FROM THE EDITOR

Hello again,

It must be spring. The daffodils are out, the days are longer and the new season’s crop of roadworks and bus gates is in full bloom all over the city centre. We never thought we’d need satnav or an advanced degree in geography to find our way across our own city, but there you go.

A new season brings new possibilities, whether that’s updating your wardrobe with some brighter colours, or treating yourself to a new look, hair colour or going out for a meal to somewhere you’ve never tried before. It might even mean taking up a new form of exercise like a yoga class or pickleball, or planning a trip away.

The things that bring us pleasure are increasingly important when so many things seem to be wrong with the world. Having a little treat or two to look forward to is essential for our health and wellbeing, otherwise life just becomes a drudge. It needn’t be expensive, look for simple ways to make life more exciting and pleasurable. A walk in the country, a little window shopping, meeting a friend for lunch or even going for a stroll along the beach, or a paddle if you’re feeling brave can be an uplifting experience.

You’ll find lots of ideas for making the most of spring in this issue.

ickleball is frequently played in a doubles format and the game's rules make it quite a tactical game rather than a power only game. It’s one of those games where age and guile are a match for youth and enthusiasm, and the smaller courts make it a great choice for anyone who finds tennis a bit of a strain. This summer’s Scottish Nationals and Masters Championships even include categories for

Mhairi Adam, Chair of Pickleball Scotland explained, ‘Pickleball Scotland offers two-hour introductory sessions. It’s easy to learn, huge fun and very sociable. People get addicted and start to improve really quickly, so there are clubs and tournaments for those that are competitive. It’s also cheaper than many other racquet sports. Pickleball paddles start at around £50 and balls are around £3 each.’

Pickleball first came to Aberdeen eight years ago as part of the Golden Games event for older people. Grampian Pickleball Club was formed in 2021. There’s an evening session at Lochside Academy and adhoc daytime sessions at Sheddocksley Sports Centre. There are also groups at Aberdeen Sports Village, Inverurie’s Garioch Sports Centre, one in Fettercairn and it’s possible to book a court at Stonehaven Leisure Centre too.

Kippie Lodge also offers regular sessions. Kippie's Nicky Caldwell commented, 'Pickleball is our fastest-growing sport with many members

joining classes throughout the week. It's fun, easy to pick up and it’s a sport that all ages can play. Kippie also run pickleball social groups where members can meet up to have fun and stay active.' Active Lifestyles has sessions at Get Active Jesmond and Kincorth.

Your family’s fitness and fun HQ
You may not have heard of Pickleball, but it’s the fastest growing sport in America and it’s gaining ground in Scotland too. It’s great fun for all ages and is played on a badminton court, with a tennis-style net and solid paddles like over-sized table tennis bats and an air-flow ball. It’s also the only sport named after a family dog.

Trying to grow eyelashes can take plenty of time and patience. Eyelashes are built of keratin, like all hair. In turn, keratin is built from amino acids. Our natural eyelash growth cycle is around eight weeks, so lash serums and natural collagen supplements can take anywhere from two to twelve months to show real results.

If you’re looking for significantly longer-looking lashes in a hurry, Bloom’s Sheona Forrest advocates for their LVL lash tint and lift treatment. Sheona commented, ‘It’s one of our favourite and most popular services here at Bloom. It adds volume, depth and length to the lashes by lifting, curling and tinting them to create the perfect natural glam lash, for your non make-up,

make-up free days. LVL also comes with low maintenance aftercare, we recommend using the Nouveau lash conditioning serum (RRP £19.99) to keep your lashes hydrated and protected against environmental pollutants. LVL can last up to 6-8 weeks with the correct homecare.

Brenda Cardno at Treat Company’s salon in Inverallochy offers a full menu of lash treatments. ‘As well as LVL, we can tint lashes, making them appear darker and fuller, or our Lash Lift treatment is like a perm for the lashes, raising them into a curve and opening up the eye. We also have a full range of eyelash extension and false lash treatments, from 1:1 lashes to a fuller, more dramatic look with our hybrid or volume lashes. Eyelash extensions last for up to a month with care. Infill is required after 2 weeks, which will last another 2 weeks.

