This month’s issue arrives at a significant moment for underground infrastructure. Across the UK water sector, major investment commitments are moving closer to delivery, with Ofwat provisionally approving a further £3.4bn of expenditure alongside the £104bn programme already agreed through PR24. For the trenchless sector, the scale of work ahead brings considerable opportunity, but also a renewed focus on how ageing assets can be renewed more efficiently, sustainably and with less disruption. That theme runs throughout this issue. Tom Sangster argues that utilities must move beyond reactive ‘fail and fix’ maintenance towards continuous, risk-based asset renewal, while Richard Swan provides a practical overview of the installation, replacement and rehabilitation methods available to asset owners and project teams. We also look at what trenchless technology makes possible when excavation is difficult or simply not an option. From rehabilitation at the summit of Germany’s Ochsenkopf and within the historic Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, to microtunnelling beneath a railway and the River Sile in Treviso, these projects demonstrate how the right technique can overcome very different engineering and environmental constraints. And, with No-Dig Live now only weeks away, we have expanded our About Our Exhibitors section to provide a preview of the technologies, equipment, demonstrations and technical expertise visitors can expect to see at Stoneleigh from 29 September to 1 October. About our exhibitors → Taken together, the stories in this issue show an industry responding to increasingly complex infrastructure challenges with an equally diverse range of solutions. I hope you enjoy the issue, and I look forward to seeing many of you at No-Dig Live. Austen

RSM and Azuria: The next stage of growth By Trenchless Works

Trenchless Works speaks to Phil Steele of RSM Lining Supplies and Robert Moorhead of Azuria Water Solutions about RSM’s next stage of growth and what the move means for customers, technical capability and the wider trenchless rehabilitation market.

R

SM Lining Supplies’ move into Azuria Water Solutions marks a significant next step for the specialist CIPP materials, equipment and technical support business. While acquisitions are often viewed first through the lens of corporate growth, this deal also offers a useful opportunity to look at the wider direction of the trenchless rehabilitation market and the growing importance of specialist knowledge, customer support and international capability. For Azuria, the addition of RSM strengthens both its product offering and its reach outside North America. Robert Moorhead said the strategic fit was clear, with both businesses sharing similar ambitions and a strong focus on quality. “The addition of RSM expands our product portfolio and geographic footprint outside North America. As trusted companies with quality products, RSM and Azuria are on similar growth trajectories,” he said. 6 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

From RSM’s perspective, the move comes at a point when the business was ready to build on its established position in the UK and continue its international development. Phil Steele said Azuria’s collaborative approach was an important part of the decision, alongside the opportunity to access greater resources while retaining the strengths that have shaped RSM’s growth to date. “RSM was ready for more resources, and we appreciated Azuria’s collaborative approach to adding us to the portfolio. Azuria saw the strength of RSM in the UK market and its desire to continue to grow within the international market,” he said. That balance between continuity and added capability is central to how both businesses are presenting the next stage of growth. For RSM’s customers, suppliers and industry partners, the message is that the core business remains unchanged. The same team, product knowledge and service-led approach will continue, but with the ability to draw on Azuria’s wider resources,

technology and global network. “Our customers, suppliers and industry partners can expect the same high-quality products and service from the RSM team,” said Steele. “While our core business is the same, we can now leverage Azuria’s resources, technology and global network to do more than ever before.” People and technical knowledge have been central to RSM’s development, and Steele said retaining that experience is recognised by both RSM and Azuria as a critical part of the next chapter. The business has built its reputation around specialist support, product understanding and close working relationships with customers and suppliers, all of which remain important as it enters this new phase. “We continue to make key investments in our people and the business, which helps us retain key customer- and supplier-focused talent,” he said. “We have always been committed to going above and beyond in the UK market and remain focused on investing in the company’s continued growth.”

The value of that expertise is particularly important in a sector where product performance, installation knowledge, training and support can have a direct impact on project outcomes. As trenchless rehabilitation is used across a broader range of gravity and pressure pipeline applications, customers are increasingly looking for more than materials alone. They need technical confidence, reliable guidance and solutions that can respond to more demanding site conditions and network challenges. Moorhead said RSM’s existing knowledge is already beginning to complement the wider expertise available within Azuria and Insituform. “RSM has deep product expertise, and we’ve already begun working together through education and cross-training,” he said. For Azuria, that exchange of knowledge sits within a broader focus on technology and continuous improvement. “Azuria is a tech-enabled solutions company. internally, drive continuous improvements in safety, quality and speed of projects. Azuria remains on the cutting edge of technology in our industry because we continue to make real investments in new ways to better solve customer problems,” he added. The acquisition also reflects the increasing maturity of the trenchless rehabilitation sector at a time when water companies, contractors and asset owners face growing environmental, operational and regulatory pressure. Trenchless methods have long offered a less disruptive alternative to traditional excavation, but their role is becoming more strategic as networks age and performance expectations increase. Steele said customers continue to feel environmental pressures, while trenchless rehabilitation remains a preferred alternative to dig and replace. One area where this is particularly evident is infiltration. High levels of groundwater entering sewer networks can place additional strain on pumping stations, increase energy usage and affect wastewater treatment efficiency. For asset owners and contractors, addressing infiltration at source is becoming an increasingly important part of improving network performance. “Many water asset owners battle inflow and infiltration but aren’t sure how to tackle the issue,” said Steele. “Azuria has a service and product portfolio that will allow us to offer more options to the market than ever before.” Steele added that RSM sees reducing network infiltration as a critical part of responding to the UK’s current environmental and operational pressures. The company’s WRc-certified CP655-tested and CP308-tested epoxy resin systems have been developed to support 8 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

leak-tight, long-lasting rehabilitation in challenging installation conditions, including wet environments. By strengthening the structural integrity of pipe sections and lateral connections, RSM believes these systems can help contractors and water authorities target infiltration at source while supporting more environmentally conscious trenchless repair strategies. Looking ahead, both businesses see the next three to five years being shaped by collaboration, customer value and continued investment. Moorhead said the cultural fit between Azuria and RSM was apparent early in the process, with discussions around working together developing naturally. “It was immediately obvious that Azuria and RSM have a great culture fit. We’re like-minded, fierce competitors, but initial discussions of collaboration were natural,” he said. “We are confident that our customers will receive more value and our team members will have access to more opportunities as we continue to work together.” For the wider market, the move highlights how trenchless rehabilitation is continuing to develop as a technically sophisticated and strategically important part of water infrastructure delivery. As customer expectations increase and network challenges become more complex, the combination of specialist expertise, product development, training and international resources is likely to play an increasingly important role. For RSM, the message is one of continuity with added capability. For Azuria, it is a strategic addition to its wider water infrastructure platform. For customers, the focus remains on practical support, technical confidence and trenchless solutions that help address some of the most pressing challenges facing underground infrastructure.

Ofwat provisionally approves £3.4bn for additional water infrastructure investment Further investment across 13 water companies could accelerate infrastructure upgrades, unlock new housing and commercial development, strengthen long-term resilience and address emerging drinking-water quality requirements.

O

fwat has provisionally approved £3.4bn of additional investment for the water sector, opening the way for projects designed to improve infrastructure, support economic and housing growth and deliver better environmental outcomes. The funding sits alongside the £104bn investment programme agreed through the 2024 Price Review and reflects additional costs or requirements that were uncertain when the PR24 final determinations were published in December 2024. Of the proposed £3.4bn package, approximately £1.2bn is intended to safeguard services and assets for future generations. A further £477m will support growth-related infrastructure, including additional capacity required for housing and data-centre development, while £34m will help companies respond to strengthened requirements concerning PFAS, commonly known as “forever chemicals”, within drinking-water supplies. The draft decisions have been made through Ofwat’s new Cost Change Process. Introduced as part of PR24, the mechanism allows water companies to seek funding for specified changes between formal price reviews, rather than postponing necessary work until the next review in 2029. 10 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

This flexibility could be particularly important as water companies face the combined challenge of delivering their existing investment programmes while responding to population growth, development pressures, environmental regulation and emerging risks to water quality. Projects provisionally supported through the process include new water infrastructure by United Utilities to enable data-centre development in East Manchester. Anglian Water would receive additional investment to address growth pressures and create further capacity at Flag Fen in Peterborough, while increased capacity at Newquay Wastewater Treatment Works would support residents and the area’s expanding visitor economy. The package also allows companies to bring forward work arising from additional Drinking Water Inspectorate requirements relating to PFAS. Wessex Water, for example, is expected to advance improvements at one of its water-treatment sites that had originally been planned for the 2030–35 investment period. Helen Campbell, executive director for delivery at Ofwat, said the process would strengthen companies’ ability to proceed with important projects without unnecessary delay.

