Her e go agawe in !

by Meg Teeling

In an industry where music sets the tone for the audience, movie soundtracks have proven themselves to create new meaning to some of our most beloved films. There are even instances where a movie soundtrack can become so overwhelmingly popular, it can bring the past back to life. Mamma Mia! The Movie (2008) is one of those cases where a jukebox musical-turned-movie has created an entire new wave of fans that continues to fav m grow. Mamma Mia! originated as a jukebox musical other-d aughte r duo created by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of Swedish band ABBA and playwright Catherine Johnson. From the successful runs of the musical, Mamma Mia! The Movie was born as the jukebox movie musical we know today. While many movie musicals have seen massive success, the impact of Mamma Mia! The Movie has introduced many more people today to popular music from the past. In Mamma Mia! The Movie, the soundtrack is vital to progressing the story of our main characters. Sophie Sheridan is a bride-to-be who, upon finding her mother Donna’s diary from her younger years, invites three men who could all potentially be her father to her wedding. ABBA’s 1974 song “Honey, Honey” encapsulates how smitten Donna was with the men she came across in her travels, but her carefree travel days have since passed. Of

6

course, the titular track ”Mamma Mia” is sung by Donna upon discovering these three men on her hotel property on . the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi. ABBA’s 1976 ....smash hit “Dancing Queen” also appears in the film as Donna and her friends Tanya and Rosie reminisce on ..the energetic thrills of their youth. The movie, being a jukebox musical, is home to a soundtrack of all things ABBA, sung by Hollywood’s favorites, ! s e including Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Christine sti e r e h or t f Baranski, Julie Walters, and more. Some of ABBA’s s ie t s be greatest hits appear in this soundtrack, including “Gimmie! Gimmie! Gimmie! (A Man After Midnight),” “Voulez-Vous,” “Does Your Mother Know,” and “Super Trouper.” While some of ABBA’s original lyrics had been changed for better plot context, band members Ulvaeus and Andersson were extremely involved with the process of both the movie and the preceding musical, and even had cameos in both films. Of course, Mamma Mia! The Movie was an absolute hit with people familiar with the music of ABBA, but the film also created many new fans of the band. ABBA’s rise to fame began in 1974 after winning European song contest Eurovision with their song “Waterloo,” and they became a staple of any 1970s playlist. Despite the fame, ABBA broke up in 1982 following the divorce of both couples involved in the band. However, Mamma Mia! The Movie helped bring the band into the twenty-first century with the catchy songs and hilariously loveable aun ties characters. Following the immense success of Rosi e&T ani Mamma Mia! The Movie, 2018 brought Mamma Mia! Here a <3 We Go Again, a sequel with more comedy, more ABBA music, and Cher herself. With Mamma Mia! The Movie already a fan favorite when it hit theaters

7

in 2008, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again had a similar impact on those unfamiliar with ABBA. The soundtrack led these new fans straight to ABBA, where their full discography expands beyond our beloved hotel on that Greek island.

The fans had spoken, and ABBA listened. In 2021, all four members of ABBA, Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, came together and created new music for the first time in around forty years with their ninth studio album, Voyage. While the world of Mamma Mia! may not have directly caused this new album to be created, it is safe to say that these movies have created a massive group of new fans. Soundtracks can have a large impact on audiences old and new, so by implementing the music of ABBA into the story of Mamma Mia!, audience members are able to interact with the music in a way that feels organic as they watch characters navigate personal situations with the context of the lyrics. Creating music is a sacred art, but being able to create such a beloved musical and film from that music is something so much bigger. Mamma Mia! The Movie truly became a perfect example in pop culture of how modern twists can bring the past straight into the hands of a new audience, as well as create a whole new era out of it. Sometimes, all someone can say to express this phenomenon is “Thank You For The Music”!

album review alex g by viridiana salgado There are times where one wishes to escape to some vaguely described location with words such as “woodsy” and “full of nature” in the description. I feel that there are many people who have this desire but are often too accompanied by everyday responsibilities. In our modern society, it’s become common for one to get lost in their own cycle that they forget to refresh with a breath of fresh air. That breath of fresh air can come from a multitude of places, people or things. Rocket (2016) by singer-songwriter Alex Giannascoli (Alex G) is one of those places.

15

The album kicks off with the twangy-folk track Poison Root, which follows repetitive lyrics that sing “Now I know everything.” This track is accompanied with a violin which allows the listener to be transported into a different reality, where nature overcomes all else and humanity is submissive to the strength of our green Earth. Bobby, Big Fish, and Alina all share a similar dream-like Irish feel.

love for his brother by singing “but a brother is a brother, and that is that.” This is the beginning of his journey to be a powerful man, as to be powerful is to be forgiving. He ends his story by describing a conversation with his lover, appreciating that his lover will always stay at his side because they know he chooses love and forgiveness, which translates to strength.

