as Vitamin E and no preservatives or mineral oils makes this product a natural choice. Easily absorbed and applied, your skin and hair will be left sensual, soft and shimmering.

BOBBI BROWN SANDY NUDES COLLECTION is inspired by the shades and textures of sand from beaches around the world. Perfect for complementing your healthy tanned look are two limited edition nail varnishes called Nude and Naked, both adding an ever-so subtle touch of colour.

Chanel LUMIÈRE D’ETÉ ILLUMINATING POWDER in Golden Bronze is by far the prettiest compact we have seen in some time, but beauty is as beauty does, so we wanted to see the results. This powder looks dark in the compact, but goes on so sheer that you can apply to cheekbones, forehead and lids to give your skin a subtle summer glow. This isn’t a bronzer, but will complement a tan perfectly, and adding an extra layer at night will boost your look. Long lasting on the skin and in the packaging, this is a keeper.

Illamasqua is an exciting make-up brand developed for professional make-up artists, with its roots in the dark 1920s club scene - hailed as champions of creativity and empowerment since they were launched in London in 2008. Their GLAMORE LIPSTICK in Starkers is a summer make-up necessity. Long-lasting hydration and satin comfort finish will have you rocking this year’s nude look. And for the very brave, there is a cobalt blue lipstick called Vendetta in Illamasqua’s brand new range To Be Alive….go on, we dare you! All products available at Boots, Debenhams & John Lewis.

Lucy McLeod and her team are creating a bit of a stir at The Dormouse & Teacup, a vintage retro teashop with a difference in Inverurie. Ask any mother and they’ll tell you that it’s still difficult to find a good place for a cup of tea and a chat, which actively welcomes and caters for children yet still appeals to adults. Often the options come down to plastic ball pits, equally plastic sandwiches or stiff chairs. However, D&T truly succeeds in evoking a home from home atmosphere coupled with gorgeous grub that’s a hit with customers of all ages. Tiny felt dormice, each with its own name, pop their heads out from shelves, pretty crockery vies with vintage aprons for kitsch appeal and the whole place is an eclectic treat where children are enthralled by the décor and really made to feel at home by the staff. As one of nine children, Lucy has sought to recreate the atmosphere of busy family mealtimes - full of

happy chatter, fun and contentment. Children love the smoothies, fresh fruit juices and milkshakes on offer and both of the menus are carefully designed using quality ingredients, locally sourced where possible, to make fun, balanced and inspired dishes. Naked Bean Coffee, 14 types of Teapigs tea, as well as a great selection of Fentimans botanical juice drinks will satisfy thirsty adults, as will the rotating menu featuring ten scrumptious types of cake, including a lighter option and a gluten free choice. The full afternoon tea is a yummy delight, with delicious fruit tarts, macaroons and potted desserts. It’s easy to see why The Dormouse & Teacup has become such a huge hit since it opened. It’s a real treat for the whole family. Unit C, Burnside, West High Street, Inverurie Tel: 01467 621722 The-Dormouse-Teacup

A SLICE OF SOCIAL ENTERPRISE If you’ve munched your way through the bread basket at some of the North-east’s best regarded hotels and restaurants, or popped into the bakery and café on Rosemount Viaduct, you’ll already know that The Breadmaker makes some of the best bread you’ll ever taste, as well as delicious snacks and patisserie. Go behind the scenes and you’ll discover there’s a lot more to the business... The Breadmaker’s story starts many years ago with Doctor Denis Durno, who became convinced of the benefits of an inclusive and supported work environment for adults with learning disabilities through his work with similar organisations. He was keen to create a business where adults with a learning disability could participate in the every aspect of the work, helping to break down barriers and change attitudes. Since opening in 2006, The Breadmaker has gone from strength to strength. The apprentices are at the heart of everything the bakery does. Over fifty apprentices have been engaged with the scheme so far, working alongside staff and a dedicated band of volunteers.

It’s real work in a real work environment, with many of the current apprentices working towards SVQ qualifications in employability skills, attending courses at college and placements with other employers. Importantly, the apprentices develop a varied social life, with recreational and fitness activities, giving the opportunity to participate in city life more fully. The Breadmaker have diversified into supplying high quality buffets to corporate clients as well as wholesale bread and confectionery to many top hotels and restaurants. It’s an enormously valuable service for adults with a learning disability as so much of who we are is defined by what we do. Apprentices gain real skills, self-esteem, social inclusion, new friends and an enormous sense of achievement from being part of a thriving business. All that, and they make the best bread in the city. 50 - 52 Rosemount Viaduct, Aberdeen AB25 1NT Tel: 01224 641250 admin@thebreadmaker.org.uk www.thebreadmaker.org.uk

of chips and salad. My friend chose the daily special, a liberal serving of stovies served with beetroot and skirlie and a pile of oatcakes. This proved to be well balanced and flavoursome, with a great consistency and just the right amount of beef. Certainly no need for the usual game of hunt the meat.

