FROM THE EDITOR

Hello again,

Looking back, it’s unlikely that 2022 will be going down in the history books as the Best Year Ever as far as most of us are concerned, so we thought we’d go full-on festive for this issue.

Sometimes, you just need to put the world’s miseries aside and squeeze into your favourite party frock, open a bottle of something fizzy and take the time to appreciate those around you. Simple gestures like finding a meaningful gift for a friend who’s struggling a bit, popping an extra package or two into a foodbank collection point, or donating to a local toy appeal take on extra meaning at a time when things are difficult for so many of us right now. If you can make someone else’s day a little bit better, then grab every opportunity to do so.

This year, the mood isn’t one of credit-card carnage and conspicuous consumption, but rather a time of thoughtfulness and careful curation. Nobody needs a huge pile of gifts that contains nothing they actually like. Set a budget and take the time to seek out the perfect gift for everyone on your list, focus on local suppliers and little luxuries that make people feel good.

Luckily, we’ve done a lot of the legwork for you, whether it’s suggesting places to take a winter stroll, sorting out the best décor and party dresses, or where to buy some great gifts.

We wish you all the merriest of Christmases and hope that 2023 is a much better year for everyone wherever they find themselves in the world.

Perfect party looks

‘For me less is more, investing in your skin and having that natural effortless finish is the goal for this year's party season.

‘You can go all out with your outfit, sequins, glitter and embellishments, but what can complete your look is a statement lip. Choosing the right lip colour to match with your outfit might seem hard work, especially when there are so many colours and finishes to choose from, but I always feel matching a red or deep plum lipstick with your look works well.”

‘If you want a more dramatic look, two-tone lipstick adds a touch of sophistication. It’s also is one of the simplest makeup trends to achieve. Choose two matching lip colours and apply the darker one as the base on the outermost edge of your lips. Apply the lighter colour on the inside part and you’re done. You’ll find some great tutorials online.

‘Skincare is important, look for products that help create a dewy, natural glow. Applying makeup on dry skin is one of the biggest makeup mistakes. It can make the face look dull, cracked and tired. Everything

good is built on a solid foundation, and in this case, a properly moisturised face. So, ensure that your face is properly hydrated before you apply makeup.

‘Shimmery eyeshadows are very attractive, but when you use them over the entire eyelid, can look a bit over the top. Use shimmery eyeshadow only on the inner eye area, and a matte shadow for the rest. Ideally, use nude eyeshadows or eyeshadows that are a couple of shades darker than your skin tone.

‘Make sure you apply your bronzer only on your cheekbones, the top of your forehead, and the jawline. If you are doing it right, you will notice that you are actually drawing the number 3 on both the sides of your face.

‘Glossy eyeshadow is another huge trend in the beauty world. Like many dramatic make up looks, glossy eyeshadow was created on models then transitioned to a mainstream look. This eccentric eye look is super easy to achieve at home. You can simply use pigmented lip gloss or apply your eyeshadow then top it off with a gloss to achieve the same look.’

The city and shire abound with amazingly scenic places to go for a walk and get some fresh air. Don your most sensible shoes, wrap up warmly and head out on our pick of the best routes whether you fancy some sea breezes, a hill walk, a scenic stroll or just a short wander towards somewhere warm that offers great cake and coffee…

Heritage Hikes

Haddo Country Park

The estate grounds at Haddo are a great way to spend a couple of hours wandering along the paths through the woods and by the ponds. It’s a good choice for families because there’s a playpark and picnic areas, as well as a gallery. There are a couple of tea rooms on site, but opening hours vary. Visithaddo.com has the details.

Dunnottar Castle

This is a 5km walk that includes fairly steep sections. Start with a stroll along the beach boardwalk to the harbour, then head uphill to the war memorial and onwards to the spectacular ruins of Dunnottar Castle. If you want to see round the castle, you can book tickets at dunnottarcastle.co.uk. If the hike has made you hungry, try The Bay for fish and chips or pop into Molly’s for cake and coffee.

Craigievar Castle

If it’s been snowing, then Craigievar Castle is utterly magical. The castle itself is closed from the end of September to the start of April, but the grounds are worth visiting and are open from dawn to dusk each day. If you’re lucky, you might spot roe deer, a pine marten or even a rare Scottish wildcat as you walk the 45 minute woodland trail.

