Welcome to our eighth birthday issue of Trend. Over that time, we’ve quadrupled our circulation and the magazine is more than twice as big as when we started. We’d like to send a big hug to all our readers and to our fabulous advertisers who’ve supported us since day one. While everything’s rosy at Trend, summer proved a bit of a disappointment - more washout than heatwave. There were precious few days when the temperature climbed high enough to abandon the furry boots for sandals and shorts. While some sunshine would have been nice, the next few months showcase many of the things that are best about our corner of the world. With cyclical dip in oil prices dominating the local headlines, it’s easy to forget how lucky we are in the city and shire. There’s a lot more to us than oil. We’ve seen the prices head south before and we’ve come back stronger each time. We’re a cosmopolitan and confident region, with a heritage rich in fishing, farming, food, history, technology, education, arts and creativity. Don’t give in to the doom and the drizzle. Get out and about, try something new or just revisit some old favourites. Head for the hills or stroll along the sands and reconnect with the fabulous scenery and heritage that abounds. Layer up and live it up!

FRESH STYLE IN THE HEART OF THE CITY

Linton & Mac, a fabulous new hair salon on Netherkirkgate, is already gaining fans for the winning combination of an eclectic interior, friendly atmosphere, knowledgeable staff and great results. Creative directors Joanna MacDonald and Jennifer Linton have a wealth of experience after previously working at some of the city’s top salons, and wanted to make their own salon truly special. The girls have combined minimalist bespoke fittings and online finds to create a unique setting, which makes the funky salon feel as if you’ve been transported to London or New York.

She’s also great at styling and permanent blow dries. Jennifer has also been a Trend Visions finalist and specialises in flattering cuts, extensions and bridal hair.

Jennifer have plans to add a range of men’s grooming services in the coming months. Jennifer explained: 'We want our customers to feel special from the moment they come into the salon. We want everyone who steps into the salon to have an enjoyable, up-beat experience, and leave with fabulous hair. It’s all about the Linton & Mac experience.'

Welcomed by a comfortable open lounge area, the salon boasts a rustic chic vibe, which is complimented by the house music played throughout the salon. You can also try out the raised styling area called The Bar where you can have a complimentary drink or two as the team treat you to the full on Linton & Mac experience whilst getting you ready for a night on the town. The whole atmosphere is extremely relaxed.

Joanna added: 'We wanted to keep things affordable for our clients, while offering cuts that range from the classic to more adventurous looks. It’s a high end salon, without the high end prices not to mention our refreshments menu is fantastic.'

Joanna is a previous UK finalist in Wella’s Trend

There are no unbreakable style commandments from the catwalk this season: Ralph Lauren has a primitive luxe take on Lapland nomads, all leathers, wool and fur, while Dolce & Gabbana showed jewel sequined, rose embroidered tulle. Versace have opted for Haute Eurotrash bodycon tailoring with cut outs. None could be adopted wholeheartedly without causing comment in the office. Overall, the key look is one of restrained luxury and demure opulence. Look for well-fitting, well-tailored pieces in natural or luxurious fabrics. It’s worth splashing out on a good autumn/winter coat which will last several years. Look for well-cut cashmere or wool in a classic shade of black, navy or camel. Red cuts a dash and works well with many neutrals and will cheer you up. This year’s styles are tending towards longer lengths and it’s worth spending a few extra pounds to have the sleeves and hems tailored to suit.

Other wardrobe staples worth spending money on are boots, knitwear and handbags. Take your style cues from Coach, Tod’s and Max Mara for a classic look. Look for premium quality leather and suede and choose accessories carefully for a polished finish. Add a dash of élan with brighter gloves and scarves. For boots, over the knee styles worn with a mini remain in vogue, but work best for the taller woman. Lace up boots and chunkier heels are in evidence in knee length and ankle boots, with ladylike styles making a comeback for shoes. Black’s back, with a dramatic neo-gothic edge, often augmented with embroidery or rich detailing. Head to toe white is also having a moment, but may prove impractical for everyday living. Bright colours, naturals and rich garnets are taking over from pastels, which are too girlie to compete with duller weather.

