I absolutely hate hangovers and I wish I loved them for the obvious reason of not wanting to waste an entire day not feeling my best.

I hate what most women probably do and that is certain parts of my body. If I loved them I would definitely feel a lot more comfortable with myself and have more confidence.

My family comes from the North-east of Scotland and cullen skink is a very traditional dish but I absolutely hate it. If I loved it, it would make dinners a lot easier for me!

You said it...

I hate the goverment and especially the politians but I wish I loved them. They always make promises they can‘t keep and their ridiculous expenses are even more angering.

The

Headmaster

Alison Daniels found out why there’s a six month waiting list and a £350 fee for an appointment with Andrew Barton, Saks’ International Creative Director and star of ‘Ten Years Younger’, when she submitted to the scissors at Saks salon in Aberdeen.

So how did you get started in hairdressing? I wanted to be a fabric designer when I left school. I was always pretty good at art and English, so I went off to Art College. Now I say that I design with hair, and I’m lucky enough to get a new project and the chance to meet people. What sort of people are your clients? I see a lot of normal women and I’m always very honest about providing advice. A lot of clients have seen me on TV and save up for a consultation, or their partners treat them. It’s all about the right style and colour. Your hair can change the way you feel about yourself

and the way others see you. You can make yourself look taller and slimmer with the right cut. Your skin glows and you can lose years with a softer, more flattering shade. What projects are you currently working on? Well, I’m in talks about having my own TV show, I’m developing new products like branded hair accessories and brushes, and I’m writing a book about the cultural significance of hair and how people can make the most of what’s available. The book draws on a lot of the characters I’ve met over the years.

East meet s best ... > INTERVIEW BY NIKI TENNANT

Stuart Anderson, Head Chef, Rendezvous @ Nargile

Name your three desert island ingredients. Garlic, potatoes and lamb – it’s my favourite meat. Garlic, because I love the flavour. What’s the biggest compliment your cooking has received? It has to be from the Nargile owners. They started the restaurant 26 years ago and trust me to run it for them, which is a huge compliment to me. In the kitchen, are you hot and fiery or cool as a cucumber? Definitely cool. I enjoy my work and the pressure, and have a great team of staff so it's very rare that I get angry. Delia or Nigella? Delia, because I grew up watching her programmes with my mum. What’s the most bizarre request you’ve received from a diner? I once had a woman ask to have her whole meal blended together - the meat, rice and salad! Who’d be your dream dinner companion? Wayne Rooney. As simple as the conversation would be, the man's a hero. What’s the biggest sin anyone could commit in your kitchen? Anything to do with poor hygiene. I take great pride in the cleanliness of my kitchen. 26

Dinner Review: 210 Bistro The floor to ceiling glass frontage of 210 Bistro on South Market Street offers views of urban skyline meets working harbour. The downstairs bar sofas are the type that you can easily sink into for the evening and in the inviting first floor restaurant, dark wood contrasts with comfortable moss green chairs and booths.

We opted for the asparagus and parmesan tart (£4.25). It was a light and spring like starter served with salad and mustard dressing. I also enjoyed three delicious seared scallops on top of a soft and creamy lemon risotto, which added a pleasingly sharp contrast to the natural sweetness of the scallops (£6.95).

The menu features six starters and six main courses with the addition of changing specials, and emphasis is on local and seasonal produce.

Given the proximity of the harbour I chose the pan fried sea bass for main course. Perfectly cooked, the skin was crispy and the flesh moist. Served with sautéed new potatoes, braised leeks and a rich tangy lemon and tarragon cream sauce, it was a delight (£14.95). My partner went for a special of the evening, beef stroganoff. Tender strips of beef and a flavour packed sauce made it a true winner. The banoffee

cheesecake combined the best of two classic desserts without being too heavy (£3.95). The crème brulee was caramelised just right and accompanied by homemade shortbread and a passion fruit and mango compote (£4.25). 210 Bistro is a welcome addition to the Aberdeen dining scene whether you fancy a lunchtime sandwich downstairs in the bar, a break from retail therapy or a relaxed lunch or evening with friends, it hits the spot. 210 Bistro 210 South Market Street Aberdeen AB11 5PQ T: 01224 211857 www.210bistro.com

