THE HOUSE SPA

Smoky eyes

> WORDS BY FIONA SMITH

“How do you do smoky eyes?!” It’s one of the most frequently asked questions…and it’s actually not as hard to achieve as you think! Here’s how. Prep the eyelid with a good eyeshadow base. Apply kohl pencil as close to the eyelashes as possible, top and bottom, including the inner rim for a really intense look. Don’t worry about the eyeliner being too neat at this stage - just get it roughly symmetrical. Next - blend! Good blending is the key to smoky sophistication. Start with a grey or brown, and smudge over the eyeliner. This instantly softens the look, evens out any kinks in the liner, and the smoky effect starts to take shape.

From here, start to build up the intensity by adding a darker shade of the colour you started with, or go for it with a black! Remember, a little goes a long way and you probably don’t need as much product as you think.

These days, trying to strike a work/life balance is very difficult - stressful lifestyles and careers take their toll on us, and so finding time to relax and unwind is ultimately very important for our physical and mental wellbeing. Spa Day packages from The House could be the answer!

Shade from the outer corner in an upward motion, into the socket line. This ensures the eye stays looking open and awake, and stops the eye from shrinking. For an ultra glam, sharp finish, apply a liquid liner across the top of the eyelashes and add a pair of false lashes. Just a couple of lashes on the outside corners is all it takes. Complete your look with lashings of mascara - even with false lashes on, the mascara pulls the whole thing together, ready for any occasion!

Spa Day at The House > WORDS BY GILL BUYERS

The House 34 Great Western Road, Aberdeen AB10 6PY Tel: 01224 586699 www.thehousespa.co.uk 10

The House offer different Spa packages which can be tailored to fit your needs. A full and a half spa day are available, with prices ranging from £75 to £125 - perfect for gifts. Included in all the packages is unlimited use of their two steam rooms, the Hammana and the Aroma, the Rock sauna room and the Hydro and massage pool. Relaxation in the member’s lounge and lunch from an extensive menu is also included. Their policy of having a maximum of 10 people on a Spa day provides the tranquillity you would expect from such an exclusive venue. Fluffy bathrobes were produced, and a relaxing coffee in the member’s lounge helped us to unwind before being whisked away to one of the newlydecorated treatment rooms. I had the E’SPA Salt and Body Scrub, followed by an Aromatherapy massage, and Sarah was treated to the Express facial and the neck and shoulder massage. Our treatments were fully explained to us and carried out with the utmost professionalism by the friendly, well-trained therapists. After lunch, we were given time to enjoy the Spa area before our manicures and pedicures. Eventually we had to leave, as normality beckoned, but we felt refreshed and content and would thoroughly recommend this little haven to anyone looking for a day of decadence and escapism. 11

Thon Po Massage

Releasing the Thai that binds > WORDS BY SARAH WATTIE

Thon Po is a new Thai massage sanctuary located on Thistle Street, in the heart of the city centre. It is a new venture not seen before in Aberdeen, but is one that is bound to be a huge success. Thai massage and reflexology are on offer: both treatments can be for 30 minutes or an hour, and are reasonable priced at £20 or £40. Thai massage releases tension, boosts vitality and generates wholeness of mind, and although this appears on the surface to be something that will send you to sleep, these massages are not for the faint-hearted. When entering this haven of tranquillity, visitors receive a very warm welcome and are given loose Oriental pyjamas (which should definitely be put on everyone’s Christmas wish list!) to relax in while enjoying the experience. The lay-out is very traditional, with the three treatment beds positioned next to one another, and separated only by sheer curtains. Both therapies begin with a slightly ticklish but enjoyable foot bath before the relaxing and stretching begins. The massage involves a lot of kneading and stretching, and your body will be put in positions never before thought possible. Although very 12

enjoyable, and with the promise of aiding a more restful sleep, moments of the massage may cause your toes to curl. If a Thai massage doesn’t appeal, then the reflexology is not to be missed. It works the entire body by touching certain points of the feet, and leaves you feeling refreshed and pampered.