Dunnotar Castle

Waterside wanders

Aberdeen Beach

The beach offers about six miles of walking. The sands are often deserted in winter, particularly if the weather is a bit bracing. Footdee is always worth exploring and the harbour can provide an interesting diversion as the ships manoeuvre. The esplanade is perfect for buggies and wheelchairs as well as those who prefer to walk on the flat. Better yet, there’s a choice of cafés and entertainment options ready to welcome you at the end of your walk.

Pitfour Lake

Mintlaw’s Pitfour Lake is a great family walk as it’s not too long and it’s a circular route meaning there’s always something new to see. You can often see wildfowl or solitary fishermen and this is a surprisingly quiet and still place, perfect for inner contemplation too. The walk itself is just a couple of miles, but if you’d prefer a bit more exercise, you can head to nearby Aden Park.

Loch Muick

The Loch Muick circuit comes in at 12.5km and takes up to four hours, so it’s not one to take on in your favourite Jimmy Choos. There are spectacular hill views and insta-worthy small beaches, bridges and the opportunity to spot birds of prey, deer and other wildlife.

Hills

Bennachie

Bennachie offers several peaks and some challenging routes. The walk is mainly uphill and there are one or two places that involve a bit of a scramble over rocky ground. The routes are well marked and start at the Visitors’ Centre. The Mither Tap trail will take you to the remains of an Iron Age fort and some great views. Head into Inverurie for sustenance afterwards.

Scolty Hill

Banchory’s Scolty Hill is less of a trek than Bennachie and easier to manage with small children or older relatives. There are a variety of marked routes through the woodlands, or you can just keep heading upwards towards the monument at the top, which offers the chance to have a breather and admire the views over Deeside.

Martina explained, ‘The most effective treatment isn’t always the most expensive or invasive option. For example, DermaPen is a micro-needling treatment that stimulates collagen and elastin production. One of the joys of the festive season is a visit to a Christmas market. Whether you go abroad or stick nearer to home, it always feels like being in a Richard Curtis film with some hot chocolate or a local delicacy in hand and expecting Hugh Grant to pop up in a flurry of snowflakes at any moment.

Here’s our pick of the best Christmas markets if you fancy a trip…

ABERDEEN

Let’s start with Aberdeen’s Christmas Village on Broad Street. It’s open from November 17th through to December 31st and features a selection of funfair rides, an outdoor skating rink and street food vendors. Head into the quad at Marischal College and you’ll find Curated at the Quad, which features lots of local makers and craftspeople with a changing line up each weekend. Last year the market raised over £15,000 for Charlie House, the local charity that improves the quality of life for babies, children and young people who have life-limiting or life-threatening conditions.

EDINBURGH

Edinburgh may be better known for its Hogmanay celebrations, but the capital also does Christmas in a big way. Head to Multrees Walk for a luxury shopping experience against the backdrop of trees sparkling with thousands of fairy lights.

This year sees a new operator taking over the city’s market, which will open from November 19th to January 3rd. They’re promising an artisan market in Castle Street and further activities at Parliament Square in the Old Town. West Princes Street Gardens will be host to Santa Land, featuring carnival rides, games and entertainment, with market stalls selling festive food and drinks and arts and crafts over in the eastern section of the gardens.

COLOGNE

The Germans originated Christmas markets back in the medieval period and there are few towns that don’t feature a festive market. Given its Old Town, Roman ruins, cathedral, shopping and restaurants, Cologne is a great choice for a city break at any time of the year, but the city is also regarded as having one of Germany’s best selection of Christmas Markets. This year, they run from November 21 to December 23. The Old Town has the Market of Heinzel, or you could head for the Market of Angels on the Neumarkt. There are markets at the harbour and in many of the outlying neighbourhoods too. The market on Rudolfplatz features half-timbered houses, a life-sized Nativity scene and lots of sticky, sweet treats like candy floss. The Stadgarten market is less touristy and features around 80 local artisans and makers. There are also charity markets and a gay Christmas Market at Heavenue, which has a great entertainment programme and over the top decorations.

