In theory, this is the best time of year for sunny days and warmer weather, so it’s time to make the most of the incredible natural beauty all around us. Perhaps a trip to one of our underrated beaches or the mountains is in order, or maybe just a barefoot stroll along a riverbank? That said, we’ve had hailstorms and the office got a wee bit damp in a flash flood the other week, so we make no guarantees. Even if it’s a miserable day, there’s still so many reasons to get out and about and rediscover where we live. It’s sometimes easy to overlook everything we have within easy reach of the city. Don’t miss North-east Open Studios for the opportunity to meet the region’s artists and makers, or meet up with some friends for a meal, a concert, a gig or go dancing or treat yourself to a shopping trip. Step outside. Do something you’ve never done before. Got to the opera, play golf. There’s a whole world waiting for you. Who cares if you get a tiny bit damp! As for our events keep an eye out for the Love Fashion event details on our website and also the Trend Weddings Exhibition which is coming up in October!

As the nights draw in and the temperature drops over the next few months, indoor exercise is more appealing. Trend’s fitness guru Rob Currie, advises on what to consider before signing up at a gym... If you are brand new to a gym, book a session with a Personal Trainer. Most gyms offer a PT health assessment and it’s the best way to plan your training and explore the equipment. Gyms offer more variety than running outdoors. Resistance training is a great way to change

your body shape and boost your metabolism, group classes are sociable and you’ll often find you work harder indoors. Before choosing a gym, check out the length of contract and how to cancel your membership. Compare the costs and consider opening hours, facilities and classes on offer, location, staff qualifications and parking facilities. There’s no point joining a gym that doesn’t fit your lifestyle.

Pilates is renowned for helping to strengthen core muscles, promoting a long and lean physique and improving flexibility. At Mannofield’s Wallace Practice, Pilates classes are run by qualified physiotherapists and are perfect for anyone carrying a niggling injury or weakness. For a form of exercise that involves small movements and quite a lot of lying down, Pilates is surprisingly tiring. You don’t need to be remotely fit to get started and the classes are friendly and non-competitive, so it’s fine if you undertake the exercises with all the grace of an arthritic hippo attempting to climb a tree.

Classes resume - for beginners, intermediate and advanced students - from August 24th. New members are required to take a thorough assessment with a physiotherapist before joining a class.

ALL THE LOCAL NEWS SNIPPETS FROM AROUND THE NORTH-EAST

NEW ERA ON THE HORIZON FOR WEST END INSTITUTION Plans for the redevelopment of one of Aberdeen’s best known bars have been officially unveiled. The new owners of No.10, based at 10 Queens Terrace, have formally revealed their expansion plans, which will see the historic granite building undergo a major six-figure refurbishment. The renovations which are expected to be completed by September, will incorporate the recently acquired adjacent basement building, No 9, which is currently used as an office space, to create a new stylish 90-seater restaurant with private dining facilities. Owners have also confirmed that the venue will be named No.10

Bar & Restaurant, and will offer relaxed casual dining in the bar area and a more formal brasserie-style menu to be served in the restaurant. The interiors of the restaurant will be modern but in keeping with the 29-year old history of the venue, with traditional herringbone flooring, dark wood furnishings, leather-clad booths and a glass-fronted private dining room for up to 14 people. The existing site will remain open until August, serving breakfast, lunch and evening meals, whilst refurbishment continues in No.9. The new restaurant and bar is expected to be ready to open to the public by end of September.

THE SPARK: Celebrating 50 years of relationship counselling The Spark may be a new name, but this amazing charity has been helping people all over Scotland to improve their family and partnership relationships for fifty years, as Emma Cameron, Services Development Manager, explains... ‘Our relationship counselling service started in 1965 in church premises in Edinburgh, most recently being known as Scottish Marriage Care. However, since our services aren’t just for married couples, but also encompass working with families and step-families, teens and couples, we re-branded as The Spark in 2014. We have a centre in Aberdeen’s Huntly Street and others across the country. ‘All our counsellors are trained to university accredited standard in relationship counselling. As well as counselling for couples and individuals, we have a Relationship Helpline for those over sixteen, family counselling, a marriage preparation service and also offer support for step-families, children and young people. ‘Our counsellors are non-judgemental, helping people to improve their personal relationships. This also has a positive impact on the family, work and the wider community

