The trenchless industry has never lacked ambition. What matters now is how effectively that ambition translates into progress on the ground. That was one of the strongest impressions from No-Dig Live 2026. Across three days at NAEC Stoneleigh, the scale and sophistication of the technology on display were striking. But beyond the machinery and live demonstrations, there was a more pressing conversation: how do we accelerate the adoption of solutions that can make underground infrastructure more resilient, efficient and sustainable? It is a timely question. With AMP8 underway and mounting pressure on water and wastewater networks, the industry faces growing expectations to deliver more while minimising disruption, managing costs and extending the life of existing assets. This issue reflects the breadth of that challenge. Our extensive No-Dig Live coverage examines the developments and discussions that shaped this year’s exhibition, while features on pipeline rehabilitation, inspection and survey, and tunnelling demonstrate the increasingly sophisticated approaches available to asset owners and contractors. We also recognise the achievements and technical expertise driving the sector forward through our UKSTT and ISTT coverage. The opportunities for trenchless technology are considerable. So, too, is the responsibility to demonstrate its value beyond the exhibition floor. The next step is not simply to develop better solutions. It is to make sure they are being put to work. Barhale to lead £14.6M Alconbury Weald pipeline project

Civil engineering, infrastructure and tunnelling specialist Barhale has been appointed by Anglian Water to construct a £14.6M twin pumped rising main featuring complex horizontal directional drilling (HDD) crossings beneath the East Coast Main Line and the River Great Ouse.

T

he new 7,460m pipeline will provide the wastewater network capacity to meet future development at Alconbury Weald in Cambridgeshire. Centred on the former RAF Alconbury base, the fast-growing new town has planning permission for up to 190,000m2 of employment floorspace and approximately 6,200 homes with supporting infrastructure and facilities. Work will be delivered through the @one Alliance, the strategic delivery vehicle for Anglian Water’s Integrated Main Works programme, with civil engineering, MEICA and infrastructure specialist Barhale acting in the role of prime contractor. The twin pipeline will be laid at diameters of 400mm, 315mm and 250mm, predominantly in open-cut, around the eastern side of Huntingdon. 1.5km will pass through the development site with the remainder mainly crossing agricultural land. The route avoids the disruption a more direct route through Huntingdon town centre would cause. The pipeline will discharge directly into Huntingdon Water Recycling Centre inlet works. To meet growth projections, the new network infrastructure will require capacity for a volumetric load of 3840m3/day at a flow rate of 144l/s. 10 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

An existing pumping station at Alconbury Weald does not have sufficient capacity so developer Urban&Civic will build a new terminal pumping station. HDD will be used at 10 locations, including a complex crossing of the East Coast Main Line, where Barhale will install twin 355m-long 630mm sleeves to slipline the 400mm pipe, and beneath the River Great Ouse, where twin 292m-long 400mm sleeves will accommodate the 250mm pipeline. At the River Great Ouse crossing, Barhale will use track mats and Bailey bridges to cross drainage dykes and to avoid the archaeologically sensitive ridge and furrow feature. To improve materials management and safety along the almost 7.5km-long site, Barhale will also trial use of a new Wacker Neuson off-road dumper with a skip change system. When not operating as a conventional dumper, in can be fitted with a flatbed offering greater carrying capacity than a standard pickup truck while providing off-road capability. Ashley Jordan, Construction Manager, Barhale, said: “Housing and commercial growth, together with climate

McFaddens Civils snaps up the next TRACTO 20ACS

N

orthern Ireland based McFadden (Civils) is a family-run civil engineering business that will celebrate half a century in business next year. Started by Des McFadden in 1977 with a single digger, the company has evolved into a major contractor undertaking water contracts, road-service works, industrial-estate developments, and major earth-moving projects across Ireland and Scotland. There are now four generations of the family involved in the business all with a mission to provide the best service to customers. Over the last 30 years, McFaddens has become a committed HDD user - recognising the benefits of trenchless technology for utilities projects; in particular for its water contracts with Northern Irish, Irish Water and Scottish Water. Travelling between the two countries and in recognition of the diverse and challenging geological conditions, the company owned two TRACTO GRUNDODRILL HDD machines - an 18ACS ‘King of Rock and a 15XPT. Both machines have been well-maintained and are now available from TRACTO UK as they have been traded in for the latest HDD machine in the TRACTO range - a GRUNDODRILL 20ACS (Rockstar). The new rig combines rock and jet drilling capabilities in a single, highly automated platform designed to tackle complex ground conditions with greater efficiency, safety and productivity – perfect for the challenging conditions encountered on site by McFaddens. 12 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

In late August this year, the company was able to collect its new, full specification HDD rig from the TRACTO offices in Bedford whilst dropping off one of its exchange models. Whilst there, the McFaddens team undertook comprehensive familiarisation training at the Bedford demo ground learning about the cab and controls. Emmett Mc Fadden, Director, is now looking to deploy the new unit on a utilities project; “We’re very pleased with the swift conclusion of this deal. TRACTO has bent over backwards to help us with part-exchange and training and the machine will be a huge bonus on site. It offers us bigger diameters, more scope and will enable us to complete tough drills faster. We are looking forward to reporting back on the success of its first drill.” TRACTO’s HDD Manager, Jim O’Grady, was delighted to support the customer on their latest acquisition and will continue to ensure they get the best aftercare going forwards; “I would like to thank Emmett and Shane for their continued belief in TRACTO products. They also understand the importance of the support provided both here in Bedford and from our Dealer and Service Agent, Lucas Plant Sales, based in Co. Carlow in the Republic of Ireland.”

“

The aim was simple: to get people talking...guests had the chance to share their experiences, discuss the challenges facing the industry and offer their thoughts on what the future might hold.

What does the future of trenchless look like? That was one of the questions we put to visitors at No-Dig Live through our Connect Board, where we encouraged people to share their predictions for the industry over the next five years. We had a great mix of contributions, with visitors sharing their thoughts on everything from new technologies and industry challenges to the changes they’d like to see in the years ahead. It was particularly interesting to see how different people approached the question, drawing on their own experiences and areas of expertise. There were plenty of ideas worth exploring further, and we didn’t want to leave them behind at Stoneleigh. As part of our regular Connect features in Trenchless Works, we’ll be revisiting some of these predictions, speaking to the people who made them and taking a closer look at their thinking. We’re also keen to hear what our readers think, opening up the discussion to those who couldn’t join us at No-Dig

Live and encouraging more people to share their views on where the industry is heading. More than an exhibition conversation No-Dig Live was a great opportunity to show what Trenchless Connect is all about, bringing people together, encouraging discussion and giving businesses and individuals across the sector a platform to share their views. The response to Connect LIVE and the Connect Board has given us plenty to work with, and we’re keen to build on that momentum through our magazine, video content and digital channels. We’ll be kicking things off in the November issue of Trenchless Works, with the first of our regular Connect features looking back at some of the conversations and predictions from Stoneleigh, with plenty more to follow.

