EDITOR’S ETCHINGS

Editor’s welcome It was an evening of glitz and glamour that wouldn’t have looked out of place in Hollywood when Aberdeen’s lifestyle elite gathered for the Trend Life with Style Awards ceremony. See our record of the evening in our popular society section, and turn to page 48 to find out who picked up the coveted gongs. The event brought into sharp focus how Aberdeen is now synonymous with style. on the ball > words by scot thomPson

The gym ball - invented in 1963 as the ‘Swiss Ball,’ - was initially used to rehabilitate hospital patients with poor posture and weak core muscles. In the 1980s, it became popular in North America as a way to tone and sculpt the muscles of the abdomen. When purchasing the gym ball today, it is important to get the right size. Balls range from 45-75cm in diameter, so choose one in proportion to your height, not weight. 10

The balls are all designed to take over 100kg, so don’t worry about your weight unless you are over 130kg. (Each ball comes with safety advice if you are still concerned.) Gym balls are effective for weight training, abdominal and core work as well as stretching. They are cheap, easy to transport and can be used at home, work or in the gym. Be warned, though. Many people purchase them on impulse and soon give up after

struggling to balance on them!

TREND RECOMMENDS

Trend recommends... make-up Artist Rae has worked internationally with Estée Lauder and mAC and nationally with Laura mercier at events including London fashion week. Here Rae recommends her favourite products to care for your delicate eye area: Rae Mathieson Tip 1 – Use eye make-up remover. Although you may find that your face cleanser is great for removing most of your make-up, the skin around your eyes is very delicate, and it is best to use an eye makeup remover. Soak a cotton pad in the remover and gently apply it to your eyes, (you may need to soak the eyes for a few seconds if wearing waterproof make-up) use gentle sweeping motions, making sure that you do not use too much to avoid having it drip into your eyes. Eye make up remover Lancôme Bi Facial (£18.00) Even hard to shift waterproof eye make up can’t escape the power of this effective yet gentle cleanser. Voted best eye make up remover by in style’s best beauty buys 2009. Tip 2 – Only use eye cream on the eye area, don’t be tempted to use your facial moisturiser! Apply a grain of rice sized amount, dot the eye cream along the edge of the bone surrounding the eye using your ring finger (this finger will exert the least amount of pressure).

Gently pat the cream into the skin starting with the inner corner of your eye and towards the outer corner. Luxury Eye Crème Estée Lauder Re-nutrive ultimate youth eye cream (£73.40) Voted ‘Best eye Crème’ in the 2008 online golden compact awards this revolutionary eye crème helps prolong the youthful appearance of skin around the eyes. Eye De-puffer Garnier Nutritionist Caffeine eye roller (£9.99) Forget your morning coffee, the only caffeine fix you’ll need is this fast acting eye treatment that de-puffs, smoothes and boosts circulation. Innovative at home treatment estée Lauder Perfectionist Power patch (£39.15) Highly targeted eye patch dramatically reduces the look of lines and wrinkles in just 20 minutes – perfect for an instant lift! www.raemathieson.com 11

meeting of minds > words by by niKi tEnnant

It was a meeting of minds when, as mature students at the University of Aberdeen, Ally Gardner Bellany and Dervla Massey formed a firm friendship. By amalgamating Dervla’s corporate background and Ally’s experience of working with people with special needs, it struck the women that they had the basis for a business that had always been their destiny. “Throughout each of our working lives, people had been coming to us in confidence, and we were both the keeper of many secrets,” explained Ally. After extensive research, they achieved International Coach Federation 22

accreditation. And so, Stepping Stones Life Coaching was born. “The service we offer allows someone to invest in themselves,” explained Dervla. “If someone is feeling stuck in a relationship or career, they lose a sense of direction. They already know the answer – but need insightful and intuitive questioning to help them make the jigsaw fit.” Ally or Dervla will meet a client over a coffee in a relaxed atmosphere to help them believe in themselves again – and empower them to realise their goals, live with potential and follow dreams.

CHEF FOCUS

The common misconception of Yatai as a purely sushi orientated restaurant is misguided. They offer the full spectrum of Japanese cuisine. Yatai has a selection of raw, grilled, fried or steamed. What’s your food heaven and your food hell? Food heaven: Live oysters in Tsukiji at 6am. Food hell: supermarket sushi.

