TEAM WELCOME

The crocuses and daffodils are out and the new season is well and truly upon us, even if there does appear to be a slight blizzard outside as we put this issue of Trend to bed. It’s a time to branch out and try something or buy something new. We’ve braved the cold to find the best new looks, tried gymnastics, explored near and far, and brought it all together for this issue. We’ve even discovered the best new plants for North-east Gardens. Talking of gardens, the Trend Garden Party is fast becoming the recognised start of Aberdeen’s spring social season and all the tickets have already been sold. We’re really looking forward it and there’s been an awful lot of hat shopping going on. Don’t worry if you haven’t been fortunate enough to get tickets, because we have a wonderful programme of events lined up for the rest of the year with charity fashion shows, the Trend Weddings exhibition and Trend’s Life with Style Awards. There’s still time for you to nominate your own favourite business for the Trend Readers’ Award. If you know a heavenly hairdresser, a super sweet shop or a groovy gallery, turn to page 74-5 and let us know. Whatever the weather this spring, we’re here to help you get more out of life.

With everything from velvet manicures to glitter, crushed diamonds, magnetic metallics, gel polishes, shellac and art wraps, spring brings an increasing focus on the fingers, making well-groomed nails essential. We’ve rounded up a few of the latest products to give you a hand...

14

BEAUTY FEATURE

Start with a good base. JASON Purifying Tea Tree Nail Saver rehydrates and revitalises dry cuticles and brittle nails to help reduce breakage and keep nails strong. It’s available in Tesco Nutricentres and online at www.jasonnaturalcare.co.uk

Healthy looking nude nails were on show during Paris fashion week. If you’d like to try it for yourself, then try LCN’s Even Brighter polish which makes nails look naturally brighter and healthier thanks to an anti-yellow formulation and green tea extract for a perfect finish.

Colour specialist Jessica has a new collection with shades named after the women of the founder’s family. There are six new shades to choose from, but we particularly liked the old-school ruby shade of Alexis and Nadia in fluid silver.

If you haven’t got the time to apply seventeen different layers, then give Sally Hansen’s new Complete Salon Manicure a go. One bottle acts as base, colour, topcoat, nail strengthener and growth formula, saving time and effort.

LCN have a raft of new products for spring, including a polish which promises to help your nails grow. Magic Nail Growth Polish is a water gel polish with micro-encapsulated active ingredients including algae extract, stinging nettle, baobab and acacia extracts and Vitamins C and E to promote nail health.

If you’d rather dress up your nails for a special occasion, then try Sally Hansen’s new Salon Effects range. You just peel and stick the real varnish strips directly onto your nails, meaning you have no drying time and a very funky finish including animal prints. Grrr!

Feminine florals, pretty pastels and endless elegant pieces are hot off the catwalk and onto the high street. It’s time to let your wardrobe bloom with a variation of floral patterns. Fear not, according to Henry Holland there are no rules... so if you are feeling extra daring get clashing! Slightly too audacious? Then the ethereal look can be achieved by wearing lace, ruffles and silk. Collarless blouses are big this season, creating a softer, less corporate illusion. This trend takes a step back in time with flashes of 50s retro synched waists and 40s glamour.

> WORDS BY ALISON SHAW

Falling in love with the girl is easy, finding the ring to do her proud is the real challenge... For an engagement ring is the most personal symbol of a couple’s commitment and should be as beautiful and unique as the girl whose hand it adorns. So when Gayle Eynon and fiancé Blythe Majors started the search for the sparkler to seal their future together they knew it would be no ordinary quest. And they turned to the past for inspiration, ultimately linking three love stories in one to create a truly romantic piece with unrivalled provenance. Gayle had been left the engagement rings of both her grandmothers, Mary and Isabel, and came up with the idea of incorporating the gems and their history into a new ring. But she found it difficult to find a jeweller to make her dream become reality. Then she discovered Aubin Stewart of McCalls Jewellery in Aberdeen, a designer with vision and a love of 28

vintage. She understood the brief immediately and suggested designs based on an antique ring that Gayle adored on sight. Aubin produced drawings, followed by a wax model of the ring, created by McCalls in-house jeweller, that Gayle and Blythe approved before it was made up in 18ct white gold. The result is a very special piece. A scalloped design with a vintage French feel, it features the original, midcentury gems – a solitaire and two stones from a twist – enhanced by additional diamonds on the shoulders. The entire process took about five weeks, the final design eagerly awaited by Gayle. “It was definitely worth the wait to have something so unique, so personal and so beautiful. My parents are really proud of the fact that stones have been brought back to life and are living on.”