leading to reductions in stress, improved health, improved awareness of other people’s needs and a more stable family life. ‘Anyone interested in training as a Relationship Counsellor should contact training@thespark.org.uk as we now offer an MSc Conversion programme. So it’s time for the beach, and this year’s summer hasn’t given us much practice so far - what to pack? Dual purpose pieces are a bonus on holiday, giving us less to carry and increasing the outfit options. Pretty sandals instead of flip flops will take an outfit into the evening, and a well-chosen cover-up moves from shower to poolside. If the key pieces are simple, then accessories must be celebratory and glamourous, think metallics trimmed with animal print, layered bangles and necklaces, fringes and beading. Good sunglasses are a necessity on holiday, so it’s important to get a pair that make you feel and look amazing, as well as helping you to read by the pool. Bird and flower motifs bring a summery feel to holiday pieces, and if you’re a fan of neon then the beach is the place to flash your eye-popping brights! A floppy sunhat is another

failsafe, dressed up with a sexy scarf, and if you can find one that squashes flat, you don’t have to worry about wearing it back to the windswept airport. The key to looking glam and feeling great at the beach is to choose fabrics and styles that ooze sophistication, whilst feeling cool and comfortable. Choose pieces in much lighter fabrics and daring patterns than you would go for at home, chances are you won’t know anyone, so why not give glam a whirl? And if you buy nothing else new, treat yourself to a beach bag with bling, you can keep your summer fabulousness in it back at the ranch as well, ready to take on next year’s rays.

The importance of having jewellery professionally cleaned and checked cannot be understated. Rings are particularly important because they tend to get the hardest wear, more so if they are worn every day.

www.sariaahmed.blogspot.co.uk @sariaahmedmua

Diamonds and coloured gemstones in need of cleaning lose their lustre and vibrancy as they come into contact with every day substances ranging from hand cream and soaps to oils and paints. Add to these the type of abrasive materials which will satinise the metals holding the stones, and a treasured possession can lose more of its shine. Other jewellery items do not suffer the same wear that rings do, but a less frequent clean and check on these too will ensure a long term pristine condition. We consider the ‘checking’ part of the service to be proactive to help reduce the risk of losing stones from settings

and identifying any other potential weaknesses of an individual piece. We cannot guarantee a problem will never arise, but many potential issues have been identified and corrected to avoid customers experiencing the disappointment of losing a stone from a ring. We are pleased to offer the cleaning and checking service free of charge on engagement rings bought from Finnies the Jewellers, for all other items there is a nominal charge. In the majority of cases, customers are thrilled when they receive their jewellery pieces back looking like new. This is just one of the beauties of fine jewellery and it is very satisfying for us to see the pure joy of the owner of a beloved ring putting it on a finger, looking as fabulous as the day it was purchased. www.finniesjewellers.co.uk 33

CELL PROTECTOR SPF50+ PA+++ - we are getting better as a nation at applying sun cream when the sun is in the sky, but how do we spot and deal with other dangerous factors, such as environmental stress and pollution? IOMA once again race to the rescue with their IOMA AMOI mobile app, yet another clever piece of kit which uses gelocators to determine the UV index where you are for the next 48 hours, so you know when to reapply or cover up. The IOMA product of choice for UV protection is their Cell Protector SPF50+ PA+++ , which uses a powerful combination of mineral screens and biotechnological sun filters to offer the highest possible levels of protection.

COLLAGEN RENEW encapsulates the future of anti-wrinkle treatments - in a pill. After 10 years of research and development, IOMA have perfected a collagen pill which renews the skin’s elasticity from the inside out.

MA CRÈME - literally named ‘My Cream’, this truly is a wonder product. IOMA have developed technology which is capable of distilling all the information contained in your particular skin and using the resulting ‘Skin Code’ to work out which of 40,257 possible recipes is just right for your very own bespoke face cream. There is a night cream, a day cream and vials of serum, all tailored specifically, not just to your skin type, but to your actual skin. And, after four weeks of use, they analyse the results and adjust the formula to keep on improving your skin health - imagine, instead of selecting a product because 27 out of 30 women in a magazine survey thought it was good; you are choosing a product that has been ‘tested’ on you!

TREND would like to offer two lucky readers the chance to win their very own Ma Crème, just go to www.trendmagazine.co.uk and answer the following question:

HOW MANY RECIPES FOR MA CRÈME ARE THERE?