INDUSTRY INSIGHT

“The newly agreed funding will help unlock muchneeded new housing development and boost business growth across a range of sectors, as well as improving drinking-water quality,” she said. Ofwat received requests totalling £4.3bn from 13 water companies. Approximately £752m was judged to be outside the agreed scope of the process or insufficiently supported by evidence. Of the £3.533bn considered to fall within scope, 96%, or £3.390bn, has been provisionally allowed. A further £143m was rejected because of gaps within company cost estimates or the options analysis supporting the applications. Some of the expenditure that has been provisionally approved also remains conditional upon companies supplying additional information before the final decisions are made. Ofwat said the submissions had been tested to establish whether the proposed projects represented the correct intervention, delivered value for money and had not already been funded through existing allowances. Price Control Deliverables will be attached to approved requests, setting out the outcomes and outputs companies are expected to achieve. Funding can be returned to customers where the agreed work is not delivered.

Depending on the individual project and the company’s progress against its wider investment programme, some expenditure may be recovered through customer bills before the next Price Review. Ofwat said these decisions would be taken on a case-by-case basis, with consideration given to cost-of-living pressures and the funding companies already hold. For the trenchless and underground infrastructure supply chain, the additional package provides another indication of the scale and urgency of the work now developing across the UK water sector. Increasing treatment and network capacity, protecting existing assets and enabling new development will require water companies and their delivery partners to identify solutions that can be implemented efficiently while limiting disruption to customers, communities and the environment. The announcement also comes ahead of No-Dig Live 2026, where representatives from Ofwat have registered to attend alongside water companies, contractors, consultants and technology providers from across the underground infrastructure sector. The draft determinations are now open for public consultation until 5pm on 24 September 2026. Ofwat expects to publish its final determinations in December. AUGUST 2026 | TRENCHLESS WORKS 11

Over the infrastructure cliff Ageing networks are deteriorating faster than asset owners can renew them. Tom Sangster argues that only continuous, risk-based asset management, with trenchless technologies at its core, can prevent escalating service failures.

By Tom Sangster, Managing Director, Downley Consultants

G

lobal warming is often treated as a future problem: 2050, perhaps 2035, but still safely distant. Anyone living through the extremes of recent European summers knows otherwise. It is here now, and action is already overdue. The same is true of the infrastructure cliff. The term has been used by the Local Government Association of Queensland in Australia, but the condition it describes is neither local nor distant. Across the world, asset owners are operating networks that are well beyond their intended service life, while renewal and rehabilitation programmes remain too limited to arrest the decline in condition and performance. Recent supply interruptions in the south-east of England and two catastrophic breaks of Calgary’s Bearspaw South Feeder Main show that we are already teetering on the edge. If the problem is continuous deterioration, the response must also be continuous. The question is not whether networks should be repaired, but whether asset owners will continue reacting to failures or adopt a renewal strategy that stays ahead of them. 12 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

Infrastructure maintenance can broadly be approached in three ways. The simplest, most common and least effective is reactive repair or emergency workaround: wait for a failure, fix it quickly and then repeat the cycle. A more enlightened approach is a planned programme of asset renovation designed to achieve defined objectives, such as reducing non-revenue water or inflow and infiltration, improving water quality and strengthening service reliability. That is certainly an improvement on ‘fail and fix’, and it can be considerably more cost-effective. However, it is still limited by a defined objective and end point: once the immediate target has been met, the job is treated as done. It remains a piecemeal response, generally driven by problems that have already occurred. The infrastructure cliff cannot be solved once and considered solved; this approach will not keep pace with assets that continue to deteriorate. Asset owners therefore need to take the third option: a continuous, rolling programme of renewal driven by risk assessment and supported by long-term planning and budget provision. They must also accept that the

INDUSTRY INSIGHT

Tom Sangster, Managing Director, Downley Consultants

cycle will continue. Ageing infrastructure has to be managed, rather than ‘solved’. This requires a change of mindset, sustained investment and the political will to fund work whose full benefits extend far beyond a single budget or electoral cycle. Trenchless technologies can make that case easier. In suitable applications they allow budgets to stretch further, reduce disruption for the communities funding the work and lessen environmental impact. The financial point is critical: investment can be used more efficiently when trenchless methods form part of a planned, long-term asset-management programme. By contrast, piecemeal initiatives combined with an automatic reliance on open-cut replacement will struggle to keep pace. To paraphrase Heiko Manzke of Primus Line Australia, utilities that treat rehabilitation as a core renewal tool will get through this; those still defaulting to dig and replace risk running out of budget before they run out of pipe. Climate change is placing water supplies under growing pressure at the same time as large volumes of treated water continue to be lost through leakage. Against that

backdrop, the five-year horizon implicit in the UK’s asset management planning periods - and mirrored by electoral cycles internationally - is too short. Sustained asset management offers the most cost-effective route to maintaining service levels for customers and communities while networks age and pressure on supply increases. The argument must reach the decision-makers who control policy and budgets: utilities, regulators, local authorities and national governments. They need to understand not only the scale of the problem but also the practicality of the solution. Merely raising the alarm will not be enough. Politicians and funding bodies are reluctant to confront problems when they believe no deliverable solution exists. The business case for continuous asset management must therefore be built around solutions. Trenchless technologies are a major part of that case, but the larger message is the change in policy and strategy they make possible. It is time for the industry to get behind that message and make the case locally, wherever in the world it operates. Otherwise, over the cliff we go. AUGUST 2026 | TRENCHLESS WORKS 13

Barhale to lead network resilience improvements at Walton-on-the-Naze

An £18 million investment in stormwater management infrastructure at Walton-on-the-Naze will bring essential additional protection to the Essex coast in the event of severe weather conditions.

F

orming part of Anglian Water’s ongoing programme to improve resilience within its network, the scheme involves the construction of a new 5,000m³ storm tank and associated tunnelling works adjacent to the existing Walton-on-the-Naze terminal pumping station. Work will be delivered through Anglian Water’s @one Alliance, the strategic delivery vehicle for Anglian Water’s Integrated Main Works programme, with civil engineering, MEICA and infrastructure specialist Barhale acting in the role of principal contractor for the scheme. The new storm tank will feature an innovative “pill shaped” design to avoid the course of an existing aquifer and sewer and will be built using a diaphragm wall with excavation from within. It will be connected to an existing storm tank through a new 84m long, 1200mm pipeline which will be constructed using concrete jacking pipes through microtunnelling. Dan Ledger, Barhale’s Project Manager, explained that the Environment Agency and Anglian Water had

conducted investigations and tracer studies identifying the need for additional storage. “It would help to ensure that the stormwater capacity at the sewage pumping station was not overwhelmed in extreme weather conditions,” he said. “The upgrades will provide a major boost to site storage capacity, helping to protect the environment and bathing water quality. “The nature of the site, particularly the presence of the aquifer, has presented some interesting design challenges and construction constraints. We have responded by developing the innovative tank design and by using a diaphragm wall construction which will minimise the size of the excavation area.” Completion is scheduled for November 2027. Anglian Water’s @one Alliance is formed of eight partner organisations: Anglian Water, Balfour Beatty, Barhale, Binnies, Mott MacDonald Bentley, MWH Treatment, Skanska and Sweco.

Severn Trent to launch market engagement for up to £25bn capital design and delivery frameworks Severn Trent Water is preparing to launch a pre-market engagement notice to initiate early engagement with the supply chain for a new generation of capital delivery framework(s), representing up to £25bn of investment over the next 8–15 years across the Midlands.

T

he framework(s) will act as Severn Trent’s primary commercial and delivery vehicle, supporting the delivery of future regulatory outcomes across AMP9, AMP10 and AMP11, while providing a flexible platform to respond to evolving customer, environmental and resilience requirements. The programme forms part of England’s Big Upgrade: the largest investment in water and wastewater infrastructure for a generation. Through this investment, Severn Trent aims to improve resilience, meet growing demand, protect the environment and deliver better outcomes for customers and communities across the region. The notice forms part of Severn Trent’s ongoing procurement and market engagement activities in support of its previously communicated long-term investment programme and does not represent the announcement of additional investment. In parallel with the capital delivery framework procurement, Severn Trent will also be undertaking the Design Services tender process. This is a critical and integrated component of the overall project lifecycle, ensuring a joined-up approach to design, delivery and supply chain collaboration from project inception through to construction. 16 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

Procurement is expected to commence in early 2027, with the framework(s) designed to engage a diverse range of partners; from major international contractors to regional and local SMEs; ensuring the capability, capacity and innovation required to deliver one of the most significant infrastructure investment programmes in the UK water sector. The framework(s) will be structured to support all AMP9 transition activities and associated expenditure, enabling continuity of delivery as Severn Trent moves between regulatory periods. The approach will also ensure that the majority of AMP8 investment continues to be delivered through incumbent partners, maintaining programme momentum, preserving critical capability, and providing stability for customers and the supply chain during the transition. As part of this engagement, potential partners will be invited to attend a dedicated market engagement event, where they can learn more about Severn Trent’s plans, pipeline and evolving commercial approach. Organisations will be able to express interest and follow updates via the pre-market engagement process. Severn Trent is keen to work collaboratively with the market to help shape its future delivery model, exploring

