Second Time Around is a consignment store that has served Waterdown for more than 35 years, dressing clients for every milestone or for their everyday pleasure. “We help ladies refresh their wardrobe and turn over their old to new favourites, while saving the environment and their wallets,” says Store Owner Bev Micheli.

When a local singer-songwriter recently entered Second Time Around, Micheli says, “We had the pleasure of curating her on-stage look while listening to her fabulous music on Spotify. She found maybe four or five outfits, with boots, belt and jewellery. The customer was over the moon, as was I. She looked beautiful in all of them.”

Bungalo Beach is another popular vintage consignment shop where consumers buy and sell quality apparel and jewellery. Their flagship Waterdown store occupies the main level of a downtown heritage building.

“We have whole families of customers that are second, third generation or more,” says Jeff Bydevaate, Service Advisor and Technician at the Flamboro Street shop. Though he has seen Waterdown grow exponentially, Bydevaate says it remains a tight knit community that values personalized service. “The vibe I get from customers is, ‘My neighbour told me not to go anywhere else.’”

f the three official meals of the day, lunch doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Sandwiched between breakfast and dinner, it’s often a dine-and-dash, scarf it down at your desk kind of ritual. But speaking of sandwiches, local chefs and creators of hand-held delights want you to slow down and savour the taste.

“Fresh bread with quality ingredients is why people love our sandwiches so much,” says Tiffany Drong, Owner and Operator of Drongkowskis Farm Market and Deli. This beloved downtown deli serves up classics like bacon and egg, chicken club, as well as signature items with their own twist, like the Breakfast Avocadokowski. Also on the menu are fresh salads and smoothies.

The Waterdown location offers both takeaway and a sit-in option.

“We pride ourselves in supporting local, with a farm to fork approach using Ontario meats and cheeses,” Drong says. “We even have our own gourmet mustard line that makes each and every sandwich a gastro experience.”

Garcia’s Sandwich Shop puts its own gourmet spin on traditional Italian foods, using Ontario-raised meats, kaiser buns baked locally, and the addition of gluten-free, vegetarian and build-your-own options. Among their special features are Italian-style hot sandwiches made with either eggplant, veal, pork, chicken, meatballs, or steak, complete with all the mouth-watering fixin’s – onions, mushrooms, peppers, and Garcia’s homemade tomato sauce.

Aside from being a popular lunch spot, Garcia’s offers catering, a hot lunch school lunch program, and happily supports community events. “It’s not just a spot to get together for coffee, ice cream, lunch or dinner but to have authentic Italian meals,” says Derryk Garcia, the restaurant’s Owner.

Another well-known lunch destination, which operates on a much larger scale, is Pane Fresco at your local Fortinos. “Chef-made, ready to eat, Pane Fresco is real food,” says Miklos Kanalas, Franchisee at the Waterdown location. “That’s why our customers love it!”

Pane Fresco offers healthy salads, 16 signature soups, unique Roman pizzas, a sushi and noodle bar, and at least 15 varieties of sandwiches and wraps. Asked what he’d call their signature item, Kanalas raves about the Prime Rib Sandwich. “It’s the best around!” he says. “Oven roasted Prime Rib beef, carved and served on a fresh baked ciabatta bun, then topped with caramelized onions, cheese and truffle mayo. Literally mouthwatering, this sandwich is savoury and satisfying. A definite must try.”

Locals go crazy for the fritters at Copper Kettle Cafe, but it’s also a great place to grab lunch. On the menu are more than a dozen sandwiches of the deli, cheesy, veggie or melty variety. If you’re looking for a crispy, decadent hand-held treat, the breaded chicken sandwiches at Hello Iris come in Regular, Spicy, BBQ Bacon, Lemon Dill, or Jalapeno Hot Ranch.

• 2 lbs ground beef • 1 cup breadcrumbs • 2 eggs • 1 cup finely grated Parmesan cheese • 1/4 cup grated onion (optional) • 1 teaspoon fine salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 1/3 cup of milk • 1 teaspoon dried oregano or dried parsley • Tomato sauce • Kaiser buns (or buns of choice)

1. In a large mixing bowl, mix the breadcrumbs

TOPPINGS • Mozzarella or Provolone cheese slices • 6 mushrooms • 1 whole large onion • 1 sweet pepper of choice • Grilled jalapeño peppers (if desired for spice)

and milk together and let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes while preparing the other ingredients.

2. In a large separate mixing bowl, add the ground beef, eggs, Parmesan cheese, onions, salt, black pepper, oregano, or parsley.

3. Using your hands combine and mix all the

ingredients until well combined being careful not to over mix. Using a tablespoon, scoop and roll into walnut size meatballs.

4. Bake in the oven on a baking sheet for 10 to 12 minutes at 425 F. Then remove from the oven, place in a pot on the stove and simmer with your favourite tomato sauce for 10 to 15 minutes.

5. In a pan over medium heat, add the onions,

sweet peppers and mushrooms, season with black pepper and salt to taste, and sauté to your liking.

6. Serve the meatballs in your kaiser buns

with sautéed veggies, a slice of cheese, and finish off with a drizzle of tomato sauce.

7. Enjoy!
