When an accident changes your life, knowing what to do next matters. Accidents can happen to anyone.
T
hey can happen during ordinary moments: a trip on a damaged pavement, a fall in a shop, a collision on the school run or an injury at work. In an instant, everyday life can change beyond recognition. If your accident was caused by someone else, you may be entitled to claim financial compensation.
In Scotland, many personal injury claims must be raised within three years, although there are exceptions, so seeking advice early is important. Our team of solicitors can talk you through every step, advise on whether you may have a claim, what evidence may be needed and how costs may be handled.
For many people, the first instinct is to “get on with it”, especially if things seem manageable at first. But symptoms can develop over hours or days, and small details can matter later.
Making a claim is not just about the money. It is about putting support in place when an injury has disrupted your life. Compensation can help with lost earnings, treatment costs, travel expenses and the wider impact of recovery.
The most important step is to look after your health. Seek medical advice, follow treatment recommendations and keep a note of how your injury affects you day to day. It is also sensible to record what happened while it is fresh in your mind. Photographs, witness details, receipts, appointment letters and messages about the incident can all help build a clear picture.
Most of all, do not ignore the effect an accident has had on you. Taking advice early can give you clarity, reassurance and the confidence to focus on getting better. Our friendly team is here to help. If you have been injured and are unsure what to do next, get in touch for a friendly, confidential chat.

Living with endometriosis
HEALTH | 9
F
rom crippling periods to pain when going to the toilet, over 1.5 million women across the UK are living with endometriosis. The chronic condition can be difficult to diagnose; we spoke with GP and co-founder of AberGP, Julie Gray, to find out more about the condition.
What is endometriosis? Endometriosis can impact both your mental and physical health. It occurs when cells similar to those found in the lining of the uterus, grow in other parts of the body. It is often found around the ovaries, fallopian tubes and lining of the pelvis. It can also affect your bladder and bowel, and can even be found in the chest. Doctor Gray explained why it can be so difficult to diagnose. “Symptoms vary considerably between individuals in their nature, location, severity and pattern, and they can change over time,” she said. “Symptoms can also overlap with those of many other, much more common conditions, as well as conditions that need to be excluded more urgently. There isn’t currently a single straightforward test that can reliably diagnose or exclude endometriosis. Some forms of endometriosis can be seen on ultrasound or MRI, but a normal scan does not rule it out. Pain and other symptoms are experienced and described differently by different people. Taken together, this can make endometriosis a challenging diagnosis, even when symptoms have been present for some time.”
“
Advocating It is important to speak up about your symptoms, even if a diagnosis isn’t forthcoming. “If an initial assessment doesn’t identify a clear cause, that doesn’t mean there isn’t one, and it certainly shouldn’t mean that you have to simply live with your symptoms,” said Doctor Gray. “If you are wondering whether your symptoms could be due to endometriosis, it is entirely reasonable to ask, “Could this be endometriosis?” You can also ask what conditions have been considered or excluded, and what the next steps might be if your symptoms continue. If things aren’t improving, it is important to seek further review and let your healthcare team know that the problem is ongoing.”
If an initial assessment doesn’t identify a clear cause, that doesn’t mean there isn’t one, and it certainly shouldn’t mean that you have to simply live with your symptoms,
Symptoms Endometriosis makes itself known because patches of it break down, but are unable to bleed. This means it can’t leave the body. Symptoms often arise during your period, making period pain severe. You could be faced with incredibly heavy periods, with pain in your lower tummy and back. You can also experience pain going to the toilet, and be faced with extreme tiredness.
Treatment There is no one treatment fits all for endometriosis. “Surgery can be an important and effective treatment for some women, particularly when symptoms are severe, significantly affecting quality of life, or when other treatments have not provided adequate relief,” said Doctor Gray. “However, surgery is not necessary or appropriate for everyone, and the extent of endometriosis does not always correlate with the severity of someone’s symptoms. Many women can achieve good symptom control with non-surgical treatments, such as pain relief and hormonal treatments, where these are appropriate and acceptable to them. These approaches are generally less invasive and can be very effective.”