NEWS approaches that support earlier supplier involvement, innovation, improved outcomes and long-term value creation for customers, communities and the environment. The new framework model will build on the success of Severn Trent’s existing delivery approach, strengthening long-term partnerships, encouraging early supplier involvement and advanced procurement, and supporting investment in skills, innovation and capacity across the region. Paul Baxter, Capital Delivery Director at Severn Trent, said: “This is a major opportunity for the market to partner with Severn Trent on one of the UK’s most ambitious water infrastructure programmes. We’ve achieved strong results with our existing partners, and we’re now looking to build on that success through a more integrated and collaborative delivery model that creates better outcomes for customers and communities. Through this framework, we are creating a long-term platform that will support delivery across AMP9, AMP10 and AMP11, while providing the flexibility, resilience and innovation needed to meet future challenges.” Daniel Foster, Head of Capital Commercial at Severn Trent, added:

“Our ambition is to create a high-performing supplier ecosystem that combines the strengths of established partners with the innovation and capability of new market entrants. The framework will support the AMP8 to AMP9 transition, provide certainty for the supply chain and create opportunities for suppliers to invest in people, skills and innovation over the long term. We want this to be more than a procurement exercise. We want to create a platform for collaboration, regional growth and lasting value that delivers benefits for customers, communities and the wider Midlands economy.” The framework(s) will be structured to promote long-term strategic relationships, with performance, capability and capacity central to future work allocation, providing greater certainty for suppliers and supporting the development of regional skills and supply chain resilience. Through this programme, Severn Trent aims to deliver essential infrastructure while also creating lasting economic, environmental and social benefits across the Midlands. There will be UK2 notices issued to the market shortly, which will set out full details of the forthcoming market engagement day.

ENGLAND RUGBY INTERNATIONAL ELLIS GENGE LAUNCHES DRAINAGE BUSINESS

P

FD Solutions has expanded into drainage and no-dig repair services, with the new company already ordering a second Superjet van-mounted jetting unit. England and Bristol Bears prop Ellis Genge has launched drainage company PFD Solutions with his business partner, former Leicester Tigers winger Sam Aspland-Robinson. The Bristol-based venture follows the establishment of a groundworks business in 2024, which has since secured work with South Gloucestershire Council and domestic customers across the region. PFD Solutions has now expanded its operations to provide high-pressure water jetting, CCTV inspection, nodig drain repairs, excavation and waste-removal services. Before entering the drainage market, Genge sought advice from established industry professionals, including Wayne Earnshaw of Lanes Group and Lee Bray of Bristolbased Maintain A Drain. Following recommendations from within the sector, Genge and Aspland-Robinson approached Superjet to discuss the equipment required for the new operation. After an onsite demonstration and consultation with Superjet representatives Gareth Jones and Andrew Holt, the company selected a VP35P van-mounted jetting unit. The VP35P delivers 200 bar at 55 litres per minute and incorporates a hydraulic hose reel and remote-control operation. It is intended to support both domestic and commercial drainage work. PFD Solutions recently took delivery of its first unit and has already placed an order for a second. 22 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

“We’ve been really happy with it on both domestic and commercial jobs,” Genge said. “We’ve already ordered a second unit.” The company’s CCTV inspection capability covers pipework ranging from small-bore systems to mains measuring up to 1,800mm in diameter. It is also working with main contractors and supporting Section 104 sewer adoption schemes across South West England. PFD Solutions intends to continue expanding its capabilities as it works towards becoming a complete drainage services provider.

TRENCHLESS METHODS

IS THERE AN ALTERNATIVE TO DIGGING?

A practical guide to trenchless installation, replacement and rehabilitation methods By Richard Swan Associates Ltd

A

s No-Dig Live 2026 approaches, it is timely to consider the range of trenchless technologies available for installing new pipes, ducts and cables, replacing existing assets and rehabilitating pipelines that still have a useful role to play. The question is no longer simply whether there is an alternative to digging, but which alternative is appropriate for the asset, the ground conditions and the required outcome. Trenchless methods generally fall into three practical groups. New-installation techniques create a new alignment between access points. Online replacement methods install a new pipe along the route of an existing one. Renovation and repair techniques retain all or part of the host pipe while restoring performance, structural capacity or watertightness. The boundaries between those groups can be technical, and terminology should be used with care, but this framework provides a useful starting point. 24 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

Whichever method is considered, selection must begin with a proper investigation. Ground conditions, groundwater levels, the condition and material of the existing pipe, third-party services, access, required capacity, environmental constraints and the consequence of failure all influence what is feasible. Typical diameter and drive-length ranges are helpful for screening, but they are not substitutes for systemspecific engineering and competent design. Installing new utilities Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is one of the most versatile new-installation methods. A steerable drill head creates a pilot bore, which is enlarged by reaming before the product pipe is pulled into place. The ability to steer and create curved alignments makes HDD particularly useful beneath roads, rivers and railways, subject to suitable ground conditions and control of drilling fluids.

TRENCHLESS METHODS a casing and is normally used in predictable ground above the water table. Pipe ramming uses a pneumatic hammer to drive a steel casing and can tolerate mixed ground, cobbles and boulders, although it offers little or no steering once the drive has begun. For smaller services over short distances, impact moling displaces compressible soil to form a bore between small access pits. Guided boring extends the straight-line principle by using a guidance system where line and level must be controlled more closely. Quick comparison: new-installation methods

Pipe jacking is a tunnelling method where the pipe being installed is used to support the surrounding ground during the tunnelling operation. Sections of pipe are lowered into the launching shaft and then pushed forward, using jacks located in the launch shaft, as the tunnel advances. Microtunnelling is used where accuracy, face support and settlement control are critical. It is a remotely controlled form of pipe jacking in which a microtunnel boring machine excavates while pipes are advanced from a launch shaft. Mechanical or fluid pressure supports the excavation face, making the method suitable for deep sewers, long drives and challenging groundwater or ground-pressure conditions. Auger boring and pipe ramming provide robust alternatives for comparatively straight crossings. Auger boring removes spoil through a rotating auger inside

Replacing a pipe on its existing alignment Online replacement can be especially valuable in congested utility corridors where space for a new alignment is limited. Pipe bursting is the most established approach. A bursting head fractures a brittle host pipe and displaces the fragments into the surrounding ground while pulling in a replacement pipe, commonly polyethylene. Depending on the ground, cover and proximity of other services, the replacement may be upsized by one or more nominal diameters. Static, pneumatic and hydraulic bursting systems are available. The choice affects the forces and vibration transferred to the ground, but all bursting projects require careful assessment of cover depth, ground movement and nearby utilities. Existing service connections must be located, excavated where necessary and reconnected, with temporary supply arrangements AUGUST 2026 | TRENCHLESS WORKS 25

considered before work begins. Ductile sections, repair clamps and other fittings that cannot be fractured may also require local intervention.

Discrete Sliplining

Pipe splitting serves a related purpose where the host material is ductile, such as steel, ductile iron or plastic. Cutter blades split the existing pipe longitudinally before an expander opens the bore and the new pipe is drawn in. Both methods retain the existing corridor, but neither should be treated as universally non-disruptive: access pits, service reconnections and risk controls remain integral to delivery. Renovating and repairing existing pipes Where the existing alignment can be retained, renovation techniques can restore hydraulic performance, structural capacity or resistance to leakage without wholesale replacement. The current ISO 11295:2026 framework defines and classifies families of renovation and trenchless replacement techniques. It also makes clear that the designer remains responsible for selecting and designing the appropriate system for the pipeline and performance required. Sliplining and close-fit systems Continuous sliplining inserts a new pipe with a smaller outside diameter into the host pipe by pushing or pulling it from an access point. Polyethylene, polypropylene, PVC-U and GRP systems may be used, depending on the application. The annular space is commonly grouted to restrain the new pipe and transfer loads. Although internal diameter is reduced, the hydraulic effect may be partly offset by the smoother bore of the new pipe. 26 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

Controlled access at both ends Discrete sliplining uses short, jointed pipe sections introduced through a manhole or access excavation and pushed or winched into position. Flexible sliplining variants can be introduced through existing manholes, reducing the need for a large lead-in trench in suitable gravity sewer applications. Close-fit lining minimises the annular space and preserves more of the available cross-section. Diedrawn, rolldown and fold-and-form systems temporarily reduce or reshape a polyethylene liner for insertion. Once in position, the pipe is reverted towards its original geometry using pressure or natural recovery so that it fits closely against the host pipe. Inserted hose and CIPP Inserted-hose systems use a reinforced flexible liner supplied on a drum. The hose is pulled into the host pipe, inflated to conform to the internal surface and terminated with specialist fittings. These systems are particularly relevant to pressure applications, including rising mains and water mains. Products used in contact

TRENCHLESS METHODS

with public drinking-water supplies must meet the applicable regulatory approval requirements; in England this includes the Regulation 31 framework administered by the Drinking Water Inspectorate. Cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) uses a resin-impregnated carrier that is winched or inverted into the pipe and cured using hot water, steam, ultraviolet light, LED or an ambient process. Once cured, laterals are reopened where required. The liner may be designed to work with the host pipe or to provide the required structural performance independently, subject to the chosen system and design. For gravity sewer work, the UK Water Industry’s WIS 4-34-07 Issue 1, published in October 2025, covers leaktightness testing of CIPP lining systems. WIS 4-34-06 covers localised cured-in-place sewer repairs, although it is currently identified by the Standards Board as an ageing specification. Designers and specifiers should therefore check the latest applicable documents rather than rely on legacy references. Local repairs and surface-applied linings Where deterioration is isolated, a local repair may avoid lining an entire pipeline. Resin-impregnated glass-fibre patches can be wrapped around an inflatable packer, positioned at the defect and cured in place. Larger pillow packers enable work in large or non-circular pipes, while mechanical point repairs use stainless-steel clamps and seals or impregnated matting to restore local integrity or re-round a deformed pipe. Surface-applied systems include sprayed, spin-cast, trowelled or panel-based linings for pipes, manholes, chambers and tunnels. Preparation is critical: active infiltration must be controlled, cracks and voids repaired, and the substrate cleaned to provide a sound surface.

