Meet the team behind regenerative medicine in North-east

An all-female team is leading the way in enabling people across the North-east to truly thrive, following the successful launch of a luxury wellness and aesthetics clinic. From redefining ageing to exploring the fascinating world of regenerative medicine, experts in their field have come together thanks to Professor Rhoda MacKenzie – who moved and rebranded her Age Reversal Therapies clinic earlier this year. She has already built up a loyal following and launched the one-ofa-kind clinic in Sauchen to meet the demand for an exciting new era of longevity.

With access to specialists across women’s health plus personalised evidence-based plans, the team’s approach to preventive medicine is proving popular. “Our offering of bespoke and personalised medicine has seen a rush of new clients, both male and female in recent months,” said Professor MacKenzie. “The business has gone from strength to strength, and we have grown our team to reflect our empowered and expert service.” You can now book in with Independent Nurse Prescriber, Louise Mackintosh, who brings a wealth of experience having spent 18 years in aesthetics. She also provides Platelet Rich Plasma

(PRP) -this increasingly popular therapy can stimulate tissue rejuvenation, treat hair loss and accelerate healing. Microblading and semi-permanent makeup is also available from Louise.

Doctor Aileen Alexander is on board as a lifestyle, physician and longevity specialist. Patients can expect a deep dive into everything from metabolic health to inflammation, leaving with the right tools to super charge vitality. For those feeling lost in navigating the menopause, Doctor Sarah Hastings is an accredited menopause specialist. She covers a wide range of women’s health concerns, meaning patients feel truly empowered. Professor MacKenzie continues to offer comprehensive aesthetics, alongside private blood tests and skin lesion removal. “We’re passionate about helping people to take control of their health like never before,” she said. “It is a privilege to lead the way in regenerative medicine right here in Aberdeenshire.”

After more than 20 years working across the NHS, private practice and elite sport, I've seen first-hand the transformative benefits of movement-based rehabilitation. That's why I founded Reform Physio & Pilates in 2020 - creating a hub for specialist Pelvic Health Physiotherapy and launching the city's first dedicated physio-led Reformer Pilates studio.

Many of our physiotherapists have advanced pelvic health training, allowing us to offer a truly comprehensive service alongside our pre and postnatal Pilates programmes.”

What makes ReformPhysio & Pilates different is the integration of Physiotherapy and Reformer Pilates. Relocating with Children after Separation : What do the Courts consider?

Where one parent wishes to relocate with a child or children after separation and the other parent does not consent, the Court must determine the issue by considering whether to grant a specific issue order under section 11 of the Children (Scotland) Act 1995.

The approach in Scotland is clear. As with all Section 11 orders, when considering the issue of relocation, the following principles apply:

• The child’s welfare is paramount

• The court will only make an order if it is better for the child than making no order

• The child’s views must be considered where appropriate

Judges have wide discretion to decide based on their own assessment of the evidence. It is therefore vital that any proposal for relocation is well thought through, and the Court is furnished with sufficient evidence to allow them to conclude that the proposed relocation is in the child’s best interests.

A few key takeaways from recent case law: -

• No automatic priority is given to the primary carer.

• Courts are placing increasing weight on the child’s relationship with both parents and their wider family.

• Relocation proposals must be detailed and well-evidenced (housing, employment, schooling, access to medical facilities, availability of extra-curricular activities, maintaining contact with family left behind).

• Stability and continuity often carry significant weight.

• Child welfare concerns, such as risk to safety or health, can justify relocation despite reduced contact with the other parent.

• The child’s views must be taken but are not always followed.

If you are considering relocation with your child or responding to a request to relocate, early legal advice is crucial to enable you to plan properly to seek or defend a court order. Please contact one of our experienced family solicitors who will be happy to assist.

FALLS BY ORRY SHAND SET TO WOW DINERS

From his first foray into cooking at the tender age of 14, to launching his own restaurant in a stunning spot of Aberdeenshire –Orry Shand doesn’t do things by halves.

You may well have watched his rise to culinary glory as Scotland’s National Chef of Year, alongside his star appearance as a finalist on the Great British Menu. But fame is the last thing on Orry’s mind, and he is now set to welcome the first of eager diners at his very own restaurant. The father of two has launched a mouth-watering tasting menu following months of hard work at the former Falls of Feugh venue in Banchory. The well-known spot closed its doors at the end of 2025, and Orry has since transformed the site so as to reflect the ultimate fine dining experience. Complete with the backdrop of the dramatic falls which are home to migrating salmon, it makes for a one-off location in the heart of Royal Deeside. The grand re-opening will take place on July 15th with tables now available to reserve. Trend caught up with Orry as he prepares for perhaps the biggest moment in an already glittering career, and found out why Falls by Orry Shand is a dream finally realized for a humble lad from Ellon.

