Unfortunately I tend to work my lunch hour as we are so busy most of the time. If I do go out I like to go to Number 1, Number 10, Rock Salt & Snails or there’s this new place called Prego that I quite like.

I only have an hour so I usually just meet up with friends and nip to The Good Food Shop or the nearest baker. I enjoy shopping too, when I can find the time!

A personal shopping service with a twist, ‘Bs Knees by appointment’ can bring clothes to your office at a convenient time, or run a workshop for a group. You can also make an individual appointment, day or evening, at B’s Knees, where our adviser will help put together a wardrobe concept for your lifestyle including accessories.

Lorraine Leslie and Jackie Allen.

The demands of career and family life, coupled with the pressures of keeping fit, looking youthful, and having the right image for every event, mean it’s little wonder that so many women dread shopping. That’s why we’ve devised a concept that gives time to our clients while also easing stress levels.

The Sun Spot > WORDS BY ANNE ALLAN

Complete a profile questionnaire and our fashion advisers will compile a complete ‘capsule wardrobe’ or find the one-off piece, be it for corporate wear, business travel, holidays, or that special event. There is a one-off charge of £100 which is totally refundable against any purchases. We also offer add-on services such as dry cleaning and an alterations service. We even have a health and beauty salon.

Few people are aware of the benefits of moderate use of a sun bed to ensure healthy levels of Vitamin D, which is essential for good health.

There’s one phrase that’s synonymous with all three of the North-east’s Parade stores: We only do gorgeous. Inspired by her love of interiors, proprietor Angela McCardle launched lifestyle boutique brand, Parade, in 2004 and now has two stores in Alford and one in the seaside town of Stonehaven. Parade has remained resolute in its commitment to being an out-of-town independent that offers shoppers the kind of ‘day out’ experience with which generic High Street stores cannot compete. At Parade, they are passionate about style and obsessive about great furniture, fashion and gifts at affordable prices. Angela has an infectious enthusiasm for what are, quite simply, lovely things. Her shops showcase them as an eclectic mix of one-off, quirky gifts, classic and contemporary interiors, and women’s wear by Avoca and footwear by Ugg and Hush Puppies, to name but a few. Parade also specialises in gifts, classic toys and furniture for babies and children up to the age of five. There’s also a colourful collection of funky jewellery in each of the three 12

stores, which are a treasure trove of finds for anyone with a passion for gorgeous things. The coffee shop at the Watchmakers Lane store in Alford, is a destination in itself. Designed with retro flair, it’s famous for its traditional cooking, hearty soups, organic breads and heavenly cakes. “If you like our sofas, you’ll love our pottery, and if you like our cards, you’ll love our lamps and clocks,” enthused Angela, who successfully juggles the running of her business with three children aged under five. “Our furniture and homewares collection, which includes the Conran, Ethnicraft, Pierson, and Sia labels, is high end. At Parade, you’ll find items such as a classic farmhouse French oak table, that most people dream of sitting their friends around when they buy their first home.” It’s easy to spot the wide-eyed shopper who is visiting Parade for the first time. And with personal service, easy parking and little extras such as free gift-wrapping, they’ll be sure to return.

Independents’ Day Susan Patterson with her staff @hamishmunro

> WORDS BY SUSAN PATTERSON, DIRECTOR

In a time when much doom and gloom has been cast over the retail industry, there is a positive note for independents. As research reveals, consumers are shunning the high street in favour of niche and premium retailers. Making it their business to know customers well, and in turn providing high quality merchandise that still has a unique edge to tempt the customer and speaks to them on a personal level, is something that independents have always done well and something they must continue to excel at. As the high street goes more and more towards self-service we feel @hamishmunro that it is vital to maintain the staffing levels, and to continue to provide training to enhance the level of customer service. An independent business cannot run well without good staff who know all about the products they are selling, and who will give the extra effort to keep the customer happy. Leaving behind our most successful year to date we will be striving @hamishmunro to achieve the same again in 2009. @hamishmunro 19-25, Thistle St, Aberdeen AB10 1UY Tel: 01224 641388 15

BELMONT

BELMONT STREET

Walk this way: Explore Belmont There’s more than meets the eye down this bustling walkway. Centred in the heart of the city, it is the quintessential place to eat, meet and greet, or shop ‘til you drop.

> WORDS BY NICOLA SMITH

It’s a street of split personalities, the first meeting the needs of the caffeinedeprived in the morning, the rendezvous luncheons in the afternoon and the spending spree shoppers at the weekend. The second takes the lead when darkness descends on Belmont Street, and the eager socialites flood the street in their hundreds to the pubs and bars of their penchant.

browsing forever with its fun, quirky, accessories for both wearing and furnishing.

