Paused at the traffic lights at the top of Holburn Street a couple of Sundays ago, a figure caught my eye amongst the sea of drably clad, heads-down shoppers in their blacks, greys, and muddy neutrals. A woman had stepped out of a doorway and crossed the road. She was resplendent in a blinged-up, sequinned dress, topped off with an exuberant gold lamé headdress. Perhaps she was attending a wedding, but the effect was like a fabulous storybook princess had stepped off the page and was having a great time in the centre of Aberdeen. This was a woman we can all learn from. Embrace life - go new places, try new things, try a new recipe, visit a new place, take up a new hobby, buy something in a new style, colour or silhouette. As ever, we’re here to help you get the most from your life. We say you deserve a life that sparkles and shines. We say dress up. We say go for the gold lamé. This spring, live your life in full colour!

KILMANIAN IS TURNING HEADS The award-winning Kilmanian Hair Studio is turning heads with its reputation for excellence, personal attention and life-transforming cuts and colour. From the moment you enter Kilmanian’s luxuriously private rococo salon, you’re treated like a VIP. Under the direction of Dean Morrice, who recently won the prestigious Young Male Talent for Scotland award at the INAA Hair & Beauty Awards, the relaxing retreat has built up a phenomenal reputation for flattering cuts and colour work.

Now’s a great time to get out of the gym, or off the couch and get outside! Running is an easy way to get fit, so here are our tips for beginners…

Dean explained, ‘I give each client one to one service - from consultation, scalp massage and a fabulous new hair style, to suit each specific lifestyle and personality. My goal is to make my clients look and feel fantastic.’ For the gentlemen, Dean and Colin have The Barber Stop, a popular walk-in barbershop for local residents and time-pressed workers based in Altens and Tullos.

> Warm up with some walking and do some squats, lunges, and calf raises. > Start with a mixture of brisk walking and jogging a couple of times a week. Take a stopwatch and jog for a minute followed by a minute of walking. Aim for 16 minutes, then build it up with longer runs. COLIN & DEAN MORRICE > Run on paths and in parks rather than pavements to reduce the stress on your joints. > Use apps like Endomondo and mapmyrun to map your routes and track progress. > Join your gym’s jogging club or find a group at jogScotland. > Always stretch your calves, quads, and hamstrings at the end of your run. Good luck and enjoy the spring and summer getting into the best shape of your life!

Qualified Sports Masseur Sam Clark, who works at Kippie Lodge, says you don’t need to be an athlete to benefit from treatment. ‘I qualified in Remedial and Sports Massage after my degree in Sports and Exercise Science. As a member of the swimming, boxing and climbing societies, it was inevitable I’d spend time with therapists and learning more about sports injuries!’ Sam explained. ‘Sports massage provides many benefits, from reducing pain and muscle tension, to improving joint mobility,

circulation and lymphatic drainage. I see people from all walks of life, from young athletes to people who’ve injured themselves gardening or have back or neck problems from sitting at a desk all day. ‘Sports massage can be more beneficial than other types of massage because we work deeper in the muscle tissue to alleviate tightness and adhesions. Studies also suggest massage can improve immunity, and can also relieve tension brought on by stress and depression.’ Tel: 01224 734747

DE-ZIRE IN THE WEST END Trend’s favourite lingerie store has moved to Aberdeen. De-Zire, previously based in Inverurie, has opened a new store at 36A Thistle Street, in the heart of Aberdeen’s West End. The intimate new store features De-Zire’s subtle but alluring approach to décor. Inside, you’ll find a great selection of lingerie from some of the most flattering brands that can’t be found on the high street.

specialising in seductive designs with price labels that won’t make you swoon. Hotmilk is the beautiful maternity and nursing brand for that offers something other than white cotton.

De-Zire owner Susan Evans stocks Maison Lejaby, the French lingerie house who have been underpinning designer garments since 1884, Aubade who excel in the seductive and sexy collections, and UK favourite Panache for the ultimate sports bra. Empreinte and Piege bring a long history of French style to their current ranges,

It’s the level of service and attention to detail that sets De-Zire above other lingerie suppliers, as Susan and her staff offering a fitting service, known as the De-Zire Experience, which is second to none. Susan explained, ‘We hope to help our customers understand the importance

of a well-fitting bra, especially when it comes to everyday underwear as this is on the longest and worn regularly, so it should be the best fitting bra. JEWELLERY TRENDS IN THE LIMELIGHT

...WITH STEWART DAWSON OF FINNIES THE JEWELLER

I am emigrating to Melbourne for a graphic design job. It’s so exciting, I am moving over in September, and all the planning for it is finally coming together.