“My love of cooking started from an early age after watching TV chef, Gary Rhodes, get to work. I started cooking at the age of 14 in local restaurants before moving to Edinburgh to work at the then Michelin-starred ‘Number One’ at The Balmoral hotel. I then moved on to work at two Michelin star Restaurant Andrew Fairlie at The Gleneagles Hotel. Along the way I became the former Scottish chef of the year winner in 2019, National chef of the year in 2024 followed by Banquet winner on the 2026 Great British menu. I don’t think I’ve ever equated this to fame though; you can’t plan something like the Great British Menu. But if an opportunity like that comes along, it’s a no brainer. Being recognised for doing well at your craft can only ever be a positive.

I was on the lookout for more than a year when I visited Falls of Feugh; I knew this had to be the place for my first independent restaurant. I hope we’ve breathed new life into the spot following a major revamp, creating 10 hospitality jobs in the process. This is an intimate venue where diners can expect a multi course tasting menu, with a blend of Scottish ingredients, Nordic inspiration and classic French cooking techniques. It means so much to be rooted in the region, and it’s important to me to use local ingredients. Inspiration has of course come from the surroundings alongside the things I’ve learnt over the course of my career. Guests can expect to be looked after and immersed in experience led dining. We’re asking diners to put aside three hours as we present between 12-15 servings, using only the very best ingredients. The vision was a full and sustainable happy restaurant, after 22 years in the industry I can’t wait to see everything come to life.

Mrs Murray’s launches major redevelopment to support rescue dog of the future

One of Aberdeen’s oldest charities is asking North- east communities to help transform the lives of rescue dogs through a major new redevelopment project. Mrs Murray’s Home for Stray Dogs and Cats has officially launched The Big Build; a fundraising campaign to create 21 purpose-built kennel units, each with indoor sleeping areas and secure outdoor runs. The new designs will help reduce stress and anxiety for dogs who may already be frightened or traumatised when they arrive. The redevelopment will also include improved hygiene facilities, dedicated maternity space, and better environments for potential adopters to meet animals. The charity is now encouraging local people, businesses, and community groups to support the campaign and help secure the future of animal rescue services in the North- east for generations to come. More information and ways to donate can be found at mrsmurrays.co.uk

Hanging basket hacks

with Kirsty McLean

Choosing the perfect hanging basket begins with deciding the overall style and mood you want to achieve. For an organic vibe, consider materials like natural woven nest baskets, wicker, willow, rattan, or even Kokedama moss balls. These porous, earthy vessels work much like containers and depending on shape, may require a plastic liner to protect them from rotting - especially if you plan to keep your plants in place beyond a single summer display. Remember to pinch out a few drainage holes at the bottom. If you lean towards something more contemporary, explore stylish wall-mounted hanging planters or containers crafted from sleek materials.

When it comes to planting, the possibilities are endless. Annuals offer a vibrant kaleidoscope of colour from summer right through to early autumn, perfect if you want a riot of hues. But there are no rules—you might prefer a specific colour scheme, like pure ivory whites paired with silver-green foliage, or deep purples accented by lime green. For a more natural look, try adding airy grasses like Isolepis cernua as the upright central feature, surrounded by the delicate, Oneothera Lindheimeri ‘Whirling Butterflies,’ with trailing Erigeron karvinskianus and Lysimachia nummularia cascading over the edges.

The beauty of these Perennial plants is their versatility; when the season ends you can transfer them into planters or garden borders to come back the following growing season. You could also make them work a little harder and create a winter display by adding in pansies and cyclamen to keep your look fresh until spring.

Preparation is key to success. Most baskets benefit from a liner—sphagnum moss, wool moss, or a fitted coco-coir liner all work well. Soak the liner thoroughly, then fill with multipurpose container compost enriched with slow-release fertilizer and water- retaining granules or gel to keep moisture in. For moss liners, a trick is to place a circle of plastic (from the compost bag) at the bottom, black side down, to boost moisture retention.

Start by adding a few handfuls of compost to cover the roots of side-planted flowers. Introduce trailing and cascading plants through any holes in the basket or arrange them around the sides if there aren’t any. Position upright

from Pembrokeshire

Beloved by Jane Austen and home to award winning beaches, get ready for a simply stunning road trip this summer. We’re heading to pretty Pembrokeshire where you’ll find pastel seaside towns and coastal castles, alongside welcoming communities which have been shaped by the sea for centuries. From medieval conquerors to a place of pilgrimage, welcome to Pembrokeshire.