Divorce or separation : what happens to your pets?
Isabelle Douglas, Partner in Family Law at Aberdein Considine LLP
Almost one in two households in Scotland own a pet. But, perhaps surprisingly, family law legislation in Scotland makes no specific provision for what happens to pets when a relationship breaks down. While legal precedent is sparse, we have to look to the law of property to determine ownership. Proof of purchase and intention are important and any formal pet-related documentation may be considered relevant but there is no specific requirement to consider the pet’s welfare. In pet ownership disputes, a few practical issues need to be overcome. Couples may find it difficult long after buying a pet to produce a paper trail for the purchase. Secondly, if it’s jointly owned, mutually acceptable pet care arrangements must be put in place. Finally, if things escalate to litigation, this brings significant legal expenses and increased stress and uncertainty.
person will also spend time with the pet; • how pet care costs are to be met; • which veterinary practice the pet will attend; • the pet’s registered keeper; and • the policy holder on any Pet Plan or pet insurance Couples need to consider carefully where each party is likely to be living, their work commitments and the pet’s age and health. Unlike arrangements for children, a Court is unlikely to have jurisdiction to vary such an Agreement if there is a change in circumstances so it should be robustly “road-tested” before it is signed. Protecting the welfare of our furry friends on separation is a live issue in many jurisdictions and many would agree it’s high time that pets are given special consideration in Scotland, too.
A Cohabitation Agreement or Pre- or Post Nuptial Agreement can make provision for a pet post-separation, eg: • who will care for it and whether the other

Alan Clarke takes Trend behind the scenes at Marcliffe To dine at Marcliffe is to experience five-star service, whether it’s under the sparkling glass dome of Skylark Brasserie, or savouring fine dining in The Conservatory. The beautiful new Skylark Brasserie opened earlier this year, while The Conservatory recently relaunched with a refined menu. Executive Chef, Alan joined the team in Spring and is flourishing in his new role. He told Trend why local suppliers and taking the time to switch off is a recipe for success. “I certainly never set out to become a chef. I originally wanted to join the Army, but unfortunately my asthma meant that was never going to be a career path for me. So, instead, I enrolled on a one-year local hospitality course with some friends and, as they say, the rest is history. The role that probably had the biggest influence on the chef I am today was working under Shirley Spear at The Three Chimneys on Skye. I was part of the team that helped the restaurant retain its 3 Red Rosettes and 1 Michelin Star, and it was a really transformative period in my career. One of the biggest priorities is working with as many local and Scottish suppliers as possible. It’s about bringing the freshest ingredients to the kitchen, keeping food miles as low as we can and then using those ingredients to create something really special on every plate. We actually name our suppliers on the menu, from The Bread Guy in Aberdeen to Amity Fish in Peterhead. Skylark Brasserie is new this year, so it offers a more informal style of dining, while The Conservatory is more focused on fine dining. It gives our guests a choice depending on what kind of experience they’re looking for. Marcliffe provides some of the best challenges I’ve experienced in a job, largely because of the sheer number of different spaces and experiences we’re delivering. Chefs have traditionally worked unbelievable hours, and while the industry is still demanding, I think it’s very important to be able to switch off and get away from the kitchen. Recently, I took the pastry team to Gleneagles to experience it for ourselves and hopefully pick up some ideas and inspiration. They absolutely loved it, and I think those experiences are valuable for them. I’m a dad, so I love spending time with my kids, Finley and Taylor, my partner Hannah and our two dogs. I love eating out as well. I think it’s important as a chef to get out, experience other restaurants and see what other people are doing. The biggest thing is to love what you do. If you don’t love it, don’t do it. It’s a demanding career, often with long hours at the start, so you need to have that passion to keep pushing yourself and getting better.”