As well as a good selection of well-cared for plants and a gift shop which is great for browsing around, Mains of Drum is also home to a great informal café restaurant. Heading upstairs to the light and airy restaurant space, we were struck by the happy buzz of contented chatter coming from customers. It’s popular with families and friends, partly due to the extensive menu that means there’s always something to appeal, no matter the time of day or how peckish you are. There’s everything from sandwiches and light bites to steaks and daily specials. I chose to start with a hearty bowl of Cullen Skink, brimming silkily with fish, leeks and tatties and served with delicious bread freshly baked on the premises.

Service was swift and the staff are all friendly and courteous and seem to enjoy their work. Everything is locally sourced where possible, with the menu listing the suppliers. We discovered this while deciding on dessert, which we didn’t really need. Still, the homemade rice pudding with two spoons went down a treat. Light but comforting, and spotted with sultanas, I’m afraid it was even better than my mum’s. Sorry Mum!

Aberdeen’s award-winning late-night cocktail bar Orchid is glowing with new sophistication. The favourite haunt of discerning drinkers is brimming with a re-defined style - a heady combination of classic élan with a sense of cutting edge and a dash of deco. Think parquet flooring, sleek dark leather and contemporary copper, a nod to the intrigue of the speakeasy with a modern twist. Against a dramatic backdrop of gorgeous teal blue, a wall studded with scores of cocktail shakers and lit by a glittering array of bare bulbs and shimmering copper storm lanterns; Orchid still delivers the ultimate cocktail experience, but now there’s plenty of space for mingling with friends or colleagues or to sit quietly nursing one of the bar’s signature mixed drinks. Ben Iravani, managing director of Monkey Bars Ltd. which runs the venue, worked with Grant Christie of local firm ECO Joinery and Orchid’s general manager Martin Farmer, to come up with the concept which

46

reflects the contemporary, sophisticated style of the drinks and service. As a result they’ve pulled off a metamorphosis which simply enhances the bar’s upmarket reputation. The layout has been reconfigured to introduce three large, leather booths at the back of the venue, ideal for large parties or events - corporate evenings, gin and whisky tasting and mixology classes are hugely popular - but there are also more intimate seating areas to enjoy a more leisurely drink. ‘Although there are classic touches we’re a modern bar. We’ve evolved and we’re ahead of the game’, says Ben. ‘The transformation is beautiful and we’re enjoying introducing established customers and new visitors to Orchid’s new sense of style.’

Most outdoor living and entertaining areas include a seating area of some sort. In the North of Scotland we spend a great deal of our year chasing the sun and so it’s important to work out how the sun works in your garden.

It sounds so logical to position the seating area immediately next to the rear of the house for easy access but depending on which direction this faces it may not get any sun at all! The orientation of your house and garden may mean that that the sun falls in one area in the morning (east-facing) and another in the afternoon (south-facing) and even a third area (west-facing) in the early evening. Deciding where to position

your main seating area will rely on these factors, but having worked out where this is going to be, don’t be afraid to have occasional seating areas for morning coffee and that last gasp of sun in the evening, this can create interest and character in even the smallest of garden spaces. The main seating area is where all the action is going to take place, so it’s important to consider the maximum number you are likely to cater for regularly, what size and

Holidays! We all look forward to them. A time to relax, de-stress, have fun. We arrive at the airport with bags packed, ready to fly to our holiday paradise. But then the trouble begins; delayed flights, missed connections, cancelled flight equals grumpy kids, stress levels rocketing, frantic phone calls! And when we do eventually get to our destination there is no luggage. I am sure that many of us have had these experiences, which put a damper on the start or end of our holidays. Then we face a battle when we get home, with the airline telling us to claim from our travel insurers, and the travel insurers rejecting many of the claims and then deducting a large excess from the proposed compensation. If the airlines are pushed, most will adopt the tactic of stonewalling, or will claim ‘technical difficulties’. The stubborn among us may eventually get satisfaction, but only after raising court action.

