FROM THE EDITOR

Hello again,

Everyone at Trend tends to think of May as the start of summer, which in our ever-optimistic minds, stretches out from now till mid-October in an endless haze of floaty dresses, convertibles, warm days, chilled champagne and lots of time with family, friends and loved ones.

Of course, there’s just the slightest smidge of a possibility that the Scottish weather won’t co-operate with our plans. It’s not unknown for us to get a sudden hailstorm or snow in June, so this issue is packed with ideas of places to go and things to do just in case we don’t get a perfect summer. You’ll find ideas for a quick city break, making the most of a small garden and outdoor play toys, tech that will actually improve your life, ideas on where to eat out and a feast of colourful fashion too.

Come rain or come shine, we’re lucky to live in such a superb area, from the wilderness of the Cairngorms, to our sandy beaches, forest walks, castles and picturesque villages, local independent shops and restaurants. Let’s all try to make the most of it this May and June.

Love Everyone at Trend x

Gorge walking is a better option for beginners and families. It involves walking along a river, but it’s got to be the right river. We’re not talking about a relaxing stroll along the shady banks of the Ythan Estuary here. Gorge walking is much more exhilarating, combining lots of climbing rocks, splashing in plunge pools, slipping and sliding your way down stream or struggling your way upstream.

IF YOU’RE FEELING ADVENTUROUS AND DON’T MIND A FEW BRUISES, GIVE CANYONING OR GORGE WALKING A GO…

It’s a family friendly activity, but best for kids over eight, who don’t mind getting wet and messy. It’s best to book an organised trip with qualified guides who know the river rather than just plunging in with no idea of the currents or terrain.

Canyoning is a higher octane version of gorge walking, suitable for reasonably fit adults and teenagers. Think of it as white water rafting, without the raft. You’ll find yourself scrambling up scree slopes, climbing rock faces, abseiling and crossing rope bridges, plunging behind waterfalls, leaping from ledges, wild swimming and generally feeling like a superhero that’s forgotten their cape. We can’t guarantee the superhero feeling will still be with you the next morning, though!

Adventure Aberdeen and ACEAdventures in Forres all offer canyoning and gorge walking adventures in Aberdeenshire and Moray and there are lots of options in the Cairngorms and Highland Perthshire too.

It’s time to cast off some of the 17 layers we’ve been swaddling ourselves in since last September and show some skin. Winter can leave skin dull and dry, so give it a boost with our pick of products and treatments designed to get you summer ready and glowing with vitality…

© Aila Images 10 | BEAUTY

Start with a quality SPF like mesoestetic’s Moisturising Sun Protection SPF50+ sun cream. It offers added hydration and a silky texture that creates a soft and nourished base. It’s great for dry or mature skins. You can buy it at facethefuture.co.uk for around £60. Even if your regular foundation or tinted moisturiser includes SPF, it’s worth boosting your protection levels with an additional sun cream.

If you want to get a healthy summer glow, head for the Sun Spot on Broomhill Road, where you’ll find a selection of the latest tanning beds. Alternatively, Green People have their new Age Defy+ Liquid Gold Tanning drops, which offer a temporary at-home radiance boost and subtle colour for up to a week. They’re 95% organic, vegan and cruelty-free. £36 for 30ml from greenpeople.co.uk.

If you’re tanning, then a decent exfoliator is a must. Give FRUU Cosmetics’ Coconut Coffee Scrub a go. It’s gently effective, smells great and, like all FRUU products, it’s vegan, crueltyfree and made from wonky fruits. Find it at fruuurskin.com for £12.99.

If winter has left your skin prone to breakouts or acne, then beauty tech specialist PMD’s new PMD Clean Acne could be a worthwhile investment. It combines a rechargeable silicon cleansing brush on one side with the power of blue light therapy on the other. The cleansing brush operates at 7,000 vibrations per minute at a perfect frequency to break down dirt and oil from within the pores whilstlifting and toning the skin. You’ll find it at harrods.com or uk.pmdbeaty.com with an RRP of £209.

Treat Company in Inverallochy offer a full range of Diode SHR Super Hair removal treatments, Lycon waxing and Mabel Plus Tri-polar treatments which use subcutaneous heat to lift and contour the skin and shrink fat cells which firms the jawline for those holiday photos.