How to look gymnastic fantastic > WORDS BY LAURA SARKIS

Everyone wants to look and feel great come festive function time – buying dresses, maxing out on accessories and splashing out on haircuts and beauty treats. Instead of focusing on the ‘wrapping paper’, why not pay more attention to the gift inside? Invest in the contents - i.e. YOU – and the benefits will pay off all year long, and not just at the office Christmas party! Start your weekly workouts now and with three months of consistent progress, you won’t need the new dress/fake tan/magic pants! here are my top three tips for fitness success: 1. use weights – get a competent trainer to show you some basic dumbbell moves for your chest, back, shoulders and legs. Done correctly, you will tone without bulking up and your body will burn more calories at rest than a purely cardio slimmed physique. 2. improve your posture – standing tall, shoulders back, chest out and tummy in, is an instant fix which is free and painless! Core exercises such as the floor cobra, plank and press-ups aren’t quite so painless, but will strengthen those essential postural muscles to maintain your confident stance. No pain, no gain… 3. Be determined – two weeks of crazed activity followed by two weeks of nothing is pointless and is more likely to result in injury. Keep at it, cut down on the alcohol and be honest about your diet. Make the lifestyle changes now to keep not just your dress size, but your health and vitality for life on track 365 days a year. David Lloyd Leisure, Garthdee Road, Aberdeen AB10 7AY. Recruitment leader launches new HR Division > INTERVIEW BY NIKI TENNANT

Leading recruitment agency, PI Recruitment, has strengthened its foothold on the Aberdeen marketplace by establishing a specialist service focusing on HR professionals. Operations director, Kim Barrie, heads the new division, which will place senior HR professionals in in-house positions in the UK and internationally. “The HR side of the recruitment business is highly confidential, and it’s not unusual for the client to turn into the candidate,” explained Kim, who has spent the last six months researching the specialist area in preparation for the launch of the new division.

“The formation of this specialist offering is in response to a gap in the market and increasing client demand. Coupled with our high level of expertise in the vertical markets of finance and accounting, technical and engineering and commercial support, this HR specialist service makes PI Recruitment a onestop shop for clients.” PI Recruitment director and shareholder, Debbie Mcfarlane, will drive the growth of the new recruitment division in the US following her recent relocation to Houston. Your name and job title? Christian Recomio, executive chef at Fusion Bar and Bistro in North Silver Street, Aberdeen. Who are your fantasy dinner party guests? American writer Hunter S. Thompson, food writer Anthony Bourdain and acclaimed chef Ferran Adria. My fantasy almost came true, as Adria came into the restaurant just after we opened. He was in Aberdeen to receive an honorary degree from the university and I got to cook for him, which was amazing. What are your top three desert island ingredients? I couldn’t live without foie gras, brioche and Tanqueray No.10 gin. What is your food heaven and your food hell? I love eating tapas on the beach in Barcelona. I’ve been to the city seven times in the past two years and it is a big influence. Could happily live without McDonald’s. Which dish says ‘home’ to you? My dad is Mexican and my mum is from Aberdeen, so my family has a diverse approach to food, but the smell of a barbecue always makes me think of home. What’s always in your fridge at home? I don’t have a lot of time to eat as I’m always on the go. I have a lot of fruit at home, so I can always grab something on the way out.

26

Go on…share with us your secret junk food indulgence. Kinder eggs - but that’s more to do with the toy… Who has been your biggest inspiration? Ferran Adria - he is regarded as the best chef in the world. I worked for Paco Guzman in Barcelona last year, which was great, and I’ve also learned a lot from my mum as she has been in the catering industry for 30 years. What three words would your kitchen colleagues use to describe you? Creative, strong and - as a term of affection - they call me champ! Dinner Review: Situated on busy Guild Street with the harbour in its sights, is the granite Soprano St. Magnus Court Hotel.

Lunch Review: Café Boheme Restaurant Unable to recall when I last dined in a French restaurant outside of France, Café Boheme on Windmill Brae has been on my ‘must visit’ list for a while. The split-level wood panelled restaurant has bags of character. This being lunch time, I had planned to be restrained and opt for the express lunch menu, but willpower went out of the window when faced with the reasonably-priced Table D’Hote menu. (£9.95 1 course/ £12.95 2 courses/£14.95 3 courses.) As usual I couldn’t make up my mind, but I was helped by our attentive waiter who described the two dishes I favoured – the ‘plat du jour’ (wood pigeon wrapped

in pancetta), or slow-cooked rolled belly pork stuffed with sundried tomato and paprika tapenade, fennel puree and cider jus. The pork eventually won, and was tender and flavoursome. I began with a bowl of steamed mussels in a parsley, white wine and shallot jus; the rustic bread alongside was ideal for dipping. My husband had chosen from the daily fish specials – an intense, yet not too rich local crab soup (£6.95) and some beautifully plump seared scallops, with green tea noodles (£18.95). The wine list has a good selection of French wines, and wines to keep New World drinkers happy too. A few were available by the glass, and I enjoyed a soft, dark berry-fruited Cotes du Duras from South West France.

