Why mediate? A smarter way to resolve family disputes

Separation is rarely easy. Whether you’re navigating the end of a relationship or facing ongoing challenges around your children’s care, finding a way forward that feels constructive and amicable can make all the difference. That’s where family mediation comes in.

Mediation offers a supported, confidential space where you and your former partner can talk through issues calmly, with the guidance of a neutral professional. It’s designed to help you move out of conflict and towards solutions that work for everyone involved, especially your children. Rather than becoming stuck in repeating arguments, mediation encourages productive discussion, helping participants stay focused on the future instead of the past. This is particularly valuable where children are concerned, as ongoing conflict can easily spill over into family life.

Mediation is also a faster, more flexible option than going to court. There’s no fixed

timetable, sessions are arranged at times that suit you, and meetings can take place online if appropriate. This flexibility allows urgent matters to be addressed quickly and progress to happen at your pace.

Mediation is typically more affordable, too. With fewer formal steps and less legal correspondence, decisions can be reached more efficiently, keeping costs down.

Perhaps most importantly, mediation keeps you in control. You set the agenda, prioritise what matters most, and work through issues in a way that fits your family’s needs. This often leads to more creative, lasting agreements—and a stronger foundation for ongoing coparenting.

UNTALENT SHOW TALENT SHOW WITH A DIFFERENCE

The untalent show promises a night full of fun at Aberdeen Arts Centre come the 20th of June. As the name would suggest, expect a show with a difference. Prepare for mishaps and an evening of laughter, with all funds raised going towards the Save Aberdeen Arts Centre campaign. To find out more, go to aberdeenartscentre.com

There was a time when workplace wellbeing sat quietly on the sidelines, a perk, a policy, a tick box exercise. Not anymore.

Today, it’s a defining factor in business performance. Across the UK, poor mental health is costing employers up to £45 billion each year. Lost productivity, rising absence and disengaged teams are no longer hidden costs, they are front and centre. And yet, the opportunity is just as significant: for every £1 invested in employee wellbeing, businesses can see a return of up to £5.

The message is clear. Organisations that prioritise their people outperform those that don’t.

The most progressive organisations are already ahead of the curve. They understand that high performance is built on healthy, energised and engaged people. They are embedding wellbeing into their culture, not as an initiative, but as a way of working.

That's where ASV comes in

ASV will partner with local businesses to design wellbeing experiences that fit seamlessly into modern working life. The focus is not on short term fixes, but on creating lasting behavioural change, making it easier for employees to move more, feel better and perform at their best.

Crucially ASV also addresses the barriers that most often prevent engagement – lack of time, lack of confidence and work-related stress – offering flexible access before, during and after the working day to make wellbeing genuinely achievable.

Wellbeing days that create real impact

ASV’s corporate wellbeing days provide an opportunity for teams to step away from their typical day and re-energise. These can be taken as a full day or a half day offering a chance for a full reset or a morning to recharge.

Blending movement, education and recovery, the options are extensive. From yoga and reformer classes, to highenergy studio cycling, nutrition seminars to stress management workshops, every experience is designed with both individual and team benefit in mind. Team sports like badminton and pickleball bring an element of fun, connection and collaboration.

These days are not simply about fitness. They create space for employees to recharge and reconnect, and the benefits follow them back to the workplace in the form of improved focus, morale and resilience.

Sustained support through corporate membership

For a more sustained approach, corporate memberships provide ongoing access to ASV's full range of facilities, gym, racket sports, pools and classes, supporting employees to build habits that last.

Investing in wellbeing is investing in performance. Reduced absenteeism, higher engagement, improved retention and a stronger employer brand are all tangible outcomes. But beyond that, organisations are building something more valuable: a culture where people feel supported, energised and able to thrive.

Because when employees feel energised, supported and valued, they don't just show up – they perform. In a competitive market, that's not a soft benefit. It's a strategic advantage.