False lashes can be fiddly and there’s always the fear that one’s going to fall off during dinner, but the trick is to apply the glue, then leave it for a minute before application, according to

Inverurie-based makeup genius Julia Strachan. Julia has her own line of false lashes available at jewelcosmetics.co.uk. There are nine sets to choose from, from the natural-looking Cotai, to the full-on showgirl looks of Vegas.

If treatments and false lashes are not for you, a serum might be just the thing to promote the growth of longer, thicker lashes. RapidLash’s Eyelash

Enhancing Serum is an awardwinning formula packed with polypeptides, biotin, amino acids, pumpkin seed extract and soybean oil that promises results in as little as eight weeks. You need to apply it to the base of the upper eyelashes before bed and dream of improved lash durability, shine, sheen and overall healthier-looking appearance. You’ll find it on lookfantastic.com for £40.

Mascara can be a bit hit and miss, with different formulas looking great on one person and making the next look like a depressed panda. Eyeko’s award-winning Black Magic Mascara is enriched with a botanical shea butter blend to help care for your lashes, while intensely volumising and curling.

Its lash-hugging shape coats every lash from root to tip to lengthen, lift and add curves to your eye makeup look. The mascara's nourishing formula delivers full-bodied eyelashes whilst providing long-term care with a carbon black finish that stays put without smudging, flaking or crumbling. Find it at thehut.com for £19.

I started Phyte Club to create a reputable and health-focused brand designed to help improve quality of life. The product range focuses on three areasfitness, skincare, and mental wellbeing. I think of it as Sport, Skin and Spirit.

Whether it’s for an engagement, wedding or to mark a significant anniversary or life event, rings have long symbolised a couple’s commitment and romantic relationship.

If you’re getting engaged, our design consultations offer the perfect starting point to express your love. Many couples prefer to create a ring together, to suit their tastes and budget. Lava can source amazing gemstones, from diamonds, sapphires and emeralds to less conventional choices and ethically-mined stones.

If you have heirloom pieces, we can often work with the stones and precious metals to redesign an engagement ring that combines family traditions with modern design, creating something unique that may even be passed on to generations to come.

Lava can design custom wedding bands that incorporate meaningful messages, or that are shaped to sit perfectly with your engagement ring. You can even create your own wedding bands in Lava’s workshop. Duncan, one of Scotland’s most skilled makers, will gently guide you

through every step, so your love shines through in the end result! You’ll carve your rings in wax before they are cast in the metal of your choice and then finished, polished and hallmarked to give a professional result. There will even be a glass of something cold and bubbly at the end of the session to celebrate.

The eternity ring is a symbol of enduring love. It might be a gift for a significant anniversary or to mark the birth of a child. Lava can design eternity rings in diamonds or coloured stones that complement existing engagement and wedding ring sets.

Let Lava design the perfect symbol of your love.

Spring offers the chance to throw off a few layers and opt for bright shades that lift the spirits. Step out of the shadows and fill your day with a pop of colour. Leafy shades of green remain popular, with hot colours also making a comeback for spring and summer. Mix it up with multi-coloured stripes, florals and checks for a fresh look, or choose paler pinks and creams for a less bold approach to the new season’s styles.

As we age, our facial shape and lifestyles change, so having the same hairstyle we had in school or in our first job probably isn’t doing us any favours. It’s tempting to stick with one style, but working with a stylist who can adapt a cut to suit your facial features and the shape of your head can leave you looking years younger.

30 | MENS EDIT

There are lots of factors to take into account when considering a new style. Hair often grows in irregular patterns or you may have a double crown so finding a hairdresser or barber who asks a lot of questions about your lifestyle and haircare routine is vital. Showing them some photos of cuts you’re considering is useful as they can adapt a cut to suit.

Daniel

explained, ‘We’re finding that as people return to work, or continue to work from home, that men’s styling has become more relaxed. It’s about manageability, confidence and practicality. Lockdown proved that most of us can’t style our own hair, so we’re finding that our clients really appreciate having a small amount of time in the day to find a relaxed comfortable environment to unwind, relax, and enjoy music and a chat while getting their hair cut or being barbered.