COPENHAGEN

As you might expect from the culture that gave us Hans Christian Andersen, Copenhagen’s Christmas markets have a fairy-tale quality. The Tivoli Gardens’ Market is one of very few that charges an entry fee, but it’s worth it for the magical atmosphere. Tivoli combines a fun fair with thousands of lights strung from the trees and music from the Tivoli Youth Guard. It could even get the Grinch in a good mood. It’s a very child-friendly place, with lots of stalls and treats like cinnamon popcorn, heart-shaped honey cakes, warm doughnuts and cocoa or mulled wine. There are almost 70 places to eat and drink at Tivoli, the more ruinously expensive of which need to be booked well in advance. It’s open late in to the evenings, from November 18th to the end of the year.

If you tire of Tivoli, you can browse through stalls along the Nyhavn waterfront or visit the markets in several of the city’s squares. Try the market at Freetown, Christiania for a less traditional approach.

© VisitScotland/Kenny Lamb

Unless your nearest and dearest publish spreadsheets listing everything they’d like to find in their Christmas stocking and your kids write overly optimistic 300 page letters to Santa, you may need a little help finding the perfect gift for everyone on your list. Naturally, we’re here to help with our festive alphabet of gift inspirations…

A is for Alcohol

Alcohol is a welcome present, especially if it’s locally produced and relatively artisan. Avoid anything too niche or that’s only suitable for the festive season, no-one wants a Gingerbread Latte liqueur in April. Consider a selection of beers from local craft brewers, a Speyside Malt, or indulge in one of the many gins from Aberdeenshire producers. Try House of Elrick. Their artisan gins

are limited to 600 bottles per run and the bottles are beautiful. They also offer a range of rums.

Cocktail masterclasses can make a great gift. Try Orchid on Bon Accord Square. They also offer a monthly cocktail subscription service for £25, which gets four cocktails delivered. They also deliver large bottle of sharing cocktails, such as

their Pornstar Martini and Porter’s Gin made in their own micro-distillery.

If prefer wine, head for SugarBird Wines on Union Grove, where you’ll find an amazing selection including some great discoveries from South Africa. They offer free delivery in Aberdeen too.

B is for Beauty

Now that everything’s spiraling in price, people tend to focus on the essentials, making beauty gifts feel like a luxury treat. Treatment packages or gift vouchers are often a good way to go as the recipient can then choose treatments to suit. The Lounge at Chapelton offers some superb Elemis facials and massage treatments as well as having a great reputation for colour and cuts. Up in Inverallochy, Treat Company has some excellent multi-treatment packages for mothers-to-be, as well as medical grade facials, 3D Lipo, laser skin blemish reduction and so much more.

F L A TL A

With over 350 5-star reviews, King Street’s Bello Beauty is a great choice if you want a beauty gift from a central salon. Their two-hour Just Let Go package comes in at £85 and includes a full body revitalising scrub and multi-modal massage.

How about a trip to one of the city’s top salons? Salon 70 is brilliant for creative colour, flattering cuts and styles for special occasions. Bloom Lifestyle is a great choice for the gift of a new style and some beauty treatments for someone special.

C is for Confectionary & chocolate

If you want to keep it local, Loch Aurora do scrumptious home-made fudges and tablet as well as enticing pamper hampers. They’re a great choice for corporate gifting and can even create bespoke flavours to make your gift stand out.

Cocoa Ooze produce luxury chocolate truffles that taste great and have beautiful packaging. One of their truffle making kits or workshops would make the sweetest gift, or spoil someone in the run up to Christmas with their advent calendar.

Rosemary Planet on Great Western Road is excellent for vegan sweets and there are also some amazing traditional confectioners like Giulianotti in Stonehaven, Humbug on Rosemount and Ellon’s Hey Sweetie!

D is for Dogs

Almost 90% of pet owners buy their pet a Christmas present, with the average spend being around £18. That’s a lot of money to spend on a soft toy that will be disembowelled in five minutes flat! Instead, head to Country Ways, where you’ll find a great selection of quality dog toys,

jacket, bowls and leads. They also have a vast range of kit for horses. Also on Holburn Street, Decidedly Dogs has everything for even the most pampered of pooches. Perhaps a new winter coat or a toy from Planet Dog or Fluff & Tuff?

Scotland's only custom-built float room (aka Sensory Deprevation room), allowing your body and mind to destress in a weightless environment.

Floating can benefit a variety of conditions including: arthritis, sleep apnoea or insomnia, MS, fibromyalgia, injury recovery, bone-related or skin conditions, physical tension. It’s great for mindfulness practice, increasing endorphins and soothing pain, decreases cortisol stress hormone levels and heightens the senses.

