FROM THE EDITOR

Hello again,

It’s time to pack away your summer satins and smock dresses and get ready for autumn. We like to think of this time of year as being about cashmere, cupcakes and comfort food.

When the weather’s good, autumn brings out the best in the city and shire. Mild days and cosy nights, the changing colours of the landscape, sea and sky, the new season’s styles in the shops and the seasonal treats that come from the shire’s larder, from venison and seasonal cheeses to wild mushrooms and foraged fruit. It’s all good! We’re even gearing up for the festive season, though we’re advised not to mention it at home quite yet.

The changing of the seasons brings the opportunity to change, expand your horizons and try something new. It might be a college course, heading out to see a new play or band, a different boutique, a complex single malt or a trip to one of the city’s fascinating selection of Asian and Oriental grocers or restaurants. It could be a new hair style, nail colour or exploring somewhere you’ve never been before.

Take every opportunity to try something new this season. Variety is, they say, the spice of life.

Love

Where to live your best life in September and October…

Almost a third of kids entering Primary 1 are judged to be at risk of being overweight or obese, and it’s a problem that’s associated with heightened risk of everything from strokes and cardiac issues to depression, diabetes and even some cancers.

Despite us being well aware of the health risks, losing weight isn’t always easy, but there are a wide variety of local resources you can draw on, whether it’s that stubborn ten pounds you’d feel happier without or an issue that’s putting your health and wellbeing at risk…

8 | HEALTH

There are diets out there to suit every preference, some more effective than others. You could try intermittent fasting, or go keto, low-carb, paleo or vegan. There are slimming clubs and groups, or you could opt for the exercise route and head for the gym. Aesthetic or surgical procedures like fat freezing, body sculpting, liposuction or tummy tucks offer another approach.

It’s tempting to turn to wonder drugs like Wegovy, but prescriptions are only available to those with a BMI of over 30, or an associated co-morbidity. Supplies might also be rationed as the drug’s primary use is in managing diabetes. It is possible to get a private prescription from online doctors, but this is not without its own risks. Users lose around 15% of body weight over 68 weeks, so it’s not an overnight cure.

For many of us, our weight is a complex issue, so looking into the reasons of why we eat as we do – reaching for chocolate when we’re stressed or opening the fridge door when we’re bored, or simply making poor choices – can often help us understand our actions and form a basis for changing our behaviours.

Claire Spence of The Lavender

Theory specialises in helping her clients eat more mindfully. She explained, ‘Diets promise quick fixes, but they don't address the emotional aspects of eating or the uniqueness of your body's needs. Instead, they reinforce restrictive tendencies, creating a perpetual loop of hope and disappointment. Mindful

eating tunes into your body and understanding its hunger and fullness signals to foster a compassionate relationship with food, responding when your body truly needs nourishment, differentiating between genuine hunger and other triggers like boredom, stress, or habit.’

Transformational coach Judith Stephens (judithstevens.com) commented, ‘Working with a coach to create a vision for how you want to feel in your skin can be hugely beneficial when we are trapped in a cycle of self-loathing and criticism. Identifying how you want to feel and how important it is to you can help motivate you towards a more compassionate and caring attitude towards yourself. Real change takes time and effort. There will be wins and losses along the way – partnering with a Transformational Coach might give you the support and encouragement you need.’

Hypnotherapy is another avenue worth exploring. Vicki Rebecca (vickyrebecca.com) said, ‘Hypnotherapy speaks to the subconscious mind, which is where our habits – good and bad – are formed. Our relationship with food and how we think of ourselves is part of that. Hypnotherapy has been shown to be effective in helping many people get rid of unwanted habits and behaviours and to help instil healthier behaviours.’

Whatever option works for you, you’ll gain a whole new sense of vitality and wellbeing. What have you got to lose?

With the latest crop of high-tech beauty treatments, you can get salon-quality results without leaving your own bedroom. Here’s what we’re loving right now…

Bondi Body’s Laser@Home

Bondi Body’s Laser@Home is the most powerful permanent hair reduction system available for home use. There’s none of the pain or contortions associated with waxing and it can be used anywhere on the body except around the eyes. Like all IPL at home lasers, it’s not for those with dark skins, natural redheads or grey hair. You should see results in as little as four weeks and then it’s just a monthly top up to keep unwanted plumage at bay.