RSM Lining Supplies: Innovation in action

From the launch of its new LightRay UV LED curing system to live demonstrations of its Gecko electric cutting technology, RSM Lining Supplies showcased its expanding rehabilitation portfolio at No-Dig Live 2026.

N

o-Dig Live 2026 may have drawn to a close, but the conversations, connections and momentum generated across three days at NAEC Stoneleigh are set to continue for RSM Lining Supplies.

A New Innovation Takes Centre Stage

The company welcomed customers, contractors, industry professionals and partners to its stand, showcasing its latest trenchless rehabilitation equipment, delivering live demonstrations and unveiling an exciting new addition to its range of rehabilitation solutions.

Designed specifically for domestic and lateral rehabilitation applications, LightRay provides a compact and practical alternative for contractors looking to introduce UV LED curing into their operations.

For RSM, No-Dig Live has always been about more than exhibiting equipment. It provides an opportunity to meet those working across the industry, understand the challenges they face and demonstrate practical solutions designed to make rehabilitation work more efficient, precise and accessible. This year, that commitment was particularly evident. 20 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

One of the highlights of No-Dig Live 2026 was the unveiling of LightRay, RSM’s latest innovation in UV LED curing technology.

The system combines inversion lining with static UV LED curing, allowing the entire liner to be cured simultaneously. Covering applications from 75 mm to 225 mm, LightRay has been developed around the practical demands of smaller-diameter rehabilitation work. With the ability to navigate bends of up to 90° and a typical curing time of 20 minutes, the system offers contractors a flexible approach to UV LED curing without the footprint of larger systems.

PIPELINE REHABILITATION

“

Research and development into new products is a continuous focus for RSM, and the development of LightRay is a great example of that. Taking a proven product from the US market and adapting it to meet the needs of the UK market is really exciting. The response to LightRay at No-Dig Live has reinforced our belief in its potential to transform small-diameter CIPP lining. Phil Steele, Sales Director, RSM Lining Supplies

Commenting on the development and launch of LightRay, Phil Steele, Sales Director at RSM Lining Supplies, said: “Research and development into new products is a continuous focus for RSM, and the development of LightRay is a great example of that. Taking a proven product from the US market and adapting it to meet the needs of the UK market is really exciting. The response to LightRay at No-Dig Live has reinforced our belief in its potential to transform small-diameter CIPP lining.” The launch gave visitors the opportunity to see the new system first-hand and speak directly with the RSM team about how it could be applied to their own rehabilitation requirements. For the company, LightRay represents more than another product introduction. It reflects RSM’s continued focus on developing and supplying technology that responds to the changing needs of the trenchless industry.

Electric Cutting Technology in Action Alongside the LightRay unveiling, RSM’s Gecko E Lateral and Gecko E Power Cutters attracted significant attention throughout the event. Live demonstrations took place across all three days, giving visitors the opportunity to see the systems working in real time and understand the advantages of electric cutting technology in modern pipe rehabilitation. The Gecko E Lateral has been designed for precision reinstatement and lateral connection work, while the Gecko E Power provides a larger-scale cutting solution for applications up to 600 mm. Both systems combine electric operation with compact, highly manoeuvrable designs, integrated camera technology and precise controls, providing contractors with practical solutions for a wide range of cutting and reinstatement applications. PIPELINE REHABILITATION

“

The support and enthusiasm throughout the event made it a fantastic few days for the whole RSM team. Phil Steele, Sales Director, RSM Lining Supplies

The response to the Gecko range throughout No-Dig Live demonstrated continued interest in equipment that can deliver precision and performance while reducing the practical challenges associated with traditional cutting setups. The opportunity to experience the Gecko range also extends beyond the exhibition.

Innovation You Can See Across the RSM stand, the emphasis was firmly on seeing technology in action. Live CIPP demonstrations gave visitors the opportunity to follow the rehabilitation process and explore the equipment, materials and techniques that work together to deliver a complete trenchless solution.

RSM continues to offer promotional opportunities across its Gecko Cutter range, alongside complimentary on-site demonstrations through its Gecko Demo Van. This gives contractors the chance to see the equipment working in real conditions, discuss their applications with the technical team and assess which system is best suited to their requirements.

From lining and patching through to cutting, inspection and curing, the event provided a platform to showcase RSM’s range of equipment, materials and expertise supporting modern sewer rehabilitation.

This hands-on approach remains an important part of RSM’s customer support. With new equipment representing a significant investment, the company aims to give contractors the opportunity to understand what the technology can deliver before making a purchasing decision.

As the industry continues to evolve, access to the right technology is only one part of the equation. Technical knowledge, training, aftercare and practical support all play an important role in helping contractors achieve the best possible results from their investment.

22 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

Protecting highway drainage from the inside: A Trenchless rehabilitation project

Beneath our highways, drainage systems perform a vital role. They collect and channel water away from the road, helping to protect the surrounding infrastructure. At the same time, their internal surfaces may be exposed to oil, fuel and other contaminants that place considerable demands on protective coatings.

W

hen an existing coating reaches the end of its service life, rehabilitation requires more than simply applying a new layer. Substrate preparation, material compatibility and precise application all play a part in achieving a reliable protective system.

Building chemical protection layer by layer

In September 2026, a rehabilitation project brought together IPA Bauchemische Produkte GmbH’s (short: IPA Bauchemie) technical expertise and the practical experience of the team at T-Umweltdienste GmbH. The objective was to renew the internal protection of a highway drainage structure using a defined, multi-layer coating system.

The coating was applied in two layers, each approximately 1 mm thick. At an ambient temperature of 20°C, the team observed a waiting period of around six hours between coats, resulting in a total coating thickness of approximately 2 mm.

Preparation: getting every detail right On 15 September 2026, IPA Bauchemie provided on-site training for the T-Umweltdienste GmbH team. Before work began, the employees were introduced to the correct preparation and application of the materials, as well as their role within the complete coating system. The training focused on two key stages: preparing IPA Sewer Slurry ph+ with IPA Liquid ph+, followed by adjusting IPA Polyschicht® 2K with IPA Filler. The specified layer thicknesses, application conditions and waiting times between coats were explained and discussed. This practical preparation established a clear framework for the work ahead. In specialist rehabilitation projects, the performance of a coating system depends not only on the materials selected, but also on the care taken during every stage of application. “Understanding how the individual materials work together is essential. The training helped us clarify the application sequence and the details that matter when building up the system on site.” T-Umweltdienste GmbH

The next stage involved IPA Polyschicht® 2K, prepared with IPA Filler. The additive was incorporated evenly to achieve a thixotropic consistency, helping the coating remain in place on the internal surfaces during application.