Fifi’s Café Bistro on Rosemount Place has just become the city’s first gluten free café. While this is a huge boon for those with coeliac disease or IBS, it’s also great news for everyone who would like their food to be a wee bit healthier, while still being a delicious treat. ‘I know from personal experience that removing gluten, which is an inflammatory ingredient, from my own family’s diet has led to a dramatic improvement in their health and I wanted to share that with my customers’, owner Fiona Kozak explained. After a considerable amount of research, ingredients testing and sampling, owner Fiona Kozak with her friend and local holistic chiropractor Dr Eline Pedersen have put together a menu that not only tastes good, but is also good for you. Fifi’s fresh juice blends make a perfect start to the day, packed with vitamins, fruit and vegetables. There’s an all-day breakfast menu, ranging from the traditional fry up to porridge, pancakes and eggs Florentine - but all gluten free.

If you think gluten free means waving goodbye to sandwiches and toasties, you’d be wrong, as Fiona has created an imaginative selection. The fillings are more creative than many cafés - the smoked Applewood cheese with spiced apple jelly is lovely. All the ingredients are locally sourced and of excellent quality. The omelettes use free range eggs and the salads are well balanced. Even the ice cream and fabulous cakes, scones and tray bakes are all gluten free. As a mum of four, Fiona has made Fifi’s very family friendly, with the children’s menu featuring funky shaped sandwiches, toasties and Heinz Tomato Soup. Fifi’s is a relaxed, friendly place. In the evenings, an informal bistro style takes over, with booking advisable.

August and September offer up some amazing seasonal produce, so make the most of it. Most salad ingredients are at their best now, whether raw, griddled or grated. Try combining leaves with berries, nuts, cheeses or smoked fish for a flavoursome light meal.

Try something new - harvest elderflowers and make a syrup for summer fruits or add a little to a chilled sparkling wine or gin and tonic. Forage in the woods for wild mushrooms. Chanterelles are easy to identify and delicious fried in farmhouse butter. Preserve the flavours of summer by making your own jams, relishes, pickles and chutneys. It’s simple and very rewarding - especially since you can sterilise jars in the dishwasher. Let the soul of the season inspire you to try new combinations and make the most of fresh ingredients for a healthier alternative. Yum!

The Tippling House

The quaint Tippling House on Belmont Street has been the Aberdeen cocktail connoisseur’s staple cocktail bar and restaurant since it opened in 2012, so much so that

I eventually settled on the slow cooked beef shin & blue cheese croquettes as a starter, which arrived in all its gooey glory with some spicy mustard dip, while

it has lifted the Life With Style Award’s ‘Best Bar’ award for the past two years running.

my companion praised the sweetcorn & bulgar wheat fritters while wolfing them down.

Never one to turn down a cocktail or two, or an excuse to eat out, my companion and I were soon cosied up in a booth overlooking the bar, where we could watch the mixologist preparing our selections from the tempting and impressively extensive - cocktail menu.

For our main courses I opted for the harissa-spiced lamb shank served with polenta mash, vegetables and crispy lamb sweetbreads drenched in a delicious Cardamon & sweet paprika braising liquor. The meat of the shank slid off the bone beautifully and was full of flavour. The Roast Crown of Pigeon was also enjoyed at the other side of the table and drew a few envious glances from other diners and sometimes from me.

My Peruvian Sucker Punch was a sour, but delicious blend of pisco, fresh lemon, triple sec, sirop de punch and of course a shot of Vitamin C Effervescence... to boost those immune levels. Practically a health food! The menu at The Tippling House is one of those where you can dither and deliberate for a while, because you’ll find it difficult to settle on your favourite.

The Tippling House provides an excellence service and a relaxing sanctuary in the city centre street - it’s no wonder that this well-known bar is still seen as a special secret shared by its fans.

Chef Focus Meet Ross Cochrane, head chef at The Courtyard and a man with a passion for fine food, great ingredients and Scooby Snacks…

TELL US HOW YOU CAME TO BE A CHEF... When I left school, I worked in construction but I could never foresee a career in it, so I got a commis chef job and got hooked.

The Courtyard’s Ross Cochrane

DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE OF COOKING... I love Italian food and culture, so I try and blend my Scottish/ classic roots with Italian flavours and a modern touch.

WHAT’S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE WHEN IT COMES TO FOOD? Oh dear. In the kitchen, we have something called a Scooby Snack. It consists of a least six ingredients from crisps to yesterday’s ragu all jammed in a toasted ciabatta!

WHAT ARE THE MAIN INFLUENCES ON YOUR COOKING? After working for 14 months and going to college I met and worked with a chef called Reuben Gauld. He took me under his wing and was a huge inspiration for my career. Now I look at chefs like Daniel Watkins and Sat Bains, but I really admire Marco Pierre White. He’s incredible.

