How to Reduce the Appearance of Ageing Lips?
Firstly, we need to know what causes ageing and start thinking about how you can minimise the damage. We need to apply sunscreen, not only on the skin but on the lips themselves. Although this should be done from a young age, it’s never too late to apply daily SPF, as it’s essential for keeping our skin and lips protected from UV damage. We also need to try and reduce stress in our lives, have a balanced diet with lots of antioxidant-enriched foods, and consider taking collagen supplements. Let’s start with the bad news. The waist is back, so belts and corseted tops are big news, though thankfully the cooler months should witness the departure of the crop top. Vest tops are the new essential, paired with oversized knitwear with riotous patterns and sleeves that are often dramatic or over-long.
One of the key trends is length. Maxi skirts and wide legged trousers are paired with ankle length coats to create an elegantly stylish look. These ensembles are often in precisely the same colour from head to toe, including accessories, which creates an opulent air and adds height. They can be austere in all black, or incredibly striking in rich shades of emerald, petrol blue or naturals, with chocolate brown making a surprisingly flattering comeback. Any shade will work, but it needs to be closely matching.
Soft but structured leather and suede is also a standout this season, particularly in skirts and outerwear, and again in a wide range of strong colours. Look for oversized blazers with strong shoulders or oversized flight jackets. Evening wear seemed to be trending towards transparency, which doesn’t lend itself to the Scottish winter.
For the younger set, Y2K remains a source of fashion inspiration, but with a more preppy turn, with Clueless providing the style cues. Think flirty little minis worn with blazers, but this is one trend that’s best avoided if you can remember when the film came out! 02 03 05 04 06 07

Take a walk along Banff’s High Street and admire the Georgia frontages of many of the houses, take in an exhibition at Duff House, sign up for a jewellery making workshop at The Smiddy by Vanilla Ink, or indulge yourself with a sugar rush at The Candy Box. Head over the bridge to Macduff, where you can visit the Marine Aquarium, visit the wildlife at Troup Head RSPB Nature Reserve or pick up some great new pieces for your wardrobe at The Platform before enjoying a snack or something sweet at Annie’s Cakery. You can walk of the calories with a brisk walk up the Hill of Doune towards the Temple of Venus. Pop along the coast to Fraserburgh where you’ll find Tres Chic, a great independent boutique on Cross Street. Fraserburgh is also home to the North Aberdeenshire office of Wealth Management, who can help you create a more secure financial future with advice on investments, planning for retirement and other life events. They’re also in Bridge of Don. Once all that’s sorted out, take a stroll round the harbour and pick up some fish or seafood from one of the town’s many suppliers. ELLON Ellon makes for a rewarding day out, particularly if you like history and sweets. The town is surrounded by castles and stately homes. The Sometimes, you just need to take a day out of the city and explore some new sights and different shops for a change. You could come back with some new outfits, half your Christmas shopping taken care of or a whole new look. Here’s our pick of unmissable places to shop and visit in the towns in the northern half of the shire… estate grounds at Haddo have been reopened after last winter’s storms brought down around half a million trees, so it’s now possible to take a stroll through the autumn landscapes. The picturesque ruins of Tolquhon Castle are worth a visit too, not least because you can also pop into the Tolquhon Gallery which runs six exhibitions a year and stocks over 150 artists. The gallery specialises in established Scottish artists and emerging artists. If you’d prefer to make your own art, you could pre-book at pottery and ceramics painting session at BeeCrafty Studio, just outside the town. If nature’s more your thing, take a detour to Forvie Sands Nature Reserve at Collieston and have a wander through the ever-shifting dunes. If you like a bit of a rummage, then Ellon’s Indoor Market is worth a visit for its ever-changing, gloriously random selection of second hand and vintage items. You could come home with a garden train set or an antique treasure. Ellon’s also a great choice if you fancy giving either your home, or yourself a bit of a makeover. Fraser’s of Ellon on Ythan Terrace is a family business that’s been supplying the best in furniture and flooring for over 90 years. They’ll price match and offer free delivery up to 40 miles which is always an indication of wonderful customer service. Jenny Grey is an amazingly talented makeup artist specialising in Bridal and special occasions. You’ll find her studio on Bridge Street, where she and her talented team also offer nails, lashes, brows and hair extensions. You could come out looking like a whole new woman!