What's the most bizarre request you've received from a diner? To grill sashimi! Which dish would you choose as your last supper? Badly prepared fugu.(pufferfish). If you are going to go anyway, you might as well eat something delicious that will kill you in four minutes!

Kaisen Nabe Reality TV cook-offs - do they float your melon boat, or get on your goats cheese?! They’re good because they show budding chefs that good food is something that can be achieved at home. What's the most overrated dish/ ingredient commonly served in today's restaurants? The most overrated ingredient in my opinion is salt and pepper! Of your friends and family, who is the best amateur chef and why? Hana Yoshizawa. She is only seven and getting better than her mum – a professional Japanese chef at Yatai

A one pot dish containing seafood, vegetables and noodles. The nabe is best cooked at table in a cast iron pot on a portable gas hob. Japanese konbu seaweed Japanese red miso paste Korean chilli miso paste (Authentic ingredients available from Matthews Chinese Supermarket on Causeway End) Preparation 1 Blend the miso together in a ratio of 1 chilli miso to 2 red miso. Dissolve in water in a saucepan on the heat to make stock. 2 Chop the vegetables and fish into bite sized pieces. 3 Cook the udon noodles in boiling water for a few minutes, cool under cold running water and drain. 4 Arrange vegetables, tofu, noodles and seafood on a large platter and bring to table. 5 Put the miso stock and konbu into a cast iron pot on the portable gas hob and simmer. 6 Everybody can add and cook what they like. Spring onions and chilli oil can be served on the side. When all the ingredients have been eaten; cooked rice can be added to the remaining stock to make a delicious soup.

Restaurant REVIEWS dinner review: The Silver Darling A former customs house, the rooftop conservatory style Silver Darling Restaurant offers sweeping panoramic views along Aberdeen beach and across the busy harbour entrance and on one of the hottest days of the year so far the interior was airy and bright. Although I’ve lived in Aberdeen for 18 years I have to admit that this was the first time that I’ve crossed the threshold of this longestablished venue. The innovative, well thought-out combinations of ingredients are an inspiration to cooks like me who struggle to do anything other than grill fish. Whilst seafood dominates this harbour side establishment, a ‘meat of the moment’ is available. 28

All dishes were attractively presented. My starter of two plump fried langoustine with beetroot, celeriac risotto, lettuce fondue and langoustine bisque was a kaleidoscope of colours. Across the table, the ‘starter of the moment’, a delicate ‘home tea smoked’ sea trout came with the classic partnership of asparagus and hollandaise. The ‘catch of the moment’ was a comforting red wine poached fillet of turbot with a pea and pancetta fricassee topped with discs of black and white pudding. I really enjoyed to the vibrancy of Mediterranean flavours of the steamed fillet of wild sea bass on a bed of red pesto couscous, fennel piccadillos in basil, olive oil and black olive coulis.

A light strawberry and mint panacotta was a summer in a glass finale. Lunch at the Silver Darling is a relaxed, unhurried affair. It would be easy to while away a couple of hours, sharing a bottle of wine watching the ships sail by. At £15.50 for two courses and £19.50 for three the lunch menu is good value. I promise not to leave it another 18 years before my next visit! Silver Darling Restaurant Porca Quay Aberdeen, AB11 5DQ T: 01224 576229 www.silverdarlingrestaurant.co.uk

RESTAURANT REVIEWS

dinner review: The City On Netherkirkgate and close to shops, offices, the cinema and music venues, the City Café Bar and Restaurant spans three floors which include conference space on the 3rd level and the café bar on the ground floor. The first floor restaurant is decked out with dark wood floors and vibrant Mediterranean shades. Try and bag one of the comfy booths. There’s even a balcony for those warmer evenings. The menu flits from Scotland, with smoked salmon, deep fried haddock and haggis, on to Asia and Italy for curry, stir fry and pasta. Knowing that the meats on the menu came from Herds butchers in Rosemount was a good enough reason to put me in a steak mood; this then lead me to the red section of the wine list and a bottle of Chateau

Carignan Premiere Cotes De Bordeaux, Merlot, £29.95. Dominated with notes of bramble, plum and cigar box it was mellow to take us through the meal.

The beef stir fry again was really tender and its glossy sauce had a good chilli kick to it (£9.95).

The haggis came in the form of a wanton and its unlikely sounding accompaniment of turnip and maple cream worked really well, the sweetness complementing the spiciness of the haggis (£5.50). My starter of smoked chicken and mango salad was a light opening (£5.50).