INGREDIENTS PER PERSON > 6-8 oz fillet of bream, trimmed and scored. You can ask your fishmonger to do this for you. > 100ml beetroot juice > 100g risotto rice and 20g butter > Handful of nice chanterelles, cleaned. Any wild mushrooms will do if you can’t find chanterelles. > 20g goat’s cheese > Tablespoon of truffle oil > 10g mixed micro herbs

ROSS’S PAN SEARED BREAM, BEETROOT RISOTTO, SCOTTISH CHANTERELLES, GOATS CHEESE & TRUFFLE OIL, SUMMER SALAD METHOD Make your risotto according to your preference, adding the beetroot juice and butter and stirring to mix. Once cooked, leave to the side. Season the fish. Put some butter or oil in a frying pan and sear the fish skin side down until crisp and the flesh is 70% cooked. Turn the fish and add a knob of butter and squeeze of lemon juice then remove it from the pan.

Add the mushrooms to the pan, sauté for a couple of minutes, season well and add truffle oil. Plate the risotto, crumble the goat’s cheese over the top, add the fish and garnish with the microherbs, scatter the mushrooms on the side. Enjoy with a crisp white wine and some crusty bread that has been warmed in the oven.

A growing family is an absolute joy but accommodation that has happily housed a couple can quickly become crowded when new family members and grandchildren arrive. Parents-of-four Susan and David Taylor were delighted to welcome back grown-up kids and their extended family but faced a space dilemma when everyone got together to socialise.

the Taylors ultimately opted for a large light-filled extension into the garden incorporating the space occupied by their original long, narrow kitchen, utility room and conservatory.

Reluctant to move from the home they love at Elrick in Aberdeenshire, they found the solution in Bon Accord Glass, a company they already knew and trusted since contracting them to install a conservatory ten years ago.

And one great bonus when they came to source a new kitchen to enhance the extra living space, was that Bon Accord now has

‘We were so impressed with their work then that we decided to see what they could do,’ explained Susan, ‘and we didn’t even consider anyone else.’ Bon Accord came up with a number of ideas and

a dedicated kitchen showroom with a fabulous range of Beeck kitchens. Susan and David chose sleek white high-gloss, handleless units with a Silestone quartz worktop, a huge island with induction hob, pop-up extractor fan and large wooden bistro table and matching stools. They especially love their stunning bright blue splashback behind the sink unit. The project, which included a new front door, took just over three months to complete and, thanks to Bon Accord’s team of experts, the work was seamless. ‘We didn’t have to chase anyone up, we got weekly bulletins about what was happening next and any changes or adaptations were accommodated, no problem,’ said Susan. ‘The quality is so good and the staff so approachable and friendly, they went out of their way to be helpful.

re roses old fashioned? I guess those of us who are old enough to remember the sight of bush roses surrounded by bedding plants being almost obligatory in the garden might think

The most successful roses are likely to be bare-root, available November-March and best planted late Autumn but there are containerised roses available all year round - these are still best planted in late Autumn. Don’t plant new roses where old roses have

so, but there is so much more to these beautiful and often heavenly scented plants.

been unless you dig out and replace with new soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the plants roots and the depth of a spade’s blade. Mix in well-rotted organic matter and a general fertiliser. Position the rose at the centre of the hole and backfill gently making sure that the graft union (where the branches originate at the bottom of the main stem) is at soil level when planted and add a mulch on top. Feed during the growing season and douse with seaweed extract to keep the plant healthy. Long-flowering and often repeat-flowering, some of these wonderful varieties can bloom into Autumn.

Personally, I have a love of climbing and rambling roses and these days you can even buy thornless climbing roses, if that’s what’s putting you off planting them in the garden. I love planting in three dimensions to create vertical interest and height in the border, or creating a canopy of colour and scent under which to meander along a path. Pergolas, arches, trellis, obelisks and arbours can all be used to support these elegant stems and blooms Using repeat obelisks in a border to support roses creates form, and a well-positioned arch covered in roses creates a sense of entrance. Trellis adorned with roses may provide a decorative screen, a series of single pergola enhanced with roses provides a sense of travel, and an arbour hanging with roses can provide a destination and focal point in the garden. Many garden centres are well-stocked, providing helpful descriptions to guide you.

Some of my favourites: Zephirine Drouhin (tolerates a little shade) and James Galway (thornless climbing roses with an old rose scent), Albertine (rambler with a strong fragrance), New Dawn (medium climber with good scent), Iceberg (medium climber/ rambler), Danse de Feu (climber/rambler - short with light scent), Golden Showers for light shade... the list goes on!