Reservations now open for relaunch at Aberdeenshire beauty spot

Scotland’s former national chef of the year has announced plans to open his first independent restaurant at an Aberdeenshire beauty spot this summer. Orry Shand, 36, is now breathing new life into the former Falls of Feugh restaurant, near Banchory, which closed its doors at the end of 2025. A major half a million-pound interior makeover of the venue is now underway, which will create an intimate destination restaurant with views towards the river and surrounding woodland. 10 local hospitality jobs are also being created as part of the development. Led by Orry and his team, a set multi course tasting menu comprising between 12 to 15 servings will blend Scottish ingredients with Nordic inspiration and classic French cooking techniques. “Being Aberdeenshire born and bred, it means so much to me, my family and team to be rooted in the region, celebrating its local produce and its distinctive character,” said Orry. Luxury wellness clinic launches in Aberdeenshire with leading professor at the helm

From regenerative medicine to redefining ageing, Professor Rhoda MacKenzie is passionate about ensuring people have the right tools to live and look well. Having recently launched a luxury wellness and medical aesthetics clinic in a stunning corner of Aberdeenshire, she’s helping hundreds of clients to improve their lives for the better. In Professor MacKenzie’s eyes, achieving longevity goes beyond basic tips to truly understanding your body. That’s why her clinic, aptly called Age Reversal Therapies, offers premium medical aesthetics services as well as expert consultations and diagnostic tests for informed and empowered treatment. Trend caught up with Professor MacKenzie during a rare moment of quiet and found out why the unique offering in Sauchen is just the beginning.

“I went to medical school in Aberdeen and trained as a surgeon and originally started my medical aesthetics service in 2005,” she said. “My client list steadily grew until I opened a larger clinic here in Sauchen. Now, from the moment you walk in to be greeted by our wonderful receptionist Amanda, you can expect the ultimate customer experience.”

Alongside aesthetics which include regenerative skin treatments, injectables for wrinkles and volume loss, laser treatments and microneedling, there is a huge focus on longevity and wellness.

Dr Aileen Alexander who is a GP, lifestyle physician and longevity specialist, is now partnering with the clinic to bring a more comprehensive, preventative approach to health and wellbeing. She focuses on identifying the early, often hidden drivers of ageing such as metabolic health, inflammation, stress, menopause and nutritional imbalances, long before disease develops, creating personalised, evidence-based plans.

“Longevity medicine is increasingly being recognised as a medical speciality,” Professor MacKenzie said. “The importance of prevention is key in our offering of bespoke, personalised medicine as we move into an era of regenerative treatments. Many of our clients come to us in need of help and guidance, we are passionate about ensuring patients feel seen and heard.”

Expert diagnostics enable Professor MacKenzie and the team to look at the whole person before deciding the best course of treatment. Clients can also

work with menopause and women’s health professionals, and Professor MacKenzie believes women can sometimes struggle to get what they need from the NHS. “There is so much research available and many patients come to us armed with knowledge, we’re here to help them understand what may be going on with their body,” she said. As the only female professor offering aesthetics in Scotland, she also performs minor surgical procedures. This can include skin lesion removal alongside body and leg vein injections. Clients range in age, although the oldest regular is one of the clinic’s most glamorous –surely a ringing endorsement. “She’s in her late eighties and always impeccably turned out, she embodies our very mission here at the clinic,” said Professor MacKenzie. “We have always attracted discerning clients in search of treatments which can help them make the very most of life. Remember, ageing is inevitable, decline is optional.”

You can contact the clinic on 01467 475599 or email reception@agereversaltherapies.co.uk More information is also available at agereversaltherapies.co.uk

Leading midwife talks all things fertility at Alpha

Embarking on a fertility journey can be one of the most difficult and all-consuming chapters in a person’s life. For Val Peddie, an expert mix of knowledge, dedication and empathy can enable patients to move forward irrespective of outcome. The Consultant Midwife and Fertility Specialist has supported hundreds of people on their journey to conceive and joined Alpha Hospital Group earlier this year after an impressive career spanning both private clinics and the NHS fertility preservation service. Alpha, which is the first independent hospital in the North of Scotland, now offers multiple fertility services for patients starting or currently embarking on fertility treatment, including IVF elsewhere and is a satellite partner of TFP GCRM Fertility in Glasgow. They also offer diagnostics, routine fertility screening, early pregnancy ultrasound, noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) and semen analysis, which prevents patients from having to travel to the central belt for appointments. Val brings an incredible wealth of expertise, having previously chaired the Royal College of Nursing

Midwifery and Fertility Nurses Forum. She is also current Chair of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology Nurses and Midwives Certification Committee.