Garden of delights > WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

We’ve all admired immaculate lawns, wildflower-strewn meadows and sweeping vistas, but often our own gardens fail to live up to our aspirations. If your garden looks more top tip than tip-top, now’s the time to give it a bit of a spring makeover with some new plants, accessories and lighting. We ’ve even got £100 of National Garden Centre vouchers to get one lucky reader off to a great start. The vouchers are perfect for presents and can help make a garden into a really great outdoor living space. They can be bought and redeemed at over 2,000 garden centres around the UK or can be bought online at www.thevouchergarden.co.uk

We asked John Hiorns of Crocus.co.uk to suggest some new plants that would do well in the North East of Scotland. Here are his top choices for 2013...

Cupido

You’ll love the compact evergreen Camellia “Cupido”, which needs acid soil or can be grown in a container full of ericaceous soil. Pink buds form along the slender upright stems, turning into rose-flushed white flowers.

Dalmation Peaflocweh rs with a

Old fashioned ays popular new twist are alw ea ur rp and Digitalis pu is a peach h” ac Pe on ati “Dalm at’d look th ve glo coloured fox en or rd ga great in a cottage informal an to t igh he provide border.

Soft Caress

Another evergreen, Mahonia “Soft Caress” has ferny foliage without the spines normally found on mahonias. Cheerful bright yellow flowers are followed by blue berries in the autumn for prolonged interest.

Spring Pink Eternal Fragrance

If you’d like a slow-growing shrub, then consider Daphne × transatlantica Spring Pink Eternal Fragrance. It’ll flower from April to October and will need very little maintenance.

Whatever you decide to buy, why not bag yourself £100 of National Garden Gift Centre vouchers by entering at www.trendmagazine.co.uk and answering this question:

Laura, who also has a day job in private banking, combines the business with raising Sofia-Rose and her two big brothers. “To say I was excited about having a girl is an understatement! But it was so disappointing not to be able to buy the girly accessories I wanted.” Designed for babies and toddlers, the bows, hairclips and bands are a confection of lace, ribbon and flowers, fit for any little princess. Some are from the Goldelox range of baby hair accessories which have featured in Vogue. Others are handmade by Laura who also makes tutu dance bags, adorned with a frothy net skirt that little girls love so much, there is a waiting list WWW.SOFIAROSEBOWTIQUE.COM IMAGE CREDIT: MEGAN LORNIE

moving on to bigger and better things...

North-east recruitment specialist sees expansion plans come to fruition. Due to its continued growth, specialist recruitment agency Genesis Personnel has moved to bigger and better offices in Peterhead. The company has relocated to new spacious premises in the town, situated next door to their previous offices on Marischal Street, to allow for further expansion. The new office spans 270sq metres offering a generous work space for all 19 staff members. The additional office space has already enabled the company to recruit an additional two staff members. Else

Mills has joined the team as senior marine recruiter and Chelcie Grant as the receptionist/administrator. The company takes great pride in providing staff and visitors with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The new offices have been completely refurbished and fitted with contemporary furniture and first class facilities. The office also has disabled access for visitors, including a stair lift. The new office boasts a large boardroom, which can be used to accommodate up to 30 delegates. This is a fantastic facility and can be hired by our clients for meetings or training. Candidates can keep-up-to-date with all the latest jobs on offer via the interactive TV screen in the window, which is constantly updated to show all the latest vacancies.

Managing director Wendy Marr said: “Genesis Personnel strives to offer its staff a great work environment and we feel the new offices at Marschial Street are first-class.