Belmont Street has something for everyone, with a mixture of pubs, bars, cafes, restaurants and shops to appeal to every taste bud. Some of the well established members of the Belmont family, such as Revolution, The Beautiful Mountain and Juniper have long bestowed us with sumptuous cocktails, gorgeous home bakes and elegant home furnishings, to say the least.

Not forgetting of course, the great range of shops Belmont Street beholds. The Academy Shopping Centre is host to a variety of high-end stores, such as Attic, Concept and Quicksilver, and for the latest technology the esteemed Bang & Olufsen sits right across the road.

Alongside the old hands of Belmont Street, the newer additions sit nicely. The recently opened Pizza Express is a must for lunch or dinner, and the fabulously chic ‘It’s Kitsch’ can have you 22

Just around the corner in one of Belmont’s side streets lies Kilau Coffee, a discreet lovable café with crepes to make your mouth water, and hot chocolates with a mountain of marshmallows.

If shopping and eating is not reason enough for visiting Belmont Street, then The Belmont Picture house should be. The picture house offers a selection of films that range from art-house to quality mainstream. It is the perfect venue to relax and finish off a great day down Belmont Street. 23

CHEF FOCUS

CHEF FOCUS

The meal deal > INTERVIEW BY SARAH WATTIE

Who are your fantasy dinner party guests? Nigella Lawson, Marco Pierre White and Clare Smith. Nigella, because of the light touches she adds to food, Marco because he was the first reality TV Chef when I was training and he was fresh. I would have Clare because she has just had a wonderful start to her career that would be interesting to hear about. What are your top three desert island ingredients? Ideally, cigarettes, vodka and a lighter, but if I had to have one food ingredient it would be potatoes, because they can be re-grown. What is your food heaven and your food hell? My food heaven is chocolate fondant and my food hell is Pot Noodle – it is beyond me how anyone could eat them. Which dish says ‘home’ to you? My mum’s home-made poor man’s moussaka – she makes it with potatoes instead of aubergine and it is fantastic. What’s always in your fridge at home? My wife has just had a baby boy so at the moment, baby food!

Tournedos Rossin i Ingredients • • • • • • • •

50g butter Dashes of olive oil 2 Beef Tournedos, 7-8cm across and 4cm deep (at room temperature) Salt and fresh ground black pepper 2 thick slices of foie gras 2 thick slices of good white bread, each slice cut into a circle the size of the steak 2 field mushrooms, slightly larger than the steaks Red wine jus, to serve

To garnish • Chervil sprigs

Go on… Share with us your secret junk food indulgence. It is either Haribo or Jelly Belly’s. Who has been your biggest inspiration? Ivor Clark: He is a chef I worked with about eight years ago. He was very passionate and never accepted second best, and taught me that discipline and structure is the best way to run a kitchen. Andy Booth, Head Chef The Albyn Bar and Restaurant, Albyn Place, Aberdeen Tel: 01224 224250 26

What three words would your kitchen colleagues use to describe you? Angry, loud and aggressive.

Method 1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large, heavy-based frying pan. Add in the beef tournedos and fry, without moving them, for 3 minutes. 2. Turn the tournedos over and cook for a further 3 minutes, until the steaks are crusted on the outside but rare inside. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper and set aside to rest. 3. Heat the frying pan the tournedos were cooked in. Add in the foie gras and fry until just caramelised. Remove the foie gras and keep warm. 4. Add the bread slices to the pan and fry until crisp 5. Meanwhile, grill the field mushrooms until tender. 6. Place the fried bread slices in the centre of two plates, and then top each serving with steak, then the foie gras and then the mushroom. 7. To finish, garnish with chervil, watercress and pour over the jus.

Sunday Lunch Review: The Atholl Hotel If there is one tradition that I like to uphold, it’s that of Sunday lunch. In the winter, I cook a roast most weeks. I also love to go out for Sunday lunch, so heading to the Atholl Hotel on Kings Gate seemed like a great idea. I’m no stranger to the Atholl as it’s been my regular venue for wine courses and wine club for a number of years.

Restaurant REVIEWS > WORDS BY CAROL BROWN

Last year’s refurbishment to the restaurant and bar area in warming autumnal tones creates a welcoming environment. Despite being busy, service was spot on as usual, combining friendly professionalism.