Aesthetic Beauty Inverurie now offers EXO-SKIN™, a concentrated rejuvenating serum with growth factors from stem cells, peptides, soothing cytokines, hydrating hyaluronic acid, collagenstimulating vitamin C and other potent substances that support skin health. Combined with DermaPen micro-needling, it basically rewrites your skin’s past and lies about your age for you. Great if you want to look younger and boost your self-confidence for summer.

See things differently

Optometrist Nicola Smiles is now welcoming patients to her state of the art new practice in Stonehaven’s Cameron Street, just a couple of minutes’ walk from the Market Square Car Park.

Nicola explained, ‘I’m both a dispensing optician and an optometrist, with a wealth of knowledge and experience which has allowed me to create a practice that combines a professional, friendly and pleasant service with superior quality equipment and fabulous high quality frames and spectacle lenses

‘My new boutique practice is in an old bank building at 28 Cameron Street. I’ve sourced spectacle frames and sunglasses from all over the world. Many are handmade from sustainable sources. There is a style for all tastes and every face, with an emphasis on being a bit different.

‘I stock Odette Lunetttes, Mykita, Danielle Rattray, Tree eyewear, Armani and Prada among others. The emphasis is on quality and current styles. I also collaborate with a local eyewear designer Danielle Rattray with the frames being hand made in France.

‘Customers should never be rushed when choosing frames. You can browse through our antique cabinets, rather than face an overwhelming wall of almost identical frames. I help with frame selection. It’s important to consider individual style, face shape, skin tone and hair style as well as personality and lifestyle.

‘I provide comprehensive eye examinations, funded by the NHS, using state of the art equipment with extended appointment times to give the best examination and service possible. I’m with the customer the whole way through their experience at Nicola Smiles Optometry – it’s a truly bespoke service. Outside prescriptions are welcome so you don’t have to wait until you are due an eye exam to choose new glasses.

Technology is supposed to improve our lives, but often it comes to dominate our existence or bamboozles us. TARRAGONA

Tarragona is a Spanish port city that’s around a twenty minute transfer from Reus airport, just along the coast from Barcelona. Direct flights are under three hours. It’s great for couples or a getaway with friends. You get beaches, warm weather, a medieval city to get lost in, some impressive Roman ruins and a vibrant late night food culture with excellent seafood.

The central food market is fascinating, though there may be restrictions about what you can bring home. History buffs will love the Roman Amphitheatre and aqueduct, though kids may be more enthusiastic with the nearby theme parks. PortAventura includes a newly opened water park and six themed worlds to explore, while Aquapolis includes a dolphin show. If you’d prefer something more off-beat, Sirenas Mediterranean Academy is the place to go if you want to spend an hour or two learning how to be a mermaid or a triton.

EXETER

Exeter’s a great choice for a UK city break, being far enough away to feel different, but small enough that you can easily cover the highlights in a couple of days. There’s 2000 years of history to explore, from the cathedral precincts to the underground tunnels. The university makes it a fairly cosmopolitan city, with lots of vintage and specialist shops.

Head out to Topsham, which feels a bit like Boden-on-Sea with its cute lifestyle and delis lining the way to the marina, lido and antiques centre.

Further afield, Devon has lots to offer from Boscombe Beach, Babbacombe Model Village, to Kent’s Cavern and a donkey sanctuary. You can even visit Buckfast Abbey where the monks produce a tonic wine beloved of thirsty Glaswegians.

AMSTERDAM

Amsterdam is perfect for art lovers. Every second building seems to be a museum or gallery, so there’s a lot to explore. Once you’ve had your fill of Van Gogh and Rembrandt, try The Wondr Experience, Micropia, BodyWorlds or Youseum.

If it’s serenity you’re seeking, take a wander along the canalsides, take in the aroma of the flower market, head for the woods at Amsterdam Bos, visit the butterfly house at the botanic gardens or take a hike through the city’s Vondelpark. Alternatively, pack a picnic and take the No. 2 tram out to Molen Van Sloten, a picturesque village with a working windmill.

Amsterdam boasts restaurants offering every imaginable international delicacy, which may be just as well since traditional Dutch dishes tend towards fatty meat and vegetable stews that have been boiled into mush. They’re good at chips, though.