“The offices are bright and spacious, and well received by staff who are delighted. It’s been a real boost to morale” The company has plans to extend the existing Aberdeen office at Waterloo Quay by the end of 2013. Girls lunch at

Granite Park > WORDS BY GILL BUYERS

Arriving with plenty of time for a leisurely lunch with the girls, we were greeted by an attractive and friendly waitress who showed us to our window table. Despite the conditions outside the restaurant was warm and welcoming, and we relaxed with a pre-lunch Prosecco in the elegant surroundings while perusing the menu. The menu has a nice selection of starters, main courses and desserts but we opted for mains only, choosing between the Smoked Haddock Rarebit, Mascarpone and Herb Risotto and the Granite Park Open Burger was not easy but finally we made our choices, the table split between the 44

We had tickets for the matinee performance at HMT of The Full Monty on a very chilly Saturday, where to have a bite of lunch close by? We chose Granite Park, a hidden gem in the city’s Golden Square.

Rarebit and the Burger. The waitress who served us was very attentive throughout the lunch and helped us choose two wines to go along with our lunch, a cheeky Pinot Grigio and a slightly spicy Rioja both complimented the food perfectly and were very flavoursome. The Rarebit arrived and the presentation was impressive, with two large pieces of fish sitting on top of sautéed potatoes and wilted greens - a wonderful combination of flavours. The burger arrived on an open ciabatta roll, was topped with bacon and

cheese and accompanied by tomato relish and chunky chips...divine and just what was needed on a cold Saturday afternoon. The table next to us had desserts which looked very tempting but we opted for coffee only on this occasion, but vowed to return for the ‘Full Monty’ next time as we enjoyed this restaurant immensely. 8 Golden Square Aberdeen AB10 1RB T: 01224 478004 www.granitepark.co.uk

FOOD REVIEW

> WORDS BY RAE PATIENCE

A visit to Meldrum House has always felt a little like visiting the home of a wealthy relative. It’s very familiar, and friendly staff make you feel completely at home which relaxes you from the minute you arrive. On a snow covered March afternoon the drive through landscaped grounds to the main house was magical, almost like the set of a British rom-com movie. We were greeted and shown through to the Drawing Room, where we sat in luxurious sofas in front of a roaring fire. There we perused the extensive lunch menu while enjoying a glass of the hotel’s recommended Cabernet Sauvignon. With such a variety of food on offer it was difficult to decide - it all sounded so delicious! Although tempted by the homemade Shepherd’s Pie and Crab Cakes we decided on the Meldrum House Steak Burger and the Club Sandwich – ultimate comfort food on a snowy afternoon. The soup special – a Haggis, Neeps & Tatties Vel oute was too intriguing not to try, so we ordered a bowl to share as a starter. The soup was simply delicious, the rich ‘haggis neeps and tatties’ flavours were complimented by the smooth and delicate texture. Our lunch arrived soon after

and we weren’t disappointed. The steak burger was topped with melted cheddar cheese and bacon and was served with a tower of Meldrum House’s chunky, hand cut chips and tangy, home-made relish. The club sandwich was equally impressive and was constructed of grilled chicken, omelette, bacon, baby leaves and tomato on toasted sourdough bread. With no room left for dessert, despite being tempted by the Chocolate Fondant Caramel Ice Cream, we finished up with a drink by the fire. Mr P. deliberated over the extensive Whisky menu, but as we were in the home of one of Scotland’s oldest distilleries it felt only right to have the 12 year old Glen Garioch. A perfect way to end a fabulous eating experience at Meldrum House. Oldmeldrum Aberdeenshire AB51 0AE T: 01651 872294 www.meldrumhouse.com 45

CHEF FOCUS

What made you decide to be a chef? I’ve always been passionate about good food. As an Italian, food is very much part of our culture, with mealtimes being a chance for the whole family to spend some time together. My initial influence came from my home where my mother would teach me about using ingredients. She inspired me and I later qualified at one of the top catering colleges in Italy. Describe your cooking style I’d say that my dishes are modern Mediterranean cooking. I make food that is always fresh, healthy and tasty!

Born in Naples where pizza was invented, on a bay where the clear blue waters teem with fish and crustaceans, it’s no wonder that Ciao Napoli’s Peppe Lepre, grew up to be a chef. 50

If you invited a famous person to dinner, who would it be, why and what would you eat? Sophia Loren, who is also from Naples, would be a fantastic guest. She once said that she owed everything she had to spaghetti. As well as being beautiful and glamorous, she has such exquisite taste, so for her I would cook absolutely anything she wanted!