with Sheena Smith of Finnies The Jeweller Watch winders have been growing in popularity at Finnies the Jeweller. If you have invested in a quality watch or perhaps don’t wear yours often, then it is an ideal option. Winders are used to store an automatic (self-winding) mechanical watch and keep it going when the wearer isn’t using it by rotating clockwise, anti-clockwise or sometimes a mixture of the two. They can range from a simple ‘cube’ type box for one watch, to double, triple, and multiple watch boxes which are available in a variety of styles. Some are purely winders, while others have more storage for additional watches or jewellery too. 36

The cost of some winders runs into the thousands, but our bestseller, the WOLF ‘cub’ winder is £125 and comes in a variety of colours. Their functionality and desirability makes winders the perfect gift. Sheena Smith is a senior watch specialist in the watch department of Finnies the Jeweller. The family run business, based on George Street in Aberdeen, has a portfolio of 25 watch brands which range in price from under £100 to £35,000+. www.finniesjewellers.co.uk

Chef Craig Wilson from Eat on the green has some tasty advice for autumn... When the dark nights draw in, it's tempting to grab a takeaway or slam a ready meal in the oven. A little planning ahead and a slow cooker will result in healthier and tastier meals without any fuss.

Soups, stews and casseroles are obvious choices. Using a slow cooker means you can experiment with cheaper cuts of meat, such as beef or pork cheeks, blade or shoulder. The lower temperature and slow cooking results in mouthwateringly tender meat and fills the house with a homely, nostalgic smell. Try it with a sweet potato, garlic and chilli mash which will cheer up an autumnal night. Especially if you have a wee glass of red, which is good for the soul and, of course, your health.

Perusing the menu with a luscious glass of prosecco, my husband and I learned that we’d be enjoying dishes created by new chef, Rico. Blending traditional fare with fine dining, Rico’s dishes are made with his own creative flare and come elegantly presented. I was keen to try something a little out of my normal foodie zone and the starter crab toast was just the thing. Served on little pallets of toasted bread, it was delicious and fresh. My husband ventured forth with the carrot and coriander soup, a zingy and tasty little number.

Adamant that he had no more room for dessert, my husband was persuaded to try Rico’s dessert version of a Jaffa Cake whilst I went for the soft and creamy arctic ice-cream roll. I awaited my husband’s verdict as he sampled his own dessert with accompanying orange sorbet. He polished it all off before putting down his spoon and exclaiming, ‘it really does taste like a Jaffa Cake!’ As they say, a full man is a happy man, and we both left Amicus Apple feeling stuffed and content.

Chef Focus

Banchory Lodge's Scott Stephen

Meet Scott Stephen, head chef at Banchory Lodge and a man with a passion for fine food, fresh produce and... Jack Bauer

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN COOKING? I started working professionally 15 years ago as a commis chef at another local hotel, but I suppose my passion for food and produce would have come from both my grannies who were very good homely cooks.

IF YOU COULD INVITE ANY THREE PEOPLE TO DINNER - REAL, FICTIONAL, PAST, PRESENT WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY? The first person I would invite for dinner is Fraser Rodman, my sous chef. Without him many of the things we achieve day to day in the kitchen would be impossible to do, so it would be nice to say thank you. The second guest would be Jack Bauer from the TV

show 24, which is probably one of my favourite shows. Watching box sets of the show is a good way to relax after a long day at work. That guy is quite possibly the only guy in the world that can do more in 24 hrs than a chef! And finally, Sophie my 2 year old daughter as she is the main reason I get out of bed and do this job. WHAT WOULD YOU SERVE THEM? Fish ‘n’ chips

WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS AS A CHEF? Keep learning, developing and honing my skills and technique to keep pushing the business forward.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT WORKING IN FOOD? AND LEAST? What I enjoy best is working with stunning fresh produce. We are very lucky to have such a vast larder of ingredients in this county to choose from and work with on a daily basis. I can’t think of a negative side to working in this business.

a nice golden colour then cook for 2 mins on the other side. Remove from pan and place on a baking tray in a hot oven at 180Ëšc for 3-4 min or until the bone starts to protrude at the top end of the fish. Remove from the oven and allow to rest.