Each stage followed the preceding one in a defined sequence. The specified consistency, layer thickness and waiting times helped the team maintain the intended coating build-up throughout the rehabilitation process. “The key is to combine the right system with careful workmanship. Clear application guidance and technical support help ensure that the individual steps are carried out as specified.” IPA Bauchemie Designed for the demands of highway drainage Highway drainage structures can be exposed to contaminants including oil and fuel. Chemical resistance is therefore an important consideration when selecting a suitable protective coating. IPA Polyschicht® 2K was selected as the final protective layer for this project. The IPA Polyschicht® system holds approvals issued by the German Centre of Competence for Construction (DIBt) for the specific applications defined in the relevant approval documentation. The applicable approval requirements must be considered when selecting and specifying a system for a particular structure.

Before the new coating system could be installed, the existing coating was removed from the internal pipe surfaces. The substrate was then prepared for the subsequent applications.

The project demonstrates that successful infrastructure rehabilitation is built on a combination of suitable materials, sound preparation and precise application. From removing the existing coating to applying the final protective layer, each step contributes to the overall quality of the completed system.

With the surface ready, the team applied IPA Sewer Slurry ph+ mixed with IPA Liquid ph+. The material was installed across the internal pipe surface in two coats, with an interval of approximately six hours between applications.

It also highlights the value of cooperation between the applicator and the material manufacturer. Practical training, clear procedures and technical support help translate product specifications into a carefully executed application on site.

This stage formed the foundation for the subsequent protective layer. Following the specified application sequence and allowing the appropriate intervals between coats were important parts of the installation process.

Going the distance: Radius Subterra’s Subcoil solution for water main rehabilitation Factory-folded PE lining offers a way to rehabilitate small-diameter water mains, combining long-length installation with a close fit inside the existing pipeline. Ageing water mains affected by leakage, failed joints or internal corrosion present a continuing challenge for network operators. Rehabilitation provides a way to retain existing infrastructure while installing a new internal liner, reducing the excavation associated with open-cut replacement. Showcased by Radius Subterra at No-Dig Live 2026, Subcoil builds on established folded-pipe lining principles. The current development range is designed for water mains up to 6 inches in diameter. Prepared in the factory, installed on site Subcoil uses a continuous PE80 liner, folded during manufacture to reduce its cross-section and supplied on a drum. A temporary sheath holds the folded shape during transport and insertion. 26 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

Before installation, the existing main is surveyed, isolated and cleaned. The folded liner is then pulled through the prepared pipeline, with its reduced profile enabling long installation lengths and low winching loads. Once positioned, controlled pressurisation causes the temporary sheath to split, allowing the liner to return towards its circular shape and form a close fit inside the host main. This pressure-driven reversion does not require steam heating, hot-water circulation or a resin-curing stage. Factory preparation removes the need to fold the liner on site. Purpose-designed end fittings and service connections enable reconnection, testing and commissioning before return to service.

PIPELINE REHABILITATION Longer lengths, fewer joints Subcoil is designed for supply with up to 1.2 kilometres of continuous, joint-free PE liner on a single drum. The maximum supplied length depends on liner diameter. Long continuous lengths offer the opportunity to reduce intermediate joints and equipment set-ups, helping simplify installation and reduce time on site. Drum delivery also reduces the space needed to assemble a conventional pipe string before insertion. Each installation is planned around the existing pipeline route and site layout to make the most of Subcoil’s long-length capability. Making use of the existing asset Subcoil is designed for the rehabilitation of cast iron, ductile iron, steel, PVC and asbestos-cement water mains. Structural and interactive liner options allow performance to be matched to the application. An interactive liner works with a structurally suitable host main, providing a leak-tight barrier while relying on the existing pipe for part of its structural performance.

Assessment of the asset therefore helps establish the appropriate lining design. The close fit provides high retention of the existing main’s bore. The continuous PE liner forms a barrier against leakage and separates the water supply from internal host-pipe corrosion, while its smooth internal surface supports hydraulic performance. Reducing work at the surface Using the existing pipeline as the installation route can reduce excavation and reinstatement compared with extensive open-cut replacement. This can also reduce spoil removal, traffic management requirements and disruption to customers and local communities. For water main rehabilitation projects, the combination of drum delivery, factory folding and pressure-driven reversion offers a way to organise more of the preparation away from site. Subcoil applies these established principles to small-diameter mains, with a focus on continuous installation lengths and retaining the infrastructure already in the ground.

Extending asset life: MC-Building Chemicals’ approach to infrastructure rehabilitation From active leak sealing and structural repair to protective coatings and manhole rehabilitation, MC-Building Chemicals is supporting contractors and asset owners in addressing the challenges of ageing underground infrastructure.

T

he rehabilitation of ageing infrastructure remains a significant priority for the UK’s water and wastewater sector. With asset owners facing increasing pressure to maintain network performance, manage costs and minimise disruption, effective repair and protection technologies have become essential to extending the service life of existing structures. For MC-Building Chemicals, these challenges are central to its approach to infrastructure rehabilitation. The company provides specialist repair materials, injection systems and protective technologies designed to restore deteriorating assets and help prevent further damage. Showcasing its solutions at No-Dig Live 2026, MCBuilding Chemicals engaged with water utilities, contractors, consultants and industry professionals, highlighting the role of engineered repair and protection systems in maintaining underground infrastructure. Global expertise, local support MC-Building Chemicals forms part of the international MC-Bauchemie Group, a family-owned business established in Germany more than 60 years ago. technology, waterproofing systems, repair materials, coatings, injection technologies and infrastructure rehabilitation solutions. Its international presence provides access to extensive research, development and technical expertise, supported by local teams working directly with customers on individual project requirements. In the UK, the company’s infrastructure and wastewater activities support water utilities, contractors, specialist installers and consultants working with deteriorating assets, often in aggressive environments where conventional repair approaches may not deliver the required service life. Applications range from ageing manholes and wastewater treatment structures to pumping stations, chambers, tunnels and other buried infrastructure. Across these environments, the objective remains consistent: extending asset life, reducing whole-life costs and limiting disruption to essential services. MC-Fastpack: tackling active water ingress Water ingress is a recurring challenge in underground infrastructure, affecting chambers, shafts, tunnels and utility structures. If left untreated, infiltration can contribute to deterioration, create operational difficulties and increase maintenance requirements.

PIPELINE REHABILITATION

One of the technologies highlighted by MC-Building Chemicals at No-Dig Live was its MC-Fastpack Injection System, developed to provide a rapid and controlled method of sealing active water ingress. The system uses resin injection to address leaks, with an emphasis on straightforward application and consistent performance in demanding site conditions. For contractors dealing with active leaks, response time and ease of application are important considerations, particularly where access is restricted or operational disruption must be minimised. MC-Fastpack is designed to address these requirements through a controlled injection process, helping contractors carry out targeted leak-sealing work without unnecessary complexity. As asset owners increasingly focus on maintaining existing infrastructure, effective injection systems continue to play an important role in repair and rehabilitation programmes. Repair mortars for demanding environments Wastewater infrastructure operates in particularly challenging conditions. Chemical attack, abrasion, moisture ingress and mechanical wear can all contribute

to the deterioration of concrete structures, making the selection of suitable repair materials critical to long-term performance. MC-Building Chemicals offers a range of cementitious repair mortars developed specifically for infrastructure and wastewater applications. These materials are designed to provide strong adhesion, durability and resistance to aggressive service environments, supporting the repair and reinstatement of deteriorated concrete. Applications include localised defect repair, rebuilding damaged concrete profiles and preparing substrates for subsequent protective coating systems. The effectiveness of a rehabilitation programme often depends on how individual repair stages work together. Suitable substrate preparation, structural reinstatement and protective treatment are all important considerations when developing a repair specification. At No-Dig Live, discussions with contractors focused on how these systems can be combined to deliver both immediate repairs and longer-term protection for infrastructure assets.