I can’t see past roast rib of beef on a Sunday, and this didn’t disappoint. Thick, tender slices came with rich gravy and an enormous Yorkshire pudding (£10.95). The children enjoyed a traditional roast turkey with all the trimmings (£11.50) and a very good potato-topped seafood pie. (£10.95)

Dinner Review: Ciao Napoli Ciao Napoli is housed over two levels in a granite townhouse providing two contrasting areas: the wood-panelled and more intimate street level, and the bright basement which was soon buzzing early on a Saturday evening. We needed time to ponder the menu to take in the wide range of starters, pasta, meat and fish dishes. I’m a great fan of southern Italian white wines, so was pleased to see a Falanghina Del Benevento IGT 2007 from Antica Hiepinia (£17.50) on the totally Italian wine list, which covered many recognisable Italian regions. With scents of sweet almond and ripe melon, it was fresh and lemon zesty and proved to be a good partner for the seafood fest that I’d decided on.

28

The a la carte Sunday lunch menu features both North-east favourites and dishes with round-the-world influences. Scottish produce is a regular feature. Whilst I was saving myself for the main event, hubby and sons tucked into steaming bowls of flavour-packed soups – Scotch broth and lentil, potato and carrot (£3.30).

They were happy to oblige with my request to have one of the pasta dishes as a starter, and I really enjoyed my agnolotti all’aragosta - four plump lobster-filled pasta parcels, cooked perfectly al-dente with a creamy brandy sauce topped with king prawns. (£6.40/9.40). The intensity of hubby’s slow-roasted peppers with buffalo mozzarella and rocket was also a winner (£6.90). I’d chosen the ‘catch of the day’ a flavourful platter of salmon, king prawns and sea bass grilled with garlic butter and seasoned with black pepper and chilli (£23.95). I loved the lemony dressing on the accompanying salad.

Across the table, chicken breast stuffed with haggis and apple, and served with a grain mustard sauce (£10.25) was well received, the classical combination of flavours complementing each other well. So generous were the portions that I nearly refused dessert - but how can you turn down a light sticky toffee pudding with abundant dates? (£4.50) You’ll be well looked after at the Atholl. Comfortable surroundings and good food in one of Aberdeen’s gorgeous granite buildings make it an ideal venue for a family Sunday lunch. The Atholl Hotel 54 Kings Gate, Aberdeen, AB 15 4YN 01224 323505 www.atholl-aberdeen.co.uk

It was pasta all round for the rest of the table. Younger son declared the lasagne one of the best that he’s had and he’s tried lots of lasagne! ( £8.90). Elder son had rich and garlicky tagliatelle carbonara (£8.90), and hubby the tagliatelle buongustaia, a flavourful comforting dish of chicken, tomato, mascarpone, peas and mushrooms (£8.90). Refreshing lemon sorbet and a tartufo nero (chocolate ice-cream surrounding zabaglione) finished the meal. Great food accompanied by speedy, friendly service mean that a return to Ciao Napoli is certain. Ciao Napoli 10 Bon-Accord Crescent, Aberdeen, AB11 6DN Tel 01224 213223 www.ciaonapoli.co.uk 29

Change of Scene Wine

> WORDS BY CAROL BROWN

Do you find yourself reaching for the same wine time and time again?

It’s such a big wine world out there, and I’m always on the look out for something a little different. These lively whites will take you a little way off the beaten track. Casa Marin ‘Estero’ Sauvignon Gris 2007, San Antonio Valley Chile Sauvignon Gris is another name for Sauvignon Rose, which is a pink-skinned version of Sauvignon Blanc. This is herbaceous with peapod, peach and citrus scents. It’s refreshingly crisp and dry with a lively sherbet side. £13.99 Great Grog Edinburgh www.greatgrog.co.uk Abadal Picpoul/Sauvignon/Chardonnay, Catalonia, 2007 Spain Picpoul is found in the Languedoc in France and I like it on its own for its fresh apple and pear characters. This is an easy drinking blast of ripe peach and zingy citrus. £6.79 Great Grog

Platinum Pinot Blanc 2007, Pfalz, Germany Pinot Blanc is often found in Alsace and North East Italy (as Pinot Bianco). This is from Germany where you might also see it called Weissburgunder.

Reminiscent of ripe melon and golden delicious apples, this is mid-weight and has a good balance of freshness finishing off dry. Drink alongside shellfish. £5.99 Tesco 31

As soon as you enter Prego Aberdeen, you are filled with thoughts of deliciousness and your rumbling stomach will become even more impatient. The welcoming smells of fresh produce, and the old school style sweet jars aligning the shelves, are the perfect setting for a great lunch on the run.