In July I am off to Benicassim because my friends and I have had enough of T in the Park and we want to branch out and do different festivals around the world.

I am going to Paris and Amsterdam at the end of August this year. I fly to Paris for 5 days, then from Paris to Amsterdam for another 5 days. I have a German penpal so we are meeting half way in Paris and go on holiday together!

This year I would like to holiday in St Petersburg because I’ve wanted to go there for some time. I think there will be lots of culture, and the city will be very touristy.

Fancy a sharp suit for spring? One lucky reader will be visiting Georgian Dress Hire in Rosemount’s Leadside Road to choose a fantastic tailored suit from their new Magee range. Magee may be a relatively new name for Men’s clothing in Aberdeen, as Georgian are the largest stockists, but the company has been making prestigious, well-tailored clothing for men and women since 1866. This means they know a thing or two about quality and longevity, though their take on stylish menswear has come a long way since John Magee first opened his drapery shop in Donegal. While Magee’s tailoring takes its cues from the top end continental designers, their suiting fabrics are all sourced from UK or Irish mills producing top quality cloth. If you’re looking for something for the weekends, rather than the boardroom, then they also make rugged sports jackets from traditional Donegal tweeds.

26

It’s not surprising that Magee have partnered with Georgian Dress Hire to bring the range to the North-east. Although Georgian have long been a city favourite for kilt and formal wear hire, they also stock an impressively well-chosen range of suits and sports jackets, as well as making kilts in-house and providing kilt jackets and accessories for sale. Their advice and service levels are second to none - not only providing alterations, but also offering a free kilt pressing service for the lifetime of any of their bespoke kilts. Our winner can choose a two piece suit made in any fabric from the Magee range, or opt for a more casual jacket and trousers, from Magee’s extensive coordinating casual collection. Georgian’s expert staff will

be on hand to advise on the most flattering tailoring and fabrics. They will also alter the suit to provide a bespoke fit. To enter, go to www.trendmagazine.co.uk and answer this question:

It might be the sight of crocuses, irises and daffodils poking through the soil; it might be the sun in a powder blue sky, but there’s something about spring that makes us want to break out the sugary colours. The spring’s catwalk palette combines pastels, intense primary colours and metallic accents. Candy clad separates, eveningwear and swimwear hit the stores every spring, but head to toe pinks, yellows or minty greens can easily look sickly rather than sweet. Give it a modern edge by introducing a colour pop in light knits, accessories and shoes. Metallic touches help to offset beautiful pastels and jewels, and toughen up girly hues. Take your catwalk cues from Chanel and Moschino by wearing a colourful item and combining it with a

WHAT’S NEW AT THE

AESTHETIC ROOM AT THE HOUSE? Over the past four years since opening at The House, the Aesthetic Room has gained an outstanding reputation for bringing the latest proven aesthetic treatments to Aberdeen. Experienced Aesthetic Nurse and Independent Prescriber, Louise Mackintosh is known for her safe, subtle and effective treatments and constant research into new technology. Louise offers a wide range of treatments including dermal fillers and wrinkle reducing injectables, for smoothing out lines, skin resurfacing and semi-permanent makeup as well as innovative treatments like Coolsculpting. Coolsculpting is one of the newest treatments available at the House. Louise has been offering Coolsculpting for 18 months, performing over seventy successful treatments which use a cryogenic treatment to freeze and kill fat cells in stubborn areas. Accredited medical studies from Harvard University show that Coolsculpting can kill off a third of the fat cells in the treatment area, while leaving other types of cells unharmed.