I can’t resist an old school pudding. The crumble of the day was apple with just the right ratio of topping to fruit and fragranced with cinnamon. Across the table, the cheese cake fan was enjoying the light Champagne and strawberry cheese cake. (Both £4.50) Good food, comfy surroundings with prompt and friendly service made for a relaxing evening.

My 8oz, 21 day aged sirloin steak came with its own jug of creamy pepper sauce and was cooked perfectly - medium as requested, tender and full of flavour. It came with good chips and a bowl of very ‘moreish’ carrots, red onions and peppers, all coated in a cheesy sauce. (£16.95).

DELI REVIEW

Ooo, la, la... It's Terroir ‘Terroir’ (pronounced tehr-wahr), a French term used in wine appreciation to describe the special characteristics of geography that give a wine its character and individuality. In a similar way, it is a collection of special characteristics that give Terroir Delicatessen in Aberdeen its character and individuality. Terroir Delicatessen has been catering for local foodies since July 2001, offering interesting and tasty products not often found on the shelves of the local supermarket. Originally located in Thistle Street for the last eight years, Terroir has recently expanded and relocated to Cults. The deli is owned and run by Juliette Burnside. Juliette is French and hails from Paris, but has been based in Aberdeen for many years. As anyone who has been to France will know, food is an incredibly serious business there and Juliette’s passion for it certainly hasn’t diminished! As a former chef, she is on hand to offer advice on all the products and how best to cook or present them. The new deli now has a seating area which is proving very popular with people stopping by throughout the day, for morning coffee, soup and a sandwich at lunch, or afternoon tea and delicious homemade cakes. As always Terroir are still selling all the fantastic products they are so well known for such as, the vast range of cheese, meat, chorizo, pâté, Mediterranean olives, olive oils, locally baked Crannach bread, local free rang eggs and home baking. There is also a great selection of products which are ‘typique francais’ such as foie gras, snails and rillette. For anyone who enjoys great food and a good ambiance Terroir is the perfect place to go. Whether it be for a freshly made sandwich on the run or sitting in and enjoying lunch while watching the world go by. Terroir aims to bring a little bit of the French ‘café culture’ to Aberdeen. Go and discover new products, enjoy a good coffee and perhaps listen to some Serge Gainsbourg! Terroir Delicatessen 371 North Deeside Road, Cults, Aberdeen AB15 9SX T: 01224 865233 30

Get A Head I first met Rob James a couple of years ago at the CAMRA Real Ale Festival in Aberdeen and in the time that’s lapsed since, he’s been a busy man. The then Hillside Brewery out-grew its original location on Donside and at the beginning of the year, new premises were opened at the Deeside Activity Park near Aboyne, to meet the demand. Their brews take their names from historical Scottish characters and the bottles feature Pictish symbols. Nechtan This is a 4.1% summer ale. The fruitiness of the American hops jumps out of the glass with touches of citrus and apple, it’s dry, zesty and refreshing. Brude This 3.5% straw coloured ale brewed with Alford oatmeal takes its name from Brude Mac Bili who was King of the Picts from 671-693. Mid-weight, the oatmeal adds a creamy sensation which lingers to a dry finish.

Macbeth This bronze ale is influenced by the fuggles and cascade hops, it’s savoury with notes of pink grapefruit to the sniff. The weightiness is balanced by the citrus edge. Rob recommends it to go with spicy foods. Broichan Darker, brooding and 5.2%, this has malty, almost sweet overtones with mocha on the taste. As Broichan was a 6th century druid or wise man, the name fits the beer perfectly. Rob’s suggestion of drinking by the fire with cheese and oatcakes (locally produced of course) seems ideal. You will find a selection of beers from the Deeside Brewery in grocers, delis, restaurants and bars across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. For a full list, visit www.hillside-brewery.com

Hyde & seek The brainchild of fashion designer and businesswoman, Tytti Peltoniemi, this West End treasure trove is truly making its mark on the North-east retail scene. It’s been a labour of love for Tytti, a native of Finland, who opened the store’s doors in June. Tytti, whose cashmere and leather designs have grabbed the headlines in glossies such as Vogue, Elle and The Skinny, uprooted from Amsterdam at the end of last year when her partner’s oil industry job shifted to Aberdeen. With false hopes of finding exclusive, quirky boutiques in Scotland’s most affluent city, Tytti decided to channel all her creative energies into bringing to Aberdeen a shopping concept like no other.