Better yet, Bondi’s Laser@Home doubles up on skin rejuvenation, improving skin texture, reducing pigmentation and broken capillary veins, though again, it’s not advised for anyone who has previously had skin cancer or who is genetically predisposed towards it. You’ll be hair free and looking younger in a flash! Find it at bondi-body.com/product/bondi-laser-home/ for £299, although they sometimes have offer codes, making it even better value.

OmniluxLED’s Omnilux Contour

OmniluxLED’s Omnilux Contour is a medical grade red light therapy device with clinically proven results for anti-aging and skin rejuvenation. The red and near infra-red LEDs stimulate collagen production for firmer, more youthful-looking skin

Strap it on for three to five ten minute sessions for four to six weeks and you should see a marked reduction in pigmentation, redness, fine lines and wrinkles. There’s no pain and no downtime, just fresher, healthy, younger-looking skin. The device isn’t to be used if you’re pregnant or breast-feeding.

It gets rave reviews; 95% of users say they’d recommend it to others. After three treatments per week for four

weeks 98% said their skin felt firmer, 96% felt their fine lines were less visible and 95% said their skin was brighter and plumper.

It’s possible to buy a version for the neck and décolletage and there’s a men’s version too. £290 from omniluxled.com

StylPro

StylPro offers a host of electrical beauty gadgets. If your neck is less firm than you’d like, their Fabulous Firmer uses a combination of heat, massage, and both red and blue light technology to prevent and reduce wrinkles, age spots, improve acne and even skin. It also stimulates the production of collagen and elastin in facial and neck skin to increase the firmness and elasticity of your skin. It’s lightweight and you can use it anywhere. Find it at stylpro.co.uk for £29.99.

StylPro’s Bags Be Gone heated eye wand is genuinely relaxing. The wand has three different modes each of which uses head to help unblock glands above and below the eye, reducing itchiness, redness, and heaviness. It’s great for tired eyes or if you have itchy eye from hay fever too. As well as the warmth, you get a choice of adding a vibrating massage which assists lymphatic drainage, increasing circulation and helping to reduce puffiness and redness, or a LED red light feature which encourages the regeneration of both collagen and elastin, two natural proteins that promote a smoother, youthful appearance in the skin. The final mode uses warmth, massage and red light therapy all at once. Find it at stylpro.co.uk for £29.99.

Andrew Scott Dental Care Something to smile about as new Queens Road premises opens

Andrew Scott Dental Care have just moved in to their new facilities at 39 Queens Road. As well as two further surgeries, taking the practice’s total to five, the team now have their own relaxing garden and better break facilities.

Principal dentist Andrew Scott explained, ‘Our patients tell us how calm and relaxed it feels in the new practice. The reception and waiting area feels more like a boutique hotel rather than a dental waiting room. We now have a second ground floor surgery which can be used for IV sedation and oral surgery. We also have a larger car park, we’re on a bus route with stops close by and have also installed bike racks.

‘Because we now have five surgeries, we’re welcoming new private patients. New members of the team include specialist periodontologist Will Anderson, offering dental implant placement and periodontal treatments including implant maintenance, and Associate Dentist Rachel Jackson who has a particular interest in restorative and aesthetic dentistry.

‘The entire team is passionate about the treatment that they provide. Our new education and training suite allow us to run courses and events for qualified dentists and several team members already work in conjunction with universities. I’m an honorary lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire and Rachel Jackson is a clinical teaching fellow at the institute of dentistry Aberdeen. Rachel will be running professional training on the newest dental materials, techniques

‘Our commitment to training and development means all our treatment is undertaken using very high quality materials and the latest technology with extra time taken over the provision of the treatment to try to achieve the best possible results. We still aim to provide value for money with our prices being comparable those of other dental andrewscottdental.co.uk

Legal Quines -Your family law social media resource

It may be surprising to realise that one of the North- east’s leading family law teams can be found posting on social media, but as Partner Lynne Mulcahy, explained, it’s a great way for clients to find answers to many of their questions about divorce, separation, division of property and assets, child arrangements and a host of other areas.