Then smear in soft butter on the presentation side.

Clean and halve the mushrooms, sautĂŠ in butter until tender, add the blanched asparagus and capers, warm through and pour over

Use a good quality non-stick pan big enough for the whole fish, get the oil hot and place the sole in butter side down. Be careful as the hot fat may splash. Cook for 2-3 min on that side until you get

the fish. Serve with garden salad, steamed potatoes or fries.

WORDS BY COURTNEY O'GRADY

DARREN HAWKES When the BBC’s coverage of the 2015 RHS Chelsea Flower Show began, the first garden to grace television screens across the country was the Brewin Dolphin Show Garden, created by landscape designer Darren Hawkes. Darren’s garden incorporated over 40,000 handcut slates, ancient stones, floating monuments, an underground stream and a combination of wild plants and mature trees that ultimately won him a prestigious Gold Medal. Trend caught up with Darren at a recent Brewin Dolphin presentation in Aberdeen. WHAT INSPIRED YOUR DESIGN? I wanted a breakaway space, something different, but something to reflect Brewin Dolphin’s heritage. I wanted a fun, curious space but with a sense of the past, of permanence. The garden forms were inspired by prehistoric monoliths and the planting created the look of a woodland garden full of wild, fragile summertime plants.

platforms create a dramatic contrast to the familiar herbaceous perennials among them. WHAT MAKES THE CHELSEA FLOWER SHOW SO SPECIAL? Chelsea is like the Glastonbury of the gardening world. It is a festival of all that’s best in horticulture. And it is a privilege to work with so many consummate professionals. HOW DID YOU GET INTO GARDENING? It came from an intense love of nature. And I have always loved the effect that an arrangement of objects within a space can have on you. My love of plants came later.

HOW DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR MATERIALS? I live

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR BEAUTIFUL GARDEN AFTER THE SHOW? It is sad to see the garden dismantled but Brewin Dolphin very kindly donated the plants to a respite home in Stirling run by the Eilidh Brown Memorial Fund. The structural pieces have been re-erected at Tremenheere Sculpture Garden in Penzance.

If there’s one thing that makes a great hotel, it’s excellent customer service... n a competitive job market, many hotels suffer from high levels of staff turnover or inexperienced management teams. That’s where Diana MacKenzie of KMG Management’s vast expertise can make the difference between an average hotel and a truly great one. 'I started working as a waitress just before I turned sixteen and over the years, I worked my way up through various roles until I took a series of General Manager positions in Aberdeen and beyond,' Diana noted. Indeed, Diana’s CV includes key roles at many well-known four and five star venues across the country, from Kelso to Inverness. 'I soon found my passion was helping to turn round team and individual performance, easing new management into their roles or providing interim general management. So I started my own consultancy company providing bespoke advice for hotel owners, hospitality training, one-to-one coaching, troubleshooting and help for general managers. 'Hotels are in my blood', Diana continued, 'I believe in Quality, Service and Standards - the customer’s experience is of paramount importance, even more so in the age of social media. I love seeing people and businesses blossom'. KMG has branched out into providing consultancy services for catering operations in large companies with underutilised canteen facilities and an office cleaning division, with a team of 12 housekeeping staff who provide high quality cleaning services for Oil Company offices, hotels, corporate lets and domestic properties, all conducted under Diana’s personal supervision. ANOTHER FRESH IDEA!