Could composting be the secret ingredient to a thriving garden? Read on to find out.
GARDENS | 47
© Shutterstock / Halfpoint
What is Compost? Composting is the natural breakdown of organic matter, such as leaves, vegetable scraps and garden cuttings which turn into a darker, crumbly substance known as compost. It is rich in nutrients that plants enjoy and acts as a natural fertiliser to enhance soil health. The Secret Ingredients Browns: Carbon-rich materials like dry leaves, twigs, shredded cardboard, and paper (not coloured or glossy). With larger leaves such as Beech, it is best to shred these first or consider making leaf mould with these separately by collecting in black bin bags (puncture the bag to let air in) or put into a wire mesh cage and let fungi break them down over one to two years. Greens: Nitrogen-rich materials like vegetable scraps, fruit peels, coffee grounds, and fresh grass clippings. Water: Moisture keeps the microbes alive; your pile should feel like a wrung-out sponge. Air: Oxygen helps aerobic bacteria break down organic matter quickly without creating bad odours. Getting started • Find a well-drained location to position your composter (bought) or compost bay (home-made) in a place where it easy to add-in, turn and remove the decomposing/composted material. • Layer your compost materials, starting with brown materials to ensure are circulation, followed by layers of greens and browns. Make sure that the twigs are no wider than your thumb. • Maintain moisture levels by adding water – aim for the consistency of a wrung-out sponge

• Turn or rotate (depending on what you are using to compost in) regularly every few weeks to speed up the decomposition process and ensure good aeration. • Monitor the temperature to ensure the centre of the compost remains warm, which is an indicator of active decomposition What to avoid • Meat, fish, bones, and dairy products • Oils, grease, and fatty foods • Pet waste (dog or cat manure) • Cooked leftover foods • Diseased plants or weeds with mature seed heads or clippings from Box hedging/topiary • Treated wood or coal ash Alternatively, if you don’t have a large outdoor space for composting you could consider Vermicomposting which fits into small indoor or outdoor bins, doesn’t need turning and is best kept at a cool room, temperature. Vermicomposting uses live composting worms like Red wigglers, who ingest food waste and convert it into worm casts which is generally richer in microbial life. This is more suitable to a modest requirement of compost, if you require bulk quantities, then regular composting is better and more cost-effective. Whilst there may be an initial outlay for your bin (& worms if Vermicomposting), composter or bay, once in place, everything else is free. Composting is recognised as an environmentally friendly practice that not only reduces landfill waste but also enhances garden soil, promoting plant growth and will be super-rich next to a bought compost, so why not have a go!

or more than two decades, North East Open Studios (NEOS) has been bringing artists, makers and audiences together. What began as a small open studios event has grown into a thriving creative community, with more than 250 artists and makers taking part in 2026 across an impressive range of disciplines. Vice chair, Alanda Calmus, told Trend what visitors can expect, with NEOS taking place from the 12th to the 20th of September.
the process rather than the end product. At the heart of NEOS is the belief that creativity thrives through community, connection and collaboration. The event brings artists and audiences together, creates opportunities for creatives to meet and share ideas, and invites visitors into the spaces where creativity happens. Whether that be a converted steading, village hall, or remote rural location – a creative road trip is ready and waiting.
“NEOS offers a rare opportunity where for nine days only, artists and makers across Aberdeenshire, Moray, Angus and the surrounding areas will open their studios to the public. Visitors will be able to travel from studio to studio, meeting artists and discovering original work. From printing to jewellery, painting and textiles, this is the opportunity to experience art like never before.” The beauty of a half-finished piece, tools and sketches - NEOS invites you to embrace
There is a wealth of creative practice to soak in, from painting, ceramics and jewellery to textiles, photography, sculpture and much more. “It’s a chance to discover artists you may not have come across before, see where they work and find out a little more about the people and ideas behind what they make. Much of the work that makes NEOS possible happens behind the scenes. The organisation is run by a volunteer committee who work
throughout the year to organise the event, produce the catalogue, support members with promotion and develop opportunities that help strengthen the creative community across the region. As a volunteer-led organisation, NEOS is keen to hear from people who have an interest in supporting the arts and the creative community, whether or not they are artists themselves. The organisation is continuing to look at how it can develop and strengthen its future, including the transition towards becoming a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO). This is an exciting stage in NEOS’s development, but one that needs new skills, ideas and people willing to get involved. If you have time, experience or simply a passion for supporting creativity in the North-east, there could be a place for you within the NEOS community.” To find out more and see this year’s programme, go to northeastopenstudios.co.uk