Set your sights on

Prego Aberdeen was started in December 2008 by George Clark and Stuart Murray. After spending some time in Italy, where Stuart’s mums side of the family hails and from where inspiration came for the name Prego, they decided to return to Aberdeen and set up a lunch deli and ice-cream parlour. As well as having strong Italian roots to add to the ingredients, George has a wealth of experience in the catering and hospitality industry, finishing off the mix perfectly. The concept of Prego Aberdeen is to supply high quality service and food, but at high speed. It is by no means a fast food venue and you will find no pre-packaged sandwiches for sale, but they understand that for many, time is of the essence and so efficient service is essential. Prego Aberdeen is currently only satisfying the needs of the bustling crowds, but in the future plans to expand into the corporate lunch market. The unique selling point of this deli is definitely the ice cream parlour and sweet treats on offer. Available throughout all 32

“If you don’t have guts, don’t do it…” Hazel Arnold’s wise words of advice to anyone who fancies themselves as a property developer. Juggling a family and a job as a slimming consultant, it was 12 years ago when Hazel also began dabbling in property. In 2000, she bravely decided to take the plunge and launched Hazel Arnold Homes, which specialises in buying, renting and selling residential properties.

After successfully renovating a couple of one-bedroom flats in Aberdeen’s Rosemount, she progressed to a block of flats and eventually to houses, working alongside an architect to maximise her interior design flair. Hazel recently diversified into serviced apartments – an area she predicts will fuel the future growth of her business. Notching up a turnover last year of £750,000, Hazel Arnold Homes is going from strength to strength.

Working from her home in Queens Road, where her interior design talents are evident throughout, she attributes much of her business success to the people with whom she surrounds herself. “I’m very fortunate to have always had good people around me, in particular architects and tradesmen,” explained Hazel, an appreciative member of the BNI networking group. “Their workmanship is excellent and we have a mutual understanding that we won’t let each other down. That way, we can confidently recommend each other, and that’s been the key to my success. “People watch programmes like Property Ladder and say they’d love to do my job, but it’s not like the movies. You have to be prepared to hawk yourself up to the eyeballs to get funding and operate without sleep,” said a candid Hazel. “I’ve always been highly driven by what I do. In short, the risks are high, but the rewards are ample.” Email: hazelarnold@hotmail.com

We girls – and an ever increasing number of image-conscious men – all use cotton wool pads or cleansing wipes as part of our daily skincare regime. Yet, only an aspiring young North-east entrepreneur with a passion for all that’s eco-friendly would recognise the humble facial wipe as the launch pad for a new range of natural hair and skin care products. Meet Laura McComiskie, who founded Love the Planet after lamenting the waste caused by the cotton wool and disposable cleansing wipes she used daily to remove her make-up. Driven by her early success, Laura embarked on studies to give her the skills to manufacture environmentally friendly cosmetics suitable for use by vegetarians and vegans. She was soon producing tea tree and lavender cleanser, mandarin body wash, body butters and shower scrubs, eye bright gel and shampoo and conditioner – all made from natural, organic, raw ingredients. All free from parabens, mineral oils, sodium lauryl sulphate, artificial fragrances and colours, animal derivatives and genetically modified ingredients, the Love the Planet range is approved by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV) and the Vegan Society.

Northern Ireland Having grown up in the west of Scotland, I’m not alone in sensing that there’s something quintessentially familiar about the gritty ‘Titanic town’ of Belfast. It’s a city that knows my kind. Until now however, the lush environs, stunning landscapes and sleepy villages kneeling at the grand shipbuilding city’s feet had, for me, gone undiscovered. Having collected our hire car from Belfast International Airport, we headed west to the historic town of Enniskillen. The welcome at the Killyhevlin Hotel was warm, and our room fresh, contemporary, yet cosy. Idyllically set on the shores of tranquil Lough Erne, bordered by private grounds and gardens, the 4* Killyhevlin has recently undergone major refurbishment. 42

the Killyhevlin and weave our way through twisty farm roads to the Belle Isle Estate.

We made ourselves at home in the Beckett Suite, decorated in soothing coffee tones and with a comfortable lounge area and a generous, beautifully tiled bathroom.

I was to spend the day at the Belle Isle School of Cookery, which promised to introduce me to some of Ireland’s most innovative and exciting culinary concepts.