“Patients have, and always will come first, and I feel very privileged to share their journey and provide long term reassurance both to couples and individuals,” said Val.

“The vast majority of patients I see attend for diagnostics or monitoring, and we provide same day results. For patients receiving IVF treatment elsewhere (including overseas), we work closely with their clinic. It’s also equally important to acknowledge and support men, as opposed to solely focusing on the female partner.”

Whilst Alpha does not provide IVF, it offers the key foundations alongside invaluable emotional support which includes expert fertility counselling. For Val, expertise and dedication set Alpha apart alongside a genuine commitment to each and every patient.

AWARD WINNING NURSE DESIGNS TARTAN WITH A DIFFERENCE

When Chloe Jackson doesn’t have a front row seat to cutting edge surgery, she can be found creating something which has helped others to feel less alone. Traditional Scottish weaves and the NHS might not seem to have an awful lot in common, but Chloe has somehow made the juggle work and even enjoyed the journey along the way. And thrive she has, after she was inspired to launch Scotland’s first neurodiversity tartan. Chloe found time in her intense schedule to chat with Trend on all things tartan, and why it’s so important to enable people with similar diagnoses to feel seen and heard.

“I have ADHD, autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia and dyspraxia—but this has never stopped me progressing in life,” said Chloe. “It has shaped my creativity, resilience and passion for what I do. The idea for neurodiversity tartan came after I wore a special tartan to my nursing graduation, where each colour had meaning

behind it. It made me think—why isn’t there something like this for neurodiversity”? Chloe set to work and focused on the story she wanted the tartan to tell. Lochcarron of Selkirk enabled her creation to become reality, with the final product following traditional tartan structure. From trendy scarves to beautiful lambswool blankets, Chloe has also branched out into stylish woven shawls and has even done a range for pets.

“It still feels a bit surreal to have founded the first and only Pride of Neurodiversity Tartan in the world,” said Chloe. “The response has been incredibly positive. People have deeply connected with the tartan, particularly those currently on long waiting lists for ADHD and autism assessments, as well as those who have recently received a neurodiversity diagnosis. Knowing it has helped individuals feel seen and understood is something I value immensely.” To find out more, go to neurodiversitytartan.co.uk

How can I protect my business if I divorce?

Nobody starts a business or gets married expecting things to go pear-shaped, but divorce can have serious implications for business owners. Here are some practical steps to safeguard your interests and make sure your business lives happily ever after:

1. Understand the law

Under the Family Law (Scotland) Act 1985, the net value of matrimonial property, which includes businesses started during marriage, is shared fairly (which means equally unless an unequal division is justified by special circumstances) on separation or divorce.

2. Beware of changes

Businesses started before marriage are generally not matrimonial property, but may become matrimonial property if, for example, the structure or ownership of a business is altered during marriage. Taking steps such as converting a sole trader business into a company or transferring shares to a spouse can unintentionally make part or all of your business matrimonial property. Seek advice before restructuring.

3. Consider contributions

Even if your business isn’t matrimonial property, a spouse may have grounds to make a financial claim if they contributed financially or otherwise to the business.

4. Co-ownership risks

If you and your spouse co-own the business, separation can lead to disputes over operational issues and profit sharing. There are also differences in the approach taken to the value of the business under family law and company law.

5. Act early

Proactive planning offers the best protection. Seek legal advice before marriage or altering the business structure.

6. Use Agreements

A well-drafted Pre- or Post-Nuptial Agreement can clarify how business assets will be treated on separation or divorce. Complement this with updated company documents like Partnership or Shareholder Agreements.