Pembrokeshire is home to Britain’s only coastal national park, with 186 miles of coastal path to explore. If you’re in search of adventure, might we suggest starting with a marvellous trip to Skomer Island. This breathtaking reserve is home to the largest colony of Manx shearwaters, with around 350,000 breeding pairs. You may spot a familiar sight peering out from clifftop burrows, as Skomer also welcomes Atlantic puffins each year. Whether you’re an avid twitcher or a complete novice, you will be wowed by the sheer amount of wildlife. Pack comfortable shoes in preparation to climb 87 steps from the landing jetty, having made the 15-minute boat ride from Martin’s Haven. Part of the beauty of Skomer is the fact that it is completely unspoilt, with visitor numbers limited each day. Book your tickets well in advance, and remember to take refreshments as there are no catering facilities – unless you fancy joining the seabirds in search of a fishy lunch!

Back on dry land and Pembrokeshire is home to many a picturesque harbour, such is the scene to be found in the quaint village of Solva. Nestled in Pembrokeshire

National Park, you can explore the Blue Flag beaches or head to the high street where you’ll find independent cafes, craft shops and galleries. The village is split into Upper Solva and Lower Solva, with multiple vantage points offering views to die for. Solva is also only a few miles away from St Davids, which is the UK’s smallest city. Fall in love with the 12th century cathedral and visit the birthplace of St David – St Non Chapel and Holy Well. Parking can be difficult at peak season as you might expect, take advantage of The Celtic Coaster. This seasonal shuttle bus does a handy loop of St Davids Peninsula, with stops including Whitesands beach.

A visit to Pembrokeshire wouldn’t be complete without stopping off at Tenby, famed for its pastel-coloured houses and dramatic sweeping sands. We recommend putting aside at least two days to explore, alongside a visit to Caldey island. You can pick up a boat from Tenby harbour or Castle Beach; Caldey is home to Cistercian monks and the crystal-clear waters of Priory beach.

Don’t forget to schedule in a visit to Barafundle Bay, which has been voted one of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. We promise the half mile walk is worth it, whilst Freshwater West also beckons. The latter is a popular surfing spot, and was used as the final resting place for Dobby in the Harry Potter series. Whether you’re in search of imposing castles, welcoming market towns or golden sands, Pembrokeshire is ready and waiting to welcome you.

andSwallowsAmazons summer

From demands for snacks to clamouring claims of boredom, summer with kids is not for the faint hearted. I’m on a mission to keep my sanity and house relatively intact, and that can only mean one thing. It’s time for a Swallows and Amazons summer. By that, I mean I’m relying on the bounty of the North-east and heading out for adventures. I’m scaling right back this summer holidays, led by nostalgic memories from my own childhood where a picnic in the woods followed by pond dipping was considered a top tier day out. If I can keep my delightful offspring off screens and even have fun in the process, well that’s good enough for me.

HEAD TO HUNTLY

My eldest has been pestering to try tubing for at least six months. I confess I had no idea what tubing actually was; it involves riding on an inner tube down a dry ski slope. Perfect for that sought after adrenalin rush and a wee bit unusual, it’s on offer both at Huntly Nordic and Outdoor Centre alongside Alford Ski Centre. The sessions are run by Live Life Aberdeenshire and relatively cheap to book. See you on the slopes!

GRANITE ADVENTURES

Did you know there is a loch just outside Aberdeen, where you can have a paddle sports taster session? You can try out canoeing, kayaking or paddleboarding under the watchful eye of coaches. The minimum age is four, but the toddler was happy enough to play

on the shore with grandparents for back up. My eldest loved splashing around in the loch and the water trampoline was a huge hit. Kids holiday camps are also available; you can find out more at graniteadventures.co.uk

We have an abundance of fantastic bike trails here in the North-east, but I have it on good authority that pump tracks are the next big thing. My eight-year-old loves taking his bike to our local pump park where there’s a fantastic track complete with ramps. Transition Extreme is the go-to with a great beginner’s track, my little one loves practising on his balance bike whilst big brother enjoys tearing along the more advanced route. You can get a day pass for around £13, before heading for ice cream at the beach.

Haughton Country Park out at Alford also boasts a great track alongside an all-ability trail.