Flexible sliplining

inappropriate where inadvertent drilling-fluid returns cannot be controlled. Pipe bursting can create valuable additional capacity, but only where ground movement and adjacent services are properly understood. A closefit liner may preserve hydraulic area, while CIPP or an inserted hose may offer the most practical route where access, bends or pressure duty dictate the solution. The strongest projects begin with the required outcome rather than a preferred product. Asset condition, structural need, hydraulic capacity, access, ground risk, environmental impact, available standards and whole-life cost should be assessed together. With that discipline, trenchless technology is not simply an alternative to digging: it becomes a toolbox from which the most appropriate intervention can be selected.

Epoxy, polyurea and polyurethane systems provide different combinations of adhesion, chemical resistance, flexibility, moisture tolerance and curing speed. Cementitious and calcium-aluminate mortars are widely used to rebuild and protect sewer structures, while silicate-modified, hybrid and geopolymer systems offer options for damp, chemically aggressive or large-diameter environments. Material selection should follow an assessment of substrate condition, exposure, structural duty and the time available before return to service. Choosing the right intervention No single trenchless method is the answer to every project. HDD may be ideal for a long river crossing but

When digging is not an option Trenchless sewer rehabilitation in extraordinary locations - from a UNESCO World Heritage Site to the summit of the Ochsenkopf From protected parkland to a 1,024 m mountain summit, two German projects demonstrate how flexible liner systems can preserve ageing infrastructure where access, heritage and environmental constraints leave little room for conventional excavation.

PIPELINE REHABILITATION

S

ome sewer rehabilitation projects take place in residential streets; others beneath busy roads or industrial sites. Occasionally, however, it is the location itself that presents the greatest engineering challenge. At 1,024 m, the Ochsenkopf is the second-highest peak in the Fichtelgebirge mountains of Upper Franconia and one of northern Bavaria’s best-known visitor destinations. Thousands of hikers, mountain bikers and winter-sports enthusiasts travel to its summit each year, drawn by the observation tower and the prominent transmission mast. The headwaters of the White Main and Fichtelnaab also rise on its slopes, close to the European watershed. What visitors do not see is that the summit’s drainage and building infrastructure is subject to the same ageing process as any urban network. Pipes and downpipes still need to be inspected, maintained and renewed - but at a site where access is difficult, working space is restricted and disruption must be kept to a minimum. This is where trenchless rehabilitation comes into its own. By renewing a pipe within the existing asset, liner systems can avoid the extensive excavation associated with open-cut replacement. In a sensitive landscape or heavily visited public space, that can reduce both the physical impact of the work and the time for which the site is affected. A heritage precedent The recent Ochsenkopf scheme follows an earlier Bodenbender-supported project at Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel. Completed in 2020, that project showed how far trenchless techniques had moved beyond conventional urban sewer applications.

Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe’s most important historic parks. Several kilometres of drainage pipe required rehabilitation beneath a landscape of historic buildings, protected features and centuries-old trees. The work had to maintain visitor access wherever possible, avoid damage to the established tree stock and return the ageing pipework to reliable long-term service. Swietelsky-Faber Kanalsanierung GmbH carried out the rehabilitation using trenchless methods, including pipe liners and resin systems supplied by Bodenbender GmbH. The liner specification was adjusted to suit the condition and position of each section, as well as its diameter changes and bends. As a result, substantial lengths of the existing drainage network could be rehabilitated without the widespread earthworks that would have disrupted the historic grounds. The challenge at the Ochsenkopf was very different. Here there were no centuries-old trees or protected park structures immediately above the pipeline. Instead, the team had to contend with an exposed summit location, restricted access, small manholes, changes in diameter, high summer temperatures and a tightly defined programme. Ninety-two metres in four days Drechsler Umweltschutz GmbH & Co. KG was appointed to deliver the work. The scheme covered approximately 92 m of DN 150 pipe across three lengths of 22 m, 54 m and 16 m. At the client’s request, the liner was installed through an intermediate manhole, connecting the 54 m and 16 m sections as one continuous rehabilitated run. In practical terms, the original three sections were therefore completed as two liner installations. The entire programme took four days.

At locations where open excavation would be disruptive, environmentally damaging or simply impractical, trenchless rehabilitation is increasingly becoming the preferred approach rather than a specialist alternative.

Needle-felt liners were installed with Bodenbender epoxy resin systems and the company’s reusable AIRBAGLINER® calibration hose. The ability to match the resin, liner and installation parameters to the site conditions was particularly important on a project where there was little margin for delay or reworking.

through the intermediate manhole and continued into the second section, incorporating the manhole within the renewed pipeline rather than terminating and restarting the liner on either side. The result was a continuous rehabilitated length across two former pipe runs, completed without excavation.

The site dictated the method

Heat adds another variable

Two constraints shaped the installation sequence. The first was an end manhole just 60 cm in diameter, with a continuous channel and virtually no space for conventional working. The second was a diameter transition from DN 150 to DN 125 within the shorter end section.

On the day of the longest installation, the temperature reached 34°C. For a reactive epoxy resin system, that matters: higher ambient temperatures accelerate the reaction and reduce the available working time. Across a combined 70 m liner, any significant loss of working time could affect the whole installation.

The first needle-felt liner was installed with an open end and cured using the reusable AIRBAGLINER® and steam box. This approach provided the flexibility needed to accommodate both the confined manhole and the change in diameter.

Drechsler Umweltschutz selected Bodenbender EP 170 for this section and prepared it for the conditions on site. Before use, the resin was cooled in an ice bath, extending the available working window and allowing the team to install the liner in a controlled manner.

For the second installation, the 54 m and 16 m pipe lengths were treated as a single run. The liner was guided

system was used for that installation, bringing the fourday rehabilitation programme to a close. It is this level of site-specific preparation that often separates a design on paper from a successful installation. The liner, resin system, calibration hose, curing method and working sequence cannot be considered in isolation. On an exposed and constrained site, they must operate as a complete system while giving the delivery team enough flexibility to respond to the actual temperature, geometry and access conditions. Preserving assets in difficult places Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe and the Ochsenkopf appear to have little in common. One is a UNESCO-listed landscape defined by historic structures and ancient trees; the other is a mountain-top site shaped by altitude, restricted access, confined manholes and extreme summer heat. Yet the central requirement was the same: preserve the existing infrastructure while minimising the impact of the work on its surroundings.

At locations where open excavation would be disruptive, environmentally damaging or simply impractical, trenchless rehabilitation is increasingly becoming the preferred approach rather than a specialist alternative. It can shorten the construction programme, protect valuable structures and landscapes, and extend the service life of existing assets without rebuilding them from the surface down. For Bodenbender, projects such as these are also a realworld test of system compatibility. Reliable rehabilitation depends not on one component operating under ideal conditions, but on the liner, resin, calibration hose and curing process working together under the conditions that actually exist on site. Extraordinary locations do not necessarily demand extraordinary methods. They demand proven systems, experienced installers and enough technical flexibility to adapt the method to the job - not the job to the method.

the development of process specifications and accreditation training. This combination of technical expertise, long-serving employees and collaboration with experienced installation partners has become central to the company’s international approach.

Primus Line® systems can now be found across more than 60 countries, supported by the company’s international branches in Australia, the USA and Canada. For owner and managing director Werner Rädlinger, the anniversary represents an important point in the company’s development: “We have achieved what many did not think we were capable of: we are now an international brand,” he says.

Quality assurance remains another important area of focus. The Primus Line system is subject to controls throughout the manufacturing process, beginning with the raw materials and continuing through production to final dispatch. The company plans to continue investing in manufacturing, product development, testing and certification, while reinforcing quality standards during installation.

