Apart from cuddling up on the couch, the only thing that endears me to these cold, dark winter nights is that they secretly satisfy my voyeuristic tendencies. As I pass by, I can’t help myself from taking a sneaky peak inside other people’s brightly lit living rooms and appraising their taste in decor. Being nosey is a prerequisite of a career in journalism - which is why I love the feature in this issue on the magnificent Tillycorthie Mansion. This winter, draw the curtains on nosey parkers like me and try your hand at David Littlewood’s pan fried Balmoral venison dish. The Milton’s award-winning chef has revealed his recipe for the ultimate in seasonal comfort food, which combines warming hotch potch potatoes with black pudding, shallots, and braised red cabbage with a cassis jus. Heaven! If you are a lover of fine food, enter our competitions and you could be enjoying an overnight stay with dinner and breakfast in the opulent Cabanel suite in the Carmelite, Aberdeen, or at Scotland’s Boutique Hotel of the Year 2007, The Bonham, in Edinburgh. There’s also the chance to win one of two annual membership passes to Curves, or a pair of designer sunglasses from Duncan and Todd. Glamorous party wear and accessories from Aberdeen’s most exclusive stores are showcased by local models on our fashion pages. And we bring you news of two new exciting fashion stores opening in the city. It’s your city and your magazine. Enjoy! Best wishes, Niki Tennant Editor

George Tester jointly runs the International Casino in Aberdeen’s Market Street, having moved the business from Queens Road a couple of years ago. Along with his business partner George Stewart, he is well known in the licensed trade. Since 1981 the pair have bought and run a number of hugely successful ventures in the city including Gabriels, Café ICI, Zig Zag nightclub, the Soda Fountain and Café Society. It was widely thought they had made the wrong decision to move their casino to its new premises in a less salubrious part of town but with that area about to undergo a major revamp it appears the astute businessmen are just one step ahead of the crowd. George Tester began his career as a painter at the age of 15 and when he was just 20 he launched his own construction firm. He is now 53 and one of the city’s most successful businessmen. Where will Trend find you having coffee? Carmelite Hotel Where do you love to lunch? My favourite place was Café Society on Queens Road (but I sold it!). Who’s your favourite designer? Versace

Who’s the Aberdonian you most admire and why? Any person that started off life with nothing and worked hard for what they got.

Who cuts your hair? Philip at Ishoka

What about the city makes you most proud? The people and the beautiful architectural buildings.

Where do you work out? I’ve gone to the gym five days a week, two hours a day, for 30 years. I now train at Cannons.

And what would you change? I would like to change people’s attitude towards people that have got off their a*** and worked hard! 09

UberSlick

The Uber range of products, which include UberSlick and UberSassy for men and women respectively, is a new concept in lifestyle grooming products. > REVIEW BY DAVID MACKIE

They have been launched to a phenomenally warm reception and have been endorsed by a number of high profile celebrities. Uber’s universal unisex appeal gives the stylish woman and image conscious man an opportunity to indulge themselves with this new range of innovative treatments, favoured by the likes of Denise Van Outen and Nick Moran. The range has been created with dedication to the philosophy of using the finest natural ingredients which are specially chosen and formulated to give the hair and skin a more vibrant and healthy look. With this in mind, I was given a number of the UberSlick products to sample. The shower gel gives you an invigorating kick start to the day, leaving you feeling energized and refreshed. The shampoo left my hair thoroughly cleansed and in good condition. I was also given the opportunity to use The Rehab styling mud and A-List Fix facial moisturizer. The styling mud, whilst being of a good consistency, just didn’t seem to give my hair appropriate hold to see me through the day. However, the facial moisturiser is the product that I would most highly recommend as it greatly hydrated the skin, had a refreshing fragrance and non-greasy texture. Overall, I would say that Uber products are worth trying out as they are made from sound natural ingredients that give noticeable results and I am sure this up and coming range will create a lasting impact within the hair and beauty industry. 10

Peter Mitchell

A man about town

The unmistakable Fedora hat has become something of a trademark for one of the North-east’s best known and loved writers. > WORDS BY PAULINE FRASER

And then, of course, add to that his favoured psychedelic jackets and Peter Mitchell certainly stands out from the crowd. I think it is fair to say that everybody knows Peter and he does his best to know everything about everyone! For the past six and half years, ‘Mitchell’s Diary’ in the Press & Journal has become something of an institution. However, since Peter turned 65-years-old in September he has gone into semi-retirement and is now only writing a weekly diary and a photo feature on a Saturday.

Peter said: “Doing the diary has been paradise. I was able to bring into play 40 years in the trade, my knowledge of the area and the people and as a result I got terrific feedback.” He recalls writing about an elderly Aberdeen lady living in Cyprus whom a reader had met whilst on holiday, and she had asked him to send her some ‘Aberdeen rowies’. After reading the diary, a baker from Forres hand delivered some of the local delicacies to Cyprus in special packaging to keep them fresh! He continues: “I was always looking for quirky, little stories; Off-beat stories that people would be talking about. “It was a tall order to get enough material for the

diary every day but my colleagues also gave me snippets of information.” Peter has spent the last 35 years of his career at the P&J. Prior to taking on the diary he was rugby correspondent and worked nightshift as a sub editor and latterly deputy chief sub editor. He says he just fell into journalism initially as a reporter at the Highland News followed by a stint as editor of the Caithness Courier. However, before embarking on his writing career Peter had a colourful life. Graduating with an MA from Edinburgh University in English and French, as well as a pass in Imperial and American history, he took a job teaching English and American history at a private school near New York. During his time in the States he also crossed America in a bus teaching biology. Returning to the UK he tried to become an actor in London. He even auditioned for the part of a Scottish lorry driver in ZCars in January 1966 but never succeeded. For months he worked as a theatre hand in the capital and got one acting part a non-speaking role as a porter! To survive as a budding actor he did odd jobs, including being a gardener for TV