At our dinner table overlooking the grounds, my partner, Norman, opted for triangles of baked camembert, while I selected the platter of refreshing fruits. Each craving hearty fare, we plumped for the sweet, succulent, honey-smothered lamb shanks, accompanied by an abundance of fresh veg, and followed by a selection of pungent cheeses.

Entering a modern villa, I met my 10 fellow all-girl ‘students’ – and bubbly resident chef, Naseem. Each of us infected by the lovely Naseem’s enthusiasm for food and for Belle Isle, we got to work on red pepper and rosemary bread, learning how to knead and nurture the perfect loaf. Next was a spicy parsnip soup, impressive cabbage parcels stuffed with black bacon and chestnuts, delicious potato latkes, and a decadent dark chocolate mousse.

Returning to our suite, we opened the windows overlooking the waterbus stop outside and slept like logs. As my Saturday was to be packed as full as my Great Grandma Clarkson’s larder, we agreed to skip the tempting hot breakfast at

We took time out for lunch to appreciate our own soup and bread over wine in the school’s beautiful dining room. I savoured the fresh County Fermanagh air by strolling

through the stunning Belle Isle Estate, with its courtyard, castle, woodlands and upturned boats, to reflect on the stories of my fellow ‘students’ – each serious about food, but keen to hone their skills in a relaxing environment. The afternoon session was hosted by larger than life Irish-American chef, Joe Kelly, who tutored us in the art of the perfect beef Wellington.

Instead, we whiled away our Sunday afternoon by taking in Belfast’s Shaftesbury and Donegall Squares. Belfast wouldn’t be Belfast without a Guinness in the famous Crown Liquor, Saloon with its exquisite tile and glasswork and atmospheric snugs. We also savoured a light lunch and perfectly chilled Chablis at the delectable Merchant Hotel in Waring Street, where service was truly impeccable.

After recharging at the Killyhevlin, I returned, this time with Norman, to Belle Isle in the evening where we, the students, gathered around the grand table with partners to enjoy the meal prepared by our own fine hands – a heart-warming and gratifying end to the day, and a pleasure to be shared.

Shall we return to Northern Ireland? To be sure…

With time dwindling, regrettably we missed the opportunity to sample the delights of the divine Killyhevlin spa, or to tour the Giant’s Causeway, as we’d so hoped (it’s the perfect base from which to do so).

K9 HYDROTHERAPY

BEN KILNER

It’s a dog’s life > WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS

This issue’s assignment was looking good; the words hydrotherapy pool, spa and pampering suggested something a bit special – then the phrase, “your dog will love it!,” shattered my daydreams. So I packed the World’s Best Border Collie into the car for a trip to the K9 Hydrotherapy Centre at Findon. The centre provides both clinical and conditioning services for dogs in a purpose-built eight-metre hydrotherapy pool. Injured dogs recover up to 60% more quickly using individually designed hydrotherapy regimens.

CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

> WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT There’s no business like snow business for Winter Olympics hopeful, Ben Kilner.

Professional snow boarder, Ben (20), of Banchory, is competing in the British team of the World Cup circuit, qualifying for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. Having competed in only two of the seven World Cup qualifiers, super-fit Ben has already met half of the qualifications criteria required to fly the flag for Britain in next year’s Olympics. 46

The early success gave Ben’s confidence a tremendous boost, placing him in pole position to take on the world’s elite next year in his chosen sport. Ben’s snow boarding passion was ignited at the tender age of nine when mum, Jenny, booked lessons for him on the slopes of Glenshee. “It began as a leisure pursuit, and then I wanted more lessons,” remembers Ben, a former pupil of Banchory Academy. “Three years later, I travelled abroad for the first time, and experienced snow boarding in Austria. I then started competing in Scotland, and became hooked on the competitive side of the sport.”

The World Cup circuit will see him travelling the globe. Currently training with the six-strong Team GB in Japan, he will move on to New Zealand this summer and Switzerland in September. When at home, Ben participates in an RGU Highland Institute training and conditioning programme to ensure his fitness is at a peak. When the season ends in March, he hopes to receive confirmation that the world’s eyes will be upon him in the 2010 Winter Olympics. He’ll then be bound for whichever country offers the best training facilities at that time. Good luck, Ben. The North-east is rooting for you…