Wine Dinner Review: Darroch Learg On a hillside above the town of Ballater, the Darroch Learg has uninterrupted views to the mountains. The former country residence is charming and characterful with a relaxing and welcoming feel. Under the ownership of Nigel and Fiona Franks, it has built up a well deserved reputation for the quality of the food and the wine list. They host occasional wine dinners, and on this occasion we spent the evening in the company of Jean Soubeyrand of highly respected Burgundian producer Olivier Leflaive, based in the village of PulignyMontrachet. The emphasis of the evening was on white wines and it was a great way to see the different terroir influenced styles of Chardonnay.

The evening started in the lounge with a beautifully crisp glass of Bourgogne Les Setilles 2007. The grapes are sourced from both the villages of Puligny Montrachet and Meursault, giving a perfectly tuned rendition of Chardonnay. Poached Halibut in a creamy herb and endive sauce was well placed against a rich and buttery Meursault Clos Du Cromin 2006. With notes of baked apple and a savoury edge, it was lifted with a mineral acidity. Breast of chicken with truffled pommes purees, lardons and garden peas was married with my favourite expression of white Burgundy – Puligny Montrachet. In this case it was a single vineyard, Les Meix 2006. With lively fresh notes of orchard

fruits, there were touches of creaminess with mineral and peach. The finish was elegant and lingering. A beautifully ripe Epoisses cheese finished the evening, accompanied by a lovely expression of Pinot Noir - a red berry and blueberry perfumed Cotes De Beaune Villages 2006. Hooked by Seafood > WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT

As the daughter of a renowned Aberdeen fish merchant, the proprietor of the recently-opened Countesswells Fish Shop has been raised to praise the harvest of the sea. Lorna Hosie whose father, George has been in the fish trade for over four decades, has always dreamed of reintroducing to her own community a fishmonger that offers the best of produce at competitive prices. Having worked as an administrator in a fish business and helped out brother John Hosie, in his Torry fish shop over the years, Lorna saw her redundancy as an opportunity to call on her experience within the industry and become her own boss. The Countesswells Fish Shop was opened in early March, just a stone’s throw from her home.

For additional convenience, Lorna and her team can even vacuum-pack your purchases. All in all, the Countesswells Fish Shop offers a very different and much more personal service to the supermarket fish counter. You’ll be hooked.

Lorna prides herself on sourcing fresh fish daily which, wherever possible, is purchased locally. As well as making her own frequent visits to the dawn fish market, Lorna’s day begins by contacting her Peterhead-based buyer who purchases on her behalf, depending on the best of the day’s landings and Lorna’s customers’ demands. If she cannot meet a customer’s specialist requirements by sourcing from Aberdeen or Peterhead, she’ll call on market traders at Grimsby, Scrabster or even Iceland to ensure they are not disappointed. While her chilled counter offers the family favourites you’d expect to find in any good fishmonger – including tasty ownrecipe fish and crab cakes - Lorna can, with prior notice, source live lobster, mouth-watering oysters, red snapper and plump, juicy langoustine, guaranteed to wow guests at any dinner party or barbecue.

Single visit crowns and inlays are very popular as this allows people to get their treatment complete in one visit rather than waiting a couple of weeks for laboratory work to be returned. Dental implants are also becoming increasingly popular due to the impressive results that this can provide in replacing missing teeth. Dental implants can also stabilise dentures which will not only help increase confidence but also prevent the discomfort of ill fitting dentures.