When it comes to bargain shopping and souvenirs, try the Albert Cuypt Street Market or the monthly flea market at IJ-Hallen. Henri Willig Cheesemakers on Reguliersbreestraat specialise in organic cheeses from their own farms, which are always worth taking home.

The 9 Streets area offers an eclectic mix of design-led shops and Old Zuid is home to luxury boutiques. You’ll find Dior, Prada and Chanel at P.C. Hooftstraat. Of course, if you’re feeling rather flush, there’s always the diamond district!

Andy Booth-McCabe of The Esslemont

My dad was in the RAF so we travelled around and lived in different countries. Growing up, food was always new and exciting with lots of variety which gave me the passion for food. Naturally, that led to a love of cooking and then a career in kitchens. I’ve worked in all types of establishments from small family run places to large corporate outlets.

My wife Gilliann is a chef too, but we don’t work together. We have three kids, so life is always busy. Mealtimes are where we all stop and come together. So whether it’s in the garden having BBQs or trying new dishes with the kids helping out, it’s real family time. Like a lot of dads, I’m a huge BBQ fan, but not of cremated sausages that are still raw inside! I like to smoke my own meats and make my own marinades.

At the Esslemont, we like to try new things and aren’t scared to mix things up and test out new flavour combinations. For the menu, we usually try out some recipes and then we will do a full tasting with the managers and directors to see what works and what will be suitable for the menu. This a really important step for the menu as we want to be confident that not only the dish tastes delicious but we try out different presentation so it also looks pleasing on the plate.

‘The food here is focussed on fresh, local produce with a foundation of good home cooking.’

I love working at the Esslemont. I get to be creative and adventurous with new ingredients and flavours. Last year we launched a new selection of Scottish inspired tapas dishes which have proved to be very popular. Guests can either share a selection or simply just enjoy one as a starter followed by one of our hearty seasonal mains, like our Baked Monkfish. Fish is always really popular in the restaurant

The food here is focussed on fresh, local produce with a foundation of good home cooking. We aim to use as much local and Scottish ingredients as possible with everything freshly cooked on a daily basis.

The location of the Esslemont is a highlight, too – being located in the heart of the city centre on Union Street in aniconic building. It can be fast paced so it’s thrilling and challenging. The only downside is that there’s no sunshine in the kitchen, but then again Aberdeen can be four seasons in one day!

As well as the fabulous building that’s soaked in history and a great team both in the kitchen and front of house, I like the atmosphere. The feel of the place is homely. The food is family friendly with local produce at the heart and there is something on the menu for everyone.

Alongside our main menu, we have also recently launched a new monthly Saturday event called the Saturday Spritz Social which offers guests a selection of tapas dishes alongside hand crafted cocktails and live music from local acts which works perfectly in our stylish venue. The events are proving to be very popular with dates sold out already which is fantastic to see.

PART TWO

40 | ADVERTISEMENTS

The city and shire’s hospitality sector has not been having an easy time of it over the past few years. The pandemic and cost of living crisis isn’t doing them any favours – so we thought we would! Here’s part two of our guide to some of our favourite places to eat and what we love about them…

SOMETHING DIFFERENT

Union Street’s Six by Nico offers an ever-changing themed six course tasting menu that’s inspired by travels or literature. There’s always a veggie version too so no-one feels left out. Tango Turtle on Little Belmont Street brings an unpretentious taste of the Caribbean the city with dishes like Buss Up Shut Tacos and Callalou. Goulash has been tucked away in The Adelphi forever. You’ll find some unusual wines and a menu full of robust Hungarian dishes, including some for vegetarians. Multi-award winning Fresh Mex on Schoolhill are great when you need to fill up. Who else could fill a burrito with fries? We love the flexibility to add your own filling combos.

LATE NIGHTS & OCCASIONS

Sometimes you want to feel a little more sophisticated, so Orchid on Bon Accord Square and SugarBird Wines on Union Grove are both award-winning options for drinks and little nibbles. Orchid previously carried off the Best Cocktail Bar in Scotland Award, while SugarBird major on South African wines. If you want to show off your poshest frock, then The Marcliffe, Eat on The Green, Café Boheme and The Malmaison top our list of choices. All feature local produce, amazing service and chefs at the top of their game.