NEW CATEGORIES ANNOUNCED FOR 2016 OFFSHORE ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS The 2016 Offshore Achievement Awards (OAAs) were launched during SPE Offshore Europe in September, and include a number of new categories which will give more businesses and individuals than ever before the opportunity to be recognised for their outstanding work. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the awards and a number of new categories have been introduced. These

Joyce Scott, managing director of Aberdeen web development and marketing agency Fresh Ideas, has diversified into the food & drink industry. Joyce started the new venture, called All About Lemons, in April and has reported that demand has been high at local Farmers’ Markets for her fresh lemon curd, fudge, cakes and soups. Joyce’s Fresh Ideas team was responsible for developing the new brand and website whilst Joyce makes all the fresh produce herself along with hand-picking a luxury gift range of lemon-related products from companies such as the Isle of Skye Candle Company and Scottish Fine Soaps. Joyce says, 'I’d been thinking about launching the new company for a while and as this year is Scotland’s Year of Food & Drink it seemed the perfect time to do it. My signature product is lemon curd which I’ve been making for friends and family for years. It’s a very old-fashioned preserve that many young people have never tried. The response I’ve had from people sampling it has been phenomenal and we have been sold out at almost every market.' www.allaboutlemons.co.uk

Ian Phillips, chief executive of the Oil and Gas Innovation Centre and the SPE Aberdeen board member responsible for the OAAs, said; ‘Collaboration, innovation and making efficiencies are focal areas for the UK oil and gas industry in the current climate, and the OAAs recognise companies and individuals developing new ideas, initiatives and ways of working which will ensure the long-term future of the industry.

‘Despite a troubled year for the oil and gas sector, there are still many success stories to be heard and the Offshore Achievement Awards is the premier forum in which to share these. Likewise, there is much to celebrate in the UK’s world-leading offshore renewables sector and these successes will be given the same priority as those within oil and gas.’ Entries from UK-registered companies operating within the renewables or the oil and gas industry are now open and will close on 1st December 2015. The black tie ceremony will take place at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre on Thursday, 17th March 2016. For further information and entry criteria, please visit www.spe-oaa.org

TRAVEL |

If you need a quick getaway, it’s easy to settle for a weekend city break in Paris, London or Amsterdam, but with a little creative thinking and a bit of planning ahead, there are more enticing options for a flying visit. Here’s a few of our favourites… Madrid Spain’s capital is a world away from the cheap and cheerful Costas, and has a totally different vibe to Barcelona. Grand buildings, a buzzing nightlife, world class galleries and a packed menu of interesting bars and restaurants make it a great choice for a busy weekend. You can also chill in the city’s squares and parks or take a day trip to the charming medieval town of Toledo, or take in a football match at Real Madrid’s Bernabéu stadium - almost guaranteed to be warmer than Pitoddrie.

Skellefteå Admittedly this one involves flying via Stockholm, but it’s worth it. Skellefteå is a brilliant small city, at the southern edge of Swedish Lapland, with plenty of quirky little shops, natural and cultural attractions and serious bragging rights. Just 200km short of the Arctic Circle, winters are cold and dark, meaning plenty of layers and the chance to snuggle. Outdoors types will revel in the 76

SKELLEFTEÅ

opportunity to fish, go dog-sledding, ski cross country or try a sauna followed by a dip in an icy lake.

Pula Low key and relaxed, Pula is situated on the Croatian Adriatic. It’s a great option for a chilled out, slow paced weekend. Immerse yourself in the city’s amazing Roman ruins or explore the region’s winemaking heritage. If you fancy something more energetic, try sailing, snorkelling or even skydiving. Pula is known for its mild climate, sheltering hills and calm sea, perfect for recharging your batteries and getting away from it all.

Venice There’s a lot to be said for Venice in Winter, when most of the tourists are gone and you can wander the ancient streets and explore the canals in relative peace. February sees the city come alive for Carnivale season, a romantic riot of heaving bosoms and

PULA

masked costumed balls. Explore the grand Palazzos, St. Mark's and, the Doge’s Palace, or just get lost in the warren of back streets. Murano, the nearby island home to artisan glass makers, is worth a trip on the city’s waterbuses and Burano is a charming little island. Food isn’t Venice’s forte, since the sheer volume of tourists mean many venues are overpriced and under-inspired, but don’t miss the chance to see the sun go down over a Bellini or two at Harry’s Bar.