E is for Events & experiences

Sometimes, experiences make better gifts, because the memories of a special day last a lifetime. Consider tickets to see a favourite band, or a show at the theatre. Check aberdeenperformingarts.com or pandjlive.com to see what’s coming up next year. Sports packages are another option. Match day hospitality packages, tickets to a rugby international or a round of golf at Trump International can all offer a special day out and a lifetime of memories.

If you’re looking for a gift for the all-action type, then have a look at Lochter Activity Centre, which offers everything from archery to off-roading. HuskyHaven near Stonehaven offer the chance to work with a team of sled dogs on their trails or you could opt for giving some belly rubs on a kennel tour instead.

F is for Foodie families

A meal out can be a great gift for the whole family and it’s a great zero-effort last minute gift too. Da Vinci Restaurant offers some amazing Italian and Tuscan specialities and also has an impressive vegan menu. Check out the menu and order a gift voucher online. The Esslemont on Union Street is a superb choice for a foodie family gift, combining an interesting cocktail menu with innovative tapas and dad-sized family favourites. Fish lovers would appreciate an outing to Silver Darling at the harbour, which has the reputation for the best seafood in the North East. If your tastes run to the more relaxed when it comes to a family feast, then No.10 on Queen’s Terrace offers tradition with a twist, with dishes that use the best local seasonal produce. They’re good for veggie, vegan and gluten-free options too. All three offer gift vouchers.

G is for Grannies & Grandpas

Joli Gifts on Queen’s Road has some great throws that are idea for snuggling up on sofas, as well as beautiful candle holders, plant pots, woolly hats and scarves and photo frames that would all make cosy gifts for grandparents. Grandpas might appreciate one of Joli’s hipflasks from Lund, particularly if you add a bottle of something to fill it.

The Owl at Number Two on Mid Stocket Road is one of those charming little shops filled with delightful gifts that you won’t find elsewhere. It’s particularly good on local and Scottish makers, so it’s great for people who are difficult to buy for or if you’re looking for stocking fillers.

H is for Hampers

I is for Self-gifting

Sometimes, the best way is simply to go with self-gifting. An investment in your future self, if you like. Self-gifting ideas might include signing up for a course, improving your smile at The Orthodontic Clinic or Abercrombie Dental, restoring your glow with treatments from Inverurie’s Clinetix, or NY Skin Clinic in Aberdeen. If you really want a whole new you, then Alpha Clinic’s range of surgical and non-surgical procedures may be the ultimate in Christmas self-gifting.

J is for Jewellery

X is for X-rated

If you really want to spoil your other half, how about a weekend away? Better yet, how about a luxurious weekend away that doesn’t involve all the hassle of endlessly delayed flights or relying on trains - there’s very little romance in a replacement bus service. Instead, consider The Marcliffe Hotel and Spa. Great food, amazing beds, 24 hour room service and a host of pampering treatments available in the spa. You can even order sticky toffee pudding for breakfast in bed.

If you’d rather be romantic in town, then give Malmaison a go. They often have special

packages that combine dinner and a stay and the rooms are darkly decadent with huge beds and baths.

If you fancy something truly romantic, but a bit further afield, opt for Fingal, Edinburgh’s luxury yacht which is moored right next to Britannia. After a little shipboard passion, maybe squeeze in a trip to do a little shopping at Multrees Walk, where you’ll find Scotland’s best selection of luxury retailers including Harvey Nichols and Louis Vuitton.

Y is for Young adults& teenagers

You know you’re almost certain to buy the wrong thing, so set a realistic budget - no ponies or iPhone 14s - and ask carefully about brands, or opt for cash or vouchers. Remember to buy some small things to wrap up too.

If you have a fashion-lover to buy for, then it’d be difficult to go wrong with a visit to LoLo + Co on Netherkirkgate. Mother and daughter team Lauren and Rose have the gift of choosing pieces that work for women of all ages.

TheSweetestGifts

Yummy artisanal fudges, Belgian Chocolate fudges, gourmet marshmallows, traditional tablet, gift hampers & marshmallow toasting or dipping kits make the most delicious gifts.

I combine my daytime business as a singing teacher with performing at special events. Treble R Vocal Tuition has been going for ten years now. I teach all sorts of styles and age groups. I adore my job.

I caught the amateur musical theatre bug as a teenager and I’m currently a member of The Lyric Musical Society and Co-Musical Director for Inverurie Panto and for next year’s Aberdeen Student Show.