PROFILE

Ronnie Watt’s introduction to the sport that was to become his life’s work couldn’t have been more dramatic. As a 16year-old engineering apprentice with a promising career, Ronnie’s leg became trapped in machinery, leaving surgeons battling to save his limb. Ronnie spent much of his stay in hospital pondering how he would be able to take up a sport when fully recovered. “My friends were going horse-riding, even parachuting, but that was not for me. I tried judo, but there was something about it I didn’t like,” remembers Ronnie, (now 62) and 8th Dan of the World Karate Confederation. Then a trip to the cinema, which saw iconic Bond Sean Connery in a karate stand-off with Pussy Galore in ‘Goldfinger’, inspired Ronnie to try this other form of martial arts.“The training was primitive and very hard. The discipline was a culture shock,” admits Ronnie, who launched his Shotokan School in 1965 – only two years after his horrific accident. A passionate Ronnie has made five visits to train with the great masters at some of the toughest universities in Japan. In 2001, Aberdeen lured 900 black belts from 45 countries to the world championships, confirming the city’s rightful place as a karate world centre of excellence. Two thousand black belts have come through Ronnie’s organisation and students have won 38 medals in World and European events. His focus is now on shaping cadets and children in preparation for the next world championship challenge in Venice 18 months from now. Ronnie’s massive contribution to the karate world is the subject of a new book by acclaimed martial arts author, Dr Clive Layton entitled ‘Ronnie Watt, 8th Dan Director of Shotokan of the World Karate Confederation’. The book is to be published by the National Karate Institute Scotland, and it is hoped that the many people who read the book will be inspired by Ronnie’s struggle to get to the top of one of the hardest sports in the world. Exceed through positive change

Helping You to Help Your People Donald Stewart Photography

Aberdeen performance improvement business, Exceed is the first based in the North of Scotland to offer the highlyrespected LEAN Kaizen programme to organisations.

Recruiting and retaining people of the highest calibre is crucial to the success of any business and employee benefits are very often high on the agenda for many candidates applying for posts in the current market.

LEAN Kaizen was originally developed by Toyota and, roughly translated from Japanese, means ’change for the better’. It has become increasingly popular in the public sector as a means of helping staff to optimise efficiency and, in doing so, provide better public services.

From the business owner’s perspective, motivated people who are committed and show a ‘can do’ attitude invariably flourish hand in hand with the business and the security of a comprehensive package of benefits can be a vital employee driver for success.

Pat Browne, who helped Aberdeenshire Council to be recognised for the excellence of its work at a European level in her role as performance improvement leader, recently joined Exceed as a performance coach, specialising in the use of LEAN Kaizen.

Gary Walker is a Partner of the St. James’s Place Partnership, the advisory channel for the award winning St. James’s Place Wealth Management.

To date, Exceed has mainly provided performance improvement services for oil, gas, and mining clients. With the LEAN Kaizen offering, Exceed is now positioned to work with the public and beyond. Pat said: ‘’Working with Exceed is a fantastic opportunity to bring positive change to virtually any organisation. The Kaizen approach is focused on customers and cutting out unneccessary steps and processes.’’ Visit www.xcd.com or call Pat on 01224 577943 for more information.

From Aberdeen’s Queen’s Road, Gary and his team can offer cost-effective strategies and solutions for businesses in all sectors and of all sizes including retirement benefits; flexible benefits allowing employees to tailor a package to their own requirements; online total reward statements helping employees understand their benefits and private medical insurance. GYM MYTHS & FEARS DISPELLED

FITNESS

Media and sports graduate Scot Thompson – Trend’s new fitness guru – is a professional athlete, who competes internationally for Scotland in athletics and Highland games. He has been a fitness coach for 10 years. Originally from Nairn, motivational speaker Scot has chosen to settle in Aberdeen ahead of the next Commonwealth Games, with the aim of turning the spotlight on the city’s state-of-the-art sports village.