EARLY MORNINGS

Our breakfast favourites include the Breakfast Burrito at Parx Café on Rubislaw Terrace, Sweet Mumma’s Kitchen in the railway arches for a traditional fry up and Thyme Out on Great Western Road for their excellent scones.

VEGGIE & VEGAN

Thistle Street’s FoodStory offers a friendly atmosphere, interesting salads, plant based recipes and some excellent cinnamon buns. Café Harmony on Bon Accord Terrace is a great choice for Mediterranean-inspired dishes for vegans, veggies, gluten-avoiders and carnivores alike.

COFFEE & CAKE

We’re rather spoiled when it comes to places for coffee and a wodge of something gooey that’s packed full of calories and carbs. In and around town, our favourites include Figment on Countesswells Road, Blether in Cults and Coppa on St. Swithin Street. Mains of Drum Garden Centre is a great choice if you want to combine your treat with a little shopping and picking up a perennial or two.

Further afield, Johnshaven’s Hidden Treasures, Goodbrand & Ross Tearoom in Strathdon, Highlanders Bakehouse in Crathie, Laurencekirk’s Gannets, The Arch Café in Fettercairn, Stonehaven’s The Villa and The Farm Shop at Finzean Estate outside Banchory are all worth the trip. Make a day of it with a trip to Annie’s Cakery at Platform in Macduff. They always have a great selection of tasty handmade treats.

SOMEWHERE NEWISH

The last few months have seen some interesting new additions to the North-east’s food scene. Cammies down in Cammachmore specialises in locally-caught sea food with a global twist. Dishes include Ceylon Monkfish and a Crispy Soft Shell Crab Burger. Graham Mitchell’s Tarragon on Rosemount Place makes the best of Aberdeenshire’s local meat and seafood, but vegetarians might need to order in advance.

Less formal new openings include the brilliant Resident X in Marischal Square, with a great selection of pop up street food specialists and some of the city’s most creative cocktails, Mount on Upperkirkgate which offers artisan coffee and some delightful sweet treats and Hatch 99 is a tiny coffee and cake takeaway on Back Wynd.

RESIDENT-X Great for groups

If you’re booking a venue for a group get together, then check out Resident-X.

Whether it’s a birthday, hen party, an office night out or a family celebration, Resident-X offers the perfect setting, right in the heart of the city. You’ll find four award-winning street food vendors and two of the city’s best bars all under one roof.

The stylish Oval Bar majors on classic cocktails, draft beers and big screens for live sports or corporate presentations. The stage in LAB X’s experimental mixology lounge is ideal for

performers, music, presentations or live podcasts. You can even book a mixology masterclass!

Resident-X makes organising hassle-free thanks to their prepaid food tokens, useable at every food vendor. No more boring buffets!

Whether your event is for 9 or 900, Resident-X is the best place to have a great time. To find out more, contact Resident-X’s events manager Hannah via bookings@resident-x.com

Pre & Post Nuptial Agreements:

Financial Implications of Marriage

Once you are married, the law provides that everything that you, or your spouse or civil partner, acquire (with some exceptions) in the course of the marriage is considered to be ‘matrimonial property’. Matrimonial property is to be shared fairly in the event of divorce, which usually means equally, but there are circumstances where unequal division can be justified. Marriage also brings with it obligations to financially support spouses (aliment) and certain automatic rights of inheritance in your spouse’s estate: to cash, property and house contents.

Why have a Pre or Post Nuptial Agreement?

You may not want the standard rules about inheritance, division of matrimonial property on divorce or aliment to apply. You may want to protect certain non-matrimonial assets (which you brought to the marriage, or were gifted to you, or inherited by you during the marriage) in the event that at some time in the future they change in nature to become matrimonial property. You may want your Will, alone, to govern what happens to your estate in the event of your death. You may have already decided “who” will get “what” in the event that you separate. You can be as general or specific as you wish in a Pre or Post Nuptial Agreement, as long as it is fair and reasonable at the time it is entered into.

When are Pre or Post Nuptial Agreements typically used?

• When there is unequal or significant wealth coming into a marriage.

• Where it is a second marriage for either or both of the individuals, particularly where there are children from previous relationships.