Eccentric and eclectic, visionary and sophisticated… a stunning new concept boutique is raising the stakes – and a few eyebrows – in Aberdeen. > words by niKi tEnnant

“I found premises in Chattan Place and got my head down for a solid eight weeks,” she explained. “I did everything myself, from the electrics to the plumbing, I bought antique furniture and I totally transformed the place.” Peltoniemi is a find. Stocking every comfort Tytti craved for when she arrived in the city, the store has organic teas, exquisitely packaged chocolate from Portugal, handblown glass bowls, and Jo Wood Organics. But the jewel in the boutique’s crown must surely be Tytti’s must-have handbags. She travels to Paris twice a year to meet French, Italian and Finnish tanneries and buy fine leathers. Animal ethics and sustainability are key concerns of Tytti,

whose handbags carry a price tag of between £220 and £1000. “Choose a bag from my collection and I’ll make changes to suit your wishes,” promised Tytti. “If you have a design in mind that you’ve forever dreamed of, I’ll make the pattern, and you’ll get a best quality, unique bag that will last a lifetime.” Tytti will unveil her new collection at the North-east Open Studios event in September. professionals – and, as Sheila puts it, ladies who are designed to shop.

“Personal shopping is the way forward for the retail industry,” said Sheila, who joined the family business 18 months ago. “With on-line shopping, there’s not the same element of retail therapy. The nice thing about the personal shopping service is that it is just that – personal. The personal service gives it the edge. It’s important that every shopping experience should be an event.” Sheila – who views her role as an event manager – prides herself on building a rapport with clients, enabling her to select a flattering look for them time and again.

In sizes ranging from 8 – 22, Celebrations’ labels include: Gerry Weber; Basler; Joseph Ribkoff; NYDJ (Not Your Daughter’s Jeans); Oui Moments; Luisa Cerano; Apriori; Condici; Presen of Barcelona; Frank Usher; Dusk; Quintesse; After Six and Medici. The store’s collection of handbags and accessories demonstrates Sheila’s trained eye for spotting the individual. Call to book an appointment for a free consultation. The creation of the Property Market at Brodie Point, in the heart of Aberdeen, allows the various companies under the K.W.A.D. brand, and their client focused people, to service customer’s needs from selling and buying property, leasing and re-mortgaging, property investment and sports representation. Things will get even busier in September when Offshore Europe arrives in Aberdeen. Offshore Europe is the largest upstream exhibition and conference outside the United States, and is held here in Europe’s energy capital of Aberdeen. It is one of the most important events for this region and the growth over the last 30+ years has gone hand in hand with the local oil and gas industry. With this growth, comes the need for more accommodation, in addition to the city’s hotels and guest houses, to

make sure no visitors are turned away. To achieve this, K.W.A.D., working with the organisers of Offshore Europe, will handle private housing during the exhibition ranging from one bedroom apartments to five bedroom houses within a 7 mile radius of the venue. K.W.A.D. look after the property for the duration of the show before returning it to the owner along with a cheque which is a worthwhile reward in return for their hospitality. K.W.A.D.’s Director of Serviced Apartments, Anita S. Hastie, comments: “I’m sure that Offshore Europe visitors will be delighted with the range of accommodation and the comfort and style that is on offer.” For further details on any of the services please call 01224 857930. 37

Precision with Vision Lynne Frost Interiors has lured a talented young interior designer from the Northeast of England to Aberdeen. Kye Ranson, a graduate in interior architecture, has joined Lynne Frost Interiors from George Bond Interior Design in Newcastle. The signing follows his chance meeting with Lynne Frost’s Sara Hyslop during a trip to Barcelona. When Sara contacted Kye earlier this summer to announce her move to pastures new, he jumped at the opportunity to fill her shoes in Aberdeen. “Although I’d never visited Aberdeen, I was aware of its reputation as a thriving city,” explained Kye, who is currently working on the complete design of a three-storey townhouse in Aberdeen’s Woodlands district.