LOCAL TRAVEL CatWalkers on Station Road is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in stylish clothing. Alison Walker and her team are always happy to provide positive, but objective advice and you could emerge with a surge of self-confidence and new ideas on what you can wear. Luckily CatWalkers carry stock in sizes 8-24, which may come in handy if you’ve overindulged with a visit to The Chocolate Bar or Hey Sweetie! The Chocolate Bar can be found on Market Street and is a combination of a café and an artisan chocolate maker. They sometimes have workshops where you can learn to make your own truffles or Chocolate Tasting sessions. Hey Sweetie looks like an old-fashioned confectioners’ with rows and rows of jars filled with colourful sweeties. They carry some sugar-free and gluten-free lines too. It’s also on Market Street. We’d suggest either might be a good source of Christmas presents, but we all know that whatever you buy will be devoured long before December. Other speciality shops worth seeking out include Better Read an independent bookshop on Ythan Terrace that has great sections on Scottish history and books in Doric. Jules’ Healing Gems is on Market Street and stocks every type of crystal under the sun, as well as jewellery, essential oils, artwork and greetings cards. Udny is also worth a stop if you’re feeling hungry. You’ll find Eat on The Green, one of the shire’s most highly rated restaurants, at Udny Green. Udny’s Still Spirit at Whisky Hammer specialist auctioneers, offers superb selection of rare whiskies and tasting experiences.
INVERURIE Inverurie is another good choice for a day trip out of the city. It has a good selection of interesting independent shops like Strachan’s on West High Street which started out as a fruit and veg cart back in 1938 and has evolved into a newsagent, toy shop, deli and ice cream supplier and a gift shop. Mitchell’s of Inverurie, just across the road at the Market Square grew from a dairy farm but now has a grocery come gift shop. Another old family firm is William Bruce. The footwear specialist can be found on the High Street. Niche food specialists retailers abound in Inverurie. Check out Davidson’s the butcher which has some unusual offerings, like Full Boar pork pies made with BrewDog Beer, alongside its fish and bakery sections. You’ll find both them and The Inverurie Whisky Shop on Burn Lane. Similarly, you’ll find A&G Collie Butchers in Kemnay, and Hattoncrook Farm Shop and Deli at McGregor Farm near Whiterashes. If you’re in the mood for some pampering and highend aesthetic treatments, then both Aesthtic Beauty Inverurie and Clinetix should be on your must visit list. Martina at Aesthetic Beauty is a miracle worker when it comes to aging or problem skin, while Cliinetix's medical-grade facials, injectables, body contouring and skin tightening services are well worth the trip out of town. The Garioch Heritage Centre has a LEGO Brick City exhibit for all of October that’s a good choice for a day out with kids. If you’re more of an action-adventure type, then book an activity day at Lochter Activity Centre at Oldmeldrum. There are tons of things to choose from archery to zorbing. They’ve got a good café too. Given that the next few months can see some extreme weather, it might be advisable to pre-book and check in with Tawse Tyres and have some winter tyres fitted. They can make winter driving much safer and easier, especially when roads are wet or snowy.
BALMEDIE Balmedie makes a great stopping off point on your northern day trip. Take a wander along the beach or pop into Indi + Will for some wonderful childrenswear, clothing for adults, gifts and toys, or head to Trump International for lunch, afternoon tea, or 18 holes on the world-class golf links. Trump International always has some amazing festive events in November and December, so keep an eye out and pre-book if necessary.