• Where you intend to restructure your business during the course of the marriage or have already done so.

• Where you intend to bring your spouse or future spouse into your business.

• Where you inherit or are gifted wealth either prior to, or during the course of a marriage.

• To protect certain assets, (e.g., a family business) for your children or extended family in the event of separation, divorce or death.

• Where you and your intended spouse or partner are already agreed who will get what in the event of divorce or death.

• Where you intend to gift family assets, as part of an inheritance tax planning exercise, to your children and there is a prospect that they will marry in due course, or they are already married.

What should I do if I want a Pre or Post Nuptial Agreement?

It’s important to seek legal advice from an experienced Family Lawyer as early as possible, especially if you have a wedding date planned. At Aberdein Considine, we appreciate that every family is unique, and we strive to provide an empathetic and effective service, tailored to meet your personal needs and circumstances. For a confidential chat, please contact the Aberdein Considine Family Law team on 0333 0044 333, ask@acandco.com, or visit acandco.com

While Pre and Post Nuptial agreements are often associated with the wealthy and famous, they are a practical form of financial planning which anyone who is getting married, entering into a civil partnership, or is already married, may wish to consider.

DESIGNING SMALL GARDEN SPACES CAN BE A CHALLENGING TASK, BUT WITH A LITTLE BIT OF CREATIVITY AND PLANNING, YOU CAN TURN YOUR GARDEN OR BALCONY INTO A BEAUTIFUL OUTDOOR OASIS THAT IS PERFECT FOR RELAXING, ENTERTAINING AND ENJOYING NATURE.

Here are some tips for designing small garden spaces:

Start with a plan: Before starting the design process, it's important to have a plan in place. Think about how you want to use your garden space, where the sun falls, privacy issues etc. Even in small spaces, zoning can optimise use and can also be used to create division toward better privacy and greater interest. Think about casual seating, dining, solo contemplation, play and utility. Division can be achieved in so many ways using containers or planting, wooden panels, trellis, slats, solid fence, or decorative metal panels.

Choose the right plants:

When designing a small garden space, it's important to future-proof your planting by choosing plants that are appropriate for the size of the

Garden
Kirsty McLean shares how to make the most of small spaces…

space. You need to understand what their height and spread will be at maturity. Look for plants that are compact and can be trained to grow vertically, such as climbing plants, dwarf trees, and compact shrubs. If in a sheltered spot, using plants with a jumbo leaf that look almost too big for the space, can create a luscious, vibrant feel, and make the space feel intimate and private.

Create different levels: To make the most of a small garden space, create different levels by using raised beds, containers, or retaining walls. The materials chosen can really pull a design together. Consider brick, block with stone veneer or wooden pressure-treated sleepers. This will not only add visual interest but also allow you to ‘layer’ your planting.

Use vertical space: Make the most of your small garden space by using vertical space. Hang plants from walls, add trellises or support wires for climbing plants, or use tall planters to add height to the garden.

Create a focal point:

A small garden space can benefit from a focal point, such as a water feature, sculpture, or a striking plant. This will draw the eye and create a sense of interest in the space.

Think about lighting:

Lighting can transform a small garden space at night. Add outdoor lighting to highlight focal points, pathways, and

seating areas. Solar-powered lights are a budget-friendly and eco-friendly option, but don’t expect too much out of these in the winter months.

Add seating:

A small garden space can be the perfect spot for relaxing and enjoying nature. Add seating in the form of a small patio, bench, or chairs to create a cosy and inviting atmosphere. Use retaining walls to double up as seating. Round tables in square spaces allow the maximum dining capacity and soften angular shapes.

Designing a small garden space can be a fun and rewarding project. By following these tips, you can create a beautiful and functional garden that is perfect for your lifestyle and needs.

Summer’s

Playhouses are brilliant for kids from three to ten, where imaginative play is to the forefront. Choose something with enough headroom and a larger footprint if possible, or upgrade to a summerhouse that can be taken over by the adults when the kids retreat to their bedrooms for a decade. If you have the skills, a DIY playhouse or a treehouse made from reclaimed wood can be a less expensive option.