presenter David Frost! Tiring of the bright lights he returned to Scotland to teach in Edinburgh before finally starting in newspapers. Peter says ‘Mitchell’s Diary’ has been the best job of his career and it has catapulted him into the public eye as a speaker at many North-east events. And everywhere Peter goes, his trademark Fedora follows. He has since lost six of them but now has a collection of various colours to match any outfit! Now in semi-retirement he claims to be discovering shopping, cooking and housework. So could the end be in sight for the popular diary? “I would hope that in the future someone would materialise that could carry on the tradition of a personal diary”, Peter said. But the local paper did once have a columnist called George Fraser who wrote until he was 101 - so there could be life in old Pedro yet!

After a fashion

DUNCAN AND TODD OPTICIANS

the clear choice... Duncan and Todd Opticians may have strong North East roots with its first practice opening up over 35 years ago, but todays it’s very much an international concern what with its array of trendy spectacles and sunglasses from designers across the globe. The Belmont Street practice in Aberdeen with its ideal city centre location, stylish exterior and interior could quite happily sit amongst its optical counterparts in the fashionable European cities of Paris and Milan where eyewear is ‘de rigueur’. The shop’s layout and interior represents a fusion of different influences. The shop floor is contemporary but classic with its mix of cool metal and light wood. The frames are displayed in a mix of wooden boxes and customised wrought iron frame displays. The reception area is small and intimate with the main aim to make patients feel at ease and be able to genuinely forge relationships with the personable staff. Manageress Irene Katrantzi and resident Optometrist Kathryn Simpson head the experienced team. Lesley Grazebrook caringly and accurately deals with all reception and administration duties and you are looked after with the respect you would anticipate from an independent opticians. The quality of service combined with the delivery of distinctive product ranges really enhances Duncan and Todd’s eyecare reputation. 20

ow do you open a salon? How do you start up a new venture with just an idea? How do you build up a team of highly trained salon professionals who work together like a family and all have great personalities? How do you compete when you are virtually an unknown? And what on earth do you call your salon?

H

Now in their fifth year, Biyoni is fairly certain that they’ve answered these questions, and quite a few more. For salon director, Andrew Gray, who, over the last 13 years has worked in some of the UK’s top salons, Biyoni began as an idea to provide the best possible standard of contemporary hair styling, combined with great service and expertise. The idea became a vision, the vision became a mission and the mission became Biyoni. Located in Aberdeen city centre, Biyoni is a salon based on the fundamentals of modern hair care and styling, right from the techniques they use to colour and condition the hair, through to the product ranges they stock. Andrew said, “The way we think can be illustrated by how we choose our products. We don’t pay attention to the glossy sales pitch. Before we make a choice on what to stock, we take a product home and test it, compare it and consider every aspect, from packaging to price. Only when we are satisfied it delivers good value do we put it on our shelves… as far as our styling service goes, your hairstyle is not for some magazine centrefold, it’s for real life. We live in the north of Scotland, a million miles away from Milan! What

you really want is a comfortable, wearable look that’s still cool, and that’s what we’re best at”. The business is going from strength to strength. In 2006, they opened a second salon in the picturesque town of Edzell. “We wanted to create an intimate, familiar environment, where people could feel relaxed and at home,” says Andrew. What’s more, to accommodate the Aberdeen salon’s ever increasing client base, Biyoni will soon be moving to larger premises. Andrew said, “I am delighted that after such a short time, we are already planning to expand.” The move will take place at the end of January, with doors re-opening at the start of February. “We have always tried to offer our clients a place they can come and chill out, have a coffee and a friendly chat, as well as receive a great service. My hope is that the move will allow us to further improve our customer service and provide an even more comfortable place for people to come and feel pampered.” In celebration of the new move, Biyoni will be holding a launch party in February for both existing and new clients, where the proceeds raised will be donated to Sue Ryder and Macmillan Cancer Relief. Further details of the relocation and launch will be released towards the end of the year. If you want to find out more about the Biyoni team or the service, visit their website at www.biyoni.com or pop into the salon for a chat. 23

COCKTAILS OF THE UNEXPECTED

GLUG OR PLUG

Decadent Drinking

Not that I need an excuse but if you do, then this season can be it. I’m not talking about silly dancing at the office party… I’m talking about drinking champagne. (trust me, it really works). It is complex and savoury with a biscuit-like richness and an intense fruit quality. One to be enjoyed at anytime. £23 the Wine Society.

© Portra Photographic Services

With so many styles available, it’s all about choosing one for the moment. So, whether that moment is in front of the fire in your new fluffy slippers or enjoying sophisticated canapés in your new Jimmy Choos, there is champagne for each occasion.

Oeil De Perdrix NV This hails from the more southerly area of the Cotes De Bar in the champagne region. The name translates as partridge eye and is the name given to the merest hint of pink that comes from the very gentle pressing of ripe pinot noir grapes. Bubbles are tiny and there’s a fruity, almost bramble- like aroma with savoury oaty biscuit notes. A nice way to welcome in Christmas morning with smoked salmon and croissants. Majestic Wine. £22.99

Words by Carol Brown of Wine Uncorked, Aberdeen, Member of the Association of Wine Educators and the Circle of Wine Writers, Certified Sherry Educator, 2006 UK Finalist European Champagne Ambassadors’ Awards.