The company’s growth has also changed the way it works with customers and installation partners. While Rädlinger Primus Line initially operated primarily as a product supplier, it now increasingly positions itself as a technical and service partner throughout the planning and delivery of rehabilitation projects.

One of the greatest challenges during the past 25 years, according to Rädlinger, has been establishing trenchless pressure pipe rehabilitation as a recognised option among asset owners and project decision-makers. Although acceptance of trenchless methods has grown considerably, the company believes there is still work to be done in demonstrating their performance and advantages in suitable applications.

Its support can include engineering, feasibility studies, project implementation, site supervision, 32 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

Recent projects illustrate the scale the technology can now accommodate. In spring 2026, one of the longest installations in the company’s history was completed within a protected nature area in Denmark. A 2,600 m Primus Line liner was pulled into a sewer rising main in a single section, allowing the pressure pipeline to be rehabilitated while limiting intervention within the environmentally sensitive location. The Denmark project reflects the journey made since the first Primus Line installations more than two decades ago: from a newly developed proprietary system to a rehabilitation method capable of supporting complex pressure pipeline projects around the world. Looking ahead, Rädlinger has set out an ambitious objective for the next stage of the company’s development: “The whole world should recognise that Primus Line® is the go-to solution for pressure pipe rehabilitation.” Further information about the anniversary and interviews with long-serving members of the Rädlinger Primus Line team are available at www.primusline.com.

followed by a separate carrier pipe, the SteinzeugKeramo system was direct-jacked into position and now forms the permanent sewer.

The new pipeline had to pass beneath both an active railway and the River Sile at a depth of approximately 11m. With high groundwater and little tolerance for surface disruption, the project required a tunnelling method capable of maintaining ground stability while limiting settlement beneath sensitive infrastructure.

A slurry-supported microtunnelling system was selected to install the new sewer. The method maintains continuous support at the excavation face while excavated material is carried away in the slurry circuit. This provides a controlled means of advancing the installation and helps limit movement at the surface – a critical consideration beneath both the live rail track and the river.

Approximately 400 m of DN 800 KERA.Drive vitrified clay jacking pipe was installed using slurry-supported microtunnelling. Rather than using an outer casing 34 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

It also removed the construction stage associated with inserting a carrier pipe after completion of the drive, while retaining the structural capacity required for pipe jacking. Material performance below ground Steinzeug-Keramo’s KERA.Drive jacking pipe was specified for its structural capacity, resistance to corrosion and aggressive wastewater environments, and watertight joint performance under external pressure. These characteristics were particularly relevant to a pipeline exposed to high groundwater and potential infiltration throughout both construction and service.

The pipe had to perform two distinct roles. During installation, each section formed part of the jacking string and transmitted the forces needed to advance the pipeline. Once installed, the same pipe became the finished sewer, carrying flow while resisting external ground and groundwater loads. Despite the combination of load conditions, the pipes remained well within their performance limits, delivering a robust and future-proof sewer system with a prolonged expected service life. Installation with minimal excavations along the route When projects involve multiple simultaneous load cases, material selection becomes more than a procurement decision. It becomes an engineering decision. The project illustrates the value of considering complex load criteria and boundary conditions, coupled with delivering long-term asset performance without excessive disruption to the local area. Projects like Treviso demonstrate that successful trenchless delivery depends not only on the installation method, but also on selecting a pipe system capable of performing reliably long after construction is complete.

Europe’s largest TBM selected for Lower Thames Crossing

Herrenknecht’s 16.4 m variable-density machine will drive both bores of the UK’s longest road tunnel

A tunnel boring machine of unprecedented scale is being designed for the Lower Thames Crossing. Measuring 16.4 m in diameter, approximately 120 m long and weighing more than 5,000 tonnes, the Herrenknecht machine will excavate two 4.2 km road tunnels beneath the Thames. A machine on a different scale National Highways confirmed in July that Herrenknecht had been selected to build the TBM for the Lower Thames Crossing. At 16.4 m in diameter, it will be the largest tunnelling machine yet used in Europe and the third largest in the world. Herrenknecht says it will also be the largest machine manufactured at its Schwanau headquarters and the largest Variable Density TBM it has produced. Each completed tunnel will accommodate three lanes of 70 mph traffic, with the twin bores forming the 2.6-mile tunnelled section of the new A122 route between Kent and Essex. The cutterhead will be the largest accessible cutting wheel yet built by Herrenknecht, with inspection and maintenance access integrated into the design. Variable density for changing ground The machine has been specified as a Variable Density TBM to manage the water table and the changing geology beneath the Thames. The alignment will pass through contrasting ground conditions including clay and chalk, reaching depths of up to 60 m below the river. 36 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

Variable-density technology allows the excavation chamber and spoil transport system to be adapted as ground conditions change. The machine can operate with different support modes, giving the tunnelling team greater control of face pressure and material handling across the transition between cohesive and more permeable ground. Herrenknecht is now working with the Bouygues Travaux Publics Murphy Joint Venture on the detailed design. The joint venture will buy and operate the machine as delivery partner for the tunnels and approaches. One machine, two bores Rather than procuring a separate TBM for each bore, the project plans to use one machine for both drives. It will begin tunnelling near the Port of Tilbury in Thurrock in 2028 and complete the first drive towards Kent. The TBM will then be turned through a planned U-turn configuration before excavating the parallel return drive. Using one machine for both tunnels reduces the specialist plant that must be manufactured and mobilised. National Highways says the approach will lower cost and reduce construction carbon.

Before excavation begins, the TBM will be manufactured in Germany and transported to the UK in sections. Its major components will travel by sea and up the Thames to the Port of Tilbury, where the machine will be assembled for launch.

The twin tunnels will form the central structure of the 23 km Lower Thames Crossing route, linking the A2 and M2 in Kent with the A13 and M25 in Essex. At 4.2 km, the tunnel will be the longest road tunnel in the UK and more than twice the length of the existing Dartford tunnels. The route is intended to relieve pressure on the Dartford Crossing. National Highways says it will double road capacity across the Thames east of London and strengthen links between the South East ports, the Midlands and the North. Designing down construction carbon The TBM will be electrically powered using renewable energy. Lower-carbon tunnel lining concrete and design changes intended to reduce material quantities form part of the project’s stated ambition to achieve carbon-neutral construction. For the tunnelling sector, however, the immediate significance lies in the machine itself: a recorddiameter variable-density TBM designed to negotiate changing geology, high groundwater pressure and two successive drives beneath one of the country’s most important estuaries.

Clancy becomes first UK customer for TRACTO’s 20ACS Rockstar

N

o sooner had the new GRUNDODRILL 20ACS arrived at TRACTO’s UK headquarters in Bedford than it was acquired by Tier 1 contractor Clancy Group. It is the first machine of its kind to enter the UK and one of the first to leave TRACTO’s German production line.

Sweeney, who had used TRACTO products for more than two decades with a previous employer, was impressed by the 20-tonne rig. Having previously operated pipe bursters, moles and rammers, he joined his colleagues at the controls to become familiar with the new machine.

Clancy Group has been awarded a comprehensive contract by South West Water covering a programme of water and sewer pipe installation and renewal projects across the South West. To support the work, the company has created an in-house team of trenchless specialists, investing in both the equipment and skills needed to work alongside its established subcontractor network.

“TRACTO products are widely acknowledged as among the best, so I am delighted that the team has the opportunity to use them across the initial two-year framework agreement,” he said.

Frank Sweeney, Clancy Group’s Trenchless Technology Specialist, and his colleague John Lawler, an experienced operator of trenchless equipment, approached TRACTO HDD Manager Jim O’Grady to discuss the most appropriate equipment for the programme. Clancy subsequently submitted a proposal to purchase two TRACTO machines: a GRUNDODRILL 20ACS horizontal directional drilling rig and a GRUNDOBURST 400G pipe-bursting system. The drilling rig will be used to install new water pipes through challenging ground conditions, while the pipe burster will support the renewal of existing infrastructure. To upskill the new team, Clancy personnel completed a series of EUSR-accredited courses at TRACTO’s UK training centre, covering: • Introduction to HDD – GRUNDODRILL • Pipe bursting – GRUNDOBURST • Twin-capstan winching – GRUNDOWINCH • Impact moling – GRUNDOMAT A subsequent hands-on training course at TRACTO’s demonstration ground also served as the official handover of the 20ACS. The practical session was delivered by TRACTO HDD specialist demonstrator George Fowler. 38 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

“Our first project is in Devon, where we will be replacing hundreds of metres of ageing pipe infrastructure. I am confident that we now have the right technology to support this work.” A GRUNDOBURST 400G is due to arrive before the project begins. Together with the drilling rig, it will help Clancy meet a number of sustainability and delivery objectives, including minimising damage to roads, pavements and green spaces; reducing disruption to residents and businesses; limiting the materials and resources required; and enabling existing materials to be recycled for reinstatement. The 20ACS has been supplied with a TRACTO MA010-D dual mixing tank mounted on a custom-built trailer, together with a DigiTrak ARES locating system. Designed with the operator in mind, the rig features a fully enclosed, climate-controlled cab for year-round comfort, along with new software intended to simplify rod changes. Although slightly heavier than its 18ACS predecessor, the new machine can accommodate larger bore diameters and offers four rod options. These comprise two sizes of dual rod suitable for both jet and rock drilling, together with two sizes of dedicated jet-drilling rod. TRACTO will support the Clancy team on site during its first drill. This forms part of the manufacturer’s wider customer support package, which includes maintenance, parts and servicing.

