EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ASH DESIGN Ash Design is a London-based interior design studio, but that wasn’t always the case. More than ten years ago, Ash Design’s founder Sharon Elafouf was travelling around the globe, gathering experience and expertise in the interior design world and working with some of the best names and challenging clients. Having earned a degree in Interior Design, Sharon Elafouf started her journey as an interior designer in Paris in the most “organic way”, as she nicely puts it. Working with mainly French clients and achieving successful results, her business came to grow by word of mouth and it ended up changing as the years went by. From a work based on “decorative schemes”, Ash Design’s founder switched to projects that involve “space planning and architecture”. It was around that time that she integrated her approach, “offering clients a new dimension” of what she was doing. However, the choice to embrace this profession was something that came fairly easy to the interior designer, seeing as she was never a stranger to the world of travelling and staying at different hotels within each stay. This enabled her to “experience hotels and restaurants of authenticity and of significance”, meaning her vision and perception of these places ended up being different than the ones of an ordinary person. With this strong perception background, and with the growing interest in collecting contemporary decorative art, Ash Design’s founder believes her work is an extension of her private life and all the experiences that influence her on a daily basis. And even though this is one of the ways she keeps up with the latest trends - visiting all the art and design shows, travelling between Paris and Miami all the time, and keeping a close eye on a handful of her favourite interior designers - the most important element in every Ash Design project is their timelessness. They try to create spaces which are to be enjoyed by families and that at the same time “must be carefully thought out spaces that stand the test of time”. But of course that, in order to create these unique spaces, Ash Design’s founder must find inspiration somehow. And she had just told us that one of her biggest sources of inspiration is Peter Marino. Why? Because “his work encapsulates the benchmark brands he is designing so accurately through his sophisticated and forward thinking interior architecture, textiles and art”, as Sharon Elafouf so gracefully stated. However, Jean Louis Deniot and his architectural choices and colour palettes are also at the top of the list of inspiring interior design personalities for the Ash Design team. It is with this in mind that they always decide upon French artisans and craftsmen in their bespoke work for clients, as well as vintage and contemporary decorative art, which enables them to be in constant touch with many galleries and artists, sort of becoming their own source of inspiration.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTOPHER PILLET “Nonetheless, the designer believes that time is a necessity when developing a new piece so as to guarantee that every single process is accurately completed. He is also quite careful when selecting colours, materials and textures.” Being a latecomer to the fascinating world of design, the proficient designer, Christophe Pillet was actually considering becoming a musician as he immensely enjoyed playing music, however, once the design bug was manifested into his mind, there was no other option going forward, as he explained, “Step by step I discovered the design, it was not a passion it was just interesting people, curious people. I still believe that today, I’ve really found my job.” Specialising in interior design and interior architecture, Pillet has a wide array of successful projects that reflect the contemporaneity of French Design, from the astonishing Hotel Sahrai in Morocco to the awe-inspiring St. Tropez Villa, along with many furnishings, such as the Agatha Dreams lounge chair and the comfy Pillet Pine Beach sofa. Some of the characteristics that the French artist absolutely esteems about design are the context of the work, discovering brand-new perspectives and creations as well as learning from other tremendously talented individuals. Furthermore, the designer does not differentiate working on a furniture or interior space, or whatever the case may be because although each project has a different value, the most important thing is to express oneself and telling a narrative that is not only about the product but also the people who are acquiring it. To Pillet, it is all connected to sharing his point of view to the public. In regards to his signature style, Christophe Pillet highlighted the fact that most of his pieces obey to an eclectic abundance. Additionally, he views design as a way to create daring and playful projects, and not to take everything in a serious manner. Nonetheless, the designer believes that time is a necessity when developing a new piece so as to guarantee that every single process is accurately completed. He is also quite careful when selecting colours, materials and textures. Pillet recommends young designers not to accelerate their careers, to give a certain time and space for things to happen naturally, however, he adds that in this business one must really trust in themselves and always listen to their heart and intuitions. Young designers should also be aware of their surroundings and what other designers are doing.

HOW TO DECORATE LIKE A PRO

WITH THE BEST INTERIOR DESIGN TIPS EVER From time to time, we think about what we could do to modernize our home decor, giving it another level of sophistication and charm. Does it happen to you too? If so, have no fear because, in order to help everyone that is seeking a more appealing home decor, this practical decorating guide certainly contains some important tips and advice to pay attention. Just like any other professional field, Interior Design requires a knowledge that is renewed with the passing of the years and, with each new season, it's possible to point out new decorating trends to be followed, since this industry brings us innovations, new concepts and even experimentations in different styles, always providing beauty and style for any interior design projects.