Taking these steps provides certainty, reduces risk and helps secure your business during challenging times.

Ferryhill looks to the future

Head chef Ross Boyd took us behind the scenes at The Ferryhill House Hotel, where you can expect new menus and a passion for local produce.

I started at Ferryhill at the start of this year having previously worked at Amuse and Cults Hotel. My career in hospitality actually started during my school days thanks to work experience. I started out as a Kitchen Porter, more commonly known as a KP in the industry, when I was 14 years old. I worked up the ranks in the kitchen and then did an apprenticeship

Chef focus

via Skills Development Scotland in Hospitality Training. I quickly realised that I had a passion for cooking, I started working full time in the kitchen and my career progressed from there. It’s been a really exciting time at Ferryhill after the revamped restaurant, Coterie, launched at the end of February 2025. It has not only helped to transform the venue, but also attracted new customers in search of a restaurant vibe. Since joining the team, we have launched a brand-new menu with a focus on seasonal ingredients and local produce wherever possible.

We are already working on our next menu which will launch very soon. We’re also looking to showcase more specials alongside foodie events. If I were to choose my top three dishes currently on offer, I’d start with the slow cooked pork belly with Gochujang glaze, I love the Korean influence. For my second dish, it would be Aberdeenshire red deer as it showcases amazing local produce. And finally, our lemon and herb panko breaded lemon sole; it is a classic dish, but it has been elevated to fit the restaurant surroundings.

When it comes to cooking, I really enjoy the creative aspect and trying out new techniques and recipes. The adrenalin rush of a busy service is strangely enjoyable. It’s all about good teamwork and preparation. As a busy hotel, bar and restaurant we need to not only be prepared but smart with our menu choices. Ultimately, it comes down to communication, coordination and hard work. Luckily, we have a few team members

who have been at The Ferryhill for a long time, so they know the place well.

For anyone wanting to break into the industry, I always tell people to get stuck in. You’ve got to be prepared for the good and bad, ask questions and always look to improve. At the Ferryhill we are looking to build on the strong foundations already

in place and enhance what we offer. The Coterie is the perfect example; it allows us to offer more of a stylish environment to enjoy restaurant style food with wine to match, where as our bar sticks to the pub classics – but done well. As we go into the busy summer months with one of the best outside terraces in Aberdeen, I am excited to showcase our new bar and foodie offering, watch this space.

Aberdeen set to welcome young performers for Light the Blue festival

A500 strong band of primary school pupils are set to transform Aberdeen’s city centre into a performance playground this June, when they take over Union Terrace Gardens to showcase an original piece encompassing drama, dance, visual art and music. School pupils have already started rehearsing as part of this year’s Light the Blue Festival, which is an initiative run by Aberdeen Performing Arts. It will take place across Aberdeen city centre from the 2nd to the 14th of June, when more than 1,000 young and professional artists, school pupils and early career creatives from across Scotland will come together to celebrate new and emerging talent. Aberdeen Performing Arts Chief Executive Sharon Burgess said: “Light the Blue is all about placing young and emerging creatives in the spotlight. It is the purest example of our mission to make the arts more accessible for all.” For tickets and to find out more, go to aberdeenperformingarts.com

A rose for every garden

Roses are a forever garden classic. Kirsty McLean talks us through some of her favourite blooms.

Roses are anything but old fashioned. With improved resistance and reliability, repeat flowering and a revival in the most incredible range of fragrances, they are a must have for any modern garden. Climbing, rambling or shrub, there is something for everyone - and to suit our climate here in the North of Scotland. A word of warning however, position is important. Whilst some varieties will tolerate a bit of shade, if you have a choice, it’s best to select a sunny, sheltered location protected from harsh winds. It’s also wise to ensure the ground is well-draining (avoid water-logged conditions!) and soil enriched with organic matter such as composted manure or task-specific compost.