VENICE

and some solid eastern european fare. Like Venice, the city spans several islands, joined by bridges, so it’s easy to explore on foot. It’s perfect for a boys' weekend, since there are a lot of artisan breweries, beer halls and brewpubs, hearty sausage-based cuisine, and a museum dedicated to Allied prisoners of war on the site of the prison camp made famous by The Great Escape.

After buying a home, a car is often one of the most expensive purchases we make. It should be a pleasurable experience, but many buyers find it frustrating. Each of the three hundred or so used cars in stock has been personally sourced by Steve Innes, I&K Motors managing director. The cars are arranged in seven price zones, ranging from £4000 to £40000, so there’s always a great selection of quality assured vehicles to choose from - vital if you’re shopping for a newly licensed son or daughter in need of

an insurance-friendly, first car with a good safety rating. There’s even a section for automatic vehicles, with a choice of eighty or so cars and an excellent aftersales service. There’s never any hard sell and Steve’s expert staff are friendly and approachable. As Steve puts it, 'We’re happy to show people as many vehicles as they like. If someone needs to test drive several cars to help them decide, no problem. We know it’s an important decision and what we want is not to make a quick sale, but to make a happy customer. We have a high level of repeat business and it’s not unknown for us to serve three generations of the same family'. I&K Motors can also source any new vehicle on your behalf, often at a more competitive price than a main dealership, particularly if you have desirable part exchange vehicle.

For lovers of live music, Aberdeen has a thriving scene, and venues across the city are putting together line ups to entice us to gigs this autumn. THE BLUE LAMP When it comes to jazz, the Blue Lamp lights the way. There are performances every Thursday from the Michael Janisch Quartet, New Focus Quartet, the delightfully named Ugly Bug Ragtime Three, Iain Ewing, Colin Steele and the Philip Clouts Quartet. You can catch two local bands on the first Sunday of the month as part of their Jazz on a Sunday Afternoon series. Taking to the stage on October 4th will be singer Vance Adair and Fraser Peterkin’s Soul Jazz Collective. November 1 will see the Bill Kemp Trio hit the stage and Aberdeen’s first lady of jazz, Marisha Addison. www.jazzatthebluelamp.com ONE DIAMOND STREET For late night entertainment, One Diamond Street has a bounty of live music each Friday and Saturday night creating the perfect atmosphere in its stylish cocktail lounge. For something more visceral, The Tunnels provides a unique subterranean concert venue and will be welcoming Wheatus, Sleaford Mods and The Sherlocks this Autumn. www.onediamondstreet.co.uk

Miniature painter Jenny Musker may produce some of the smallest works of ar t you’ve seen, but there’s no doubting she has a huge talent… Jenny, who combines her work as a scientific and natural history illustrator with a passion for amazing miniature landscapes and wildlife studies, has an unrivalled eye for detail. Some of her works are the size of a postage stamp. All are characterised by their immaculate draftsmanship and brushwork. Originally from Liverpool, she now lives and has her studio in Peterculter. 'It’s wonderful to spend so much time outdoors in the Scottish countryside observing the local wildlife. It is a privileged moment when you see an animal in its natural habitat and I love to reproduce it for others to enjoy,' Jenny explained. 86

'I use mainly watercolour, gouache and pencil, since they allow me to work in fine detail. I exhibit locally and internationally and also offer original works and limited edition prints via my website. 'I have been a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors and Gravers for over 10 years, and will be taking part in their show in London this October. I’m also fortunate enough to have had my work recognised internationally, winning prizes in several countries. 'Miniature painting has a long history and is often associated with portraits. Being small and

easily transportable, they were even used to broker royal marriage negotiations after the groom had seen a miniature painting of the potential bride. Miniatures were often used as tokens of friendship, loyalty and love. I like to think that tradition continues when people buy my work as a gift for their loved ones. 'Outdoor activities play a big part in my painting career. I’m often out with my camera and sketchpad when I’m walking. I never quite know what my next composition will be until it jumps out at me, or I stumble over it!' www.jennymusker.co.uk

They say it’s the thought that counts, so why not make some special Christmas gifts for family, friends and neighbours this year? Whether you fancy a hand-made Christmas stocking filled with little treats, or some heirloom decorations for the tree - there are plenty of ways to get creative this Christmas.