Champagne Fleury Brut NV Champagne Fleury is from a small producer in the Cotes Du Bar and is made by following biodynamic principles which takes into account organic practices and cosmic forces

Ayala Rosé Majeur NV From the Grand Cru Village of Ay, this salmon pink raspberry scented champagne offers a great bubble factor with toasted brioche and a light but lingering red berry character. Bring on the lobster canapés. M&S £26.99 (on offer £21.99 until 31st December). carolwineuncork@aol.com www.wineeducators.com

COMPETITION DUNCAN AND TODD OPTICIANS

As I began to write this wee note to our readers I wasn’t long home from a week in sunnier climes and I have to admit that on my return to Aberdeen’s grey, wet weather I did ask myself why I choose to live here! But during the last couple of months, as I prepared for our second issue of Trend, I have discovered that the city’s folk go a long way towards extending a welcome which is warming on even the coldest of days.

the bread maker, Rosemount This artisan bakery and coffee house in the city’s bustling Rosemount has particular uniqueness - not only because of its fresh produce but also because of the special individuals at the heart of it. > WORDS BY PAULINE FRASER

Immediately as you walk into the bread maker on Rosemount Viaduct you are met with rows upon rows of freshly baked breads in any flavour, colour or type you desire. Couple this with the aroma of the warm bread, fresh coffee and a friendly smile and you just know this is a comforting place to visit. The bread maker has a modern yet continental feel and has lots to offer its clientele, many of whom have been firm regulars since it opened last December. In fact, one customer comes all the way from the other side of Aberdeen every day just for a coffee and a croissant - by his account the best croissant in town! And that is the icing on the cake for those behind the bread maker’s popular array of breads, pastries and home-made sweet treats. 28

You see, everything at this bakery is made daily by hand on the premises and served in the coffee house by the team of 23 trainees, who are all adults with learning disabilities. They are supported by a bakery manager, a baker, a further seven members of staff and volunteers. The bread maker works closely with the Camphill community at Bieldside and is the business arm of the Aberdeen Day Project, which is a local charity. The aim of the bakery and coffee house is to provide meaningful employment for adults with learning disabilities and allow them to learn new skills – not just how to work in a team but basic life skills, such as coming into work on time, being dressed correctly and also proper conduct in the workplace. Three of the bakery apprentices are currently out on work placements with local companies. Donald Anderson of the bread maker said: “Our success will be our loss…some of our apprentices will become employees here and some will find jobs within their work places

but we will still offer our support.” The apprentice bakers create 22 different breads per week, including some unique offerings like Moroccan fennel, blue cheese, sour dough and gluten free.

Our first ever magazine has received an enthusiastic welcome and people have even been quizzing me on what’s in the next issue.

There’s a variety of freshly made-toorder sandwiches, homemade soup and a fabulously mouth-watering and very tempting selection of cakes.

So I hope you are pleased with the results! I’ve had a fabulous time meeting some amazing people including the apprentice bakers featured in our Deli Focus, the funky Lou Couper who has been immensely brave to give up her career to follow a dream, the ever-enthusiastic George Tester and, of course, the ‘infamous’ Peter Mitchell!

This is well worth a visit and once you’ve had your first bite of the bread maker it’ll be hard to resist the temptation to return on a regular basis and join the ever growing appreciative clientele.

And then there is the majestic Tillycorthie Mansion and Gordon and Cynthia MacGregor who opened the doors of their home to Trend magazine.

And to add to the sweet taste of success – as a non-profit making organisation, all the ‘dough’ made here is literally kneaded back into the business ensuring that the bread maker is indeed the breadwinner!

A few notes from the last issue – I got so much hassle for some of my answers in the My Scene section – so I have to make special mention to the fabulous Alison and her crew at my hair salon and Donna who works wonders on my nails! Happy now girls?

Restaurant REVIEWS YAtAi Since opening its doors in August 2006, Aberdeen’s only Japanese restaurant Yatai has built up a loyal following and it’s easy to see why. Décor is minimalist and with seating for only around 20 people upstairs and limited counter seating downstairs, booking is always advisable. Chef/proprietor John Jones has spent seven years perfecting the art of Japanese cooking, which is all about using the best and freshest of ingredients. If, like me, your experience of Japanese dining is somewhat limited, help is on hand in the form of friendly, attentive staff who will help you separate your sashimi from your tempura. The drinks list includes a selection of wine, Japanese beer and sake but this being lunchtime, I opted for green tea. As we looked through the extensive menu, I nibbled on a bowl of wasabi peas, some more explosive than others. To really appreciate the range of food at Yatai, share a number of small dishes. Alternatively, do as we did and choose a tasting menu. This included the freshest sashimi in the form of prawn, swordfish and tuna. Gyu tataki - thinly sliced seared rib eye - was tender and complemented with a chilli sauce. Edamame - soy beans steamed and served simply in their pod with rock salt - are irresistible. 30

Traditional Japanese skewers included chicken yakitori, pumpkin, scallops with asparagus and delicious prawns. Large prawns are also given the tempura treatment, the batter so light and crisp. A range of sushi finished off the feast, my favourite being soft shell crab.