How to reduce jobsite downtime through smarter HDD maintenance

F

or horizontal directional drilling contractors, unplanned downtime can disrupt project schedules, increase labour costs and affect customer confidence. Although maintenance requires time away from drilling, a planned and consistent approach is far less disruptive than responding to an unexpected breakdown. Vermeer UK outlines some practical steps contractors can take to protect their HDD equipment, improve reliability and keep projects moving. Start with daily inspections A short inspection before each shift can identify developing problems before they halt production. Operators should follow the machine’s service manual, checking fluid levels, hydraulic connections, hoses, filters and visible components for signs of wear, damage or leakage. Checks should continue at the end of the working day. Cleaning away drilling fluid, soil and debris prevents material from accumulating around components and gives operators another opportunity to spot loose fittings, damaged lines or other emerging issues. A small leak, unusual sound or worn component identified early can often be addressed during planned maintenance before it becomes a more serious and costly failure. Protect drill pipe and tooling Drill pipe is subjected to considerable stress throughout every bore. Correct lubrication, careful handling and regular rotation can distribute wear more evenly and extend its service life. Crews should regularly inspect pipe threads, tooling and the saver sub. Any component that is cracked, excessively worn or has exceeded its recommended limits should be removed from service. Continuing to use damaged drill pipe increases the risk of a downhole failure, potentially leading to lengthy delays, recovery work and lost tooling. 40 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

Vermeer UK can provide thread and upset gauges, together with guidance on recommended drill pipe measurements and operating limits. Plan maintenance around the workload Smart maintenance means scheduling servicing at the least disruptive time, rather than allowing a fault to dictate the timetable. Service intervals should be tracked using operating hours and the manufacturer’s recommendations. This enables contractors to arrange replacement parts, technical support and workshop time in advance, while coordinating maintenance around their project pipeline. Keeping commonly required service items and critical spares available can also reduce repair times. Documenting inspections, servicing and component replacement helps contractors monitor machine condition, identify recurring issues and plan future maintenance. Match the machine to the application Operating an HDD rig beyond its intended capacity can accelerate wear and increase the likelihood of failure. Selecting the right machine, drill pipe and tooling for the ground conditions, bore design and required product diameter helps protect the equipment and maintain productivity. Vermeer’s Navigator® HDD range covers a broad variety of applications, from the compact D8x12 S3 and D10x15 S3 to larger models including the D40x55DR S3, D60x90 S3 and D100x140 S3. Building reliability into every project Effective HDD maintenance combines trained operators, documented inspections, planned servicing and timely replacement of worn components. With access to genuine parts, servicing and technical expertise, Vermeer UK supports contractors in keeping equipment productive and reducing avoidable downtime throughout its working life.

ABOUT OUR EXHIBITORS

A defining moment for the trenchless industry There are times when an industry reaches a genuine point of opportunity, and I believe we are at one of those moments now.

“

One of the great strengths of No-Dig Live has always been the opportunity to see technology in action. Visitors can see machinery working, speak directly with the people who design, manufacture and use it, compare different approaches and discuss the challenges they are facing on current and forthcoming projects.

Across water, wastewater, energy and wider underground infrastructure, the scale of investment planned for the years ahead is substantial. At the same time, asset owners are under increasing pressure to improve resilience, reduce environmental impact, work more efficiently and deliver major programmes with less disruption to the communities they serve. That creates an important role for trenchless technology. The challenge now is not simply to demonstrate that alternatives to conventional excavation exist. It is to show how those technologies can be deployed at scale, how they perform in real working environments and how they can help infrastructure owners and their delivery partners meet increasingly demanding operational, financial and environmental objectives. That is what makes No-Dig Live 2026 particularly relevant. From 29 September to 1 October, more than 200 exhibitors will come together at NAEC Stoneleigh Park, bringing equipment, technology, engineering expertise and practical solutions from across the trenchless and underground infrastructure sector. One of the great strengths of No-Dig Live has always been the opportunity to see technology in action. Visitors can see machinery working, speak directly with the people who design, manufacture and use it, compare different approaches and discuss the challenges they are facing on current and forthcoming projects. The companies featured in the following pages give a flavour of that breadth. Some will be launching new products, others demonstrating established technologies in new applications, and many will be bringing years of specialist knowledge to conversations with contractors, utilities, consultants and asset owners. Ultimately, that exchange of knowledge is what No-Dig Live is about. The exhibition brings the people facing infrastructure challenges together with the people developing the solutions to them. I would like to thank every exhibitor, sponsor, partner and supporter contributing to this year’s event. Their continued investment is what enables No-Dig Live to remain a practical, working showcase for the industry. I hope the following pages help you plan your visit, and I look forward to welcoming you to Stoneleigh in September. Paul Harwood Managing Director, Westrade Group

ABOUT OUR EXHIBITORS

Portable power for trenchless operations: Instagrid heads to No-Dig Live

The Instagrid LINK MAX system provides portable 400 V, three-phase power for demanding applications including welding.

F

rom pumps and welding equipment to fusion tools and inspection systems, modern utility and trenchless operations depend upon reliable power. Yet the locations in which that power is needed are often remote, difficult to access or environmentally sensitive. For decades, diesel generators have been the default solution. Although familiar, they can be heavy, noisy and costly to operate, while fuel storage, exhaust emissions and regular maintenance create additional challenges— particularly around water, in urban locations and within confined working environments. Instagrid believes portable battery power offers a more flexible alternative. Already in use across UK construction, infrastructure and utility projects, its professional power systems will be demonstrated at No-Dig Live 2026. A smarter way to power the working day At the heart of the Instagrid system is Instagrid ONE, a compact portable power supply designed to deliver gridquality electricity wherever it is required. Weighing 20 kg, the unit can be carried and positioned by one person. It provides 3.6 kW of continuous 230 V output and handles peaks of up to 18 kW, enabling it to operate equipment with high start-up currents. Once on site, users can connect their equipment and begin work immediately, without fuel, warm-up periods or engine maintenance. 52 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

Instagrid LINK allows compatible units to be connected to provide additional capacity and longer runtimes. For more demanding applications, Instagrid LINK MAX combines three Instagrid ONE units to create a portable 400 V, 16 A three-phase supply, delivering 11 kW of rated output and peak power of up to 54 kW. The modular system can support applications including welding, heavy-duty cutting and pumping, while allowing each component to be transported separately. For UK construction sites operating 110 V equipment, Instagrid GO 36 LV provides the same 3.6 kW rated output and 18 kW peak performance in a low-voltage format developed specifically for professional site tools. Supporting mobile trenchless operations Trenchless projects frequently require power where a permanent grid connection is unavailable or impractical. Crews may need to operate equipment at access chambers, along highways or across extensive utility networks, moving between several locations during a single shift. In these environments, portability can have a direct effect on productivity. A power source that can be carried by one person and positioned close to the equipment reduces the need for long cable runs and allows working areas to be established or relocated quickly.

ABOUT OUR EXHIBITORS

Potential applications include electrofusion and PE pipe welding, inspection equipment, power tools, lighting and pumps. The absence of exhaust emissions at the point of use is particularly relevant around excavations, chambers and enclosed working areas, while low-noise operation can benefit projects in residential and urban locations. Back-up power for pumping operations Portable battery systems can also provide an additional back-up option for compatible pumping equipment. A mains power failure at a pumping station can contribute to flooding, sewage discharge, environmental damage and disruption to services. Although diesel generators remain an important source of emergency power, their size and weight can make rapid deployment difficult, particularly at restrictedaccess locations. Instagrid units can be carried aboard service vehicles and taken directly to the point at which power is needed. The modular system allows operators to deploy a single unit or combine units where greater capacity or three-phase power is required. The appropriate configuration and available runtime will depend upon the pump and operating load.

An Instagrid portable power unit carried aboard a utility service vehicle. The case for switching Instagrid says its portable systems can reduce operating costs by up to 80% over their lifetime compared with combustion generators. Savings can come from removing fuel purchases and engine servicing, alongside the time spent transporting, refuelling and maintaining conventional equipment. The units recharge from a mains supply in under three hours, with in-vehicle charging also available. They also remove the risk of fuel spills at the point of use— an important consideration for work near drainage infrastructure, watercourses and other sensitive environments. Portable battery power will not replace every generator application. However, for mobile teams, intermittent tool use and sites affected by noise, access or emissions constraints, it offers an increasingly practical option. At No-Dig Live 2026, visitors will be able to meet the Instagrid team, explore its portable power range and discuss how battery power could support their trenchless and utility operations.