INSPIRATIONS //

A new season is approaching and with it new decorating trends as well. But, there’s no need to wait for a new season to start sharing with you what is or isn’t trending when it comes to interior design. On the contrary, it’s always a great opportunity to anticipate, even because the trends are cyclical and renew themselves automatically. One thing is for sure, it does not matter if you have the best professionals by your side. That will be a great help, that's true. But the first — and perhaps the most important of all — advice on interior design is "research, research, research". It's crucial that you know what you are expecting as the final result. That's because, in addition to making your home decor look even more impressive, knowing the hottest decor trends will let you know how to compose beautiful, comfortable and stylish interiors, making your home even more attractive and cosier, but also ensuring each room gets the maximum potential from your decorating projects. Experts point out that many of the decoration trends for this season will remain strong by the end of the year, with some concepts, such as the conscious use of colours, the choosing neutral tones in the decoration and so on. Also optimized spaces and the use of wallpaper — especially metallic and matte — will continue to rise next year, ensuring that your decor looks not just beautiful and but also contemporary.

ODETTE

LONDON, UK

PROJECTS //

Considered by many the best restaurant of the year in 2017, Odette is much more than a name, it is a tribute to a very special grandmother. The Design company Universal Design Studio located in London, UK worked together with their clients The Lo & Behold Group to create a modern and contemporary hospitality project: The Odette Restaurant.

“The use of natural light and a bright palette offers a welcome departure from more traditional fine dining restaurants where darker, heavier tones are often found.” Situated in the newly refurbished Singapore National Art Gallery (home to the Nation's art collection), this magnificent Restaurant was designed as an art piece in itself, an extension of the collection housed in the historic building. When we asked Lee Ying Ying the Executive for Marketing and Communications for The Lo & Behold Group about the inspiration for this restaurant, he said: “ Odette is award-winning Chef-Owner Julien Royer’s first restaurant, located at the iconic National Gallery Singapore. It is a tribute to his grandmother Odette, who taught him how some of the most remarkable dishes can come from the simplest ingredients. This ethos has directed every aspect of the Odette brand – focusing on the fundamentals and applying the utmost care to every detail.” About the concept he also told us : "The design of the restaurant reflects Chef Julien's approach of keeping the integrity of ingredients and their pure flavours with a soft colour palette and décor that is comfortably elegant, all while respecting the historic and iconic National Gallery location.” The celebration of craft is demonstrated through the use of natural, raw elements presented in a soft colour palette of natural timber, pink terrazzo marble, with nickel and brass accents. The use of natural light and a bright palette offers a welcome departure from more traditional fine dining restaurants where darker, heavier tones are often found. Universal Design Studio sought to achieve these refreshing objectives all while respecting the historic and iconic location within the National Gallery – a Colonial Era, Classical building, formerly the Supreme Court House of Singapore.

Coveted magazine had the opportunity to interview the Belgian interior designer Delphine Mauroit, currently based in New York City (where she founded her company DMDesign & Architecture in September 2008), about her recent work with The Bennett Bar. Delphine Mauroit received a License in Architecture from the University of Brussels – Victor Horta Institute in Belgium. She is dedicated to creating beautiful and original design spaces while always showcasing extreme adaptability and attention to her clients’ creative requests. Tribeca (downtown casual chic, high income, celeb-worthy) We started the conversation around an upscale neighbourhood bar with the signature touch of the cocktail bars we’ve previously collaborated on: Raines Law Room and Dear Irving. The neighbourhood feeling is translated in our design: the diner feel of the logo, the vintage menu boards announcing the names and shifts of each bartender. A signature touch we kept from our other concepts is the service bell, but we’ve added a slight twist: when you ring the bell for service, the table number appears in the mirror behind the bar signalling your request for service. The experience at The Bennett revolves around the art of the cocktail, so we’ve accentuated the bar as the focal point. All seating around the elongated marble-topped bar is elevated so guests can watch the bartender prepare their cocktails. CM: What makes The Bennett Bar special when compared to other bars in NYC? DM: To make The Bennett a truly special place, its elegance and intimacy had to stand out. This elegance is conveyed through the contrasting materials we used: the chevron dark wooden wallpaper, the plush blue velvet banquettes, the raw concrete floor, the shagreen leather on the table tops. To reinforce the path between the bar and the seating area,