RANGERS AT YOUR SERVICE

Both Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Council have a fantastic Rangers Service. My eldest still talks about rock pooling at Cove, where we found some incredible creatures under the guidance of an expert ranger. Bat walks, pond dipping, beach combing and mini beast hunts are all on offer this summer. I’ve always found the sessions fun and informative; our favourite to date has been the live bird ringing session as part of conservation efforts at Aden Park. Historic AberdeensHire Home to Host Art exHibition

It is a glorious sunny morning at Leask House in Aberdeenshire, where the lazy haze of summer has already settled across the surrounding fields. Light streams through the tall casement windows, where a group of artists are hard at work painting, sketching and creating. With a brush stroke of oil paint and the careful blending of pastels, it’s not difficult to see why inspiration might strike in such a stunning setting. But for the dedicated members of Leask House Artists, it is the company which they find to be so wonderfully uplifting. Come every Wednesday, they meet at Leask House just outside of Ellon – where the relatively solo profession of an artist is put to one side in favour of coming together as a creative group.

The artists showcase many skills ranging from painting to pottery, glass to jewellery and woodwork to furniture. For Hilary Gauci, it is a chance to be amongst people who share the same passions, the same drive to produce something completely unique. An acclaimed contemporary Scottish artist in her own right, Hilary is hopeful that the work produced could attract and inspire the next generation. For Leask House Artists are now working towards their next upcoming exhibition, which will be held on site come September. Members of the public are invited to view work on display in a dedicated gallery space, with the opportunity to meet the artists and find out more about the story behind each piece.

The event is located in the recently restored wing of Leask House, which was built by Archibald Simpson in 1826. It rose from the ashes following a fire in 1927, when Hilary and her family took on the remarkable rebuild more than half a century later. “We raised a young family here and have many fond memories over the years” said Hilary, whose still life paintings feature in galleries across the UK. “This is an opportunity for us to welcome the public, who we hope will enjoy a drive out into the countryside for a varied exhibition. The visitors book will be back this year. We enjoy reading the comments and seeing Leask House through the eyes of others. The gallery at Leask House provides a lovely setting for an art exhibition with a difference.” Previous events have attracted a loyal following, and Hilary is keen to introduce visitors to

new and emerging artists.

Leask House Artists has around 15 members who work across a variety of mediums, including ceramics, glass, painting and jewellery. “As a group we have found our skillsets to be something we can become immersed in for a while,” said Hilary. The gallery is only open twice a year in May and September, and brings together the work of the group as well as art from a selection of invited artists. This is an opportunity to acquire a unique piece of art from a curated collection, in a historic setting.”

The exhibition will take place from September the 12th to the 20th. It will be open from 11am to 4.30pm excluding Wednesday. To find out more, visit Leask House Artists on Facebook and Instagram at LeaskHouseArtists.

Six figure investment marks landmark 40th anniversary at Deeside retirement village

North-east charity calls for more volunteers to support mums

AARoyal Deeside retirement village has unveiled £100,000 of investments in services and facilities as part of its landmark 40th anniversary celebrations. Inchmarlo House Care Home and Retirement Village has benefited from improvements to a variety of services and facilities, as it prepares to celebrate four decades of dedicated service. Improvements include a coffee lounge for residents and visitors, alongside a dog run and general upgrades to the grounds. News of the investment follows a recent celebration of long-serving staff, with 21 members of the team clocking up a combined total of more than 350 years. Director & general manager, Julie Mackenzie said: “This significant investment is about more than enhancing services and facilities –it’s about strengthening the community that has built up over the past 40 years.”

charity which started out as a mums meet up is now calling for more volunteers, following the role out of vital support groups which help new mums to feel less alone. LATNEM provides mental health peer support across the North-east and towards Elgin, with groups available both in person and online. The sessions are led by mums with lived experience of poor mental health, set in a safe and judgement

free environment. Numerous resources are available, including wellbeing activities and even special packs for mums staying in inpatient units. The charity supports thousands of mums every year, and is now calling on volunteers with lived experience to come forward. The ideal person will have around eight hours spare each month, and will offer kindness and insight for mums in need. If you think you can help, email Gill@Latnem.org

SAMH launch walk-in mental health hub in Aberdeen Charity Focus

Aleading mental health charity is offering walk-in support to people across the North-east, following the opening of a transformational hub in Aberdeen. SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health) is creating a national network of mental health and wellbeing support hubs, known as The Nook. Aberdeen is the second city to benefit. The first Nook opened in Glasgow last October and supported more than 3,000 visitors in just six months. SAMH hopes to launch Nooks in more communities in the coming years. The Nook has already started welcoming people from its base at Marischal Square, with a focus on a friendly and colourful environment instead of a clinical setting. An expert team is on hand for anyone in need of support, without the need for an appointment, referral or waiting list. The charity also operates more than 70 services in communities across the country, from mental health outreach to peer support.