OCTOBER 2026 | TRENCHLESS WORKS 29

PIPELINE REHABILITATION Technical support beyond the product Successful infrastructure rehabilitation depends on more than the selection of individual repair materials. Understanding the condition of an asset, identifying the mechanisms responsible for deterioration and developing an appropriate repair specification are important stages in achieving a durable outcome. MC-Building Chemicals supports its UK customers through specification development, condition assessments, site surveys, application guidance, contractor training and project-specific technical recommendations. Combining practical site experience with the wider technical resources of the MC-Bauchemie Group, the company works with contractors, consultants and asset owners to identify solutions suited to the operational and environmental demands of each project. This support is particularly relevant where structures are exposed to aggressive wastewater conditions or where access, installation requirements and ongoing operations present additional challenges. Integrated manhole rehabilitation Manhole deterioration remains a widespread challenge across the UK’s drainage and wastewater networks. Corrosion, infiltration, groundwater ingress and general structural degradation can affect asset performance, while full replacement may involve significant excavation, reinstatement costs and disruption. Rehabilitation offers an alternative approach, allowing existing structures to be repaired and protected while retaining much of the original asset. MC-Building Chemicals provides integrated manhole rehabilitation systems designed to address several causes of deterioration within a coordinated repair process. These include leak sealing, substrate preparation, reprofiling, structural repair and the application of chemical-resistant protective linings. By combining these stages, contractors can address existing defects while introducing measures designed to protect against further deterioration. This approach reflects the increasing importance of whole-life asset management, with rehabilitation strategies focused not only on restoring immediate performance but also on extending service life and reducing future maintenance requirements. 30 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

By considering material selection alongside application methods and long-term performance, rehabilitation projects can be planned around both technical requirements and commercial considerations. Supporting the future of infrastructure rehabilitation The discussions at No-Dig Live 2026 reinforced the continuing importance of repair and rehabilitation technologies in addressing the challenges facing the UK’s underground infrastructure. As ageing networks require ongoing maintenance and asset owners seek to maximise the value of existing infrastructure, the demand for effective leak-sealing systems, durable repair materials and protective technologies is expected to remain an important focus for the sector. For MC-Building Chemicals, the exhibition provided an opportunity to demonstrate its range of solutions and strengthen relationships with contractors, utilities and industry partners. Through its injection technologies, specialist repair mortars, manhole rehabilitation systems and technical support services, the company continues to focus on helping asset owners and contractors extend the working life of critical infrastructure while reducing the need for disruptive replacement works.

UHRIG’s Quick-Lock: From German innovation to global pipe rehabilitation More than three decades after the introduction of its mechanical pipe repair system, UHRIG continues to expand Quick-Lock’s international presence, with new pressure pipe applications and the establishment of a US manufacturing facility marking the latest stages in its development.

F

rom its origins as a German civil engineering contractor to the international development of its trenchless rehabilitation technologies, the UHRIG Group has built more than six decades of experience in underground infrastructure. Founded in 1963 by Helmut and Anna Uhrig in Geisingen, Germany, the family-owned business began with a municipal pipeline project in its hometown. That early involvement in underground construction established a practical engineering approach that continues to influence the group’s product development. Today, UHRIG operates across several areas of civil engineering and infrastructure technology, with its Quick-Lock mechanical pipe repair system becoming one of its most established international products. First developed in 1993, the system has evolved from a solution for localised sewer rehabilitation into a range of mechanical repair technologies serving wastewater, potable water, industrial and pressure pipe applications.

32 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

From engineering concept to established technology The development of Quick-Lock began in 1993 when Thomas Uhrig sought a practical solution for trenchless pipe rehabilitation. Drawing on principles used in precision mechanics, the resulting stainless-steel sleeve incorporated a mechanical locking mechanism comparable to the ratchet system of a watch. The mechanism allows the sleeve to expand and lock progressively against the internal pipe wall, resisting reverse movement and securing the sealing element in position. Unlike rehabilitation techniques that rely on chemical curing processes, Quick-Lock uses mechanical expansion to achieve a seal within the existing pipeline. The design subsequently progressed from an engineering concept to a patented rehabilitation system, receiving the Baden-Württemberg Innovation Award, also known as the Rudolf Eberle Prize, in 1997. Its development demonstrated how practical experience in civil engineering could be translated into a specialist product for addressing defects within existing underground infrastructure.

PIPELINE REHABILITATION

Expanding beyond Germany Following its introduction in the German market, Quick-Lock gradually established an international presence. UHRIG entered the US market in 2004 and has since developed a network of certified installation partners supporting the technology across international markets. These partnerships have played an important role in extending access to the system while maintaining consistent installation procedures and technical standards. Over time, the Quick-Lock range has expanded to address a broader selection of rehabilitation requirements, including localised pipe repairs, liner end connections, large-diameter applications, wells and pressure pipelines. The group’s wider engineering activities have also continued to develop. Alongside its civil engineering operations, UHRIG has introduced technologies including excavator-mounted compaction equipment and its THERM-LINER wastewater heat recovery system.

In 2011, THERM-LINER technology was installed at the Élysée Palace in Paris, demonstrating the application of wastewater infrastructure for heat recovery. These developments reflect the company’s wider approach to engineering, with technologies originating from practical construction and infrastructure challenges. Extending Quick-Lock applications Although Quick-Lock was initially developed for wastewater pipe rehabilitation, subsequent product developments have extended the underlying mechanical sealing principle into other infrastructure applications. The Quick-Lock Well system has been developed for the rehabilitation of potable water, seawater and service water wells. Designed for vertical or horizontal installation, it can be used to address leaking joints, fractures in well screen casings and applications requiring the selective sealing of screen intervals.

OCTOBER 2026 | TRENCHLESS WORKS 33

PIPELINE REHABILITATION The system’s mechanical locking principle provides an alternative to rehabilitation approaches dependent on chemical curing, with configurations designed for different operating environments and host pipe conditions. For larger-diameter rehabilitation projects, the QuickLock BIG range provides a modular solution for manentry pipelines. Manufactured from 316L or 904L stainless-steel segments with elastomeric seals, the components can be transported through standard manhole openings and assembled within the existing pipe. The mechanically locked system can be used for localised repairs and liner end connections without chemical curing processes. These developments have broadened the potential applications of Quick-Lock beyond conventional sewer repair, providing solutions for a wider range of pipeline conditions and operating environments.