‘We were aware of an English solicitor, with nearly a million followers, who provided short social media video clips on family law issues. We thought this was an excellent way to engage with potential clients and answer their questions, in an easily digestible format. Scottish Family Law is substantially different to English and so “The Legal Quines” was born. You’ll find us on TikTok, Instagram, LinkedIn and Facebook, posting up to four times a week.”

Fellow partner, Kirsten Knight commented on the importance of adapting the way they communicate for the clients of today ‘It’s a way of exploring particular questions and issues in an easily accessible, no commitment manner. We know people will sometimes have been thinking about separation or divorce for a while before coming to see one of our family law team at Balfour + Manson. The clips are easily sharable and a number of our clients have come to us because a friend sent them a video clip. As well as providing accurate information, in a way that’s engaging and easy to understand, it means our clients feel they know us and that we understand the issues that matter to them at challenging times in their lives.’

Coaching support to help you live your best life

As a professional coach, I help my clients establish and work towards achieving their goals. Working alongside my clients as they learn more about themselves, discovering what motivates them and supporting them is the greatest privilege.

Transformational Coaching looks at where you are currently, a little bit of what got you there, a whole lot of how you would like to feel in the future and creating a plan for how you will get there.

My clients range from students to CEOs. They all have a desire live a better life. Coaching is about listening without judgement, remaining compassionately curious while you think and talk and not offering quick fix solutions. A real space for you to figure out who and where you want to be. That’s what I offer.

My own background encompasses being raised as an Aberdeenshire farmer’s daughter, training at drama school in London, working for the BBC, raising a family and working with theatre companies and I find these experiences mesh well with my coaching knowledge.

If you’d like to explore how coaching might help you live

your best life, I offer a free thirty minute pre-coaching conversation. It can be worth doing this with a few coaches so you find the right one to support you on your journey. Some specialise in corporate coaching, others take a holistic approach. Most of my coaching is done online, but I also offer Walk & Talk sessions or

face to face appointments. It could be a one off session, but usually, Transformational Coaching involves a commitment of six hour-long sessions over the course of 6-12 months where the goal requires significant effort and perhaps a change of behaviour to realise.

If it’s time for you to start your journey to being who you want to be, then get in touch.

Take off to Tahiti

Who hasn’t daydreamed about leaving the cold and rain behind and heading for a South Sea island idyll? All those swaying palm trees and sandy beaches seem to call out at this time of year. How about snorkelling or diving in the Marquesas Islands? The group is one of the most remote in the world and part of French Polynesia, with the entire population numbering under 10,000.

Getting there is a bit of a hassle, unless you happen to have your own yacht. The flight to Tahiti takes over two days and involves at least two stops, so plan on exploring various destinations en route.

Once you arrive in Tahiti, board the Aranui 5, a hybrid cruise and cargo ship that visits the Marquesas around 15 times a year. The journey takes 13 days, so book plenty of time off. Air Tahiti does fly to the islands, but services can be disrupted by weather issues.

Once you arrive, you can look forward to jungle treks, wandering the beaches, visiting the Paul Gaugin Cultural Centre, witnessing traditional dance or learning to make tapa cloth from hand-processed bark.

Certified divers can head to Hiva Oa where Marquises Diving will offer you the chance to explore the reefs which attract tiger sharks and marble rays.

Whether it’s a luxury upgrade to celebrate a milestone or ticking off that bucket list trip, everyone should have a travel adventure at least once

It costs from just under £10,000 per person, but you’ll pay more for a balcony cabin. Alternatively, you can book several regional cruises back to back for more flexibility.

You’ll find My Spice Shop on St. Machar Road, just off the Drive. They’re part of Fair deal Foods and are particularly strong on exotic fruit and vegetables, stocking everything from amla to yams. Admittedly, you’re bound to be tempted by some strange and wonderful delights that end up lurking at the bottom of the fridge, but prices for store cupboard goods are significantly cheaper than the world foods aisle at your usual supermarket. They’ve also got an extensive selection of frozen Indian breads, starters and ready meals if cooking from scratch isn’t for you. It’s not just Indian food either, Turkey and the Middle East and the Mediterranean all get a look in. They’re also the UK’s biggest online World Foods online supplier (myspiceshop.co.uk) if you prefer to have your groceries delivered.