Hazel McIlwraith is director of fundraising and major appeal at SAMH, and hopes The Nook will make a real difference for those in need. “The Nook offers stigma-free support in a cosy, non-clinical environment, seven days a week,” she said. “Set in a colourful, cosy and open-plan space, The Nook is designed to feel like home.” The design includes a homely kitchen table instead of a reception desk, with confidential chats available in snugs and family rooms instead of consultation booths.

“It doesn’t matter where you live or what you’d like to talk about,” said Hazel. “Anyone is welcome through the door to chat with our friendly, qualified team, or to sit and relax with a cuppa if they aren’t quite ready to chat just yet.” To find out more about The Nook and other services provided by SAMH, head to samh.org.uk or follow samhscotland on Instagram for more updates.

Jessica Carle on why becoming a mum has put a fire in her belly

Jessica Carle launched Solasta Skin seven years ago, and the popular brand quickly gained nationwide media attention. Alongside running wellness events, Jessica has recently launched a luxury swimwear brand fittingly called Solasta Swim - with a leading focus on sustainability. Having partnered with CleanHub, she’s determined to help prevent plastic entering the ocean whilst proving that slow fashion can in fact, be sexy.

Before I had my son who has just turned two, my own wellness practice looked very different. From the beginning though, I deliberately created multipurpose products. The body scrubs are two in one exfoliants and moisturisers, the beauty oils can be used four different ways and the face oil works morning and night. Now that I’m a mother, I’ve become exactly the woman I created the brand for. Motherhood has definitely made me think about mothers far more in everything I create. It has also fired me up; I want to show my son that if you work hard,

take risks, and your intentions are pure, it can pay off. I want him to experience a planet that’s been cared for, to swim in clean waters and minimise his exposure to toxic materials. It’s a huge part of why both of my brands are built the way they are. Mothers are always checking in on everyone else, making sure everyone else is okay. I always encourage my customers who are mums to sit and ask themselves, when did you last check in with you? I love so much of motherhood, every new experience feels precious. The lack of sleep at the beginning was a huge shock though. Everyone says sleep when the baby sleeps, but when you run your own business that’s almost impossible. There’s a perception that you can’t chase your dreams and have a family. That’s something I want to challenge. I love building these brands, I’m so passionate about them and I love being a mum. I know this season isn’t forever and I won’t get this time back, so on the days when there hasn’t been much time for me, I remind myself of that.

WITH MEGAN WISELY

From stunning family homes in Aberdeenshire to sleek apartments in the city, Megan Wisely is passionate about creating beautiful yet functional spaces for home owners across Scotland. It’s a fine balance between sumptuous colour palettes and clever designs which stand the test of time. From childhood inspiration to going into business with her mum at her side, we found out why Megan believes there really is no place like home.

“I’ve always had an interest in design, particularly fashion and interiors, but I’d say my love for interiors came from my Mum. Growing up, there were always home and interior magazines around the house, and I spent plenty of time with her visiting furniture stores, art exhibitions and interior shops. Looking back, those experiences played a huge role in shaping my passion for design. Over the years my mum worked at Laura Ashley and Annie Mo’s, attending trade shows as well as working for local interior design companies. We started Megan Wisely Interiors together, having that exposure from an early age gave me a valuable insight into the industry.

Alongside the team I now work on projects throughout Scotland and regularly travel to meet clients and oversee installations. While every location has its own character, most of our inspiration comes from understanding our clients’ needs and creating a design that reflects their lifestyle. We focus on creating timeless spaces that feel personal to them, rather than following

short-term trends. We pride ourselves on delivering a truly personalised and bespoke service, so getting to know our clients is one of the most enjoyable parts of the job. One of my favourite moments is presenting a design scheme and seeing their reaction when they can visualise how the finished space will look.

No two days are ever the same; my day usually starts by catching up on emails before heading into the studio for a quick team catch-up over coffee. It may come as a surprise but not every day is spent looking at fabrics and furniture samples. A large part of the role involves managing projects and coordinating everything behind the scenes to bring a design to life. Our very first project will always have a place in my heart. We were given the opportunity to work on a large five-bedroom family home in Aberdeenshire. It included a cinema room, sauna and steam room. To complete a full turnkey project so early on in our business journey; it was one of our proudest and most satisfying achievements. Our project with a Lamborghini garage gave us the opportunity to work on something completely different, it was a unique and exciting challenge that pushed our creativity in a new direction.

I’ve recently purchased an older property, so I’m looking forward to starting work on it later this year. It has high ceilings and beautiful original cornicing. I already have lots of ideas although, like many interior designers, my own home may end up being an ongoing project while we focus on delivering our clients’ homes first!