“The company I was working for in Newcastle was hugely traditional, and my natural style was more contemporary. When I met Lynne, we got on great and it just seemed like the ideal move for me.” With the arrival of Kye, Lynne Frost’s discerning clients can now benefit from his CAD drawings expertise, which allows them to preview completed interior designs to scale. Said Lynne: “Kye’s contemporary style, coupled with a touch of the traditional, make him a fitting addition to our creative team. “Clients have instantly warmed to his design flair, and his state-of-the-art drawing techniques have added an exciting new dimension to our business.”

The Four Seasons Hotel, whose feet are lapped by the dream scene Loch Earn, is nothing short of a surprise. Perched like a sleepless night watchman on the Perthshire water’s eastern shore, its windows are a kaleidoscope to the Bens.

A collection of colourful wellies guide guests to the entrance of The Four Seasons, where its absorbing charms unfold. Visiting with my partner, Norman, 11-yearold son Marcus, and his friend, Jake, we are greeted with warmth and shown to our rooms. Each wall on the climb of the stairs is adorned with curious artefacts collected over the years by the hotel’s owner and insatiable traveller, Andrew Low. Visitors to St Fillans could be forgiven for raising an eyebrow to this unexpected homage to the central Asian kingdom of Bhutan. Forget the conventional Gideon’s guide to wellbeing normally presented to ‘nomads’ 42

detached from the sanctuary of home. In the Four Seasons’ bedside cabinet, you can instead draw inner harmony from the teachings of Buddha. Our key opens one of the hotel’s two fourposter bedrooms overlooking the jetty. The boys skim stones on the water’s edge while we order lunchtime snacks from the hotel’s Tarken café bar. The evening dining experience at hotel’s Meall Reamhar restaurant is exquisite. We sampled the assiette of Parma ham, hand dived Scrabster king scallops, loin of Highlands’ venison and limousine beef fillet, followed by a trilogy of seasonal Scottish cheeses.

Dishes from the juniors’ menu attracted from the boys the kind of praise to which most chefs surely aspire… “Awesome!” After a restful night and a hearty breakfast served by delightful hosts, we set off on our journey around the loch-side in quiet contemplation of a quirky, and somewhat intriguing Scottish retreat… with not a tartan carpet in sight. SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND

A fishy business summertime and the living is easy, fish are jumping and i’m at raemoir trout Fishery learning to persuade the trout to let me catch them and put them back. the trout have other ideas. The six acres of ponds form a tranquil haven for wild life. Wild flowers, damsel flies, newts, frogs, voles, butterflies, water rails, deer and foxes abound. Otters and buzzards are regular visitors to Raemoir’s collection of well stocked trout ponds, regarding the eight hundred fish as a deluxe buffet. David Attenbourgh would have a field day. The amiable Ron Low has taken on the thankless task of tutoring me. Ron patently shows me how to cast and gallantly refrains from laughing as I manage to make a new mistake each

time. The trout decide to tease by surfacing near my line. The first time this happens there’s an embarrassingly girly squeal. It’s not Ron. Raemoir runs classes for beginners in April and May and can hire equipment and provide tuition. Children can learn to fish in the bait pond. Many people release their catches back into the water, but you can pay extra for the option to catch dinner. Fishing is hugely relaxing. You’ll manage to empty your mind in the way that

you’re meant to in meditation or yoga but never quite manage because you’re thinking about shoes. Everyone is friendly and keen to encourage beginners. There’s a gentle camaraderie you won’t find in any gym. Raemoir should be offered on the NHS for anyone with stress – perfect tranquillity for just £14 a day! A charming gentleman lets me land the two and a half pound rainbow trout that he has hooked. Did I catch any myself? No, but you should have seen the one that got away! Donna Wilson, who hails from Huntly, has made quite a name for herself among the rich and famous.

Donna’s creative juices flowed and in 2003, when she launched her collection of ‘Weirder Creatures.’

It takes an exceptional talent to gain international notoriety for turning old jumpers into sought-after, designer knitted dolls.

The machine-knitted and hand embroidered soft toys caught the eye of a discerning buyer, who added ‘Weirder Creatures’ to the shelves of the renowned Moss in New York’s Soho district.

It takes an exceptional talent to gain international notoriety for turning old jumpers into sought-after, designer knitted dolls.

Her long legged ‘Donna Dolls’ made their debut at exclusive interiors boutique, Couverture, on King’s Road. Because each was unique, the dolls commanded a £50 price tag – and proved extremely popular among the store’s celebrity clientele.