Denise Fyvie of The Men’s Emporium says finding a style that works is a matter of working with what you have, not against it. ‘If your hairline is receding, a style that flows with the hair growth pattern and a short choppy textured can look great, as can a soft buzz cut, or a slicked back style. Longer, unruly styles can shave years off your look, but not everyone suits them. A short, textured style offers the option of controlled length that appears a bit wild.

‘The main trends at the moment are the Regulation Cut, which a longer version of the army cut, that requires precision cutting. It’s combed over with a defined parting and longer scissor-cut sides.

Cleavin of Cleavin Barbers
MENS EDIT | 31

‘A more striking style for a receding hairline is the high fade haircut. By clipping the sides and tapering the length from the bottom up you can control the way in which your hairline is perceived. A higher fade will draw attention away from a receding hairline and toward your longer hair on top. The style is best suited to men with a hairline in its early stages of receding.’

If the shaven-headed look is not for you, it’s worth considering a hair replacement system. Luisa Flores, of Florescence explained, ‘If you have male pattern baldness, thinning hair, or, in some cases, alopecia areata, we can offer custom-made replacements. The systems are on a thin skin like base. The area being treated is shaved off and a template is made. The colour-matched hair piece is then cut to size, secured in place and styled, with a

maintenance visit every 4-6 weeks. We have a private room in the salon, so it’s a very discrete service.

Bloom have just opened a new flagship salon in London which features heritage brand J.M. Keune’s range of men’s grooming products. ‘A new style can make you look fresher and younger,’ explained Sheona Forrest. ‘A well-trimmed tapered side might work for some, while a classic short back & side scissor cut might work for others. For those with curly hair on top we recommend a mid-skin fade or an undercut for a vintage look.

‘Going grey is a common issue. Keune has a specific men’s colour range for grey blending which will soften the appearance of greys, this is a great option for you to look naturally younger.’

you. It sleeps two and is nestled amongst ancient vineyards and lush olive groves. It’s an ideal setting for a peaceful and slow paced holiday, with the beach just a four minute car journey away in the pretty little port of Aliki.

Paros is worth exploring in its own right, but also makes a great base for island hopping with day trips to Antiparos, Naxos, Mykonos, and Tinos all possible. You can fly into Athens, then take a 25 minute flight to Athens or opt for a 31/2 hour high speed ferry from Pireus, Athens’ port. Discover more at oneoffplaces.co.uk.

A castle fit for a princess

FAIRBURN TOWER, MUIR OF ORD

The Landmark Trust buys and restores quirky buildings, then rents them out as unique holiday homes. Fairburn Town near Muir of Ord is one of their latest restoration projects. The pink tower house is a Scottish Renaissance treasure, built around 1545 for Murdo Mackenzie, a favourite at the rich court of King James V and Mary of Guise and a loyal Jacobite family in the 1700s. It sleeps four people with four nights costing £424 and upwards depending on the season. There are two twin beds and a double available, though we think it’d be more romantic for a break for two, especially if you have Outlander fantasies.

If a castle’s not for you, the Landmark Trust has 200 buildings to choose from including picturesque pavilions and medieval longhouses, artillery forts and gothic follies, cotton weavers’ cottages, the homes of great writers and the creations of great architects, with locations from Cornwall to Wick. Because the Trust’s properties are so unique, demand is high, with many already fully booked into 2024. The website has a useful feature which shows all available properties for a few weeks ahead if you can’t wait. Find out more at landmarktrust.org.uk

A cave house in Andalucia

Perhaps somewhere warmer but still pretty cool? How about living in a cave in Spain? Okay, it’s a bit more upscale than your typical hermit’s abode, having a shared pool, internet access and the nearest shops and restaurants just a five minute drive away, but the still of the mountains can make you feel like you’re living in another world. It’s a great choice for a recharging break. If you’re feeling healthy, you could go cycling, riding, fishing, walking or taking part in watersports. Alternatively, there’s a hammock on the terrace.