Gym Myths and Fears 1 Everybody is looking at me! Wrong. Once you get to know other members and the staff, you will feel more at ease. Liken it to your first day at a new job. 2 The personal trainers will be aggressive like Harvey from Fat Camp. The likes of Harvey are a dying breed. Think of trainers as a gym buddy with lots of knowledge. 3 But if I lift weights I will get big muscles? You should be so lucky! Even with all the weightlifting, eating and supplementation I take to help my muscles grow, I find it hard to put on more than 5-7lbs of muscle a year. Ladies, without the abundance of testosterone, your muscles will not grow very much at all. 4 I need to buy all the right expensive equipment. Not necessarily. Ask the gym staff or your trainer for tips on what is essential. 5 I won’t know what to do– I'm going to look stupid. No you won’t. Any good gym will offer a free induction and demonstration. Often you will get a free check-up every 6-8 weeks to make sure you are on the right track. 6 I'm too old to use a gym. Not true. Some of my oldest clients have been in their 70s. 7 I'm not very fit Good – you are in the right place, then! Try cycling for a short period (like 5mins) and record your distance. Try to cycle a little further every time.

8 I've been a member at other gyms and I get bored after a while. Set yourself goals and change your programme every 6-8 weeks to keep training interesting. 9 I don’t like using the gym. I feel uncomfortable with all those big men about. Some gyms are typically for bodybuilders only and can be loud and intimidating for other users. Find a gym that is right for your needs or perhaps train as part of a group or class. 10 How do I lose the fat from my tummy? I need to go on a diet. We cannot choose the areas where we want to lose fat. Activities like putting short bursts of effort into your cardio or weights workouts will help to burn fat. Circuit classes are great for this. Enthralling landscapes, exemplary Georgian architecture, proud monuments to the conflicts that have shaped a nation’s very complexion, and an infectious, vibrant culture… Each time I make the pilgrimage to Edinburgh, I vow not to leave it so long before returning to the grand old lady that is our country’s capital. This time, it was with my 11-year-old son Marcus, a devotee of the legendary Greyfriars Bobby and a wee boy who embraces heady historic tales of Scotland like a dog with a bone. We had the pleasure of staying in The George Hotel, whose exterior is a majestic feature on the vibrant George Street, and warrants its place among Edinburgh’s trove of many treasures. 44

Our contemporary, deluxe room had a panoramic window with jaw-dropping views. To welcome us was a platter of handmade confectionery and chocolate-dipped fresh fruit, which set us up perfectly for an afternoon of exploration. At dinner, we were seated in a leather booth beneath a stained-glass dome and treated like royalty. We shared a platter of breads and olives with dipping tray, followed by succulent white fish with a stack of chunky chips for Marcus, and a fillet steak draped in Parma ham for me.

We retired to our lovely room with a platter of pungent Scottish cheeses and an artistic ice cream dessert that warranted pride of place in the National Gallery of Scotland. TAKE THE PLUNGE Aberdeen Watersports, on Waterloo Quay, is the only Padi 5 Dive Centre in Aberdeen.

They offer a variety of scuba options, which can be utilised by anyone from the age of eight upwards. Children can enter the ‘Bubble Maker’ programme, an introductory course to scuba, or the ‘Seal Team’ programme which lasts for six months and consists of 20 dives. Adults enter the ‘Discover Scuba’ course which is the best option for securing the Padi qualification. The ‘Discover Scuba’ programme consists of five pool sessions and four open water dives, all with highly qualified and extremely friendly instructors. There is also some academic work involved, and upon completion a Padi qualification with the capability to dive up to 18m wil be achieved. Training takes place every Friday from 7pm-10pm. The evening starts at Aberdeen Watersports, where a thorough induction and safety briefing is given. After this the indoor dive commences at RGU Sport where the real fun can begin! 46

The indoor dives are tailored to be suitable for swimmers of all ability and instructors are happy to spend individual time with the more apprehensive ones. Whilst in the pool, around 45 minutes will be spent under water. My instructor is the highly experienced Jane McInnes, veteran competitor and judge and star of a number of carriage driving training DVDs. Jane gives us a tour of the carriages, and tack rooms, which contain enough leather and metal to give a bondage fetishist wet dreams. My lesson starts with a guide to harnessing the immaculately well behaved Jenny, our pony, who stands patiently while I fumble around with an assortment of straps and buckles. Then Jane takes us off down the path while I learn to steer and hold the reins. Once we’re in the field, it’s my turn and after an early tendency to veer left, we’ve mastered the art of going in a straight line. Next up, we’re slaloming left and right until I work out the right