Rothiemurchus makes for perfect family escape
© Shutterstock / KataThomson
Earlier this year I was lucky enough to head to Majorca with my young family. Having touched back down in Aberdeen, I swore not to go abroad for another five years following a week of toddler meltdowns. So it was with great trepidation that we set off on another trip. We made our way to Rothiemurchus and I can safely say, we absolutely adored our stay. It turns out that my kids didn’t need an all inclusive in the sun. They needed a truly special adventure on Scottish soil. Rothiemurchus Estate can be found within walking distance of Aviemore, making it the perfect location to explore everything this stunning area has to offer. Described by none other than Sir David Attenborough as “one of the glories of Wild Scotland,” I can confirm it lives up to the hype. Rothiemurchus stretches from Scotland’s third highest mountain, Braeriach, to the River Spey at Aviemore – making it the gateway to the Cairngorms.

Its history alone is remarkable, not least because it has been cared for by people for centuries. From the softness of the pine forests to the tranquillity of Loch an Eilein, it’s not difficult to see why people are so inspired to do their bit for this splendid corner of the world. There are numerous accommodation options available on the Estate, and we stayed in The Garden Flat. It was the perfect size, with two bedrooms and an open plan kitchen/lounge area which overlooked a beautiful walled garden. You can order delicious local produce from the farm shop, which made for a slap-up breakfast. I came home with shares in black current jam and have no regrets. The estate stables is a mere stone’s throw from your front door, and there is a large green which is perfect for little ones to run about on. There are numerous activities available to book, so you’ll never hear the dreaded “I’m bored” chant. If you do one thing, make it the Feed the Deer Experience. To watch my eight-year old’s face as stags thundered across the hill, he was in awe as were we. You’re accompanied to see these magnificent red deer by a knowledgeable ranger, who showed my eldest how to gently stroke the velvety antlers. It was such a wonderful experience to be up so close to these stunning creatures, which are of course iconic of Scotland. We also did the hairy coo safari, where we
met the Helian coos and discovered the role they play on the estate. We were able to cook thanks to the well-equipped kitchen back at The Garden Flat, but we also had a lovely meal at the Cairngorm Hotel in Aviemore. The Wee Legends menu kept the kids happy, and I’m still thinking about the mouthwatering scampi. A visit to Aviemore isn’t complete with a day out at Landmark, which seems to get better every time we go. The amazing forest adventure zone is set to open soon, complete with a six-lane toboggan run. It’s no wonder that Landmark has been crowned one of the UK’s top visitor attractions, and it’s the perfect place to go all year round. The Ancient Forest Twi-LIGHTS experience is set to make a return in November, where you can immerse yourself in the enchanting ancient pinewood forest, illuminated by thousands of lights, sounds and effects. We truly had a wonderful stay and can’t wait to return, this time with our Labrador pup. Several holiday snaps have already been framed, which really does say it all.

I would love them to have a strong work ethic, as I definitely picked this up from my own parents. I always feel that I enjoy my work/baking days as it is time to myself in the kitchen, and then I can be more present and enjoy my days with my children even more so. They do love opening the honesty box cake shed each day, I never expected it to be quite as busy! I have such a loyal following of customers from 11 years of farmer’s markets and annual events. Bakery Lane began almost 11 years ago. I was living in London at the time and whilst I loved the lifestyle, I knew that I wanted to be home in Aberdeen. I decided to set up From Bakery Lane and it has been none stop ever since. I became a mum four years ago to my daughter, Mollie, and I also have Freddie who is one. I have tried to condense my working hours, although inevitably I do end up baking once they’re in bed or when my husband is home at the weekends. My highlights in motherhood have definitely been travelling with our children, seeing their excitement at visiting other cultures and experiencing even the smallest adventures - camping or