Castillejar lies inland in the mountains southern Spain, so a hire car is a necessity if you plan on exploring. The Moorish city of Grenada is a couple of hours away, with Malaga, Cordoba and Almeria all a little further. Find out more at oneoffplaces.co.uk

A floating surprise

Fingal is TripAdvisor’s highest ranked hotel in Edinburgh and the epitome of quiet luxury. Once a lighthouse support ship, it was converted into an amazing floating hotel, restaurant and bar, with 22 cabin bedrooms and a Presidential Suite.

Originally, the vessel belonged to the Northern Lighthouse Board, and was commissioned in 1963. Over the years, the ship served in Oban and Stromness

up in Orkney before being retired in 2000. After a spell in Cornwall, Fingal was acquired by The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust in 2014.

The conversion took five years but the wait was definitely worth it. Every detail is so well thought out and the food and service second to none. Even the restaurant’s signature salmon is smoked on board.

You can watch the sun go down over the harbour in Leith, cocktail in hand, before exploring the seasonal menu.

The location makes it easy to explore all Edinburgh has to offer, from shopping at Multrees Walk or the nearby Ocean Terminal, exploring the city’s galleries and antique shops and visiting the Royal Yacht Britannia, Fingal’s next door neighbour.

A cosy croft house on Skye

If it’s a simpler life you’re after, then the National Trust for Scotland may have the very thing. Beaton’s Croft House is near Uig, on the North West tip of Skye. The traditional thatched blackhouse sleeps two and comes with a woodburning stove. There’s no Wi-Fi or TV, so it’s great for a digital detox. It’s also six miles to the nearest shop and 4.5 to the pub, so you’ll probably need your hiking boots and a book or two.

If you want to venture out, Skye has plenty of places to explore, from the Cuillin Mountains and Dunvegan Castle, to local potteries, breweries, outdoor adrenalin sports centres and distilleries, or just wandering round Portree while stocking up for dinner. Skye also boasts some superb restaurants, with The Three Chimneys, Edinbane Lodge, Scorrybreac and The Loch Bay all making the most of local produce and having mentions in the Michelin Guide.

Enjoy a sumptuous Afternoon Tea with a glass of champagne on arrival wearing your finest Garden Party attire with the chance to win Best Dressed Lady and Hat of the Day.

The city and shire’s hospitality sector has not been having an easy time of it over the past few years. The pandemic and cost of living crisis isn’t doing them

ITALIAN

Peterculter’s Borsalino is great for large gatherings and you can’t go far wrong with a restaurant that serves a calzone as big as your head and has staff that randomly burst into operatic arias. The only downside is that it’s not suitable for wheelchairs because of the entrance steps.

Da Vinci is tucked away on Alford Lane. The imaginative menu includes lots of vegan choices and they do good cocktails too.

Mi Amore on Huntly Street offers a modern take on Italian cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere. The set menu and pre-theatre menus offer good value, but leave room for the sticky orange chocolate cake.

INDIAN

Where to find the best curry in town is always a contentious topic. We all have our favourites, but we’re pretty happy to go anywhere that has lots of poppadoms.

Shri Bheema has branches on Belmont Street and in Bridge of Don. They combine an extensive menu with generous portions, lots of dishes you won’t find elsewhere and tons of vegetarian options.

Stonehaven’s Carron to Mumbai features elegant Art Deco surroundings with fine-dining Indian dishes. It’s particularly strong on fish dishes like Monkfish Asamese Rogni.

Jewel in the Crown is a long-term Aberdeen favourite. Vegetarians have to make do with a selection of side dishes, as there are no veggie mains, but it just means two delicious dishes instead of one. It’d be a great choice for someone’s first ever Indian meal as the staff are exceptionally helpful.

8848 on Union Street are known for their brilliant biryanis and what might, just possibly, be the best dal makhani in town.

Both Nurtaj and Mount Everest used to be in the city centre, but have relocated to the shire. Blackburn is now home to Mount Everest which gets rave reviews for its Nepalese and Indo-Tibetan menu despite its business park location. It’s worth the trip to Aboyne to try Nurtaj’s Broccoli Chana Soul Tiger or unexpected delights like their Pinacolada chicken.