If we rewind a little, the best time to plant roses is early spring or autumn before the frosts arrive. Plant the roses with the knobbly joint (known as the graft union) about 2 inches/5cm below the soil level to protect against frost. You can easily identify the graft union, it’s where the branches meet the roots. The planting hole should be wide enough to spread roots (roughly 45cm/18inches) and deep enough to accommodate this depth. Selecting the best rose for your garden is the hardest bit because there is just so much to choose from. But here is my list of tried and tested, broken down into handy categories.

Climbing

• New Dawn: Hardy, soft pink flowers that repeat and with a strong fragrance

• Zephirine Drouhin: Hardy, thornless, cerise-pink

– long flowering, fragrant and tolerant of light shade.

• The Generous Gardener: Hardy, pale pink, repeat flowering with an old Rose musk scent.

• Dublin Bay: Compact, hardy, deep red rose with a delicate fragrance.

• Albertine: Salmon-pink, highly scented flowers that repeat.

• Felicite Perpetue: Creamy-white, hardy, scented rose that will tolerate shade.

• Paul’s Himalayan Musk Pale: Pink vigorous growth with a strong musk fragrance, tolerates partial shade.

From hybrid tea roses to shrub roses, there’s a rose to suit almost every garden. We’re incredibly lucky to have our very own local grower here in the North-east. Cocker’s Roses has been growing roses suitable for our climate since 1841, so you can’t go wrong. And lastly, if you want a more natural, wilder look to grow as a hedge for instance, then Rosa rugosa or Rosa spinosissima (Scotch Rose or Burnet Rose) are what you need. They are incredibly strongly scented with a sweet, heady/ honey-like smell and very vigorous, so be careful where you plant them.

Luck of the Irish

As talk turns to the summer holidays and sandy beach destinations, we like to offer something that bit different at Trend. If you’re still unsure as where next to explore in the world not least because of ongoing unrest in the Middle East, might we gently suggest journeying a little closer to home. Not so much a staycation as a short domestic flight; grab your shamrock, we’re heading to Belfast. Political differences aside, Belfast is thought to be a more budget friendly option in comparison to the lively Dublin. If you’re in search of an authentic and traditional experience, think incredible maritime history as opposed to thriving nightlife scene. Given that Belfast and Dublin are a mere two hours apart by train, you could even find time to squeeze in both. But for this edition of Trend at least, we’re planting our feet firmly on the cobbled streets of Belfast, eager for rich stories spun from a fascinating past.

Direct flights are available from Aberdeen to Belfast City airport, and you’re only a mere hour in the air before touching down. If you missed the amazing Titanic exhibition when it docked at P&J Live, Belfast has gone one better. Regardless of your opinion as to whether Jack could squeeze onto that door frame, (he absolutely could) Titanic Belfast should be top of your list. The Titanic was built in the Harland & Wolff shipyard, and this highly poignant museum has been named the World’s Leading Tourist Attraction. Moving exhibits are spaced over nine galleries and include an underwater cinema. We suggest booking tickets in advance, as thousands of people visit each year. You’ll want to put aside at least half a day, and there are multiple options where you can grab a bite to eat. Ulster museum is also well worth a visit, having undergone a multi-million redevelopment. It features fine art from around the world, plus exhibitions which tell the story of Belfast’s craft trade. Don’t forget to admire the

only dinosaur bones ever found in Ireland.

Pack comfortable shoes as next on your list should be the famous St George’s Market. It’s worth noting that it’s only open Friday to Sunday, so plan ahead accordingly. Foodies will be wowed by fresh seafood, trying the local soda bread and an Ulster fry is an absolute must. The variety market held on a Friday dates back to 1604 and boasts more than 200 stalls. Entry is free, leaving you with plenty of spending money for delicious cuisine, plus antiques and books.

Other brilliant sights include Crumlin Road Gaol, not dissimilar from our brilliant offering in Peterhead. If you want to take in the brisk Irish air, there’s plenty to explore at Cave Hill Country Park. Belfast zoo is only five minutes away, and is ideal for all the family. We can’t promise you perfect weather, but you’ll leave Belfast having fallen in love with the beauty of Northern Ireland.