Now’s the time to get started, so we’ve rounded up some of the best new books to help you plan your projects…

HANDMADE CHRISTMAS, from Cico Books, has over 35 step by step projects including decorations, cards and food gifts. There are plenty of templates and projects for children, from DIY snow globes using jam jars and glitter, to elegant Swedish Dala horse candleholders from tin sheeting.

POMPOM CHRISTMAS by Alistair Macdonald has twenty appealing ideas for decorations and gifts made from leftover wool. Once you have the knack, pompoms are simple to make and have a certain retro charm. Try a festive wreath, adorable angels or snowmen for the tree or a cute Scottie Dog as a gift.

It’s worth dusting off your sewing machine for Debbie Shore’s HALF YARD GIFTS and HALF YARD CHRISTMAS, both have gorgeous projects that don’t take much time using fabric remnants. Try making some cute robin bunting, felt gift bags, or simple but special tablemats and runners.

Sue Stratford’s MERRY CHRISTMAS SWEATERS TO KNIT has designs for adults and children which will appeal to the experienced knitter. The patterns come with detailed charts for knitting Nordic designs, Santas, puddings, trees and all manner of festive jollities. If, like me, you still haven’t finished the mittens you started in Primary Seven, the designs are a bit ambitious, but anyone who wields their needles with confidence should find much to appeal.

Presents, sorted!

Some professionals consider the skills of their trade to be a closely guarded secret, not to be shared with others. But I have always believed that the great among us are those who freely impart their knowledge, confidently accepting that their own talents do not preclude others from sharing those talents as well. One such person runs a successful floristry business on Holburn Street and has come up with a fresh idea for sharing her artistry. Kim Dalglish and her fantastic team started the Kim Dalglish Flower School eighteen months ago just next door to her thriving shop. Through the school,

88

Kim runs huge variety of workshops - with topics including hand tied bouquets, arrangements, corsage work and even bridal for beginners, designed to turn just about anyone into a budding florist, if only for the night. Several of us from Trend attended a recent class to see if we could unearth our own green thumbs.

It's straight down to business, armed with everything from floral wire to a stapler, everyone was tasked with creating their own arrangement, to be taken home and hopefully bragged about for weeks to follow.

being stripped, leaves being trimmed, and voices enthusiastically encouraging one another. The end result exceeded all expectations not only was each arrangement beautiful, each was as unique as the person who had created it.

Over the course of the next two hours, Kim and Sarah offered their expert tutelage in bite-size pieces, providing guidance on design and technique in the same way that a floral display gets assembled, one section at a time. The studio buzzed with the sound of thorns

There is little doubt that I will be attending Kim’s Flower School again in future. Aside from the obvious benefits of learning something new, this fantastic night out is so thoughtful, it sends you flowers.

Into the Hills Although people often speak about the importance of striking an optimum work-life balance, the introduction of smartphones and other portable technologies has created a virtual workplace that can be almost impossible to escape from. For some, the only way to truly leave work behind is to find a hideaway that is devoid of wi-fi and beyond the reach of cellular networks. Keith McDougall of McDougall Mountaineering knows just the place. As a former Airborne trained British Army Officer, Keith has always found his balance by switching off and escaping into the hills, usually in the Cairngorms National Park. A fully qualified Mountain Leader and avid outdoorsman, Keith began leading expeditions into the mountains six years ago but only recently decided to turn his passion into a full-time job. Keith’s business model? To introduce as many people as possible to the wonder of the Scottish Highlands, and not just the wellbeaten paths. With enjoyment as a key deliverable, Keith is