ASIAN

Go back twenty years and Aberdeen had many more Chinese restaurants. There are fewer Asian options these days, but sometimes we gain in quality when quantity suffers.

any favours – so we thought we would! Here’s our guide to some of our favourite places to eat and what we love about them…

Yorokobi by CJ is an understated Japanese and Korean restaurant on Huntly Street. The lunch and early bird menus offer great value, and the sushi’s always incredibly fresh. Lots of noodly dishes and plenty of choice for vegetarians and gluten free diets.

Taste of Hong Kong moved from Aberdeen Market to the Adelphi where it’s developing a reputation for great food and customer service. Not the easiest bit of town to park in, though, so stroll up from Union Square.

Koh Thai on Rosemount Place is charmingly decorated and very inclusive, with menus for vegans and vegetarians, gluten free and kids. The mixed starters are a must order, but it’s difficult to go wrong.

The Royal Thai has been tucked away on Crown Terrace for over 30 years. Go for a banquet menu or a delightful sea bass marinated with Thai herbs, wrapped in banana leaves and served with chilli lime dressing.

Much like the Royal Thai, it feels like The Manchurian on Causewayend has been around for ever. It’s probably still the city’s best purveyor of dim sum, though.

PUB GRUB

Sometimes a bit of pub grub is just what’s needed. Robust, full-flavoured and unfussy dishes are the mainstay of the menu at McGinty’s Meal & Ale on Union Street. The Steak pie’s always a winner, though we have a sneaking affection for the loaded fries topped with AO Cuban spiced halloumi.

The Airedale out at Logie Coldstone is everything a pub diner should be, friendly and good humoured, with a menu packed with family favourites and excellent chips.

SOMETHING FISHY

Given our coastal setting and proximity to Peterhead, the biggest white fish port in Europe, it’s not surprising we have some outstanding fish restaurants, from Silver Darling down on Pocra Quay and Fraserburgh’s The Captain’s Table, to multi-award winning takeaways like The Bay in Stonehaven and Westhill’s Low’s Fish and Chips

MICHELIN MENTIONS

We now have half a dozen restaurants that merit a mention in the Michelin Guide. Moonfish Café is always innovative and may possibly be the only place in Aberdeen that can make cold broccoli taste delicious. If you’re looking for a gourmet treat, then try Amuse by Kevin Dalgleish on Queen’s Terrace, Rothsay Rooms, Alford’s family-friendly Kildrummy Inn, The Fife Arms’ Clunie Dining Room or Stonehaven’s Tolbooth. None are cheap, the menus focus on three or four seasonal starters and mains using the best local produce and vegetarians are catered for, but rarely offered a choice.

CHECK OUR NEXT ISSUE FOR OUR PICK OF THE BEST PLACES FOR COFFEE AND CAKE, VEGGIE AND VEGAN FOOD, NEW OPENINGS AND PLACES TO GO FOR SPECIAL CELEBRATIONS, LATE NIGHTS AND EARLY MORNINGS.

RESIDENT-X

Resident-X is the city’s fresh and exciting new venue that’s the perfect choice for a catch-up with friends, a work night out or grabbing a few drinks and some amazing street food. It’s what the city’s been waiting for!

From the one-of-a-kind light tunnel, two cocktail bars and street food vendors, Resident-X has an amazing vibe and energy. It’s a welcoming space with something for everyone, so it doesn’t matter if you’re twenty or sixty, you’ll still have a great time.

There’s always something going on. On Sundays, the Hair of the Dog acoustic sessions showcase talented local musicians for a relaxed end to the weekend.

Resident-X has two bars. LAB X’s bartenders specialise in creative mixology, so there’s always something innovative but delicious on the cocktail menu. Who could

resist the ocean blue Bathbomb complete with a tiny rubber duck floating on top? From Sunday to Thursday, there are also special £5 cocktail deals.

The Oval Bar majors in classical cocktails as well as offering a fine selection of spirits and draught beers. The Oval’s the place to watch the football or rugby with some mates.