Chase the Collie’s favourite things are retrieving toys, rolling in fox poo and having a fuss made of her, so she’s happy to start with a brush out in the capable hands of Hazel, who has 35 years’ experience of making the North-east’s pampered pooches look their best. As Chase loves water, it’s no surprise she takes to the pool quite willingly, equipped with a floatation device and in the capable hands of Jo. After her swim, Chase is carried to the dog spa, which is basically a dog-sized Jacuzzi hot tub. This helps increase heart rate, blood flow and endorphins. Once she’s got used to the idea, it’s difficult to get her to come out again. The staff are hugely knowledgeable about canine physiology and anatomy, and work with several universities on

researching the benefits of hydrotherapy. Not only do the dogs love it, but it’s great exercise with just two 12-minute swims at maximum resistance equating to a 30-mile run. The centre also hosts some of Scotland’s elite show and agility dogs, who come in for conditioning in the pool and spa. There are plans to further augment its position as Scotland’s leading canine rehabilitation facility by adding a doggie playground and gym in the next few months. Sadly, they don’t offer gift vouchers. Chase would have bought one for the cat. K9 Hydrotherapy Centre Denside House, Hill of Findon Aberdeen AB12 4SL 01224 782717 www.k9hydrocentre.com

What goes around, comes around TATTOO ARTISTRY

JUNCTION

Up the Junction

> WORDS BY VICKY HARAZIM

Once marks of status, religion and rank, which have been found on bodies dating back to the fourth millennium BC, tattoos have been resurrected in modern culture as a fashion statement.

> WORDS BY NICOLA SMITH

1

2

There is never any ‘new’ fashion, merely the restoration of a lost art, a forgotten culture. The saying, ‘what goes around comes around’ springs to mind, yet not in a condescending manner. Fashion, it can be argued, is an archaeological dig; anything new has almost certainly been done before, those who create it are vibrant historians. Nothing more is true when it comes to tattoos. They have re-appropriated themselves into society as elusive, engaging and sensual modifications of the body. Seen for a long time as aggressive and distasteful, the sudden interest females have expressed has brought an unforeseen allure to the topic.

3

4

As a result, the artwork featured in some tattoos is awe-inspiring and intriguing, and the artists involved in making such a piece are often under-appreciated. Pausing for a moment, it is possible to glimpse at the sheer complexity of the process involved – from creating a design on paper to then transferring it to the skin with the precision of a surgeon. The body art many people receive is not only often beautiful, but also meaningful; to the onlooker it may hold a fleeting memory, or recollection. To the wearer it often means more – a loved one, a lost one, a departed one.

5

6

Some people disagree with the current situation regarding the tattoo phenomenon, yet it is more than a craze. It is a collective recollection of the past, bringing tattoos into the present, re-symbolising them and giving them new meaning in today’s hectic environment. Tattoos are back in vogue, refreshing, unique and symbolic – often, as in the world of fashion, to move forward we must step back. 52

DESIGNER FEATURE

DESIGNER FEATURE

> WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT If the striking, hand-printed wallpaper that hangs in some of the UK’s most fashionable lifestyle destinations was to display a designer label, it would bear the name of talented young North-east designer, Johanna Basford.

Textile designer, illustrator and screen printer, Johanna draws her inspiration from the flora and fauna that surrounded the rural fish farm on which she grew up near Ellon in Aberdeenshire. Combining the delicate and the ornate, Johanna’s intricate designs – predominantly in black and white – are initially drawn by hand, ensuring each piece is unique.

© Copyright Jannica Honey

Her boundless imagination for capturing the charm of nature has attracted the attention of the design world’s elite, earning her numerous accolades. In October last year, she scooped Channel 4’s 4Talent Wildcat Award, and the previous year clinched the Best Bedroom category in the coveted Elle Decoration Design Awards.

54

“Much of my work is inspired by botanics and wildlife,” explained Johanna, who graduated from the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee in 2005. “After graduating, I spent some time in London. Being a country girl, though, I found it difficult to make the transition to city living. The big city sapped me of

my creative energy.” In 2006, Johanna established her first studio at her parents’ home in Auchnagatt. A year later, she returned to Dundee and now works between the two. Johanna (25) has created designs for big names such as DKNY, Heals and the Crafts Council at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Among her more idiosyncratic commissions was the design of a hand printed label for limited edition BrewDog bottles.