Production officially commenced on 7 January 2026, when the first Quick-Lock sleeves were manufactured at the new facility. The move represents a significant step for UHRIG’s North American operations, following approximately two decades of activity in the US market. By establishing local manufacturing capacity, the company aims to reduce its reliance on imported products, improve delivery times and provide more responsive support to contractors and infrastructure operators. Quick-Lock has already established a presence in US wastewater, stormwater and potable water rehabilitation applications, supported by recognised technical standards and approvals.

Developing solutions for pressure pipelines

According to UHRIG, the system complies with relevant ASTM standards and holds approvals including those associated with the Florida and Minnesota Departments of Transportation, alongside other international certifications.

A further development in the Quick-Lock range is its Pressure Pipe system, introduced in 2025 for rehabilitation applications involving pressurised pipelines.

The new manufacturing operation strengthens the company’s ability to serve the North American market while maintaining the engineering and production principles developed through its German operations.

Available in Low Duty (LD) and High Duty (HD) configurations, Quick-Lock Pressure Pipe has been developed for pipeline repairs and liner connections in nominal diameters from DN 150 to DN 800.

Building on six decades of experience

The range covers stated internal pressure requirements from -0.9 to +50 bar, with configurations designed to accommodate different operating conditions. According to UHRIG, testing of the HD version demonstrated resistance to more than two million dynamic pressure cycles. The technology has applications across potable water, industrial, seawater and district heating infrastructure, extending the use of mechanical pipe repair systems into networks operating under pressure. The development reflects the increasing demand for rehabilitation solutions capable of extending asset life while reducing the excavation, disruption and resource requirements associated with conventional replacement. US manufacturing marks a new milestone One of the latest developments in Quick-Lock’s international growth has been the establishment of a manufacturing facility in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania. 34 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

Now operating under third-generation family leadership, the UHRIG Group continues to combine its civil engineering background with the development of specialist infrastructure technologies. Its activities extend beyond pipe rehabilitation to include underground construction, mechanical engineering, digital network management and wastewater heat recovery. For Quick-Lock, more than three decades of development have seen the original mechanical sleeve concept adapted to a growing range of underground infrastructure applications. From localised sewer repairs to well rehabilitation and pressure pipeline systems, the technology illustrates how established engineering principles can evolve to meet new operational requirements. With production now established in the United States and the Quick-Lock range continuing to develop, UHRIG is building on its international presence while maintaining its focus on practical solutions for the rehabilitation and protection of existing pipeline infrastructure.

INSPECTION & SURVEY

Beyond the camera: The evolution of CCTV inspection vehicles

Modern CCTV inspection vans are becoming sophisticated mobile workspaces, integrating robotic inspection technology, advanced imaging and digital reporting. iPEK UK and WinCan demonstrate how this approach is changing the way underground drainage assets are surveyed and managed.

36 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

INSPECTION & SURVEY

T

he modern CCTV inspection van has evolved considerably from the days when an engineer arrived on site with little more than a camera and a reel of cable. Today, these vehicles are purpose-built inspection environments, bringing together robotic technology, high-definition imaging, data capture and reporting capabilities within a single mobile platform. The iPEK and WinCan offering in the UK reflects this evolution, with CCTV inspection vehicles configured around the operational requirements of the survey rather than simply providing transport for camera equipment. Configurations can incorporate mainline crawlers, lateral inspection systems, push cameras and specialist software, enabling contractors to survey everything from small domestic connections to extensive sewer networks. Turning inspection data into asset intelligence CCTV surveys can generate substantial volumes of video footage and inspection data. However, without effective systems for recording, coding, organising and reporting the information collected, much of its practical value can be lost. WinCan software provides the digital framework for managing this information, while iPEK’s camera technology delivers the visual inspection data. Together, the technologies allow operators to record observations during a survey and convert them into structured inspection records and reports.

This integration is becoming increasingly important as sewer and drainage surveys move beyond visual inspection towards comprehensive condition assessment and asset management. The objective is no longer simply to establish what a pipe looks like. It is to create a consistent, reliable record of what has been identified, where defects or areas of concern are located and what those findings reveal about the condition of the asset. Such information can support more informed maintenance planning, rehabilitation decisions and long-term infrastructure management. Efficiency and flexibility in the field The diversity of the UK’s drainage infrastructure places considerable demands on inspection contractors. A typical working day might involve investigating a domestic connection, surveying a commercial drainage network and inspecting a large-diameter mainline sewer. Having access to several inspection disciplines within a single vehicle allows contractors to respond to these varying requirements without deploying separate equipment and vehicles for each application. The benefits extend beyond operational efficiency. Integrated lateral inspection systems can also help minimise disruption by enabling investigations through existing sewer access points, potentially reducing the need to enter individual properties.

OCTOBER 2026 | TRENCHLESS WORKS 37

INSPECTION & SURVEY

This approach can support more effective network mapping, improve the identification of misconnections and provide access to sections of drainage infrastructure that might otherwise prove difficult to investigate.

To support its UK customers, iPEK and WinCan operate a service centre in Wakefield, complemented by mobile service provision covering northern and southern regions of the country.

For contractors, the ability to undertake a wider range of surveys from one vehicle offers greater flexibility in planning and delivering inspection programmes.

The future of CCTV inspection

A purpose-built mobile inspection platform The vehicle itself has become an integral part of the inspection system. iPEK’s configurable CCTV vans incorporate operator workstations, dedicated equipment storage, integrated power supplies and reporting facilities, creating a working environment designed to support the complete inspection process. Some configurations can also incorporate lithium battery systems supported by roof-mounted solar panels, reducing dependence on conventional generators. These features reflect the growing importance of efficiency throughout the inspection process, from arriving on site and deploying equipment to completing surveys, processing information and producing reports. For contractors, vehicle reliability and technical support are equally important considerations. A fully equipped CCTV inspection van represents a significant investment and an essential revenue-generating asset, making equipment availability and minimising downtime critical to day-to-day operations. 38 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

The continued development of CCTV inspection technology reflects a wider change in how underground infrastructure is assessed and managed. High-resolution imaging, robotic crawlers, lateral inspection capabilities, measurement technology and digital reporting are increasingly being brought together within integrated vehicle-based systems. Rather than simply capturing images of pipe interiors, modern inspection platforms are capable of generating structured information that can inform maintenance priorities, asset condition assessments and future rehabilitation strategies. As Britain’s ageing drainage infrastructure places greater emphasis on preventative maintenance, accurate condition assessment and minimising excavation, the value of reliable inspection data is likely to increase. The CCTV inspection van is therefore becoming far more than a vehicle carrying camera equipment. It is an integrated mobile inspection platform, capable of transforming difficult-to-access underground assets into documented, measurable and actionable information.