When you’re feeling peckish, there’s a choice of four independent street food vendors. Try The Baby Jewel’s moreish Indian delicacies, Acropolis’s scrummy Greek dishes, succulent chicken wings or strips from PLUCK or a smash burger from local favourites ABERDAM Dutch Fries’ new offshoot DAM Burger. It’s not often you find a place that pleases everyone, but Resident-X pulls it off in style!

Open noon till midnight Sunday to Thursday and noon till 1am on Friday and Saturday.

Lindsey explained, ‘Claire trained in textiles and interiors and I did architecture. We began working together on interior projects over 10 years ago. We realised a mutual love of colour, pattern and passion for contemporary design that eventually led to us to forming Granite + Smoke. We create playful, graphic and modern products that are beautifully crafted and responsibly made in the UK.’

Claire chipped in, ‘Luckily, it’s easy for us to design together. The biggest challenge is juggling all the elements of running your own business and doing it ourselves. We had to pick up so many new skills - everything from PR and websites to cash flow and VAT. We spend a lot of time on Zoom, but it’s really helped us define our aesthetic and establish the core values and vision for our brand.

‘When we’re not working we enjoy spending time with our families and friends; cooking and eating nice food, spending time outdoors, visiting and exploring new places and occasionally binge watching Netflix! We also enjoy getting creatively hands on, whether that’s doing some drawings and crafts with the kids, or learning a new skill like jewellery making and pottery.’

Lindsey added, ‘As Granite + Smoke, we think of our work as creating joyful luxury with a conscience! Our first collection included blankets, cushions and wall hangings made

from ethically sourced cashmere and recycled wool, each item is woven and hand finished by local specialists in limited runs on jacquard looms at socially responsible, historic mills in Scotland and England. We’re all about optimistic colour combinations inspired by the geometry and simplicity of London’s iconic Brutalist architecture.

‘We choose partners who support local supply chains and prioritise communities and worker well-being. Our lambswool and cashmere throws are crafted at a Scottish mill dating back to 1866 and we work with a heritage weaver in England. The combination of traditional techniques and modern production meant we could create a sustainable collection of luxury products with an uplifting contemporary aesthetic.

Claire continued, ‘As well as traditional craft skills, we’re inspired by modernism and the Bauhaus movement and artists and designers like Anni and Joseph Albers, architect Le Corbusier and furniture designers like Charles and Ray Eames. The 1980s work by the Memphis group influences our preference for an optimistic palette and bold graphic designs. Current work by artists and designers such as

Yinka Iloria, Patricia Urquolia, Peter Haley, Bridgett Riley, David Hockney and Hella Jongerius all feeds into what we do, too.

‘Our full collection can be viewed and bought from our website at graniteandsmoke.com. The wonderful Sirene Boutique in Aberdeen stocks a selection of our lambswool/ cashmere and recycled wool collection as does the iconic twentytwentyone store in London. Plus a selection of our lambswool/ cashmere collection is now on the Paul Smith website. Our recycled wool blankets and cushions are also online through luxury homewares marketplace Glassette and we have recently launched our full collection on Clippings; an online trade platform set up to offer design professionals a new way to specify, source and procure furniture, lighting and accessories. We are very excited to be launching in some other great retail spaces and online stores in the near future.’

The Switched-ON AV & Lighting Specialists

Back in 1995, Scott Cruickshank has a lightbulb moment that saw him switch careers from video and TV production to form Blinding Light.

Over the past 26 years, Blinding Light, Sound & Visual have become one of Scotland’s leading Audio Visual and Lighting specialists for the retail, leisure and hospitality sectors, both locally and internationally. Many of Scotland’s most successful bars, restaurants, hotels and entertainment venues have worked with Blinding Light over the years.

Scott commented, ‘We thrive on projects that push the envelope, often working with design teams and clients to push ourselves to come up with bespoke elements that our customers will see as innovative and unique. It can often push us slightly out of our comfort zone, but the results are very much more rewarding.

‘We regularly work with Abercrombie & Fitch, completing lighting and AV installations in most of their UK stores and also across Ireland and the Middle East including installing the 220 panel

video wall in their flagship Hollister store in Dubai Mall.

‘We have also installed all the larger key sites for local giant BrewDog including several DogHouse Hotels and recently the UK’s largest bar at Waterloo Station which features 19 screens, two meeting rooms, a podcast studio, speakeasy and 6 lane bowling alley.