Charity Focus
calls on volunteers in bid to support mums When Gill Skene had her first child, she realised there was a lack of support within communities and set about to change it. What started off as mums meeting for a chat has evolved to become LATNEM. The charity helps hundreds of mums every year, both across the North-east and beyond. Gill explained why their work is so invaluable, and what you can do to help. “Navigating mental health challenges during motherhood can feel isolating, but no mum has to walk that path alone. With recent MBRRACE reports highlighting that suicide remains the leading cause of direct maternal death in the year after pregnancy, supporting maternal mental health is more important than ever. LATNEM Peer Support is a dedicated mental health peer support service created by and for mums. Based in Aberdeenshire, LATNEM hosts support groups across Grampian and offers a virtual support service that connects mums across the whole of Scotland.
We also run special events like crochet or painting ‘crafternoons’ and baby yoga. Participants find kindness, meaningful relationships, and practical ideas to help them make positive changes and move forward in their journey. Every service at LATNEM is completely free of charge, ensuring that support is accessible to anyone who needs it. To keep these vital services running and expanding, we are actively looking for compassionate volunteers to support local face-to-face meetings in Aberdeen, Elgin, Huntly, Inverurie and Peterhead - as well as hosting our online meetings on zoom. Full role specific training is provided to all volunteers, including opportunities to gain a recognised qualification such as Mental Health First Aid.” If you are a mum with lived experience of mental ill health and are ready to use your experience and passion to support local mums, LATNEM would love to hear from you. DOCTOR SIOBHAN HEWSON
T
here is a particular kind of trust that forms between a patient and their dentist; quiet, time-honoured, and not easily transferred. Which is precisely why, when a practice changes hands, the question every patient really wants answered is not about equipment or opening hours. It is: who is this person, and can I trust her with my teeth? On both counts, the answer at The Terrace Clinic is reassuring. It is impossible not to smile when listening to Dr Siobhan Hewson, for smiles are her currency after all. We caught up with Dr Siobhan and discovered why her can do attitude could be the secret ingredient to her success. “Dentistry and aesthetics will all be under one roof, after the opportunity came up to buy a dental clinic on Rubislaw Terrace. The Terrace Clinic will have a comprehensive offering of both dentistry and aesthetics. I remember thinking to myself, if I do not take a chance then I will live to regret it”. Dr Siobhan Hewson has become only the fourth (and first female) owner in sixty years of the practice at 19b Rubislaw Terrace, a record that speaks to something most modern dental chains could never offer: genuine roots. She is not an investor, not a group, and certainly not a temporary appointment. She is a dentist who has built her career in London and Aberdeen, who lectures the next generation of dentists at Aberdeen University, and who has two young children growing up in the North-east. She is, in every meaningful sense, here to stay. She loves her work and supporting her patients saying that “Not only
can you diagnose and help patients, you then give them what they need and see the same patient in six months’ time to ensure continuity of care”. It is a long-term view that runs through everything Dr Hewson does. Root canal treatment is her clinical niche, and she is often referred to by other dentists for particularly complex cases. “I always consider treatment long term as opposed to a quick win,” she says. “What will enable a patient to both look and feel good ten years from now?” For existing patients of the practice, the message is straightforward: your care continues without interruption. Your records, your treatment plans, your team all remaining in place. What changes is the name above the door and, with it, a continuing investment in the clinic beginning, characteristically, with a state-of-the-art 3D scanner and microscope for ensuring quality and cutting-edge care. For new patients, the opportunity is the chance to join a practice that combines the intimacy and continuity of genuine independent dentistry with a clinical offering (general dentistry, advanced endodontics, and medical-grade facial aesthetics) that is rare to find under one roof, and rarer still to find led by a single, named clinician of this calibre. Dr Hewson describes herself as someone who has never been a ‘what if’ person. Standing outside 19b Rubislaw Terrace holding the keys, the logic of her decision is plain. Sixty years of trust, now in its next chapter. She cannot wait to get started.