Where do you look for inspiration for ideas? I am always creating new ideas from traditional recipes. Food and people’s tastes are always evolving and changing, and I love to experiment with new ideas and ingredients. My wife and daughter are often the first to try a new dish. Our son’s only nine months old, so he’s a still bit too young to help. What is the worst thing about modern restaurant cooking? I know when I go out to eat I’m sometimes

disappointed by small portions and high prices! What do you think about the Aberdeen restaurant scene? How has it evolved in the past few years? It has changed a lot in recent years, and while competition is good for business, I believe there are too many food chains offering a very similar type of food that isn’t freshly prepared or original. Good food should be a celebration of the best seasonal produce, not something massproduced and microwaved.

Relax and enjoy high quality cuisine and great service in the friendly Italian ambience at Ciao Napoli. Serving a wonderful combination of both modern and classic Italian dishes, the broad menu offers something irresistible for everyone.

There is no such thing as ordinary at Ciao Napoli. Our restaurant brings only the finest quality seasonal ingredients to the table with everything freshly prepared and made on the premises by our chefs, complemented by our specially selected fine Italian and Neapolitan wines with daily specials, the true Italian cooking is consistently second to none.

Making perfect use of our 2 floors our private dining facilities downstairs are the perfect setting for corporate or special events, suitable for up to 60 people and you can select from our main menu which can also be tailored to suit your requirements.

Here’s Pepe’s recipe for Chargrilled tuna steak with balsamic vinegar glaze for two 2 tuna steaks 160g each 1 lime 2 large potatoes Maldon salt, black pepper 100 ml of extra virgin olive oil

1 spring of fresh rosemary 2 tbs of balsamic vinegar glaze 100g Parmesan shavings 50g wild rocket 1 lemon

Marinate the tuna in the lime juice, some salt, pepper, 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and the rosemary. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Peel the potatoes, slice in round shapes and par cook, drain and cool under cold water. Saute the potatoes in a hot pan with some of the oil, salt and pepper. In the meantime, heat up a char-grill pan or frying pan Place the tuna in the hot pan and cook for approximately 1 minute each side, depending on the thickness of the steak. The tuna should be served pink in the middle. Drizzle the plate with the balsamic glaze, place the potatoes on the plate, slice the tuna steak and place on top of the potatoes, topped with wild rocket, parmesan shavings, lemon wedges and drizzle over the remaining olive oil.

More than just a golf course

With glorious views from the hills to the sea, Craibstone Golf Course is a stunning setting for a round, whatever the season.

Strolling the 9th to 18th holes, nestled between Elrick and Brimmond Hills, it’s hard to believe this rural green gem is just on Aberdeen’s doorstep. But more and more people are discovering it’s the ideal escape from the city – for a whole range of reasons, from walking to cycling, celebrating a special occasion or simply catching up over a coffee in the tranquil atmosphere of its Brimmond Bistro. For Craibstone is about so much more than just golf. Now celebrating two years under the ownership of Marshall Leisure, the Bucksburn venue is open daily to the public and welcomes visitors including corporate clients, community groups and those who just enjoy getting out into the surrounding countryside. The social hub is the Brimmond Bistro, which looks out onto the hill from which it takes its name. Cyclists and walkers out on the trails of Brimmond and Tyrebagger hills can take a breather at the bistro where the home-cooked dishes include: an all-day

breakfast with locally-sourced bacon and bangers; snacks of soup, sandwiches, paninis and wraps; coffees and cakes plus main meals such as, Tomasz, the resident chef’s signature Brimmond burger and traditional mince and skirlie. With wall-to-wall windows on two sides, it’s the perfect spot to drink in the views and enjoy a leisurely Sunday roast or supper on a summer evening. “We really enjoy welcoming a whole range of people here,” says Agnes Marshall, who oversees the bistro. “It’s a great place to pop into for coffee but we host everything – birthdays, anniversaries, charity and corporate events. “We really are no ordinary course.”