Try one of the homemade ice creams or sorbets. The apple and shiso sorbet was flavour-packed and so refreshing. It’s the only time that I’ve left a restaurant at lunchtime feeling positively virtuous. Yatai Japanese Restaurant 73-75 Skene Street, Aberdeen, AB10 1QD 01224 658521 www.yatai.co.uk

AtlAntis restAurAnt At the mAriner hotel The Mariner Hotel is a short hop from Aberdeen city centre on Great Western Road. Long established and in a mainly residential area, the welcome is warm and you feel instantly at home in the relaxed atmosphere. Decor is traditional with wood panelling and a bright conservatory area. The nautical theme continues in the name of the hotel’s restaurant -Atlantis. It’s no surprise, then, that fish and seafood are a key feature of the menu, although carnivores would not be disappointed with the fine selection of steaks. Both table d’hote and a la cárte menus are offered. Respectable Balmoral bread and sun dried tomato bread swiftly arrived and a blackboard displayed an array of tempting daily specials. The wine list offers around 50 choices, the whites chosen with seafood in mind and the reds predominantly from the classic regions of France. I plumped for a Sancerre - Domaine Vacheron 2005. Fresh and herby with the fragrance of elderflower, the sensation was crisp and dry with tangy overtones of passion fruit and lime and a refreshingly long finish (£26.00). From the specials, my other half went for a sauté of smoked mussels and king prawns in a pastry case (£6.50). The mussels were meaty and the combination of the creamy sauce worked very well. I went for a classic

combination of scallops and smoked bacon in a creamy sauce with the added bite of red peppers (£7.25). My main course was again a special, a robust dish of garlic butter king prawns atop a substantial piece of turbot (£16.00). The turbot was perfectly cooked and the king prawns juicy and bold. Across the table, monkfish and calamari had been given the tempura treatment. The batter was light and contrasted well with a yoghurt dip and interesting chilled coconut rice (£13.50). Desserts had a distinct autumnal feel, with a bramble mousse, berry cheese cake and apple fritters. The fritters were extremely moreish and the richness was cut with an excellent spiced ice cream. It was an extremely relaxing way to spend a Sunday evening. The Atlantis reminded me of a number of

restaurants we used to frequent during our time spent living in Guernsey and, as I get withdrawal symptoms for the island, it’s a very comforting alternative. Atlantis Restaurant at the Mariner Hotel, 349 Great Western Road Aberdeen AB10 6NW Tel 01224 588901 www.themarinerhotel.co.uk 31

Accidental businessman Malcolm MacNeil is the commercial brains behind one of the UK’s most respected hair and beauty salons. > WORDS BY NIKI TENNANT

Ishoka – Japanese for ‘one who creates styles’ – attends to the needs of no fewer than 1000 clients a week, and boasts a clutch of some of the most prestigious creative awards in the hairdressing industry. Yet, it’s Ishoka’s numerous business hairdressing accolades of which Malcolm is most proud. Manager Malcolm and stylists Kathryn Longmuir and Philip Bell were working together for an Aberdeen hairdressing salon in the mid-80s when the owner dropped the franchise, leaving the trio to become self-sufficient almost overnight. “We all had to pull together and work much harder, which in hindsight, was no bad thing,” reflected Malcolm. Four years later, however, there was an increasing sense of frustration about the rate at which the business was growing. It was then that Malcolm decided to take a week out to tour the country’s top salons to learn the secrets of their success. The experience gave him the confidence to enter the awards arena. When in 1987 he, Philip and Kathryn failed to reach a mutually amicable 34

In 1991, Ishoka’s second salon opened in Aberdeen’s Chapel Street, which the partners later sold when the 4500 sq ft Albyn hair and beauty salon opened its doors 14 years ago. Ishoka now employs 54 people. “It wasn’t the obvious location, and everyone said it was business suicide. But, the private terrace for parking was the secret of its success,” explained managing partner Malcolm, who has now set his sights on building additional premises in Westhill. “It’s exciting times. The main pillars of a successful financial strategy are tax planning, investment, retirement planning, and critical illness protection. Inheritance Tax (IHT) Not preparing for this is like asking your family to write a large cheque to Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC). There are three vital courses of action: • Ensure a will is written and planned correctly to save the maximum amount of tax • Transfer assets through the prudent use of lifetime gifts • Create an IHT efficient fund to enable beneficiaries of an estate to meet the tax liability without disturbing family wealth. WORDS BY PAULINE FRASER

For the past eight years the 27-year-old has been a web designer with a secret, burning desire to work in the fashion industry.

her own style emulates the legend a little, with her white blonde locks and black flicked eyeliner.

Bored with sitting in front of a computer screen she quit her day job and opened her own ladies’ boutique in The Green in Aberdeen. Lou said: “I just got fedup with my career and I realised my heart was not in web design anymore, I had lost my passion for it. This is something I have always wanted to do and my family and friends all told me just to go for it.”

But how does Lou describe her own image? “Eclectic, a bit retro, I love bright colours and the fitted 50’s pin-up look.” She continues: “I think I’ve got an eye for fashion and I love helping customers to choose clothing. I wanted to give the boutique a comfortable feel like a bedroom so people are more relaxed when they are trying stuff on.”

Coco Violet is a delightful addition to the cobbled square down from Union Street, in an area which is developing a reputation as the city’s equivalent to London’s Covent Garden or Edinburgh’s Grassmarket.

It took Lou just five months to transform from web designer to Miss Violet but she admits it’s taken a lot of hard work, long hours and a serious amount of enthusiasm. Prior to opening at the end of October she attended trade shows in London but next year she plans to visit Paris and London, as well as events in Europe, including one of the biggest in Barcelona.