Is this Your Time to Study? L-R: Duncan Skinner Chairman at Glencraft & Graham McWilliam, general manager at Glencraft

There is now another option open to young people who do not want to leave school and/or home to study full time at university, especially if they have the opportunity of a job with development prospects. Robert Gordon University’s (RGU) Aberdeen Business School has several young students, sponsored by their employers, on a part-time degree course whilst working in a variety of businesses. RGU’s innovative Business Management course is delivered via a blend of face-to-face workshops and on-line distance activities. Students with no previous academic history can now achieve a BA degree, some in just a year, so for those who choose to go straight into employment it means they can still obtain a degree in the future when the time is right for them.

WORDS BY ALISON DANIELS | TRAVEL

Anyone who’s ever experienced the joys of an early morning commuter train, or a football special full of disconsolate supporters crying into their beer, could easily be forgiven for assuming that a rail holiday is only for the most miserable of masochists. Choose the right trip and rail travel offers a relaxing alternative to flying, with the advantage of a slower pace, more legroom and the chance to take in the landscape as you cover the miles. Here’s our pick of the most luxurious train journeys… FOR ROMANCE With the right person, anywhere can be romantic. That said, a Venetian palazzo has the edge over a Blackpool B&B when it comes to stimulating your affections. Pull out all the stops aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express! Join the iconic train in Paris, then experience fine dining, 1920s style carriages and luxurious but compact sleeping quarters as you travel to Venice. Spend two days exploring the canals and getting lost in the back streets of this most romantic of cities before travelling first class to Rome for a couple of days. Head south towards Naples and to the Amalfi coast, spending four days perhaps visiting Capri or Pompeii before flying home. It’s a trip that’s ideal for special anniversaries, costing from £3949 per person. FOR SCENIC SPLENDOUR Canada’s Rocky Mountaineer takes you through some

of the most awe-inspiring scenery on the planet, as you travel across this vast landscape. It’s a three day journey where you stay in hotels, as the Rocky Mountaineer doesn’t have sleeping berths aboard. Explore Vancouver before boarding the train. Head east past the rushing waters of Hell’s Gate and the glacial Thompson River to Kamloops. After an overnight stop, the train continues on to Banff, to spectacular views of mountains, lakes and maybe the odd moose or bear. Expect to pay around £1200 for the trip, not including flights or extending your stay in Vancouver or Banff. FOR FAMILIES Interrailing has changed for the better since it was all backpacking students carrying three months’ worth of dirty laundry. With kids and teenagers, plan a route that involves plenty of day tours and diversions, travelling mainly at night in sleeper berths. Fly to Paris, before heading to EuroDisney for a day or two, before exploring medieval towns in the Loire or the culinary delights of the south of France. Side trips to Germany, Belgium or through the Pyrenees into Spain have their appeal.

You can buy Interrail passes for 28 countries, stretching from Finland to Turkey, or a global pass covering all 28, but not the UK. Global passes start at £149, with country passes ranging from £32 to £120 depending on duration. A first class global pass for two adults and up to four children allowing 15 days travelling in a 22 day period costs £916. Children over 11 need a Youth Pass. Getting the whole family involved in planning your trip makes it more fun. Once you’ve pored over the timetables, using a specialist like www.railbookers. com can simplify the process. FOR ADVENTURE IN STYLE The Trans-Siberian Express used to be about hard seats and hard to digest Soviet style snacks, but now there’s a luxurious way to tackle this most iconic of train journeys. For luxury even an oligarch would envy, a mere £21,195 per person buys a fifteen day trip from Moscow to Vladivostok in the train’s Imperial Suite. The voyage allows plenty of time to explore the 10,000 kilometre route. Start with a tour of Moscow, before heading east through historic Kazan, Novosibirsk, Irkutsk, Lake Baikal, and Ulan Bator.