One tablet. Every inspection:

Scanprobe heads to No-Dig Live 2026 Capturing a clear image is only one part of a professional pipeline inspection. Operators must also control equipment accurately, record observations, produce compliant reports and deliver the results to customers, often while working under pressure on site.

A

t No-Dig Live 2026, Scanprobe Techniques will demonstrate how each stage can be brought together within one connected inspection ecosystem. The British manufacturer will return to NAEC Stoneleigh Park from 29 September to 1 October with its latest CCTV inspection systems, reporting technology and practical developments designed around the way drainage professionals work. Central to the display will be Scanprobe’s X-Range platform. Rather than requiring a separate control unit and workflow for each type of survey, the same rugged tablet can be used across the X40, X60 and X90 pushrod systems, the XPC pole camera and the Maxius crawler range. This provides operators with a consistent, familiar interface as their inspection requirements change, while enabling businesses to expand their capabilities without repeatedly investing time in learning an entirely new system.

68 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

Inspection and reporting in one place The X-Range tablet brings equipment control and reporting together within a single device. Scanprobe’s mina+ software is included with the platform and supports WRc-certified MSCC5 and MSCC6 reporting. Operators can capture footage, record coded observations, complete reports and share finished work without transferring information between multiple devices or systems. Reports can also be exported as XML files for use with other compatible reporting platforms, giving contractors flexibility in how inspection data is processed, stored and delivered to customers. Maxius for more demanding surveys For larger and more demanding inspections, visitors will be able to explore the Maxius crawler system. Maxius combines 1080p Full HD imaging with 360-degree pan-and-tilt control, an electronic gantry, rear-view camera and lighting, selectable sonde frequencies and laser measurement.

ABOUT OUR EXHIBITORS

In its standard configuration, the system is designed to inspect pipelines ranging from 150 mm to 600 mm in diameter. With an additional carrier, its capability can be extended to pipelines of up to 1,000 mm. Crucially, these are not simply features on a specification sheet. No-Dig Live’s working environment gives contractors, utilities and asset owners the opportunity to see equipment operating, try the controls and discuss how each system could fit into their own inspection workflows. British manufacturing and technical support Scanprobe has designed and manufactured pipeline inspection equipment in Britain since 1985. That experience continues to shape the company’s approach: equipment should be robust enough for demanding site conditions, straightforward for operators to use and properly supported after handover.

Every Maxius system therefore includes practical operator training, backed by Scanprobe’s UK-based service and technical support team. Throughout No-Dig Live, the Scanprobe team will demonstrate its inspection systems, discuss reporting workflows and help visitors identify how improved inspection capabilities could enable them to undertake larger or more technically demanding projects. Visitors will be able to explore how one connected platform can support different inspection applications from compact pushrod and pole-camera surveys to larger crawler operations, while maintaining a consistent approach to equipment control, data capture and reporting. To arrange a meeting with the Scanprobe team, visit scanprobe.com, email sales@scanprobe.com or call +44 (0)20 3253 2001.

ABOUT OUR EXHIBITORS

W

hile the markets have changed considerably over the last century, the focus has remained the same: designing products that last, perform in demanding environments and help customers extend the life of valuable infrastructure assets. One of the best examples of this approach is the VIPWECO internal pipe repair system. Developed as a permanent alternative to excavation and pipe replacement, VIP-WECO allows damaged or leaking pipelines to be repaired from inside the pipe itself. By avoiding major excavation work, utilities can reduce disruption to roads, businesses and local communities while significantly lowering project costs and carbon emissions. The system combines stainless steel components with high-performance elastomer seals to create a robust, long-term repair suitable for both potable water and wastewater pipelines. Designed for a service life measured in decades rather than years, VIP-WECO has become a trusted solution for utilities and contractors across the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Australia. One project that highlights the benefits of trenchless repair was the rehabilitation of the Millennium Main in London. Working with M Group, DWG Infraco and AECOM on behalf of Thames Water, VIP-WECO technology helped restore one of the capital’s key water mains supplying the Greenwich Peninsula. By using trenchless techniques rather than conventional replacement, the project avoided significant disruption and delivered substantial cost savings while extending the life of the existing asset. As pipeline networks continue to age, utilities are increasingly looking for solutions that can deal with more extensive defects without resorting to replacement. This led to the development of VIPWECO CONNECT.

VIP-WECO CONNECT allows individual repair units to be linked together to create longer repair sections inside the pipeline. This makes it possible to tackle larger areas of corrosion, longitudinal cracks and more complex defects using the same trenchless approach that has made VIPWECO successful around the world. One such project was the 2026 award nominated Shoreham Port project where in conjunction with Lanes Group and RSM Lining Supplies, 126 metres of outfall pipelines were relined using this method. The ability to connect multiple seals together gives engineers far greater flexibility, particularly on large diameter pipelines where traditional repair methods can be expensive and disruptive. The latest addition to the range is VIP-WECO REMOTE, developed to meet the growing need for repairing smaller pipelines where man-entry installation is not possible. Offered in partnership with German trenchless specialists Obduramus Umwelttechnik, VIP-WECO REMOTE can be installed remotely using inflatable packers, removing the need for personnel to enter the pipe. This makes it ideal for difficult-to-access assets and smaller diameter water mains and rising mains where speed and safety are critical. As water companies around the world focus on reducing carbon emissions and making better use of existing assets, trenchless technologies are becoming an increasingly important part of the solution. VIP-Polymers continues to invest in products that help utilities repair rather than replace infrastructure, keeping pipelines operating safely and efficiently for longer. From tunnel gaskets beneath major cities to awardwinning water main rehabilitation projects, the company remains focused on solving practical engineering problems and helping customers get more life from the assets they already have. ABOUT OUR EXHIBITORS

Wöhler UK to make No-Dig Live debut Wöhler UK will make its first appearance at No-Dig Live in September, showcasing a selection of advanced inspection camera systems designed to help drainage professionals examine pipelines with greater speed, accuracy and confidence.

Visitors to Stand 30 will be able to see live demonstrations of four systems from the company’s VIS range: the Wöhler VIS 750, VIS 700, VIS 500 and VIS 360. The exhibition marks an important milestone for Wöhler UK as it strengthens its support for the UK drainage, utilities and civil engineering sectors. With demand growing for efficient, non-invasive methods of assessing underground assets, high-quality camera technology has become an essential tool for identifying faults and planning maintenance without unnecessary excavation. By providing clear visual information from inside the pipeline, inspection cameras can help operators locate blockages, assess structural deterioration and identify defects before they develop into more costly problems. This allows contractors and asset owners to plan appropriate interventions, reduce downtime and make better-informed decisions about maintenance and rehabilitation. functionality for demanding pipeline inspections. Alongside it, the VIS 700 offers a versatile solution for routine drainage and sewer surveys, while the VIS 500 combines portability and performance for a broad range of inspection and maintenance applications. Completing the line-up will be the compact VIS 360, designed to provide reliable inspection capability in confined locations where access and manoeuvrability are important considerations. Together, the four systems demonstrate how inspection equipment can be selected to suit different working environments, pipe configurations and operational requirements. Hands-on inspection technology Rather than simply presenting equipment on the stand, Wöhler UK will give visitors the chance to handle and operate the systems. Live demonstrations will allow contractors, engineers and drainage professionals to experience the cameras’ controls, image quality and practical features firsthand. Visitors will also be able to compare the systems and discuss how their different capabilities could fit within existing inspection workflows.

ABOUT OUR EXHIBITORS

“ The Wöhler UK team will be available throughout the event to answer technical questions, discuss specific pipeline inspection challenges and recommend appropriate equipment for different applications. Whether visitors are considering an upgrade to an existing camera system or investing in inspection technology for the first time, the company’s product specialists will provide practical guidance based on individual operational needs. Supporting preventative maintenance Inspection cameras increasingly play an important role in preventative maintenance strategies. The ability to examine internal pipe conditions enables operators to identify blockages, damage and deterioration before problems escalate into failures requiring emergency intervention. Modern camera systems also support more targeted maintenance and rehabilitation. By establishing the nature and location of a defect, inspection footage can help project teams determine whether cleaning, localised repair, lining or replacement is the most appropriate response.

This improves the quality of asset-condition information while helping to reduce unnecessary excavation, disruption and expenditure. For Wöhler UK, exhibiting at No-Dig Live represents more than a first appearance at an industry event. It reflects the company’s continued development within the UK market and its commitment to supporting professionals with inspection technology designed to enable safer, more efficient and better-informed decision-making. Visitors can meet the Wöhler UK team, explore the VIS 750, VIS 700, VIS 500 and VIS 360, and experience the systems in operation on Stand 30 throughout No-Dig Live 2026.

FOCUS ON TRENCHLESS TRAINING

The Link Between Training and Standards cured-in-place pipes under European and international frameworks.