Lou, who is originally from Inverurie, has created a boudoir-style sanctuary for her customers to browse through her collection of clothing, shoes, bags and accessories - all from independent designers. She said: “A lot of the items I take in are exclusive to the UK, let alone Scotland, so it just gives people in Aberdeen the opportunity to be unique in their style. I wanted Coco Violet to be classy, kitsch and funky so many of the pieces are 50’s inspired, retro and vintage with some modern twists too.” Lou has taken some of her inspiration from 50’s pin-up Marilyn Monroe and 36

But already Lou’s talent as a fashion spotter has resulted in one item in particular, flying out the door of Coco Violet - glitzy, jewelled, comfy pumps in a range of funky colours and styles which, wait for it girls ……… fold in half and fit neatly in even the teeniest of party bags. As well as picking up a coveted gold medal for Best Hotel Bedroom Design for its stunning Cabanel suite, and receiving a highly commended accolade in the Rising Star category of the Scottish Hotels of the Year Awards 2007, Carmelite was recently shortlisted in the Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce Northern Star Business Awards 2007. If it’s a romantic break you seek, the Carmelite’s Cabanel suite would be hard to beat. It has a central roll-top bath, a round bed and a shower room for two. As well as award-winning rooms with a distinct and soothing Japanese theme, the hotel is earning an excellent reputation for the quality of its cuisine. Carmelite, in Stirling Street, is the only restaurant in the city to be given a Gold Plate Award by Hotel Review Scotland. A critic for Scotland’s leading travel website also awarded the 64-seat

restaurant a Breakfast Rosette for its service, choice and fresh produce. Carmelite has been widely applauded for its quality and for breathing new life into the Green and harbour docks area of the city. Attention to detail includes a range of strawberry and pink champagne and raspberry jam, Scottish blossom honey and three-fruit marmalade, handmade by Edzell-based firm, Isabella’s Preserves. Delicious new desserts are also on the menu after a creative trainee chef added her own unique touch. Commis chef Stephanie Campbell, aged 19, has been cooking up a storm at Carmelite since she joined the kitchen a year ago. Her ginger and syrup cheesecake is now a staple on the menu, along with an apple and blueberry pie and brulee.

Carmelite operations director, David Trotter, is delighted to have brought local produce to the menu. “There is an abundance of fine food produced in and around Aberdeenshire and we are delighted to be in a position to let our guests enjoy them.” Diners can also sample a new brunch menu, which is now being served seven days a week from 11am to 5.30pm. The House has recently expanded its already extensive list of treatments - which ranges from aromatherapy massage to botox - to include a number specifically designed to cater to the needs of men. I went along for a manicure and the ‘traveller’s tonic’ - the ultimate indulgence for men. It begins with a back, neck, and shoulder massage using ESPA aromatherapy body oils, followed by a facial, which is expertly tailored to individual needs. I was introduced to my therapist, Rea, who was warm and friendly and soon made me feel at ease. After talking me through 40

the treatments which lay ahead, she showed me upstairs to the brightly lit manicure room. As a man, I’ve never paid much attention to my nails, but have to admit that I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. My hands were massaged and my cuticles were tidied up before I was treated to the highlight - a seaweed hand scrub which left my hands looking great and feeling uncharacteristically smooth. We then moved on to the treatment room - a bijou but pleasant space underplayed by mood lighting with the heady aroma of ESPA essential oils and candles. Before the massage commenced,

Rea introduced me to a number of the ESPA oils, allowing me to select my favourite fragrance to help enhance the experience. The massage was extremely relaxing, and Rea expertly paid particular attention to the tension areas that caused me most concern. The facial that followed was as much about a treatment for the skin as it was a continuation of the massage for the neck and shoulders. Various ESPA products were used to cleanse and tone the skin. A hair and face mask was applied and, while this was at work, I was treated to a stress-busting scalp massage. Overall, I was really impressed with the service I received at The House. The therapist’s in-depth knowledge of the products she was using made me feel in safe hands. Clearly, a lot of thought has gone into how to cater for men’s needs, and I went away promising myself to make a return visit on a regular basis. In the 80s and 90s, we were more likely to be spending our cash in High Street fashion stores, rather than in B&Q and Ikea. In the noughties, with the nation’s preoccupation with property enhancement, development and investment, it is hardly surprising that the fashion houses are turning their attention to the interior design/home market to cash in on our obsession. In High Street stores like Debenhams, many designers - including Jasper Conran, John Rochas and Betty Jackson are putting their names to home products. Paul Smith has a range of furniture he designed with Cappellini and an upholstery fabric reminiscent of his distinctive style.

Street by Jasper Conran. It consists of flannels, pinstripes, checks and spots in elegant, subtle tones contrasted against some zingy silks, all inspired by Saville Row tailoring and highly reflective of the current trend in fashion and interiors. Designers Guild also distributes Ralph Lauren’s timeless collection of wallpapers and fabrics. A new favourite of mine is Missoni, whose signature zigzags and stripes in diverse combinations of shades, textures and patterns, encompass the fusion of fashion and interior design. The label’s designs adapt equally as well to its sought-after clothes as to its range of furnishing fabrics, rugs, lampshades etc. And Edinburgh and Kuwait are about to welcome two new Hotel Missoni lifestyle hotels.

At Ambiance, we have used pieces from Armani Casa and the Fendi home collection for clients. In more specialised interior design studios, we are now seeing more designer names appearing in the new collections.