All aboard!

hether you’re planning your wedding, a corporate event or a family gathering, finding the right venue makes all the difference. Elsick House is tucked away just a few miles south of the city near Cammachmore. Elsick may have been open for only a few months, but it is already establishing an outstanding reputation as one of the North-east’s star venues. It may be the combination of seventeen acres of tranquil gardens, lakeside walks, or the stunning grounds that make Elsick House the perfect setting for a special event. It might be the white walled grandeur of Elsick’s baronial exterior, or the grand country house interiors that make you feel a world away from the mundanities and minor hassles of everyday living, but Elsick will definitely make you and your event truly special. For weddings and parties, Elsick House can be hired on an exclusive self-catering or fully-staffed basis for a three day weekend, allowing the celebration to be shared in a relaxed fashion with friends and family. It’s like having your own version of Downton Abbey. Although the house has a long and distinguished history, it is almost unknown. It has been in the same family since 1367, most recently being used as a secluded private retreat for the Duke of Fife and his family. Many of the trees in the grounds bear planting plaques, bearing witness to Elsick’s popularity with royal guests over the decades, all appreciative of the aura of refined calm that the house and grounds afford. Parts of the building date back to the 13th century, but the main part of the house is a glorious example of the Scottish Baronial style, with its stepped gables, solid architecture and cosy interiors. Over the centuries, Elsick House has evolved from an aristocratic place of power to one of calm refinement and country living.

It is now available to hire for weddings, corporate and private events. Elsick House only ever plays host to one event at a time, guaranteeing exclusive use and the full attention of the expert events team, all dedicated to ensuring your event is one that will be remembered for all the right reasons. The house itself has ten bedrooms and nine bathrooms, each designed in a characterful country house mix of antique furniture and modern necessities. There are three large public rooms, with the intimate dining room perfect for smaller weddings or select corporate away days. Catering can be supplied by the award-winning Hudsons, working to your specifications. The drawing room can also be configured to seat 35, or 50 standing, making it idea for cocktail receptions or presentations. The double doors between the drawing room and the dining room make a flexible option for larger events. As you’d expect with such a great venue, the events staff at Elsick House are very focused on customer service, making everyone who comes to Elsick feel special and part of the family. They are happy to help you arrange a game of croquet, archery or water zorbing, or a Segway tour as part of your event. There’s even a revolving summer house on the lawn that’s perfect for a drinks reception. wooden furniture, tiny knitted teddies, abstract glass forms in blues and greens, corsage brooches, tartan gifts, tweed iPad covers, cushions, marquetry, sweet seaside pictures, cards, hand-made heirloom hobby horses in wood and cute little hanging houses. You’re bound to find something you love.

The Wee Boorachie is a charming craft and gift shop, which also houses owner Mairi Bradford’s knitting studio, tucked away in a corner by the old waterwheel which powered the former sawmill. Naturally, the shop features some of Mairi’s own designs, but she also carries an imaginative and original selection of handmade gifts and crafts all of which are designed and made in the UK with many being unique to the store. The Wee Boorachie stocks many products from Scottish makers. You’ll find an entire cabinet of silver jewellery from the renowned Malcolm Appleby, as well as lovely pieces from local

Round the corner, you’ll find the Milton Art Gallery, taking centre stage in the courtyard development. The gallery has been on the go for almost twenty years, and is known for promoting gifted artists from across Scotland, with plenty of space dedicated to local artists, sculptors, ceramicists, glass workers and jewellers. The selection on show is always diverse, with new exhibitions every two or three months, so there’s always something to catch the eye. There’s a mixed summer show until late August, followed by Animal Magic, featuring work by leading wildlife artists, and Silvia Knowlson will be running workshops on wire animal sculptures as part of NEOS. The gallery is one of the most welcoming spaces, with a relaxed informal air. As well as work by well-known artists such as Francis Boag, Dominique Salm, James Fraser, Susie Lee, Jonathan Wheeler, Jenny Musker and Kanita Sim, it is also home to a spectacular collection of bronze sculptures. You’ll find important pieces by several modern masters, including Mo Farquharson, Laurence Broderick and Mark Hall.

While either the Milton Art Gallery or the Wee Boorachie would amply reward a visit on their own, the real attraction is the combination of shops and attractions at Milton of Crathes. It’s difficult to think of a more pleasant place to spend a lazy afternoon, with its shady walks along the banks of the Dee, picnic spots and verdant lanes. It’s a great place to take visitors or to indulge in a bit of retail therapy with friends. You can stroll over to Crathes Castle, or take a trip on the restored steam trains on the Deeside Railway, enjoy a meal or snack at the Milton Brasserie and browse the shops. Atholl Countrywear is good for continental ladieswear classics and traditional menswear. Rustiques always has some interesting homewares and furniture. The shops are laid out in a courtyard, in sympathetically restored old stone buildings, linked by deep gravel and cobbled pathways and plenty of on-site parking. It’s all perfectly designed for a few hours pottering about.