Where the wild things are

They say you should never work with children or animals, so we’ve decided to combine the two together for the ultimate fun day out. Both my children love animals, and I’ve found that introducing them early on has really contributed to their respect and kindness for all creatures great and small. There’s some brilliant hands-on experience to be had in the North-east, with animal themed activities to suit all budgets. Here at Trend we love a list, so have compiled the top three days out where you can experience animals up close and personal. Remember to wash your hands following any lovely encounter, especially if your little one is feeding animals.

PETS CORNER AT HAZLEHEAD

BEST BUDGET PETS CORNER HAZLEHEAD

I always feel nostalgic when visiting Pets Corner which can be found at Hazlehead Park. My eight year old still loves it there, although thankfully no longer tries to climb in with the donkeys. The one-year-old has recently been introduced and was a huge fan of the goats. Although Pets Corner is quite small, there’s a good selection ranging from impressive reptiles to very friendly ponies, and even meerkats. If you go on a dreich day, you’ll soon warm up inside where the snakes, lizards and fish are kept. There are also guinea-pigs and rabbits alongside a resident peacock. A family ticket comes in at £9.96 and children under three go free. It opens from 10am-3:15pm, ten out of ten recommend.

FARM STOP PORTLETHEN

BEST HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE FARM STOP

Farm Stop is a fantastic interactive experience where you can get up close and personal with a wide range of animals. You can cuddle, feed and brush some very inquisitive goats before meeting pigs, donkeys, ducks, chickens, alpacas, sheep and cattle including Highland Cows. Visitors spend time in each pen as part of the tour, where you’ll learn some fun facts about each animal. Booking is essential and a child ticket comes in at £13.50 (age 2 and above) whilst an adult ticket is £20. In my experience it is absolutely worth it however, and seems to get better with each visit.

HUNTLY FALCONRY CENTRE

BEST QUIRKY EXPERIENCE

HUNTLY FALCONRY CENTRE

I booked a visit to Huntly Falconry Centre when my youngest was just five months old. I was also flying solo as my husband was at work; two kids and birds of prey, what could possibly go wrong? We had a fantastic day out and my eldest was honestly enthralled. The falconry display team introduce you to some incredible birds and hold flying demonstrations three times a day during the peak summer months. Members of the audience are invited to participate so you can experience firsthand how these beautiful birds behave and feel close up. From hawks to falcons and eagles, it’s a brilliant day out and there’s a small but lovely café on site. An adult ticket costs £13 with a child ticket coming in at £7, fairly economical for the purse strings.

Trend’s annual Garden Party was yet again a fantastic and successful event at Marcliffe. The charity which benefitted on the day was SAMH and their Nook opening this Summer in Aberdeen. We would like to thank everyone involved in making the day a success, Marcliffe and their staff, Blinding light, Thoughts and Crosses, Finnies the Jeweller, Scott Cruickshank, Paul Black, Bekkah Davidson, all the exhibitors and raffle providers. And finally to all the guests who attended and helped raise money for SAMH.

Charity Focus: Behind the scenes at New Arc

From poorly puffins to badgers who have met mishaps, the dedicated team at New Arc has seen it all. This small yet mighty wildlife rescue charity can be found just outside of Ellon in Aberdeenshire, where the team is currently in the middle of its busiest season. They deal with more than 2,000 wildlife casualties each year, ranging from birds to otters, bats and everything in between. Determined couple, Morgane Ristic and Paul Reynolds took over three years ago, having worked in wildlife rescue around the world. Educating the public is a huge part of their vision, alongside building new enclosures on site for a wide variety of furry and feathered patients. “We couldn’t do what we do without the amazing support of our volunteers on site, alongside the support of the people of the North-east,” said Paul. “We find beauty in every patient who comes through our

doors, and we are so grateful for every single donation.” The charity recently made headlines having rescued a recordbreaking puffin earlier this year. The poorly seabird is believed to be the oldest ringed puffin ever recorded, and the team are on a mission to help multiple puffins return to the sea following stormy weather over the winter. They are also at the forefront of a moving campaign to encourage drivers to get in touch as soon as possible should they hit a deer. The team routinely attend collisions where deer have been left to suffer on the side of the road. “Many of the casualties we attend are alive but in significant pain and distress,” said Paul. “If you hit a deer in our region, please call us on 01358 701723.” To find out more about New Arc, visit their Facebook page or go to newarcwildliferescue.org