Most people don’t experience discomfort and many of Louise’s clients have been so impressed with their newly slimmer results that they’ve returned for treatment on additional areas of unwanted fat. Results develop slowly over three months as the treated fat cells are flushed out of the body. Louise explained, 'We offer a free, no-obligation consultation to those interested in Coolsculpting. People are welcome to get a better understanding of how Coolsculpting works and what it can do for them. We have our own ‘before and after treatment’ portfolio of photos and the Coolsculpting website is very helpful with videos of the procedure, so people can find out more. 'The treatment takes just a few hours. Most people find it pain-free, but there may be some discomfort in larger areas or for bigger treatment areas. Patients can drive home and resume their normal activities immediately.' Howies

JAN LEATHAM

Stroll along Chapel Street and you will happen upon Howies, no fanfare, no neon sign. And that tasteful and understated yet quirky Scottishness is echoed throughout the newly refurbished restaurant. Muted tones and natural materials blend with eclectic decoration and a joyful rediscovery of the original tiled floor of the legendary Gerrards. Lunch service was busy but very efficient and friendly, with manager Paul Jeffrey at the helm. With prices starting at two courses for £10, the lunch menu offers a choice which focuses on local produce and fresh ingredients. My starter salad was a divine blend of roast butternut squash, barley and red chard with juicy slices of orange (don’t you just love it when someone else peels an orange for you?), basil and toasted seeds - or as my companion put it, ‘a proper ladies who lunch salad’. Her roasted parsnip and cumin falafel with lemon houmous was also voted a success, and the rest of the starter selection really does focus on the local with Eyemouth Crab Bisque, Ham Hock and Smoked Pheasant Terrine and Steamed Shetland Mussels lining up to tickle your tastebuds. I am a sucker for risotto and the golden beetroot and thyme Howies’ version did not disappoint, with crispy kale and a poached egg for good measure. My friend went for the Howies burger which comes on a brioche bun with (drum roll) hand cut chips and bell pepper ketchup. I think I can say without fear of reprisal that this lady may have sampled a chip or two in her time, and she pronounced them excellent, along with the fresh-tasting pepper ketchup. Desserts were mandatory and we went for an affogato with lovely creamy homemade ice cream and a chocolate and beetroot torte which was light, tasty and calorie-free... well it was light and tasty anyway.

Howies is full of little things to catch your eye, an old sign, recycled whisky barrels, brass candlesticks and a canteen of bone-handled cutlery on the sideboard of one of the splendid new private rooms, both of which have a large table which you can just imagine having a family gathering or party around. The chairs are upholstered in contrasting tweeds, the walls painted dove grey and the whole effect is a mixture of the traditional and contemporary, with a Scottish underlay.

The best of SPRING

WITH EAT ON THE GREEN’S KILTED CHEF This is the year of Scottish Food and Drink, so why not make the most of local ingredients this Spring?

Served in a julep tin with some fresh mint and ground pink peppercorns as a garnish you get a lovely aroma of florality and very subtle spice. www.orchidaberdeen.com

The longer days and warmer weather mean that the first crops of green vegetables at their most delicious and tender. We grow a lot of our own veg at Eat on the Green, and everyone really enjoys the lighter tastes and freshness of baby spinach, salad leaves, pak choi, broccoli, kale, leeks and the first of the broad beans and peas. Try some fresh asparagus with lemon and butter or a homemade hollandaise sauce. Alternatively, sauté sliced onions in local rapeseed oil as it makes them sweetly flavoursome, then add in spring green veg, cook to your liking, add a splash of water and add some freshly chopped herbs at the last moment before serving. Simple and superb!

Amicus Apple’s Amicus Apple’sRyan RyanFowler Fowler As a child, Ryan Fowler was inspired to become a chef when watching and sampling his granny’s cooking. Ryan has worked his way from a first job in the kitchens at Dunfermline Football Club, via Nottingham, Edinburgh and Aberdeen to become the head chef at Amicus Apple. We found out more about Ryan’s approach to cooking and asked him to share one of his favourite recipes...

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF FOOD? I’d say my style is pretty rustic. It’s all about spending time to make sure food tastes good, but not over-complicating things. I try to create dishes that our customers will enjoy and I’m always open to suggestions or new ideas, so there’s always something new on the go.

IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT THREE FOODS WOULD YOU WANT WITH YOU? Definitely some brie. I love cheese and I’d also take some peppers and, assuming the island had some potatoes growing there, I’d make chips, so I’d want to take some peppercorn sauce to go with them.