Powerful Man, track 11 off the record, acts as a story. The narrator reminisces on events that make him believe that he will be a powerful man, such as in the introduction where it opens with the narrator disappointedly stating that their brother broke the law again and that he’s being sent to jail for his crime. The narrator then goes to admit that his brother is not exactly the best person, suggesting that his brother has hurt him before, but overcomes any doubt of

Forgiveness is a common theme in Giannascoli’s music. However, although this theme may be persistent, he also admits his own faults and is aware of his challenges to accept the fruits of his labor.

16

Tracks Guilty, Judge and Brick presents as the darker side of the paradise the album sets itself to be in. Guilty follows the narrator’s inability to be open about his own desire to just be alone, without any of the people who wish to be around him. In a way, it plays a This record takes one to an contrasting piece to Powerful Man, entirely different universe, as it as this track discusses forgiveness, both plays as an appreciative family and love, while Guilty exposes another view of this theme piece towards love, nature and forgiveness but also admitting the as the narrator questions if he is faults one has to accept. It’s who he claims to be, or if he’s “buried all the evidence of what you refreshing to sit in the middle of used to be.” The jazzy instrumental a woodsy location that’s full of acts as a dizzy subconscious, and it nature, but if one stays there for too long, it may become difficult makes you feel reflective upon to escape your own mentality. yourself as Alex G takes you Nature acts as a reflective place, through his own mindset. and it’s important to acknowledge and accept your own mistakes, but it’s also important to strive to be better. Rocket by Alex G was released in 2017 and is available on all streaming platforms.

HOW TO DEVELOP BLACK & WHITE FILM BY SOPHIA FASCENELLI

FILM DEVELOPMENT As many start the art of film photography, many start too realize how expensive it gets between spending $15 on roll of film and $20 to develop said roll of film at a shop. Many don’t realize it, but film development is super easy to do straight out of the kitchen of your home. The easiest to develop is black & white film, while color film is harder due to the temperature the chemicals need to stay at. Black & white film is my favorite to shoot and develop. I love shooting in black & white because of the shadows and raw emotions that can appear in the photos. My favorite b&w film stocks are Ilford HP5 and CineStill BwXX.

WHAT YOU NEED: A changing bag Measuring Vessels Development tank and film reel Delta 1 Datatainer Chemical Storage Bottle One bag of CineStill DF96 “Developer & Fix” B&W Monobath

19

THE DEVELOPMENT PROCESS STEP 1: LOAD FILM ONTO REEL You’re going to want to put your tank, bottle opener (to open the canister of film) and film in your changing back then seal it up. One of the trickiest parts of the process is learning how to get the film onto the reel without being able to see it. It’s a good idea to practice loading a ruined roll of film in the light.

STEP 2: MIX CHEMICALS Get a One Liter Blackout bottle (preferably one from the film store) and follow the instructions on the bag to mix your chemicals. Mix the powder with water at 82°F.

20

STEP 3: DEVELOP AND SCAN FILM Fill the tank loaded with film with 82°F PLAIN water until it is full, and let the film sit for 1 minute. This step brings the film and tank to the temperature of the developer. After a minute, pour the water down the drain then add your developer in until your tank is full. The developer is the first chemical you add; it causes the image to solidify on the film. Tap the bottom of the tank several times on the counter as soon as you have added the developer. This eliminates any air bubbles that might have developed around the film and keeps them from creating blemishes on the images. Agitate the tank for one minute then agitate it for 10 second every 30 seconds afterwards. Do this for 3.5 minutes. After your 3.5 minutes you can take your fully developed film out of the tank and scan you film with a film scanner or FilmBox Negative Scanner on your phone.

3 DAYS BEFORE FLOG

I

t was 3 days before Flog Gnaw and I'm on the verge of a mental breakdown sitting on my bean bag. I had no outfit and just found out my ride to Flog Gnaw canceled on me. I messaged everyone I knew going to flog and no one had any space in their car for me. At this point, I’m about to sell my ticket because an Uber from Fullerton to Dodger Stadium for both days was estimated to be over $400. Do you know how many meals that is? I ethically and morally (financially*) could not do that. A train ride from Fullerton to Union Station was $14.00 per way meaning I paid $56? (girl math) in total for transportation instead of $400. My mom would be proud.

CAMP

DAy 1

The morning of Flog Gnaw I pulled up to the train station at 8 am in a cargo mini skirt, a white button-up long sleeve with only the top button connected, ear muffs, silver cross, cunty gold heart hoops, and silver rings. I had multiple families of five stare me down and I felt their thoughts communicated through their glares. Aside from the conductor who felt the need to make it a point my nails probably could “claw someone’s eyes out”, the train ride was fairly smooth. I arrived at Union Station an hour before the shuttles were scheduled to head out. I frolicked around for a bit before heading to the line.