The wine bar and bistro combine a contemporary feel and relaxed atmosphere.

Although we didn’t indulge in desserts, the ones which arrived at the next table looked very inviting. We concluded with a coffee, and departed relaxed. I look forward to returning to Café Boheme for another taste of France soon. Café Boheme, 23 Windmill Brae, Aberdeen AB11 6HU Tel: 01224 210677 www.cafebohemerestaurant.co.uk

We were warmly welcomed, and very decent bread and olives swiftly arrived. The wine list is a mix of old and new world, and as there is a good selection by the glass, a refreshing and fruity glass of Prosecco seemed like a great idea. The menu offers all-day dining with filled ciabattas, soup and specials. There’s also a choice of tapas platters which are ideal for sharing, packed with Spanish and Italian salami, and hams, grilled veggies, olives and an eclectic range of cheese. £6.50. Initially, it was the promise of homemade chips (and very good they were too!) that

drew me to the sirloin steak. Cooked medium as requested, it sat atop an abundant sauté of wild mushrooms with vine roasted tomatoes, and had its own jug of a fiery peppercorn sauce (£12.95). It was well put together, classic bistro fare and sat nicely against a glass of structure, berry-fruited Sicilian Nero D’Avola. My other half chose a generous and flavoursome bowl of linguini with chicken and pesto sauce (£8.50). The children were happy with their stone-baked pizza (£7.50), topped according to their strict specifications! We shared an amaretto and pear cheesecake, and helped the kids with their refreshing pear and lemon sorbets. Whether you fancy a glass of champagne on one of their plush bar stools, a lingering girlie lunch, a quick lunch-break from work or a relaxed supper, Sopranos ticks all the boxes. Here’s an update on New Orleans’ official cocktail. Pear is the new pomegranate in the cocktail world, with esteemed brands such as Absolut and Grey Goose launching pearflavoured variants. (Shameless plug: a traditional version of the Sazerac can be found on Snafu’s new cocktail menu.)

Pear Sazerac 25ml Buffalo Trace Bourbon 25ml Xante Pear Cognac 18.75ml La Fee Parisian absinthe 12.5ml Demerara sugar syrup Quarter of a Bartlett pear 3 dashes of Peychaud’s Bitters In a brandy glass, add the absinthe, some ice and top with water. Leave to chill. Muddle a quarter of a pear in a Boston glass, then add the bourbon, cognac, sugar syrup and bitters. Top with ice, add the steel tin and shake for 10 seconds. Discard the contents of the chilled brandy glass. Fine-strain the shaken mixture into the glass. Garnish with a thin pear slice. Adrian Gomes, General Manager, Snafu www.clubsnafu.com

Drink in pink At Trend we are in celebratory mood, which seems like a great excuse to try sparkling roses! As with still rose wine, there is now a great selection of bubbles to choose from. So if you would like to help us celebrate, then why not pop a cork on one of the following: Champagne Fleury Pere et Fils Rose de Saignee NV, M&S, 12.5%. £30.00 This small estate is situated in the Cote de Bar in the south East of the Champagne region. They have been following organic practices since 1970, and in 1992 converted to biodynamics. Delicate salmon pink with a fine mousse of tiny bubbles, this has enticing floral scents entwined with ripe summer berries and a hint of spice. It’s dry and elegant, with subtle red fruit and savoury notes. It would be delicious alone or with lobster!

• Locally sourced & supplied beef, lamb, pork & game • Fresh locally supplied fish • Organic vegetables • Free range chicken & turkey • Delicious pie selection

This year we have Christmas all wrapped up with an offering to suit any occasion...

Marques De Monistrol Gran Tradition Cava Brut Rose Vintage 2005. Co-op.£7.99 Every time I try a wine from this producer, it brings back memories of a bumpy vineyard tour in an ageing Alfa Romeo. A blend of Pinot Noir and the local Monstrell grape, it is rosepetal pink with persistent bubbles and a raspberries and cream fragrance. Just dry, it has a raspberry and redcurrant tang, and would be good alongside prawn canapés!