RYAN’S CHICKEN WITH ROAST POTATO GNOCCHI (SERVES FOUR) INGREDIENTS: 4 chicken breasts 500g baking potatoes 50g grated cheddar 2 eggs, 1 additional yolk 150g “00” flour 300g wild mushrooms 20ml white wine 250ml cream 1 clove garlic 50g butter Olive oil (for cooking) 3 sage leaves 50g parmesan (shavings)

METHOD: Boil the whole potatoes with their skins still on in salted water. When soft, transfer to a hot oven to dry out for around 20 minutes. Cut the potatoes and check they are dry in the middle. To make the gnocchi, scoop out the potato and discard the skin, mix with the cheddar and a little salt in a large bowl. Mix well, then gradually add the eggs one by one, mixing to a puree-like consistency. Add the flour gradually, until the mixture has a doughy texture. Roll into a sausage shape on a floured work top, cut into 32-40 pieces, then set aside. Season the chicken well. Place the fillets skin side down in a hot pan with a little oil to get the skin nice and crispy, turn and seal. Put into the oven for 20 minutes at 1800C. Add the gnocchi to a frying pan with a little oil and butter, on a med/low heat. Once the gnocchi are golden, add the mushrooms and garlic. Sauté for couple of minutes, add wine and reduce by half. Add the cream and sage, cook until there is a nice creamy consistency. Remove chicken, rest for two minutes, then put eight pieces of gnocchi and plenty of sauce in each bowl. Slice the chicken in half, place on top of the gnocchi and finish with parmesan.

It may only have been open for a few months, but the engaging mix of picturesque harbour front location, outstanding interior design, great food and a warm welcome are already bringing Stonehaven’s Shorehead guest house rave reviews on Trip Advisor. Well-known local interior designer Jane Davidson and her multi-talented husband Earl have transformed her great-grandfather’s home on the harbourside at Stonehaven into a boutique guest house, furnished in Jane’s beautifully luxurious style. Both Jane and her mother were raised in the house, which makes for a wealth of fascinating tales about the characters who used to live there and along the harbourside.

Every aspect of the building, right down to the smallest detail has benefited from Jane’s design élan and Earle’s impressive building and joinery skills, providing a showcase for the pair’s design and interiors business which is based a few doors along at Jane’s Interiors, one of the North-east’s best loved home stores. The exposed stone walls in the executive lounge provide a baronial counterpoint to the comfy sofa, piled with cushions and the cosy breakfast area provides the ideal backdrop for the full Scottish, or a continental start to the day. Such is the combined appeal of the picturesque harbour views and opulent décor, that Shorehead is already receiving guests from all corners of the world, keen to experience the best of the North-east. Going by the guest reviews, Shorehead is already turning Stonehaven into Stone-heaven.

Each of the seven spacious bedrooms is individually designed in a rich palette of sumptuous fabrics and furniture, with free wi-fi, beautiful designer bathrooms, work and lounge areas and the same beds used in Aberdeen’s only 5 star hotel.

GOING POTTY When it comes to pots, there are so many different considerations in terms of shape, size, style, materials, placement and planting, that it’s often difficult to know where to get started. Here’s our guide to choosing containers without going potty! Given the weather conditions here, outdoor containers need to be frost resistant to survive through the winter. Soggy soil expands when frozen and can cause some pots to crack and break, so it is important to look at the type of compost mixture you are using, too.

Kirsty McLean has created hundreds of garden designs, for clients all over the North-east of Scotland and many community gardens in her work with Beechgrove Garden as guest designer since 2001.

Go for heavier materials such as granite, terracotta or ceramic which should be less likely to blow over in a gale. Wheeled pot supports make it easy to move the container around and help improve drainage. You’ll also want to either make sure your pot has drainage holes, or create some yourself. Fill your containers with a peat-free multi-purpose compost, as garden soil is too heavy. Soil based John Innes - composts are good for potted shrubs or long-term plants, while Japanese Maples, Rhododendrons and Camellias need an ericaceous compost. Tall containers can be weighed down by half-filling the pot with aggregate before overlaying this with a permeable membrane then adding about 500mm of compost on the top. You can also fill the bottom of a pot with broken

polystyrene if your spot is sheltered. Adding some water retaining crystals and slow release fertiliser granules will cut down your maintenance workload. For formal gardens, try Buxus spiral topiary in square lead cube planters, or try stone urns on pedestals overflowing with trailing ivy and hanging basket favourites for classic appeal. Terracotta containers look great with a standard bay tree, or go for a tall granite pot with Buxus balls. Want something funkier? Try a colourful glass fibre reinforced plastic container with a metallic finish with a spiky Yucca gloriosa.

