It is no question all-male or man-lead bands have been and still are the majority of rock, kicking the women to the curb. As a kid, it was really important to me to listen to alternative and rock music that had the spotlight on women; I looked up to them in a way. As I learned more about the industry and how they treated e a passion that followed such sexism. Women carved a path for themselves and more to follow in later years, many of which are included here, but they faced such hardships to get there. From media backlash always setting them up to be a difficult person just because they don’t allow themselves to be pushed around, having to be the best musician in the room to even get acknowledged, or in some of the worst cases, being physically taken advantage of.
It’s important to be aware of the environment these powerful women were stepping into, and the environment they are still surviving in. I gradually try to find more bands and artists in the alternative and rock genres that feature women as the leader to keep the connection to music alive as I did as a kid. It’s an amazing feeling to find a new band and learn about them through their music, where they share their own journey, life experiences, and what kind of message they want to convey to the world. Many of these bands have songs that criticize the world and the people that make life harder for them and others, and I think it’s important to keep an open ear to their perspective and reasonings. For me, seeing women with a fire in their heart is truly an inspiration and it keeps my own fire lit.