THE INS AND OUTS of

> WORDS BY COURTNEY O’GRADY

In 1308, King Robert the Bruce declared Inverurie a Royal Burgh. Since that time, it has continued to go from strength to strength. Though the Inverurie we see today is a modern market town with all the amenities, this is a town steeped in history, the signs of which can still be seen all around if you know where to look. From the War Memorial in the centre of town to the monument commemorating the Battle of Harlaw, there are reminders everywhere that this town sacrificed a lot on its way to becoming what it is today. Inverurie owes much of its early success to its link with Aberdeen via the Aberdeen Canal and later via the Great North of Scotland Railway. The introduction of trains in 1854 made Inverurie a strategically important junction for many intersecting branch lines and it even boasted its own locomotive works, a source of such pride that the local football club is named in its honour. Ultimately, though, Inverurie owes its current success to the one thing that it gained when the oil boom came to the North Sea – people. With over ten thousand residents, retailers and businesses have flocked to Inverurie and the result is a town that offers everything from formalwear to football boots and all that comes in between. 60

Star of Johnshaven > WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

With its tiny harbour, picturesque cottages and annual Fish Festival, there are plenty of reasons to while away a pleasant afternoon in Johnshaven, but one of the most compelling is Starfish Studio, the creative home of textile artist, painter and passionate supporter of British crafts, Kate MacKenzie. She shared her creative approach with us...

lots of hand stitching to create trees, fences, sheep etc. I’ve also recently started weaving on a small hand frame, and found this an incredibly enjoyable way of working.

“I’ve always loved sewing, especially hand sewing, and many years ago I set up my own small company designing cross stitch kits. I was limited in my ability to promote them as I was working full time as a primary teacher. I gave up my career in 1997 when my first daughter was born, and the family moved to Johnshaven almost a decade ago, when my husband and I bought the village shop. We were warmly welcomed by the villagers and it’s now hard to imagine ever living anywhere else. A few years ago, we bought the building next to our house which meant I could turn my long-cherished dream of opening my own shop selling British made, affordable art and craft, and having a permanent outlet for my own work,” Kate enthused. “I have no formal training, but have had a love of textiles from a very young age. My gran was a seamstress, and she always encouraged and helped me to make things from her enormous scraps box. “I get bored easily so I like to use a variety of techniques and styles. My work is mostly abstract, although I do enjoy creating small landscapes by combining textiles, paint and adding

need for this. I wanted to showcase the very best in affordable British crafts, so my shop is a treasure trove for lovers of quality handmade goods. We stock ceramics, wood, textiles, jewellery, glass, cards, candles, cushions, scarves and much more. The price range is £1 - £150, with the vast majority of items retailing below £30. As well as working with textiles, Kate is a talented painter. “I work in bright acrylics, often using buildings as a focal point. I’m fascinated by history, and have a real love for castles which is why they feature prominently in my work. I’m always happy to discuss painting or textile commissions.

“Johnshaven certainly has a large number of creative people, many of whom participate in North East Open Studios. I guess it’s the peace and quiet and the inspiration provided by the constantly changing sea. Sometimes it’s hard not to be distracted by the beautiful view of the sea from my sewing room!

“I meet a lot of customers who are inspired by what they see in the shop. I’d urge anyone who has always fancied trying a new skill to ‘give it a go’ - what have you got to lose?”

“Starfish Studio was a dream of mine for at least fifteen years before it became reality. Too many ‘craft’ shops are full of overpriced imported tat, and with so many talented designer makers in Britain there really is no

I

t was family that first lured me to Cambridge in 2007 but since discovering this vibrant and cultured city, it has become a regular destination in our annual family calendar. With so much on offer, you really can keep going back and never run out of things to do.