My Motherhood: Laura Patterson on why mums deserve better care

Our next instalment of My Motherhood is a true celebration of women’s health both pre and post baby, after a North-east mum was inspired by her own challenges. We caught with the wonderful Laura Patterson, who launched RefromPyhsio and Pilates in 2020 whilst raising her two children. She went on to open Aberdeen’s very first Reformer Pilates studio, where she is also leading the way on pelvic floor rehab.

“My vision was to grow a team of experts while maintaining a supportive environment for working mothers; that remains a core part of who we are today. My own challenges have fuelled my mission: to ensure women receive the pelvic health support that they deserve. I experienced significant pelvic girdle pain during my first pregnancy and continued to struggle with pelvic pain postnatally.

I have genuinely loved the evolving challenges of motherhood. While many people lament the passing of the early years, I’ve found that I truly love each new stage more than the last. I may reserve judgment when they hit the teenage years. I launched ReformPhysio & Pilates when my youngest was just three and a half, so my children have essentially grown up alongside the business. Seeing them witness that journey from the beginning has been one of the most unexpected joys of the last six years. As a society, we expect mothers to put up with so much, to just ‘get on with it’ regardless of the physical or mental toll. My passion stems from the belief that so much of what we experience during and after pregnancy could be vastly improved with the correct support at the right time. We shouldn’t have to accept pain or dysfunction as a standard part of the journey; with the right expert care, we can do more than just survive motherhood, we can thrive in it.”

EWA RANKIN ON HER LOVE FOR MALMAISON

Whether you’re a regular guest or just popping in past, a trip to Malmaison isn’t complete without meeting the wonderful Ewa Rankin. The dedicated cluster events and sales manager splits her time across Malmaison and Hotel du Vin yet never forgets a face. We caught up with Ewa to find out more.

“I grew up in a beautiful town called Olsztyn in Poland and came to Scotland in 2005. I was visiting my brother who lived in Dundee, I planned to stay a few weeks and help him move to Glasgow. I never left, although the story of how I got my first job in Scotland is funny to say the least. I already had hospitality experience from working in the States as a student. I was a housekeeper in the morning and a waitress in the evening. I rarely had a day off but I learnt so much and caught the hospitality bug. I must have applied for at least 30 jobs in Glasgow before I got a voicemail for an interview at what was then Jurys Inn. I turned up and was told there were no interviews that day. It was only afterwards and to my horror, I had misheard the name of the hotel due to the strong Glaswegian accent. I was meant to go to Bewleys Hotel instead. Thankfully I got offered a job at both sites, and spent eight years at Jurys before moving to Malmaison in 2013.

The best part of working in hospitality is that there is no such thing as an average day. I usually prepare myself a to do list the day before, sometimes I don’t

get round to completing it as other things pull me away. We work as a team and always support each other. My day is usually filled with business development meetings, networking at local events, managing my inbox, researching new opportunities and keeping in touch with an extensive base of loyal customers and ambassadors to the brand.

Hospitality is all about people; what I love the most about my job is meeting so many interesting folk. I still meet with the same guests who visited Mal in 2013. They might not be travelling as often, but they get in touch when they book in. I love speaking to guests and learning where they are from, what brings them to Mal and getting their feedback.

The biggest challenge is the constantly changing market conditions, but Malmaison will always stand out. This is because of our exceptional service, curated and freshly prepared food and trendy beverage offering, plus our relaxing SPA. We also boast a great location with an amazing outside terrace and an incredible team. Malmaison Aberdeen is a boutique hotel with its own unique identity.

I genuinely love what I do, I’d advise anyone entering hospitality to be resilient and know your goals. Listening is so important, always work as part of the team. And finally, don’t be scared to ask for help. It’s a sign of strength, not weakness.