INSPECTION & SURVEY

Why the next piece of inspection kit on your van should earn its place By Thomas Baxter, Managing Director, Rausch UK

W

alk the floor at No-Dig Live, and the conversations are often easy to read. Contractors who know their equipment well, operators who have strong opinions about what works and what does not, and purchasing decisions that are often shaped as much by familiarity as by a fresh assessment of what is actually available. When the time comes to replace inspection equipment, the path of least resistance is to replace like with like from the same supplier. That is wholly understandable. It is also a decision that nobody really needs to make; it can just happen. The existing system worked, the operators know it, and the accessories are already in the van. The cost of inertia Inspection equipment, however, is not a commodity. A camera that sits in a workshop because the service turnaround is three weeks is not a productive asset, regardless of how good its specification list is. A system that the operator finds awkward to use, that nobody is confident servicing in the field, or that struggles when a job does not fit neatly within the manual carries a cost too. Those costs may be harder to see on a purchase order, but they show up in downtime, lost productivity and repeat visits.

40 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

At Rausch, we often have conversations with contractors that repeatedly raise the same themes: uptime, support, and that gap between what the brochure says the equipment does and what it actually delivers on site. These are not complaints about bad equipment. They are the normal friction points of a relationship with a supplier that has not been properly tested for some time. The inertia is understandable. Its cost is not always visible until you look for it. Buy around the job, not the badge The starting point for any equipment decision should be the work, not the supplier. Pipe diameter, length, access, survey type, bends, operator preference - these should drive the specification. The brand comes after. That sounds straightforward, but it rarely plays out that way. For better or worse, most contractors have settled into a relationship with one manufacturer, and the choice of equipment follows from that relationship rather than the other way around. As a result, the market is not tested as often as it should be. That matters because inspection requirements are not static. A contractor that starts with a compact push camera for residential drainage work may end up taking on longer commercial runs with lateral

inspections, or jobs that require pan-tilt capability. The question at each stage is whether the existing supplier is still the right fit, or whether the relationship has simply continued because nobody has looked hard – or looked at all – at the alternatives.

That knowledge often does not travel from site to procurement. Giving operators the chance to compare systems on the jobs they actually do, in the conditions they actually work in, yields better decisions than any paper-based specification comparison.

A supplier should grow with you

Many contractors who have challenged their default supplier tend to say the same thing: they wish they had done it sooner. Not because the incumbent equipment was necessarily worse, but because the comparison gave them information they did not previously have. In some cases they stayed with what they had. In others they moved. In both cases, the decision was better for having been properly made.

A supplier that can support that progression, from a compact 8 kg pan-and-tilt system, through long-range push systems, crawlers and ultimately complete vehicle installations, makes growth much easier to manage. The value is not simply having more products in a catalogue. It is being able to add capability without repeatedly starting again: rebuilding training, relearning interfaces, managing new service relationships from scratch each time the work changes. Put it side by side Specifications are the start of a conversation, not the end of one. The operators who use equipment every day will tell you things that do not make it into brochures: how a camera handles in a flooded chamber, how quickly a system can be broken down and reloaded at the end of a long day, whether the image reads clearly in difficult conditions or whether you end up spending time adjusting and secondguessing.

The question worth asking Nobody should change inspection equipment supplier for the sake of it. But nobody should keep buying the same equipment simply because that is what they have always bought. Before the next investment, go back to the floor. Ask the operators. Put the alternatives side by side. Compare the support and service proposition, not just the camera spec. The conversations you hear at No-Dig Live are a good starting point, but the real test happens on site. The equipment has to earn its place on the van. OCTOBER 2026 | TRENCHLESS WORKS 41

The visits provided an opportunity for councillors to see first-hand how trenchless methods can support the installation, maintenance and rehabilitation of underground utilities, while potentially reducing the need for extensive excavation, minimising disruption to roads and businesses, and supporting more efficient infrastructure delivery. Beyond the engineering benefits, the exhibition also highlighted the important economic contribution that major industry events make to their host regions. Bringing exhibitors, contractors, manufacturers and visitors together from across the UK and beyond, NoDig Live generated opportunities for local hospitality businesses, accommodation providers and the wider Warwickshire economy. Following his visit, Cllr Rob Howard welcomed the exhibition’s contribution to the local economy and expressed enthusiasm for the technologies on display, while recognising that cost and practical application remain important considerations for local authorities. Councillor Rob Howard, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economy and Rural Development, said: “Events like No-Dig Live are important for Warwickshire because they bring visitors into the county and support the local economy through hotel stays, hospitality and other local spending. “I also found the exhibition itself fascinating. Technologies that can help install and maintain underground utilities with less disruption clearly have an important role to play. “It was great to see an event of this scale taking place here in Warwickshire, and I would be very pleased to see No-Dig Live return to the county in the future.” 48 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

The engagement demonstrated the value of creating stronger connections between the trenchless industry and local government, bringing technical innovation into conversations about highways management, economic growth, public infrastructure and the everyday experiences of local communities. For No-Dig Live, welcoming regional leaders represented more than an opportunity to showcase the exhibition. It was a chance to put trenchless technology directly in front of those helping shape the future of Warwickshire’s infrastructure. As the industry continues to champion less disruptive, more sustainable approaches to underground works, these relationships will be increasingly important in ensuring trenchless solutions receive the consideration they deserve. Inspiring the next generation Among the established industry leaders, experienced engineers and world-class manufacturers at Stoneleigh was another group with an equally important role to play: the next generation. As the sector confronts growing infrastructure demands and an increasing need for technical skills, No-Dig Live 2026 made inspiring future talent a central part of its programme. The exhibition welcomed students and representatives from the University of Warwick, the University of Birmingham, Coventry College, Solihull College, as well as several independent academics, giving them a valuable opportunity to step beyond the classroom and experience the world of underground infrastructure first-hand.

NO-DIG LIVE 2026 Ideas, expertise and international perspectives

Celebrating the people behind progress

The UKSTT conference programme complemented the live exhibition with practical insight and bigpicture thinking. Contributions from Anglian Water, Severn Trent, Southern Water and Thames Water brought operational perspectives to discussions on rehabilitation, asset management, blockages, leakage and network performance.

The UKSTT Gala Dinner and Awards on 30th September gave the sector a chance to recognise exceptional projects, innovation and the individuals helping move the industry forward.

Transport for London and the University of Birmingham considered resilience and the impact of streetworks; WRc introduced its new sewer renovation design guide. An International Forum added perspectives from Australia, Germany and South Africa, alongside UK and ISTT contributions. Across the discussions, one central message gained ground: trenchless solutions deserve consideration early in project planning, not merely as alternatives once traditional excavation has already been selected. Linking these debates with demonstrations on the show floor gave visitors a fuller picture of how change happens in practice.

50 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

Dawn Greig, Chief Commercial Officer at Picote Solutions, was named Trenchless Woman of the Year 2026, recognising her sustained contribution to the sector. Manraj Toor of AtkinsRéalis received the Young Professional Award, with fellow finalists Freddie Fowler of McAllister Group and Steven Richardson of Picote UK highlighting the depth of emerging talent. Iain Naismith, Senior Research Fellow at IKT - Institute for Underground Infrastructure, was also honoured with the Special Recognition Award, acknowledging his valuable contribution to the industry. The evening reinforced an important truth: progress depends on the ingenuity and collaboration of people across asset owners, designers, contractors, suppliers, researchers and training organisations.