The ‘Creatures’ were also snapped up by top London design store, SCP, who soon invited Donna to become involved in furniture design for its aspirational label. “Although the way I work is messy and spontaneous, I was determined that the ‘Creatures’ be handmade and not massproduced,” explained Donna (31). “My designs are produced by industries here in the UK. It’s a strong principle.” ‘The Motley’ (£1,695) – created by Donna Wilson for SCP – is a deepbuttoned, hand-knitted chesterfield-inspired footstool, first

showcased at the Milan Furniture Fair. John Lewis now stocks her colour-burst cushions at its Glasgow and London stores, and ‘Weirder Creatures’ are on sale at Junction Art & Gifts on Aberdeen’s Holburn Street. ART FEATURE

> words by sharon hawthornE

Drawing inspiration from supermarkets, DIY stores and everyday street scenes may seem unconventional, but for Inverurie based artist, Karen Meldrum, it is an award winning style that is recognised throughout Scotland.

Before graduating from Grays School of Art in 2006, Karen worked at Tesco, where early inspiration for her unique style of collage found fruition. “I loved the idea of stacking things on top of each other and the frenetic pace of people rushing around in the supermarket,” Karen said. Karen now specialises in architecture and landscapes, inspired by the majestic buildings of New York and the granite splendour of Aberdeen, however she isn’t adverse to different commissions.

54

Her favourite so far has been a reproduction of Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Tin. From her studio at home, Karen attaches a mixture of old and new textures to the canvas to produce an image with added depth and distance. “I like to create surprise and confusion through the use of recycled and everyday materials,” she added. Karen’s work has featured in galleries throughout Scotland and, among

others, she has received the Scottish Royal Academy Pillans and Waddie Award and the BP Fine Art Award. So what next for this talented young artist? “I’m spending the summer in Salamanca and I’m looking forward to studying the old architecture there and finding inspiration in the people I meet,” Karen said. “Then I’ll be back in September to show my paintings at Gallery I, Inverurie, for the North East Open Studios event.” Email: kjmel@yahoo.co.uk

MUSIC

> words by david nicholson

the Little kicks There’s a tradition of great Aberdonian bands releasing self-produced music that doesn’t quite live up to the promise of their live performances. The kind of cd that you’d own because you loved the band, but always with the grudging acknowledgment that without the deep pockets of a record label, they’d never have the budget to make a record that could compete for national radio play. And then along come the Little Kicks... They have just released “Boxing Clever”, an album of 10 songs that deserves – nay demands! - to be heard by anyone who loves hooky, intelligent, danceable guitar pop.

lee corpe @ snowfox Photography

With the assistance of DJ and producer Ian MacPherson, they have created an album that combines the summery warmth of Teenage Fanclub, the uptempo melancholy of early REM, the atmospheric reverb of My Morning Jacket and the electro inspired rhythmic stylings of Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party. Throw in a little Kinks here, a little Killers there.. Yet The Little Kicks do not sound like any one of these bands. They may wear their influences on their sleeves, but they have found their own sound somewhere between them all. It’s an appealing blend of assured-yetunderstated vocals, catchy and insightful lyrics, cleverly meandering guitar lines and a tight, enthusiastic rhythm section determined to make you want to dance.

After five years spent winning over crowds the length of the UK, a legendary crammed out show on T-inthe-Park’s T-Break stage a couple of years ago and opening slots for an impressive array of acts including Foals, Maximo Park, Editors and The Kooks, it should come as no surprise that they’re as good a live act as their album would promise. Unsurprisingly, their Myspace page is crammed full of glowing reviews from all areas of the music press. I can’t recommend enough that you get on down to 1-Up to pick up a copy of Boxing Clever – it could be your soundtrack to the hazy evenings of late summer.

Ladies and gentlemen, we’ve recently come through a golden age of classic US television drama. An age in which, week by week, month by month, we’ve been treated to more hours of top quality entertainment on the small screen than in the cinema. And as we mourn the loss of landmark dramas like The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The West Wing and The Wire, we find ourselves wondering what’s just around the corner, waiting to hook us in.. Here are two top notch US dramas to get excited about:

True Blood: Boasting the finest title sequence of the decade, the new series from Alan Ball (the Oscar winning screenwriter of American Beauty and Six Feet Under) is set to get pulses racing across the country. In a world where artificial blood has been invented, the vampire community has ‘come out of the coffin’ to claim peaceful coexistence with their human counterparts. Set in a small town in the sweaty southern state of Louisiana, it’s a steamy, twisty tale of bloodsuckers and fangbangers. Those who may accuse it of being mindless titillation are wrong. It’s carefully crafted, intelligent titillation.. While the kids are watching Twilight, the adults will be recording True Blood..