Unfortunately, I didn’t bring my headphones so I had to sit with the voices for an hour listening to the ambience of Union Station and insufferable Tyler fans asking each other “what’s your favorite tyler song?”. Thankfully, I was one of the first few to line up for the shuttle because by the time the shuttle came, the line had looped around the station. After about a 15 min shuttle ride, to my surprise, I had to hike up this big ass hill in 90-degree weather, a tight mini skirt, and a shirt with as much faith as my father had in his first three marriages.

24

When I finally reached the top of the first hill, I had to walk up three more different hills and went through a spartan race in order to get to the end of the GA line. Not even inside yet, I hear people yelling “MEDIC, she’s passing out” and the police officers sat on their bitch ass bikes for a good 5 minutes watching us scream before pedaling over with mad attitude. Once I made it inside, I meet up with my friends, rode the ferris wheel and a couple of other rides before fucking up some $20 pupusas (not my proudest moment). I ignored the merch line harder than my dad to his child support bills because like my father I did not have the funds or time. The day 1 lineup was stacked and I got to see Beabadoobee, Turnstile, Kali and Tyler. I was able to inch my way up to the front,

not quite barricade, but I had a good view of Tyler and was surrounded by super chill socially aware people (POC). My only complaint would probably have been that Tyler played the same set as the CMIYGL tour in exactly the same way. Regardless, I’m grateful to have experienced “NEW MAGIC WAND” and “Tamale” in the pit. I unfortunately had to leave after Tyler’s set because the latest train back home was at 10 pm meaning I had to miss The Hillbillies.

GNAW

I was just genuinely on some chill shit on day 2. I wasn’t as concerned with time because the artists I wanted to see I would’ve been fine with seeing the from a distance. I pulled up around 1:30 pm in a Black crochet vest, cargo shorts, mary janes, silver rings, and a moon necklace. I saw the most random people like this mutual I went to Red Cross Camp with 7 years ago, my friend’s best friend, and a kid I had class with last semester. I was able to see Willow, PinkPatheress, Domo, Earl and Syd. Syd performed songs from The Internet and announced they ARE COOKING AHHH. Before I left for the final day, I ended up getting a Raspberry Golf bandana because I was already there like minus well. Looking back, I’m sure I could have done more on Day 2. Yet, I appreciated how gentle the slow morning was and the beauty of not having to work around anyone’s schedule. For it being my first music festival ever and going alone, I genuinely had an amazing time and wouldn’t change a thing :) .

Afterword The serotonin crash was absolutely treacherous. Physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually exhausted, I stumbled back down those three hills to get back to the shuttle. When I finally arrived at the platform, I got lost trying to find coach. Since the conductor was sick of me asking he moved me to business class. I HIGHLY recommend at least once in your life taking business class at night on the Amtrak. The seats reclined all the way back, there was a natural white noise and blue lights that lit up the walkway. It was genuinely the best sleep I’ve ever had in my entire life.

A REVIEW: THE CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA BY EMILY L RATING 9.5/10

IN MY OPINION, THE ADAPTATION TV SERIES OF SABRINA IS A MASTERPIECE. I HAVE WATCHED IT ABOUT THREE TIMES AND STILL TEAR UP AT THE SAD PARTS. THE PRODUCTION TEAM DID A GREAT JOB AT TURNING THE ONCE 1990'S SITCOM TO A DARKER, MYSTERIOUS DRAMA. IT KEEPS THE STORYLINE FRESH, DESPITE THE SHOW MAKING IT TO 4 SEASONS WHICH YOU DON’T SEE TOO OFTEN WITH NETFLIX SERIES. THE ONLY CRITICISM I WOULD GIVE IS THE LAST SEASON HAD A COUPLE LOOSE ENDS IN THE PLOT, BUT I GUESS THAT’S WHAT YOU GET WHEN A TEENAGER PLAYS WITH TIME TRAVEL (MINI SPOILER). THE SHOW BRINGS MORE REALISTIC, TWISTED, AND INFORMATIVE QUALITIES REGARDING DIFFERENT STORIES AND ASPECTS OF RELIGION. IT DOES AN AMAZING JOB WITH DIVERSE REPRESENTATION ACROSS ALL RACES, GENDERS, AND SEXUALITY BUT NOT IN A WAY THAT MAKES IT SEEM LIKE THE WRITERS JUST GOT PR TRAINING AND HAD TO BE INCLUSIVE SOMEHOW. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE WHO LIKES A GOOD-HEARTED, ADVENTUROUS PROTAGONIST AND IS OK WITH A LITTLE GORE.