Her intricate designs can also be seen in Fifi & Ally in Glasgow’s Princes Square, and Concrete Wardrobe in Edinburgh. She is now preparing to launch her new Midsummer Collection at the Indigo, Premier Vision trade show in Paris. Hidden Leaves are talking about their influences. Straight off the bat, bassist and musical encyclopedia, Stephen Keith has name-checked My Morning Jacket, Band of Horses, Ryan Adams, TV on the Radio and Ben Folds. Good start then. As he pauses for breath, the rest of the band chip in. Singer Greig’s heroes include Jeff Buckley, Mark Lanegan and Faith No More. Drummer Andrew is a fan of Too, while guitarist Chris Paterson opts for Pearl Jam as well as Brit bands such as Gomez and Blur. “Back in the 90’s,” he laments, “British bands were making popular and innovative music. Not like the indie bands today.” Rewind to a few days previously. It’s 10pm in The Tunnels, and a few moments from showtime. The lights are down. An expectant crowd has

gathered in front of the stage. Intro music is playing, and Hidden Leaves are feeling...a little unrehearsed. In their defence, it has been a busy few months: in October, original member and guitar player, Nick Sivek left to concentrate on electronica. So the band got busy rearranging their catalogue of songs to suit Chris as solo guitarist, while they continued working on new material...and prepared to record their new EP. A fine November opening slot in Moshulu aside, Hidden Leaves haven’t had much time to work on their live show, so I’m not sure what to expect. The first surprise comes in their second song. It’s called ‘Mr. E’, inspired by Greig’s son Elliot (himself named after songwriter Elliot Smith). Halfway through the song Chris steps to the front of the stage and unleashes a blisteringly exciting guitar solo. It’s impassioned, enthusiastic and – yes - innovative. The crowd goes wild.

Yet the highlight of their set is ‘Sunlight’. Their best song, it boasts clever interplay between guitar and vocals in the first half, and a stirring reprise in the second. Robertson is a talented and experienced singer whose voice has a clarity, power and pitch similar to that of Mike Patton or Perry Farrell. And when he gives his all at the end it’s formidable, stirring and the second genuinely thrilling moment of a very entertaining show. Sunlight is available on their Myspace page along with other songs and details of upcoming live dates. Hidden Leaves’ new EP, ‘No Dying In Machines’, is due out in March ’09. MOTORING

Mercedes-benz C220 Cdi SPORT > WORDS BY DAVID GILLANDERS

Doomed! We are all doomed! Well, that is what the media would have us all believe. You cannot pick up a newspaper, switch on the TV or radio without hearing about the credit crunch, or some other more depressing news. There is no doubt that the present economic climate affects us all and particularly the motor industry, but there has to be some positive happenings out there. My spirits were certainly lifted the other day when I was given the Mercedes C220 Cdi Sport to test. First impressions were excellent, all the controls fell easily to hand and I could connect my bluetooth telephone with no problem. Once on the main road the 2.2, 4-cylinder diesel, which produces 170 bhp and 58

torque of 295, was certainly well up to the task of making the vehicle feel very much at home on A and B roads. There is no doubt in my mind that Mercedes have produced this car to be a creditable challenge to the BMW 3 Series. One big talking point when ‘boys’ get together is how much bhp does their engine produce. Bhp is measured when an engine is being driven flat out – not much use in the current climate. Torque on the other hand, which I would describe simply as ‘passing power’, allows you to pull out behind a lorry doing around 50 mph and accelerate quickly to 70 mph, making the said manoeuvre quick and safe; therefore, the more passing power, the better the engine. The C220 certainly deserves a

double-take if you are in the market for a £30,000 motor car - I particularly like the Mercedes’ look, with its big grill and star. Not only is the engine powerful and smooth, it will return an excellent 46.3 mpg on the combined cycle. Standard equipment is excellent, with automatic climate control and safety items such as active headrests and knee airbags. The new C-class, I think, will please both existing Mercedes owners and bring some new people on board. Car kindly supplied by: John R. CAPE TOWN

> WORDS BY GILL BUYERS

With the doom and gloom of the economic climate it’s now even more important to take time out and with all the travel companies fighting to offer us the best deal, long haul travel is becoming even more available to us all. Cape Town, the Mother City, with its absolutely stunning setting, sophisticated feel and African roots has something for even the most worldly of travellers. The Atlantic seaboard dominates the coastline, Table Mountain stands proudly watching over the city and with the magnificent wine lands and rustic African wilderness there is something for everyone here. The city itself has a truly cosmopolitan feel with many bars and restaurants of different genres to tempt travellers from all over the world. However, it’s very close by that you find the townships which dominate the surrounding areas giving us a sharp reminder that poverty here is immense, AIDS and crime still cast a huge 60

shadow over Cape Town but that aside, in this relaxed compact city you are never far from something to captivate you.