Breaking Bad Starring Brian Cranston (the Dad in Malcolm in the Middle) Breaking Bad tells the tale of Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with terminal cancer while already struggling to support his pregnant wife and disabled teenage son. Unable to pay his medical bills and desperate not to leave his family ruined after he is gone, he embarks upon a risky get-richquick scheme after a chance encounter with a drug dealing ex-pupil inspires him to go into business cooking crystal meth. And then his world spins out of control. The first series was already criminally hidden away in our schedules. Don’t miss season two: it’s Weeds meets Six Feet Under and as brilliant a show as you’re likely to see this year. Series 1: available on DVD in Dec Series 2: begins on Five US later this year 57

MOTORING

ROLLS-ROYCE PHANTOM COUPE > words by david GillandErs

Car kindly supplied by murray Rolls-Royce, Edinburgh

one question i’m often asked is “if you had unlimited funds which car would you buy?” It is a difficult one to answer because it would depend on whether I was specifically looking for performance, handling, road-holding or just outright speed. I thought I had my answers, a Lamborghini for performance, the new RS Focus for handling, the Porsche GT2 for road-holding and the Bugatti Veyron for outright speed. But, I have now had to rethink my opinions, forget all those parameters for the Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe does not fit into any of the above criteria but I would still say this is the finest car I have ever had the privilege to drive. 58

When driving the Phantom Coupe you feel detached from the rest world. The V12 with 453 bhp wafts you a long in quite a surreal driving experience. Pedestrians stop and stare, other motorists wave as you pass them and unbelievably as I drove up Queen’s Road I heard people applauding – quite amazing! The finish and the interior are to say the least sublime. The driver and passenger experience is second to none, I particularly liked the front door opening which allows easy access. One must not forget that behind the

Phantom is BMW with their legendary build quality. If you wish to purchase the Coupe it starts at a mere £300 000 and only gives you 14.3mpg. This is not a car to be easily taken into multi-storey car parks because it would not fit into many bays; best to get Jeeves to drop you off for the weekly shop. It would be very easy to be wooed by the Phantom, it does everything beautifully and yes I know it cannot do 200 mph and it does not have limpet like road holding and it cannot do 0 – 60 in 3 secs but what it can do is take you on a journey that no other car possibly can. It is a wonderful way to travel and experience never to be forgotten.

STAR LETTER Dear Trend, I felt compelled to write and tell you how much I love this magazine (I've just read my first copy) It's high time Aberdeen caught up with other major UK cities like Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester & London, and I think we're finally getting there. I was really excited to read what was on the next page of what appears to be a 'new' Aberdeen, certainly a more stylish Aberdeen. Your magazine has pointed out many of the things that are going to make Aberdeen great again, and make people want to visit the city that I for one love. Aberdeen has been somewhat overlooked in the past as a very industrial, dull grey city, and i'm looking forward to the changes ahead and the next issue of your magazine. Well Done!! Nicola Bruce, Blackburn Nicola was the lucky winner of dinner, to the value of £100 at The Albyn Bar and Restaurant!

Dear Trend,

Dear Trend,

Dear Trend,

Thanks for opening my eyes to chef Stuart Anderson’s recipe for Patlican Kizartma. I have a dear friend whom I love to bits – but she’s a fussy eater and a veggie to boot. I surprised her with the colourful aubergine dish featured in your June/July issue, and she devoured it. It was easy to prepare, too – and a welcome variation on my tired old pesto pasta. At last, I have an alternative to my until-now limited vegetarian cooking repertoire.

I was lucky enough to be invited as a guest to the Trend Life with Style Awards – and what a night it was! The atmosphere was electric and each winner was so deserving. The food and service at The Marcliffe were exceptional, and I left on a high.

With every issue of Trend, I always flick firstly to your travel section, as I love to recharge my batteries with a weekend away. As I’m about to welcome friends from London on their first visit to Aberdeen, I wondered if you’d consider featuring a visitor’s guide to Grampian? Those of us who are lucky enough to live here don’t always give the region’s natural attractions the admiration they deserve.