If you’re looking for something more central, then have a wander up King Street or George Street, both of which abound in interesting little shops selling world foods. Pop into Spice of Asia on John Street. They’re great for interesting veg, bunches of herbs, halal meat and stock a massive range of ingredients.

If you like your ingredients exotic, then a visit to Matthews Foods, the Oriental Supermarket on Causewayend is a must. There’s a gazillion different sauces and varieties of noodle, interesting exotic veg and mushrooms and frozen food. Admittedly, there are a few things that won’t make it into our basket, chicken feet and frozen pork uterus is just a little too authentic for our tastes.

If you’d rather someone else did the cooking, 8848 on Union Street is named after Mount Everest and the menu scales the heights of Nepalese and Indian cuisine, but with a modern twist and fresh flavours. Their biryanis are brilliant and we have a soft spot for their excellent dal makhani. There’s lots of choice for vegetarians and vegans, including a veggie thali and starters like Edamame Bhel and Bikaneri Paneer Tikka. They’ve had more awards than they have room for.

Family Law team

PRIORITISING CHILDREN DURING SEPARATION

Separations are often stressful for every member of the family. They inevitably bring about a period of change and uncertainty, not only for adults, but also for children, yet there are many ways to make the process less painful.

It is vital that children are not negatively impacted by these changes and that they are shielded from parental conflict. The welfare and happiness of children should always be prioritised.

Where safe and practical, children should have the opportunity to have loving relationships with both parents and their extended family following separation. Parental relations should be respectful and co-operative to ensure stability. Neither parent should stoop to denigrating the other or using the child as ammunition, emotional support or as messengers. Allow children to be children.

Different living arrangements work for different families and the focus should be on the needs and interests of the children, rather than achieving equality between parents. Factors such as the geographical location of parents and other family, suitable housing,

schooling, employment, finances, health and wellbeing all need to be carefully considered.

Take children’s wishes regarding their own welfare into consideration if they can fully comprehend the situation, but never expect them to bear the burden of decision making. They should not be privy to adult conversations or quarrels.

Parents can struggle to reach agreement on care arrangements for the children. For advice on parental responsibilities and rights, and on resources and approaches to dispute resolution available to separating parents, we would recommend that you contact one of our specialist family lawyers via acandco.com

Separation is never a happy time for families, but with the right guidance and legal team, the journey can be smoother and the fairest outcome arrived at.

Maybe it’s time to resurrect everyone sitting down to dinner, chatting round the table instead of having one eye on the TV and the other on their phones?

According to the University of Oxford, social eating, where everyone gathers at the dining table together, boosts emotional wellbeing and family bonding. It also makes people feel happier, less lonely, more satisfied with life, more trusting of others. They are more engaged with their local communities, and have more friends they can depend on for support. Kids who regularly sit down for meals with the family generally have a healthier diet, eating more fruit and veg and being less likely to become obese. That’s all pretty impressive for furniture!

Here’s our pick of the best upgrades for your dining room. New dinnerware or cutlery can make everything taste so much better, whether it’s your poshest dinner party dish, a Friday night takeaway or just beans on toast!

House plants are increasingly popular in the UK but the practice of indoor gardening dates back to ancient times. Houseplants can transform any space and have been proven to reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure and increase productivity, whilst creating a feeling of calm.

Just like creating an outdoor garden, the trick is to choose plants that will thrive in the local environment, lighting conditions and temperature match. Ensure proper drainage by using pots with drainage holes and remember to add a drip tray to catch any excess water. Water your plants according to the type of plant, avoiding both overwatering and underwatering. Regularly dust the leaves to keep them clean and allow for better photosynthesis. Misting, using a water spray helps to hydrate the leaves and regulate water absorption. Keep an eye on your plants for signs of pests or diseases and take appropriate action if needed.

Fiona MacDonald, of Rooted on Rosemount Place suggests Sansevieria (snakeplants or mother-in-laws tongue), Spathiphyllum (Peace Lily) and Epipremnum aureum (Devil's Ivy or Golden Pothos) as ideal first-time houseplants. ‘They're considered weeds in their natural environment as they are tough and vigorous plants, so they’re well suited to being houseplants.