Frank Reilly Director JBP’s Trenchless, Training Programme Standards exist to define what good looks like. In trenchless rehabilitation – where underground water and wastewater infrastructure must be assessed, specified and renewed with precision – they set the technical baseline for materials, methods, installation practice and quality control. But a standard sitting on a shelf, or referenced in a specification without being understood, is of limited value. It is training that gives standards their reach. A landscape of standards The body of standards relevant to trenchless pipeline rehabilitation is substantial. At the international level, the ISO 11296 series covers plastics piping systems for the renovation of non-pressure drainage and sewerage networks, while ISO 11297 addresses pressure systems and ISO 11298 covers water supply networks – each specifying requirements for techniques including cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) lining, close-fit lining and slip-lining. The recently updated ISO 11295:2026 provides a classification and strategic overview of rehabilitation activities from condition assessment through to project specification and documentation. For CIPP specifically, ASTM F1216 remains a widely referenced standard for inversion and cure practice, and EN ISO 11296-4 governs lining with 78 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

On the inspection side, EN 13508-2 defines the methodology for CCTVbased condition assessment and coding of sewer pipelines – a standard that underpins the WRc Manual of Sewer Condition Classification (MSCC) widely used across the UK and internationally. EN 15885 classifies the full range of trenchless renovation and repair techniques, providing a common reference framework for specifiers and contractors alike. Where training enters Standards describe requirements. Training develops the competency to meet them. This distinction matters. An installer working with a CIPP system needs to understand not just the process, but why each stage – impregnation, insertion, cure management, post-installation testing – exists within a standards framework and what the consequences of deviation are. A project engineer specifying a rehabilitation programme needs to understand how EN 15885 classifications relate to method selection, or how ISO 11295 structures the decision-making process. An asset manager reviewing a contractor’s quality submission needs to know what the standard requires in order to evaluate what they are reading. Without that knowledge, standards become a compliance exercise rather than a quality mechanism. Training is what converts the written requirement into informed practice. Training in practice A practical example of this relationship in action is the Sewer Pipe Condition Classification and Coding course offered through JBP’s Trenchless Training programme. Aligned directly with EN 13508-2,

the course leads to certification in the WRc MSCC coding scheme – equipping inspectors and engineers with the structured competency to produce the condition data on which sound rehabilitation decisions depend. The standard sets the framework; the course ensures it is applied correctly. Training – a catalyst for standards development In developing markets – across ASEAN and elsewhere – the picture is more complex. Established international standards such as the ISO 11296 series or EN 13508-2 may not yet have been formally adopted or enforced at a national level, and local regulatory frameworks for trenchless rehabilitation are often still taking shape. Here, training plays a different but equally important role. By introducing practitioners to international standards and best practice, structured training builds the foundational literacy from which national frameworks can grow. Engineers and regulators who understand how EN 15885 classifies techniques, or how ASTM F1216 governs CIPP installation, are better placed to advocate for and implement equivalent local standards. Training, in this context, does not simply support standards – it actively seeds them. The link between standards and training is not incidental. In mature markets, training embeds and upholds standards. In emerging ones, it helps build them. In both cases, the outcome is the same – a sector better equipped to deliver infrastructure that performs, lasts, and can be held to account.

ISTT NEWS

ISTT and JSTT explore closer collaboration at Tokyo exhibition The International Society for Trenchless Technology and its Japanese affiliated society have discussed opportunities for closer collaboration during Japan’s largest annual sewage works exhibition.

International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT) chair Mark Haebler and executive director Trevor Gosatti met representatives of the Japan Society for Trenchless Technology (JSTT) during a visit to the Sewage Works Exhibition 2026 in Tokyo. Held at Tokyo Big Sight from 4–7 August, the exhibition brought together organisations from across Japan’s wastewater infrastructure sector and provided the setting for discussions about future cooperation between the two societies. Haebler and Gosatti met JSTT chair Dr Hiroaki Morita, executive director Katsumi Sakaki and international representative Mirei Hirano. JSTT is one of ISTT’s earliest affiliated societies, and the meeting examined how the organisations could build upon their longstanding relationship.

80 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

Among the subjects discussed was the potential development of a joint ISTT and JSTT event. The two organisations also considered JSTT’s continuing involvement in ISTT’s Young Trenchless Professionals Committee, where it is represented by Hisatoshi Kasahara of Japanese telecommunications company NTT. The meeting also covered a Lifetime Service Award nomination recognising a longstanding contribution to the development of trenchless technology in Japan. Japan has played an important role in advancing trenchless construction and rehabilitation methods, with several Japanese companies and technologies previously recognised through the ISTT No-Dig Awards.

ISTT NEWS

One example discussed during the meeting was Yasuda Engineering’s Milling Mole Method, which received an award in 2012. The slurry-type pipe-jacking system was developed to drive through underground metal obstructions, including steel sheet piles, which can present a significant challenge during conventional pipe-jacking operations. During the exhibition, the ISTT representatives also visited member companies Yasuda Engineering, Toa Grout Kogyo, Sekisui Chemical and Kansei, part of the K Group, to view some of the technologies being presented to the Japanese wastewater sector. The Sewage Works Exhibition is organised annually by the Japan Sewage Works Association and is aimed particularly at local government bodies responsible for the management and development of wastewater infrastructure.

Its exhibition zones cover the full lifecycle of sewage assets, including design and surveying, construction, wastewater treatment, pipe materials, inspection and maintenance. The 2026 event was the 38th edition and attracted a record 417 exhibiting companies and organisations across 1,450 booths. This represented considerable growth from the previous Tokyo edition in 2024, which featured 351 exhibitors and 1,195 booths. Preliminary figures indicate that 56,102 people attended across the four days, highlighting both the scale of Japan’s wastewater infrastructure sector and the continuing demand for technologies that can improve the construction, maintenance and rehabilitation of underground assets. The exhibition moves between Japanese host cities each year, with the next edition scheduled to take place in Yokohama in 2027. AUGUST 2026 | TRENCHLESS WORKS 81

ISTT NEWS

ISTT strengthens global network as new trenchless societies emerge With interest in trenchless technology growing across new international markets, ISTT’s Affiliated Societies Committee is working to connect established organisations, support regional development and guide prospective societies through the affiliation process.

More than 20 affiliated societies now form the international network of the International Society for Trenchless Technology (ISTT), connecting national and regional expertise with a wider global community. Supporting that network is the responsibility of ISTT’s Affiliated Societies Committee, formerly known as Membership and Regional Support. Its role covers relationships with existing societies and individual members, alongside the assessment and approval of applications from new organisations seeking affiliation. Chaired by Thorsten Schulte of the German Society for Trenchless Technology, GATT, the committee brings together representatives from Europe, Asia-Pacific, the Americas and Southern Africa. Wing Chan of the China Hong Kong Society for Trenchless Technology serves as vice-chair. Regular virtual meetings provide a forum through which individual societies can share regional developments, identify common challenges and learn from programmes being delivered successfully elsewhere.

84 TRENCHLESS WORKS | AUGUST 2026

Thorsten Schulte Chair, German Society for Trenchless Technology, GATT

Sharing regional experience Recent European discussions have included work surrounding the European Union’s approach to reducing water losses and closer engagement with drinking-water regulation. These issues are placing greater emphasis on the condition, performance and renewal of underground water infrastructure, creating an important role for trenchless investigation and rehabilitation methods. Within Asia-Pacific, the committee monitors regional events and the development of trenchless communities in emerging markets. Representatives from North and South America also use the meetings to share national initiatives and consider opportunities for greater cooperation between their respective societies. In Southern Africa, the Southern African Society for Trenchless Technology has reported on efforts to expand membership and increase awareness in neighbouring countries through technical masterclasses and training. Bringing these updates into one international forum gives every region a voice while helping societies identify activities that could be adapted for their own markets.

ISTT NEWS

Supporting emerging trenchless societies Another important part of the committee’s work is evaluating applications from countries seeking to establish an ISTT-affiliated society. Recent expressions of interest have come from Hungary, Croatia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Morocco, Korea and Thailand, as well as organisations across the Middle East. Prospective societies are assessed against ISTT’s bylaws, including the longstanding requirement to have at least 20 members before affiliation can be approved. This is intended to ensure that each organisation represents a sufficiently broad cross-section of its national industry and cannot be controlled by a single business. Creating a new national society can, however, take considerable time, particularly where the local trenchless community is still developing. The committee has therefore been considering ways to make the process easier to navigate without weakening its membership requirements.

One proposal is to appoint a dedicated affiliation coordinator who could guide prospective societies through each stage, maintain communication and help applications retain momentum. The committee must also manage more complex situations, including cases where a second organisation is formed in a country that already has an established ISTT affiliate. Its responsibility in these circumstances is to consult the parties involved, protect existing relationships and apply ISTT’s affiliation policy consistently. Through this combination of regional exchange, practical support and structured oversight, the committee is helping ISTT expand its international reach while maintaining credible representation in each market.