Congratulations. Book me a place for next year. Martin Baillie Carnoustie

Michigan Avenue , quite rightly dubbed ‘the Magnificent Mile’ is a shopper’s paradise. This wide, tree- lined, manicured avenue never seemed too crowed or too rushed so there was time to admire the art within the flower beds.

route on these took us north along the lakeside past Ohio Street Beach and lively Oak Street Beach. We cycled through Lincoln Park and made a brief stop at Lincoln Park Zoo before heading back.

A bus trip is often the best way to get acquainted with a city, see the sights and get your bearings. The Chicago Trolley and Double Decker Co. offer a regular hop on/off service. The mix of architecture is stunning, evolving as the city rose from the ashes of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. See it from another perspective on one of the hour long Chicago River Guided Architecture Cruises which leave from beside the Wrigley building.

The Art Institute of Chicago houses Grant Wood’s ‘American Gothic’ from Monet to Picasso. Afterwards take a stroll through the sculptures of Millennium Park.

The Navy Pier was originally used for navel training in World War II and is now a busy recreation destination which includes a Ferris wheel and children’s museum. This was also where we picked up our ‘beach cruiser’ bikes. Our

Chicago is a beautiful clean city that’s easy to explore on foot. Lake Michigan adds yet another dimension and the city skyline is unforgettable. Sleep The Avenue Hotel: with contemporary interiors, a roof top pool next to the 40th floor Sky Lounge, both give great views over the city. The location is unbeatable just yards from Michigan Avenue and minutes from the lakeside walks. www.avenuehotelchicago.com

Eat The walls of Gibsons Steak House are adorned with photos of famous diners. This is a buzzing, art deco styled steakhouse with entrees large enough to share. Go for an order of ‘surf’ along with your flavourful, melt in mouth ‘turf’, it was the largest lobster tail that I’ve ever come across. www.gibsonssteakhouse.com For breakfast, brunch and lunch you can’t go wrong with the Corner Bakery Café chain and for a hearty breakfast that will last you well into the afternoon. Try the West Egg Café on North Fairbanks. Drink The Redhead on West Ontario St is a dimly lit and ‘characterful’ piano bar. For a cocktail with a view head to the 96th floor bar of the John Hancock Centre. www.gochicago.com

Competition winners David Willis, of Westhill, won a spa day for two at the luxurious One Spa in Edinburgh – and lovingly handed the prize straight to partner Fiona Burns and her best friend, Gail Ferrier. It was quite a day for Trend subscriber Elena Sargeant of Newburgh. Not only did she graduate with a BSc from RGU, she also learned she’d won a pamper package from Temple Aesthetics in Cults. Karen Gray of Airyhall wins an elegant designer gown from Belmont Bridal Boutique in Banchory. Leianna Cowie of Bridge of Don and boyfriend Russell Minty will enjoy a two-night stay at the luxurious boutique Hotel Du Vin in Edniburgh. Mum of two Diane Walker, of Kingswells will take the plunge at Aberdeen Watersports after winning a Discover Scuba Diving session for four. Childminder Aileen Stewart, of Milltimber, will spend two nights in a luxurious two-bedroom Micasa apartment in the heart of Aberdeen. Aberdeen solicitor Vicky Corley has won designer swimwear from Rasurel, courtesy of Frou Frou – just in time for her three-week holiday in Dallas. 69

I love what I do. I have worked in the business since I was a teenager, when I operated the Waltzer ride. I considered it the best job in the world! I currently manage my time between the expanding business and my two sons. Now, much of my work is office-based, organising corporate events, from conferences and team-building days, to corporate entertainment barbecues. I have recently been at the forefront of the refurbishment of our ten-pin bowling centre, which is now much trendier with modern décor and large plasma screens. Did you ever consider an alternative career to the Codona family’s leisure legacy? At the age of 18, I studied beauty therapy and, after deciding that this was not the career for me, I completed a degree in business management which I have used to drive our business forward. When did you last treat yourself to a go on your favourite fairground ride (and which attraction is it?)? I took my boys to Alton Towers last summer – they share my passion for roller coasters! What gets Andrea Codona in a spin? I love a sunny day when there are lots of people smiling, having fun! In a noise, spills and thrills environment, where do you find tranquillity? I love time out with my boys and the freedom of travel. Our favourite place is Centre Parcs, where we can all enjoy cycling and lots of other outdoor activities. 74