However the answer to our problems lies with EC regulation 261/2004 and the recent interpretation of it by the Supreme Court. The Regulation establishes passengers rights if they are denied boarding against their will, their flight is cancelled, or their flight is delayed. In the event of flight cancellation or denied boarding passengers are entitled to reimbursement of ticket costs, or return flight to first point of departure or rerouting to their final destination. They can also claim for care such as meals, accommodation and the like. Finally they can claim between 250 and 600 euros depending on the flight distance and destination, plus expenses. The Supreme Court have now ruled that passengers

As you can imagine this has not gone down well with the airlines, and I haven’t yet seen signs at airports drawing passenger’s attention to their rights! I expect that they will continue to adopt the approach of golden silence when a claim is intimated to them. For lost or delayed luggage, there may be a claim under the Montreal Convention. So, let me take the stress out of your claim, by instructing me to pursue it on your behalf. And remember - keep your booking confirmation, boarding card, luggage tag, and receipts for any costs incurred. These will be required for a successful claim.

26TH JUNE FESTIVAL DI SPOLETO The classical music event combines the charms of a medieval hilltop town with a series of open air concerts in the main piazza throughout June and July. Conducted with typical Italian warmth, style and a slightly chaotic edge, the programme features young musicians, modern opera and some big league performers. Spend the days exploring ancient hamlets and olive groves, palazzos and picking up cashmere, silk and Italian leather goods at the region’s designer outlet stores. www.festivaldispoleto.com for details.

7TH JULY PAMPLONA BULL RUN One for the boys now, since the Pamplona Bull Run seems to appeal to masculine sensibilities, though women can and do participate. The route covers 825 metres to the bull ring, with runs being conducted each morning from 7th-14th July. Outwith the thrills and spills of running with bullocks, the Navarre region of Spain offers gorgeous countryside with the Parque Natural Urbasa Andia filled with tranquil waterfalls and hiking trails just an hour or so from the bustle of Pamplona.

10TH JULY T IN THE PARK Thankfully, a festival break needn’t be all knee deep mud and hour long queues for Stygian portaloos. Hire a camping pod, campervan or even a luxury Winnebago if slumming it isn’t your style. If you book well in advance, you can stay off site in luxury - this year, T in the Park is moving to Strathallan Castle, almost on Geneagles’ doorstep, so you can nip back for a quick spa treatment if you don’t fancy what’s on the main stage.

Glastonbury may be sold out months in advance, but there are plenty of fantastic festivals which could make the perfect centrepiece of your short break this summer. Whatever your taste, from Wagner to waltzes, from death metal to sun-drenched europop, from

27TH AUGUST LA TOMATINA For a more upbeat weekender, try Ibiza, which is Europe’s party central over the summer season. For something different, the town hosts a Medieval Fair over several days in early May, or you can take part in the celebrations of Sant Ciriac on 8th August which culminate in a huge watermelon fight followed by a fireworks display. If you get a taste for massive food fights, you’ll love La Tomatina in Bunol, near Valencia on 26th August. Over 125 tonnes of squishy, over-ripe tomatoes are hurled by an ocean of goggle-wearing revellers in what must be the world’s biggest mosh pit. It’s not for the faint hearted though.

30TH AUGUST BURNING MAN Less a festival and more an alternate reality, Burning Man takes place from 30th August to 7th September in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert. An entire city and culture spring out of the sands as thousands of people gather to create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. Art, performance and music seamlessly blend into a hedonistic spectacle where everyone’s a star. Couple Burning Man with a stay in Las Vegas to get kitted out for the trip and you either have a week to remember, or one that will remain a mystery for years to come.

With the School’s flexible approach, part-time study and blended method of learning, embracing face-to-face and on-line distance activities; students with no previous academic history but plenty of hands-on experience can now work their way to a BA degree, some in just a year. Sounds impressive and it’s undoubtedly hard work but it is revolutionising life for hundreds of people who would otherwise never have envisaged graduating with that prized qualification. Previously part-time study involved evening classes - a punishing schedule over several years, particularly after a hard day at work - but the parttime course is flexible, accessible and a departure from the traditional, providing opportunities for all ages and walks of life to widen their horizons while doing their day job anywhere in the world, including offshore.