COCKTAIL

CHAS

ANDY GORDON @

Cocktailia…

J. BARBER & SON BUTCHERS Est.1963

Passionate about good quality produce and the best customer service.

The Food Story is the last word in ethical eating and prime local produce. Proprietor Anne-Marie Bain has drawn her inspiration for this Rose Street coffee shop from the culinary creations she sampled and appreciated during her world travels. Although she has successfully imported the best examples to her native Aberdeen, her admirable commitment to supporting local suppliers and promoting organic produce is the hallmark of the Food Story brand.

My BigBreak

ADVERTORIAL

Exactly a year ago, Morven MacSween’s feline features graced the front cover of the launch issue of Trend. Now, the Aberdeenshire schoolgirl is gliding along the catwalk to fame as one of the UK’s most promising young models. “When I was aged 14, my brother heard about the Elite Model Look competition and suggested I enter. That’s when my big break arrived,” recalls Morven from Newmachar.

Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs)

Alive & Kicking Nothing ventured?

Morven beat off competition from 16 other girls to claim the crown in the UK final of the prestigious contest. Although too young to obtain a deal with Elite Model Agency, they recognised her talent and referred her to London’s Premier Model Management, who offered her a contract.

There is always a lot of space devoted to talking about the possible ' tax reducing' options that are available to investors , among them Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs).

In between times, she was signed by Trend as the launch issue’s cover girl. “The Trend fashion photo shoot was my first ever ‘proper’ modelling job, where I wore designer clothes selected by stylists and had my hair and make-up done professionally,” says Morven, now 15.

Everybody wishes they could have bought into Google, Microsoft or Apple before they hit the stock market - but very few people have access to investment at this stage of a company’s life cycle. This is precisely why the UK Government introduced VCTs .

Morven has since been involved in a number of castings for Premier, and will soon feature in a ‘tartan special’ fashion spread for a national daily newspaper.

With the right management team and right infrastructure, a VCT should provide excellent tax free returns, without correlation to the other assets in your portfolio as well as offering 30% income tax relief this tax year.

“My plan is to model in London full-time, hopefully make a bit of money and then return to work in Aberdeen,” she says. “It all seems a bit unreal at times. To think that all this has come about, just by entering one competition…” 34

However, very little conveys the excitement and opportunity this type of product represents.

It has been proved that great returns are possible from VCTs. St. James's Place Wealth Management recommended VCT provides investors with exposure to the most exciting, dynamic and rewarding investment sector there is, early stage

companies on the point of expansion. What's more it does that with a team that has an exceptional track record and with a process that generates returns by adding significant value to the investments it makes. This is a product that is firmly in control of the returns it generates.

. . . a VCT should provide excellent tax returns, without correlation to the other assets in your portfolio. . .

What is a Venture Capital Trust? VCTs were introduced by the UK Government in 1995 to encourage individuals to invest in UK smaller companies. The Government achieved this by offering investors in VCTs a series of very attractive tax benefits. As a result of these tax benefits, more than £3.4 billion has been invested in VCTs between 1995 and 2008. (Source - HMRC Research).

Tax Reliefs VCTs offer a series of tax advantages unmatched by any other kind of investment product in the UK. > Upfront income tax relief of 30% on the amount invested. (Provided you hold the shares for five years and subject to a minimum investment of £3,000 and a maximum £200,000 per person per tax year). > Dividends paid to you tax-free. > Capital Gains when you sell your share in a VCT are Tax Free.

Financial planning solutions The unique tax benefits granted to VCTs make a compelling addition to certain personal portfolios. To find out more please contact Gary Walker on 01224 202400 gary.walker@sjpp.co.uk 35

We are very proud of our link with what has become Aberdeen’s most talked-about quality production, and the enthusiastic way it promotes and supports business in the city. While leading property experts, Simpson & Marwick, agree that Aberdeen is bucking the nationwide trend, the firm’s highly experienced residential property partner, Dave Geddie, has advice for sellers and purchasers in today’s turbulent marketplace. “Critical is the need to manage clients’ aspirations and expectations,” explained Dave, whose firm was crowned Residential Property Team of the Year in the recent Scottish Law Awards. “There is good movement at the top end of the Aberdeen market, which seems for the most part, to be unaffected by the general economic nervousness. “Those attempting to gain their first rung on the property ladder have been hardest hit as lenders tighten their mortgage criteria. Buy to let mortgage products are also less freely available.”