The centre also offers a hire service for brides that want to arrive at the church in style and several of the carriages have appeared in films. It also caters for pleasure drives and picnics through the forest or down by the Dee. Jenny points out that carriage driving is a friendly, family-oriented sport and that her customers range from business people relaxing after work to children of eight and upwards. A well known face in the Aberdeen legal world has just launched a unique business venture. Lili said: “The logic behind starting my own business was to allow me to further develop the way employment advice can be offered. Whilst working as a lawyer, I very often had to call on my knowledge of human psychology or mediation skills, so I am very excited at the prospect of being able to offer a much more rounded solutiondriven service.”

The aim is to help people reach their full potential and the business to perform better. At one time, an investment in coaching was made only for directors but it is now making a difference at all levels of business. Kirsty – who grew up surrounded by farmland in the Udny area of Aberdeenshire – established The Garden Design Company Scotland a decade ago. She combined her business acumen with her flair for 52

design. Buoyed by the results of her intensive market research, she undertook a series of business courses. She was soon to sign up for a garden and landscape design course with the Royal Horticultural Society, which included a year’s portfolio work. Coupled with press coverage about her talents, this led to a massive interest in her work. In 2001, she received a surprise call from the production company, Tern TV,

inviting her to work with the BBC’s Beechgrove Garden as a designer of community gardens – a commission that returns year after year. Kirsty has remained loyal to her preferred contractors. The projects she undertakes range from small town gardens to 20-acre estates, for which she provides a full range of design services from concept through to final completion including planting plans and plant supply

A garden gift from a visiting aunt and uncle from Australia never failed to turn Kirsty’s thoughts to them when she admired it from her window… which inspired a new on-line offering from her business: www.gardengiftcompany.com In partnership with a well established nursery, it provides a sustainable alternative to cut flowers. A wide range of luxuriously gift-wrapped

plants grown in the North of Scotland can be delivered throughout the UK. Lasting gifts to mark birthdays, anniversaries or any special occasion can also be ordered from the site, which goes live in July. E: kirsty@gardendesignscotland.com T: 01224 739184 www.gardendesignscotland.com

F L TALE O U F R U O A COL RT RARY A O P M E CONT NT I T E NNA S BY NIK D R O >W

For 35 years, Peacock Visual Arts has not only changed the lives of the people it works with, but has also transformed the cultural landscape of the North-east of Scotland. Peacock was founded in 1974 by a group of young artists who recognised the North-east’s need for a printmaking studio, where professional artists and keen amateurs could come to work and develop their skills. More than three decades on, Peacock has gained international reputation for its art work and is acknowledged as one of the pillars of Scotland’s arts scene. Peacock’s shop, just off the Castlegate in Aberdeen, showcases the work of the region’s best-loved and most critically acclaimed artists, including Joyce Cairns and Frances Walker. It also features the talents of national and international artists who have been drawn to Aberdeen to work with Peacock’s master printmakers. The leading contemporary art organisation is now a vibrant social enterprise that has won international acclaim for its exhibitions and its ground-breaking education and public events programmes. Said campaign director, Elly Rothnie: “We have introduced to the North-east exhibitions that stimulate, challenge and inspire. Recent exhibitions have given Aberdeen audiences first glimpses of new work by artists such as Michael Visocchi and Seripop, who have gone on to exhibit at the Tate and the Baltic in Newcastle. “We also work with the city’s more deprived communities, hosting activities and projects that encourage communication and understanding and build community spirit – and allow us to give something back to the region that has been the launch pad for our success.” Never one to stand still, Peacock is developing a major new Centre for Contemporary Arts, introducing to Aberdeen a vibrant cultural heart. Visit Peacock visual Arts throughout June and July to view the ‘35 Years of Great Stuff’ exhibition. 21 Castle Street Aberdeen AB11 5BQ T: 01224 639 539 www.peacockvisualarts.com