From Aberdeen, you can travel to Cambridge by car or train without too much hassle but if you’re looking for a weekend break and can’t afford the time, flying into London and driving the painless 60 miles up the M11 means you are door to door in just a few hours. There are enough hotels to suit every taste and every budget but this city will keep you so busy, you will only need your hotel for sleeping anyway. If shopping is your sport, Cambridge will keep you active whether you’re looking for Primark or Prada. The Grand Arcade is the city’s newest and grandest shopping centre, with all the names you know and love under one roof. But for a truly unique shopping experience, you must save a day for Burwash Manor, where you will find a collection of independently owned shops and cafés housed within a range of converted farm buildings and offering everything from children’s clothing to organic produce. If you are more of a culture vulture, Cambridge will not disappoint. There are galleries and museums showcasing the full spectrum of art styles and because the people of Cambridge have a penchant for the performing arts, you can fill your evenings watching interpretive dance, ABBA cover bands or Shakespeare or anything in between. If London’s West End is still the only theatre for you, it is worth noting that you can reach London in under an hour on the direct train. However you choose to fill your time in Cambridge, you mustn’t leave without partaking in this historic city’s most famous pastime – punting down the River Cam. Introduced in the early 1900s, punting involves standing rather precariously in a flat-bottomed boat attempting to navigate the river with nothing more than an unwieldy and exceptionally long pole. Once you realise you are not going to tip, it is actually great fun and a fantastic way to take in some of the spectacular architecture that Cambridge has on offer.

If you are looking for a great weekend away, Cambridge is an exciting destination with the bustle of London but without the crush of human traffic. 67

Turn up the volume... > WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

Forget your iPod and stow away your tablet, because vinyl is making a serious comeback. Sales of records are soaring as more people discover the richness of analogue sound. Many artists release their latest work on vinyl, so now’s the time to dust off those old records and rediscover the joy of the LP. Modern turntables are precision-engineered pieces of kit, with prices from a couple of hundred pounds for a decent entry-level machine, to topend set ups costing rather more than some flats on ASPC! There’s a market for vintage machines as well as pre-owned records. Many records also include codes for digital downloads - giving fans the best of both worlds. At around £20 for a new album, vinyl is pricier, but then silk costs more than polyester. Locally, check out Holburn Hi-Fi for informed advice, a good selection and the expertise to refurbish vintage turntables. There are plenty of online suppliers, but this is one purchase where you need to hear what you’re buying. The Cavern on Belmont Street is Aberdeen’s best option for vinyl. Pro-Ject offer great entry-level design-led machines, which both look and sound great. The depth and richness of the sound compared to a CD or MP3 is genuinely astounding.

Scotland’s own Linn Audio has long been recognised as producing outstanding record decks for the serious audiophile. Linn’s David Williamson explained, “High quality engineering will ensure that you are extracting the maximum amount of information from the grooves of the record. There is an obvious difference in audio quality, but we encourage the customer to make their own decision, based on listening to the products. With a Linn system that includes one of our DSM products, you can even Songcast your records all around the home”.

HISTORY

> WORDS BY COURTNEY O’GRADY

To reach Huntly Castle, you must first pass under the imposing arch of the Simpson Building, which is a Jacobean construction so much a part of days gone by, it immediately transports you to another place and time. As you carry on further

down the tranquil tree-lined avenue, Huntly Castle comes into view and you can almost feel the rumblings from this striking ruin of a past so tumultuous, it captures the imagination of historians and architects alike.

76

Starting its life as a wooden structure built by the Earl of Fife in the late 1100s, Huntly Castle was originally known as the Peel of Strathbogie. In the years that followed, the site became a stronghold for the Gordon family whose influence and opulence was so coveted the Castle was alternately burned down, knocked down and blown up by people as powerful as Mary Queen of Scots. Each time, the reaction from the Gordon family was to build an even more elaborate and lavish home, resulting ultimately in a great palace, the only thing left standing today. Built in a prominent, elevated position and surrounded by a battalion of trees, Huntly Castle brings new meaning to the phrase ‘if the walls could speak.’ These walls virtually shout out, with the names and titles of inhabitants long gone, carved high on the palace wall and an elaborate frontispiece over the main entrance displaying symbols of all that was important to them – from family, to King, to God.

The interior is but a shadow of its former greatness, but what remains tells the story of a family so powerful, even James VI felt threatened by them. From the intricately carved mantelpieces to the graffiti in the prison pit, it is a struggle to imagine what it was like to call this architectural triumph your home. But it sure is fun to try.