ART |

Lovers of arts and crafts will be hitting the highway in September as over 220 of the region’s most gifted creative makers throw open their studio doors to share how they work and to exhibit their creations. Whether you’re crazy about ceramics, passionate about painting, enthusiastic about embroidery, wild about wood or mad about mixed media, there’s no better opportunity to meet the makers and maybe acquire a piece or two. This year’s North East Open Studios event runs from September 12th to the 21st. You can pick up the directory of exhibitors at many places throughout the region, or go to www.northeastopenstudios.co.uk where you’ll find the online directory and you can plan a custom NEOS trail. Keep an eye out for the bright yellow NEOS boards which signpost the venues. With so many exhibitors showing their work, it’s impossible to showcase everyone, but here are a few of our favourites from across all media and all parts of the region.

HISTORY |

Dr. Brown, of Hidden Aberdeen Tours, has combined her extensive education in Ethnology with her passion for preserving Aberdeen’s rich history and created a unique business that invites her guests on a variety of walking tours throughout the city. Although many topics are on offer, the most popular are the tours that delve into the city’s darker criminal past. During a two-hour Terror Tour of Torry, I and a sold-out crowd were taken progressively further into the past with each step, hearing of sordid murders, grave robbing and tragic shipwrecks, all of which took place

on the very streets on which we stood. The stories were captivating in their own right, but the real hook is in Hidden Aberdeen’s flair for drama. Through the use of local actors, guests literally come face to face with characters that shaped the folklore of the area. Suddenly, a young lady is being kidnapped before your very eyes and a broken-hearted captain is speaking despairingly about his crew that was lost in sight of home. Some of the scenes are so realistic, it takes restraint to stop yourself trying to intervene. Most of us are content to live our lives in the present, without ever giving those who came before us their deserved attention. Fortunately for Aberdeen’s forebears, Dr. Fiona-Jane Brown has found a way to ensure that the voices of the past are not only heard, but also remembered. www.hiddenaberdeen.co.uk

IMAGES: GRANT JAMIESON

When I was in school, my favourite teachers were those who really knew how to bring a subject to life, to transport you to another time or place and immerse you in something new and unfamiliar. After spending an evening with Dr. Fiona-Jane Brown, I suspect she would have made a very good teacher.

Having spent my University years in Texas, I took away some important life lessons. Among them, that a cow will tip over if startled from behind, eating hot chili peppers is best done with a glass of cold milk nearby and , perhaps most importantly, the only beer worth drinking is craft beer. So imagine my delight, all these years later, at finding one of the world’s fastest-growing craft breweries virtually on my doorstep.

the tanks. With only four ingredients going into each batch, and such a variety of flavours coming out, it is no wonder they call this a craft. Follow the tour with a session in the BrewDog beer school if you want to learn how to create the magic yourself or if you are content to just be a connoisseur, sidle up to the DogTap and check out the brew of the day. With some companies, growth means abandoning the ideals on which they were founded. A tour of BrewDog’s new facility reassures that this brand is as pure as the first bottle ever brewed, there is just a lot more of it to be enjoyed. www.brewdog.com

BrewDog, the establishment-bashing brewery that was the brainchild of Fraserburgh’s Martin Dickie and James Watt, has gone from a two man, one canine operation to a globally celebrated brand in under a decade. Edginess and non-conformity have been part of the BrewDog ethos from day one, and financing is no exception. Capitalising on its popularity, the company completed a record-breaking crowd funding scheme, the result of which now towers proudly over the town of Ellon, just North of Aberdeen, in the form of a shiny new brewery complete with bar and shop. The bar itself offers customers the chance to indulge in some of the freshest-brewed craft beer around while engulfed in the sights and smells of a working brewery. But to truly gain an appreciation for the passion and purity behind the beer, a factory tour is a must. As expected, the BrewDog personality is evident throughout in the form of eye-popping graffiti, but the real artistry happens inside

Ryan McAdam has lived life in the fast lane as motocross champion, but this year will see him shift things up a gear as he takes on four wheels instead. TOM FORD NOIR EXTREME Just launched a couple of months ago, Tom Ford’s Noir Extreme is designed to appeal to masculine immoderation and excess. More Evel Knievel than Senior Auditor. Starting from a warm top note blend of citrus and spice, it dries down to an unusual mastic, floral and pistachio heart over a woody amber base with a hint of vanilla.

THIERRY MUGLER A* MEN ULTRA ZEST Initially rather brash, as might be expected from the orange bottle, this summery scent has a big hit of citrus, ginger and mint, followed by a heart combining coffee, cinnamon and black pepper and deep notes of vanilla, patchouli and tonka bean.