FLAMINGO RESTAURANT MADRID, SPAIN

MASQUESPACIO WORKSPACE VALENCIA, SPAIN

PROJECTS //

Masquespacio is an award-winning creative consultancy created in 2010 by Ana Milena Hernández Palacios and Christophe Penasse. Combining the two disciplines of their founders, interior design and marketing, the Spanish design agency creates branding and interior projects through a unique approach that results in fresh and innovative concepts rewarded with a continued international recognition by media specialised in design, fashion and lifestyle trends. They have worked on projects in several countries like Norway, USA, Germany and Spain. Masquespacio presents the recent renovation of its own studio that represents the working experience at the international creative consultancy below the concept “More” or “Mas” in Spanish. The design from Masquespacio’s workspace starts with the redesign of the design studio’s brand image set up on one hand by its logotype and on the other by its icon ‘Mas’, better known as ‘More’ in English. The letter ‘S’ in this case divides each of the graphic applications in two different parts; a division that symbolises the added value offered by the creative consultancy in each of its projects. Regarding the colour selection of the brand, it allows to play continuously with the various brand’s colours and choose the most “trendy” colour for each moment and project. This fact shows clearly the versatile nature from Masquespacio as a multidisciplinary design studio that works both on commercial as well as exclusive projects. The same concept is used for the interior design that plays with the different colours and partitions from the brand’s identity. Ana Milena Hernández Palacios, creative director of Masquespacio: “Although it is a working space, we looked to incorporate decorative elements, besides vivid colours and upholstered furniture with the aim to create a warm atmosphere above just designing a place to work at.” Entering the space, we meet a waiting room that at the same time do its job for more casual meetings and includes Masquespacio’s recently designed Toadstool collection. The right space, on the other hand, is divided into 2 different areas; Here we can encounter a meeting room, as well as the senior designer workplaces, separated as 2 individual cubes. The upper room at the same time follows Masquespacio’s identity palette of colours and finishes. Last but not least, some plants add a green touch to the working space from the Spanish design studio that has done projects in Germany, Norway, USA and Spain.

STYLE

ICONS From the first appearance of the mini skirt to mod-inspiring styles, the 1960’s were known for breaking traditions, with clothing styles going through radical changes. With the influence of British fashion, and the breakout of Twiggy, as well as the emanation of Parisian beauties like Catherine Deneuve, there was plenty to be inspired by the ‘60s.

TWIGGY Twiggy is best evoked as one of the first international supermodels, muse for the youth population and a fashion icon of the 1960’s, as well as the face of London’s “mod” scene. From her debut, at 16 years of age, her look based on three qualities: her stick-thin figure, a short boyish haircut and extraordinarily dark eyelashes. She was short for a model at 5’6” (167 cm), and extremely thin, which gave her a new kind of streamlined, androgynous sex appeal. Skinny to the point of emaciation, Twiggy’s intersexual charm became the big-eyed portrait of a modern girl. Her short hair, and exaggerated eye makeup gave her a unique look, letting her capture the spirit of the “swinging sixties” in London’s Carnaby Street mod scene, recognizable to this day. She had her career breakthrough when she was named The Face of 1966 by the Daily Express newspaper and voted British Woman of the Year. She soon appeared on the cover of many leading fashion magazines, including Elle, Vogue and The Tatler, and by 1967, she had modelled in France, Japan, and the US. Twiggy’s adolescent shape was the perfect starting point for the androgynous styles that began to emerge in the 1960’s.

STYLE ICONS //

“She also started a fashion line called the “Twiggy London” collection, and has begun a fashion blog to discuss fashion-like themes.” The trend was manifested in numerous elements: sweet A-line dresses with collars and ties, suits and dresses that took their details from military uniforms, or, in the case of Yves Saint Laurent, an explicit transposition of the male tuxedo to women. At the same time, under the title of “unisex”, designs that were minimalistic were suggested by designers such as Pierre Cardin and Andre Courreges. Ultimately, Twiggy became so beloved in America that she even inspired her own Barbie doll. Extra Twiggy merchandise soon followed, including a board game and a lunch box. Admirers would even copy her characteristic eye look with their own set of Twiggy fake eyelashes. Her timeless beauty surpasses the decades and her style remains in the vanguard of fashion for women of her age. She also started a fashion line called the “Twiggy London” collection, and has begun a fashion blog to discuss fashion-like themes.