Huntly Castle is open to visitors all year round. www.historic-scotland.gov.uk T: 01466 793 191

Like a lot of girls her age, my daughter spent a large part of the past summer rearranging the furniture in our sitting room to create a makeshift London 2012 gymnastics arena in which she could perform Beth Tweddle-esque routines in front of an imaginary panel of judges. Ultimately though, curtain poles and coffee tables are just no substitute for uneven bars and balance beams. That’s when you want to give Garioch Gymnastics a call. Based in the Inverurie Community Centre, Garioch Gymnastics offers something for youngsters of all ambitions and abilities. For those just starting out, recreational classes provide a relaxed environment in which fun plays as important a role as sport. For those hoping to leap their way to Nadia Comneci heights, you need look no further than Garioch’s consistently impressive competition results to know

that they boast some of the finest coaches that Scotland has to offer. And for all the boys and girls who just want one chance to act out their Olympic dreams on proper gymnastic equipment

rather than sitting room furniture, Garioch now offers gymnastic birthday parties. With access to the full gamut of gymnastics apparatus as well as a minimum of two coaches, your budding birthday gymnast and all of their closest friends can now spend their special day bounding across beams, leaping over low

bars and finding their rhythm through a floor routine. With an hour of activity as vigorous as that, the only downside is that you may need two birthday cakes to satisfy the ravenous party-goers. In an age where children’s heroes are increasingly of the virtual variety, it is a relief to know that groups like Garioch Gymnastics still offer kids the chance to emulate their heroes in a way that benefits their bodies as well as their minds. For that, they deserve a gold medal. Contact Fiona on 01467 628283 fiona.murray@aberdeenshire.gov.uk

Wanderlust > WORDS BY COURTNEY O’GRADY

We have finally broken free from the icy grip of a long, dark winter. Time now to trade in our jumpers and boots for shorts and sandals and, most importantly, to decide which exotic destination we will choose to help shake off the last remaining cobwebs. To get your itinerary started, a visit to Waterstone’s is highly recommended. We spent some time recently in the Travel Writing section, and can highly recommend the following…

Around India in 80 Trains by Monisha Rajesh This book is the antithesis of your average travel guide, which is what makes it such an enjoyable read. A witty chronicle of the author’s 40,000km journey across India on the intricate Indian Railway system, this book gives you a real flavour for the country, its people, and the oldest, most romantic means of travel. Even if you’re not planning a visit to India, this book is a great ride.

Twitchhiker by Paul Smith This book is so far from the norm, it is off the scale. Twitchhiker follows the harebrained journey of a man determined to travel from Newcastle to a small island near New Zealand in thirty days using nothing but the kindness of followers on Twitter. Smith sets himself five rules that must followed throughout, the final one being that he must give up if he is unable to move on from a location within 48 hours. Madcap doesn’t even begin to describe the adventure that follows. It is unlikely that anyone will use this as a handbook on travel, but it is a very funny read that leaves you feeling comforted that people this frivolous do exist.

Three Things You Need To Know About Rockets by Jessica Fox This book is part memoir, part travel log. Jessica Fox was a 26-year old filmmaker living in Hollywood who decided one day to give everything up and follow her dreams – to Scotland. She soon finds herself living in a bookshop in Wigtown, Scotland’s self-declared haven for book lovers. At the heart of this book is Jessica’s story, which involves all of the excitement, heartbreak and even romance that the search for a new life can bring. But its real appeal is that it reawakens in all of us the wanderlust that is too often stifled by dayto-day life. I dare you to read this book and not pack your bags.

Down Under by Bill Bryson If you’re not familiar with Bill Bryson, his writing style is wry but beneath the humour lies an abundance of information that can only come from a man who has a genuine passion for his subject. In Down Under, Bryson explores Australia and covers everything from why Aussies are so laid back to why the local plant life is trying to kill him. Bryson’s unique perspective on this vast country is so inviting, you will have no choice but to book your ticket to Oz.

THE LAST WORD

THE LAST WORD... GOLDEN BOY TIM RULES THE WAVES > WORDS BY PETER MITCHELL

The lunchtime crowd at the John Lewis Espresso Bar in Aberdeen could not believe their eyes. Here was Westhill’s very own Olympian Tim Baillie holding up his gold medal in an exclusive photo for Trend readers. Customers wanted to touch it and all were amazed at just how heavy it was. Tim Baillie? Yes, he is not exactly a household name but he should be, because he and his canoe slalom partner Etienne Stott, now entering their ninth season in the C2 class, defied the odds to triumph in front of 12,000 spectators at the Lee Valley White Water Centre last August. “We had got our place in the final as the sixth and last qualifiers which meant we went off first in that final,” said Tim. “Slovakian twins Pavel and Peter Hochschorner, who are like rock stars in their country, were hot favourites to retain their title but the time we set was never bettered and they had