YVES SAINT LAURENT LA NUIT DE L’HOMME Said by the makers to be a scent full of contrasts and tensions, with a veil of mystery and an explosive spicy accord. In reality, it’s rather more tame and accessible, with top notes of cardamom, bergamot, lavender and cedar. Cumin and vetiver dominate the base making for a sophisticated dry-down.

We’re in two minds about masculine scents here at Trend. There are those that prefer men to smell...well, let’s say naturally manly and those who prefer chaps to smell less primitive. Whichever camp you belong to, these scents are a long way from half a can of Lynx body spray...

JO MALONE INCENSE & CEDRAT Designed by perfume nose Marie Salamagne, Incense & Cedrat is designed for both men and women - so it’s potentially vulnerable to being swiped. It’s a well-balanced fragrance featuring lemon, pepper, elemi, olibanum, labdanum and benzoin.

JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER LE MALE This one has been around for since 1995, so it’s a proven favourite, with new bottles and editions every season. It’s best for autumn and winter and one best kept for the evening. You’ll find fresh mint and lavender over vanilla, spice and orange blossom and a tonka bean and aromatic woody base. When your kids look back on their childhood, what do you want them to remember? Will their anecdotes be about marathon World of Warcraft sessions and watching Netflix or will they be able to look back on family adventures discovering new things and exploring their surroundings?

It’s worth setting aside a few hours each week to spend some quality time together as a family. Not only will getting away from the lure of the sofa make your kids more adventurous, self-reliant and healthy, it’ll also improve relationships within the family. The trouble is that we soon run out of ideas for activities and end up with an

expensive trip to the cinema or a soft play centre, especially when the weather is less than tropical. Some adventures are simple spur of the moment ideas, like exploring rock pools, learning to read a map, or exploring ruins, while others need a bit more planning and preparation. Teach your kids how to build a shelter in the woods, build a raft, cook outdoors or paddle a kayak. Spend a day without electricity and work out how to cook, keep warm and entertain yourselves by candle light or lantern.

Probably best to let the neighbours know what you’re planning, so they don’t think the electricity has been cut off! Build up to trips that involve an overnight stay, perhaps combining geocaching with spending a night in a log cabin, or giving slacklining, watching red deer rut, or making a rope swing a go. Sure, you’ll get wet, miserable and muddy, but you’ll learn a lot, bond as a family and have some great stories to share.

WORDS BY PETER MITCHELL

Are you bewitched, bothered and bewildered by the world of high finance? Do you tremble at the prospect of deciding what to do about, for example, savings and investment, tax and pension matters, your retirement, or, God forbid, divorce? Well, fear not, you are not alone as you can turn to Buchan boy Sandy Robertson for help. He is managing director of Acumen Financial Planning, established in 2002, and has his head office down by the riverside in Aberdeen, with branches in Peterhead, Elgin and Edinburgh.

PETER MITCHELL became a valued Trend columnist nearly six years ago after 37 years on the Press and Journal, latterly as a Diary writer. For Trend, he has interviewed lots of prominent people including TV’s Angela Rippon. He is also much in demand as an amusing MC and after-dinner speaker.

‘I grew up on a small croft near Mintlaw,’ says Sandy, ‘and I was no academic. I left Peterhead Academy at 16 with a few O-levels and got a job with the Clydesdale Bank at Longside. By good fortune, I had a wonderful manager who put me down to a fusty basement to learn how to study for bank exams. ‘That stood me in good stead and was a springboard for the rest of my career which has involved acquiring many qualifications in accountancy and finance. At AFP, we take great pride in the fact that we have achieved the highest standards set by the Chartered Insurance Institute and the Institute of Financial Planning

AT AFP, WE TAKE GREAT PRIDE IN THE FACT THAT WE HAVE ACHIEVED THE HIGHEST STANDARDS SET BY THE CHARTERED INSURANCE INSTITUTE AND THE INSTITUTE OF FINANCIAL PLANNING. and were highly commended in this year’s national Professional Adviser Firm awards.’ The company has 28 staff and recently appointed two new directors, Keith Mackie, who works between Aberdeen and Peterhead and Edinburgh-based David Gow. A corporate and workplace pensions expert has also joined the team, providing advice to business owners and HR managers. ‘It is an important part of our service that we work closely with other professional services such as lawyers and accountants and put our heads together with clients to achieve the best result for them,’ says Sandy, who looks very sprightly despite being in business for nearly 40 years. Maybe it’s thanks to being a bit of a cyclist or enjoying his stress-busting hobby of playing the guitar!