There’s a small room for furniture and another filled with vintage clothing and accessories, as well as books and collectibles. There may be time for a few stops for nibbles en route… and who knows what treasures you may uncover? Heading out of town on the A947 towards Banff the first stop is Brian Cheyne’s Collecting the World in Newmachar, four rooms packed with an ever changing array of interesting pieces. If the shop’s not open, Brian has more stock at Norvite Farm and Country, about three miles further north. Further up the hill, neither ABRA antiques nor the antiquarian book shop was open for the season when we visited. WORDS BY JAN LEATHAM

From a specially blended green foundation by Mac to hand dyed sequins, it’s the exquisitely crafted details of Wicked that makes it into such a splendid overall experience. The story follows the friendship between Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good leading up to and including the arrival of Dorothy from Kansas, and is taken from a book by acclaimed American author Gregory Maguire which reimagines the world of Oz. The show is full-on visual and auditory delight, with an array of elaborate costumes worn by every member of the cast which look to have taken inspiration from the same dressing up box as Tim Burton. The winged monkeys are particularly arresting as they fly around to the bidding of the Wizard of Oz played by Stephen Pinder, who once upon a time was Max in Brookside!

The title role is played by Ashleigh Gray, who is delighted to return to her native Scotland with this incredibly successful UK tour. She and fellow witch Emily Tierney make a great effort to stay healthy with juices and smoothies for what are two truly demanding roles. Both actresses are on stage for the vast majority of the two and a half hour show, which includes quite a bit of swinging from the rafters as well as several big musical numbers. The remaining principal part of Fiyero is played by Samuel Edwards, admirably filling the role of a handsome posh boy who doesn’t play by the rules. The production is unusual in that it has not been downscaled from the original West End show, this

is often necessary as a result of budget or space constraints for touring productions, but the Company Manager is rightly proud of the fact that this is not the case with Wicked. The music and lyrics are written by Stephen Schwartz and the score is full of musical numbers which are both engaging and original, not least due to the presence of a live mini-orchestra and some extremely accomplished vocals. The show comes to Aberdeen from 5th to 30th May, and runs Monday to Saturday with two matinees a week. You’ll be green with envy if you miss it!

ART

LIFE’S RICH CANVAS Paul Ritchie’s heart may be in Collieston, where the wild Buchan coastline and ever-changing seascape provides artistic inspiration, but his journey through life has seen him exhibit at the Royal Academy, run a handmade watercolour paper company and even smoke herrings in his gallery space! We found out more… ‘My family were originally fishermen from Collieston and when I returned to Scotland in 2000, I decided to reinvent myself as a painter. I had studied fine art and advanced print making, before working at Peacock Printers in Aberdeen. I set up the Manchester Etching Workshop before running the Two Rivers Paper Company, which produced hand-made paper for artists,’ Paul began.

‘Recently I have been working on small studies of pears using innovative hybrid printing techniques to render a greater range of tones and textures, as well as larger than life, still life paintings. I don’t know if the big paintings will work, but I’m hoping the unconventional pairing of subject and scale might show still life in a different light.

‘My work is very much concerned with atmosphere, evoked using tone and texture. The rugged Buchan coast lends itself wonderfully to of this way of working. My work starts with outdoor sketches, which I use as an aide

‘I don’t normally work to commission, as I open my studio during NEOS in September and I will be showing at ArtAboyne in the summer. I’ve also had two of my works shortlisted for this year’s Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy and have had work

shown there 13 times before.

‘My work is in many public and private collections and can also be seen by appointment at my studio in Collieston in the Smokehouse Gallery. It’s closed during July and August as it doubles as a smoking shed where I kipper herrings that I catch in the summer!’ Tel: 01358 751216 ritchieart@yahoo.co.uk www.ritchieart.co.uk

E ST R E L L A S H I N E B R I G H T LY After the success of their debut album Come out to Play in 2012 Aberdeen band Estrella vowed to release a new album each year. But such was demand for their high-energy gigs they soon found themselves booked up with tour dates notably with Robin Beck and House of Lords, trouping across Europe. But now, after blocking out their diaries with studio time they are about to release that longawaited second album. The band comprises trio of brothers Paul, Luke and Nathan Gunn with “adopted” brother Leo McPherson finishing the line-up. Their unusual name - which means Star in Spanish - was set upon after a late night drinking session watching the film Rock Star in Spanish. And since the release of their first album the band’s

star has been burning bright. Building up a strong following both at home and abroad has seen them rack up some serious mileage in the tour bus, making studio time hard to factor in. ‘Early last year we went back into the studio but we had a seven week tour all over Europe - 29 dates in 15 countries - it was a great experience spending that much time on the road,’ said Luke, ‘but we did get back in the studio and got it finished off.’ The new album has been overseen by producer Nick Brine who has previously worked with The Darkness,