NO-DIG LIVE 2026

Celebrating the people behind progress

More than an exhibition: a platform for what comes next As the final demonstrations concluded and the exhibition halls began to empty, one thing was abundantly clear: No-Dig Live 2026 had delivered far more than three days of industry activity. It had demonstrated the remarkable strength of the trenchless community, brought together decisionmakers and innovators, opened new conversations and given the next generation an opportunity to see the future of underground infrastructure first-hand. Paul Harwood, Managing Director of Westrade Group, said: “No-Dig Live 2026 was everything we hoped it would be and more. The atmosphere, the innovation and the sheer enthusiasm across the exhibition were tremendous. “What stood out was the diversity of people coming together. We had major utility companies, manufacturers, contractors and engineers, alongside local government representatives and students who could one day become the industry’s next generation of leaders.

“

No-Dig Live... a place where the industry comes together, where ideas become opportunities and where the future of trenchless technology takes shape.

“That is what No-Dig Live is all about. It isn’t simply an exhibition. It’s a place where the industry comes together, where ideas become opportunities and where the future of trenchless technology takes shape. “I couldn’t be prouder of what we have achieved alongside our exhibitors, partners, UKSTT and the wider industry. The momentum is there, the ambition is there, and I genuinely believe the best is still to come.” The machines may have stopped, and the exhibition doors may have closed, but the ideas, relationships and opportunities generated at Stoneleigh are only just gathering pace. No-Dig Live 2026 didn’t just showcase the future of underground infrastructure – it helped move it forward.

FOCUS ON TRENCHLESS TRAINING

Training the Trainers: Building local capacity in trenchless markets

Frank Reilly Director JBP’s Trenchless, Training Programme

F

country – adapted, taught and refined by people who understand the market from the inside, not delivered as a one-off import.

or years, the standard model for bringing trenchless training into a new market has looked the same: fly in an expert, run a course, fly out again. It works and there are of course undeniable benefits of having direct access to the experts, but it doesn’t scale, and it may not last. On-line courses and access can and does address some of these issues, but a more durable approach — one this column has touched on before but rarely examined head-on — is train-the-trainer: developing local instructors who can carry technical knowledge forward long after the original course has ended.

Reach without the recurring cost

Transfer, not just delivery

Quality cannot be an afterthought

The distinction matters. A conventional course transfers skills to a room of technicians for one cycle. A train-the-trainer programme transfers the capability to teach, embedding it within a market rather than importing it each time a new cohort needs training. JBP’s work across ASEAN markets, including Vietnam and Malaysia, has leaned on this principle for years, partnering with local associations and technical institutions rather than treating each engagement as a standalone course. The result is knowledge that stays rooted in-

None of that works if standards slip once the original trainer steps back. Quality oversight is the part of this model that is hardest to get right and easiest to neglect: certifying instructors, refreshing their own knowledge as methods evolve, and building in periodic checks so that what gets taught five years into a programme still matches what gets taught in year one. Working through established local associations and institutions provides a structure for that oversight – a recognised body with a reputation to protect is a

52 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

The practical case is just as strong as the philosophical one. Every course that requires an international trainer to travel carries a cost – in fees, logistics, and time – that limits how often it can run and how many people it can reach. Local trainers remove much of that overhead, making it realistic to reach smaller operators, regional teams and public utility staff who would never justify the expense of bringing in overseas expertise. Accessibility and cost-effectiveness, in this sense, are the same problem viewed from two angles.

stronger guarantor of consistency than an individual trainer working alone. Language and local conditions Two further advantages rarely get enough credit. A local trainer removes the layer of translation and cultural distance that can blunt even welldesigned course content – nuance survives better in a shared first language than through an interpreter. And local trainers can ground the material in conditions specific to their own market: pipe materials, soil types, climate, regulatory regimes and typical asset ages that differ meaningfully between, say, Hanoi and Kuala Lumpur. A model, not a shortcut Train-the-trainer is not a cheaper substitute for proper training; done well, it is a better one – because it builds capacity that compounds rather than resets with every new course. JBP’s ASEAN experience suggests that where local institutions are genuine partners rather than hosts, that capacity tends to outlast the programme that created it.

TUNNELLING

Thames cable tunnel breakthrough achieved 49 days ahead of schedule

Herrenknecht’s Mixshield tunnel boring machine Caroline has completed a 2.2 km tunnel beneath the River Thames for National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade, achieving significant advance rates despite challenging ground conditions and groundwater pressures.

A

major milestone has been reached on National Grid’s Grain to Tilbury project following the successful breakthrough of tunnel boring machine (TBM) Caroline beneath the River Thames, 49 days ahead of schedule. The Herrenknecht Mixshield completed its 2.2 km drive between Tilbury and Gravesend on 27 September 2026, breaking through into the reception shaft after just four and a half months of tunnelling. Delivered by Ferrovial Bemo JV, the new cable tunnel forms part of National Grid’s Great Grid Upgrade, a programme of infrastructure improvements designed to strengthen electricity transmission capacity across England and Wales. The tunnel will accommodate high-voltage cables between Grain and Tilbury, replacing an existing cable 54 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

tunnel that has reached the end of its service life. With an internal diameter of 4 m and an external diameter of 4.5 m, the new tunnel represents a significant engineering undertaking beneath one of the UK’s busiest waterways. High-performance tunnelling beneath the Thames The project required a TBM capable of operating in challenging geological conditions, including chalk and flint, while managing considerable groundwater pressures beneath the river. Herrenknecht supplied a specially configured Mixshield with an excavation diameter of 4,730 mm, an overall length of 108 m and a weight of 464 tonnes. Designed to withstand water pressures of up to 4.5 bar, the machine uses a pressurised excavation chamber

TUNNELLING These capabilities were particularly important given the mixed ground conditions and the tunnel’s curve radius of 350 m. Record advance rates The TBM achieved consistently high advance rates throughout the drive, supported by coordinated tunnel logistics and an efficient separation system. During its most productive month, the tunnelling team installed 712 tunnel rings and achieved 926 m of advance. Peak weekly advance reached 229 m, while the highest daily performance was 41 m of excavation and 31 tunnel rings installed within 24 hours. In total, more than 10,000 tunnel segments and almost 1,700 rings were installed during construction. According to Herrenknecht, the close integration of equipment, materials handling and site operations played an important role in maintaining productivity. “Efficient logistics for the continuous supply of tunnel segments and a high-performance separation plant made it possible to consistently utilize the tunnel boring machine’s high advance capacity,” explained Tim Schellhammer, Project Manager at Herrenknecht. “The Multi Service Vehicle (MSV) supplied by Herrenknecht transported all six segments of a tunnel ring to the machine per trip. There, material for two tunnel rings could be stored on the segment feeder and for another tunnel ring on the rapid unloader. At the same time, the separation plant ensured that the chalk soil, which was transported away in a slurry suspension, was efficiently filtered out and that over 90 percent of the water used could be reused.” to maintain stability at the tunnel face while allowing the remainder of the TBM to operate at atmospheric pressure. A multi-seal system protects the machine against water ingress at depths of approximately 41 m below the Thames. The Mixshield also incorporates a personnel airlock for interventions at the excavation face, enabling workers to adapt to the pressure conditions when access is required for activities such as cutting tool replacement. Additional equipment includes a hydraulic overcut device to support steering adjustments and navigation through curves, together with a drilling rig and telescopic camera for advance ground investigation and inspection of potential obstructions.