Colours and textures evident in fashion today are reflected in interior design and vice versa. As we choose our clothes to express our individuality, so too should we when creating a room for our home. So, don’t just follow everything you watch on television. Be creative.

I think the editor is trying to kill me. Firstly, by offering an opportunity to learn to scuba dive when I can’t swim, and then lining me up to go firewalking. Firewalking - that’s basically going for a stroll through a barbecue. We all know what happens to sausages. With three hours to go, I’m sitting in a room with around 30 people, mainly female, mainly young, and not exhibiting any outward signs of insanity. It’s probably a good place to meet girls, provided you don’t mind them slightly charred. They’re all here to raise funds for the Aberdeen branch of MacMillan Cancer Support, and many have touching personal reasons for taking part. We go outside to help light the fire. There’s hand-holding and silent confrontation of fears. We’ve all written goals or wishes on paper and consign them to the flames. This symbolic act of release is somewhat spoiled by Aberdeen’s Calvinistic weather, which puts the fire out. Twice. Back inside, we’re helped to raise our energy levels above that of the fire through a series of games and activities. It’s like a nursery class where the toddlers have had too much sugar and have broken into the music cupboard.

Now that we’re all hyped up, we return to the fire at Queen’s Links, percussion instruments in hand. The strip of fire is still burning quite brightly, and is beaten down with spades and forks. Although it’s only about 2ft wide and maybe 8ft long, mentally it seems a bit bigger, like a river of smoking embers and flames. We remove our shoes and socks, and start up the music again. The fire is somewhere between 600 and 12000C. One brave soul takes her first step and crosses the pit quickly. Now that we know it can be done, more of us take the plunge. One girl veers off half way along the pit. It’s my turn - and I know all I have to do is walk quickly and lightly in a straight line. I tell myself that a two-year-old could master it. The music rises, and I’m no longer conscious of the crowds. I slip my jacket off and move forward. I can barely feel my freezing feet. I take my first step and keep going. The pit is sort of crunchy under my feet, and although it’s warm, it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. A few steps, and I’m out the other side, dunking my feet into a basin of water to remove cinders that have stuck to my toes. I appear to be intact, there’s no smoke coming up from my feet, and I don’t have any burns,

Alison puts her best foot forward.

just a tiny blister on one toe. Then it dawns on me, and a sort of euphoria sweeps over me. I can walk through fire. The firewalk raised in excess of £8000 for MacMillan Cancer Support. To find out how you can help, visit www.macmillan.org.uk and follow the links to events for North of Scotland.

There is no time like the present an insight into property investment BY KEVIN DAVIDSON Principal Partner of K.W.A.D Throughout the North-east, demand for homes has outstripped supply for many years. This, combined with a steady rise in house prices, has meant that homes have been selling very quickly and for huge sums of money; ideal for those with a little extra cash to invest. But now with experts warning that as demand decreases, house prices are levelling - is investing in a buy-to-let property still such a good idea? Without a doubt, yes.

Pounding the streets of New York

As far as physical and emotional challenges go, the New York Marathon is probably the best thing you could ever do.

WORDS BY PAULINE FRASER

Jim (front centre) with the other five team members.

Of the 100,000 people who took part in the New York Marathon last month, 39,000 crossed the finish line and among them was Aberdeen businessman Jim Mitchell. It was the third time he had entered the world’s largest marathon but this time he felt mentally prepared for the challenge which lay ahead.

Consider two things; the first of which is that with fewer buyers out there, investors do not have to worry so much about paying over the odds to secure the property of their choice. Secondly, as a result of many people being unable to afford the leap onto the property ladder, combined with an influx of Eastern European workers, the North-east rental market has grown and over the last year rental prices have reached an all time high therefore producing good returns for buy-to-let investors.

Jim, who is managing director of local construction firm JKM, has completed eight marathons in total but says the vibrant city of New York made it a fabulous experience and the best marathon he had ever done.

A recent change to capital gains tax rates – now a flat rate of 18% - has meant that investing in property is also appealing from this point of view as any gains made are taxed at the new reduced rate as opposed to the previous rates which were based on one’s own tax bracket.

The team pounded the streets and five boroughs of New York to complete 26.2 miles and Jim succeeded in achieving a personal best time of 3.39.00 hours. The last 10K was the toughest but he had no thoughts at all of giving up as the estimated two million spectators cheered him on.

If you are a potential buy-to-let investor, there is no time like the present to get involved.

He said: “The challenge of completing such a fabulous marathon is a wonderful opportunity and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience albeit not necessarily the pain of the last few miles! Four of us had personal best times and crossing the finish line knowing that our endeavours have helped local children made the day complete.”

TOP 10 HEALTH TIPS FOR MEN Whether you’re bang in the middle of the festive celebrations, or experiencing the January health hangover, take on board this advice: THINK CALORIES - well, that’s predictable! But a full on Christmas lunch, with all the trimmings will come in at well over 2,000 calories so you would have to walk briskly for over six hours to burn that lot off!

and don’t head off alone. Better to be safe than sorry.

THINK ALCOHOL - well, see item 1. For a start, a pint of beer comes in at about 350 calories. Consume no more than 28 units a week (half pint or pub nip=1 unit) or the liver starts getting damaged. Don’t drink for four days every week.

THINK RELATIONSHIPS December and January can be stressful - but work on your long-term relationship. Surveys show that married guys are healthier and get better jobs.

THINK SMOKING - the evidence is beyond doubt. Heart, lungs, cancers - stop it now! THINK HYDRATION - the benefits are now obvious on this one. Drink a few extra glasses of filtered water every day.