Bruce Springsteen and Oasis. After putting the finishing touches to the album they are now itching to hit the road once again. “Because we were in the studio so much last year we didn’t do as much gigging as we should have,” said Liam. They are already banking on 2015 being a busy year, with tour dates announced across the UK and into Europe as well as appearing at WILDFIRE at the end of June. www.estrellarocks.com

BOOKS

Whether you’re looking for some sartorial style, seeking a signature scent or simply seduced by fashion, our selection of books will delight and inspire you… THE FASHION BOOK (Phaidon.com, Amazon or Waterstones) offers the perfect overview of 20th and 21st Century fashion design, with archive photos spanning 140 years. The faultless pages are packed with features on designers, photographers, editors, models and style icons from Audrey Hepburn to Lady Gaga. It’s a fascinating insight into bygone names and current favourites and the sort of book you can dip into or pore over for hours at a time.

Aberdeenshire based author, Tessa Williams goes behind the scenes to explore the stories of some of the world’s most exclusive perfume houses and their creations in her captivating book, CULT PERFUMES (Amazon £20.37.) Tessa’s extensive grasp of and love for her subject is clear. It’s a great place to hunt for a signature scent or to understand more about what makes some perfumes so alluring and others such a mistake. We’d love a Scratch and Sniff edition!

Until early August, the V&A have a major retrospective of Alexander McQueen’s work, spanning his graduate collection to his final pieces. As you might expect, the companion book is a sumptuous, well-tailored tome, as sublime and startling as his creations. Each chapter explores a different aspect of his work, with contributions ranging from the informative to the baroque, but it’s the photos that make this a must buy. McQueen is probably the most influential designer of the past thirty years, and this book will play a convincing role in cementing his reputation as a sublimely gifted designer. (www.vandashop.com from £20.)

...much like lending your teenaged sister your latest designer dress, it’d be a serious mistake to lend any of these books to a friend. The temptation not to return them would be too great.

Ever wanted to make something, but didn’t have the high-tech equipment or the expertise to know where to start? Then MAKE Aberdeen is just the place for you.

DESIGN

WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

The well-equipped fabrication lab on Belmont Street offers inexpensive access to the latest 3D printers, laser cutters, 3D scanners, vinyl cutters, design and CAD software and even a digital embroidery machine. Better yet, the staff at MAKE are genuinely friendly, enormously helpful and really know what they are doing. There’s a good community vibe about the place, with people happy to share their ideas and experience. MAKE is a charity venture run by Peacock Visual Arts, with backing from Aberdeen City Council and Creative Scotland and is open to everyone in the region. It’s the city’s creative hub for personal manufacturing and shares premises with gallery space Seventeen. You don’t need to be a computer genius or fully-fledged engineer to make something you’ve always wanted, as MAKE’s Iain Gildea explained, ‘People can come in with a sketch on the back of an envelope and we can help them take their ideas and realise them. It’s incredibly satisfying to make something yourself - especially when you think it’s too difficult or you don’t have the skills to get started. ‘You can also download designs straight from the internet, then customise them or just use them as they are; it’s a good way to discover the capabilities of the equipment we have. Once people have made their first object, whether it’s a piece of jewellery or a Spiderman mask, they suddenly realise that the possibilities are exciting and almost infinite and it’s great to see people so enthused about the technology and so many ideas generated. ‘Some members have used the laser cutter to create paper cut wedding invitations and stationery, others have produced custom wooden iPhone cases, or cut out the parts to sew into leather slippers. The laser cutter works with wood, acrylic, leather or paper and card, so just about anything is possible. Architecture students use them to build models, and some people make cosplay accessories or use the printer for gadget prototypes that make life