The traditional Mount Nelson, the Nellie, is a 5 * luxury landmark in the heart of the city www.mountnelson.co.za On the waterfront the Cape Grace, a 5 * elegant hotel in the shape of a cruise liner, with spectacular views over the Waterfront and Table Mountain in the background www.capegrace.com Opening in April this year on the waterfront is The One and Only Resort Cape Town www.oneandonlyresorts.com

In the popular and trendy Camps Bay the Bay Hotel is chic and understated and offers fabulous views over the beach and promenade www.thebay.co.za

In the city, The Showroom is a luxury car showroom by day and a flamboyant restaurant by night. Best to sit upstairs looking down on the open kitchen where you get excellent views of the slick happenings. On the Waterfront, Belthazar really can’t be beaten hosting the title ‘Biggest Wine Bar in the World’ it has 250 wines by the glass and 600 by the bottle and the most fantastic selection of seafood and steaks to accompany them. A true winner! In the wine lands, La Petite Ferme for the fabulous food and valley views or Mont Rochelle, a boutique hotel with award winning restaurant Mange Tout.

Venture up Table Mountain in a cable car Take the revolving Cableway to the top 3,563ft. Appreciate the stunning views, hike around the many walks and admire the wildlife and habitat, best to go early in the morning or for the sunset. You could always try the walk down…or up if you prefer!!

Wine tasting in Franschoek 50 miles from Cape Town and you could be in France! Exceptional wines from farms which include Boshendal, La Motte, La Bri and Mont Rochelle. Known locally as the wine capital of South Africa it also houses eight of its finest restaurants.

Board a ferry to Robben Island A fascinating experience, you will be guided around Nelson Mandela’s former home of 18 years, now a museum, by an ex-prisoner.

See the penguins at Boulders beach Funny and rather smelly these penguins get their name from the donkey-like noise they make.

Cage dive with Great Whites Be dropped in a cage with only a snorkel and mask for companionship.

Over £4000 worth of gifts were collected from both members of the public and organisations around the region. World rugby legend is heading for Aberdeen ONE of the giants of world rugby is bound for Aberdeen to help one the city’s premier rugby clubs emerge from the ‘dark ages’. The legendary New Zealand captain Sean Fitzpatrick, who earned 92 Test caps for his country, will be guest speaker at Aberdeen Grammar Rugby Club’s glittering fund-raising dinner for more than 200 guests at the Marcliffe Hotel at Pitfodels on February 12 – primarily to raise cash for the £35,000 which the club needs for upgrading the current floodlighting at its Rubislaw ground. The four new lighting towers will bring a new dimension to facilities at Rubislaw which proves access to sport for more than 300 young men and women. The current floodlighting is less than 50% functional and presents problems in carrying out training exercises where highvisibility is required and introduces the risk of collision and injury. Among the organisers of the dinner are Frank Maughan, managing director of leading Aberdeen office design specialists, ASM, and his wife and fellow director Isobel, and Welsh-born Lia Murphy, marketing manager of Aberdeen law firm Aberdein, Considine & Co. ASM has long been a prominent sponsor of Aberdeen Grammar Rugby Club and Frank and Isobel’s son, Patrick, has played for the club at junior level. However, Frank does come in for some ribbing at times as he is a former pupil of Robert Gordon’s College, whose rugby team, Gordonians, is one of Scotland’s premier teams. The £35,000 floodlighting upgrade is phase one of a series of planned ground improvements at Rubislaw – including repairs to the grandstand seating. For further information about the dinner, contact Isobel on e-mail: imaughan@asm.co.uk 64

Matt hew Finnie

TIME OUT WITH...

Time out with. . . .

Matthew Finnie (36) began his career at the age of 19 as an apprentice in a retail jeweller in England before returning to Aberdeen. He has come a long way since then and is now a director of Finnies the Jeweller alongside his sister. Finnies was started 51years ago by his parents. Today it is a very successful manufacturing jeweller, making over 75% of the precious stone jewellery they retail, and is one of Scotland’s leading watch retailers with a staff of 36. What makes Matthew Finnie tick? Watches, definitely! Also being around good friends and ace colleagues, who I am lucky enough to work with on a daily basis. What in your career has made you most proud? Being voted third equal out of the top twelve watch buyers in Britain. The top five were all multiple jeweller watch buyers except for me. Having loyal customers, many of whom are now my friends, has also made me very proud. How do you enjoy your time out? I have a real passion for fast cars, so anything involving them. Eating out, in particular curries, and also enjoying a glass of red wine. Who or what has been your biggest inspiration? My parents: they taught me that we are born with nothing and everything afterwards is clear profit - there is no second chance to make a first impression. Finnies the Jeweller George Street, Aberdeen www.finnies.co.uk