THINK SEXUAL HEALTH always use a condom for these nights of fun. Take your responsibility seriously.

THINK RELAXATION - learn to relax. Even five minutes of decent relaxation each day can help. It needs to be learned. Work on it! THINK SUCCESS - identify with success either through work or sport. It boosts testosterone levels and that will bring its own benefits!

THINK EXERCISE - it benefits the heart, the lungs and the increased oxygen uptake boosts the brain.

So there you go - relatively simple advice that deep down, we all know.

THINK SAFETY - don’t drink and drive at all. Also,if you are out, always stay in safe company

WORDS BY PAULINE FRASER

Nestled in trees near the Aberdeenshire hamlet of Udny, it is home to Gordon and Cynthia MacGregor and their family, who have painstakingly restored it back to its original glory. The couple have been working on the mansion, which has around 50 rooms and 80 acres of land, for seven years after buying it in 1991. 46

At the time it had been split into three separate apartments - the main house, the lower west wing and the upper west wing, and the couple bought each part individually so they could renovate it back into one impressive house. Cynthia said: “We had rented one of the wings for two years whilst we were looking for something to buy. I had wanted a nice Georgian house but we couldn’t find

one and the two boys were settled here so we bought the main house.” The ceilings were damaged and a lot of water was coming in so the only way to approach it was to buy it as a whole and tackle it as one project. Cynthia, whose family is in the building trade, project managed the whole renovation and everything that had to be done was on a huge scale. She admits they used to refer to it as Castle Fawlty in the initial stages! “It’s been wonderful to see the house change over the years. It was not a daunting experience - it was tackled with enthusiasm, blood, sweat, laughter and occasional tears,” said Cynthia.

One of the most breath-taking features of the house is the imposing glass courtyard at the centre of the mansion, which is filled with ornamental antique furniture, large towering assortments of plants and a central grass area - and all indoors! The house was built in 1911 by James Duncan who was from a family of farm labourers. When he was 14 years of age he went to Bolivia to work in the tin mines but was also educated in engineering. He had a stroke of luck years later when he was gambling one night and won a disused tin mine which had been flooded. But using his engineering skills he got the mine pumped out and very quickly afterwards he struck gold!

It was then that he returned to the North-east, bought around 600 acres of land and built Tillycorthie. Gordon said: “When they were building the house they apparently drove their Bentley round in a horseshoe shape to create the turning area which is the covered courtyard and the house was built around this. It is said to have been created to allow his wife to be driven inside with her shopping!” The couple, who are involved in a number of charities, including Children 1st and F.O.P (Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva), often use their house for fundraising parties and love entertaining friends and family.

They are still not quite finished the renovations with a few rooms still to be decorated but Gordon is confident 2008 will see the completion. However, after all the hard work Cynthia says she can’t see them being here forever as they have always planned to move abroad. “Tilly is just too big for a part-time home and too big an upkeep. My business head thinks of it as bricks and mortar but then in my heart I have complete love and passion for this house. “Renovating it back to its original glory has really been an experience of a lifetime and, most importantly, it has saved Tillycorthie and preserved it for the future.” 47

BOOK REVIEWS

Soul Funkin’ Hot REVIEW With a name like Soul Funkin’ Hot the audience at the annual Crimestoppers event at the Marcliffe at Pitfodels knew not to expect any ordinary rhythm and blues band.

> WORDS BY REBECCA CURRAN I was amazed when I met the band before the show and was greeted by a total of 13 members! My initial concern was how could they all perform together on one stage without it turning into a battle over the microphone? But I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There are four vocalists, a four-piece brass band, a drummer, lead and bass guitarists and a keyboard – quite a list, but once on stage the set-up is more than impressive and not at all overwhelming, as I had first thought it might be.

They were formed just over a year ago with the majority of the members having left other local band ‘Souled Asylum’. All of them also have what they call ‘normal’ jobs and the time spent rehearsing and performing is purely a hobby.

This dedication shines through when you see the band on stage as there is a definite element of fun in the show. Their upbeat and energetic performance is truly contagious and really gets the crowd on their feet. On the night Soul Funkin’ Hot performed at the Marcliffe there was a real mix of soul sounds, old and new. They take pride in being able to ‘funk’ up original soul songs and believe they give a performance that other bands can only aspire to. One song which stood out was the group’s superb rendition of Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect.’ The three female vocalists achieved flawless choreography which along with fantastic voices, seemed to come as natural to them as the air they breathe!

Another favourite was ‘Carwash’, originally released by Rose Royce in 1976. The few guests that didn’t get up to this classic were toe-tapping and clapping their hands and from then onwards the entire room seemed captivated by these 13 vibrant and completely likeable characters. Without reeling off their entire running order, the performance also included hits by the Jackson Five, Ray Charles and Kool and the Gang – to name but a few - each song suitably ‘funked’ up and made their own. Soul Funkin’ Hot are certainly breathing life back into soul music and reviving songs which are decades old. They are fresh, funky and fashionable and very easy to enjoy. Each member of the band has a quiet confidence and charisma and it is clear a lot of time and effort goes into rehearsing every week, which can’t be easy when they all have full time jobs! There's been a surge of interest in Formula One recently; the arrival of Lewis Hamilton has turned a lot of new fans onto the sport. Hopefully, they'll pick up this book by one of the true greats of motorsport. This entertaining autobiography covers Jackie's eventful career, from triple world champion and safety campaigner, to his stint as head of the Stewart F1 team. An absorbing read for any motorsport fan, the book also comes with a DVD with some of the pivotal moments of Jackie's career. Review by Peter Sim