90

keen to impart his own enthusiasm for proper exploration of this vast playground by offering instruction in map reading, navigation and equipment handling. Guided expeditions for private or corporate groups can be tailored to suit all ability levels with everything from gear to transportation from Aberdeen being supplied. Whether you prefer a straightforward day walk or a multi-day escapade complete with scrambling, fell running and wild camping, Keith’s expertise will ensure that your outing is as safe as it is exciting. The mountains are nature’s treadmills, but without the membership fees. Trekking can act as a giant reset button - with every bead of sweat shed, so goes a bit of life’s stress. There is no denying that it is hard work but usually the toughest challenges in life are the most rewarding. Don’t believe me? Just ask any of McDougall Mountaineering’s clients and they are sure to tell you the same. www.mcdougallmountaineering.co.uk

In an age when the power and availability of digital information is on a seemingly unstoppable trajectory, it might seem that major investment in a bricks and mortar library would be foolhardy. Luckily, the former Principal of the University of Aberdeen, Sir Duncan Rice, did not share that view. Today, the Sir Duncan Rice Library is one of the most visually striking buildings in Aberdeen. Standing at the west end of the university campus since 2012, the exterior consists of reams of asymmetrical opaque and glass panels joined together to create the illusion of shimmering ice, as was the vision of the library’s firm of Danish architects. Pass through the doors of the Sir Duncan Rice Library and the view is like nothing you have ever seen before. The ground floor consists of an enormous two-storey public space and cafÊ, but you are forgiven for overlooking that at first, as your attention will be immediately drawn to the swirling vortex of clean

white lines that rise and rise above you, joining all eight levels of the library into one seamless, almost animate, flow from foundation to roof. But do not let this magnificent feat of design distract you from what lies at the heart of this building - the library. With modern collections sprawling over seven different levels and an internationally important Special Collections Centre, the comprehensive assortment of books and manuscripts on display dates back as far as the third century. Add to that over a thousand spaces for group and individual study supported by state-ofthe-art information technology, and it is no wonder that more than 700,000 people visit the Sir Duncan Rice Library each year. With this building, the University of Aberdeen has sympathetically combined the past with the future of learning, in a way that hopefully ensures that institutions like libraries will be with us for a very long time indeed. www.abdn.ac.uk

WORDS BY RYAN SWINNEY

We sent Trend’s lead designer Ryan Swinney off to Avonbridge near Falkirk to experience the thrill of Autograss... I’m never one to pass up the chance to pretend to be a combination of the Stig and Dick Dastardly from Wacky Races. Autograss is a fun and fast-growing motorsport, where competitors race round a quarter mile oval track. It’s genuinely exciting and compared to most competitive motorsports it’s easy to get started and relatively inexpensive. The track is laid out on grass and there are a dozen different adult classes and a few for juniors over the course of the day. Everyone has a great time and the fast pace makes it an enjoyable spectator sport too. As a complete beginner, I drove one of Scottish Autograss’s hire cars, complete with GoPro camera. These can be booked, giving newcomers the opportunity to try the sport. You don’t get that with F1. My race car, complete with window grids, roll cage and

92

a battery of safety checks, was a ferocious, high powered, one litre Nissan Micra! Vroom! A few practice laps got me comfortable handling all that power and provided a bit of reassurance before competing against my fellow drivers, many of whom had years of experience. Lining up with the cars on either side of you, the excitement really kicks in and you can’t help but join in the fun by giving the car a few revs to make the other drivers shake in their seats. The race began with the wind and dirt flying through the roll cage as several cars mysteriously managed to get ahead of me. Adrenaline surges as the cars jockey for position- a few laps is never enough! The thrill intensified as I over took another driver, leaving him inhaling the cloud of dirt I left in my wake. Second last felt like a victory to me! Watch Ryan’s race at www.tinyurl.com/ppoqjd5 For more information contact Scott on 07971 028981 or visit www.scottishautograss.co.uk

WINTER WARMERS Step outside in style this winter with technical fabrics and layering to keep you cosy. A decent padded jacket and cosy fleeces often form the core of the North-east wardrobe, so investing in practical, well cut versions makes good sense. Look for slim cut jackets that cover the hips and have a good level of insulation. Down is amazingly light and warm, but technical fillings work

well too. If you go for a puffed jacket, look for something that suggests Action Man rather than Michelin Man when you glance at your reflection. With rugged masculine styling and a subdued colour palette relieved by flashes of orange and red, it’s a look that can take you from the hills to a casual night out with ease. Better yet, it’ll keep you looking good, warm and dry...