It’s a bold new look for one of the Granite City’s most successful and well known recruitment consultancies, Aberdeen Appointments Agency (aaa). With a new management structure at the forefront, the team decided that it was time to undergo a makeover. In September, the bright new visual identity was officially launched to the public in the press and online and soon it will be adorning buses around Aberdeen. “It is extremely important to us that our visual identity reflects how aaa has evolved to become the business it is today” said Associate Director, Lauren Webster. “We are a company with a buzz about it, a modern, fast moving agency that is underpinned by our core values of honesty, integrity and professionalism”.

With consumer spending in Aberdeen remaining steady, Dave predicts the likelihood of a quick recovery when confidence is renewed. “We continue to enjoy a good level of enquiry at our property shop at 4 Alford Place and hits on our website are consistently high. If clients are realistic, their properties will sell and if they are buying back into the market, less of a premium requires to be paid.”

With a staff of 55, aaa places over 70 candidates a week including Financial Directors, Project Engineers, HR professionals, Business Development, IT and Commercial personnel in a diverse range of industries including the UK, Dubai, Africa, Norway and Kazakhstan. Its team of sector specific Consultants specialise in the provision of permanent, temporary and contract personnel for a number of different sectors including IT, engineering and technical, HR, office support, accountancy and sales and marketing as well as offering an executive search facility.

> WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT

When father and son Chic and Jason Henderson first creaked open the door of the 19th century Knock Castle in Crieff, their three-year search for a Scottish home for their longharboured business dream was finally called off.

Chef Jason and his father have invested more than £1 million in the sympathetic refurbishment of the former baronial home of shipping magnate Lady McBrayne, which proudly presides over three-and-a-half acres of stunning woodlands. We were guided up the sweeping staircase to the majestic Drummond Room. Adorned in soothing eggshell and soft golden hues, the centrepiece of the generously proportioned room is a grand four-poster bed whose pillows are embossed with the Knock Castle name in fine golden threads. In the 12-roomed spa, I sampled the heavenly ‘Take Thai-M-Out’ treatment, during which the body is stimulated by boluses containing sea salt crystals and lavender in one of the best massages I have ever experienced. It was followed by a luxury facial. It sent me floating in to dinner, where Yvonne seated us in ‘the alcove’ – an intimate private moon-shaped dining space overlooking the castle entrance. 42

Operations manager Debbie Morrison of Apex Mansions welcomes a guest to their new luxury suites/apartments at Hilton Campus.

The food was an exquisite appreciation of Scotland’s natural larder. My partner, Norman, started with seared, handdived scallops with grilled Stornoway black pudding and pea dressing. Boasts chef Jason: “I get my scallops from the same place as Gordon Ramsay – except, I take delivery of mine first.” After dinner, we indulged in coffee and handmade chocolates in the lounge, where talented teenage pianist Georgina Farrell charmed goodhumoured guests. It was the perfect end to a perfect day in an intimate retreat that has introduced to the Perthshire hospitality scene a rare commodity to be cherished: a warmhearted Scottish hotel with the confidence to shirk the air of pretension that lets so many others down. Time travellers Parade welcomes back a few old friends! Lately, we have seen a massive revival of 1970’s on the catwalks, with the return of flares, mini-dresses and wedge heels (which I have to say, I am loving!). These same retro-inspired looks can be seen in all the most sought-after properties and in the covers of all the hot magazines. These days, however, these iconic statements are a little paired down with the return of some modern classics, which I’m certain will help give your room a statement without looking too Austin Powers! At Parade, we have some of the hottest designs from leading designers, including Content by Conran sofas and furniture ranges.