The combination of continuous segment supply, slurry treatment and efficient material handling enabled the construction team to maintain high levels of TBM utilisation throughout the drive. A complex breakthrough operation The final breakthrough required careful management of the pressure conditions between the surrounding groundwater and the reception shaft. Rather than undertaking a conventional dry breakthrough, the project team used a wet breakthrough method, with the Gravesend reception shaft completely flooded. This approach helped balance pressure conditions as the TBM entered the shaft, reducing the differential between the surrounding aquifer and the receiving environment. OCTOBER 2026 | TRENCHLESS WORKS 55

TUNNELLING

The successful breakthrough on 27 September marked the completion of the main tunnel drive and represented an important milestone for National Grid, Ferrovial Bemo JV and Herrenknecht. Following breakthrough, work continued to move Caroline into its final position and complete the remaining segment installation. The subsequent programme includes dewatering the reception shaft, removing the TBM and dismantling the equipment before progressing to the next phase of the cable tunnel project. Europe’s largest vertical shaft sinking machine The tunnelling operation was supported by another significant engineering achievement: the construction of the launch and reception shafts using Europe’s largest vertical shaft sinking machine (VSM). Herrenknecht supplied a VSM with a diameter of 15.90 m to construct the 45 m-deep launch shaft at Tilbury and the 48 m-deep reception shaft at Gravesend. The technology is particularly suited to ground conditions with high groundwater levels, allowing excavation and shaft wall construction to progress without the need for extensive groundwater dewatering. The method combines excavation with the construction and controlled lowering of precast shaft wall rings, with sinking speeds of up to 2.7 m per day achievable. Operations are controlled from the surface, eliminating the need for personnel to work inside the shaft during excavation. Herrenknecht also supplied separation equipment and ring construction moulds, together with technical and logistical support for the shaft sinking operations. 56 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026

Using compatible technologies for both shaft construction and tunnel excavation helped simplify interfaces between the two phases of the project, including TBM launch arrangements and underground logistics. Integrated equipment and logistics Beyond the Mixshield itself, Herrenknecht’s supply package included a separation plant, navigation equipment from subsidiary VMT and Multi Service Vehicles for transporting tunnel segments and materials. These systems were designed to work together to maintain consistent excavation performance and minimise interruptions to the tunnelling operation. The separation plant processed excavated chalk and flint transported from the tunnel face in slurry suspension, recovering more than 90% of the process water for reuse. Meanwhile, the Multi Service Vehicles supported the continuous movement of precast concrete segments from the launch shaft to the TBM, helping maintain the pace of ring construction. Ulrich Schaffhauser, Member of the Board of Management at Herrenknecht AG, highlighted the importance of coordinating the various technical systems: “The rapid advance of the cable tunnel under the Thames demonstrates that it pays to closely coordinate as many components, technologies, and services as possible for a project. With our product and service portfolio, we were able to deliver not only a Mixshield tailored to the operating conditions, but also the corresponding separation equipment and tunnel logistics for continuous tunnelling performance.”

TUNNELLING Supporting the great grid upgrade The completion of the Thames Cable Tunnel drive marks an important step in the delivery of National Grid’s wider electricity transmission infrastructure programme. By replacing the existing cable tunnel between Grain and Tilbury, the project will help support the continued operation and development of high-voltage electricity infrastructure serving the region. The successful tunnelling operation also demonstrates the role of integrated mechanised construction technologies in delivering complex underground infrastructure projects beneath challenging urban and environmental settings. With the main tunnel excavation completed ahead of schedule, the project now moves into its subsequent construction phases, bringing the new electricity cable connection another step closer to completion.

The historic town of Mikulov, known for its network of underground cellars and passages, provided an appropriate setting for an event dedicated to underground infrastructure. ISTT thanked CzSTT Chairman Karel Franczyk, Vice Chairman Robert Kostolány and the wider organising team for their hospitality and for delivering another successful national conference.

As ISTT celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026, events such as NO-DIG Mikulov continue to demonstrate the importance of its affiliated societies in encouraging technical knowledge exchange, professional collaboration and the wider adoption of trenchless technologies internationally.

ISTT NEWS

ISTT webinar to explore trenchless vs open-cut sewer construction ISTT webinar to explore trenchless vs open-cut sewer construction A forthcoming ISTT educational webinar will examine the safety, sustainability and whole-life benefits of trenchless gravity sewer installation, drawing on practical experience from a major Australian infrastructure project.

T

he International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT) will host a free educational webinar on 19 November 2026, examining the comparative performance of trenchless and conventional opentrench methods for gravity sewer construction.

Using project data, including gravity sewer installations achieved on gradients as low as 0.13%, the session will examine how modern trenchless methods can minimise surface disruption and reduce construction-related risks while maintaining installation performance.

Titled Trenchless vs Open Trenching for Gravity Sewer Installation: Safety, Sustainability and Whole-of-Life Infrastructure Outcomes, the session will be presented by Stuart Harrison, CEO and Founder of Australia’s OptionX Group.

The webinar will also consider how whole-life assessment frameworks could influence future infrastructure investment decisions, moving beyond traditional comparisons based primarily on initial cost and productivity.

Traditional comparisons between trenchless and opencut construction typically focus on cost, productivity, programme duration and carbon emissions. However, the webinar will explore a wider range of considerations, including worker safety, construction complexity, community disruption and the long-term implications of infrastructure delivery.

Harrison has more than 25 years of experience in trenchless installation across Australia and the United States. He is the inventor of the Axis Guided Boring system, which was licensed internationally to Vermeer, and leads OptionX Group, developer of the AdaptX microtunnelling system.

Drawing on practical project experience, including SA Water’s Munno Para Sewer Trunk Main project in South Australia, Harrison will examine how different construction methodologies influence workforce exposure, interactions between plant and personnel, utility conflicts, traffic disruption and future maintenance requirements. The presentation will also explore the relationship between construction complexity and project risk, considering factors such as workforce size, concurrent activities, material movements and interfaces with the public. A particular focus will be the concept of Permanent Ground Disturbance, which considers the lasting impacts of infrastructure construction on asset owners, road authorities and future generations. 82 TRENCHLESS WORKS | OCTOBER 2026