Leafing through the racks of Spiderman tops, and sugar-pink scratchy, sparkly dresses and you’d be forgiven for thinking there’s something quite strange going on with children’s clothing. The main options seem to be acting as a walking billboard for the latest animated film franchise or looking like a tiny version of a desperately attention seeking z-list celebrity. Isn’t it time to start letting them dress and play like children again? Here’s our pick of the best clothes and toys for little ones, all with a natural or green slant…

Powell Craft have been making charming retro-inspired clothes for children for decades, but until now, the nearest place you could buy them was in Perthshire. They’ve just launched a consumer website at www.powellcraft.com, so snap up these delight woodland creature pyjamas. Talking of gorgeous creatures, we’re smitten by this warthog from www.borngifted.co.uk which is handmade by Barefoot Toy’s female artisans in Sri Lanka form organic cotton, woven and dyed on the island. JoJo Maman Bébé have found a brilliant use for old plastic bottles, which are recycled to produce the

96

washable polyester fabric for this striped all in one fleece romper. Find it at Union Square or online at www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk We loved these natural latex bath boats from www.thekidwho.eu. They’re simple, well designed and don’t get unspeakably gunged up because there’s no holes to harbour mould. These organic muslin swaddles from www.adenandanais.com will keep baby contented and can be used for everything from mopping up messes, acting as a screen for feeding time, or making a rug for an impromptu picnic or doll’s tea party.

This wooden carpenter’s kit is really well made and finished. The case comes with hammer, saw, spanner and lots of tools and accessories. Start them early on acquiring DIY skills. From www.educationaltoys.co.uk, who have tons of traditional learning toys for little ones. Lastly, how about a train to play with? This blue beauty comes with ten passengers and crew and is tremendous fun. Perfectly sized chunky and colourful pieces are great for pre-schoolers. It’s over half a metre long and is available from www.traidcraftshop.co.uk. It may seem expensive, but it has been handcrafted by skilled artisans in Sri Lanka and will be treasured for generations to come.

THE LAST WORD |

WORDS BY PETER MITCHELL

The Archie Foundation fundraising manager and keen climber, Claire Bush, is aiming to hit the heights in the festive season with the charity’s major fundraiser of the year. 'It’s called Beards for Bairns and we are running it for the fifth time,' she told me at her congested office-cum-storeroom just inside the entrance to Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital (RACH).

Trees. We hang tags on to a Christmas tree which ask for a monetary donation and explain what that donation could be used for. This year, we are going to have a big drive to get more businesses to take a tree.'

Now a registered trademark, the idea for Beards for Bairns was dreamed up by Archie chief executive David Cunningham. 'We invite men to be sponsored for growing a beard, starting on Christmas Day,' said Claire. 'It has become our largest fundraising event with proceeds rising from £10,000 in the first year to a staggering £170,000 in our fourth effort last year. Several players at Aberdeen Football Club have supported us in the last couple of years and that support has been renewed for the next big effort. It would be wonderful to hit our target of £200,000.'

High 10 for Archie was launched to fund 10 projects to give the hospital an extra special excellence.

Christmas is one of the busiest times of the year for Claire, her colleagues and the Archie army of volunteers. 'We attend several craft fairs and sell our charity Christmas cards which are always very popular,' she added. 'We also ask establishments such as garden centres and supermarkets to take one of our Giving

More than 1 million children and their families have passed through the portals of RACH since it opened in January 2004, and last year to mark its 10th anniversary,

For example, feedback from the young long-term patients was that what they missed most was access to fresh air. Archie will support the creation of new outdoor spaces in the vicinity of the front entrance and also the remodelling of an existing play area behind the hospital and making it more easily accessible. Claire, who was a community life champion at Asda, Bridge of Dee, before joining Archie in April, 2013, is no deskbound figure. With her head for heights, she was a shoe-in for a highly successful sponsored abseil at the hospital in July which raised £25,000.