Eating seasonally makes sense. Not only does it cut air miles and reduce our food’s carbon footprint but it supports local growers and we get fresh produce that’s cheaper and tastes better. Who needs green beans that have flown in from Peru or apples that have been stored for two years before they hit the supermarket shelves when Scotland produces so many tasty options at this time of year?
The North-east is known for the quality of its fish, seafood and meat. Buying direct from a local fishmonger or Torry-based wholesaler means you get the freshest of catches and most are happy to do the prep work for you, or offer serving suggestions. Haddock, cod and coley are plentiful at this time of year, but it makes sense to look for sustainably caught fish. Crabs, mussels and clams are also good in the autumn months. Given the time of year, it can be worth asking your butcher about cheaper cuts, like beef cheeks, skirt or shin that can be slow-cooked in stews and spicier dishes like chillies, adobos and curries. Similarly, buying a whole chicken is much more economical than buying pre-packed breasts. Game is also in season, with venison making a change from beef. Try venison sausages, burgers or use it to make posh stovies. Game birds, like pheasant, partridge, wood pigeon and guinea fowl are available from specialist retailers, as is rabbit, but these are often more accessible when they come neatly pre-prepared and vacuum packed, unless you’re okay dealing with fur, feathers and shotgun pellets.
In general, the less processed the food, the cheaper it is and the better it will taste. Mushrooms, particularly wild mushrooms, are great at this time of year. If you can’t tell your chanterelles from a death cap, it may be best to use a supplier like Rosemount’s Pasta Plus or one of the local veg suppliers rather than foraging for them in the Mushroomswoods.aside, there are plenty of things worth foraging for as autumn’s harvests peak. Brambles are worth seeking out in hedgerows and you may get lucky and find some damsons. Neighbours often have too many apples or plums to make full use of, or have too much produce from their veg plot. Scottish apples and pears tend to be at their best in September and October, either fresh or as a seasonal crumble. Plums are also in season now. There’s a bumper harvest of root veg at this point of the year, with carrots, parsnips, beetroot, shallots, onions and potatoes all ready now. Young leeks, celeriac, broccoli and kale are also in season, as are pumpkins, sweet potatoes and an exciting array of squash. Local farmer markets and farm shops are always worth a visit, particularly at this time of year, when you can find everything from locally cured bacon to baked goods and lots of interesting specialities, like cheeses, sauces and jams. You may even find a few things worth putting by for Christmas gift hampers or just your own festive table as well as plenty of new things to try.

Just as fascinating is the architectural Acanthus spinosus Standing at 1.5m high and with a spread of approximately 90 cm this slightly thuggish plant cannot be ignored. It will be happy in full sun or partial shade. Its enormous glossy deeply lobed leaves are clothed in white flowers with deep purple/green hoods or hats that appear in July to September. Bees love the flowers and they are also great for flower arrangements.

erennial plants are plants that die back seasonally and usually live for three years or more, getting bigger each year. They bring vibrance to our borders and come in every form, texture and colour imaginable.
There are however, some particular perennials that stand out from the crowd more than others - here are some of my favourites.

For a dramatic addition to the border, Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus) is hard to beat. 1m high, silvery grey leaf with a purple thistle-like flower in late summer/ early autumn you simply cannot pass over this plant.
For an early splash of colour and impact in the border you cannot go wrong with the incredible, supersized, silver-veined leaf of Brunnera macrophylla such as ‘Alexander the Great’ and it’s contrasting blue flower in early spring (April to May).
A valuable plant for growing in shady moist parts of the garden. If you want a more compact leaf, try ‘Jack Frost’.