‘The Peace Lily can be a bit of a diva, though - she will droop dramatically when she needs watering clearly letting you know what she needs and it is amazing to see how her leaves perk up a few hours after watering.

‘Plants are very therapeutic to care for and are nature's art. They are beautiful to have in your home and add life to a space. Having greenery in your home is so good for the soul. Having greenery in your home also helps to get through the long, grey winters.’

‘Succulents have captured the hearts of plant enthusiasts and beginners alike over the past few years,’ explained Craig Troup of Highland Moss, the specialist plant shop on Constitution Street near the beach. ‘They are very diverse, low maintenance and come in all shapes and sizes.

New hybrid varieties are continually being introduced, ensuring that the succulent world remains ever-evolving and exciting.

GARDENS | 57

‘Succulents are perfect for smaller spaces as you can create a collection that fits perfectly on a window sills, shelf or desk. Their adaptability allows plant lovers in small flats or with limited space to cultivate a green oasis.

‘We have an online plant hospital packed with advice, a repotting service, creative plant workshops and our own moss pole supports. We pick the moss ourselves by agreement with local landowners where the moss will be damaged due to forestry operations, so it’s very sustainable.

‘We also have lots of fascinating carnivorous plants in stock, as well as specimen houseplants, so there’s something for all ages and budgets.’

If you’re looking to start a collection, then interesting combinations such as Monstera, Asparagus Fern, Dracaena and Yucca will create a dramatic effect, or how about a trailing Bougainvillea and tropical plants for that holiday feel? Make sure your plants have adequate light, but avoid placing them in direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. Rotate your plants occasionally to ensure even growth and prevent them from leaning towards the light source. Check the moisture level of the soil before watering and adjust accordingly. Don't use cold water on sensitive plants, as it can shock their roots. Room temperature water is generally recommended.

Taking your houseplants outdoors when the temperatures are warm enough is a lovely idea but you need to acclimatise them by doing this in short bursts otherwise you may send them into shock - most common houseplants come from the tropics!

Katie Lindsay of Ben Reid Garden Centre added, ‘Houseplants needn’t be difficult to look after and they are a beautiful addition to our homes and workplaces. Whether a collection of smaller pots or a standalone piece, they lift your mood or create a sense of calm. Indoor plants also purify the air and have a positive effect in the workplace.

‘We have an impressive selection of quality houseplants of all shapes and sizes. Their staff have the knowledge, experience and passion for houseplants to guide you to make the best choice and arm you with the tools for your plants to thrive and for you to enjoy them for years to come. They also have a great selection of ceramic pots, potting composts and plant foods, watering cans and misters.’

Start with one plant and before you know it, you’ll have a collection that will turn your home in to a lush green space that’s filled with interesting shapes and textures, enhancing your wellbeing and bringing joy.

Laura May Young’s beguiling illustrative prints showcase the wonders of nature…

‘Drawing has always been part of my life, it’s always been my go-to activity for feeling happy. During lockdown I claimed our porch as a wee studio and drew a lot more.

‘I work in Aberdeen as a secretary in the NHS and often visit my mum in Fochabers. The journeys let me enjoy the scenery and witness the landscape, textures, movement and changing seasons. Nature is the biggest influence on my work.

‘I have always been drawn to a more illustrative type of image. Pen, ink and marker pens are great to work with. Although my pieces take a lot of time, with a lot of detail, the inks allow me to progress quickly with vibrant colours, layering, subtle blending and the odd nice surprise with textures.

‘I love the composition stage, sketching ideas then inking the outlines before choosing a colour palette, layering for intensity, blending colours and adding detail.

‘I’ve reduced my hours at work to give myself some more time to focus on my art, working on prints, tote bags and cushions printed with my work. I’ve just finished some seasonal greetings cards too.

‘My prints can be viewed and purchased from my Etsy page etsy.com/shop/LauraMayYoungArt or from the Portsoy Gift Box ( portsoygiftbox). I’m taking part in NEOS in September and I’m looking forward to visitors in my wee studio.’

Team Jak, the charity providing local support for children with cancer and their families

Team Jak aims to ensure that no child, young person, their family or friends feel alone on their cancer journey at whatever stage, and for however long they need. Our purpose stems from the lived experience of 15-year-old Jak Trueman on his own cancer journey.