MUSIC

HIT PARADE... > WORDS BY DAVID NICHOLSON

Hi there. My name is David and I’m an addict. It’s been a month since my first hit and I still can’t get enough. When I'm not using, I'm talking about using. When I'm not talking about it, I'm thinking about it; daydreaming about the next time. And every time is as good as that first time. But like any addiction, it has its downsides. I've lost hours (or should that be days?!) of my life in what feels like the blink of an eye. It keeps me up into the wee small hours night after night. Bills are unpaid, dishes are stacking up...Colleagues say my work is suffering; that I look tired and pale, that I should take a day off, get some sun...Heck, it's even the reason this very article was submitted waaaaay past its deadline..

So if the first step to recovery is admitting that I have a problem, then here we go: Ladies and gentlemen…I am addicted to...Spotify.

It’s easy. Search for your favourite band and there they are. Click on a song and it’ll play immediately with no (or at least very little) lag.

“So what,” I hear you cry, “is a Spotify when it's at home?!”

Select an album and it’ll play the whole album. Click on the ‘Biography’ tab to read an article about the history of the band. Go to the ‘Radio’ section to listen to acts which sound like the one you selected. Make playlists which you can send to friends.. In short, it’s awesome.

If you like music - any kind of music whether as a trainspotter or a tourist, I urge you to go to www.spotify.com and download the application to find out. It’ll take two minutes..but I warn you, it could cost you hours… Spotify looks and acts very much like Itunes except it streams from the internet.

So how much does it cost? Well, the basic version will play a 30 second advert between songs every half hour. But apart from that, it’s free... absolutely legally free!! Thanks for your time. It felt good to share. And now I’m off for another hit.

DJ REVIEW

> WORDS BY ADRIAN GOMES

The Deep End Presents… A mainstay in the Snafu calendar,The Deep End has been Aberdeen’s only weekly underground house night for over four years now (albeit under various alias). Presided over by Funky Transport (Classic / Playhouse), and recently joined by Mr Green, the night has seen its share of international heavyweight special guests. Previously, the club has played host to the likes of Kerri Chandler, Derrick Carter and Gene Farris (USA), The Wagner Bros. (Brazil), Marcus Enochson and Todd Terje (Scandinavia), Azad Rizvi and Jimpster (London), Rebel Waltz (Barcelona) and Tomoki Tamura (Japan). The term ‘underground house’ is quite generic. Regulars can expect to hear

Chicago house, Balearic beats, soulful and disco house, plus the odd four-tothe-floor classic thrown in for crowd-pleasing effect. The small door charge and location of the club attracts a capacity crowd made up of music-lovers, weekend players and sophisticated academics. The friendly bartenders know how to shake a mean Manhattan, and will appease your palate with a range of other mixed drinks such as Bellinis, Brambles and Margaritas. Regulars have their favourites from old

cocktail lists, so don’t be surprised to hear people asking for Dr. Peppers, Kojaks or Julio Hell Are You’s! Forthcoming guests include Pat Mahoney (LCD Soundsystem / DFA), QBurns Abstract Message (USA), Graeme Park (Hacienda), Maurice Fulton (TBC) and Rub N’ Tug (TBC). See you on the dancefloor! Saturday June 6th – Special Disco Version featuring Pat Mahoney (LCD) and Q-Burns Abstract Message (USA). Support from Funky Transport. Doors 10pm – 3am. I am sure most of you have either heard or read about the Bugatti Veyron – the four wheel drive, 200 mph plus, three quarter of a million pound worth of super car, now owned by Volkswagen. I have never had the opportunity to drive one and probably never will but who cares, for today I had the pleasure of driving an authentic Bugatti Type 37. The specification of the Type 37 is remarkable. Built in 1929, one of 286, it has a 1496cc, four cylinder engine, which develops 60 hp at 4700 rpm and the whole vehicle just weighs 750kgs; a Mini weighs in at 1135 kgs! Ettore Arco Isidoro Bugatti was born in Milan in 1881; his father Carlo Bugatti 58