For some it’s an opportunity to become a better manager, for others it’s a route to return to work, to overcome the current energy sector downturn or, in Jackie Allen’s case, change direction entirely. She ran her own award-winning retail business, The B’s Knees, for 25 years before switching careers in her 50s to become a self-employed business consultant. After graduating with the BA degree last year she says it has given her added confidence and professional credibility. ‘I’ve reinvented my career and got a thirst for knowledge. It was challenging, difficult sometimes, and you need focus and sheer determination, but if I can do it anybody can.’ Online applications for September’s intake are open now. If you were to wake up on any given morning and find yourself walking alongside Portsoy’s Old Harbour, you would be forgiven for thinking that you had been transported back in time, but never more so than during the town’s annual Scottish Traditional Boat Festival. The July Festival welcomes traditional sailing vessels, some over a century old, back to a harbour that once thrived on the spoils of the sea. Perched along the Moray Firth Coastline, Portsoy was initially famed for its serpentine marble and eventually for its herring fleet which brought affluence to the area during the late 1800s. Largely unchanged, Portsoy today boasts some of the most pristine coastal scenery that Scotland has to offer. With the arrival of the boat festival each year comes an infusion of colour that makes the view all the more spectacular. Although maritime history is at the heart of the festival, there is so much more on offer here. In fact, this is a celebration that will excite all of your senses. The sound of live music

washes the streets, offering a very Scottish soundtrack of twanging banjos, pipe bands, and even the odd drum corps. Local artisans provide a backdrop of handcrafted treasures, with everything from jewellery to furniture on display. But nothing will grab your attention more quickly than the smell of smoking haddock which fills the air and insists that you really must give it a try. The importance of food and drink at the Portsoy Boat Festival cannot be overstated, so go on an empty stomach because you will not want to deny yourself the delicious offerings. Of course, there are also activities galore - from Teddy Bear picnics to coracle rowing and everything in between, even a 10k and fun run aptly named Follow the Herring. No matter who you are looking to entertain, there is something of interest for everyone at Portsoy’s Boat Festival. www.stbfportsoy.com

construction, I don´t do it like that! For me, the best way to develop work is to sit at my workspace and to start to saw and weld, looking to find the next piece shape. My approach is to work by hand from the start. To melt the metal, to make the wire or sheet passing the metal through the rolling mill until it’s the right thickness to start to work. In jewellery one millemetre makes all the difference. ‘This part of the work is very demanding, but for me, it’s always magic. Then the production process starts. It’s the kind of work where you can spend a long time working on one piece, becoming really involved with it.

‘My style is contemporary, modern, clean, minimalist. I’m trying to reach simplicity and beauty. It provides an easy communication between the piece and the person who wears or appreciate it.

‘My inspiration comes from daily life, and I try to keep my senses refined so that I can use images, stories, objects, even sounds or messages, I also try to explore different raw natural materials. I just can’t stop collecting things to use as inspiration or materials for my jewellery.

‘Although I was trained to put my ideas down on paper, to then make a model and only afterwards to start the

situation and I’m hoping to find a space where I can set up an atelier with all the heavy tools I need to keep producing and developing my work. I’d also love to offer classes and workshops facilitating the exchange of knowledge and techniques. ‘Over the years, I’ve developed from a hobbyist to a professional. I am the jewellery designer, the crafter, the manager, the photographer and the model, all in one. Instead of producing one piece, now I have to be

able to produce ten or twenty, and in the future one hundred, and to think of pieces as part of a potential collection. My jewellery is meant to be simple, beautiful and unique. The pieces tell their own story, and it’s wonderful when people understand the meaning of it.

WORDS BY COURTNEY O’GRADY

Hippy DAYS FROM THE MOMENT I LAID EYES ON HAMISH, I WAS SMITTEN. IT WAS THE HEADY FUSION OF HIS SMOOTH CURVES, HIS SOOTHING COLOUR PALETTE, AND A VINTAGE DESIGN THAT HARKED BACK TO SIMPLER TIMES. SOME MIGHT SAY THAT ALL VINTAGE VW CAMPERVANS ARE CREATED EQUALLY, BUT HAMISH IS SPECIAL. AND HE IS NOT ALONE... At Deeside Classic Campers there is a growing fleet of V-Dubs that have been lovingly rebuilt to an exacting standard under the direction of Claire Page, an enthusiast who started the business in 2014. At present, there are three immaculate vans available to hire - Hamish and Fergus for touring and camping and Angus, a split screen VW designed especially for champagne-sipping brides who want to make an unforgettable entrance on their big day. For our own weekend adventure, we loaded into Hamish and headed for the hills. Slipping behind