to settle for bronze behind another British pair, David Florence and Richard Hounslow.” Tim and Etienne, who gets his name from his French-Canadian mother, were bitterly disappointed to miss out on qualifying for the Beijing Olympics. “That acted as a tremendous spur for us for all the training we did at Holme Pierrepoint National Watersports Centre near Nottingham,” said Tim, whose mum and dad Christine and Ken, met at Aberdeen University Canoe Club. The former Westhill Academy pupil, who turns 34 on 11 May, has enjoyed

Lottery funding and also support from an old school pal, Andrew Strachan of Norse Ltd, but what does the future hold for Nottingham-based Tim, who also has a degree in mechanical engineering? “Etienne and I are back in training for the world championships in Prague in September,” he said. “Thereafter, who knows?” Tim’s Canadian girlfriend, Sarah Boudens, who is an Olympic kayaker, will no doubt have a big say in deciding what they do but for sure he will always cherish August 2, 2012, and the MBE that followed that golden day. 89

The Spa at Gleneagles

Scotland’s ultimate feel good destination The lush 850 acre Gleneagles estate nestled in the gently rolling Perthshire hills may be home to one of the world’s most famous golf courses, but we think the best thing about Gleneagles lies indoors! The Spa at Gleneagles by ESPA not only offers some of the most luxurious and indulgent health and beauty treatments on the planet, but a brilliant range of alternative therapies offers deep relaxation, health benefits and enhanced wellbeing. Just a couple of hours from Aberdeen, with great road links and a train station virtually on the doorstep, the Spa at Gleneagles is perfect for a day spa or a short pampering break to help you recharge your batteries and start feeling and looking great again. Each of the Spa’s range of outstanding treatment packages also provides access to the Spa’s world-class facilities. Try the crystal steam rooms, the vitality pools and massaging fountains, relax in the courtyard garden or chill – quite literally – in the arctic mist showers or the ice baths. The Spa at Gleneagles offers a collection of wellness packages which help you tackle problems like stress, weight control, hormonal issues or lack of sleep. Both men and women can benefit from an individual programme of consultations and treatments drawn from both the traditional spa treatment menu as well as wellness treatments such as nutrition, acupuncture, osteopathy, naturopathy, personal training, massage and colon hydrotherapy.

SEASONAL KICK START PACKAGE

It’s worth checking the website for special day spa packages which offer a perfect introduction to the facilities at great value. If you’re feeling sluggish and bloated after the winter then opt for the Seasonal Kick Start package. This invigorating day costs just £99 per person and includes either a TRX session or outdoor jogging trail experience with a personal trainer, a 55min targeted body massage and full use of the beautiful heat and thermal experiences.

SERENITY DAY PACKAGE

If you’re more in need of de-stressing, opt for the Serenity Day package at £120 per person. Unwind in the crystal steam room and indulge yourself in the pool as the calming waters restore your equilibrium. Enjoy a two course spa menu lunch, followed by an eighty minute spa treatment of your choice that’ll leave you relaxed from head to toe. You’ll even take home a retail voucher worth £30 that you can redeem on the ESPA website.

BEACH BARE PACKAGE

Our third choice is one many of us could use at this time of year. Getting ready for the beach can be a nightmare, but the Spa at Gleneagles has it covered with their Beach Bare package for £160 per person. This intensive head to toe package starts with a full body salt and oil exfoliation, followed by their Active Abdominal detox and a targeted neck, back and shoulder massage. Have a break for lunch at Deseo, the Spa’s cafe and then spend the rest of the day unwinding in the Spa’s beautiful thermal and relaxation experiences.

Of course, there’s more to Gleneagles than just a brilliant spa. On-site activities include horse riding, archery, air-rifle, clay shooting, off-road driving, falconry, gun dogs and fishing. There are 4 restaurants in the hotel including the award-laden two Michelin starred Restaurant Andrew Fairlie.

Some people even go there to golf! The Gleneagles Hotel® T: 01764 694332 |