Jaks Den Aberdeen provides support to children and their families affected by cancer and related illnesses. The Den is open on Tuesday and Wednesday between 10am-4pm and other times by appointment. It’s a unique approach that meets emotional and relational needs through tailor-made programmes and activities. By helping them regain control, build resilience and have fun, we alleviate the feelings of loneliness associated with cancer.

We have a comprehensive programme of activities including Mini Denner sessions for under 5's, Teen Chat sessions, Lunch Clubs, Sunday Big Breakfasts, Parent Patter and ‘Angel’ family support groups for

those bereaved. Outings are a big favourite which allow our inspirational young people and families to get out and do something fun with other families in the same position, where they can forget their cancer journey for a short period.

We also offer 1:1 counselling for adults and children, music therapy and group support.

People can reach out directly to our Jaks Den Aberdeen Children, Young Person & Family Coordinator Sarah on either Sarah@teamjak. org.uk or 01224 895893. You don’t need a referral.

We have a variety of fundraising opportunities from our Aberdeen Kiltwalk team to corporate volunteering, Jak’s Bonus Ball or setting up a monthly donation.

We have a Race Night in Aberdeen on Saturday 30th September. Tickets are £25 and it’s guaranteed to be fun! Tickets can be purchased from trybooking.co.uk/CNFC

GAIL ROSE RUNS PREMIERE PRODUCTIONS UK, THE CITY’S LONG-ESTABLISHED MODELLING AND SHOW PRODUCTION AGENCY…

I’m from Aberdeen and my first passion was music. I had lessons in percussion, piano, voice and guitar from the age of seven. I performed in bands, orchestras and theatre pits, even appearing at the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Concert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and studying with Dame Evelyn Glennie. I even worked as a session musician for Grampian TV, documentaries, Hogmanay shows, the BBC and accompanied and toured with the Torry Quine, June Imray.

I also worked part time as a model and one day my agency asked if I could produce music for a bridal catwalk show. I’ve always loved music and wedding dresses, so it was the perfect combination for me. From there, I discovered a gap in the market for fashion show and event production, stage management and a model agency, so Premiere Productions was born.

Now we do photoshoots, show production, promotions and exhibitions. There’s always something exciting going on. We’ve done stage management for Beverly Knight, Fiona Kennedy, Heather Smalls, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Gary Wilmott and Sir Alex Ferguson and we’re involved in many of Trend’s events and fashion shoots. We do bridal catwalk shows including Your Wedding Aberdeen, as well as all over Scotland and down in to the Lake District.

We also produce Dance Proms Aberdeen which involves around 350 dancers from Dance Schools across the city and shire,

as well as charity fashion shows like Brave and Courage Fashion for Friends of Anchor, where we help stage the shows and train the models. I love seeing Anchor’s volunteer models become so much more confident in themselves, not just in terms of their appearance, how they move and hold themselves, but inside themselves too. It’s quite a transformational process for many of the models involved.

years. I get to meet so many amazing clients that have become life-long friends and I still love working with the ever changing styles in fashion and music.

There’s very little I don’t love about my job, but if I have to choose something, it’s when things become untidy and chaotic backstage during a show. Before the show, everything is beautifully organised with each model’s outfits in running order on their clothes rails. When the models arrive for the show everything gets untidy. I find myself tidying their bags away under tables so they aren’t near their rails. I think I may be a little OCD.

I’ve been married to Mike for 42 years, and should just like to point out I was a very young bride. We have two amazing children. Michelle works as a professional dancer and photographer in London and Glen is studying law at RGU.

Over the years, our work has diversified in terms of the number and types of events we manage, but also our models are becoming more diverse in terms of age and size. We represent all ages from young children to retired people. Our oldest model is Judy, who’s 92.

I’m really fortunate that everyone involved in Premiere Productions is great. I have a wonderful, hardworking, professional crew of models, some of whom have been with me now for 25

When I’m not at work, I’m listening to music for the next shows and meticulously saving in folders! I spend a lot of time with my Dad who has Parkinson’s and Dementia and I still teach rhythm workshops two days a week in primary school classes throughout the city.

I’m really grateful that my work means I get to do all the things I love.