‘A large amount of our work also involves consulting on customer facing areas to ensure the venue is complemented by lighting. It can be a minefield since the transition to LED regarding dimming and colour temperatures but we can assist to get the best out of your venue and can take the time to explain why certain things just work when others don't. The lighting can make or break a venue. We take great pride in being able to design and install the AV and lighting to the direct client's full satisfaction.’

Growing your own has become incredibly popular and it’s easy to understand why. Growing outdoors, surrounded by nature feeds the soul, not just the tummy! Nothing beats the flavour and nutrient-packed-power of freshly picked veg, salad, herbs and fruits.

58 | GARDENS

Being able to pick only what you need means less waste and your produce stays fresher in the ground. Growing your own, means you choose not just what you want to grow but how you want to grow it, giving you complete control over what method of pest control you use, which fertiliser and how you water your crop.

Growing what you eat is fun for the whole family and teaches the kids where their food comes from. It’s also a great way of helping the household budget and the planet and some of your harvest can be frozen to extend the season.

You don’t need a big garden or an allotment to start growing your own – any space will do as long as it gets good levels of sunshine and shelter. Whilst the ideal may be to have a veg patch so you get quantity, you can also grow crops in smaller spaces such as window boxes, patio containers, in raised beds or even hanging baskets by choosing the right veg/fruit or herb for the space. Tomatoes and chillies can thrive on a kitchen windowsill.

It can seem like a bit of a daunting task and overwhelming with the amount of information out there but, like everything, baby steps are best.

Fruit

Alpine strawberries are cheap to buy, easy to grow and taste amazing. Fruit bushes such as currants, gooseberries, blueberries, and tayberries (best bought as bare root canes over the Autumn/ Winter) can be grown in a container as well as a plot. Just remember to protect from wildlife. Apple, pear and plum trees can be grown in a large container or trained onto a sunny wall. Fruit bushes and trees may require support.

Veg

Can be grown inside from seed early in the season around March and hardened off ready to be planted outside, late April/early May or sown directly outdoors April/May according to ground temperature. Seeds are great value and

all you have to do is follow the instructions on the packet! There are lots of growing calendars/ charts online to keep you right. Salad leaves and radishes take just a few weeks before they are ready to eat. Carrots, parsnips, beetroot, leeks, brassicas, onions, broad beans, peas and salad leaves are all easy to grow.

If you are not using a bought, multi-purpose, preferably peat-free, compost, don’t forget to investigate what kind of soil you have and if necessary, improve it or work with it by planting things that like those conditions.

When growing veg/soft fruits in the ground outdoors, pest control is something you’ll need to think about. Easiest is using horticultural fleece. This needs to be propped up so it doesn’t smother your produce as it grows and secured around the edges. You might want to try companion planting, which is a method of maintaining a natural balance by growing plants together that are mutually beneficial such as nasturtium to deter aphids from beans and alliums around carrots to ward off carrot root fly.

Above all, gardening and growing should be fun and there are some great ideas out there such as, grow bags that have windows in the front where you can watch your veg grow, mushroom straw log kits. Hydroponic towers that don’t use soil to grow salads or strawberries and so much more!

GARDENS | 59

etting their own transport often marks a rite of passage for children. As kids, there’s a feeling of freedom that accompanies being out on your bike with your friends, being allowed to visit a friend’s house on your scooter, or the day or stabilisers come off and we totter along till we’ve built up enough speed to get our balance. When we’re older, it’s riding on the road, that first driving lesson, or the strange mixture of euphoria and terror that comes with our first solo drive after we’ve passed our test.

Luckily, there are plenty of places to find expert help when it comes to buying a bike or scooter for your kids. Specialist retailers like Alpine Bikes, The Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative, Stonehaven’s Bike Remedy and Skyline in Cults are all able to supply quality bikes and safety kit. Sometimes, they also have second-hand bikes for sale. Gumtree and local Facebook marketplaces have a steady stream of pre-owed bikes that may just need a service and some TLC before being as good as new. Using a specialist means that you get a bike that’s well made and the right size for your child now and as they grow. They can also supply proper helmets and elbow pads for protection when the inevitable bumps and scrapes occur, as well as having some great ideas about where to go and organised events for the whole family.

