According to Ben Cobb, lead gaffer and Hot Shop manager at Museum of Glass, Tacoma’s love affair with glass art began with internationally acclaimed glass artist Dale Chihuly, who was born in Tacoma. “In the early 70s, Dale Chihuly was instrumental in starting the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. This school brought many glass makers to the region to work and teach at the school,” he says. Cobb also explains that the Pacific Northwest was the ideal environment for creating glass art, and this was a big attraction for glass artists. “The temperate climate of the region was conducive to working with hot glass, so many people who came here ended up staying and starting studios. Those few studios grew into the tight-knit community of glassmakers that exists today.”

Cobb says the average visitor might not know much about glass art, but he invites guests to explore the medium. “Here, the visitors are invited to observe the creative process and are encouraged to ask questions. This helps people to not only understand the process of glass making, but also can give some context to the art being viewed in our galleries.” For attendees who are interested in creating their own glass art, Tacoma Glassblowing Studio and Area 253 Glassblowing provide studio space and instruction for creating personal pieces.

Tacoma is steeped in glass art tradition. Attendees can see beautiful examples at the Chihuly Bridge of Glass, Tacoma Union Station, The Swiss Restaurant and Pub, University of Washington Tacoma Library, and University of Puget Sound. The Museum of Glass houses an extensive glass art collection as impressive as its 90-foot cone. Planners can schedule meetings, events, and demonstrations in the museum’s Hot Shop. Tacoma Art Museum continues to grow with its recent gift of the Benaroya Collection, which includes 225 works of Northwest and international glass art, plus paintings and sculptures. A new wing designed by award-winning architect Tom Kundig is projected to open in fall 2018.

LeMay—America’s Car Museum’s massive 165,000-square-foot space and three-and-a-half–acre show field will certainly appeal to any car enthusiast, but it will also hold the interest of anyone who appreciates American history. The museum’s design mimics the curving hood scoop of a vintage Ford Mustang and its exterior is an impressive sight from Interstate 5 near downtown Tacoma. Inside the museum, attendees can see exhibits covering alternative propulsion, American muscle cars, motorsports, motorcycles, and much more. Scott Keller, curator at LeMay, is responsible for overall visitor experience. In putting together the museum’s exhibits, he never starts with a specific car. Keller explains that it’s important to begin curating an exhibit with a story or theme instead.

He asks what the historical and cultural context is for these themes, and then cars are selected to fit the narrative after that question is examined. The process takes a few years, sometimes more. “The beauty of it is that the cars come from all different types of people, from individuals that maybe have one special car they restored themselves, to collectors who have hundreds of cars. At the end of the day it’s a privilege for them to have their cars in these exhibits,” Keller says. The museum has more than its fair share of expensive and rare automobiles, but Keller explains that’s far from the point of the museum. “It’s all about people’s personal connection, it is the emotional connection you have with a specific car.” For Keller, the car that stands out most at the museum is

a 1963 split window Corvette. “A desirable automobile for sure, but my connection to it dates back to 1963 when I saw one for the first time. I just never imagined, through a young boy’s eyes, that anything like that even existed. I can tell you now how I saw it, what color it was, what it was equipped with, yet it’s a car that I’ve never owned or even driven.” That emotional connection to the cars taught Keller that everyone enjoys automobiles through a different lens. Other opportunities for viewing classic cars include LeMay Family Collection at Marymount Event Center, which offers more of the LeMay collection, plus ample event space. Classic car shows in the area include Cruise the Narrows, Fife Family Affair Car Show, the Classy Chassis Car Show in Sumner, and more.

Brewfest and Mt. Rainier Gondola at Crystal Mountain Resort

Ruston Way

One of the most sought-after attractions in the Northwest is easily accessible from Tacoma and Pierce County. Outdoor activities are plentiful at Mt. Rainier National Park. Attendees can access one of five developed areas to the park, the closest to Tacoma being Longmire visitor area, which boasts waterfalls and hiking trails. Paradise, the main visitor area, offers more trails, plus resplendent alpine meadows. Find Mowich Lake, the deepest in the park, and its woodland forest via the Carbon River entrance. Sunrise, the highest point in the park accessible by car, rewards attendees with approachable high elevation and exceptional views. Old-growth forests are the hallmark of the Stevens Canyon/Ohanapecosh entrance.

GO

Randy King, superintendent for Mt. Rainier National Park, works with plenty of people to enhance the visitor experience in the park. Aside from the splendor of Mount Rainier, he says the most popular draws are the wildflowers that peak for two to three weeks during summer, the hiking trails that are fit for all experience levels, and the historic inns throughout the park. King advises visitors to try to spend several days discovering the park and its surrounding areas, and, if you want to avoid crowds in the summer, visit mid-week. King is diplomatic when it comes to his favorite spot in the park. “There’s something here for everyone. Head to Carbon River for the old-growth forest, enjoy family camping

at Ohanapecosh, go to Sunrise for hiking, Longmire for history, and Paradise has a bit of everything. It depends on what you’re looking for exactly. It’s nice to have choices, but it’s even better when all of those choices are good ones.” There are numerous notable attractions within reach of the park. The Mt. Rainier Gondola at Crystal Mountain Resort gives attendees an alternative view of Mount Rainier. Ride the gondola to the peak and enjoy something delicious from the resort’s Summit House. Catch a ride on the Mt. Rainier Railroad and Logging Museum’s steam-powered train, attend one of its special events, or browse the museum’s exhibits.