signed the contract to manufacture Bugattis in 1902 and a legend was then formed. The outbreak of World War One signalled a turning point for the Bugatti family when they moved from Milan to Paris, and this is where Ettore designed eight cylinder and 16 cylinder aeroplane engines. After the war he went back to Molsheim (now French Territory) and reopened his plant at its original location. He then continued to build light elegant sports cars that won victories at Le Mans and thus began a

winning streak that lasted over five years with triumphs totalling 412. I am astounded by the attention to detail on the Type 37 and I must highlight certain of the engineering features which I think are quite amazing on a car of this age, namely the fully adjustable brake balance bar, only found today on the most expensive competition cars. The steering, suspension and brakes marry together to give this car an outstanding ride quality, considering it is 82 years old. I believe that on the back roads of Aberdeenshire it would give many modern cars a run for their money. The noise and smell of the 37 will linger with me for a very long time.

After 18 months of playing an increasing part of modern life in Aberdeen, we the Trend team think it’s time to hand over to you…

Tell us what you think next issue and you could win dinner up to the value of £100 courtesy of The Albyn Bar and Restaurant! Go on, get it off your chest… you could be the author whose letter wins a top prize!

Please email us before July 10, 2009: info@trendmagazine.co.uk. Include your name, address and contact numbers and tell us where you picked up your copy of Trend.

STAR LETTER Dear Trend, Having recently moved to Aberdeen from Colchester, I admit to feeling a little bit homesick for the first few weeks. Although I’d done some research on the city before moving here with my job, I did feel like a fish out of water. Then, I came across Trend magazine in my local deli and was instantly hooked! Trend has given me more tips and advice about where to shop, dine and socialise than any guide book ever could. My weekends are spent discovering the many gems the city has to offer, thanks to your magazine. Can’t wait for the next issue! Sarah Williams Bridge of Don Sarah was the lucky winner of dinner, to the value of £100 at Malmaison!

Dear Trend,

Dear Trend,

Dear Trend,

A massive thank you to your contributor, David Nicholson, whose article in the last issue of Trend prompted me to get a group of friends together to see Amy Sawers at her recent gig in Café Drummonds. Her music was captivating and her talent blew us away. The feature not only gave us a great night out, but also earned Amy a new devoted following.

How refreshing it is to be able to pick up a magazine and not to have to plan a weekend in Glasgow or London when I want to buy something that’s featured in its fashion pages! I’d been searching for months for a specific style of waistcoat and found it in Attic after seeing it modelled in Trend. My boyfriend is delighted that all those weeks of trailing round the shops have finally come to an end!

I read with interest David Gillanders’ review of the Suzuki K7 GSX R 1000. As a biker with some 30 years on the road, I’d agree it’s undoubtedly the best in class as a 1000cc sports bike. How’s about putting an elite touring bike to the test? I’m considering trading in my much loved Honda Varadero, and I’d be keen to know what David makes of the BMW 1200 GS.

SAS Scandinavian Airlines fly to Copenhagen directly from Aberdeen. Hop on a high speed train from the airport to Malmo, Sweden’s third largest city, and prepare to be wowed by many of Scandinavia’s latest trends. Malmo Many shops in this vibrant city are part of major indoor shopping centres like Hansa and Triangeln. Take a stroll along Baltzargatan and Storgatan, the main pedestrian shopping streets, where you’ll find Swedish brands such as Tiger for both men and women.

Where to start? From international fashion houses to small basement designer shops, real gems can be discovered here. Stroget is the longest pedestrian shopping street in Europe and home of Royal Copenhagen, Georg Jensen silver and Illums Bolighus, the latter a ‘must visit’ for the best in interior design. The most quirky boutiques, though, are in the side streets. Kronprinsensgade Street offers fabulous shoes from Bruno & Joel and Notabene.