This October, Aberdeen will see a level of standard and service never before seen in accommodation in the city. “It’s Dubai meets Aberdeen,7 star standards” says associate Hazel Arnold a lady who is a real expert in both Aberdeen Property and business opportunities. Hazel continued, “A recent survey showed that there remains a shortage of top end serviced short-stay accommodation. We wanted to not only fill this need, but at the same time offer a standard of service and quality never before seen in Aberdeen”. APEX MANSIONS decided to come up with a concept that would be the undisputed leader above all other accommodation on offer for visiting business people. LOCH NESS LODGE

Loch Ness Lodge:

A Highland Homecoming > WORDS BY GILL BUYERS

It’s hard to believe that the 5-star Loch Ness Lodge retreat with its five luxury holiday cottages are a new addition to the Highland landscape as they blend into the wooded hillside so naturally. Just nine miles from Inverness and set in 18 acres overlooking the water, Loch Ness Lodge is a seven bed-roomed luxury haven which was unveiled in February by Scott Sutherland and sister Iona. Striking an amiable balance of the traditional and the contemporary, the team at the Lodge engaged Edinburghbased Luma Interiors to create a timeless elegance with a modern day twist. Everything has been carefully selected, from the original art work – some of which is for sale - to the fresh flowers. All seven bedrooms in the Lodge have been individually styled to an extremely high standard, with breathtaking views over Loch Ness. Our room, Affric, incorporates the grand turret of the Lodge and boasts panoramic views. The bathroom has a double-ended jacuzzi bath, a walk-in shower and luxurious Penhaligon toiletries. We were invited to join Scott and Iona for afternoon tea, homemade biscuits and chocolate cake, during which he shared with us his passion for the Lodge, and his experience in the premium hospitality sector at Boath House and Kinnaird Estate. Says Scott: “We aim to create a memorable experience for guests where they can relax, feel comfortable and at home, as if part of the family. They can enjoy the great food prepared by our talented young chef, Ross Fraser, who was trained at Skibo and under the watchful

46

eye of Marco Pierre White, and leave feeling totally spoiled and content.” That ethos was clearly evident in the dining room, where we were welcomed to dinner by our hostess for the evening, Katie. The aroma of freshly baked bread rolls whetted our appetite for a fivecourse fare. Ross had created a menu which blended easily from one course to the next at a perfect pace. Our table overlooked the dramatic scenery of the darkening Loch Ness and the excellent wine topped it off. Our visit to the Highlands ended all too quickly, but not before the full Scottish breakfast along with freshly squeezed orange juice to set us up for the day ahead. My only disappointment was that I did not have time to sample the beautiful spa area with hot tub and sauna which we peeped into before leaving. Loch Ness Lodge is not only for couples looking to escape for the weekend, but is also available for private hire to accommodate small wedding parties, corporate events or family celebrations. reader offer Book an overnight stay at Loch Ness Lodge between now and the end of February and receive a complimentary bottle of champagne and a box of handmade chocolates on arrival. ARTIST

Face the music > WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT

Aberdeen artist, Bob Harper’s greatest hope is that one of his rock ’n’ roll heroes, Keith Richards, will live well into his 80s. After all, he muses, just think what that face will look like then… Bob has combined his love of rock ‘n’ roll with his passion for portrait painting. The words that form the emotive lyrics to his subjects’ most captivating songs are etched into the lines of the face in his paintings. The effect creates an atmospheric portrait that not only tells the story of the subject, but also of the painter who clearly wants to leave for posterity his appreciation of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll legends of all time. Bob Harper is a man fascinated by faces. “There are six billion of us on the planet and we all look different,” says the former teacher. “My work combines my wonder of

faces with my love of calligraphy and song lyrics, which all too often go unheard.” His first rock ‘n’ roll portrait was of Bob Dylan, followed by John Lennon, whose face and hair are mapped with the lyrics of no fewer than 17 songs. He plays the songs over and over during each work’s construction, allowing the lyrics to form the expression on the face. Around 50 portraits are on sale on-line, although most of his work is commissioned. One face that tested the artist’s tenacity was that of Cliff Richard. “I just couldn’t

get it. It wouldn’t flow,” he admitted. Mistletoe and Wine was most definitely not on Bob’s studio play-list when this particular portrait was finally hung up to dry! www.rockandrollart.co.uk email: bob53harper@hotmail.com WIN… a specially commissioned, framed portrait of your rock ‘n’ roll icon, worth £750.

FIAT 500

52-54 Langstane Place 01224 676000 www.themusicclub.co.uk 56

The Music Club is Aberdeen’s newest and most interesting venue for laid back tunes and food. The venue is on Langstane Place, just opposite Dusk and Eljo’s and has been designed to make music accessible to anyone from seasoned performers to those interested in picking up an instrument.