The city and shire offers a variety of safe routes for kids on bikes and scooters. The Old Deeside Railway Line from Duthie Park to Cults offers flat terrain that’s in good condition. There are plenty of joggers and people walking their dogs, so encourage politeness by using a bell. There is a section of the Deeside Way, a track that takes you from the city to Ballater without cycling on the road if you’re fit and like a challenge.

Most parks have paved paths that are great places for toddlers to learn to ride their balance bikes and scooters. Aberdeen beach is also another good choice, given than older kids can cycle ahead for miles while still staying clear of traffic and little ones can stay close at hand. The prospect of a treat from one of the beach cafes or food trucks is always a bonus. Sticking on the coast, Transition Extreme offers an hour’s session in their indoor skate park for £7.50, which is great for budding BMX bikers. Inland, there are purpose-built bike parks at Tarland Trails and Aboyne Bike Park that offer terrain suitable for all levels of experience.

Mountain biking is another brilliant off-road option for kids who’ve mastered riding on two wheels. Banchory’s Scolty Hill offers rugged enduro rides, though there are plenty of options in many of the Forestry Commission’s woodlands, up in the Cairngorms and on National Trust Estates.

BEHIND THE BUSINESS

MEET SCOTT PATTERSON OF HAMISHMUNRO

Igrew up in the family businesses, Patterson’s of Aberdeen and Hamishmunro. From the age of five, I was the little helper at both shops, putting shoe boxes away, helping tidy up or being the ‘assistant’ for one of the staff selling shoes! If I wasn’t helping, I’d be sneaking the paper stuffing out of shoes and making a ball to kick around in the stock room. These days, I watch football rather than playing it, but I golf when I can and enjoy spending time with friends and family.

My parents, Susan and Steven opened Paterson’s of Aberdeen when I was three. When I was seven, the Munro family wanted to retire, my parents bought over Hamishmunro. Hamish and Shirley Munro had created a wonderfully loved business over two decades, known for its great products and stellar service. We’ve strived to uphold that standard ever since. When my father retired in 2017, we closed Patterson’s.

Hamishmunro has developed considerably over the last 24 years, originally being two separate men’s and ladies’ shoe shops, before refitting into a ladies shoe and fashion boutique fifteen years ago.

We added our online website/brand Something-For-Me in 2011 which has allowed us to expand our customer base. We have customers as far away as Peru and Mongolia but the Aberdeen store is still at our core and our family’s heart. When COVID hit and all retail businesses had no idea what would happen, I worked an unfathomable number of hours to ensure we had to best chance to get through it. We’ve thrived since the pandemic, thanks to our great staff and loyal customers.

It’s always been a family business. Even now, I talk to my parents about the business every day, Mum enjoys coming along on buying trips and my aunt is the store manager. Everyone from my granny to my sister and nieces has helped out at some time.

We spend a lot of time selecting the brands we stock. We try to offer high

quality products that are still great value for money. We have a mix of favourite brands that still offer something fresh each season and try to add some new brands each year.

I do a bit of everything and no two days are the same, whether its serving customers on the shop floor, sending parcels across the world, dealing with suppliers, managing the background business aspects or simply cleaning up, there’s always a job to be done and the variety is what I like most.

The biggest challenges for a business like ours are mainly Brexit-related. 95% of our goods are from European brands and Brexit was as big a challenge as COVID for us. No longer can we get goods within a few days, the majority of suppliers have scaled back in-season stock holding and we have seen customs/import costs skyrocket. As a business we haven’t seen a single benefit from Brexit. We’ve spent a huge amount to improve the store’s energy efficiency as power bills spiral and we’ve been fighting for improved parking options at lower costs for years but all recommendations have not been considered seriously by Local Council.

If I wasn’t working here, I think I’d still want to own my own business. I went to RGU and graduated with a management degree. While I don’t think I always expected to run a fashion boutique, I definitely wanted to be my own boss and challenge myself in the business world.