Boy gets girl pregnant, boy talks to poster, poster talks to boy! Much more than the usual 'boy/girl' story, this is a fabulously funny and extremely insightful tale that all teenagers (especially boys) should read. In fact, this book should be compulsory reading in schools, and if prescribed on the NHS it could solve the teenage pregnancy problem in one go. I loved this book, it was fantastic, fantastic, fantastic! Review by Joan Paterson

Gerard DeGroot A compelling book that explodes many of the myths which have surrounded the American space programme for nearly 50 years. DeGroot apparently started this book with the intention of celebrating the achievements of the U.S. space programme. However, he found his research revealed the ugly truth behind the highly polished surface. This is a tale of cynics, scheming politicians and greedy corporations who played on the fear of supposed communist supremacy to gain huge power - and profits - at the expense of the American public. WINNING IS NOT ENOUGH

The rich tapestry of Scotland's history is vividly brought to life in this wonderful new book, which gathers together 2,000 years of eye-witness accounts of the key moments of our nation's tumultuous story. It is fascinating reading, incorporating the words and thoughts of the politicians, heroes, and common people as they describe the events of their day, without it ever becoming dull. It is easy to open at any page and find an engaging tale being told. I cannot recommend this title highly enough. Review by Scott Thomson

Simply because the team’s creative approach combines the natural beauty of flowers with carefully chosen, innovative touches such as fruit, jewels, feathers and jazzy wires to produce a fusion of beautiful results. The florists excel at creating floral sensory experiences, not only in creating the bridal bouquets but also in their table and room arrangements. With the choice of flowers being such a highly personal and significant element

in every bride’s wedding plans, the girls at Eden Creative Florists encourage them to come in for a chat to discuss their preferences and ideas. Eden Creative Florists regularly supply the flowers for weddings in many of the region’s most prestigious locations. When Aberdeen husband and wife team Emily and Alan MacDougall agreed to put their careers on ice, they meant it - quite literally.

If you have a love of cars and driving then your wheels will be your pride and joy. So what better forum to show off your dream car than the annual Cannonball rally?

Tundra Ice can produce a drinks luge to liven up parties, and can even design an entire bar in ice for the ultimate way to chill drinks. “People are fascinated by the whole concept of ice sculptures,” said Emily, whose firm’s polar bears ice figures attracted considerable attention during this years Offshore Europe week.

“They are all produced at very low temperatures and melt by only a quarter of an inch per hour. To maintain their appeal, we fit table top designs with hidden drip trays. Even a small sculpture will last several hours, which ensures that guests are given ample opportunity to admire them.”

Aberdeen man Bill Barclay took his Chrysler 300C to this year’s Cannonball 8000 on a drive of a lifetime from London to Croatia, via Brussels and Prague. His was one of the 120 vehicles in the fifth annual rally, which attracted Supercars, such as Jaguars, Aston Martins and Lamborghinis, as well as novelty entries including a fire engine! Bill, who is MD of oil services firm Cammach Group, spent around £7,000 enhancing his everyday car with Lamborghini-style doors, 22” wheels, modified exhaust, locomotive horns and eyecatching stickers to embellish the bodywork. Bill said: “The car got a lot of attention and the modifications gave it the head turning factor. And the wheels, in particular, really grabbed attention.” 52

Cannonball’s catchphrase is “It’s not a race – it’s a lifestyle” and the emphasis on the rally is fun, adventure and camaraderie. This year’s run was a little longer than planned after the German authorities decided at the last minute not to allow Cannonball 8000 drivers to cross the country. Bill said it was disappointing but they still drove on some superb roads with spectacular scenery. He said: “If you like driving and have a good car – drive the continent and the Eastern block as it really is a new experience. For any motoring enthusiast, the Cannonball is well worth it.” www.cannonball8000.com

Tundra Ice – which can deliver from York to the north of Scotland – is the only company in the North-east to design and manufacture ice sculptures. A year ago, the pair set up ice sculpture company, Tundra Ice, after watching the trend gain popularity in London and in the US. With a Masters degree in Entrepreneurship, Emily followed her husband Alan into the hospitality industry. But recognising that they had complementary skills and talents, they harboured an ambition to work together. It was then that they identified a niche in the Scottish market for the art of ice sculpting, and Tundra Ice was born. The MacDougall’s opened a factory at Aberdeen harbour, where ice sculptures are produced using three techniques:

hand carving, computer aided design and casting. Although initially pitched at the weddings market, the corporate sector has embraced the ice sculpting concept with enthusiasm and it now accounts for the largest slice of Tundra Ice’s commissions. Table top sculptures – such as a Cinderella slipper that doubles as a champagne bucket – start at £25, with prices ranging to £1000s for elaborate bespoke designs, like a full-sized sports car featuring all of the vehicle’s accessories in intricate detail. Brides and grooms frequently commission ice sculptures bearing their new shared

Emily – who concentrates on sales and marketing – and Alan - whose skills lie in creative technique and business strategy – are now targeting the drinks market in a bid to grow their business. “Because we have opposite skills, we work very well together and rarely clash,” said Emily, whose firm also supplies champagne and chocolate fountains. “Alan’s been teaching me about carving and I’m really enjoying it. I even managed to make him a heart!” Tundra Ice Ltd, 18 James Street, Aberdeen Tel: 01224 636098 email: info@tundraice.com www.tundraice.com 53