house, which had ramps instead of stairs to each level. It’s probably the world’s most creative home for a tortoise! As well as students, creative professionals and hobbyists, MAKE’s facilities also attract small businesses, oil and engineering companies keen to prototype new ideas. It’s simple to become a member, with annual subscriptions for students costing £72, normal members £144 and small businesses £432. This gives you unlimited access to the shared workspace, personal training on the equipment, and advice on design, fabrication and trade price materials. If you’d rather use the lab on a one-off basis it’s £20 a session, with additional charges for machine time and materials. It’s maybe a bit early to be thinking about Christmas, but you could make some fabulous and unique gifts. MAKE is open on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 5pm and on Wednesdays from 1pm till 8pm. There are regular workshops on Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons, which can be booked in advance by phone. The team hopes to add further workshops in the coming months. It’s a brilliantly supportive way to learn how to use the latest personal manufacturing technologies in a welcoming and helpful environment. What will you make? The only limit is your imagination. 17 Belmont Street, Aberdeen AB10 1JR Tel: 07525123423 E-mail: iain@peacockvisualarts.co.uk www.make-aberdeen.com

Mintlaw. Home to the Russell clan for almost 200 years,

At the easternmost tip of mainland Scotland lies Peterhead - Aberdeenshire’s most populous town and one with a past that is inextricably linked to the waters that it overlooks. But just a few miles inland, the towns and villages of Central Buchan owe their beginnings not to the water, but to the land. With the village of Mintlaw at its core, this region was initially referred to as the Barony of Aden in writings dating back to the 12th century. For hundreds of years, a handful of wealthy lairds maintained their claim on Aden, leading opulent lifestyles with the help of teams

of workers who were brought in to farm their lands and generally look after their every whim. It was a life of privilege, but one that was eventually relegated to the history books when the farming industry became overwhelmed by increasing financial difficulties.

Aden Country Park provides a glimpse into the lives of these once powerful landowners while concurrently offering a great day out for the whole family. The park centres on the striking curved home farm building, which houses the award-winning Aberdeenshire Farming Museum. Here, you will be invited back in time to explore the evolution of farming in the North-east and to ‘meet’ the staff that made the estate what it was for so many years. Further into the estate you will discover walking and cycling trails, a Victorian arboretum, secret gardens, play and picnic areas, a dog agility course, gift shop, restaurant, a lake and even a bridleway for horses.

Fortunately, in the mid-1970s the Council stepped in to preserve a bit of that history in the form of Aden

With everything that is on offer, you may be best to book in to the Aden campsite and give this charming country park the time it deserves.

THE LAST WORD

WORDS BY PETER MITCHELL

You need a head for heights and a bit of nerve to visit Professor Rita Marcella (pronounced Mar-sella) in her sixth-floor eyrie at Aberdeen Business School on the Garthdee campus of the Robert Gordon University. For why? Well, to access her office in the building designed by the great British architect Norman Foster, you have to cross what her PA Joanne Lancaster playfully calls the Scary Bridge. This is a link corridor with just glass everywhere and a view of a sheer drop on either side. Avoid if you have vertigo!

Peter Mitchell became a valued Trend columnist nearly six years ago after 37 years on the Press and Journal, latterly as a Diary writer. For Trend, he has interviewed lots of prominent people including TV’s Angela Rippon. He is also much in demand as an amusing MC and after-dinner speaker.

I just looked straight ahead and found myself welcomed warmly by Rita who is not at all scary and very down to earth, no doubt thanks to her upbringing in Peterhead. That’s where dad Bill Lawrie ran a fruit and veg business and mum Peggy had a clothes shop called Flair Fashions. ‘I used to love going off with my mum on her trips to Glasgow and London to order stock as well as helping dad,’ said Rita who went on to take an honours degree in English Literature at Aberdeen University and later a Masters. She worked for Occidental before deciding that lecturing was the career for her. Along the way, Rita and her husband of 37 years, Philip have raised two children, Richard and

Madeleine, now in their late 20s, and have four grandchildren. ‘It’s a big year for us here,’ said Scotland’s first female business school dean, a post she has held for 12 years and before which she was head of the school of information studies at Northumbria University. ‘Aberdeen Business School was established 50 years ago in King Street with just a few students but we now have 5,000 students from all over the world studying a huge variety of disciplines and many of them in masters programmes’, she added. Take your pick, for example, from studies in oil and gas, the food and drink industry, tourism, accountancy, retail and fashion, applied law and journalism. Rita is also proud of the school’s ranking in the top five in the UK for getting graduates employment, a key element in the school’s strategy. ‘That has always been an important focus for us,’ she said, looking ahead to many and varied functions for the half century celebrations, including conferences, an alumni reunion and a ball in May. Then it was time for me to leave and cross the Scary Bridge again. Ouch!