Hamish’s wheel had the calming effect of a hot bath, instantly the rush of normal life slipped away and we began taking things at Hamish pace. I can honestly say that I have never enjoyed driving more, it was almost a shame to park up for the night, but then we would never have known just how clever Hamish really is. When it comes to mobile camping, there can be no design superior to that of a VW. With a few simple adjustments, the same campervan that manoeuvres through traffic like a car transforms into a small apartment complete with dining table, cooker, sink, and sleeping space for four adults. And for those who like

their creature comforts, Deeside campers even have modern stereo systems and a DVD player. If you crave a holiday that combines first-class comfort with frivolity, you really must reserve a Deeside Classic Camper. With everything from bedding to luxury hampers on offer, you really only need to turn up and take off, either for the woods or your favourite caravan park. Just be warned, a ride this enviable does not go unnoticed, so prepare to attract attention wherever you go. www.deesideclassiccampers.com

Life’s a

BEACH Choosing a book to take on holiday is never easy. Going by the broadsheets, the great and the good pack some very heavyweight literature into their carry on cases, but the beach is no place for a treatise on the economic policies of the Weimar Republic. Don’t leave it till you’re going through to Departures to pick something up or you’ll be stuck with James Patterson, a self-help manual, or the biography of some airheaded reality TV star. We say lighten up and opt for a book you’ll enjoy…

FUNNY GIRL | Nick Hornby The latest sweet-centred novel from the ever reliable Nick Hornby follows the story of beauty queen Barbara Parker, who finds herself transformed into Sophie Straw, the star of a swinging sixties TV comedy programme and the whirl of London life that encompasses. With a strong supporting cast of characters from behind the scenes and in front of the camera, it’s an exuberantly entertaining read.

HOW TO BE BOTH | Ali Smith Scottish writer Ali Smith has a good track record of producing thoughtprovoking but enjoyable books, but she can be prone to valuing clever conceits over entertainment. How to be both is one of those Marmite books - something you’ll either love or hate. The entwined tales of a 15th century girl fresco painter and a sixties teenager reflecting on a holiday to Italy before her mother died, demand a fair bit of concentration.

CROW HOLLOW | Michael Wallace Sometimes you just need a good murder or two as you lie in the sun. This engrossing historic mystery follows widowed puritan Prudence Cotton and the lecherous British agent James Baily in the US colonies in the 1670s as they attempt to rescue her daughter from a Native American tribe. It’s a stark, but well drawn, tale of social constraint and unbelievable everyday hardship.

There’s more to a happy childhood than Grand Theft Auto, so sign them up for one of this summer’s organised sports activities taking place throughout the city and shire. Fresh air, healthy exercise and best of all - they’ll have to put their phone down for a while…

ON THE BALL

Ace Football Coaching (www.acefootball.co.uk) offer summer camps with SFA qualified coaches for girls and boys between 5 and 15 at the International School’s facilities. Courses are £70 for a week, with six weekly blocks over the summer

IN THE SWIM

There are council run-pools in most of the larger towns in Aberdeenshire and several across the city. Many run swimming classes for beginners, as do Aberdeen Aquatics www.sportaberdeen.co.uk/ aquatics More confident youngsters might want to join a swimming club. Aberdeen Amateur Swimming Club (www.aberdeenasc.org.uk) is running two intensive improvers’ courses in August and also offers Junior Water Polo sessions at Aberdeen International School. Contact Neil Kennedy at aascwaterpolo@hotmail.co.uk for details.

WHAT A RACQUET!

Both Cults Tennis Club and Rubislaw are keen to attract more junior players and organise coaching and competitions for younger players. The Westburn Centre offers some free coaching sessions and junior activities over the summer.

PONY EXPRESS

Pony trekking and riding lessons are always popular pastimes. Hayfield Riding Centre (www.hayfield.com) in Hazlehead Park is good with children of all ages and abilities. Inexperienced children from age 4 to 8 can go for a gentle walk in the park, with their ponies led by the centre’s staff. More experience riders can go trekking, go for a picnic ride or a canter along the beach.

LONACH SOCIETY CALLS FOR SPONSORSHIP TO BOOST EVENT An Aberdeenshire organisation is aiming to make a greater contribution to the local economy which it has been supporting for nearly two centuries. Held on the fourth Saturday in August, the Lonach Highland Gathering and Games is one of North-east Scotland’s best known and most popular traditional summer events, attracting up to 10,000 visitors annually to the wee town of Bellabeg. However, with costs associated with holding outdoor events increasing, despite massive volunteer support - organisers are looking to boost the level of income through sponsorship, and are encouraging local businesses to get in touch. This year’s event is on Saturday 22nd August - for more info www.lonach.org