My dream job would be performing with the Strictly Come Dancing live band, but there’s no gig too weird and wonderful for me. I’ve performed at weddings, charity events and even for someone moving into their new home. The more unique the better! I love special requests and songs that get everyone on the dancefloor!

Learning my craft and honing my skills on the job over many years have been key to delivering a bespoke, experienced service. One of my favourite events is Taste of Grampian because I have a long association with it, and it’s opened up lots of opportunities.

I get my biggest buzz from watching people having a good time and there’s a huge satisfaction in helping raise lots of money for charity, although there are

lots of corporate events, sports dinners, quiz nights and themed nights as well. It’s important to bring a unique style, delivery, energy and professionalism to every event - it’s crucial that the MC works closely with event organisers to keep things running smoothly and on time, and there’s a huge amount of hard work that goes into delivering a bespoke service.

A recipe for Christmasmagical co-parenting

Kirsten Knight and Lynne Mulcahy who head up the Family Law Team in Aberdeen at Balfour + Manson, share their tips for ensuring the whole family has a happy Christmas…

At Balfour + Manson, we realise that Christmas can be particularly stressful for those coparenting due to separation or divorce.

Kirsten Knight explained, ‘There’s no ‘one size fits all’ rule for every family. Both sides may need to compromise so that the children are able to enjoy Christmas with the entire family.

‘The key thing is communication. Children should feel that their parents have worked together to make their Christmas happy and stress free. Negotiate plans as early as possible and be open. You might want to involve older, more mature children in these discussions, but they should never feel pressure to pick one parent over the other. If you are able to agree plans, put them in writing, even an email, just to check that understanding and avoid any hitches later.

Lynne Mulcahy added, ‘Be flexible. A bit of give and take means the children are able to relax and enjoy Christmas so much more. It might be small things like scattering reindeer food outside Dad’s house as well as Mum’s or changing the timing of a meal. Often separated families find arrangements that alternate year about work well.

‘Be child centred; putting the children’s needs centre stage provides common ground and reminds everyone of what is most important. Asking the question ‘How will that feel to the children?’ is vital.

‘Having said all of this, the team at Balfour + Manson understand that reaching an agreement is not always going to be possible, so we can help co-parents come to a solution that works for both them and the children.’

Garden designer Kirsty McLean plans ahead with foliage, flower and berry suggestions for natural festive décor…

EXPENSIVE DECORATIONS,

pollinators and ivy makes a wonderful nesting site for birds in spring.

Use cut willow or long flexible branches to form the base for wreaths, or find a log or fallen branch to use as a table decoration, Try spraying it with fake snow and attaching mosses, foliage and berries.

You can make impressive garlands and wreaths by creating a base with rope or string and attaching conifer branches like pine, spruce or fir before adding in some more colourful choices, like holly berries and solar or battery powered fairy lights.

Growing holly in the garden is easy, although some of the plant names are deceptive. If you want berries you’ll need a male variety such as Ilex aquifolium ‘Golden Queen’ and a female holly, such as Ilex x altaclerensis ‘Golden King’.

Other great choices for festive foliage include the corkscrew branches of Twisted Hazel (Corylus Contorta) and the blue-green foliage of Eucalyptus, which should last around 3 weeks when cut fresh. You can also dry Eucalyptus or spray it with gold or silver. Eucalyptus gunnii will grow in most situations here, but needs to be kept well-pruned as it is very vigorous. The evergreen Cotoneaster Lacteus will probably have lost its berries by Christmas, but the leaves and stems work well in decorations. This shrub can grow to around 4m high over 20 years, producing milky white flowers in summer followed by a profusion of tiny red berries.

Winter heathers are another option. Try Erica x darleyensis. The longer stems are easier to work into wreaths. Ivy is also a great garden plant for decorations at this time of year. Many varieties flower late providing an invaluable food source for insect

When it comes to colour, hydrangeas are easily air-dried and retain their natural pink/blue or white hues. They are best grown in dappled shade or full sun in a reasonably sheltered spot. Requires moist but well-drained soil.