You can pick up the what’s-on guide at the venue or join the mailing list. Spontaneous jams throw up unexpected combinations. The atmosphere is very welcoming and supportive, and there’s always something going on. The Music Club is rapidly staking a claim to be the musical heart of the city.

Gordon Middler and Mark Ockendon worked for almost a year to strip the building out and design the new café bar and performance areas, and it has clearly been a labour of love. “Over the years, I had been teaching music, performing, working as a session musician and going to see a lot of live bands, and I thought it would be great if you could do all that in one place and grab something to eat with your friends at the same time,” explains Gordon, “and that’s where the Music Club came from.”

“People have commented on the energy and how different it feels - a great time with no pressure,” enthuses Gordon.

The programme of performances is very diverse, so there’s something for everyone.

The café bar and performance areas are already up and running and the venue also offers rooms for hire. Plans are in place for workshops, tuition, and an after school club early next year. Mark and Gordon hope that they can replicate the Music Club’s success in other cities over time, but for now this comfortable, entertaining venue is a one-off. Gordon calls it a fresh vibe with fresh coffee – I’d call it just what Aberdeen needs.

> WORDS BY DAVID GILLANDERS Over fifty years ago Fiat launched the 500, otherwise known as the Cinquecento. It was marketed as a cheap and practical town car, measuring just 9ft.9” long and powered by a 479cc, air-cooled engine – this truly was one of the first city cars. By the time it ceased production in 1975, the 500 brand had sold a staggering 3.6 million cars. So no pressure then for the new 500, which was launched again in March 2007, exactly 50 years after the launch of the Cinquecento. After driving the new 500, similarities between the new VW Beetle and the BMW Mini become apparent. They are all striving to become the new icon of the Noughties. If it was on price alone, the Fiat would win hands

down because the price of this car starts at £8,100. There are three engines available: a 1.2 litre 8v unit, the 75 bhp 1.3 litre multijet common-rail turbo diesel and a 85 bhp 1.4 litre 16v engine, coupled to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Later this year will come the Fiat 500 Arbarth which will have a 1.4 litre engine with a variable geometry turbo charger; this will produce 135 bhp and 180 nm of torque. My impression of the 500 is that it is well built, and has a neutral handling chassis which I liked – the engine does need to be revved quite hard, which really is no hardship, and I can imagine crazy Italian drivers whisking through the streets of Milan. The car pictured is in Funky White I can well understand why Fiat picked that name to describe the colour. This little 500 must be a contender for Urban Car of the Year, but whether it can knock the original Cinquecento off its pedestal, only time will tell. 57

Win…. an overnight stay and spa treatments at the luxurious new look 5-star Fairmont St Andrews resort. Take a fresh look at the Fairmont St Andrews resort, which has undergone a £13 million refurbishment of guest rooms, the sensational spa, the lobby and additional public areas. Set on a 520 acre coastal estate, the 209-bedroom 5 star hotel overlooks the medieval skyline of St Andrews and its golden beaches. The hotel has recently re-opened its signature spa. With the essence of total tranquillity as its theme, the 12 treatment room spa combines style and elegance, indulging both body and soul. televisions, a 16-metre swimming pool, steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. Recent enhancements to the hotel include the new sports-themed bar, Rock and Spindle, and renovation of the 15,000 sq ft conference centre. SIGNING OFF

COMPETITION WINNERS

David Carry

Signing off with. . . .

Commonwealth gold medallist David Carry recently returned from Beijing Olympics having succeeded in breaking four British records. With plans to add to his medal collection, it was straight back to his gruelling training regime. The young swimmer, whose family run, Jamison & Carry, spared a few minutes to chat to Trend. what makes David Carry tick? Both in and out of the pool, I set goals and have ambitions about almost everything I do. I want to get that medal in London in 2012, but first I need to concentrate on the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010. what do you like most about living in Aberdeen? The people: The number of well wishers who take a genuine interest in my swimming career is amazing. what would be your ideal holiday? I love the Greek Islands. The flight is not too long and it is almost guaranteed great weather. what’s your ideal Aberdeen night out? When I came home after winning in the Commonwealth Games, most of my friends were there and it was a wonderful celebration. what would be your ideal weekend? Relaxing after a hard week’s training. I spend most weekends with my girlfriend, who follows a similar training regime (but claims hers is harder!) Sunday lunch is always the highlight! 59