as sea holly, comes in many varieties. Zabelii Big Blue stands at 70 cm high x 60 cm wide and adds zing to the border with its huge blue cones surrounded by a long spiky silvery ruff. Find a sunny spot for this one. Eye-catching Echinacea purpurea ‘Ruby Giant’, the purple coneflower, is simply joyous in a border, with its profusion of huge, fragrant flowers that are like a frilly collar around a deep pink cone. They love the sunshine and their flower heads can reach a whopping 10 cm diameter when they bloom in July to September. There are shorter varieties such as Magnus if you want something more compact. Deadhead the flowers as they fade to encourage more to form but leave the seedheads in autumn for the birds and cut them back the following spring. I love the free-flowering deep burgundy flower of Sanguisorba ‘Tanna’ Burnet against the copper of grasses such as Testacea. This interesting, almost rush-like headed plant loves full sun or partial shade and flowers happily from June to September reaching approximately 50 cm high with a spread of around 40 cm. Hylotelephium Spectabile Sedum Autumn Joy has the most wonderful succulent leaves that capture droplets of water on the surface, turning the water into something that resembles the clearest crystal. Happiest in full sun, this clump-forming perennial grows to approximately 60 cm high with large heads of small star-shaped flowers that open from greenishpink buds that become pale pink, then deep pink, and finally turning to ochre brown. Bees love them! Flowering very late in the season ArgutifoliusHelleborus flowers in late winter and into early spring. It’s nodding pale green bowl-shaped pendent flowers with prickly-edged dark green leaves stand about 50 cm tall and light up the border at a dull time of year in full sun or partial shade. Gaultheria (checkerberry)procumbens makes a wonderful bed partner with its contrasting red berries and deep red, winter foliage which looks stunning against the pale green flowers of the Hellebore. Perennials are pretty undemanding plants. Give them a trim after flowering finishes in autumn, but leave some stems over winter to provide homes and food for wildlife and cut back the following spring.

The details are normally released in September, and again, booking well ahead is vital. Low to no-cost ideas for older kids include geocaching which is a modern-day treasure hunt: simply download the free app and follow the directions to the nearby location, to then find and log the hidden geocache. There are well over a thousand geocaches in and around Aberdeen and the Shire and you can even leave your own. You can get the app via geocaching.com If you’re feeling artistic and don’t mind a bit of a mess, tie dying using a 50/50 mix of bleach and water can yield some interesting results, or you can buy some bright colours to create more of an impact. There are plenty of instructional videos online. Similarly, buying some cheap pre-stretched canvas and some pouring acrylic paints could result in a masterpiece. If making your own entertainment isn’t for you, then there are tons of activities throughout the city and shire that are worth a shot. Many will need to be pre-booked, often well before the holidays begin. Innoflate at the beach, or the trampoline parks at Jump In in Altens or Inverurie’s Skyline might tire them out. Animal lovers might enjoy ponytrekking, or a visit to Ythanbank Reindeer, the aquarium at Macduff, Willowbank Animal Rescue, Wynford Farm or World Horse Rescue at Belwade Farm near Aboyne. If you book well ahead, then there are Pumpkin Patches at Udny Pumpkins and at Charleton Fruit Farm near Montrose. Aden Country Park has Oh Brother Where Art Thou, billed as a Medieval Puzzle for the whole family.
You can have a smashing time at The Wreck It Room on Palmerston Road. Kids are allowed a limited range of weapons to aid in their destruction, but adults have a full selection to choose from. If a fortnight of holiday time all gets too much, perhaps Peterhead Prison Museum is the answer, though they do expect you to take the kids home again.
Garioch Heritage Centre has Brick City in Lego throughout October, while Aberdeen Snowsports offers Younger children can be kept happy with a range of fun, low-cost activities interspersed with the odd day out or trip to the nearest soft play centre. If the weather’s bad, there are plenty of indoor activities like building a blanket fort, an indoor obstacle course or show jumping arena made from upturned pots and pans and garden canes, or playing The Floor is Lava, that will burn off some energy. Old-school scavenger hunts, perhaps gathering objects of a certain colour or shape, painting and drawing, or using a potato to stamp out designs on paper can also be fun.