Skimmias are a good choice for evergreen foliage and winter berries. Skimmia japonica Nymans (female) offers long-lasting red berries when planted in proximity to a male plant such as Skimmia japonica ‘Kew Green’ or Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’. Or try Skimmia japonica ‘Pabella’ which has a profusion of berries. For white berries try Skimmia japonica ‘Kew White. This is a female plant, so again, you’ll need the male, ‘Kew Green’, ‘Rubella’ or ‘Fragrans’ to produce berries. Skimmia japonica ‘Rubella’ (male) has wonderful deep burgundy blooms through winter.

Viburnum Tinus has evergreen foliage very similar to that of the Bay tree and hosts clusters of creamy-white fragrant blooms, that flower all through winter - perfect for adding into arrangements.

If you have a shady spot in the garden, check for mosses. Mats of moss make great bases for table decorations and wreaths. Provided they are kept moist, they should last throughout the season.

Bring some seasonal scent into the house with springs of rosemary, sage, lavender and thyme. All are wonderful for packing and creating scent and texture in decorations. Grow in full sun in well-drained soil, they don’t like cold, wet conditions preferring shelter, here in the north. These are all drought tolerant plants.

SOCIETY FOCUS Abernecessities Ball

WHO: Trend Magazine Fashion Lunch

Abernecessities celebrated its third birthday in style at Union Kirk, by raising £50k to help support children and families across Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. The charity has supported over 8000 babies and children since 2019. The organisers would like to thank Stork, a Fluor company, who were the ball’s headline sponsors.

WHAT:

Trend held it’s hugely popular second fashion lunch of the year at Malmaison Aberdeen and this time were delighted to support new Aberdeen charity, Abernecessities. Guests heard all about the charity from Dani Fletcher-Herd and were entertained by MC Jeff Burns from Fifth Dimension who also provided close up magic for the guests. Fashions were supplied from @hamishmunro, Tiger Lily Boutique, Country Ways and Perfect Bridal Rooms.

Angela Buchan of Chapel Street's No.18 Gifts & Cards

‘After graduating in Design at Gray’s School of Art, I began working at Nova, Aberdeen’s legendary shop offering everything from kitchenware to cards, toiletries, games and gifts. I hadn’t been with them long when I was offered the role of buyer. I loved travelling all over the UK and abroad to trade shows. I adored designing the Christmas windows!

‘After 17 years, I was told Nova would be closing and I was to be made redundant. I decided to open my own shop. Within a month of Nova closing, I reopened the card shop area as No.18. I redesigned the interior on a tight budget and used my redundancy payment to buy stock for my own shop. Nova’s management team helped and supported me whilst getting set up. I was determined to open in August as I didn’t want to miss out on the best trading period in the lead up to Christmas.

‘When I’m not working, I love travelling and shopping! Wherever I go, I am looking at ideas for my shop, products, the way things are displayed and I’m forever looking at shop windows. It’s a bit of an obsession! My daughter is at an age where she’s picking out designs and influencing some of what I’m buying. I also love interiors. My home is a haven of comfort where I relax and entertain friends. I love celebrating any occasion and I go overboard with decorating for Birthdays, Halloween and Christmas! It gives me immense pleasure watching my daughter and her friends delight in my creations.

‘As an avid shopper, having my own shop is a dream come true. I love designing displays and buying stock! The window displays are the best way to advertise what I sell. I’m lucky that we have great, experienced and wonderful staff. They’re always smiling and happy to help.

‘At No. 18, we move with the trends and always have some amazing products in store. My passion is for design and fashion so we have a fantastic selection of fashion accessories for Christmas gifting - scarves, hats, gloves, jewellery, bags and ponchos. Hot water bottles and cosy slippers to stave off the cold. We have new ranges of candles and framed prints as well as gorgeous tea towels, chopping boards and mugs. Baby gifts including Jellycat, wedding gifts, LSA glassware and a vast card collection. The stock is ever-changing and always a bit different from other stores.

‘Like every small, independent, business, this is a really challenging time for us. First the pandemic, then a reduction in footfall because people are still working from home. I’ve focussed on finding some really great gifts with great prices this season. We recognise that people are struggling with the rising cost of living and business costs are also spiralling. That’s why we have some beautiful, but practical gifts like scarves, slippers and hot water bottles. Thoughtful gifts needn’t cost a fortune and local companies often have the best bargains.

‘My favourite part of my work is receiving deliveries and getting them unpacked and merchandised beautifully in my shop. After five years in business, it still makes me so happy when customers comment on how lovely the shop and stock is and when they come back time and time again.

‘I’m so lucky that I have such a fabulous team and great customers.’