Look for versatile play equipment that will be of use for several years as your children grow and can be passed on when your kids have grown out of it. There are lots of combination swing sets, by companies like Plum that can be added to over time. Start with a frame and swap out toddler swings for big kid versions, add seesaws, climbing nets and play towers as time goes on.

If you don’t have room for all year round outdoor play equipment, consider the inflatable option. Look for bouncy castles and water slides that are quick to set up when the sun comes out. Paddling and swimming pools are great for hot days and easy to pack away afterwards. If you have a larger garden, sportier options for active kids include trampolines, football goals and oldschool games like Swingball or Tetherball.

Messy play is always fun. Sandpits, water tables and mud kitchens offer endless fun for younger children, though it’s worth investing in a cover for your sandpit if there are cats around.

Outdoor play needn’t be expensive, sometimes a simple packet of pavement chalks, a climbable tree or exploring for insects and mini-beasts is all you need to keep the kids amused for a couple of hours.

Twenty first year Fashion and Textile students from Gray’s School of Art at Robert Gordon University have been working with a team from Braemar Castle, to create a unique sustainable fashion collection. The collection was unveiled during the Gray’s Fashion Show at Aberdeen Art Gallery on Friday 5 May.

The first years focussed on sustainable garments related to the castle’s rich heritage and history. The students deconstructed and reconstructed garments from RGU’s Kaim Co-operative, a second-hand shop run by RGU’s Go Green Society. All the creations had to be wearable and the material repurposed had to be made use of in the new garment.

Angus Lallah, a first-year student explained, ‘For my project, I set about repurposing a kid’s raincoat and a slip dress. I used materials from the jacket to create rigid structures, much like the ones seen in the castle. I combined them with drapes and pleats commonly found in Jacobite Dress. I wanted to work with pieces of clothing as they are rather than cut away and waste them. I was able to use all 59 pieces of my second-hand clothing to create my Braemar Castle Garment.’

Fashion and Textile student, Kimberley Duval, added, ‘The Braemar Castle Project is exciting and very challenging in the best possible way. I especially appreciated the zero-waste component, it made me appreciate my materials in a whole new way and I plan to incorporate that sustainability into my future work.’

The students’ designs will be on show in the castle when it reopens this summer. Find out more at braemarcastle.co.uk and rgu.ac.uk

MEET ROSEMARY MICHIE OF COUNTRY WAYS & MICHIES PHARMACIES

After I graduated, I worked for Shell in London, but I always knew that the family business or working for myself was my goal. I ran my own business for a few years, organising outdoor adventure and country sports activities and holidays. I think that’s where my passion for the countryside began to merge with work! Even now our weekends revolve around being out with the dogs, horses or doing a little fly-fishing.

The pharmacies were started by my grandfather, Charles Alexander Michie, in 1921. He had several branches in Aberdeen and was also an optician and photo processor. His sons, Charles and John, took over the business in their twenties and they and their wives Mary and Heather still take an interest in the business. They oversaw the move to our flagship Union Street store which houses a pharmacy, healthcare and beauty department, vaccination clinics, gift shop and a large cafe in the basement. Several of my cousins are involved in the business and we’re now in our fourth generation with younger family members also helping out.

There are seven pharmacies across the North-east, with about 120 staff. We stick to our founding principles of providing the very best healthcare for all our customers. We were the first pharmacy in the UK to offer flu vaccinations and offer ear health and podiatry too. Our pharmacists and healthcare team are hugely helpful and

do a remarkable job given the relentless pressures facing the NHS.

Country Ways started off as our pharmacy and farm sales store near the old mart in Kittybrewster, moving from agricultural to equine products and tack and to a larger store on Holburn Street after the mart closed. The Holburn Street site allowed us to expand into lifestyle and country clothing, footwear, gifts and much more.

our customers a unique shopping experience. We’re bringing in new brands like Holland Cooper, Sea Salt Cornwall and Hunt & Hall later this summer and we’ve upgraded our website to improve the online shopping experience. Our tech/online/social media team is likely to grow in the next year.

My own role is overseeing all aspects of running both Country Ways stores and the online offering. I love the creativity on the buying and marketing side which I also do for Michies. It’s such a great place to work, the team are fantastic and the customers so engaging, so it makes the whole thing a pleasure.

That’s not to say that running a business, particularly one in the city centre, is not without its challenges!