Stop at the quaint little Lilla Torg square to have a refreshing coffee and do some serious people watching. In a courtyard just off this popular meeting place is the Form/Design Centre. This is a real haven for picking up some quirky household goods or textiles and simply be inspired by the design exhibitions in the rest of the building. www.formdesigncentre.com

Kompagnistraede and Laederstraede – running parallel to Stroget – are bursting with fabulous ceramics, glassware and jewellery representing the work of some 30 designers.

What next? It’s back on the train across the Oresund Bridge and to the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen!

* Wonderful Copenhagen has produced a 50-page guide to His & Her Copenhagen, providing tips on shopping, design and eating out. For your free copy, visit London@visitdenmark.com

SOUND BITES

Life through a lens...

...Kirstin Gove

Kir stin Gove, ST

I have never felt so unfit in my life. It is like my body is going into denial and do you know why? It’s the sight of all my lithe-limbed, fellow Aberdonians pounding the city streets with a spring in their step and joy in their faces.

Believe me, these running machines seem to be everywhere at the moment and they’re making me feel totally inadequate! I made my usual trip for the Sunday papers at the weekend and these people were out in their hoards…. there they were, on every pavement, looking like they’d been exercising for hours but worse still, looking like they were ENJOYING it! I just don’t get it. 62

Once a week, my youngest and I like to partake in some sweet treats at our favourite coffee establishment after the morning school-run. It’s a very relaxing hour for us but even then I have to turn my back to the window to avoid the sight of the new breed of ‘Super Mum,’ who is not only track-suited and booted and ready to run a half marathon (makeup fully in place, of course) but she’s also pushing a three-wheeled (designer) buggy.

V Presenter STOP NOW.. come in and eat some cake like me! Perhaps I should attempt to defend my current lethargic state. Aside from the occasional pilates class and yoga session, I’ve recently been fighting a fitness battle on two fronts - a bad back coupled with a long-standing cupcake addiction renders me powerless when it comes to pulling on my running shoes and joining the masses. I’m sure you can understand. So, cruelly confined to the house and office, I sit at my computer and fill out yet another sponsorship form for a friend who has decided to run for charity and personal achievement. Joking aside, I really do think you’re all terrific. To those of you taking part in the Bling Fling, Race for Life, Hairy Haggis, Baker Hughes and many more, I raise a mug of sugary mochaccino and a pain au chocolat to you, and wish you all the very best.

I spent a year playing rugby in New Zealand when I left school before going to University in Edinburgh for four years to study Business & Accountancy.

year for the three month run into our opening. I now have a team of over 100 staff and am really enjoying life in Aberdeen now the hotel is up and running.

After university, I started with Malmaison as a graduate in 2002, when we opened Malmaison in Birmingham. After two years mainly spent in food & beverage, I moved home to Glasgow Malmaison as Brasserie Manager. In 2005, I became Deputy General Manager in Glasgow and then took on my first General Manager’s role at Hotel du Vin (our sister company) in Tunbridge Wells at the start of 2007. This was a great first hotel to run and one that gave me the opportunity to grow in the role. I moved to Aberdeen in August last

Where in the world is your favourite room with a view? It would have to be the view from our table in Thomas Keller’s Per Se restaurant in New York. The dining room overlooks Central Park, and the view on the day was as spectacular as the meal that was served.

What ‘tip’ would you give anyone starting out in the hospitality business? Be prepared to work hard, learn from those you work for and with, and always keep a positive outlook.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job as GM? Building a team and seeing them develop their careers. It’s also always massively rewarding to see the team gaining recognition for their commitment to providing great hospitality. When you’re not looking after your guests, who is looking after you? My girlfriend Paula, who has put up with my long hours - fortunately she understands as she’s worked in the industry as an opening GM too! I am a fan of eating out when I get the chance, good wine and most sports. I was recently away skiing in the Alps, which is one of my favourite ways of switching off from work.
